Ready to restart

After one year and a half of pandemic, what are the moods of the tanning entrepreneurs on the eve of Lineapelle and Simac Tanning Tech?

“Over 600 companies already registered for the next Lineapelle give the idea of the will to restart, of the creative force that animates the entrepreneurs of the sector. While aware that, in some respects, the event will still be penalised by the health situation, the need of physical presence is clear, which no digital event, no single company presentation can ever replace”.

Can we already talk about a restart at least for some market segments?

“The market situation still appears uneven between the various target segments: furniture is growing, footwear is still in great difficulty, leatherware and automotive are fluctuating”.

Pronti a ripartire

Dopo un anno e mezzo di pandemia, quali sono gli umori degli imprenditori conciari alla vigilia di Lineapelle e Simac Tanning Tech?

“Oltre 600 aziende già iscritte alla prossima Lineapelle danno l’idea della volontà di ripartenza, della forza creativa che anima gli imprenditori del settore. Pur consapevoli che la manifestazione sarà ancora penalizzata per certi aspetti dalla situazione sanitaria, è chiara l’esigenza di una presenza fisica, che nessun evento digitale, nessuna singola presentazione aziendale potranno mai sostituire”.

Si può parlare di ripartenza, almeno per alcuni segmenti?

“La situazione di mercato appare ancora disomogenea tra i vari segmenti di destinazione: cresce l’arredamento, la calzatura è ancora in forte difficoltà, altalenanti pelletteria ed automotive”.

What are the moods of the tanning entrepreneurs on the eve of Lineapelle and Simac Tanning Tech?

“I think that the moods of tanners can only be very positive. There is a huge recovery expectation, which is partially already underway, after almost two years of a very intense pandemic. The desire to restart is there! Brands are disposing of excess inventory stuck in the lockdown months and people in the world start travelling again and participating in events, while fairs are reopening. Personally, I shortly expect a recovery if not at pre-pandemic levels, then very close. It is obvious that some uncertainty will persist as this virus has accustomed us to unexpected situations and sudden peaks, but we need to stay positive and proactive. Even if I do not expect a fair attendance at pre-Covid levels, the mere fact that Lineapelle and Simac return as a physical event represents a very strong injection of confidence for the whole sector”.

Quali sono gli umori degli imprenditori conciari alla vigilia di Lineapelle e Simac Tanning Tech?

“Penso che gli umori dei conciatori non possano che essere molto positivi. C’è una grande aspettativa di ripresa, peraltro in parte già in atto, dopo quasi due anni di pandemia, molto forte. C’è la voglia di ripartire! Le griffe stanno smaltendo gli inventari rimasti bloccati nei mesi di lockdown e nel mondo si ricomincia a viaggiare e a partecipare a eventi, le fiere sono in riapertura. Personalmente mi aspetto una ripresa a breve se non ai livelli ante-pandemia, comunque molto vicino. È ovvio che un po' di incertezza permane sempre visto che questo virus ci ha abituato a situazioni impreviste e picchi improvvisi, ma dobbiamo rimanere positivi e proattivi. Anche se non mi aspetto una presenza alle fiere a livelli precovid, il solo fatto che Lineapelle e Simac ritornino in presenza rappresenta una fortissima iniezione di fiducia per tutto il settore”.

Come imprenditore a quale particolare tipo di tecnologie è interessato al momento? Quali novità vorrebbe trovare in fiera?

“Servono tecnologie che possano assicurarci una piena sostenibilità, quindi macchinari a risparmio energetico e che contribuiscano al minor utilizzo di prodotti chimici. Il nostro settore deve potersi definitivamente scrollare di dosso i vecchi pregiudizi, in un confronto aperto con i materiali alternativi che di sostenibilità hanno ben poco, se non l’impatto mediatico e comunicativo. E su questo tema penso che l’azione congiunta di tutta la filiera della pelle, macchine comprese, sia fondamentale in uno sforzo di contrasto agli attacchi quotidiani che riceviamo. La pelle è un materiale nobile e probabilmente il più sostenibile che c’è. Vorrei trovare anche tecnologie che garantiscano l’assoluto rispetto delle norme sulla sicurezza dei lavoratori auspicando che uno standard elevato come quello italiano ed europeo possa venir adottato anche in altre parti del mondo”.

