Jill’s Lady was not what we would call today a “typical cutting horse” as she was a 15.3 hand mare that weighed in at about 1,100 pounds. This is how her size was reported in the article written by Duane Valentry “Palomino With A Past” that was featured in the August 1964 issue of the WESTERN HORSEMAN. And as we look at the modern cutting horse this certainly holds true, as her size was not typical of the cutting horse we see today. But as we delve into the life of Jill’s Lady she was not necessarily a “typical cutting horse” in a variety of ways and this allowed her to become a very special individual.Yes she can be considered one of our mares with more as a performer and producer. Jill’s Lady started life headed to being a “typical” ranch horse as she was born on a working cattle ranch. The Jessie Herring Johnson Estate that owned the famed Y Ranch of Paducah, Texas and the Herring Ranch of Stinnett, Texas bred Jill’s Lady. Jessie Herring Johnson was the daughter of C. T. Herring, the founder of the Herring Bank at Vernon and several other notable Texas enterprises. Both the Herring Ranch at Stinnett and the Y Ranch at Paducah are still in operation and owned by descendants of C. T. Herring.

THORNTON

the stallion Caliente. Caliente was a son of Del Rey. Del Rey gives us our first indication of where the cow sense of the Jill’s Lady line of horses may have come from. Del Rey was a noted stock horse in the early days of the California Reined Cow Horse world. The pedigree information on Del Rey is limited. He was foaled in 1918. His sire was a thoroughbred named Swedish King. Swedish King was sired by Rey El Santa Anita. Rey El Santa Anita was bred by Lucky Baldwin. Baldwin developed his Santa Anita Ranchero into a top thoroughbred nursery. This breeding program bred many top runners including four winners of the American Derby and that includes Rey El Santa Anita. The Lucky Baldwin breeding program also produced Americus, the sire of Americus Girl. Americus Girl was the dam of Lady Josephine. Lady Josephine was the dam of Mumtaz Muhal. Mumtaz Muhal was the dam of Mumtaz Begum, the dam of *Nasrullah. Of course *Nasrullah was the sire of Bold Ruler, the sire of Secretariat winner of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.

Our story of Jill’s Lady will begin with the purchase of Gold Rush by the Jessie Herring Johnson Estate in 1953. The Tom L. Burnett Estate that owned the famed Triangle Ranch of Paducah, Texas owned Gold Rush at the time. The Y Ranch and the Triangle Ranch were neighbors that had common fence line. Gold Rush was a proven sire on the Triangle Ranch as he had put many of his sons in the ranch remuda and his daughters in the ranch broodmare band plus he had sired what was to become the AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Hollywood Gold. Hollywood Gold stood on the Four Sixes, the other famous Burnett Ranch at Guthrie, Texas. Gold Rush was the sire of Belle Burnett, the dam of Peppy Belle, the dam of the NCHA World Champions Peppy San and Mr San Peppy. Gold Rush was bought and brought to the Triangle Ranch to sire Palominos. He came from California. C. B. Lowry was his breeder. Lowry bred a Sorrel Mare (breeding unknown) to Page 24

The dam of Del Rey is a mare that is listed in the pedigree as Queen. She was a Palomino mare. Her breeding is unknown but it was believed that she came from a ranch in Utah. Del Rey has the distinction of being the sire of a Palomino Foundation sire. He was the sire of El Rey de Los Reyes. El Rey de Los Reyes was the first horse registered in the Palomino Horse Breeders of America and the Palomino Horse Association. The dam of Jill’s Lady was Y-Cheta. This mare was bred by the Y Ranch She was sired by Jay Y Man, a thoroughbred. Jay Y Man was sired by Trimmer by Mad Hatter. Mad Hatter was a ¾ brother to Man O’ War. The dam of Jay Y Man was *Bed Ray by Dam Bede. Jay Y Man was the sire of a thoroughbred mare named Bell Version. She was the dam of Verna Leo, an AAA rated runner by Leo.Verna Leo in turn was the dam of Speedy Shoes. Speedy Shoes was the dam of Doc’s Tom Cat by Doc Bar. Doc’s Tom Cat was the sire of Doc’s Sangria, the 1987 NCHA Open World Champion Cutting Horse. Doc’s Sangria earned the NCHA Certificate of Ability, Silver Award, Bronze Award, Gold Award and the Platinum Award. Y-Cheta was out of a daughter of Redwood. He was sired by Madway Tenacity, a thoroughbred by Bull Dog Tenacity. Redwood was out of Miss Anson by Harmon Baker by Peter McCue. The produce record for Y-Cheta shows that her first two foals were Johnson’s Amy and Johnson’s Mimi. They were both sired by Rancher Jr by The Rancher. Rancher Jr was bred by the Burnett Ranch. Jill’s Lady was the only AQHA performer out of Y-Cheta. Gold Rush sired Jill’s Lady in 1957. She was owned by a number of people including Allen Hendrek, who is reported by Valentry in his story to be the one to name her. She was named after Hendrek’s daughter Jill. C. G. Brown started her and he was the first one to show her. It was while he was showing her that a young trainer named Leroy Ashcraft first saw her cut. Ashcraft remembered it this way, “The first time I saw Lady was at Bryan, Texas at A & M. I had a little ole sorrel cuttin’ horse and I was trying to learn how to cut. This was in about 1960 or 61. The first thing I knew, the people around the arena were screaming and car horns were honking and this guy I didn’t know named C. G. Brown was riding Jill’s Lady. This mare was nearly 16 hands and her legs were the size of a baseball bat. She didn’t have a muscle on her and she’d stop this cow and she would cross her front legs and then spread them out as wide as they would go. She did that about three or four times during that cuttin’.” “Now every cutter like Bob Burton, Milt Bennett, Matlock Rose and Buster Welch was there, about 42 cutters and I didn’t personally know them but when that cutting was over

