ABOUT IRVINE RANCH… Irvine Ranch is proud of our rich Kansas heritage and family farming tradition. Our family’s ancestors were among the first settlers in the Manhattan, Kansas area, arriving in 1855. A log cabin was built in the Blue Township in Pottawatomie County in 1856. The farming and ranching tradition began at that time, and it has continued to the present. Our agricultural ventures have greatly expanded, and are now owned and operated by 5th and 6th generation Kansans. The 7th generation is on the ground and starting to work their way into the operation. The log cabin has disappeared, but some of that Flint Hills pasture that was utilized by the earlier generations, over one hundred years ago, is still used in our operation today. Our present cowherd can trace its roots back over 80 years. In 1927, George Irvine, our father and grandfather, purchased 25 Hereford cows at the stockyards in Kansas City. The cows were shipped by rail to Manhattan. With that group of cows serving as a foundation, we have progressed with a continuous and uninterrupted herd of cattle, from that humble beginning to today’s registered operation. Many of the cows in our herd can trace their roots back to the 1927 foundation. Through the years, we have supplemented our existing cowherd with the acquisition of a handful of superior purebred Simmental and Angus cows. In 1968, we started using Simmental bulls in our AI breeding program. We joined the American Simmental Association in the early 1970s and have been registering Simmental cattle since that time. In the late 1980s, we joined the American Angus Association and began incorporating Angus genetics into the herd. For approximately 40 years breeding bulls were sold off the farm, beginning with Horned Hereford and then Simmental. As our program began to grow, we recognized the value of having an annual sale. Bulls have been marketed through the annual sale on the 1st Saturday of November, since 2005. Annually, the top 50% of the bull calf crop make the cut. Starting in 2010, we will also offer breeding females in the sale. We are firm believers in the value of Simmental genetics. Current Simmental genetics are well suited to provide balance and strength in all facets of beef production. By combining the Simmental influence with rigorous selection for economic traits and the use of EPD's, we have been able to improve our herd in all aspects. The Angus genetics have been added to complement the strengths of the Simmental genetics. Our herd improvement “blueprint” is focused on improving genetic traits affecting profitability for our beef-producing customers. Our goals are to improve early growth, carcass quality, feedlot and maternal efficiency, while maintaining easy calving cattle that are fertile, tame, and moderate in mature size. Our systematic genetic approach is designed to move the genetic trend of our herd and our customers herd’s in the direction of greater profitability. The breeding animals we sell are "vehicles" designed to deliver these enhanced genetic packages to our customer's herds. The Simmental and Angus breeds provide the best opportunity to allow us to accomplish our aggressive objectives. Irvine Ranch looks forward to continued success in producing superior genetics for our customers by combining our rich tradition and heritage with modern advancements in beef production.

