Best years of our lives?
Come September and the holiday season is very nearly over. How clearly I can remember the ‘back to school tummy’ that came with the realisation that it was school on Monday, and the never-ending school holidays had actually come to the end. I remember last year hearing a pathetic, whining and tortured little voice coming over the garden fence from my neighbour’s house late on an August Sunday evening, “Oh Mummy, I don’t want to go back to school!”, “You’ve got to son.” came the voice of reason. “But the kids all hate me!”, “That’s no excuse.” “But Mummy, the teachers are despicable to me!”, “You’ve got to go and you know you have.”. “It’s a really horrid place and I never want to set foot in there again!”, “Look son, you’ve got to go back to school, you’re the headmaster!” That feeling of exhilaration on the last day of summer term has gone and been replaced by a dreadful feeling of helplessness. You are sinking into a whirlpool of realisation that there is nothing but rainy days, darker nights, homework and yet more homework with nothing to sustain you but the thought of Christmas in four months’ time. As if the first week of term wasn’t traumatic enough you had to

Warning to divorced couples- keep your court papers safe!
O
ne of t h e m o s t important parts of any divorce is resolving how the finances are to be separated. As a couple you may want to try and achieve a ‘clean break’, which Susan Davies means that you cannot make any further financial claims against each other, and have it recorded on paperwork from the court as an order. A recent divorce case hit the headlines when the ex-wife was allowed to claim financial support 23 years after divorce. This has sent shivers up the spines of many divorcees but Susan Davies, head of family law at Ansons Solicitors, advises couples not to fear, as long as they have kept their paperwork safe. “As long as you have a copy of your clean break order made by the court and keep it safe, your spouse cannot return for more capital,” says Susan. In the ruling from the Supreme Court, Kathleen Wyatt, the ex-wife of multimillionaire Dale Vince, was given the right to make a claim for financial support from his fortune because neither one of the couple could produce court paperwork from their divorce. The claim was allowed because no evidence could be produced to show that a ‘clean break’ order dismissing any financial claims against each other had been made. At the time of their divorce, in 1992, Dale Vince was a New Age traveller and had little money. More recently, Mr Vince went on to found the green energy company Ecotricity, and made a fortune which is now estimated to be worth £57 million. In contrast, Ms Wyatt lived a hand-to-mouth existence on welfare benefits and low pay while raising their son (and children from other relationships). Hearing of Mr Vince’s success she made a claim for retrospective financial support claiming part of his capital now, even though neither of them had capital at the time of their separation and divorce. “This case highlights the need for divorcing couples always to seek professional legal advice and get a binding court order to settle their financial claims, no matter what their circumstances,” says Susan Davies. If you are separating from your partner, instructing an experienced solicitor to deal with your divorce is the best way to ensure that all the paperwork is properly completed and you have the correct court orders to allow you to move on with your life. If you are getting divorced contact Susan Davies at the Lichfield office of Ansons Solicitors on 01543 267 190 or email sdavies@ansonsllp.com. Page 8 www.lichfieldgazette.co.uk

Lichfield. The We Love Lichfield Fund is a local fund that provides small grants to a wide range of projects based in Lichfield District. The fund will consider all applications from local groups in need twice a year. Companies and individuals are welcome to donate or fundraise and all money is invested through a permanent endowment fund by registered charity Staffordshire Community Foundation on behalf of We Love Lichfield in line with charity commission guidelines. The interest and dividends earned on the invested money is then distributed by the We Love Lichfield Fund as small grants across the district. The beauty of this model is that it will provide a source of on-going funding that can be used for small grants, and larger grants as the fund grows, for many years to come. The fund aims to raise £500,000 in 2016, which would mean up to £25,000 could be given away to community groups and organisations through small grants. S
eptember is World Alzheimer’s Month, and it encourages us, this year in particular, to see the person behind the condition, and remember them if they have passed away. Living at home
In the early stages of dementia, many people are able to look after their homes in the same way as before their diagnosis. However, as the illness gets worse, it is likely that someone
who has dementia will find it difficult to look after their home and they may need help with daily activities, such as housework, cooking and shopping. The home of a person with dementia may also need to be adapted to enable them to stay safe, mobile and independent. With the right help and support, it is very possible to live well with dementia. Our services are also designed to support carers, to provide an all important break. We also provide nightsitting if older people or their carers are worried about safety or support during the night. Telephone 01785 788477 or www.ageuk.org.uk/southstaffs.

