She won 17 Grand Champions and one reserve.” This is quite a compliment as Matlock Rose has ridden many of the industries great performance horses including the The long-standing phrase and philosophy in the great reining mare Martha King. Martha King was the 1958 quarter horse industry has been that “Great Sires Have Great AQHA High Point Reining Mare. She was a daughter of King Mothers.” One of the greatest examples of this statement comes from the stallion Gay Bar King. This great son of Three P-234. oo eat br ime gr

Bars was out of the good mare Gay Widow. Gay Bar King had a modest race and show record that transferred into an outstanding sire record. Then his record as a broodmare sire reinforced his outstanding sire record. So let’s look at why Gay Widow has done her part to reinforce the old adage that “great sires have great mothers” becoming one of our mares with more. Gay Widow was foaled in 1950. She was bred by the AQHA Hall of Fame breeder Jess L. Hankins of Rocksprings, Texas. Gay Widow was purchased and owned by Julia Reed Russell and trained by Matlock Rose. Matlock Rose told Jane Pattie in the February 1968 QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL story “Matlock Rose” that Gay Page 20
I visited with Matlock Rose about Gay Widow in 1988. He showed a great deal of admiration for Gay Widow, a mare he simply labeled as “one nice mare.” He went on to tell the following about this great mare, “She was the kind of mare that you could put twine around her nose and show her,” Rose went on to describe Gay Widow as a “pretty mare” that was a “standout halter mare with class that could compete with the modern day horse.” He found himself winning at reining and halter with this great mare. She became an AQHA Champion and a Superior Halter Horse with a performance Register Of Merit. She earned 105 halter points, 15 reining points and 1 western riding point. She earned 7 Grand Champion Halter awards at shows like Dallas, Texas. THE WORKING HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2010
Gay Widow-- The Dam of Gay Bar King
The pedigree of this great mare shows that she was a King P-234 and King Ranch cross that has worked so well over the years. Her sire of course was King P-234, an AQHA Hall of Fame member. King P-234 is still the second leading maternal grandsire sire of AQHA Champions with 50. He is the sire of 84 ROM performance horses and 20 AQHA Champions.
BY: LARRY THORNTON Brown Nixon Mare. She was by Nixon’s Joe Bailey. Her dam was the Nixon Mare by a son of Anthony. Happy Gal was the dam of Drifting Sand, an ROM racehorse that was sired by Joe Ell. King Rumba with two AQHA Halter points was a full brother to Gay Widow. King’s Uncle Hap was a full brother as well. He earned three AQHA halter points.
Traveler Little Joe Jenny
King P-234 was sired by Zantanon by Little Joe. Little Joe was sired by Traveler, who was of unknown breeding. Jenny was the dam of Little Joe. She was sired by Sykes Rondo. Her dam was May Mangum by Anthony by Old Billy. Jeanette was the dam of Zantanon. She was sired by Billy, not to be confused with the foundation sire Old Billy. This Billy was sired by Big Jim and out of McFadden. Some pedigree authorities report that Big Jim was sired by Sykes Rondo. The dam of Jeanette was by Sykes Rondo, making Zantanon 3 x 4 x 3 linebred to Sykes Rondo.
