NOTES

Balance

The instrumentation takes into consdieration that the different instruments are not equally powerful. Herewith a review of the in tended balance in the individual sections.

In dynamics from ƒ and upwards, brass and percussion are noted a dynamic level lower than the groups of instruments they have to balance with.

ƒƒƒƒ in brass and percussion must step forward and be stronger than all others.

m. 1 70

These three groups are equally powerful1:

• trb + fl

• trp + ob

• hrn + cl + bsn + vln1 + vln2 + vla (top note in the double grip of the strings)

Each of the two timpani is as powerful as one of the above groups.

vln1 + vln 2 + vla (lowest note in the double stop of the strings) + vcl. + db is somewhat weaker.

These four groups are equally powerful:

• fl + vln1

• ob + vla

• cl + vln2

• bsn + vcl

Each of the two notes in timp + db is as powerful as one of these groups.

1. Of course, it is not internally within each group that the instruments must be equally loud. For example, the trombone is naturally much louder than the flute, and the horn is more powerful than the violin. They must be here too. It is the combined sound of each group that must be as powerful as each of the other groups.

NOTER Balance

Instrumentationen kalkulerer med, at de forskellige instrumenter ikke er lige kraftige. Her følger en gennemgang af den tilsigtede balance i de enkelte afsnit.

I dynamik fra ƒ og opad, er messing og slagtøj noteret et dynamisk niveau lavere end de grupper instrumenter, de skal balancere med. ƒƒƒƒ i messing og slagtøj skal træde frem og være kraftigere end alle andre.

1. Det er selvfølgelig ikke internt i hver gruppe, at instrumenterne skal være lige kraftige. Fx. er basunen naturligt meget kraftigere end fløjten, og hornet er kraftigere end violinen. Det skal de også være her. Det er den samlede lyd af hver gruppe, der skal være lige så kraftig som hver af de andre grupper.

NB: This section deviates from the principle that brass and percus sion are notated a dynamic level lower than the groups of instru ments they must balance with. This is because the very powerful pipe bells here are part of the other groups.

Dette er, fordi de meget kraftige rørklokker her er en del af de andre grupper.

The important thing is: a percussionist on each side and the brass group together in the middle and the rest of the ensemble in front. If possible, the brass group should sit slightly higher than the others, on a podium or similar.

Det vigtige er: en slagtøjsspiller i hver side og messinggruppen sammen i midten og resten af ensemblet foran. Hvis det er muligt, skal messinggruppen sidde lidt højere end de andre, på et podium eller lignende.