Dove Hearing Centres 1st Anniversary in Lichfield A listening, caring approach
A year has now passed since we opened our third Hearing Centre in Lichfield and this anniversary ends an incredibly busy twelve months for us. We would like to thank all those people who have supported our new successful venture and look forward to providing many more years of excellent hearing care to the area. With over 35 years of hearing care experience between us and with Dove Hearing Centres expanding year on year since 2004, the opening of the Lichfield Centre was a natural development in our progression. We have welcomed the support from local businesses over the last year and the well-wishers who have been popping into the Centre. We thank all the new clients who have allowed us to take over their hearing care and we look forward to maintaining the high standards of service and aftercare over the coming years. We feel this success has been down to a few factors: - The ability to be impartial and offer a choice of all manufacturers and levels of technology, unlike some larger hearing aid companies who are linked to certain manufacturers. - Unique products which other companies can’t offer, such as Lyric, the only truly invisible hearing aid available, a hearing aid which stays in your ear for 2 months at a time ensuring daily 24 hour hearing with no fuss and fiddling. - Additional services such as ear wax microsuction removal, allowing wax to be removed in a safe procedure with the ear canal being viewed through an ENT microscope, and the ability to discuss hearing problems such as tinnitus and assistive device options for the hearing impaired.
As we move into our second year at the Lichfield Centre please do not hesitate to contact us or come into the Centre if you have any concerns about your hearing or merely want to have an informal discussion about your current hearing aids or if you have any questions about hearing aid pricing or technology. Best wishes Rebecca & Neil Cross RHAD HCPC Registered MSHAA

Splitting Up? Dividing Pensions on Divorce or Dissolution When a relationship comes to an end and assets are divided up, a pension pot is very often the most valuable capital asset after the family home. With two in five marriages now ending in divorce, couples who do not prepare may find their expected pension benefits significantly impacted when they Helen Bradin, Partner Bradin Trubshaw & Kirwan LLP based on split up. Here, Helen Bradin, Partner Beacon Street, Lichfield. at solicitors Bradin Trubshaw & Kirwan LLP, explains the ways in which pension benefits can be dealt with:
The number of people divorcing later in life is increasing – seven times as many over 60s now call time on their marriage compared to the 1950s. Unless you have a prenuptial agreement which excludes certain assets from your marriage, all financial assets, including pension rights, will be examined and divided by the Court.
There are two main ways in which pension benefits can be dealt with as part of a divorce settlement – offsetting and sharing. The starting point for valuing pension benefits is the cash equivalent transfer value (CETV). Both parties have to disclose the value of their pension pot(s) and/or accrued benefits at the date of divorce.
Pension Offsetting Pension offsetting is a commonly used means of dealing with pension benefits. Each person retains their own pension rights with the value of the assets taken into consideration when valuing all matrimonial assets and the proportion of other assets adjusted accordingly to equal value. So, for example, if one party gains the family home then the other may receive the entire pension to offset the value of the house.
Pension Sharing Pension sharing has been an option for divorces filed on or after 1 December 2000. A pension is split to give both parties a separate pension and is based upon the transfer value of the pension and assets.
State Pensions Under current regulations which apply up to 5 April 2016, the basic state pension cannot be split on divorce or dissolution of a civil partnership although it may be possible to claim a basic state pension based upon an ex-spouses/partner’s National Insurance contribution history. It is also taken into account when deciding how much each party should have in respect of pensions and will therefore still form part of the pension pot. Pensions and Unmarried Couples Cohabitees do not have any legal right to each other’s pensions.

Local crêperie to offer unique live catering solution
T
he Pear Tree Crêperie, the popular crêpe restaurant situated on the outskirts of Lichfield, has recently launched a live catering facility which aims to offer a unique catering solution for any event. The restaurant, which has been established for over 24 years, is offering an on-site crêpe bar service for all kinds of events including weddings, private parties, business events and conferences. "We have seen the popularity of crêpes grow over the last decade, with more people enjoying the many options that we offer,” explains Mark Lewis, who will be running the event catering side of the business. “The customers at our restaurant often ask if we can cater for events, so we decided to create a simple, affordable solution that also provides more excitement than traditional fare such as sandwiches and sausage rolls." As part of its new catering package, The Pear Tree Crêperie will send its chefs, along with all of the equipment necessary, to any location within a 60 minute drive of Staffordshire. “It doesn’t matter what facilities are available as we can provide everything – even gas if there’s no electricity available,” explains Mark Lewis. “Our chefs will then create the crêpes to order, following the traditional recipes that we are famous for, and offering an almost unlimited selection of sweet and savoury toppings.” Mark believes that this will also make a great catering solution for weddings. “I’ve seen recent research suggesting that the average catering cost for a wedding can run into the thousands, which is such a huge amount of money,” he explains. “That’s why we’ve made sure that our extra special wedding package is really cost-effective. In fact, our allinclusive, unlimited crêpe package for 120 people comes in at just £695.” With the success of a crêperie that has been in business for 24 years and serving over 600 customers every week, Mark believes that this expansion is a natural step forward in the future of the company. “I’m excited about what the future holds for us,” he says. “We’ve already gained such a fantastic reputation, it’s time to let more people experience what we have to offer.”