Zantanon Billy by Big Jim Jeanette Mare by Sykes Rondo King P-234 Yellow Jacket Strait Horse
Jabalina, the dam of King, was a daughter of Strait Horse, a son of Yellow Jacket. Yellow Jacket was by Little Rondo by Lock’s Rondo and out of Barbee Dun by Lock’s Rondo. Yellow Jacket is 2 X 2 inbred to Lock’s Rondo. The dam of Gay Widow was Happy Gal by a horse named Graves Peeler. Graves Peeler, the man was a Texas Ranger and Brand Inspector for the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. It was Peeler and the famous author J. Frank Dobie that were given the task of putting together the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Preserve Herd of Longhorns. This was the start of the effort to preserve the Longhorn breed of cattle as we know it today. The horse Graves Peeler was a son of Macanudo. Macanudo was sired by Old Sorrel and out of Canales Belle. The dam of Graves Peeler was the mare Petra R2, a daughter of Little Richard by Old Sorrel. This makes Graves Peeler a full brother to Pep-Up, the broodmare sire of the World Champion Cutting Horses Peppy San and Mr San Peppy. The female family of Happy Gal returns us to the Traveler and Old Billy families. The dam of Happy Gal was Little Gal. Little Gal was sired by Joe Bailey P-4 and out of a mare by Sykes Rondo. Joe Bailey P-4 was sired by Little King, a son of Possum. Possum was a full brother of Little Joe. Both were sired by Traveler and out of Jenny. Little Joe was the grandsire of King P-234.

Continued from page 21... Indian Baby was a full sister to Gay Widow. This mare was unshown but she was a producer with foals like Long Beard. Long Beard by Band Man was an AQHA Superior Halter Horse with 80 open halter points and two open performance points. Happy Pigeon was a three quarter sister to Gay Widow being sired by Zantanon H by King P-234. Happy Pigeon was the dam of Pigeon Girl. She was by King Breeze by King P-234. Pigeon Girl was the dam of Dudes Last King, an ROM show horse and World Show qualifier in team penning.
From 1964 to 1967, Gay Widow produced four foals by Otoe. Only two were performers, Otoe’s Gay Widow and Gay Wardancer. Otoe’s Gay Widow was the dam of Cream of Tee with five AQHA halter points. Her other point earner was Fire and Flame with 16 AQHA halter points. Gay Wardancer was a point earner with nine AQHA working points. Otoe’s Cherie was an unshown daughter of Gay Widow and Otoe. She was the dam of four point/money earners. They include Primo Peppy, ($32,057.06 in the NCHA); Lynx Joy, ($23,475.10 in the NCHA); Lynx Nomad, ($7,725.37 in the NCHA) and Oaks Classic, ($16,480.63 in the NCHA).
It was Matlock Rose that suggested to Julia Reed Russell that Gay Widow be bred to Three Bars. The result of that mating was Gay Bar King, who was foaled in 1958. Gay Bar King went to the track to earn an A rating with one win in four starts. In the arena he collected 13 halter points with three Grand Championships and one Reserve Grand Championship. He also earned six cutting points and an ROM in 1967.
Cherlena was an unshown daughter of Otoe’s Cherie. Cherlena is the dam of five NCHA/NRCHA money earners. The leading money earner was Gunnalena, winner of $62,323.00 in the NRCHA. Gay Red Baron was Gay Widow’s 1970 foal by Bar The Door. This gelding has no show record. A mating with Doc Bar resulted in Koshari, who has no record as a performer.
Gay Widow was the dam of nine other foals from matings with six other stallions. Her 1961 foal, Lone Star Concho by Poco Stampede, has no show record with the AQHA or NCHA. In 1962 she foaled Little Red Cloud by Joe Blair, also with no show record.

Continued from page 24... Tejana Bar was the dam of Tejana Sugar with $12,891 in NCHA earnings. Tejana Sugar was the dam of Tajanas Finale, who earned $11,202.30 in the NCHA. The key to Gay Widow’s lasting influence on the breed comes from Gay Bar King. James Springer bought Gay Bar King in January of 1967 from George Tyler and Matlock Rose. Tyler and Rose had just purchased Gay Bar King from Russell, when they sold the horse to Springer. Springer turned Gay Bar King over to Doc Spence to train. Spence took over the reins from Bubba Casio. Doc Spence called me one time and explained why Gay Bar King’s show ring experience was limited. He earned his six cutting points at a show in Brenham, Texas. The judge was B. F. Yates and he placed Gay Bar King in a first place tie with the great cutting horse Cross Timber. Shortly after this show, Gay Bar King was diagnosed with a navicular problem and he was retired.

