Al igual que sucede con muchos circuitos en los que ya no se organizan carreras, mencionar el nombre de Montjuich evoca el pasado. De hecho, nos lleva vuelta atrás medio siglo, cuando el Gran Premio de España de F1 se celebraba regularmente en ese trazado. Entre los ganadores se encuentran Jackie Stewart (1969 y 1971), Emerson Fittipaldi (1973) y Jochen Mass (1975). Allí también compitieron otras categorías y, en abril de 1967, el gran Jim Clark consiguió la victoria en uno de los primeros eventos de Formula 2 en un Lotus 48. Los coches que participaron en lo que fuera el campeonato que alimentaba la F2 entre 1967 y 1978 volverán a Montjuich este fin de semana gracias al Euro F2 Classic, ¡una conmemoración de nivel!

Montjuich también fue escenario de eventos de resistencia, como los Barcelona de 6 horas y 12 horas, o los 1000 km. de Barcelona. Una curiosidad: Peter Auto usó esa misma denominación en 2008 y 2009 para las rondas de las Le Mans Series celebradas en el Circuito de Barcelona-Catalunya. La transición se ha completado y, aunque el circuito de Montjuich ya no se usa, su espíritu aún está vivo en Montmeló. Sin embargo, era necesario un evento para vincular estos dos lugares, alejados unos 30 kilómetros y, gracias a la Escudería Targa Iberia, desde 2011 disfrutamos del “Espíritu de Montjuïc”, celebración a la que Peter Auto se enorgullece de unirse este año.

A diferencia del circuito de Montjuich, que tenía una reputación peligrosa en su momento, el circuito de Barcelona-Catalunya ha envejecido bien. Más de 25 años después de su inauguración, en 1991, todavía se usa como el punto de referencia de los equipos de F1 en sus entrenamientos de preparación de marzo, antes de que dé comienzo la larga campaña anual. Por lo tanto, qué mejor lugar que éste para inaugurar la temporada 2018 de las carreras históricas de Peter Auto, antes de dirigirse a Spa-Francorchamps, DijonPrenois, Le Mans, Le Castellet e Imola. Vale la pena señalar que el Classic Endurance Racing ya se celebró aquí en 2008, 2009 y 2013, al igual que el Group C Racing en 2013, 2014 y 2015, pero no el resto de categorías de Peter Auto. Los pilotos del Euro F2 Classic, el Heritage Touring Cup, el Sixties ‘Endurance y el Greatest Trophy se enfrentarán a un verdadero desafío cuando descubran la pista española. Y un último vistazo al pasado. La evocación del nombre de Montjuich nos remite al famoso equipo local del mismo nombre, que finalizó segundo en el Tour de France Automobile de 1971 con un llamativo Ferrari 512S. Este prototipo, reconocible gracias a su característica carrocería amarilla, competirá en el CER 1 el domingo. Este fin de semana, Montjuich y Montmeló serán uno y el mismo.

Like many circuits which no longer host races, evoking the name Montjuich conjures up the past, half-a-century ago in fact when the Spanish F1 Grand Prix was held there on a regular basis. Among the winners were Jackie Stewart (1969 and 1971), Emerson Fittipaldi (1973) and Jochen Mass (1975). Other categories competed there too, and in April 1967 the late great Jim Clark in a Lotus 48 emerged victorious in one of the first Formula 2 events. Cars that raced in what was the F2 feeder championship between 1967 and 1978 will be back again at Montjuich this weekend thanks to Euro F2 Classic - a fitting commemoration!

Endurance events also took place there with the Barcelona 6 Hours, 12 Hours and 1000-km events. In passing, it’s amusing to recall that Peter Auto revived the last name in 2008 and 2009 for the Le Mans Series rounds held on the BarcelonaCatalunya track. The transition has been made and although the Montjuich circuit is no longer used its spirit is still alive in the heights of Montmeló. So what was needed was an event to link these two places that are some 30 kilometres apart. This has been achieved since 2011 thanks to the Escudería Targa Iberia, the creator of the “Espiritu Montjuïc” which Peter Auto is proud to join this year.

Unlike the Montjuich circuit that had a dangerous reputation at the time the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit has aged well. More than 25 years after its inauguration in 1991, it is still used by the F1 teams as the benchmark against which to fine-tune their cars in March before the year’s long campaign begins. Thus, what better place than this yardstick to kick off the 2018 season of Peter Auto historic races before heading for Spa-Francorchamps, Dijon-Prenois, Le Mans, Le Castellet and Imola. It’s worth pointing out that Classic Endurance Racing already competed here in 2008, 2009, and 2013 as did Group C Racing in 2013, 2014 and 2015, but not the other Peter Auto grids. So the drivers in Euro F2 Classic, the Heritage Touring Cup, Sixties’ Endurance and the Greatest Trophy will be faced with a real challenge when they discover the Spanish track.

And a final hark back to the past. The evocation of the Montjuich name brings to mind the eponymous team, a renowned local privateer outfit, which finished second in the 1971 Tour de France Automobile with its striking Ferrari 512S. This prototype recognisable thanks to its characteristic yellow livery will be racing in CER 1 on Sunday! This weekend, Montjuich and Montmeló will really be one and the same.