Many residents of Fazeley fought in that conflict and unfortunately, some did not return. “I was pleased with the turnout from Fazeley and very thankful that the weather held off throughout the whole day. Sixty eight ladies attended the inaugural meeting. The guest speaker was Sue Arnold, Deputy Police Commissioner, who spoke on the topics of domestic abuse and women’s issues. Jan Buck and Margaret Key (National Chairman) also attended the meeting. Rebecca Newman and Guests Wow the Garrick
L
ast month Rebecca Newman, who is affectionately known as the ‘People’s Soprano’, gave a superb performance at Lichfield's Garrick, singing to a packed theatre.
Singing songs from her recent album, Dare to Dream, and favourites such as O Mio Babbino Caro, Summertime and Fields of Gold, Rebecca connected well with the audience. She talked of her life and career and created a wonderful atmosphere. Accompanied by her superb string quartet and musical director Tim Lole on piano, Rebecca also introduced to the stage the brilliant Classical Reflections twin sisters who recently got to the ‘Battle stages of BBC's The Voice; and the enthralling local singer Beth Ford from Lichfield, a teen singing sensation. Watch out for both these acts. Rebecca Newman is so highly thought of that she recently toured as ‘special guest’ with Russell Watson. Her debut album, Dare to Dream, is named after a song she wrote. When it was released in September 2014, it went straight to number 1 in the Official UK Classical Albums Charts. Check out her website www.rebeccanewman.co.uk for when and where to see this fantastic singer live.

ixth Form students at Lichfield Cathedral School are celebrating another set of excellent A Level results, which were again an improvement on the previous years' results. Head Teacher, Susan Hannam, said: "Once again we are delighted with the achievements of our students and there have been some exceptional results. Many students gained top grades across the board and are now progressing to the university course of their choice. That 54% of all grades were A* to B is to be celebrated along with our continued 100% pass rate.” Helen Denning gained 3 As and a B and is going to the Birmingham School of Acting for a Foundation year, before going on to a degree course in Acting. Other destinations include the Universities of Birmingham, Lancaster, Loughborough and Sussex to study Mathematics, Ancient History and Sport Business Management. Harry Wilkins and Beth Goodwin both achieved excellent results and gained A*s in the EPQ, the Extended Project Qualification, much prized by universities and employers alike. Students undertake a self-directed research project on a subject of their choice, which helps them to refine their investigation, analysis, presentation and written skills.

