Our legacy

Thanks to the countless remains that can be found throughout the Sierra del Retín and Sierra de la Plata, we know of the existence of settlements that could date back to Prehistoric times, with the presence of cave paintings, megalithic constructions such as dolmens, menhirs and cists; tombs carved into the stone, and even remains of a Visigothic Church.

Most of the caves are protected today since they have already been intentionally defaced with graffiti and scratches. As the Sierra del Retín belongs to the Ministry of Defence and the paintings are near an army training camp, access is forbidden to visitors and hikers. The caves at Sierra de la Plata, however, can be visited, but there are no signposts, so it is recommended to hire the services of a local guide if you wish to visit them.

Nuestros vestigios

A través de los innumerables vestigios repartidos por las Sierras del Retín y sierra de la Plata, se conoce la existencia de núcleos poblacionales que podrían datar de la Prehistoria, con la presencia de abrigos con pinturas rupestres, construcciones megalíticas como dólmenes, menhires y cistas; tumbas escavadas en la piedra y hasta restos de una iglesia visigoda. La mayor parte de los abrigos se encuentran protegidos debido a que ya han sido dañados intencionadamente con pintadas y raspaduras. Debido a que la Sierra del Retín pertenece al Ministerio de Defensa y están cerca de un campo de adiestramiento de la Armada, su acceso está vedado a los visitantes y excursionistas. Los abrigos de la Sierra de la Plata en cambio pueden ser visitados pero están desprovistos de toda señalización que los identifique por ello es recomendable contratar algún guía local para visitarlas.
