The Invitation John Samuels QC, the staff and trustees, invite you to the Prisoners Education Trust annual lecture at Clifford Chance offices in Canary Wharf. The Trust is delighted to welcome Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons, Nick Hardwick, to give this year’s lecture. As offender learning policy continues to evolve, and cuts in public funding make it much tougher for prisons to engage in rehabilitation activities, the work of charities such as Prisoners Education Trust is increasingly important. The role that learning and arts activities can play in helping prisoners choose and pursue a path of self-reform and eventual rehabilitation continues to provoke debate. We look forward to hearing Nick Hardwick’s thoughts regarding the ‘rehabilitation revolution’.

I would like to give my eternal gratitude to the Prisoners Education Trust – you have truly helped me to turn my life around. For once in my life I have some hope for my future, and without you I would not be the changed man that I am today. Matthew, 30, studying to work in the fitness industry on release

The Speaker Nick Hardwick began work as Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons in July 2010. He was previously the first chair of the Independent Police Complaints Commission from 2003 to 2010. His early career was in the voluntary sector, where he began working with young offenders for NACRO (The National Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders). From 1986 to 1995 he worked as Chief Executive of Centrepoint – a charity and housing association for young homeless people. In 1992 he was seconded to the Department of Environment to work as a special adviser to the then Housing Minister, Sir George Young Bt. MP. He was the Chief Executive of the Refugee Council from 1995 to 2003. He is currently chair of the Housing Ombudsman Service (unremunerated) and a trustee of the New Horizon Youth Centre. Nick has a BA (Hons) from Hull University in English Literature and has an Honorary Doctorate in Social Sciences from the University of Wolverhampton. He was awarded a CBE in 2010. He lives in London with his wife and son.

Your Support Prisoners Education Trust provides, supports and argues the case for better learning and education opportunities for individuals in prison, to enhance their chances of building a better life after release. We enable prisoners to study a wide range of courses not otherwise available in prison through our distance learning grants programme. We provide advice and support and train prisoners to be peer learning mentors. We ensure that prisoner learner voices are heard. We promote debate and research to help improve policy and practice with education. Our Annual Lecture aims to raise awareness and encourage discussion surrounding prisoner education. It is also a fundraising event, and we invite donations from all who attend. We hope you agree that education can unlock an individual’s potential – if so, a donation to our work would be greatly appreciated. Your gift will help us to support men and women trying to change their lives through learning. If you work for an organisation that may be able to support the Trust in other ways, then we would be delighted to explore this further. To donate, please see details on this leaflet. To discuss opportunities for corporate support, please contact Cassie Edmiston, Fundraising Manager, cassie@prisonerseducation.org.uk Thank you for your support. We, and the prisoners we help, are sincerely grateful.