Chairman’s charity cheques are presented
ichfield District Council’s former Chairman, David S Smith presented cheques to representatives from his three chosen charities on Tuesday 11 August 2015. In his year as Chairman for Lichfield District Council, David helped to raise £4,869 for charity. The former chairman and district councillor was on hand at District Council House to present cheques of £1,623 to the Friends of St Peter's Church in Stonnall, Lichfield Cathedral's East End Appeal and Forces Children's Trust. The Very Reverend Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield Cathedral accepted the cheque on behalf of the cathedral’s East End Appeal. Ann Black, Chairman of the Friends, and Peter Richardson, Membership Secretary, received the cheque on behalf of the Friends of St Peter’s Church in Stonnall. The Friends group was established in 2008 and has been granted independent charitable status. Gay Smith, the former Chairman’s Lady, accepted the cheque on behalf of the Forces Children’s Trust. This is a charity that is devoted to helping children whose father or mother has died, or has sustained life threatening injuries whilst serving as a member of the British Armed Forces.
otary Cars In The Park is a magnificent Classic Car Show put on by the Rotary Club of Lichfield St. Chad and held annually on the first weekend in July in Beacon Park, Lichfield.
At this year’s event one of our major supporters - Chambers Group of Sutton Coldfield, displayed an old banger of a car which had been purchased for £200. The car was entered in a ‘Banger Rally’ being run for charity. The rally cars involved had to have a purchase price of no more than £300. The charity in this case is Cure Leukaemia For Kids. The arrangement was to raffle the car (a Ford Focus). The winner would win the car or its scrap value if it didn’t make it back to the UK after the rally. The rally started in Saint Quentin in North West France and finished in Monte Carlo. The car was driven by two of Chambers’ Sales Team. They got the car to Monte Carlo and then drove it all the way back to Sutton. The Rotary Club of Lichfield St. Chad made a cash donation to Cure Leukaemia for Kids via Chambers - the monies coming from the proceeds of Cars In The Park 2015. As a result, the Marketing Manager for Chambers - Danielle Howes invited the President of Lichfield St. Chad, David Stainsby, to draw the winning ticket. The winning ticket (number 54) had been sold to Jordan, a Car Valeter. Such was the popularity of the event that some £2000 has been raised for the charity. The Rotary Club of Lichfield St. Chad has been so impressed by this charitable event that in conjunction with the Lichfield New Rotary Club they are planning to enter a banger in the 2016 rally. The Rotary Club of Lichfield St Chad meets every Tuesday evening (except after Bank holidays) in the George Hotel, Bird Street at 6.45pm. HS2 in Staffordshire – Join Ansons Solicitors seminar on 14 October
A
s the reality of HS2 grows ever closer to Staffordshire the need for clarity and advice on the high speed railway increases – both for landowners and professionals in property and business. The Ansons commercial property team will be holding a seminar at 5pm on Wednesday 14 October at Whittington Heath Golf Course to discuss HS2 and explain what it means for property owners in the area, local communities and businesses. A number of speakers will be at the event to discuss issues surrounding HS2 including Neil Faunch and Adele Wakefield, commercial property solicitors at Ansons Solicitors. This includes advice on compulsory purchase orders and applying for compensation schemes, such as the Express Purchase Scheme and Homeowner Payment Scheme. What is HS2? HS2 is the proposed high speed railway line, which will connect London Euston railway station to the Midlands and North of England via the cities of Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds. HS2 is intended to provide a faster way to travel throughout the UK, with trains achieving speeds of up to 250mph and reducing journey times between London and Manchester by around one hour. HS2 phase 1 will be between London and Birmingham. Construction of phase 1 is set to begin in 2017 with an indicated opening date of 2026. HS2 phase 2, which is not set to be operational until 2033, would see the route split into two, one continuing to Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly and the other to Leeds. Is my property on the route? The government has provided an interactive map of the HS2 route, which you can see by visiting www.gov.uk/check-hs2-route. Enter your postcode to see where your property is in relation to the route. Has the route been finalised? Not yet. Minor changes to the route may still occur as the consultation period will allow the public to have their say. The hybrid bill remains on track to achieve royal assent by the end of 2016. Can I claim compensation? This depends on a number of factors. Eligibility for the compensation schemes depends on the location of your property and what phase of HS2 affects you. You may be able to sell your property to the government at its market price, known as unblighted value, or receive a lump sum payment if it is near the route. If you have received a notice we can advise and assist you in issuing a response. Reserve your seminar place now This is an excellent chance to learn more about the impact of HS2, as well as giving you the opportunity to raise any concerns yourself and get advice from our specialist legal team. To reserve your place or for more information, contact Adele Wakefield at Ansons Solicitors on 01543 431182 or email awakefield@ansonsllp.com.

Fundraiser for amazing local Mum
n January 2015 Sue Mould was out jogging in Lichfield when, quite out of nowhere, a tree fell on her breaking her back. She was airlifted to RJAH Spinal Injury unit in Wales where she underwent an emergency operation and over four months of rehabilitation. From her hospital bed she remained positive throughout but because of the serious nature of her spinal cord injury she has now been left with paraplegia and is unable to walk. To help her mother recover, Hayley Ruth Mould, 26, from Lichfield has now decided to set up a GoFundMe fundraising page to help raise money for a wheelchair and a hand-bike to allow her once supe- active mum to be more mobile again. Hayley has raised £1,235 in only two weeks but she hopes with the support of the local community she can reach her target of £4,000. Hayley Ruth said: ”Mum has been selflessly raising money for other spinal injury patients since her accident but now we think it is time to give something back to her. Mum used to be so active; working in education and enjoying hobbies such as running, cycling and hiking, but life is now focused on learning how to do the most basic of things that we all take for granted such as sitting up, or getting in and out a car. It has been a huge transition for her and the family but despite it all, mum has always remained incredibly positive about her situation. “A future goal is to drive again, giving her the independence she needs to live her life. To do this, she would have to lift a wheelchair in and out of the car herself. Currently this is impossible due to the heavy weight of her chair. That is why, along with a group of my friends, we are arranging a series of fundraising events and challenges to raise money to buy her a lightweight Helium Quickie Wheelchair – giving her the independence and freedom she deserves! “With a passion for running, cycling and hiking it has been difficult to overcome the idea that these may never be possible again. However, with the Free Wheeler or Attitude Hand Bike, which attaches to wheelchairs and makes them suitable for off road activities, enjoyment of similar activities may become possible for Mum again.” To donate to the Wheelchair and Hand Bike Fund, please visit: www.gofundme.com/wheelchairhandbike

