Joan Ann PEERS
April 9, 1936 ~ April 29, 2011 Mom passed away at St. Paul’s Hospital, due to complications from kidney disease. Affectionately known as “Ma” by many who knew her, she touched the lives of many. She was strong willed and stubborn as they come, but also the most compassionate and caring. She was the best Mom and her family meant everything to her. Predeceased by the love of her life, Jim Peers ( J.P.), daughterin-law Emma, nephew Brad and grandson Chad. She leaves behind to mourn, her sister Betty Dickenson; her children, daughter Debbie Ruggles (Lance), and sons Bill Vaughn (Lisa), Rob Vaughn and Jason Peers ( Jessica). She was also “Mom” to five stepchildren. Lovingly remembered by daughter-in-law Colleen and grandson Brennan, Gramma to numerous grandchildren, one great-grandchild plus one more on the way and a nephew. Special thanks to her granddaughter Leanne for being at her side while in hospital and doing the “Popsicle” runs. Also, a big thank you to Dr. Werb, the women in the Dialysis Ward at St. Mary’s Hospital, Chris at Howe Sound Pharmacy and everyone else who cared for her.
She will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. In our hearts forever! We love you Mom!
Survived by her loving family: husband Kerry; daughters Kylie (Jamey) Western, Andrenea (Grant) and Kara; son Devon; parents Helen and Jules Sureau; sisters Rhonda and Dianna and their families; Kerry’s family; and other extended family members.
Long-time Sunshine Coast resident Ann Foley passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital in the early morning of April 28. She will be sadly missed by her daughters Natasha and Karen; mother Margaret; father Bill; sister Jeannette (Robert); brothers Donald (Marilyn), Frank (Helen) and Jack (Char); grandchildren Elana, Christine, Aaron and Kevin; as well as many others who came to know and cherish her friendship over the years, most especially of those, Marleen and Bob Daniel of Pender Harbour.
Denise was born in Estevan, Saskatchewan and worked for several years at the Vancouver office of the Department of Vital Statistics and ICBC. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, May 14, at 2 p.m. at Yarrow Mennonite Brethren Church, 41995 Yarrow Central Road, Chilliwack, BC.
Born in Saskatchewan, Ann was raised on a farm, and she cherished the memories from that time in her life. As they say, you can take the girl out of the farm but you can’t take the farm out of the girl. She never fully departed from her roots when she moved to BC. She was an avid gardener and landscaper. Her rock walls will continue to stand on the Sunshine Coast for many years to come. Ann valued family above all else. A union activist in her early 20s, she never shied away from a battle, especially those involving the vulnerable. As a pure-hearted soul, she was exceptionally trustworthy, kind and generous. She appreciated humour and shared her contagious laugh with everyone she knew.
Flowers gratefully declined in favour of donations to the North Shore Hospice, 319 East 14th Street, North Vancouver, BC V7M 1P6 or the BC Cancer Foundation (Glioblastoma Tumor Research), #600 - 686 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC V5Z 1G1.

Donald McLeay In the final months of his life, at home in Hopkins Landing, BC, Donald McLeay found great comfort in contemplating the natural world around him. He never tired of watching the eagles soar against the backdrop of the mountains. Birds and animals had been the constant companions of his art. His illness had forced him to lay down his carver’s knife and to hang up his painter’s brush — but his love of nature, which was faithfully and lovingly reflected in his work, never diminished. Throughout his long career, Don had won a reputation both as a master carver and printmaker, fusing traditional West Coast native designs with more experimental forms to create a distinctive style much appreciated by collectors around the world. But Don also produced work of the highest quality for customers, who delighted in the passion he invested in the construction of a simple chair, a table or an elaborate carving. When he worked with wood, he was in his finest element. Though serious about his art, Don had a warm sense of humour and a deep understanding of human nature. Well informed about many things, he scorned pretense and laughed at the follies of the world. And whatever he did in life, he did with gusto. A competitive darts player, he was particularly proud the year he won the Ontario Men’s singles championship. Baseball was a lifelong pastime. From his days playing in Triple A, he was known as a team player and an excellent sportsman. Donald McLeay was born March 21,1940 in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, but spent much of his childhood on the West Coast. He lived in Ontario for many years before returning to the Sunshine Coast with his long-time partner Penny Christian.

If tears could build a stairway and thoughts a memory lane, I’d walk right up to Heaven and bring you home again. No farewell words were spoken, no time to say goodbye. You were gone before I knew it, and only God knows why.
Don died April 22, 2011. In addition to his partner Penny, he is survived by his brothers Earl (Judy) McLeay and Ed (Marilyn) McLeay and sister Linda (Tom) Harris, as well as his son Cameron (Deb) McLeay and his daughter Frieda Belleau, and many other relatives and friends. His son Sean predeceased him.
My heart still aches in sadness, and secret tears still flow. What it meant to lose you, no one can ever know. But now I know you want us to mourn for you no more, To remember all the happy times. Life still has much in store.
His family wishes to give special thanks to the Palliative Care Team, and to Dr. Andrea Stinson and Dr. Jennifer Phillips, for helping Don to enjoy his final months at home.
No service by request. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
