Risky Business Janet Gavin loves insects. She loves them so much that she decided to become an apiarist. An apiarist, or beekeeper, has beehives to produce honey, beeswax and many other products. Of course, the apiarist has many little helpers: bees. Janet builds and maintains the beehives. That means that she repairs the hives to keep them in good condition. As well, she transports the hives to areas that are good for honey and pollen production. Janet also packages and sells honey, pollen and beeswax. Beeswax is used to make candles, soap and furniture polish. If you want to become an apiarist, then consider this: Apiarists like to work with plants and insects. They work long hours and are often alone. The work is seasonal— spring to fall. It is better for the apiarists if they are not allergic to bee stings. This is what makes Janet’s job so risky. “You never know when a bee may sting you,” says Janet. “That’s why I wear protective clothing when working with the bees.” She wears overalls, gloves and a hat with a net to protect her face. You can search the internet if you want to learn more about this special and unusual job.
