Mining the Moon?

It's a long-range plan (like 50 years long!) but China has begun making serious noises about mining the moon for a form of helium that's rare here but not so rare on our little lunar buddy. Planet Earth back then was a giant, unexplored and untamed place that sounded endless to a small wide-eyed boy. We didn’t have TV until 1959, a phone at home until the mid 1960s; I didn’t use a PC until the end of the 1980s, or own a mobile phone until the late 1990s. Technology has made the world smaller. People work from home thus making their sphere of operation smaller. My Mother would say; “I don’t care how big your carbon footprint is, don’t get it on my new carpet!” A colleague of mine phoned Burntwood Library to find out if the local well-known slimmers’ group were still holding meetings there. The lady who answered the call said she thought it was every Monday but she would just check. She came back and said she'd found a poster with the Slimwatchers number on, and so he took it down. He phoned naturally assuming he would be ringing a local agent. After a strange ringing tone a lady answered, she had a very unfamiliar accent. Turns out he was

A View from the Past By the Landor Society

“Rudgeley is in a delightful and healthy country, around which are a number of elegant and splendid seats and mansions. The town is not only neatly and well built, but also contains many elegant houses. In 1821 it contained 494 houses and 2,667 inhabitants, of whom 317 were employed in the various trades and manufactures, particularly in those of hats and felts.” Thus is Rugeley described in ‘Picturesque views and descriptions of cities, towns, castles, mansions… in Staffordshire and Shropshire’, published in 1830. The volume was illustrated with steel engravings by Frederick Calvert, eight of which are reproduced here, giving a romanticised view of the area as it was nearly 200 years ago.

Bishton Hall “An admirable modern built mansion.”

Wolseley Hall “The interior of this curious old hall presents, perhaps, some of the finest specimens of carving upon oak. The ground staircase and drawing room are richly ornamented in this way and the whole is the workmanship of an artist of the first eminence in the time of Charles II.” Stafford “The town is of considerable extent, containing several good streets and lanes, some of which are well paved.”

Tixall Hall “The present neat structure was erected in 1780” Armitage Park - later Spode House. ‘Picturesque Views’ tells us that: “The Grand trunk Canal passes through an interesting subterraneous cavern, near the pleasure grounds of this park.” Beaudesert. ‘Picturesque Views’ states that... “This magnificent mansion was partly rebuilt and enlarged in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, but many portions of it are of a much earlier period.”

Silky smooth forever - naturally

y the time you read this, you may well have seen thriving local business Xodos Aesthetics Ltd on BBC Midlands Today after owner, Sally Wagstaff was interviewed by Ben Godfrey, their roaming BBC Reporter. Sally started her highly-regarded business after taking part in an entrepreneurial scheme for ARMED FORCES Dependents and her achievements in 18 months of business have been extraordinary. A qualified and experienced nurse who served as an Officer in the Royal Navy for many years, it is Sally’s attention to detail and commitment to excellence that has led to Xodos becoming the thriving business it is today. Xodos specialises in painless and permanent hair removal for men and women using ground-breaking Soprano® INMotionTM laser technology. This gentle, cool and effective technique gradually heats up the pigment contained within the hair follicle causing it to destroy the hair follicle from the inside effectively ‘switching off’ the hair’s ability to grow. What’s more, it works on very dark hair through to fairer and redder shades than has ever been possible before – painlessly, effortlessly and without mess and fuss. Another plus about this amazing laser is the ability to treat dark, Asian and even black skin without pain or burning – something that is just not possible with any other type of treatment. As the summer approaches and holiday beaches beckon, many of us will be stepping up our depilation routines, but at Xodos painful waxing, plucking and shaving are a thing of the past. At Xodos you can be sure that in just a few sessions on any part of the body (nose, upper lip, neck, bikini-line, back etc) you can permanently wave goodbye to 80% of hair growth in that area. This leaves you with smooth, depilated skin – no more in-growing hairs or stubble! Your skin will look as if it is naturally silky and smooth and you’ll be able to throw those razors away forever! Worryingly, many hair removal centres do not employ qualified staff, and there is no governing body for the industry. Sally is a qualified and experienced Nurse, and is also qualified in OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH and holds a Masters Degree. She has set the bar high and offers only the most discreet, professional and effective services. Xodos Aesthetics can be found at The Hexagon, Curborough Countryside Centre, Watery Lane, Lichfield, WS13 8ES. Call 01543 415 942 for your free consultation. Make a letter of wishes alongside your will

