$SUNRISE $

Ahoy, Turf Pirates! I hope that you are all staying cool and handling all matters with the ease of a tropical breeze. Things are busy this time of year so it’s even more important to occasionally slow down, look around and soak in the moment. We who have had the honor of working on the golf turf side of things often find ourselves watching the sunrise over our green master works. Unfortunately, we are often so busy that we blaze right by amazing scenes of nature as we execute the strategic agronomic plans of the day. However, sometimes we are stopped in our tracks by the colors and sounds that stretch out before us. This month’s spin is just that, you see one of my outstanding assistants grabbed a photo of a newly (last Fall) seeded wildflower and pollinator area literally just outside the shop gate (#4 TPC for the locals). Now realize that the entire crew had recently stampeded the area and James was riding drag and looking for stragglers when he happened upon this scene (see the photo). It’s a snap shot of all that we hope to achieve. I was so impressed that he not only stopped, took a second and took the photo but when he showed it to me, he said, “I think it would be a good green’s committee presentation picture. He was right, the green’s committee loved it! The best pictures often tell more than one story.

Now on to the moral of today’s bigger story. Golf Course Superintendents and their staff are often stressed and pressed to say the least. We try to handle millions of things all at once and sometimes while we burn the candle at both ends, we start to break down mentally and physically. Have you ever felt that time was rushing by too quickly and you wanted to shout, stop! Do you realize that while we can’t stop time from marching on, we can change the flow of our perception of it (after all time is merely a concept). Which brings us back to sunrises. Turf Pirates are uniquely aware that we do not know how many sunrises we will be blessed to see so we treasure each one in its own worth. There will eventually come a tomorrow that will not feature our presence in it so be in the now Turf Pirates. Take sometime away from the fray to be aware, grateful and project yourself into an awareness of how that we are all wonderfully made and that our work is an extension of our inner craftsmanship. The point of gazing at a sunrise is to feel the joy of what lies ahead. Today is what we make of it, we can choose to be anything, feel anything. The homework assignment this month Turf Pirates is to open your eyes, breathe deeply and find evidence of your worth. Turf Pirates have from the beginning been many voices, but one uplifting song. We are connected in the struggle to move within the laws of nature to craft amazing experiences in golf and life. Keep on making the magic everyone, look to the east and believe that the sun also rises.