Glossary of Terms and Abbreviations PERFORMANCE and GENERAL TERMS Calving Ease (CE): The opposite of difficult or abnormal calving. An easy calving is one that does not require assistance and does not impose undue strain on the calf or dam. Calving Score (CS): A measure of calving where: 1=unassisted birth; 2=hand assistance; 3=mechanical assistance. Actual Birth Weight (ACT BW): A weight taken within 24 hours of birth. Birth Weight Ratio (BW Ratio): An expression of the animal’s adjusted weight at birth relative to the contemporary group average. Note: There is a difference in expression of BW Ratio between the Simmental and Angus Breed Associations. A Simmental with a below average birth weight will have a ratio greater than 100 (ratios above 100 are more desirable). An Angus with a below average birth weight will have a ratio less than 100 (ratios below 100 are more desirable). Adjusted Weaning Weight (ADJ WW): An off-the-cow calf weight adjusted to 205 days of age and to a mature dam age equivalence. Adjusted Weaning Weight Ratio (WW Ratio): An expression of the animal’s performance for adjusted weaning weight relative to the contemporary group average. Ratios >100 are above average, Ratios <100 are below average. Adjusted Yearling Weight (ADJ YW): A weight adjusted to 365-days of age. Adjusted Yearling Weight Ratio (YW Ratio): An expression of the animal’s performance for adjusted yearling weight relative to the contemporary group average. Ratios >100 are above average, Ratios <100 are below average. N/C: No contemporaries. Test Gain: The average daily gain of an animal for a fixed period of time. Note: The sale bulls were gain tested for 92 days. Test Gain Ratio: The individual bull’s gain performance relative to the contemporary group. A gain ratio above 100 reflects above group average gain and below 100 reflects below group average gain. Note: For the purpose of the Test Gain Ratio, all sale bulls were considered to be in one contemporary group. Adjusted Frame Score (ADJ Frame): Based upon hip height measured in inches and adjusted to a 365-day basis, using BIF standards. Adjusted Scrotal Circumference (Adjusted Scrotal): A measurement of the distance in centimeters around the testicles in the scrotum with a circular tape. Related to semen producing capacity and age at puberty of female sibs and progeny. Converted to a 365-day basis, using BIF standards. Homozygous Black: An animal that will always pass on a black gene to its progeny. Denoted in “COLOR” box as “BB”. Heterozygous Black: Although the animal is black-hided (Black is Dominant to Red), it may pass on a red gene to its progeny. Denoted in “COLOR” box as “Bb”. Note: Sale bulls that were not known to be homozygous black by pedigree were DNA tested by Pfizer (www.pfizeranimalgenetics.com). Homozygous Polled: An animal that will always pass on a polled gene to its progeny. Bulls noted as “Homozygous Polled” are out of two parents that have tested Homozygous Polled. Ultrasound % IMF Ratio: An ultrasound measurement of the percent intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle, relative to animals within the same contemporary group. Ultrasound RE Ratio: An ultrasound measurement of the area in square inches of the longissimus muscle between the 12th and 13th rib, relative to animals within the same contemporary group. Ultrasound BF Ratio: An ultrasound measurement of the fat thickness at the 12th and 13th rib, relative to animals within the same contemporary group. Note: Calves born as a result of embryo transfer are evaluated in a separate contemporary group for ultrasound traits. ASA: American Simmental Association AAA: American Angus Association BIF: Beef Improvement Federation

IRVINE RANCH RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST Irvine Ranch is retaining a ½ semen interest in all bulls selling in this offering. The purchaser of the bull will have possession of the bull and all salvage value rights. In the event of any semen sales from the bull, then Irvine Ranch is retaining ½ interest in the gross revenue from all semen sales. Irvine Ranch retains the semen interest if the bull is sold to subsequent purchasers. Irvine Ranch also reserves the right to collect semen from the bull at the buyer’s convenience and our expense. This retained semen interest extends to any clone of the bull. If you have any questions about the retained semen interest, please contact us prior to the sale.

IRVINE RANCH BREEDING GUARANTEE AND SALE TERMS

All bulls in this sale have passed a breeding soundness evaluation by Dr. Shelie Laflin, KSU Medical Teaching Hospital. If a bull becomes a nonbreeder within 12 months of his purchase, Irvine Ranch will either provide you with a suitable replacement, if one is available, or provide you with a credit equal to the bull’s purchase price less his salvage value. This guarantee does not apply to bulls that die or are killed. It is recommended that if you use your bull for the first time in the spring of 2011, he should be re-evaluated for breeding soundness prior to breeding time. Irvine Ranch offers this guarantee in addition to the American Simmental Association suggested Sale Terms and Conditions. The ASA suggested Sale Terms and Conditions will be available for your review on sale day, and can be found at: www.irvineranchgenetics.com In our effort to provide both quality breeding genetics and customer service, we ask that you let us know if you are not satisfied with your purchase for any reason.