T

he importance of making a will and keeping it up to date can never be emphasised enough. Your will sets out how you would like your financial assets to be distributed after you die. However, if you have a second family or think your will may be unpopular with family members who may feel left out, then you might also want to leave a letter of wishes to be stored alongside your will. Sometimes fulfilling personal wishes can be as important as how your financial assets are distributed among family and friends. You may have specific wishes for your many personal effects that are too small to be named in your will. Knowing that items with sentimental but no financial value, such as photographs and keepsakes, will be left to someone who will treasure them can be a great comfort. A letter of wishes can also guide your nominated executors through specific things that you would like to happen after your death. For example, you

may want to leave more detailed instructions about practical issues such as the care of pets and passwords for online accounts. While a letter of wishes is not binding upon your executors, it may prove extremely helpful to them as they try to fulfil your requests. Without a letter of wishes your executors will have little guidance from you and instead have to use their own judgement. This may differ from what you or the rest of your family would have liked. It can also help the court understand your intentions in the event of a dispute about the contents of your will. If you have young children, you should also consider writing a separate letter of wishes addressed to the people you are appointing as guardians of your children. This letter can cover issues such as which school you would like your children to attend, religious beliefs you would to be observed, or how much contact you would like

them to keep with extended family. This can give you peace of mind that they your guardians have some guidance on how you would like your children to Shelly Wainwright be raised. A letter of wishes can be added or changed at any time without the need for your entire will to be changed. For further information on leaving a letter of wishes or making a will, contact Shelly Wainwright in the wills and probate team on 01543 267 984 or email swainwright@ansonsllp.com. Ansons Solicitors has offices in Cannock and Lichfield, Staffordshire.

Max’s Mission to Move

R

ecently the Rugeley and Chase Gazette was contacted by Joanne Ray who told us about some of the fundraising events being organised for Max’s Mission to Move. Max was born at 34 weeks weighing 5lb 6oz. Max has spastic cerebral palsy and global development delay. He also has squints in both eyes and has nystagmus (which is common with cerebral palsy). At 20 months Max is still unable to sit independently, crawl or walk but he is an amazing and happy little boy. Much of Max’s treatment programmes are not covered by the NHS. Joanne told us that: “Myself and Michelle, Max's mom, are organizing an event on the 14 March 1.30 till 4pm at the Pear Tree Club the day before Mother’s Day. It's a ticket only event.Tickets are £8, and for that you get a Cream Tea (sandwiches, cake, biscuits, tea/coffee/cloudy lemonade) and entry into the prize draw. There will also be a selection of stalls including a raffle and tombola. “We are also having a Fun Day at the same location on 16 May from 2-6pm. We will have lots going on at the event, including stalls (inside and out), bouncy castle, BBQ, DJ, kids’ crafts, Rugeley Bake Off and cake auction, face painter etc. “Michelle and her Brother Simon are also having a Fundraising night at The Cedar.” More information on all of these events in available on Facebook.