His foals include The Hot Express, a two time AQHA High Point All-Around Stallion and Lil Hot Express, an AQHA High Point Reining Horse. He is also the sire of Sparkin Express, an NRHA Futurity Finalist. Sparkin Express is out of the great mare Diamonds Sparkle. Zan Parr Express was sired by Zan Parr Bar and out of Gay Bar Moon by Gay Bar King. Randados Rosa was a daughter of Gay Bar Annie by Gay Bar King. This unshown mare was the dam of Impulsions, the 1989 AQHA World Champion in the Two-Year-Old Snaffle Bit Futurity at the AQHA World Show. This good stallion has gone on to be a World Champion sire with foals like A Sudden Impulse, 1994 AQHA World Champion Junior Western Pleasure Horse; Hot Impulse, 2001 AQHA World Champion Junior Western Riding Horse and Impulsed By Gold, 2000 AQHYA World Champion Western Pleasure Horse and 1997 AQHA World Champion Junior Western Pleasure Champion. Impulsed by Gold has Superiors in Open, Amateur and Youth Western Pleasure. She was a 1999 and 2001 AQHA High Point Western Pleasure Mare. Here is another version of the influence of Gay Widow and it comes through a grandson of hers named Mr Bar Gold. This AQHA Champion son of Gay Bar King is Superior in halter and Superior in cutting. He was the 1966 AQHA High Point Junior Cutting Horse. He is best known as the sire of the AQHA High Point Halter Horse Gold Margarita.
It is obvious that the power of a mare is often best served through her sons. Della Moore was one of those mares that had a great influence on the quarter horse. She did it through her sons Joe Moore and Joe Reed P-3. Dollie Pine has proven to be a great source of western pleasure blood in our industry. She did most of her contribution through her son Zippo Pine Bar. So it is obvious that Gay Widow was an influence through her son Gay Bar King and she serves as a great example of “great sires have great mothers.”
She proves her point as the mother of a great stallion like Gay Bar King making her one of our mares with more.

THE
Yellow Jacket
by Larry Thornton
O
One of the intriguing things about raising horses is the anticipation we all feel waiting for the arrival of the new foal. This foal represents our hopes and dreams of producing an outstanding individual for the next generation of quarter horse. One of the areas that will give us the greatest anticipation is the color of the foal. We know certain things about color genetics that tells us what we may expect from a given mating. A simple example would be breeding a sorrel with a Nellie D was a daughter of Blackburn by Yellow Jacket. She was out of a mare by Waggoner’s bay will pretty much give Rainy Day P-13. Waggoner’s Rainy Day was sired by Ben Hur, who was out of Nettie Jacket by us the potential for either Yellow Jacket. Nellie D was the dam of horse like Poco Speedy by Poco Bueno. Poco Bueno was a a sorrel or a bay foal. descendant of Yellow Jacket as well. Thus we basically know what to expect, but still Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum. don’t know what the color of the foal will be The history of Yellow Jacket begins with his becoming the and that is an exciting part of being a breeder. property of O. G. Parke Sr. of Kyle, Texas. Parke was noted as a Another interesting aspect of color comes through the prominent horseman that owned a racetrack on the Blanco addition of a dilution gene. Just because a dilution gene is River near Kyle. Franklin Reynolds in the story “Yellow Jacket, present, it doesn’t guarantee that the foal will be a palomino A Most Wonderful Horse,” (Parts I and II of the May 1959 and or a dun or buckskin. Thus the dilution gene and its effect or June 1959 issues of THE QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL), gives us lack of effect on the foal will add to our anticipation about two versions as to how Parke came to own Yellow Jacket. the color The first version is simply that Parke bought the mare One of the really nice things about the presence of a Barbee Dun and she was in foal and the foal she was carrying dilution gene is that we can trace it through the pedigree was Yellow Jacket. Parke had bought Barbee Dun from Jim to find the source for that gene. This dilution gene ties our Barbee also of Kyle, Texas. The other version indicates that