THE WORKING HORSE • JANUARY 2010

she had won it.” “Then about two or three months after that cuttin’ a guy named James A. Cheek bought her and he paid about $5,500 for her.” “In the mean time I had bought a horse for $1,500 and his name was Cross Timber. They had bought him off the track and he was by a horse named Quicksilver King. So I bought this horse and I thought he was the best looking horse I had ever seen.” Continued on page 28 Swedish King (TB) Del Rey Queen2 Caliente Unknown Sire Unknown Dam Unknown Dam Gold Rush Unknown Sire Unknown Sire Unknown Dam Sorrel Mare Unknown Sire Unknown Dam Unknown Dam

Continued from page 25 Ashcraft went on to explain that he sold two good horses to get a $1,000 and he tried to buy Cross Timber, but the man wanted $1,500. Ashcraft eventually bought Cross Timber and started working him. He would do day work with him sorting cattle and then work goats on him at night. When he started showing the horse, he went to winning at cutting and halter. The first time he showed Cross Timber at halter, he was named the Grand Champion. He beat many of the top trainers and their horses with Cross Timber. As he put it, “Cross Timber made me a horse trainer. He filled my barn with horses to train.” He later sold Cross Timber to Louis Pearce from Houston for $6,500. It wasn’t long until Ashcraft got a call from James Cheek wanting to put Jill’s Lady in his barn. This resulted in the forming of a partnership on the mare when Cheek gave him half interest in her. Ashcraft later bought Cheek’s half in the mare for $7,500. She was his until he sold her to Dr. Don Wade. Ashcraft was excited to get her but Jill’s Lady came with some baggage. She had soured and was very difficult to get to work. She would literally run over you if she got the chance. He started her reconciliation to go back to the cutting pen by day working her separating cows and calves for people and then working her on goats at night. This was similar to what he did with Cross Timber. He put a lot of miles on her by loping her. It was common for them to go from Ponder where he lived to Denton a distance of about 11 miles. He eventually got her back on track and started showing her in the fall of 1962. This great mare took her size and parlayed it into a great cutting career, as Ashcraft would show her to a number of accolades in the arena. She was in the NCHA Open Top Ten in 1963 earning a fourth place. She earned 150 AQHA cutting points in 1963. This record shows that she wasn’t “typical” as a cutting mare as she had a foal in June of 1963. The foal died a few days after it was born, but she went on not missing a beat.

When Ashcraft sold Jill’s Lady to Don Wade, she would be shown some but would primarily serve the rest of her life as a very good broodmare. Wade a noted breeder that had bred and/or owned such noted horses as Sugar Vaquero, an NCHA World Champion and the NCHA Top Ten Horse Deuce Five. He was a one-time partner in the North Wales Quarter Horses in Virginia. Don Wade and North Wales Quarter Horses combined to breed 25 AQHA Champions. Wade bred 13 in his own name and he bred 12 in his partnership with North Wales Quarter Horses. Dr. Wade had some very interesting ideas on Jill’s Lady and her cow sense and abilities as a cutting horse. Wade stated it this way; “Jill’s Lady lacked ability but made up for it with desire and cow sense. She was a tremendous cow horse having so much thoroughbred blood in her. She was a big mare and had a little length to her, but she made a total effort to get the job done. When she was right it took a very very top horse to stay with her.” He continued, “I think her ability to handle a cow was near the top. I would think that she was just behind Marion’s Girl in her idea of what she ought to do to correct or stop the cow. I think her ability to get around or maneuver was her only fault. She was tremendous. The nicest kind to have. She was smartreal sharp.” Ashcraft told about how Dr. Wade found out what kind of mare Jill’s Lady was with an example of her herd work. Ashcraft recalled it this way, “I was staying with Doc and he kept asking me when I was going to work my mare. Well on a Friday before we went to a show in Delaware, I told him I didn’t feel good and I said, “why don’t you tune her for me.” Continued on page 32

Jill’s Lady was the 1964 NCHA Open Reserve World Champion behind the World Champion Hollywood Lin. Hollywood Lin was a granddaughter of Gold Rush, the sire of Jill’s Lady. Jill’s Lady won $29,860.49 in the NCHA earning a Certificate of Ability, Bronze and Silver Award. The complete AQHA show record of Jill’s Lady shows her with 348 AQHA points. She was Superior in cutting winning 64 of 124 AQHA shows she entered. She was the 1964 AQHA High Point Cutting Mare. She earned 97 cutting points in 1964. Page 28

Continued from page 28 He continued, “So he goes in the pen with about 30 head of what looked like Hereford show cattle. She was very soft in the mouth and he had her head straight up. So I told him to back off to the back fence and I’ll tell you how to work this mare. So he backs to the back fence and I said “Show her one” and then I said; ‘Now move that cow off to the right and drop her.’ She took that cow right off. Now I told him to give her a foot of slack and then I said “kick her a little bit” and so he started out and he gave her a little more slack so she would know he was not going to hurt her. When he came out of the herd he was laughing. She was the only herd horse I ever saw like that. I tried to make all of them that way. When we were done Doc said “I’ve seen a lot of horses but I’ve never seen one like Jill’s Lady.” Jill’s Lady started her career as a broodmare in 1967. She was the dam of Tabano Jill by Tabano King. This mare entered the cutting pen to earn $1,142.78 in the NCHA with no AQHA record to report. The next foal out of Jill’s Lady was Lady Leo Jill. This mare came in 1968 and she was a daughter of Bar H Leo by Leo. Thus we have the Joe Reed/Gold Rush cross in this mare. The crossing of the blood of Joe Reed and Gold Rush will be very prominent in the foals of Jill’s Lady. Lady Leo Jill proved her prowess as a cutter by winning $6,231.27 in NCHA earnings and the NCHA Certificate of Ability. She earned her ROM with 19 AQHA performance points. Lady Leo Jill was the dam of three performers. They are Decatur Streak by Decatur Doc. This horse was ROM in the AQHA with $34,732 in NCHA earnings with a Certificate of Ability. The next foal out of Lady Leo Jill was Miami Tari by Doc Tari. This horse won the NCHA Certificate of Ability with $4,129 in earnings. Grannies Lady was the third performer from this mare. She was a daughter of Doc O’Lena. She earned $8,194 and the NCHA Certificate of Ability.