Major New Property Website, Launches

O

nTheMarket.com, a major new property website created to compete head-on with Rightmove and Zoopla, launched on Monday 26 January 2015. The portal features hundreds of thousands of properties for sale and to rent at all price points across the UK. Over 4,600 estate and letting agent offices have moved all their properties from other websites to advertise on the site. Many of these firms will be advertising their new-to-market properties exclusively at OnTheMarket.com for at least 48 hours in advance of displaying them anywhere else. The new site believes that the exclusive early listings will appeal especially to the most serious property-seekers who want to gain an edge over other buyers or tenants. Commercially speaking, as a seller, it’s better to have your house seen by buyers who are actively searching rather than those who are just ‘surfing’. Every property at OnTheMarket.com is marketed by a locally-based estate or letting agent because of the benefits of having a local professional agent who can manage the sales or lettings process. The site does not feature properties marketed by online-only agents.

ollowing an agreement at Cannock Chase Council, Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Brown has taken early retirement/voluntary redundancy and has left the Council with effect from 1st February 2015. This decision forms part of the proposed senior management restructure for the Council and the posts of Chief Executive Officer and Corporate Director have been deleted. uietly existing through the centuries, Lichfield Cathedral Library sits above the Chapter House and was completed in 1249. For over 700 years it has been a source of delight and wonder to its visitors, as they explored the treasures that it contained. From 11 March until 16 December 2015, the library is opening its door to the public with a series of ‘Mirror of the Age’ tours, allowing you to walk in the footsteps of medieval scholars, Royalists and Parliamentarians. ‘The Mirror of the Age Tour’ explores books and manuscripts that mirror the time in which they were written, spanning the 13th to the 18th century. These extraordinary books contain beautiful medieval illustrations, images of far-flung empires and the handwriting of kings. Amongst the selection of items showcased on this tour are a 13th century Canon Law manuscript – the Justinian Codex, a Geneva Bible from the time of the Reformation, a manuscript containing the signature of King Charles I, and an 18th century book on the history and antiquities of Staffordshire. Lichfield Cathedral Library really is a jewel, with a vaulted roof and a 13th century tiled floor that wouldn’t look out of place at Hogwarts! It is filled with a collection that contains both medieval texts, the St Chad’s Gospel that dates back to the 8th Century and a fantastic selection of later medieval, Renaissance, Tudor, Civil War and eighteenth and nineteenth century books. Lichfield Cathedral’s library houses some very important books, and many of the best of these are being carefully unwrapped, ready to show during these Cathedral Library Tours. Tours take place on: Wednesday 11 March; Saturday 11 April; Wednesday 13 May; Saturday 13 June; Wednesday 24 June; Saturday 4 July; Wednesday 22 July; Saturday 15 August; Wednesday 16 September; Saturday 10 October; Wednesday 18 November; Saturday 12 December (Christmas Tour) and Wednesday 16 December (Christmas Tour). Visitors on a library tour can now enjoy a fantastic tour package including a free tea or coffee at Chapters, The Café in The Close, and a 10% discount on purchases within the Cathedral Shop on the day of your tour.* Library tours begin at 10.30am and will last approximately 1 hour. Tickets are priced at £18 per person and funds from the tours are used to support the maintenance and conservation of the Cathedral Library. Move over Grande Canal The best Pizzas are not in Italy… they’re in the ‘Mucky Duck’ at Fradley Junction! The Swan or ‘Mucky Duck’ at Fradley Junction has a huge reputation for good food, but now it is “move over Venetian Grande Canal” and “enter the Coventry & Trent & Mersey Canal”, because this famous old pub has a treat in store. To supplement its already extensive menu their ‘National Award Winning Chef’ (2013) is baking awesome freshly made mouth-watering hand-made Pizzas. The like have never been seen in these parts. The chef uses his skills to produce 9 and 12 inch pizzas throughout lunch and evening (also take away available). Great on a fresh Winter’s night with a glass of Italian wine with varieties such as: ‘Bitter Sweet’ with Mozzarella and caramelised onion; ‘All-day-Pizza-breakfast’ with bacon, egg and black pudding; Americano, Hawaiian; and Calzone. Follow that with coffee made from real Lavazza beans Something for everyone It’s easy to enjoy Fradley Junction with all its colour and tranquility and its nearby nature reserve, which features in a couple of published British Waterways trails, or just sit with a beer (or a cup of tea) and watch the world float by. Over the past six years Rick & Tracey have resisted the urge to make The Swan into a trendy ‘gastro pub’ and kept it as a traditional canalside-socialising pub that folk have loved for well over two hundred years. Open 7 days a week, The Swan has something for everybody – it’s a retreat from the hurly burly of everyday life. It has a Sunday Carvery every week 12-3 with five meats and fresh vegetables for £10 inc. sweet and coffee. Lunch is served Mon-Sat 12-2.30 with a full menu available every evening 5.30 – 9pm. If your fancy is for traditional and homemade foods then The Swan is the place to enjoy a mixed grill, sirloin steak, beer battered cod, pork-belly & black pepper plus homemade curries and pies. Plus freshly made sandwiches, snacks and much more. Beer and entertainment The Swan has a superb selection of beers on draught such as Abbot and Pedigree, with four guest ales on all the time (So there’s always something new available) And of course all your popular ciders and lagers. And talking of something for everybody – why not call and enjoy the evening entertainment. Every Thursday evening is Folk Night, with Open Mic on Sunday evenings together with other events on throughout the summer months. And something unique is the Curiosity Shop, now open at the rear of the Mucky Duck selling all manner of things where you are welcome to have a mooch-around. Rick & Tracey extend a warm welcome and suggest you rediscover Fradley Junction and The Swan this weekend.