foal directly to that individual and we know that gene has Parke bought both Barbee Dun and Yellow Jacket. This report been passed down generation after generation from that indicates that Yellow Jacket was six months old when Parke individual. This is especially exciting when we find that the bought him. dilution gene came from a great foundation sire or mare. One of the industries most interesting sires is Yellow Jacket. Yellow Jacket was a red dun. He was not only a source of the dun color, but one of the all time great quarter horse foundation sires. His blood runs in the veins of many of today’s great horses no matter their color. Page 42
Reynolds interviewed Jimmy Poindexter, who was a jockey and the person that broke Yellow Jacket about how Parke came to own the horse. Poindexter recalled that Parke bought Barbee Dun in foal with Yellow Jacket. Most authorities show that Yellow Jacket was foaled in 1908. THE WORKING HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2010
Reynolds uses Poindexter to give us a description of this great stallion. He described him as “a nice, quiet young colt. When he got a little older he was like most stud horses, a little stubborn. But he wasn’t ever what you would call really mean or fractious.” Poindexter went on to tell Reynolds that the horse was “about 15 hands, or probably just a little more, and weigh ing, when fat, perhaps as much as 1200 pounds.” He was a “handsome dun with a red mane and tail.” With O. G. Parke Sr. as the owner, it appears to be only natural that Yellow Jacket became a racehorse. Poindexter reported to Reynolds that Yellow Jacket consistently ran the quarter in: 23 or :23:5 as a two year old in training.
Wilmot Bunton (son of Desha Bunton, who at one time owned Little Rondo, the sire of Yellow Jacket) reported that many of those attending the race thought the Jockey had “not tried to win.” This theory was supported by the fact that the jockey left town after the race and was never heard from again. Mr. Miller didn’t dispute the claims by Mr. Bunton. Despite all the controversy, the race went down in history as a loss for Yellow Jacket and a win for Little King. Both went on to be great sires and found families within the quarter horse breed.
Old Billy Whalebone Paisana
No information seems to exist as to the race record of Yellow Jacket, but he was reported to be “open to the world at a quarter mile.” Despite being a successful racehorse, history has focused on a race Yellow Jacket lost. This is the race with King, the full brother of Little Joe. This is the King that eventually went to Arizona and became the famous foundation sire we now know as Possum (King).
The Reynolds story “Yellow Jacket, A Most Wonderful Horse,” (THE QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL May & June 1959) gives a thorough account of the circumstances behind this famous race. The race between Yellow Jacket and Possum (King) took place at Kyle, Texas in 1911. Possum(King) was from Devine, Texas. Reynolds refers to Possum (King) as Little King as he outlines the history of this famous race. Parke’s sons John E. Parke and O. G. Parke Jr set up the race while the elder Parke was away. John E. Parke is reported to be the owner of Yellow Jacket at this point in our story. When Parke returned, he found that Yellow Jacket was matched with Little King. This was a race that Parke felt Yellow Jacket could not win. Despite his misgivings about the race, he supported his sons and their match race with Little King. His support was almost rewarded as Yellow Jacket lost the race by a nose. Reynolds went into the heart of the Kyle/Devine area and was able to visit with several old timers that were around when the race was run. Some of them recounted that those supporting Little King felt confident they would win the race. Many of those in the Yellow Jacket camp believed that the race was not honestly run and that they were cheated. Of course this is a very normal reaction from a community that had lost a lot of money on a horse race. One of those interviewed was Leon Orban Miller of Kyle, Texas. Mr. Miller was the man that would give Reynolds a pedigree for Yellow Jacket’s dam. Mr. Miller felt that Yellow Jacket was not in good enough condition to win the race.