This is Kitty Rose, the dam of Betty Warren. It has to be noted that the white located behind her wither indicates that she might have been ridden quite a bit.

The third foal out of Jill’s Lady was Leo Lady Jill. This mare was foaled in 1970 and sired by Bar H Leo, the son of Leo. Leo Lady Jill was unshown but she had five performers. They were Decatur Leo by Decatur Doc. This horse earned 34 AQHA cutting points for his ROM. He earned $16,332 to earn an NCHA Certificate of Ability. Her next performer was Doctor Athena by Doc Athena by Doc O’Lena. This gelding earned six AQHA cutting points and $10,721 in the NCHA for a Certificate of Ability. The next performer was Decatur Gold by Decatur Doc. This horse earned $3,781 in the NCHA for the Certificate of Ability and three AQHA performance points.

Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum.

The fourth foal we’re going to list is Solano Jill, an NCHA Certificate of Ability winner with $2,374 in earnings. Solano Jill was sired by Doc’s Solano. Solano Jill is the dam of Gins Solano by Tanquery Gin. This 1981 gelding earned $286,503 in the cutting pen. He was the 1985 NCHA Breeders Cutting Champion in the Four Year Old Open. Solano Jill was the dam of Easy Dual It, a third place finisher in the NCHA Amateur Futurity. Next is Decatur Rush an NCHA money winner. Decatur Rush was sired by Decatur Doc. Continued on page 36

Continued from page 32 Jill’s Lady Leo was another unshown daughter of Jill’s Lady. She was sired by Bar H Leo by Leo. She was the dam of four point earners. We will start with her son Don Solano, by Doc’s Solano. This horse was the NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Reserve Champion in 1979. He earned $7,850 for the Certificate of Ability in the NCHA and he has three AQHA cutting points. Next on this mares list is Decatur Jane. This mare earned $52,074 garnering the NCHA Certificate of Ability and the NCHA Bronze Award. She had 25 AQHA performance points for an ROM. Her third foal was Sonitas Pete by Sonitas Last. This horse was a 1988 AQHA World Show Finalist in Junior Cutting. He earned $7,651 for an NCHA Certificate of Ability to go with his AQHA ROM and 15.5 points. The fourth point earner out of this mare is How Do Freckles by Freckles San Man. This horse earned 48 amateur performance points and 83 open performance points with a Superior in team penning. The next performer out of Jill’s Lady was the famous cutting gelding Gold Rush 2. My Leo Mambo by Leo sired him. This good cutter earned several prestigious awards. He was the 1978 AQHA High Point Cutting Horse and an AQHA World Show Top Ten Finalist in Senior Cutting. His NCHA record includes the Bronze Award, Silver Award, Gold Award and the Platinum Award. He earned $165,976 in the cutting pen with 105 AQHA cutting points and a Superior in cutting. Gold Rush 2 takes us to some comments by Don Wade and the cow sense of the Jill’s Lady line of horses. He explained the situation this way “One of those that I rode a lot and showed some was Gold Rush 2. We worked or parted cattle for days and days at a time. Gold Rush 2 by the time I had ridden him three months was the best horse in South Florida to part cattle. Pairs and so forth.” “The peculiar thing about him was that I could ride him in a bunch of cattle and when I talk about a bunch you have to understand, running from 200 to 400 head of cows. We would ride the pairs out as the calves were born so that we could put the cows and their calves in better pastures. Our traps where we held them were 200 yards wide and a quarter mile long and we’d put 200 to 400 cows and what ever calves we had on them in one end of it. Then we’d ride and drive the pairs to the far end. I used him (Gold Rush 2) to sort those cows and after 90 days he was the best in the country. He’d get to goofing off and I would discipline him. The cows would separate and then just come right back to him. He gave off a sense to the cattle that didn’t spook’em or scare’em. Of course when he was shown that was evident. Tremendous herd horse. He could sneak through a bunch of cows and they’d hardly move.” The next foal out of Jill’s Lady was Prince Beau, an Appendix registered horse sired by Water Prince, a thoroughbred. This horse earned two AQHA performance points. The last performer out of Jill’s Lady was Count The Gold by

Page 36

Doc’s Solano. This palomino stallion earned 55 AQHA cutting points for the Superior Award. He was the reserve AQHA High Point Cutting Horse in 1980; High Point Cutting Stallion in 1980 and the High Point Junior Cutting Horse in 1980. He placed sixth in the AQHA World Show Top Ten in Junior Cutting in 1980. He was fourth in the 1979 NCHA Open Futurity. He earned $30,406 in the NCHA for his Certificate of Ability. Count The Gold is the sire of Count The Spots, winner of $138,614.78. This paint gelding was a two time American Cutting Horse Association Open Top Ten Champion and a member of the ACHA Horses Hall of Fame. Count The Gold sired Count The Emeralds, a two time PHBA World Champion Open Cutting Horse. Count The Gold, Don Solano and Solano Jill were the results of a deal Dr. Wade made with Cabby Bryant, the owner of Doc’s Solano. Wade bred several mares to Doc’s Solano for a nominal fee of $300.00. Doc’s Solano was the youngest horse to ever win an AQHA Championship. He was sired by Doc Bar and out of Susie’s Bay by Poco Tivio. Dr. Wade sold Jill’s Lady and her foals back to Leroy Ashcraft in 1976 where she foaled Count The Gold. She died before she could produce another foal. She coliced and died while in foal to Peppy San. This would have been an interesting cross as Peppy San was a grandson of Belle Burnett by Gold Rush. Jill’s Lady truly wasn’t your typical cutting horse. She was too big by today’s standards but what really set her apart and made her not so typical was her cow sense and herd work. Leroy called her “the greatest herd horse he had ever ridden” because she knew her job was to drive that cow out of the herd and she did it with ease and sense. She was truly a mare with more.