Maple Hayes GCSE Success
chool leavers at Maple Hayes School have been enjoying GCSE exam success. Many pupils enter Maple Hayes without being able to read or write when they first arrive, but almost Jasmine Fox, Noel Whelan and Jay Kirby every pupil in the year group has secured at least five passes at GCSE, while also gaining a functional grade in English - the subject that has proven to be one of the biggest stumbling blocks throughout their school lives. Almost all pupils are also planning on going on to further education this September.
In total this year, 22% scooped five A*-C grades, with 13% counting English and Maths GCSEs among this figure. 96% of pupils at the school passed with grades including English and Maths. Dr Daryl Brown, headteacher at Maple Hayes Hall, said: “We are absolutely thrilled with these results and they are a credit not only to our hardworking pupils, but to our committed staff who invest so much time - including weekends - in giving these youngsters a fair chance at life. For them to achieve such great results is most definitely down to their hard work and they deserve all the success in life. In fact, the results are nothing short of astounding, given that just a few years ago many pupils were trapped in a system which made them dependent upon support rather than independent learners,”.

Looking ahead to Autumn
s the end of the summer approaches, it’s time to look ahead and plan for a colourful autumn display. Many cottage garden plants are just coming into their own. Try Michelmas Daisies (Aster varieties) for a large show of daisylike flowers in colours ranging from whites to pinks and blues. Japanese Anemones also have good autumn blooms, while Rudbeckia and Crocosmia will continue the show through to October. For pots and containers once your summer plants are exhausted, swap them for Pansies, Violas and Spring Flowering Bulbs. Add in a few heathers and conifers for foliage colour and small pots of shrubs to give further interest and your patio will look colourful right through to next spring with little effort. It's not only the flower garden that can give you more in the winter - use your vegetable garden too. Crops such as Spring Cabbage, Broad Beans, Kale and more can be planted as seedlings now and will mature over the next few months, while fast growers like Spring Onion, Lettuce and Radish will be ready before Christmas. Also consider planting Seed Potatoes for a Christmas Crop - use the special tubers available now and around 14 weeks after planting, you can harvest a supply of new potatoes. Byron Lewis runs Lichfield Garden Centre at Curborough Countryside Centre, Watery Lane, Lichfield. Tel 01543 254306 or visit www.lichfieldgardencentre.co.uk.

Lichfield Canal Trust makes awards shortlist
ichfield Canal’s Heritage Towpath Trail has made the shortlist for a national award. The Living Waterways Awards 2015, run by the Canal River Trust, and recognise the most inspiring and exciting Helen Whitehouse and Peter Buck waterway-based projects across the UK, and the disabled-friendly Heritage Towpath Trail, near the A51 Tamworth Road, is one of three projects vying for the top honour in the Restoration and Historic Environment category. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on October 8.
The Heritage Towpath Trail is part of an ambitious plan by Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust to restore the seven-mile Lichfield Canal, from Huddlesford to Brownhills, which was built at the end of the 18th century but abandoned in the 1950s. There was more good news for LHCRT recently when they were presented with a cheque for £500 by Inland Waterways Association Lichfield branch chairperson Helen Whitehouse. The presentation took place on a walk, jointly organised by LHCRT and IWA, to view the new Lichfield Canal restoration site at Summerhill, where a 1 km section of the canal bed has been cleared, the demolished Crane Brook culvert and embankment have been reinstated, and a section of the Towpath Trail is being opened up to cross the M6 Toll Aqueduct.
This month we look at the birthstone for September – sapphires. Sapphires are extraordinary. Their depth of colour seems to capture the essence of the sky or sea on a summer’s day. Set next to diamonds they are perhaps the most regal of gems. Sapphires have been highly prized for centuries. Medieval people loved them for their extraordinary colour, and believed that they gave protection from harm and the envy of others. Medieval priests wore them as a symbol of heaven and they have graced the fingers of the most beautiful and stylish women from Princess Diana to Elizabeth Taylor.