A look at the pedigree of Yellow Jacket gives us an opportunity to see why this great sire may have been able to become a foundation sire. He was inbred to the great stallion Lock’s Rondo. His sire was Little Rondo by Lock’s Rondo and his dam was Barbee Dun by Lock’s Rondo. This makes Yellow Jacket 2X2inbred to Lock’s Rondo. This is the same inbreeding pattern we see in the prepotent sire Leo, who was 2X2inbred to Joe Reed P-3. Little Rondo was known by several names. He was called The Bunton Horse, Bunton’s Rondo and Rondo II. Reynolds’ story on Yellow Jacket tells us that Desha Bunton owned Little Rondo at the time. According to the story, Bunton bought Little Rondo from the brothers Tom and Jim Martin of Kyle, Texas. The Martin’s had bought the horse from his breeder a Mr. Peavy from Bastrop County, Texas. Bunton later sold Little Rondo to Will and Dow Shely of Alfred, Texas. The Shely Brothers were the last owners of Traveler, the sire of Possum(King) and his full brother Little Joe. Lock’s Rondo was chestnut foaled in 1890 and bred by Charles R. Haley of Sweetwater, Texas. His sire was Whalebone by Old Billy by Shiloh. The dam of Whalebone was Paisana by Brown Dick. The dam of Lock’s Rondo was Mittie Stephens by Shiloh Jr by Shiloh. This makes Shiloh Jr Page 46
and Old Billy paternal half brothers as they were both sired by Shiloh. This would also make Lock’s Rondo 3X3 linebred to Shiloh. Mittie Stephens was also the dam of Shelby. Shelby was the sire of Eureka, Pid Hart and Anti-Pro, three prominent sires in the foundation of the quarter horse. Eureka was the sire of Weatherford Joe Bailey or Old Joe Bailey as some refer to him today. The dam of Little Rondo was Minnie Franks by Project. Her dam was a Franks Mare. Minnie Franks was a bay race mare. Minnie Franks is listed by Victoria Short in her book UNREGISTERED FOUNDATION SIRES OF THE AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE as bred by Louis Franks of Kyle, Texas. The pedigree of Barbee Dun, a dun mare, holds some interesting information about the source of Yellow Jacket’s dun color. Franklin Reynolds in the Yellow Jacket story (“Yellow Jacket, A Most Wonderful Horse”) tells us that the dam of Barbee Dun was a Spanish Mare. He tells us that Albert Leath of Hay County, Texas owned this Spanish Mare. Leon Orban Miller was the source of the pedigree information on Barbee Dun that Franklin Reynolds secured for his story. Miller reportedly had the pedigree written down on an envelope that was safely set-aside in his closet. Continued on page 50... THE WORKING HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2010

Continued on page 46... Miller had gotten the information from Mr. Leath, who he said was the owner of the Spanish Mare. Leath told Miller that he had gotten the mare from an itinerant trader and that she came from down around San Antonio and it was possible she came from Mexico. Miller described the Spanish Mare to Reynolds as “a mare of splendid conformation and proven performance capacity; a dun with black stripe across her shoulder and down her back. There were stripes also, ‘around her muscles and her legs.’ She was ‘a beautiful mare with black mane and tail.” Albert Leath bred the Spanish Mare to Lock’s Rondo and got a “yellow filly.” He sold the filly to his brother Boone Leath and he in turn sold the mare to Jim Barbee and she became the Barbee Dun. Many of the old timers referred to a yellow horse or palomino as a “dun.” The Miller’s were very familiar with Barbee Dun as Mrs. Miller rode her to the mailbox to get the mail for several years before Boone Leath sold her to Jim Barbee. Like many of the famous horses we study, Barbee Dun has a couple of different versions for her pedigree. This second version of Barbee Dun’s pedigree shows that the mare Mary Lee is her dam. Bob Denhardt talks about Mary Lee on page 53 of his book FOUNDATION SIRES OF THE AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE. He reports that Mary Lee was a dun mare foaled in 1877. Her sire was Joe Lee by Joe Hamilton by One Eyed Joe sired him. The dam Mary Lee is described as “a dun race mare of questionable breeding.” A letter from W. W. Lock Jr. that was reported in the CATTLEMAN Maga zine in December 1945 gives us some more information on the pedigree of Mary Lee. The material from this letter appeared in an article profiling the great Texas Chief. Texas Chief was a Lock bred stallion by Lock’s Rondo and out of Daisy L. Daisy L was a daughter of Mary Lee. This information indicates that Joe Lee sired Mary Lee. The story also says, “that Mary Lee was a dun out of Old Nellie, another dun.” Lock’s son added in his letter, “My father raced Old Nellie for years.” An added note here indicates that Denhardt may have gotten his information from the W. W. Lock Jr. letter that went to Helen Michaelis and that letter formed the basis for the CATTLEMAN article. This leads us to ask—is the “Dun Spanish Mare” and Mary Lee the same mare? This is a question we will probably never answer. But we do have some interesting information about Mary Lee and the origin of a line of dun mares that were owned by Lock. We saw that the “dun Spanish mare” came to Mr. Leath from an “itinerant trader.” The historical writer Barbara Muse Huntington in her book THE GRAND TWENTY tells of how W. W. Lock Sr. came to own “a band of dun mares.” She tells us that in 1876 a man named Mr. Trimble along with his sons brought from Utah to a place called Ten-Mile Prairie a large herd of horses. Huntington reports that Ten-Mile Prairie was located in Cody County, Texas. (I have not been able to locate this county, as Texas cur rently doesn’t have a Cody County.) As the story goes Mr. Trimble brought 1,000 head of horses into Texas and this herd of horses included “approxi mately 300 golden dappled duns with red manes and tails.” Page 50
Huntington goes on to tell her readers that four years after these mares had arrived some of them were sold. The famous JA Ranch bought 25 of them. Dan Waggoner (Waggoner Ranch of Vernon, Texas) bought be tween 25 and 50 of them and that W. W. Lock bought a “select band of mares to breed to Lock’s Rondo.” Lock bought Lock’s Rondo in 1887. This “band” of mares became the base of what Huntington called “the maternal genesis of the ‘Lock’ golden race string.” Let’s look at some dates on this material. Lock’s Rondo was born in 1880 and bought by W. W. Lock in 1887. Most reports indicate that Mary Lee was foaled in 1877. This is one year after the Trimble herd of horses reportedly came to Texas. Some of those Trimble mares were sold in 1880. Daisy L was foaled in 1882. She was sired by Project. She was bred and owned by Lock. Blue Jacket was foaled in 1888. This is one year after Lock bought his Rondo. Lock was the breeder. Barney was another foal by Lock’s Rondo and out of Mary Lee. He was foaled in 1889. The next foal from this cross is Bonnie Bird. She was foaled in 1890. Then came Minnie Lee, who was born in 1892. Now for Barbee Dun in the scheme of this list of foals sired by Lock’s Rondo and reportedly out of Mary Lee. The year given most as the birth year of Barbee Dun is 1881. Denhardt qualifies this birth year by putting a (?) beside it. The year 1881 makes it very difficult for Lock’s Rondo to be her sire as he was born in 1880. But if we go back and look at the list of foals from above, we find that Lock’s Rondo and Mary Lee didn’t have a foal in 1891. Barbee Dun would fit into that time period. Here is another interesting fact about Barbee Dun and her being the dam of Yellow Jacket. If she was foaled in 1881 and Yellow Jacket was foaled in 1908, then she would have been 27 years old when he was born. If she was foaled in 1891 and Yellow Jacket was born in 1908, then she would have been 17 years old. This is all supported by the fact that