Pushing Back the Darkness By Ken Edwards

f you had taken a walk on a moonless night in Rugeley Town or any of the surrounding villages in the years immediately after the Great War the only thing lighting your way would have been the pale glow of an occasional gas lamp hissing away. You would have been well advised to carry a lantern of some kind, or better still stay indoors. However things were about to change. Brereton Colliery had first produced electricity on a limited scale way back in the 1890s using a small dynamo to supply lights around the pit head, pit bottom and the underground stables. They decided in the 1920s to increase their generating capacity by building a powerhouse and installing a 500 KW steam-powered generator at their Brick-Kiln Colliery, four years later the capacity was increased to 1 MW. At first surplus capacity from these generators was used to light up Brereton Hall, the colliery manager’s house, and other houses close to the colliery but its use gradually progressed to other properties in Brereton Village including St Michael’s Church. The expansion in the use of electricity by the colliery included carrying the supply on overhead cables alongside the colliery branch railway line to supply the Brickworks at Springhill Terrace and the Coal Wharf at Rugeley. In 1928 this usage was again extended by the signing of an agreement between the colliery

Page 28 www.chasegazette.co.uk

and a new electricity provider the Trent Valley and High Peak Electric Company with offices in Albion Street. The agreement was for cables to be taken into Rugeley from Wharf Road for distribution and use by the electric company throughout the town. This arrangement continued for some six years at which time the Trent Valley and High Peak Electric Company brought their own supply lines into the area from Stockport. So gradually in our towns and villages life began to change particularly after dark, first the larger houses, shops and public houses converted to the new electric lighting, then over the next twenty years or so everywhere saw the gas mantles fade into oblivion to give way to the tungsten bulb. The town centres became oases of light, they took on a new appearance with the sudden growth of poles and wires festooned along the roadways and

buildings, an unfortunate but very necessary addition to modern living. Today when approaching Rugeley from the north the glow in the sky from the built-up area can be seen from many miles away. From that small beginning in the 1920s when the first electric lamp, powered from the colliery, flickered into life the technology improved immensely and some 37 years later one of the first large combined-colliery/power station installations (Lea Hall Colliery and Rugeley ‘A’ Power Station) in the country was commissioned in 1961. Rugeley ‘A’ consisted of five generators each one 120 times larger than the one in Brereton Powerhouse which ironically was about to be demolished. Ken Edwards is a member of the Landor Society.