As a young man going to high school in Grand Island, Nebraska one of the things I liked to do was going out to see my favorite horse. His name was Smutty Bill. He was owned by C. F. “Fred” White. The White’s lived just four miles south of town and I went to visit every opportunity that came up. Smutty Bill was bred by R. L. Underwood of Wichita Falls, Texas. Underwood was a driving force behind the formation of the AQHA. He was the third President of the AQHA. Underwood owned and bred many fine horses. But he was mostly noted for his breeding program that focused on the Copperbottom bred horses. The Copperbottom line is considered the second oldest family of the modern quarter horse. The most famous of the Copperbottom horses was Cutter Bill, the 1962 NCHA World Champion Cutting Horse and now AQHA Hall of Fame member. Cutter Bill and Smutty Bill were full brothers.

Herring would expand his business ventures to include building sections of the Texas and Pacific and Cotton Belt Railroads. He started in the banking business with the C. T. Herring Banking Company in 1895 in Vernon, Texas. The C. T. Herring Banking Company is still in existence today as the Herring National Bank with branch banks in Amarillo and several other communities in Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado. Herring expanded into the hotel business and lumber companies. The hotels he not only owned but also built were the Wilbarger Hotel; the Palo Duro Hotel and the Herring Hotel. The lumber companies grew to thirteen in number and were located throughout North Texas.

While this was all going on his ranching activities expanded over the years to include the Flagg Ranch A review of Underwood’s (formerly breeding program shows the Seven-Up that he concentrated the Ranch); the L blood of Copperbottom S Ranch; the through a stallion named Y Ranch; the Golden Chief. Early H-Anchor research by Underwood Ranch and the and Helen Michaelis found Kit Carson that Golden Chief was Ranch. T. Herring. is still part of the family ranching business. Colonel C. T. Herring would be what we consider today an entrepreneur with wide business interests. Herring built a business empire that included a number of ranches, lumber companies, hotels and a bank. Herring started out ranching in Archer County running cattle with his partner Bill Stinson. Herring later leased land in the Oklahoma Territory and started running cattle on leased land. Herring was like many during this time period in that he was a business associate and friend to the great Comanche Chief Quanah Parker. Page 44

The Herring Ranch at Stinnett was originally known as the Kit Carson Ranch. The original name came because the famous Kit Carson reportedly camped in this area on a Buffalo Hunt. The H-Anchor Ranch was located in the Big Bend area and is now a part of the Big Bend National Park. C. T. Herring passed away in 1931 and his daughter Jessie and her husband L. K. Johnson carried on his legacy. L. K. Johnson was the second President of the Herring National Bank. L. K. was originally a teacher. THE WORKING HORSE • JANUARY 2010

The Johnson’s had two daughters, Cornelia and Louise. Cornelia married and became Corneilia Herring Slemp. Her husband was from Virginia. The Slemp’s had only one child. Her name is Cornelia Jane Slemp. Cornelia married C. C. Burgess and they have four children. Today C. C. Burgess is Chairman of the Board of the Herring Bank. He is an AQHA Director. Louise became Louise Thomas but never had any children. Bob Denhardt in his story “Lee Underwood, Third President of the AQHA” that appeared in the July 1960 issue of THE QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL, tells us that Underwood was an employee of C. T. Herring. Herring gave Underwood the opportunity to start the Underwood Drilling Company. This venture led to the business success of R. L. Underwood and this business success allowed him to become a breeder and influence in the early development of the American Quarter Horse Association. Herring also gave Underwood the stallion Golden Chief, a Copperbottom bred horse. Underwood wrote a note on the letter he got from a man named Leon Van Meldert that explains Herring’s role in the Copperbottom story. This letter and note were found in the Denhardt files at the AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum. Underwood wrote, “Mr Herring was raised in Hill County, Texas and came to Archer County in 1880 and ranched there until 1885, then moved into Indian Territory. He brought Copperbottom horses with him from Hill County and many others did the same, I do know they were not pacers, and had beautiful heads, good withers, short sloping pasterns and heavily muscled and could run. RLU” C. C. Burgess reinforces this history as he related the following information from family history, “Mr. Herring first started running cattle in the Indian Territory and it has been passed down by family that the Indians really liked his horses as they were really fast and athletic.” Golden Chief was reportedly a direct sire line descendant of Copperbottom. It was believed that he was born in 1918. He is listed in the AQHA Stud Book with his breeder unknown and owned at the time of registration by Underwood. Underwood told Denhardt that he regretted not questioning Herring to get more information on Golden Chief. The letters that Underwood wrote to Michaelis indicate that the verification of the ties between Golden Chief and Copperbottom were an important project for this horse breeder. One letter indicates that the sire of Golden Chief was a stallion known as “The Yellow Stud.” But this letter indicates that The Yellow Stud was also known as a stallion named Buck. This information came from a friend of Underwood’s mother. Buck was described in the letter as “a sorrel Continued on page 48

Am also told that he was very heavily muscled and a great breeder. This is information I believe to be correct.” Michaelis later reports in THE QUARTER HORSE BREEDER, a book by M. H. Lindeman that the Yellow Stud was sired by Buck. She wrote it this way, “Golden Chief’s sire was The Yellow Stud by Buck, a direct descendant of Copperbottom. It is believed that Buck was by Rocket (1879) by Rock by Copperbottom.” Invariably every source of information on this bloodline indicates that Buck was the sire of The Yellow Stud and that Buck traced to Copperbottom through Rocket and Rock. This leads to speculation that Underwood’s letter to Michaelis on May 15, 1942 may have been a typo or an error of some kind. This letter also indicates that Underwood had apparently been sick and unable to “ride his horses” and this could explain the potential for an error. The dam of Golden Chief was listed as “an unnamed range mare of Copperbottom breeding.” Underwood held Golden Chief in high esteem. He was “a copper colored (red dun) quarter horse stallion with a red mane and tail and a brown stripe down his back.” This is a direct quote from the registration application that was filled out by Underwood. He added this in a note on the application, “This great old quarter horse stallion’s foals speak for themselves. He needs no other recommendations. He sired 340 foals on open range and is a well known breeder of good fast cow horses with plenty of speed and action.”