Elite Dance Academy expands into new areas
lite Academy has had a busy summer term preparing for the launch of their new branch in Armitage and Handsacre Village Hall ready for September. After the success of the Fradley village branch, which has not only grown in numbers, but also in styles of dance available. They have so many students at their main studio in Lichfield, who live in and around Rugeley, and as Elite have been asked numerous times to
Page 46 www.lichfieldgazette.co.uk
start classes in that area, and particularly now with staff increasing it seems the perfect opportunity to do so. The Village branches are a joint venture between Principal Donna Wilcox the founder of Elite and Charlotte Davies who has trained with Donna since she was fifteen and is now Joint Principal of the branches, as well as Head of
Lower School in Lichfield. Miss Amy who will be running the Armitage classes is another young teacher who has come through Elite and is a huge part of the lower school and also teaches at Fradley as well as running the Adult Ballet and Jazz classes. Donna said: “It is so lovely to be able to have our Elite family of staff progress and take on new opportunities through what they love to do and that is to teach dance! I’m so proud of all of the staff and students at Elite, we have a very special relationship of nurturing talent and letting everyone have their chance to shine.” At the end of July Elite had All England Finalists in London to take home Silver medals as well as British Championship semi finalists. Three students being accepted on to the Junior Associate programme Royal Ballet School, three at Elmhurst Ballet school and three at Ballet Theatre UK Associate course. Elite Academy has a strong classical base, a vibrant musical theatre and performing arts training, which makes students complete all-rounders, a true “Triple Threat”. They even have their own theatrical and TV agency, which casts children for professional work. Whether it is a hobby or a vocation Elite accommodates all!
Look after your teeth with regular check-ups T
here’s no arguing the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene. It seems the older we get, the better we understand the consequences of failing to stick to a regular recommended routine. Neglect is usually down to lack of time or the reluctance to spend the money on the health of your teeth. You should keep free of such consequences that can easily result in tooth decay or loss, gum disease and even mouth cancer with six or twelve month appointments. With regular check-ups you can help keep it that way, or it may cost you more in the long run.
Lichfield Family Dental Surgery, now under new ownership, is your local Independent Dental Practice, which understands the relevance of long-term dental health and tailors treatments to meet all individual needs and budgets. A New Patient Examination is just £35, which includes all necessary radiography xrays along with a complimentary scale and polish, and children’s check-ups are free (when accompanied by a fee paying adult). Vicki Hunter, Practice Owner of Lichfield Family Dental Surgery commented: “I took over the business at the beginning of the year and currently welcome new patients. We offer a full range of dental treatments with oral health reviews. We have three fully qualified dentists offering a wide range of treatments including smile enhancing tooth whitening, cosmetic dentistry and facial aesthetics as well as Invisalign invisible braces. Our popular Payment Plan of £9.99 month includes Check up, Clean, X-rays plus 20% discount on treatment for each plan client. Lichfield Family Dental Surgery is open six days, including a late night Monday until 8pm for those who find it difficult to attend during the working day. Why not register your family today? Through the Artist’s Eyes at Emporium
A
n exhibition by sculptor Peter Walker is currently taking place at Emporium Gallery, Bird Street and runs until 9 September. The exhibition entitled ‘Through the Artist’s Eyes’ is twinned with Peter’s exhibition at Lichfield Cathedral and incorporates work from several collections, featuring works of ink on paper, oil landscapes and bronze sculpture. The artist is known locally for several sculptures including the Erasmus Darwin monument in Beacon Park, the ‘Formation of Poetry’ at Greenhill Mews and the ‘Miner and Pony’ statue at Sankey’s Corner, Burntwood. He has recently been commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Lichfield Cathedral to produce a new statue for the cathedral depicting Saint Chad, and has founded the city’s very first Sculpture Trail as part of the ‘City of Sculpture Project’.

The Hamstall Ridware Chalice
ucked away in a small corner of one of the display cabinets in the Treasury at Lichfield Museum is a very small silver chalice and paten. It looks unassuming and is dwarfed by the larger silver items surrounding it. However, it is a very important and attractive object, which demands closer inspection. More importantly, it is the earliest existing example of its type in the country. It has an incurved hexagonal base superseding the circular form. It is made of silvergilt and although unmarked, is believed to date from 1360. The paten or plate which accompanies it would have been used for the bread in the Eucharist and is engraved with the Magus Dei. There is also a very interesting story surrounding its discovery. In 1875, a certain Mr Jaggard, a tenant farmer at Hamstall Farm was digging a drain in the large meadow, (now often called the “common piece”, but referred to on the map as the “Sheep wash”)
Page 50 www.lichfieldgazette.co.uk
By Lichfield Museum at St Mary’s in the Market Square and close to an old willow tree standing near the road to Pearly Farm, when his spade hit a firm object in the ground. To his surprise, he found a very securely parcelled object carefully wrapped and secured. Imagine his reaction when he opened the parcel to find a small, beautiful silver gilt chalice and paten. No one knew how long it had been lying in the ground but because of the secure packaging surrounding it, it was in excellent condition.Who put it there and for what reason remains a mystery to this day. The chalice and paten were first sent to Stoneleigh Abbey, but through the kindness of Lord Leigh and at the special request of the late rector, the Rev. H.Skipworth, they were restored to the parish of Hamstall Ridware on the 1st of April 1875. Although still owned by the Hamstall Ridware parish, it was given to the Lichfield Museum for safe keeping.

