PERFORMANCE NOTES
PERFORMING Spatial Polyrhythms
Instrumentation For six or more players with 1 piece of handheld percussion each, e.g. a woodblock & a drum stick or finger bells. No previous experience necessary.

Preparation 1. On a large piece of paper, one player makes a rough outline of the shape/boundaries of the performance space/setting. 2. All players then decide on, and mark on that sheet: Their Pathway • A repeatable pathway/route through the space. These pathways may vary in length/shape/ area that they cover – but must be repeatable. • An × at the starting point of their pathway. • Arrows to indicate the direction of movement along their pathway. Their Number of Steps • After what number of steps they make a sound on their portable percussion instrument. For example – every 10th step, make one sound. Their Sound • Each player should chose one single sound which they use for the duration of the piece. This may be a short sound, or a sound which has a sustain.
The piece begins when all players are standing in their chosen starting positions with their piece of portable percussion. 2. Players come in one by one (in any order), walking at any speed they choose, and making their single chosen sound on their portable percussion/object on every ‘nth’ number of steps (depending on what they decided) and following as closely as possible the pathway they designed. 3. Once all players are in, everybody continues repeating their part (pathway and number of steps before making a hit). 4. The piece ends when any player decides to stop moving (& simultaneously stop producing their sound). As soon as the other players realise that someone has stopped, they also stop. The piece is finished when all players are motionless.
