Ana Maria Machado is the author of more than 100 books. Her work has been translated in 19 countries. In 2000, she won the Hans Christian Andersen Award, considered as the Nobel Prize of world children’s literature. In 2001, she received the greatest national literary prize, the Machado de Assis Award. In 2003, she became a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. She received the Prince Claus Award in 2010 from Holland, which is given to artists and intellectuals of recognized contribution in the field of culture and development.
These fables were previously published in the book True Classics: Greco-Roman Myths and legends, by Nova Fronteira, 2003, considered by FNLIJ as Highly Recommended in the category of Retelling, Translation and Adaptation, 2006.

TWO FRIENDS were traveling down a road when, suddenly, a bear appeared.

Before the bear could see them, one of the men ran to a tree on the side of the road, grabbed a branch, and managed to pull himself up and hide among the leaves.

The other man was not as quick, and since he was heavier, he wasn’t strong enough to pull himself up alone. He hung from the branch for a while, and when he realized it would be impossible to escape that way, he threw himself on the ground and played dead.