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPD’S) The difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future progeny of an individual of average genetic merit. Reported in units of measurement for the trait (e.g. lb., cm, etc.). Production EPD’s: Calving Ease Direct (CE): Predict the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when bred to first-calf heifers. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease. Birth Weight EPD (BW): BW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring when compared with another animal in the same genetic evaluation. Birth weight EPDs are primarily used as an indicator of calving ease, with the age and size of the females to be bred usually dictating how much birth weight can be tolerated. Weaning Weight EPD (WW): WW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences in weight that can be expected between the progeny of animals in the same genetic evaluation at 205 days of age. Weaning Weight EPDs do not account for differences in weaning weight that are due to milk. Yearling Weight EPD (YW): YW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences that can be expected between the progeny of animals at one year of age. Maternal EPD’s: Maternal Calving Ease EPD (MCE): Predict the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to the daughters of another sire in the same evaluation. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births. Maternal Milk EPD (MM): Milk EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by a bull’s daughters. They reflect the average differences in weaning weight that can be expected in grand progeny due to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Available feed resources will dictate the extent to which milking ability should be selected. Maternal Weaning Weight EPD (MWW): Total Maternal EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by an animal’s daughters. They account for average differences that can be expected from both weaning weight direct as well as from milk, and measure a sire’s ability to transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters. Stayability EPD (STAY): Stayability is defined as the probability that a sire’s daughters entering the herd will stay in production through 6 years of age. The Stayability EPD provides an estimate of how long a sire’s daughters will stay in the herd compared to another sire in the same evaluation. Higher values indicate greater stayability. Carcass EPD’s: Carcass Weight EPD (CW): CW EPD’s estimate average differences in carcass weight, expressed in pounds at a given age endpoint. Yield Grade EPD (YG): Predict the average differences in cutability that can be expected between the progeny of animals at a given age endpoint. As with all EPDs, YG is expressed as a deviation. Negative values are desirable. To use it, one must keep in mind that it is in yield grade units. Therefore, lower is better. For example, a bull with a -.33 YG EPD would be expected to sire offspring that are 1/3 of yield grade better (lower) than a zero bull. If zero bulls sired an average yield of 3.0 in a particular environment and management system, offspring of a .33 bull would be expected to have an average yield grade of 2.67 (1/3 of a yield grade better/lower). (Simmental) Marbling EPD (MAR OR IMF): Predict the average difference in USDA Quality Grade in an animal’s progeny when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in numerical marbling score where one point equals one USDA marbling score. Backfat EPD (BF or FAT): Estimate the average differences that are expected in external fat thickness at the 12th and 13th rib between progeny of different animals. Expressed in inches at a given age endpoint. Ribeye Area EPD (RE): Predict the average difference in ribeye area in an animal’s progeny when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in square inches.

SIMMENTAL – API $ and TI $ EPD INDEXES: Though EPD’s allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPD’s and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry, and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the $ indexes. The API and TI indexes calculate the estimated differences between bulls in net dollars returned per cow exposed for two different herd scenarios as described below. All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Consequently, maternal traits such as milk, stayability, and maternal calving ease are not considered in the index.

If you retain replacement heifers use the API index, if not, use TI. Individual EPD’s are still relevant for making improvements in specific traits. The API$ and TI$ provide a valuable estimate of total genetic merit. See “Constructing ASA’s Economic Indexes” by Dr. Wade Shafer later in this catalog.

EXPEDITION represents the best of our genetic effort thusfar. He was the top weaning, yearling, and IMF bull of the 2009 calf crop. Not only is he in the TOP 1% of the breed in many individual traits, at $153 for All Purpose Index and $95 for Terminal Index, W413 stands near the very top of the ASA database. Easy fleshing, tremendously thick, homozygous polled, with a good disposition. We are enrolling W413 in the ASA Carcass Merit Project and collecting semen for in-herd sampling.

Full brother to Lot 1, also ranking in TOP 1% of the breed for $API and $TI. As a group the sale bulls rank in the TOP 5% of the breed for marbling. Lot 1 and 3 were the high IMF bulls of this contemporary group. Calves from these bulls will be easy to market at weaning, or retain on feed and sell on a carcass grid. Given their cow family, they should also produce nice replacements. Homozygous Polled.

W401 is one of our most complete prospects this year. Excellent EPD's and ratios in all categories, with TOP 1% $API and $TI. His dam was one of the top performing heifers in the 2007 calf crop. She has developed into a very nice cow with a perfect udder. W401's granddam, J684, is an 11 year cow that just had her 11th natural calf (one set of twins).

The Lucky One X L749 has been one of our best matings. A Full Brother, R219 was the high seller in our 2006 sale to Don Gudenkauf. Daughters are making nice replacements in his herd. You will notice many bulls in the catalog are out of W410's full sisters. They exemplify the type of cows we select for: early maturing, easy keeping, fertile cows that wean a heavy calf every year.