As an entrepreneur what particular types of technologies are you interested in at the moment? What news would you like to find at the fair?

“We need technologies that can ensure full sustainability, therefore energysaving machinery that contributes to the lower use of chemical products. Our sector must be able to definitively shake off its old prejudices, in an open confrontation on alternative materials that have very little in common with sustainability, if not the media and communication impact. I think that, related to this issue, the joint action of the entire leather supply chain, including machines, is essential in order to combat the daily attacks we receive. Leather is a noble material and probably the most sustainable that exists. I would also like to find technologies that guarantee absolute compliance with the safety regulations for workers, hoping that a high standard such as the Italian and European one can also be adopted in other parts of the world”.

“The technological evolution of the tanning sector towards innovative approaches capable of promoting an increasingly sustainable and conscious management of the process, in compliance with the principles of traceability, quality and respect for the environment and the health of operators and consumers, has recently seen an increasing use of 4.0 technologies. This choice derives from the fact that among the aspects linked to this technological approach that contribute to determining positive effects in terms of sustainability of the processes, the ability of the solutions used to determine the saving of water, energy and chemical products within the production cycle must be mentioned, as well as the possibility of identifying solutions for remote monitoring and the control on critical parameters in production and purification plants. Some of the new strategic actions of the Italian Leather Research Institute are oriented in this direction, particularly in relation to the synergy with actors from the 4.0 world, which has recently been consolidated, and through joint participation in Research Projects promoted by the Italian Leather Research Institute co-financed by MISE, which see the collaboration of ASSOMAC for the identification of the solutions described, as in the SINAPSI project, and through the collection of technological offers deriving from the Open Innovation Programme promoted by the Italian Leather Research Institute, called “Leather Innovation Challenges 2025”, one third of which within the scope of “Industry 4.0 and smart leather factory”. Starting from the involvement of the highly qualified partners with whom the Italian Leather Research Institute collaborates, it will be possible to offer advanced technological support to companies in the sector and outline a strategy for the districts that provides for the use of advanced sustainability tools and the circularity of production processes”. “L’evoluzione tecnologica del settore conciario verso approcci innovativi in grado di favorire una gestione sempre più sostenibile e consapevole del processo, nel rispetto dei principi di tracciabilità, qualità e rispetto per l’ambiente e la salute di operatori e consumatori, ha visto recentemente un crescente impiego di tecnologie 4.0. Tale scelta deriva dal fatto che tra gli aspetti legati a questo approccio tecnologico che concorrono a determinare ricadute positive in termini di sostenibilità dei processi, va menzionata la capacità delle soluzioni impiegate di determinare il risparmio idrico, energetico e di prodotti chimici nell’ambito del ciclo produttivo, oltre alla possibilità di individuare soluzioni per il monitoraggio ed il controllo da remoto di parametri critici negli impianti produttivi e di depurazione. In tale direzione sono orientate alcune delle nuove azioni strategiche della Stazione Sperimentale, particolarmente in relazione alla sinergia con attori provenienti dal mondo 4.0, che si è recentemente consolidata, sia attraverso alla partecipazione congiunta a Progetti di Ricerca promossi dalla SSIP co-finanziati dal MISE, che vedono la collaborazione di ASSOMAC per l’individuazione delle soluzioni descritte, come nel progetto SINAPSI, sia attraverso la raccolta di offerte tecnologiche derivanti dal Programma di Open Innovation promosso dalla SSIP, denominato “Leather Innovation Challenges 2025”, nell’ambito del quale, circa un terzo delle proposte hanno riguardato l’ambito “Industria 4.0 e leather smart factory”. Proprio partendo dal coinvolgimento dei partner altamente qualificati con cui la Stazione Sperimentale collabora, sarà possibile offrire un avanzato supporto tecnologico alle imprese di settore, e potrà essere delineata una strategia per i distretti che preveda l’impiego di strumenti avanzati per la sostenibilità e la circolarità dei processi produttivi”.

Quali innovazioni tecnologiche vi aspettate di trovare in fiera?