Looking for a Forever Home

ello, my name is Graham. I'm 2 years old and looking for my forever home and family. I lived on the streets for many months after being left by my humans when they moved house and I became very scared. A kind lady began feeding me and eventually I trusted her enough to let her pick me up and put in me in a box that she carried. She took me to a place called Rugeley Cats Society where they took me to see a man in a white coat and he smelt funny. Next thing I know I had been what they call 'neutered'. I can be quite shy around new people and I think that's why other humans have picked other cats instead of me. Trust me though, once you get to know me and vice versa, I will be your new best friend. I don't mind other cats but I don't like those big barking creatures, they give me a headache. I also don't mind little humans, just as long as they're not too little and there aren't many of them. I have a lot of love to give my new humans and I hope I can make someone very happy, I don't ever want to be left alone again. My heart couldn't take it. After reading my story if you would like to meet me or offer me a home again then please contact the ladies at Rugeley Cats Society. I think there's an 'adoption' process but I think it's pretty straightforward. Anyway, thank you for reading this. Lots of purrs, Graham xxx

Rugeley Cats Society was founded by Sallie Young. Her beautiful cat Doris went missing on 2nd March 2013 and despite frantically searching, Sallie never found her. What she did find however were a lot of neglected, homeless and unloved cats. Sallie could not bear to see any animal in distress, so she began treating them for fleas and worms, feeding them and taking them to the vet to check for a microchip in the hope of finding their families. Sallie set up the Facebook page Rugeley Cats Society in the hope of bringing local cat lovers together. She hadn't realised until Doris went missing how little help is available, she hoped through the page, more people would be looking for missing cats. Rugeley Cats Society was founded on the 18th March 2013. The page quickly grew with more and more people using it. People asked for help to find their cat and Sallie was happy to do so, others started messaging or calling her to help them rehome cats, and also to report 'stray' cats. Other messages were to report cats killed on the road, or in need of rescue. Sallie always tried to help and rescue cats in trouble (stuck, injured or lost). If a cat is missing, we post the photo all over Facebook, and alert local vets. The postmen and post-women receive a poster with missing cats’ photos and Sallie used to go herself and walk the area the cat was last seen. If a cat has been killed, Sallie would go and collect him/her. Sallie would then take them to the vet to check for a microchip. If no chip is found, she would try to find the family. If a cat that had been rescued was in need of veterinary treatment, Sallie would take them to the vet and whatever treatment they need they get. When they are healthy, Sallie would find them a forever home and family. On the 14th of June, Sallie’s money ran out. She knew she had to either stop helping cats or become a charity to enable public donations. On the 24th June the Charitable Trust deed was signed and witnessed and by the end of July the charity bank account was active. Sallie has helpers now, who are involved in both the rescue and the Facebook page as it's too big for one person to do alone. Katrina has been fostering for some time, she is fantastic, never fazed by any cat that comes into care. Leanne is another fosterer and a marvel with kittens. She hand feeds them, weighs them, keeps them warm, prays for them and loves them. Anna helps with cats that need time, patience and a little ‘therapy’ before being rehomed. There is also Teresa who helps to foster. She will help adult cats and kittens and welcomes them into her family before they find their home. James Cadwallader at Number 1 Vets and his team of veterinary nurses are amazing. All the cats are taken there and nothing is too much trouble for them. The cats get the best care there is. Creature Comforts pet shop also support Rugeley Cats Society and always give Suzie a discount and charge only what it costs her for litter. They also take donations of food, toys, beds etc from the public. Also Florida Sun in Bridgetown takes donations for us as the lady who owns it, Marie, is a fundraisers and charity worker herself. This year, without doubt, has been the worst for abandoned kittens and cats. The amount of messages received via the Facebook page have been astonishing and even though there are four core people involved now (Sallie, Leanne, Katrina and Anna) it has sometimes been a struggle. However, we always do our best for the cats. Nobody who works at Rugeley Cats Society gets paid. Nobody claims expenses. Every penny raised goes to the cats we have in care. We need your support. Without it we can't do what we do. To date (03/02/15) we have re-homed 220 homeless cats; helped 130 missing cats get home; provided veterinary treatment for 146 cats and kittens in our care; treated 100s of cats for fleas and worms and answered thousands of messages/telephone calls offering advice and support. Doris is still missing. For more information go to Rugeley Cats Society’s Facebook page or email rugeleycatssociety@gmail.com

