B Story: The Haunted School • Listen to the story and read along. 1 It’s Halloween at Merry Point School. All of the students are wearing their Halloween costumes. Max and Beth are very excited because there will be many activities today. The biggest activity is a scavenger hunt in the school.
Mrs. Bloom says, “Okay, class. Find your partner and come get your first clue for the scavenger hunt.” “Max, do you want to be my partner?” asks Beth.
2
“Of course!” Max answers. “I think if we cooperate, we can win this scavenger hunt.” Beth says, “Great. I will read the clues and you can write the answers. The first clue says: This is the biggest room in the school.” Max yells, “That’s easy! It’s the gymnasium. Let’s go!” © 2011, Les Éditions CEC inc. • Reproduction prohibited

3 The gymnasium is dark. They see ghosts and they hear spooky noises. Suddenly a ghost whispers to Beth and Max: “Pay attention!” it says. “This is the second clue: You will find cymbals and keys here.” “I know, it’s the janitor’s room,” says Max. Beth replies, “Max, that’s an intelligent guess, but there are also cymbals, like musical cymbals.” “Oh, right,” he says. “Let’s go to the music room.”
When Max and Beth arrive at the music room, 4 they are greeted by a vampire. Beth whispers, “That’s Lucy our lunch monitor.” Max says, “Let’s see if she has the third clue. Hi Lucy, do you have our third clue?“ Lucy answers, “Yes, indeed. You can sink your teeth into the next clue!” “What?” Beth asks. “Can you repeat that, please?” Lucy repeats the clue. “I said: You can sink your teeth into the next clue!” “I don’t understand,” says Beth.
5
Max says, “Our teeth… We eat with our teeth! I think it’s the cafeteria.” “I agree,” Beth replies. “Let’s go see.” Beth and Max go into the cafeteria. They see their principal disguised as a dentist. Ms. Fujimoto congratulates Max and Beth because they are the first group to arrive. She gives them the final clue. The clue is: A place to play, to talk with friends and to have fun. Beth and Max yell, “It’s the schoolyard!”
6
Outside Max and Beth see Mrs. O'Neill. She is waiting for the winners with a surprise bag. Mrs. O’Neill says, “Congratulations Beth and Max. You make a great team.” “Thanks,” replies Beth. “We like to work together because we encourage and listen to each other.” Max agrees. “That’s right. We always try to help each other. That’s our winning strategy!”

Project: The Class House A The model For the project, we are presenting the kitchen. In the kitchen, there is a gigantic black fridge.
There is also a long brown table. There are 10 chairs. There are two big vases on the table.
B Preparing for the project • Choose a partner. • Brainstorm ideas for your room. Do you want to be my partner? Do you want to work with me?
Yes, let’s work together! I want bunk beds. Do you agree? No, I prefer two separate beds. Is that OK? Sure. Can we have a television in the room? That’s a great idea!
