ABOUT THE BOOK
Children are curious about what happens at night, especially when they go to sleep and realize that the people around them are still awake. This is a natural curiosity, and in “Daylight, Nightlight” it is explored from nature’s point of view.
Many people work at night and their services are essential for life in the city. In the field of health or even education; servants, doctors, journalists… And in nature too, there are animals and plants that are more active at night.
In this book, the same scene is revealed during the day and at night, showing what changes and what remains in the landscape. The Amazon rainforest is the setting and the people, fauna and flora are the main characters.
At the end, there is an invitation for the reader to reflect on what changes and what remains in the place where they live as day turns to night. Here, literature tightens its links with nature and its way of life in a poetic and lyrical way.
THERE IS NATURE
“Daylight, Nightlight” has been awarded the There is Nature seal for valuing the integration of children and young people with nature through literature, something that not only enriches the imaginative world of readers, but also contributes to the formation of individuals who are more aware, curious and connected with the environment around them and with the nature present in the preservation areas of parks and reserves. Empathy, admiration and knowledge are part of our environmental education and, here, the children’s book is a possible support for this construction.
In this book, the presence of the Amazon Rainforest contributes to spreading the word about its beauty and the animals and plants that live there and that enchant people around the world. Observing the life that takes place there through the short, poetic text and the beautiful illustrations in the book is an experience of immersion in the biomes of the Amazon. The human presence is portrayed in full harmony with nature, valuing the ways of life of the native peoples. The work was produced based on extensive research into the region’s fauna and flora and its results are reflected in the text and imagery.
But nature in “Daylight, Nightlight” is not presented in a watertight way, on the contrary. Time is one of the elements of the narratives and the plot unfolds as it passes from day to night and from night to day. Discovering that the forest is an active “being” even at night will be new for many readers, broadening their understanding of nature and how it works.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
My name is ALOMA and I am a writer, editor and translator of children’s books, especially books that show nature. I love plants and animals, especially those that belong to the fauna and flora of Brazil – the country where I was born – and I live in a region of mountains, forests and waterfalls. That’s why I decided to write this book, which shows the Amazon rainforest in all its glory. I think readers of all ages will appreciate the beautiful illustrations that accompany the text and show how enchanting the passage of time is. The trees, animals and people that appear in the book have been carefully crafted so that the reader can hold a little piece of our immense forest in their hands. My work has already been recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Education for the quality of the texts and images, by the UNESCO Chair Seal for its literary quality and by the UN’s SDG-Agenda 2030 Reading Club Library for its dedication to the environment. I like books with simple texts and word games, ensuring a pleasant literary experience for everyone and promoting the actions of the UNESCO Global Alliance for Literacy through family reading.
ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR
My name is CAMILA CARROSSINE and I am a writer and author of children’s books. I was born and raised in the city of São Paulo and spent my childhood scribbling on paper, drawing all day long. Sometimes I even drew on the walls of my bedroom or living room… I just loved drawing. That’s how I decided to study Visual Arts and today I even have a postgraduate degree in Art Direction. I’ve been working as an illustrator since 2010 and I’ve illustrated more than 60 books for publishers in Brazil and abroad. My books were selected by the FNLIJ - National Children’s Book Foundation for the Selection Bologna Children’s Book Fair and by the UN – Agenda 2030 to be part of the ODS Reading Club Library. As well as being an illustrator, I’m an award-winning animation director – my films have been shown at festivals in various countries since 2008 – which reinforces my experience and ability to create stories through images. I just love it!