Reynolds in his story “Yellow Jacket, A Most Wonderful Horse” told that Barbee Dun foaled several foals after she arrived at the Parke Ranch in addition to Yellow Jacket. Mary Lee was the dam of Barbee Dun, Daisy L, Blue Jacket and Minnie Lee. All of these foals were dun, except Blue Jacket, who is referred to as a grulla. Daisy L was “dun and she had black legs. (Sounds like the Dun Spanish Mare.) Lock’s son W. W. Lock Jr considered Minnie Lee and Blue Jacket the best of the runners. Daisy L, Blue Jacket and Minnie Lee were all raced at one point by Lock. Thus they form “Lock’s golden string of race horses” that Huntington referred to in her book. But there is no mention that Barbee Dun was raced by Lock. By the way Lock had his own brand. The Lock bred horses were branded with an “LO. We will begin the sire record of Yellow Jacket with his son Strait Horse. No definite date for the birth of this stallion is given. Strait Horse was the sire of Jabalina. Jabalina was the dam of King P-234. Of course we are all familiar with King and his famous fam ily. King P-234 was the sire of 20 AQHA Champions and 84 ROM per formers. His foals include Poco Bueno, Royal King, Captain Jess and many many more to numerous to recount in this material. The next horse we will look at is the mare Nettie Jacket. Her dam was Nettie Harrison. Nettie Harrison was sired by Sykes Rondo and out of May Mangum. This makes Nettie Harrison a full sister to Jenny and Baby Ruth. Jenny was the dam of Little Joe and Possum (King) the stallion that outran Yellow Jacket. Baby Ruth was the dam of Paul Ell. Nettie Jacket was the dam of Ben Hur. Ben Hur was sired by Rainy Day by Lone Star. Eugene Schott of Medina, Texas bred him. Schott was to breeder of Nettie Jacket. Ben Hur started in Texas and ended up on the ranch of W. D. “Dink” Parker in Arizona. He was a good racehorse and the sire of such noted horses as Waggoner’s Rainy Day P-13, Ben Hur II and the grandsire of a mare listed in the AQHA Stud Book as the Dun Mare. This Dun Mare was the dam of Frontera Sugar. Frontera Sugar was the dam of Sugar Bars. Some pedigrees will say that Ben Hur sired her dam and some will say a son of Ben Hur. Some authorities believe that the Dun mare in Sugar Bars’ pedigree was later registered, as Palomino D. O. Frontera Sugar was a Palomino show mare. Her son Sugar Bars became a leading sire under the guidance of Bud Warren. He became the all time leading sire of AAA rated AQHA Champions. His influence today is widespread through horses like Jewel’s Leo Bar (Freckles), the foundation sire of the Freckles cutting horse bloodlines. This line of horses features such great cutters as Freckles Playboy, Freckles Hustler, Jay Freckles and Colonel Freckles.
The influence of Waggoner’s Rainy Day P-13 on the Waggoner Ranch is mostly through his daughters. But one son that was bred on the Waggoner Ranch has had a lasting influence. His name was Dan Waggoner. Dan Waggoner left the Waggoner Ranch and ended up as the foundation sire of the famed Wilson Ranch of Vernon, Texas. Waggoner’s Rainy Day sired several arena and race ROM foals, they include Buttons Y, Mayme Van, Rain drop, Rainy Charitt, Rainy Weather and Rainy Boot. Rainy Boot was ROM in arena performance and the rest of these horses were ROM on the racetrack. A couple of his producing daughters were Judy Rainy Day, dam of the AQHA Champion Buddy Day and Ken Ada Frances, dam of the AQHA Champion Fancy Flit Bar. Yellow Jacket went to the Waggoner Ranch to be a breeding stallion in 1916 or 1917. Another of the famous Waggoner Ranch stallions that arrived about the same time was Yellow Wolf. Yellow Wolf was a son of Old Joe Bailey and out of the great mare Old Mary. This makes Yellow Wolf and Yellow Jacket relatives through the great mare Mittie Stephens, who was the dam of Lock’s Rondo and Shelby. Shelby in turn was the sire of Eureka, the sire of Old Joe Bailey.