The Newsletter of Lichfield City Council - SEPT 2015
A Neighbourhood Plan for the City Councillor David Smedley, Leader of the Council As always during September it will be a busy period for the traditions of the City with the perennial Sheriff’s Ride on 5th September and the Samuel Johnson Birthday celebrations the following weekend. These events both continue to attract large audiences and it is always a pleasure to see so many local residents lending their support at each of the events. The City Council is undertaking the production of a Neighbourhood Plan for the City based on employment and economic themes and will shortly be engaging with the community, local organisations and businesses to obtain a wide range of views on the proposals. An update on our progress will appear in every subsequent edition of this newsletter. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our new Town Clerk, Christopher Moulton, who took over the reigns from Peter Young when he retired last month. Christopher is a knowledgeable manager with over 35 years’ local government experience, and is very familiar with the City Council since he was formerly our Deputy Town Clerk from 2008, – I wish him every success in the role. Looking a little further ahead it seems a good opportunity for me to mention that as usual the City Council will be lighting up the City centre with its festive lights, and to remind you of the date of the traditional switch-on ceremony – which this year will be held on Sunday, 29th November with the assistance from the cast of the Garrick Theatre’s Christmas Pantomime production, Jack and the Beanstalk. As usual this ever popular event will take place on the Market Square and everyone is welcome. Make a note in your diary for the 29th November with entertainment during the afternoon and a Christmas Market, with the switch-on at 5pm.
Neighbourhood planning was introduced by the Government as part of its Localism agenda and is a new way for communities to decide the future of the places where they live and work, in general conformity with the strategic policies in the Local Plan. The government wants to put power back in the hands of local residents, employees and business, councils and civic leaders - those who know best the needs of their local areas. It sees Neighbourhood Plans as a positive force to shape development in local communities. Lichfield District Council, as the Local Planning Authority, designated the Lichfield City Neighbourhood Area in late 2013. This enabled the City Council to commence the process of preparing the Neighbourhood Plan, and it decided to focus the Plan on employment and economic development themes with the aim of effecting genuine economic change over the Plan period to 2029. The principal aim of the Neighbourhood Plan is to increase the number of employment opportunities in the City. The process of producing a Neighbourhood Plan is in several stages and we are currently at the stage of gathering the evidence and opinions from other statutory bodies, local community groups and organisations, businesses and the population. We will be engaging with stakeholders and the community through a planned series of workshops and exhibitions during October and November to explain the proposals; and will be advertising these in advance to encourage a wide response. Once our proposals have been informed by local opinion a draft Plan will be developed and prepared for formal examination and consultation. The final stage of a Neighbourhood Plan is the referendum, so it must be able to obtain majority support from the electors if it is to be adopted. The Plan then becomes part of the formal development plan for the area, with legal force, and helps shape the direction of future employment development in the City.
Everybody is invited to Samuel Johnson’s 306th Birthday party!