Firs Club Raises £800 Tree planted to commemorate for Guide Dogs the First World War

A

tulip tree has been planted in Cannock Park to commemorate the First World War.The tree was planted by the Cannock Townswomen Guild who wanted to mark the passing of the Centenary of the First World War and to honour those that gave their lives in the war. Val Beale, Chair of the Committee said: “The grounds that later became the park were used during the war as a venue for raising funds for the forces and acted as a morale booster for troops both here and abroad.”

Tracy Oldbury, Estelle Oldbury and Mrs Trigg with Flora.

The Firs Working Men’s Club at Chase Terrace have raised £800 for Guide Dogs for the Blind by holding a Fun Day, with barbecue, raffle and bouncy castle. The resulting cheque was presented by Graham Westwood, Senior Steward at the Club to Mrs Carol Trigg, a member of the local Guide Dogs fundraising group and herself a guide dog user. She was accompanied by her guide dog, Flora. Mrs Trigg thanked the members of the Firs Club for their generous support of the charity, explaining the difference that having a guide dog can make to a visually impaired person in terms of mobility and independence.

Stepping Stones welcomes ten little visitors!

S

tepping Stones nursery in Heath Hayes, Cannock, has welcomed ten new little visitors!

Stepping Stones in Heath Hayes has been open 7 years in February and currently looks after youngsters from three months to five years (although nursery placements start from 6 weeks old). The children are from all over the area including Cannock, Burntwood, Hednesford and Rugeley. For several years the children have been learning about life-cycles by caring for and watching caterpillars as they turn into chrysalis and then butterflies. This February the nursery purchased 10 living chicken eggs and, with the help of the fascinated children, helped them incubate and hatch. The first egg started to crack at 7am a few days after they arrived and the chick emerged that afternoon, followed by all nine of its brothers and sisters. The children are fascinated and delighted by the chicks and feed them, water them and care for them. They’ve also been learning how to identify males and females through their colour, and have given them names including Sophie and Derek. Shelley Shakespeare, Room Leader for Pre-School commented: “It’s shown the children how to look after animals and about the life-cycle of the chick. It’s also a great way of teaching personal hygiene as hands have to be washed after handling them. It’s been a really great focus for the children and has improved their communication skills and their confidence.” The female chicks will be kept in Heath Hayes so that the children can watch them grow. To find out more about Stepping Stones or to book a visit contact Nursery Manager Emma Fox on 01543 448933, pop into the nursery at Heath Hayes Community Centre, Hayes Way, Heath Hayes, Cannock, WS12 3XP or visit www.visitsteppingstones.com

Brereton and Ravenhill Neighbourhood Plan

eighbourhood Plans are a new idea that allow Parish Councils to produce planning policies that both guide development and protect areas and buildings of importance. Previously it was only the bigger councils that did this. When they are adopted, they are a major factor in what development is allowed and what development is rejected. They will also increase the amount of non-council-tax money paid to the parish. Brereton and Ravenhill Parish Council is the first Parish Council in the district to be authorised to produce a Neighbourhood Plan. They are asking local people what it should contain. So far this seems likely to include design policies and policies to protect local green spaces, historic buildings and neighbourhoods with special characters.

The first picture shown here is the ‘Free School’ on Main Road, Brereton, which was Brereton's first school. It is being considered for the Neighbourhood Plan's local list of buildings, which would supplement the national list of ‘Listed Buildings’. The second image is a historic photograph of a row of houses in Brereton Road, Ravenhill. They are still there and are being considered for designation as a Neighbourhood Character Area, which would be a local supplement to the Conservation Areas that have national status. For more information go to the Brereton and Ravenhill Neighbourhood Plan Facebook page Thanks to Tim Jones, Chair of the Brereton and Ravenhill Neighbourhood Plan Steering Committee for the information and images.