Underwood had set out to develop his family of Copperbottom bred horses through Golden Chief. He also introduced good mares to his breeding program. These mares carried the blood of stallions like Peter McCue and Old Joe Bailey. Another set of mares that were used with Golden Chief were the Zurick Mares. Underwood then started inbreeding and linebreeding to Golden Chief to perpetuate the blood of Copperbottom. The relationship, both personal and business wise, between C. T. Herring and R. L. Underwood is a well-documented part of quarter horse history. But there is another friendship that isn’t as visible to us today as the Underwood Herring friendship. This is a friendship between L. K. Johnson and Underwood. When Herring died in 1931, L. K. Johnson was named President of the Herring National Bank. Three years later Johnson was severely injured in a car wreck and was paralyzed for the rest of his life. Johnson was confined to his bed most of the time in Wichita Falls, Texas. This is where he developed his friendship with R. L. Underwood, who was from Wichita Falls. Johnson would continue in his capacity as the President of the Bank and in the management of the Ranches and on rare occasions he was taken to the ranch. But eventually he was unable to continue in this capacity and his wife Jessie took over the operation of the ranch. Golden Chief reportedly sired over 300 foals but one of the most important horses in the Underwood program was Dexter. Dexter was bred by L. K. Johnson and foaled in 1936 on the Y Ranch.

Burgess reported that Johnson sold a number of horses to Underwood. Dexter and a mare named Little Mother appear to be two of them. Dexter was registered in the AQHA in November 1940. He was shown to be a blood bay stallion that was branded with a “6” on the left shoulder and a “Y” on the left thigh. The registration application indicates that Johnson was the owner of the mare Miss Tommie and that Underwood was the owner of Golden Chief. The registration application of Golden Chief was filled out the same time they did Dexter’s application. This indicates that Underwood was the owner of record when Dexter was registered in the AQHA and was probably the owner of Golden Chief prior to 1935 when Miss Tommie was bred to Golden Chief.

branded on the left thigh and with a triangle ranch brand on the left jaw.

Dexter would sire a number of good show horses and key individuals in the Underwood breeding program. Buddy Dexter was probably the most famous of his foals. Buddy Dexter was an outstanding show horse and was one of the few stallions to beat the great Poco Bueno at halter. He was a Grand Champion at shows in Fort Worth, Texas, Breckenridge, Texas, San Antonio, Texas and Stamford, Texas. The ROM show horses sired by Dexter include Romeo Dexter, Red Bubbles and Chick Dexter.

The first horse registered in the AQHA by the Y Ranch was Lucky Jim in 1944. Lucky Jim was sired by Redwood and out of Little Mother by Tom (Scooter). It has to be noted that Lucky Jim sired only 27 registered foals in the AQHA. He was the sire of several good mares that have made a contribution to the quarter horse including Pretty Lass bred by Jessie Herring Johnson.

The Y Ranch is located at Paducah, Texas and is a neighboring ranch of the famous Triangle Ranch of Paducah. The Triangle Ranch was a part of the ranching empire developed by Tom L. Burnett, the son of S. B. “Burk” Burnett. S. B. “Burk” Burnett was the founder of the famous 6666’s Ranch at Guthrie, Texas. It was Tom Burnett that bought Tom (Scooter) as a breeding horse for the Triangle Ranch and then the Four Sixes Ranch. The Triangle Ranch was the breeder of Miss Tommie. Underwood purchased a mare that was originally known as the “Y” Ranch Quarter Mare and then later registered as Little Mother. She was listed as bred by the Tom L. Burnett Cattle Company. She was sired by Tom (Scooter) and out of a Triangle Mare. Underwood reported on her registration application that she was a full sister to Miss Tommie the dam of Dexter. Little Mother was “Y”

The AQHA Stud Book indicates that Little Mother produced foals for both Underwood and the “Y” Ranch. She is the dam of Lucky Jim and Red Peggy for L. K. Johnson. Red Peggy was sired by Redwood and out of Little Mother by Tom (Scooter). She was branded 8 on the left shoulder and “Y” on the left hip. It is noted on Red Peggy’s pedigree by Underwood that “This little red sorrel mare is one of the nicest calf roping mares I have ever seen work; she is a ‘natural.”

Pretty Lass was the dam of Aledo Rita Bar. This mare has earned 3,157.5 AQHA points. She is AQHA Superior in Youth Halter,Youth Western Horsemanship,Youth Reining,Youth Western Pleasure, Open Halter and Open Western Pleasure. She has seven AQHA Youth High Point Awards in All Around, Showmanship, Western Pleasure, Halter Mare, Reining and a second one in Western Pleasure. She is an Open AQHA Champion,Youth AQHA Champion and an AQHA Youth Performance Champion. Lucky Jim was the sire of Sugar Townley. She in turn was the dam of Sugar Badger, dam of Peppy San Badger. Peppy San Badger was the 1973 NCHA Open Futurity Champion, 1974 NCHA Open Derby Champion and an NCHA Hall of Fame member. He became an all time leading sire of such noted horses as Little Tenina, an NCHA Open Futurity and NCHA Open Derby Champion. Sugar Townley was the dam of Bar’s Choice, an AQHA Champion and Superior Halter Horse and Aledo Bar Ben, AQHA Champion and Superior Western Pleasure Horse. Both sired by Aledo Bar. Lucky Jim sired Bevers’ Lassie. This mare was the dam of Bever’s Patsy, an AQHA Superior Cutting Horse. Bever’s Patsy was the dam of Cutter’s Bever, an NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Reserve Champion. Cutter’s Bever was sired by Cutter Bill, who was linebred to Golden Chief with a 3 X 4 X 3 breeding pattern and multiple crosses to the Tom (Scooter) mares Miss Tommie and a Y Ranch Quarter Mare. Gold Rush was the sire of Bever’s Patsy. Gold Rush stood many years on the Triangle Ranch where he sired Hollywood Gold. He was bought by the “Y” Ranch in the mid 1950’s. He also sired the famous cutting mare Jill’s Lady while owned by the “Y” Ranch.