Constructing ASA’s Economic Indexes

T

By Wade Shafer, Ph.D., ASA Director of Performance Programs

hough not a scienti¿c poll, based on my interaction with breeders there seems to have been a substantial increase in the use of our economic indexes since their introduction. I get call after call from breeders who are using them — or at least are curious about their use. There have been several breeders of late who have asked for more speci¿c details on the construction of our indexes. Given the interest, I thought it may be worthwhile to delve a little deeper into what makes them tick. Since several articles pertaining to ASA’s All Purpose (API) and Terminal (TI) indexes have been published in the Register I will not take time for the basics (e.g., de¿ning them); for those wishing for a quick reference on our indexes see page 46 in the March SimTalk , more thorough description can be found by clicking the library icon at www.simmental.org. Some are of the impression that we use our intuition to construct our indexes, much like a chef would put together a gourmet meal —a dash of this and a pinch of that and voila! The truth is that it is not nearly that exciting. ASA’s indexes are constructed very similarly to the way an accountant would calculate projections on how the purchase of a piece of equipment will impact a ¿rm’s bottom line. In doing so, the accountant has to estimate how the equipment will perform, i.e., how much output will be achieved and what level of input will be required to achieve it. This is where EPDs come in. Because they are calculated by using all available information on the over 6,000,000 animals in our database, EPDs provide far and away the best prediction of the output and corresponding input expected in a sire’s offspring. These output and input traits are those required to calculate pro¿t — the type of information an accountant would need to make

economic projections on a piece of equipment. In animal breeding lingo, these are called economically relevant traits. The traits relevant to our All Purpose Index (API) are listed below: Table 1. Economically Relevant Traits in API U U U U U U U U U U U

Salvage weight Female longevity Milk production Cowherd intake Feedlot intake Calf survival Weaning growth Post-weaning growth Carcass weight Yield grade Marbling

Beside the fact that the list is extensive due to API covering virtually all segments of a production system, in perusing it you probably noticed that we only publish EPDs for some of these traits. For example, though you have all seen our weaning growth and carcass EPDs you undoubtedly have never seen our cowherd or feedlot intake EPDs. I say that like we have them. We do! You may be wondering how that can be since we do not collect data on those traits. The answer is that we calculate EPDs for traits we don’t collect data on by using traits we do collect data on. For example, research has shown that there is a very strong genetic relationship between feedlot intake and growth; i.e., animals with genes for rapid growth very likely eat more in the feedlot — hardly a surprise. Since we collect loads of data on growth, we can leverage what we know about a sire’s growth genetics with the strong relationship between growth and intake to predict feedlot intake on the sire’s calves. We also know that the size of a sire’s daughters and their milk production level provides insight about

the energy they will need to maintain themselves and wean a calf, i.e., their intake requirements. Through this process of combining our knowledge of genetic relationships with the data you submit on calving ease, growth, carcass traits and stayability, we are able to predict the genetic level for each of the eleven traits used in the calculation of API. Because cowherd traits are not important in terminal sire selection, only the last seven traits are economically relevant to TI. Predicting an animal’s genetic merit in the economically relevant traits provides the biological components required to determine an animal’s impact on pro¿t. Now we need to tie economics to the biology. This is accomplished via a computer simulation program developed by USDA research geneticist, Dr. Mike MacNeil. Dr. MacNeil’s simulator mimics beef cattle production on the computer — cows conceive, gestate, calve, lactate, rebreed, calves are weaned, open and old cows are culled, heifers are retained, and cull heifers and steers are placed on feed and eventually harvested. You do not get dirty raising computer cows—but you can sure answer a lot of questions! The ¿rst step in tying biology to economics with the simulator is generating a “ base” herd. The base simulation calculates the pro¿tability of the average half Simmental, half Angus herd. Simmental x Angus was chosen for the base, as Angus is the predominant cow in the commercial industry by a country mile. It stands to reason, therefore, that the bulk of Simmental bulls will be used on Angus cows. The averages of the basic biological traits of this virtual base herd can be found below: CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

Constructing ASA’s Economic Indexes CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE

Table 2 . Biological Trait Averages for Base Simulation Weaning weight: 550 lb Feedlot gain; intake: Phase 1 (80 d): 2.51 lb/d; 26.86 lb/d Phase 2 (50 d): 2.92 lb/d; 21.90 lb/d Phase 3 (100 d): 3.81 lb/d 26.67 lb/d Cow size: 1250 lb Milk production: 5283 lb/lactation Pregnancy rate: 84% Dystocia heifers (direct): 20% Dystocia heifers (maternal): 20% Calf survival: 96% Harvest weight: 1277.8 lb Dressing: 62.9% Carcass weight: 803.7 lb Marbling score: 5.14 Yield grade: 2.8 Of course, we also need estimates of future prices and costs to make economic projections for this herd. Yes. I said future prices and costs. Because we are selecting seed stock that will produce offspring in the future, future prices and costs are what are pertinent to us. We have used multiple sources to make these predictions (e.g., CattleFax, economists, and industry experts). This is an area where we played the gourmet chef and used intuition to some degree. When it comes to predicting the future, there is inevitably some guesswork involved. Fortunately, studies have shown that price and cost predictions can be off by a substantial margin and economic indexes still tend to rank

