No. 11 155 Spooky is an independent gentle girl who likes to keep to herself when around other cats, but enjoys a good petting session and doesn’t mind being groomed to keep her coat soft and shiny. This snuggler is happy lounging in the sun and would do well in a quiet home. Sponsored by

Dusty is looking for a quiet but active home that can help him feel more relaxed when meeting new people. To say he’s full of beans would be an understatement, as he’s only an affectionate puppy looking for love, guidance and, above all, fun! Sponsored by

SPRING POND CARE – PART ONE As the days get longer and the temperature rises, spring is the time when the pond starts to come to life. Your fish become more active, starting to look for food, and the plants begin to grow again. While the water temperature is below 10C (50F) it is advisable to feed your fish an easily digestible wheat germ food. Whilst your fish may be hungry, it is important to feed them sparingly, as friendly filtration bacteria that break down poisonous fish waste will still not be present in high numbers after the cold of winter. Late spring is the ideal time to replant your pond. The addition of a special pond plant fertilizer will boost this growth further. It is particularly important to test the water for pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate throughout spring. The increase in the fish’s metabolism, coupled with more frequent feeding, can cause water quality problems. On top of this the filter is not working at peak efficiency, and there may be decomposing vegetation from plants that died over winter. If you detect a problem, stop feeding the fish and carry out water change of no more than 25 per cent. Remember to add a dechlorinator when using tap water. This will dilute any toxins and reduce the problem short term. Continued next week

I’m called Tao. I’m a mature Siamese cross. Much to my horror, I was abandoned in Roberts Creek, but was found and taken to the Haven. Violet says I’m a wonderful, loving cat, but because I have a hyperthyroid condition, most people won’t adopt me. Our foster program keeps me alive and well. Sponsored by