Royal Hank was out of Dewdrop by Lucky Jim. This horse was the winner of $97,159 in the NCHA. He won the NCHA Non-Pro finals twice. He was third in the 1971 NCHA Open Top Ten. He was a Superior Cutting Horse with 131 AQHA points in the open and 18 in the youth division. Redwood is an interesting individual. He was bred by Joe Dyches of San Angelo, Texas. His sire was Madway, a thoroughbred. His dam was Miss Anson by Harmon Baker by Peter McCue. He was foaled in 1932. R. L. Underwood was his owner at registration time but he was branded “Y” on the left thigh. He was registered in November of 1940. The mare Star Light was born in 1936. This mare was sired by Golden Chief and out of a “Y” Ranch Quarter Mare by Tom (Scooter). I have always speculated that Star Light could be another Little Mother foal although she is not on Little Mother’s produce list in the AQHA records. Star Light is listed as bred by R. L. Underwood. She was registered in November of 1940. It has to be noted that the “Y” Ranch Quarter Mare was not registered as Little Mother until 1945. Author’s Note explaining a similar situation: The AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Sugar Bars was out of Frontera Sugar. This mare was out of a mare we call the Dun Mare. This Dun Mare was later registered as Palomino D O. Pete Reynolds’ research on this has shown that Palomino D O was the dam of Frontera Sugar. But this was never corrected and thus we still say that Frontera Sugar was out of the Dun Mare. So as you can see this has happened over the years. This situation happened because Frontera Sugar was registered before Palomino D O just as Star Light was registered before Little Mother. Star Light was the dam of Billie Silvertone. Billie Silvertone was the Grand Champion Mare at the 1945 Fort Worth Fat Stock Show. She is also the dam of the great Cutter Bill and Smutty Bill.

problem is that we don’t know who borrowed him for that year and what year it actually was. Tom (Scooter) lived out his life on the Four Sixes where he died in 1937. His last colt crop came in 1938. When we look at the pedigree on the registration application of Star Light we see that she was out of a “Y” Ranch Quarter Mare by Tom (Scooter), who was out of a Triangle Mare. This would lead us to believe that this “Y” Ranch Quarter Mare could have been born in 1929 or 1930 on the Triangle Ranch while Tom (Scooter) was standing there. The Triangle Ranch was the neighbor ranch of the Y Ranch as they shared fence line.

Golden wa s sired by Ranch QuaGolden Chief and ou rter Mares t of one of the “Y” by Tom (Sco Photo Cou oter). rtesy The A QHA Hall of Fame an d Museum .

It always seems that we can get conflicting information as we delve into the history of these horses. One of those conflicts could come with possibility of Star Light being out of Little Mother. Little Mother was reportedly born in 1933. Star Light was listed as born in 1936. This would tell us that if Little Mother produced Star Light, she did it as a three year old. The idea that Little Mother could possibly be born earlier than 1933 is reinforced by the fact that Tom (Scooter) was bought by Tom Burnett in about 1927 or 1928. Tom (Scooter) first stood on the Triangle Ranches with his first colts coming in 1929. His first breeding season on the Triangle would probably be 1928 based on when his first colts arrived. Tom (Scooter) was sent to the 6666’s Ranch in about 1930 but his first 6666’s colts didn’t come until 1932. He was then loaned out or borrowed by a “neighbor.” This was in about 1933. I say “about 1933” because Tom (Scooter) sired foals born in 1934 on the Four Sixes so he would have had to be standing at the 6666’s in 1933. This series of events indicates that Tom (Scooter) could have been loaned out in 1932. Our

Two foals out of a “Y” Ranch Quarter Mare by Tom (Scooter) that fit into this situation are Stranger and Golden. Both by Golden Chief. Stranger was born in 1934 and Golden was born in 1935. Golden was bred by Underwood. Her registration application indicates that her dam was a “Y” Ranch Quarter Mare by Tom (Scooter). No other description is given on these papers. Golden was one of those registered by Underwood in November 1940. A note on the registration application for Stranger written by Underwood tells us the following, “Stranger was sold to Mr. Joe S. Bridwell of Wichita Falls, Texas in February before he was 2 years old. Mr. Bridwell used him until two weeks ago and sold him to Mr. Walter Boothe, Sweetwater, Texas.” The registration application for Stranger was being processed in January 1943 and was signed by Mr. Boothe. The registration application for Stranger tells us that he was out of a “Y” Ranch “Brown” Quarter Mare by Tom (Scooter). The registration application tells us that his breeder was the “Y” Ranch owned by L. K. Johnson of Vernon, Texas. A note on the pedigree of this application says the following about Stranger’s dam, “She was only halter broke, never named, but an outstanding quarter broodmare.” Stranger was branded with a “4” on the left jaw and a “Y” on the thigh. Continued from page 56