A slice of Birthday cake supplied by local bakery Hindleys will be available for all visitors, while stocks last! In addition everyone is invited to ensemble on the Market Square for 12 noon when the civic party and Johnson Society members will gather to watch the Mayor lay a wreath on the statue of Johnson, accompanied by traditional hymns. The ceremony will be followed by an afternoon of entertainment on the Market Square including performances from Intimate Theatre and the City of Lichfield Concert Band, and the annual Young Town Crier Competition.
Johnson’s birthday celebrations are part of Lichfield Heritage Weekend and this year’s theme is ‘Making History’. The right Council…
Lichfield City Council is the ‘parish’ authority for the City and is the smallest of the three councils serving the City area. Within the City we deal with local matters such as the markets, maintenance of open spaces and churchyards, civic and mayoral events, the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum and public lettings of the Guildhall. Lichfield District Council (Tel: 01543 308000) is the larger local authority dealing with such matters as planning, environmental health, refuse collection, housing, car parking, arts and tourism, and leisure services. Staffordshire County Council (Tel: 0300 111 8000) is the responsible authority for wider services such as Education, Social Services and Highways.
Public Participation
City Council meetings are held in the Guildhall, Bore Street. Dates and times of meetings can be found on the notice-board outside the Guildhall, and on the City Council's website at www.lichfield.gov.uk Meetings are open to the public, with public participation sessions held at full Council and at the Planning Committee. What’s on & Dining Out YOUR GUIDE TO WHAT’S ON THIS MONTH IN LICHFIELD
Something for Everyone in October By Phil Preece
It seems as if we’ve only just got used to enjoying warm summer days when the nights start drawing in again. But for all true theatre-lovers this only whets our appetites for the autumn programme with its cornucopia of new productions, and this year looks unusually promising with a bumper crop of treats on offer locally. September has plenty of music acts, headed by ever-popular local lads the Barron Knights at the Garrick on Wednesday 9th, and there are tribute bands aplenty too. Friday 11th has The Bee Gees Story, then there’s Remembering Gene Pitney on Saturday 12th, Morecambe and Wise rebooted on Wednesday 16th and the 17th has The Simon and Garfunkel Story on its (really) 50th anniversary tour.
On Friday 18th we can commemorate the centenary of the First World War with Opera UK’s Keep The Home Fires Burning or be scared witless by Dracula’s Ghost in the Studio, then from Tuesday 22nd to Saturday 26th enjoy Ghost the Musical presented by Lichfield Garrick Youth Theatre. Spooky!
Finally right at the end of the month, starting on Tuesday 29th there’s a show I definitely can’t miss - a production by Different Animal whose Elephant Man excelled even the David Lynch film. Now they’re turning their attention to Noel Coward’s Brief Encounter, incorporating comedy, dance and song!
If like me you’re a fan of BBC’s Countryfile you won’t want to miss seeing engaging T.V. farmer Adam Henson on Friday 2nd October. In total contrast from 8th to 10th one of my all-time favourite ballets, Coppelia will be performed by the superb Vienna Festival Ballet. Book early I say!
What’s On
I really fancy Lichfield Operatic’s The Full Monty from the 13th to the 17th, The Hound of the Baskervilles on the 16th and 17th and on Monday 19th the gala premiere of Doreen - the Movie, featuring the doyenne of Black Country comedy. Plus I definitely can’t miss the recreation of my favourite radio series ever on the 20th and 21st, Round The Horne - The 50th Anniversary Tour, or the Lichfield Players’ “Don’t Dress For Dinner” from the 20th to the 24th. Finally in this something-for-everybody month there’s Grimethorpe Colliery Band (Saturday 24th), Sutton Coldfield Musical Theatre’s Peter Pan (27th to 31st) and Oh Whistle, two ghost stories by M.R. James (27th), then Opus Theatre Company does local comedy writer David Tristram’s latest, “Going Green”.
Minted. See you there!

Move over Grande Canal The best Pizzas are not in Italy… they’re in the ‘Mucky Duck’ at Fradley Junction!
The Swan or ‘Mucky Duck’ at Fradley Junction has a huge reputation for good food, but now it is “move over Venetian Grande Canal” and “enter the Coventry & Trent & Mersey Canal”, because this famous old pub has a treat in store. To supplement its already extensive menu their ‘National Award Winning Chef’ (2013) is baking awesome freshly made mouth-watering hand-stretched Pizzas. The like have never been seen in these parts. The chef uses his skills to produce 9 and 12 inch pizzas throughout lunch and evening (also take away available). Great on a summer’s evening with a glass of Italian wine with varieties such as: ‘Bitter Sweet’ with Mozzarella and caramelised onion; ‘All-day-Pizza-breakfast’ with bacon, egg and black pudding; Americano, Hawaiian; and Calzone. Follow that with coffee made from real Lavazza beans Something for everyone It’s easy to enjoy Fradley Junction with all its colour and tranquility and its nearby nature reserve, which features in a couple of published British Waterways trails, or just sit with a beer (or a cup of tea) and watch the world float by. Over the past six years Rick & Tracey have resisted the urge to make The Swan into a trendy ‘gastro pub’ and kept it as a traditional canalside-socialising pub that folk have loved for well over two hundred years. Open 7 days a week, The Swan has something for everybody – it’s a retreat from the hurly burly of everyday life. It has a Sunday Carvery every week 12-3 with five meats and fresh vegetables for £10 inc. sweet and coffee. Lunch is served Mon-Sat 12-2.30 with a full menu available every evening 5.30 – 9pm. If your fancy is for traditional and homemade foods then The Swan is the place to enjoy a mixed grill, sirloin steak, beer battered cod, pork-belly & black pepper plus homemade curries and pies. Plus freshly made sandwiches, snacks and much more. Beer and entertainment The Swan has a superb selection of beers on draught such as Abbot and Pedigree, with four guest ales on all the time (So there’s always something new available) And of course all your popular ciders and lagers. And talking of something for everybody – why not call and enjoy the evening entertainment. Every Thursday evening is Folk Night, with Open Mic on Sunday evenings together with other events on throughout the summer months. Rick & Tracey extend a warm welcome and suggest you rediscover Fradley Junction and The Swan this weekend. FIND US IN THE CAMRA GOOD BEER GUIDE