animals fairly similarly. This may sound counterintuitive, but there are solid reasons for it: 1) because each trait is only a piece of the overall pro¿tability puzzle, if the economics of a particular trait change dramatically (e.g., the choice/ select spread drops to zero), its effect on the index is limited to the degree the trait impacts overall pro¿t, 2) because prices and costs tend to move together over time, the impact of an off-base prediction in one area will likely be counterbalanced by an errant prediction in another. For example, if inÀation is predicted to be 3% and ends up being 6% both prices and costs are likely to be underestimated by an average of 3% with the net impact on the index being minimal. A sample of the prices and costs used in index calculation can be found below:

Table 3 . Prices and Costs Salvage price: $.45/lb Hay: $.0325/lb dm Pasture: $26/ac/yr Feed; fixed costs Phase 1: $.036/lb; $.51/d Phase 2: $.039/lb; $.80/d Phase 3: $.067/lb; $.80/d Carcass prices: Base: $121/cwt < 550 lb: - $15/cwt > 950 lb: - $7/cwt >1000 lb: - $17.50/cwt Prime: + $8.00/cwt High Choice: + $3.50/cwt Choice: + $1.50/cwt Select: - $11.00/cwt Standard: - $20.00/cwt

YG 1: + $4.00/ cwt YG 2: + $2.00/ cwt YG 3: $0.00/ cwt YG 4: - $15.00/ cwt YG 5: - $20.00/ cwt Once the base simulation is complete, we have very valuable information — an estimate of the future pro¿tability of the average Simmental x Angus herd. This information provides a benchmark from which we derive weightings for each economically relevant trait. This is accomplished by changing each trait one unit while holding all others steady and comparing the difference in the bottom line with the base herd. (This undertaking would be virtually impossible in the real world; however, computer cows make it a piece of cake!) Armed with EPDs on each animal for the economically relevant traits and weighting factors based on the impact these traits have on pro¿t we calculate economic indexes— the overall economic value of an animal. There you have it, my attempt at taking some of the mystery out of our economic indexes. In a nutshell, the process is best described as genetic accounting. Though the concept may be new to the beef industry, economic indexes have been central to the monumental genetic progress seen in the poultry, swine, and dairy industries over the last several decades. Given the multitude of biological and economic factors impacting pro¿t, assimilating them all in our minds in the hope of accurately assessing the economic value of a genotype is akin to taking a half-court shot from the seat of your pants to win the game— highly unlikely. Your chances of accurately assessing an animal’s economic merit are greatly enhanced by using tools that apply a rigorous, accountant-like method to predicting pro¿t, in other words, ASA’s economic selection indexes.

Indexes project the overall economic value of an animal. This article is from the April 2008 ASA Register.

THE FEMALES THAT SELL:

The females selling represent the first public auction offering of a group of breeding females in our 83 year history. There a re no culls selling in this group, only cows that we would be just as willing to retain in the herd. Our program is now generating more quality replacement females than we have the ability to maintain in the herd, and we are proud to offer this group. The ability to offer these quality females is the result of three genetic improvement strategies: 1.) Strict culling - Heifers and cows that fail to meet high standards are culled. 2.) Use of quality, proven sires through Artificial Insemination for over 40 years. 3.) Embryo Transfer - Our first attempt at ET was in 1987, and was used with limited success from then until 2004. Beginning at that time we set a goal to produce 40-50% of the annual calf crop from the best 3% of our cowherd, via embryo work. This goal has been achieved with the result being an improvement in both consistency and quality every year. The AI sired calves at side represent cutting edge genetics. As a group they have an average API of $131, which ranks them in the TOP 4% of the breed. All cows are open and should be ready to start breeding anytime fit for your program. If you purchase a first calf heifer(s) remember they are still growing and manage them accordingly to insure they breed right back. A sale supplement sheet will be available to update calf information not available at the time o f the catalog being published. This supplement will be available at the sale, or ahead of the sale at: www.irvineranchgenetics.com