Now that we have seen some of the history of the Y Ranch, the Tom (Scooter) mares and Golden Chief, let’s jump forward to today. I have always had a dream to use the Copperbottom blood of Golden Chief in my own breeding program. This dream was all based on my association with Smutty Bill. The popularity of Cutter Bill and the early death of Smutty Bill in 1966 indicated that my dream would probably have to come true through Cutter Bill. A few years ago, I got a mare that was a granddaughter of Cutter Bill, but my dream came true when Harold Goatcher called me about his new colt. I had met Harold through a mutual friend the late Bill Fletcher. Harold had been having records A H Q A l some health problems and wanted to know if I fficia arly age. Ooney winner. e n a t a was interested in this colt and I said I was but h Ranc HA m left the Y as an NC . m u se u Stranger indicate that he w I probably couldn’t afford him. Harold didn’t e and M all of Fam H A H want any money. He wanted to give me the colt. Q The A Courtesy to o h p This was in 2002. This was an offer I couldn’t refuse. is Th The interesting part Harold and his family suggested that I name the 2002 colt of all this is that we see that the “Y” Ranch could Triple Cutter Bill. He was sired by Cutter’s Blake Junior by have had as many as four or five daughters (or more) of Tom Cutter’s Blake by Cutter Bill. The dam of Cutter’s Blake Junior (Scooter) in their breeding program during this time. They was Royal Cutters Lady, who was out of Cutter’s Sunburst would include Miss Tommie, (dam of Dexter); “Y” Ranch by Cutter Bill. The dam of Triple Cutter Bill was Nickis Angel, Brown Quarter Mare, (dam of Stranger); “Y” Ranch Quarter who was out of Cutter’s Sweetie by Cutter Bill. This gives Mare, (dam of Star Light): “Y” Ranch Quarter Mare, (dam of Golden) and Little Mother, (dam of Red Peggy and Lucky Jim). Triple Cutter Bill a breeding pattern of 3 X 4 X 3 to Cutter Bill. Cutter Bill has a breeding pattern of 3 X 4 X 3 to Golden This is significant because of the nick of Golden Chief and Chief. the Tom (Scooter) mares and this nicks influence on Cutter Triple Cutter Bill was a dream comes true. He was a smart Bill. Cutter Bill was sired by Buddy Dexter by Dexter. The dam of Buddy Dexter was Little March by Dexter. This makes colt that had the beauty of a palomino and the blood of the Copperbottom in his veins. I sent Triple to Robert Bench at Buddy Dexter 1 X 2 inbred to Dexter. Dexter was sired Mansfield, Arkansas for 120 days of riding and didn’t breed by Golden Chief and out of Miss Tommie by Tom (Scooter). him at age two. I bred four mares to him as a three year old Cutter Bill was out of Billie Silvertone, who was out of Star and got his first colts in 2006. I got three foals with one of Light by Golden Chief and out of a “Y” Ranch Quarter Mare the new foals dying before she was weaned. by Tom (Scooter). So Cutter Bill was not only linebred to Golden Chief, he was linebred to the Golden Chief /Tom Then before I could get any mares bred back to Triple, I (Scooter) mare cross. was given another offer that I couldn’t refuse in that dream to perpetuate the blood of the Copperbottom stallion Golden The Y Ranch had a lot of mares that were identified Chief. The offer came in the form of a phone call from Jim as only “Y Ranch mares” during the registration process. Scudday, the manager of the Burgess-Herring Ranch of The breeding on these mares was unknown. Underwood Stinnett, Texas. They wanted to breed some mares explained it this way on the registration papers of Yaqui, a to Triple Cutter Bill and that is where part two of daughter of Golden Chief, “The “Y” Ranch is one of the old our story will continue. Herring Ranches. They bred many fine quarter horses, but no book records were kept on their breeding.” When bred to Golden Chief these “Y” Ranch mares foaled Little Sister,Yaqui, Big Sister B, Bridwell’s Blondie B, Bridwell’s Mae West, Ginger Rogers B, Chief’s Baldy Girl, Bridwell’s Daisy, Bridwell’s Trixie B and Little Yaqui. With the exception of Little Sister and Bridwell’s Daisy the AQHA Studbook says all of these horses were bred by the Y Ranch. They were born between 1933 and 1935. Several of these mares were used by such breeders as J. S. Bridwell and R. A. Brown. Bridwell’s Trixie B produced the NCHA money winner Jay’s Lady. Little Sister produced Bucky Silvertone, an ROM racehorse. Page 60

Bubba Roan Cowboy is a blue roan stallion that we purchased in 2001. He is very well broke and is a top heading horse that has been hauled to numerous ropings. “Cowboy” is a grandson of Snippy’s Cowboy who goes back to Two Eyed Jack and Orphan Drift. He also carries the bloodlines of Jimmy Mac Bee and Blondy’s Dude. “Cowboy” is an athlete with a great disposition which is passed on to his offspring along with good bone, foot, size and a large percentage of roan color. Pasture bred since we got him. Call or email for more information. SNIPPY COWBOY BEE LOWA COWBOY

The Son Of A Buck is an attractive buckskin stallion that stands 16 hands and is a keen mover. He was purchased by Mr. Bartlett in 2005 and has stood at “Woody’s” Wyoming Ranch for the past two years. He is a 70% color producer of that popular buckskin color. We have started and are riding the 2006 and 2007 foals. Like their sire, they are mellow, easy to get a long with and are big, upstanding youngsters. The Son Of A Buck has been pasture bred since we bought him. We run him with our geldings when we are not breeding him. He is easy to have around. Call or email for more information. Come Ride a “Mechanical Cutting Horse” and See How Innovation Has Come to this Premier Western Horse Sport This One-Of-A-Kind Ride Gives Fans The Feel Of Riding A Real Cutting Horse – The Royalty Of Equine Athletes December 2, 2009 The “Old West” meets “Modern Technology” during the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) World Championship Futurity currently underway at the Will Rogers Equestrian Center in Fort Worth, as horse lovers can come and experience the thrill of riding the new “mechanical cutting horse” located in the Amon Carter Exhibit Hall. Rides on the ingenious new mechanical cutting horse are free of charge, as is parking and admission to the NCHA “Western Mercantile” shopping extravaganza open daily from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. through Dec. 13th. Thanks to “cowboy inventor” entrepreneur Lannie Ashley of Marshall, Texas, visitors to the Coors Light Western Mercantile during the Borden Milk/NCHA Futurity can give cutting a try before they take the plunge into horse ownership.