“Macchine ed attrezzature sempre più rispondenti ai nuovi paradigmi dell'Industria 4.0. In particolare, le innovazioni devono poter consentire un reale controllo di processo, attraverso l'implementazione di sistemi robusti di controllo delle performance delle operazioni ad umido, ed il monitoraggio della resa di tutte le operazioni conciarie, anche di quelle meccaniche. Un particolare sforzo di innovazione può essere dedicato anche alla movimentazione interna alla conceria delle pelli, tenendo conto delle diverse caratteristiche e necessità delle stesse pelli nei diversi stati di lavorazione, così come il dosaggio, la preparazione e la movimentazione automatizzata dei prodotti chimici rappresenta un’ulteriore aspettativa correlata alla necessità di garantire la tracciabilità delle produzioni richiesta dal mercato”.

What technological innovations do you expect to find at the fair?

“Machines and equipment increasingly responsive to the new paradigms of Industry 4.0. In particular, innovations must be able to allow real process control, through the implementation of robust systems to control the performance of wet operations, and monitor the yield of all tanning operations, including mechanical ones. A particular innovation effort can also be dedicated to the movement within the leather tannery, considering the different features and needs of the same leather in the various processing stages, just as the dosage, the preparation and the automated handling of chemical products represent a further expectation related to the need to ensure the product traceability in manufacturing required by the market”.

I see desire for recovery Vedo voglia di ripresa

“What are the moods of tanning chemists on the eve of Simac Tanning Tech? “It is not easy to interpret in a global way the feeling measured in the various Italian tanning districts, as each one has its own specificity and diversified feature. Some feel better and are coming out well, others are still suffering and having a tough time. Personally I am positive and I believe that, if between vaccines and attention put in place after this sad experience, we will return to an almost-normal, there will be a desire for recovery that will drag social life, travels and the market. In our sector, I see a constant increase in attention to production that is ever more respectful of the environment and the health of people who use leather products. The pandemic has certainly taught us something and even nature reminds us to do so, every day; and nature does not forgive ... We are therefore called, in our tanneries, to continuous improvement, on every front!”.

What are the most innovative technologies that you expect to find at the fair?

“In recent decades, but even more so in recent years, manufacturers of tannery machinery have made extraordinary improvements with exceptional proposals. It is a recognition that we must give them for the technical and technological innovation that they managed to bring to our tanning companies and to those around the world. And the whole world recognises this merit! Personally, if I had to hope for innovations in a specific field, I would hope to find news in the field of suction abatement of spray booths and tunnels. I believe it possible to further develop improvements in this sector, which, perhaps, is still lacking in investments and progress, that have instead been made in other areas”.

Quali sono gli umori dei chimici conciari alla vigilia di Simac Tanning Tech?

“Non è facile interpretare in maniera globale il sentore che si misura nei vari distretti conciari italiani, perché ognuno ha una sua specificità e caratteristica diversificata. Qualcuno sta meglio e ne sta venendo fuori bene, qualche altro sta ancora soffrendo e trova maggiori difficoltà. Personalmente sono positivo e credo che, se tra vaccini e attenzioni messe in atto dopo questa triste esperienza, ritorneremo ad una quasi normalità, ci sarà una voglia di ripresa che trascinerà vita sociale, viaggi e mercato. Nel nostro settore vedo crescere costantemente l’attenzione verso una produzione sempre più rispettosa dell'ambiente e della salute delle persone che utilizzano prodotti in pelle. La pandemia sicuramente qualcosa ci ha insegnato e anche la natura ci richiama in tal senso, tutti i giorni; e la natura non perdona… Siamo pertanto chiamati, nelle nostre concerie, al miglioramento continuo, su tutti i fronti!”.

Quali tecnologie innovative si aspetta di trovare in fiera?

“I produttori di macchine per concerie hanno fatto negli ultimi decenni, ma ancor di più negli ultimi anni, miglioramenti straordinari con proposte eccezionali. E' un riconoscimento che dobbiamo dare loro per l'innovazione tecnica e tecnologica che sono riusciti a portare nelle nostre aziende conciarie ed in quelle di tutto il mondo. E tutto il mondo gli riconosce questo merito! Personalmente, se devo auspicare innovazioni in uno specifico ambito, mi auguro di trovare novità nel campo dell'abbattimento dell'aspirazione delle cabine e dei tunnel degli impianti di spruzzatura. Credo che questo sia un comparto sul quale si possono sviluppare ulteriori migliorie e nel quale, forse, non sono ancora stati fatti tutti gli investimenti e i progressi che sono stati invece realizzati in altri ambiti”.