Ashley, was a finalist numerous times in NCHA Triple Crown events in the 1980s, and has since used his cutting horse savvy to develop a popular mechanical cow used for training cutting horses. Now he’s gone one better with a mechanical horse and cow system that simulates the cutting experience for newcomers. “Everyone who has ridden this mechanical cutting horse has told me that you can’t tell the difference between it and a real horse,” said Ashley. “One international visitor even mentioned that she would like to own one to practice on in between shows.” The machine has multiple speeds and can entertain all levels of riders ranging from those who have never ridden a horse to even professional cutting horse trainers. “This is a fantastic new attraction for horse lovers of all ages and skill levels,” noted NCHA Executive Director Jeff Hooper. “It’s the closest thing to riding a real cutting horse that has ever been invented. It’s educational, and a big thrill!” The mechanical duo is located near the Cutters’ Café at the Southwest corner of the Western Mercantile that is open 9 am to 6 pm daily with extended hours on semi-finals and finals nights through Sunday, December 13. For more information about the Lannie Ashley Mechanical Cow or the many events held in conjunction with the Borden Milk/NCHA Futurity, please visit www.nchacutting.com or call (817) 244-6188. Industry Experts and Audience Votes to Determine 2010 World Champion of Colt-Starting Always pushing the envelope and wowing the industry with her groundbreaking ideas, Road to the Horse Producer Tootie Bland has done it again by pioneering an entirely new concept in the selection of the 2010 Road to the Horse World Champion of Colt-Starting. Spectators at the March 6-7, 2010 event in Murfreesboro, TN will be pulled into the action by voting for the competitor they believe has best earned the title of Road to the Horse Champion. These spectator votes will be combined with the expert opinions of the official Road to the Horse judges to determine the 2010 Champion. Like judging any top level competition, many elements must be considered in the determination of the next champion. Included in the 2010 Souvenir Program will be a break-down of judged elements for each segment of the competition so that spectators can join in on the excitement of choosing the next heir to the Road to the Horse throne. Selected due to their experience and expertise in the equine industry, five official judges will score competitors Richard Winters, Craig Cameron and Ken McNabb during the two days of competition. Returning to the arena floor, Bob Moorhouse, Jack Brainard, Toni Warvell and Marian Buehler will judge along-side Road to the Horse newcomer Eitan Beth-Halachmy. Each of the official judges lends a unique perspective the evaluation of the competition thanks to their divergent experience in the ranch horse, rodeo, reining, natural horsemanship, cutting, reined cowhorse, dressage, show jumping and western pleasure facets of the horse industry. “What sets Road to the Horse apart is not only the quality of our competitors, colts and judges, but the education level of our audience. While industry leaders grace the arena floor as our official judges, sitting in our stands we have horsemen and women with hundreds of thousands of years of horse experience combined. It is only natural that we tap into that great resource and at the same time give our audience the respect they are due in being a part of the excitement of choosing the next champion! The competitor that wins the 2010 event will not only be winning the title, prestige and honor of being the 2010 World Champion of Colt-Starting, but will also be validated by the opinion of 6,000 horseowners!” says Tootie Bland, owner and producer of Road to the Horse. Tickets to the event are selling fast! To secure your spot as an audience judge visit www.roadtothehorse.com or call 877-772-5425 to purchase your tickets. Ticket prices start at just $58 per person and make a great holiday gift idea.

Road to the Horse

Road to the Horse, the World Championship of Colt-Starting is unlike any other event in the equine or entertainment

industry. The two-day sold out event matches three of the country's best horse trainers and clinicians of today against one another as they train unbroken colts to ride in just a few short hours in front of a packed live audience and television cameras. By combining education, edge-of-your-seat suspense, entertainment and the love of the horse, Road to the Horse has been responsible for solidifying the position of today’s horsemanship heroes and launching the careers of tomorrow’s hottest new stars. In the process, the event itself has become a catalyst for the advancement of natural horsemanship. Hosted by Rick Lamb, of RFD-TV’s The Horse Show with Rick Lamb, spectators are guaranteed not only to have a good time, but also to walk away with training knowledge that will improve their relationship with horses. Road to the Horse is proud to partner with many outstanding companies across the equine industry including Road to the Horse presenting sponsor, Western Horseman and strategic partner AQHA along with Nutrena, Quarter Horse News, Cinch/Cruel Girl, Horses Magazine, Martin Saddlery, Wahl Clipper, Gist Silversmiths, John's Ariat Country, Rockin' J Horse Stalls, CSI Saddlepads, Horsecity.com, Extreme Mustang Makeover, WW Livestock, Wick Buildings, Hoofbeats Magazine, Horse South Magazine, Salt Block Gazette and Horsemen's Roundup. For sponsorship opportunities and more information on the 2010 Road to the Horse visit www.roadtothehorse.com or call 325-736-5000. Page 96

Fred Graham Gist passed away unexpectedly at his ranch home on November 23, 2009. Graveside services were held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 25, at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland, Texas. He was born in Colorado City, Texas, on April 20, 1936, to Velma Graham and Fred Morgan Gist. His childhood was spent in the oil patch of the Permian Basin and on holidays at the family farm near Colorado City. He graduated from Midland High School in 1954 and in 1959 from the School of Petroleum Geology at Texas TechUniversity where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Fred served a term in the army and was stationed at Fort Ord, California and Fort Belvoir, Virginia where he was a Specialist Fifth Class and assistant instructor in the Corp of Engineers School. He was a geologist for Tenneco in Colorado and Oklahoma and later for Barron Kidd in Kentucky before becoming an independent geologist in Midland. Fred was involved in ranching with his late parents and late brother, James Edward Gist, in Mora and Chavez Counties, New Mexico from 1959 until 2003. In Midland he married the former Elaine Conger Wood in 1971, and together they raised her two daughters by a previous marriage, Kimberly and Katherine, and a son, John Christopher Gist, who was born to them in 1972 in Midland. With a life-long interest in agriculture and livestock, Fred and his wife raised registered Quarter Horses and Beefmaster Cattle on ranches at Goldsmith and in Burnet and Lampasas Counties, Texas. He was baptized in water in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins as an adult, according to Acts 2:38. In 2003 Fred and his wife moved from Midland to their ranch near Lampasas, Texas. Fred is survived by his wife, Elaine Conger Gist, and daughters, Kimberly Conger Skinner and husband, David, and Katherine Elise Magee and husband, Ken, of Jacksonville, Florida. Fred is also survived by his son, John Christopher Gist, of Lampasas Texas. Grandchildren surviving Fred include Ashley Elaine Hassel, Davis, Amy Katherine, Hampton and Reese Skinner and Maude and Blakeney Magee all of Jacksonville, Florida. He is also survived by Peggy Gist, the widow of his late brother James, and nieces Cindy Davis and Melinda Erramouspe and two grandnieces and two grandnephews. Memorials may be directed to Texas Arms of Love, Post Office Box 5137, Midland, Texas 79704. Visit www. gisthorses.com to learn about Fred Gist's Foundation Quarter Horse legacy - "Good looking Using Horses with a Walking Stick on the Left Thigh".

"The horse. Here is nobility without conceit, friendship without envy, beauty without vanity. A willing servant, yet never a slave." Ronald Duncan