Waggoner bought Yellow Wolf as a weanling foal. He also bought his dam Old Dan Waggoner was a son of Waggoner’s Rainy Day by Ben Hur. Ben Hur was out of Mary and she Nettie Jacket by Yellow Jacket. Yellow Bear became a sire stallion for a time. At the Burnett Ranch he became the for the Waggoner Ranch alongside Yel low Wolf and Yellow sire of such noted horses as Poker Player. Poker Player had Jacket. a successful show career earning 77.5 AQHA points for his arena ROM. He in turn was the sire of the great Burnett Ranch mare Joanie James. This mare was the dam of horses like Holly Joanie, who was the dam of Cee Bars Joan. Gee Bars Joan was an NCHA Futurity Champion.
Most of the sons of Yellow Jacket were gelded and used as working ranch horses by the Waggoner Ranch. One of his famous sons was the gelding Cowpuncher, the personal mount for W. T. Waggoner. He was a red dun horse.
The Waggoner Ranch bought Ben Hur’s son Waggoner’s Rainy Day P-13. They used this horse for a num ber of years and then he was sold. His last owner was Art Beall of Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
The daughters of Yellow Jacket found their way into the Waggoner broodmare band. They are often listed as mares by Yellow Jacket or Yellow Jacket mares. I am sure some of them are listed as Waggoner Mares as well. One of the Yellow

Jacket mares that was bred to Yellow Wolf foaled a stallion that became known as Beetch’s Yellow Jacket. Some early pedigree researchers listed Beetch’s Yellow Jacket as sired by Yellow Jacket and out of a Yellow Wolf mare. But today, they list Yellow Jacket as the broodmare sire of Beetch’s Yellow Jacket and his sire as Yellow Wolf. Beetch’s Yellow Jacket became a noted sire with two of his daughters carrying the banner for this good stallion. The daughters were the full sisters Dixie Beach and Lady Coolidge. Dixie Beach was the dam of such noted horses as Tom Benear, Bailarina, Little Dixie Beach, M’s Tom Benear II and Harlan. Lady Coolidge was the dam of such noted horses as Bert P-227, J B King, George Clegg, Linda Mujer, Grey Hound, Angle and Shirley Hunt. One of the Yellow Jacket mares from the Waggoner Ranch was Water Lily. Water Lily was bred on the Waggoner Ranch and she found her way to the King Ranch. The King Ranch bred this good mare to Old Sorrel. The most important foal from this cross was Hired Hand. Hired Hand went on to be the stallion that the King Ranch chose to directly replace Old Sorrel. W. T. Waggoner gave Yellow Jacket to Oscar Bivins of Amarillo, Texas in 1924. This move leads to Yellow Jacket breeding five mares owned by Ed Thompson in 1926. These matings resulted in three stallions that have all gone on to make their mark on the quarter horse. They were Cowboy P-12, Yellow Boy P-18 and Blackburn. The AQHA Stud Book shows that three dif ferent people bred these three stallions. But Thompson bred them all. Cowboy P-12 was also known as Cowpuncher and was listed in the AQHA Stud Book as bred by Ed Th ompson. He was widely traveled but ended up in Colorado with Cliff Fahrion of Bayfield. Cowboy P-12 was the sire of Hard Twist, 1946 and 1951 Champion Quarter Running Stallion and suc cessful sire. The next running champion sired by Cowboy P-12 was Shue Fly. This mare has gone down in history as one of the all time great quarter running horses. She was the World Champion Quarter Running Horse in 1941, 1942 and 1943. (We have to note here that some believe that Cow boy P-12 did not sire Shue Fly. But that is another story for another time.) Cowboy P-12 sired the great broodmare Hired Girl. Hired Girl is in turn the dam of Skipper W, Hank Wiescamp’s great breeding stallion. Leche was the dam of Hired Girl. Some pedigrees report that Gold Digger, the dam of Leche was a daughter of Yellow Jacket. This would make Hired Girl 2X3 inbred to Yellow Jacket. Yellow Boy P-18 would be listed in the AQHA Stud Book as bred by Bivins. Bivins sold the horse to the JA Ranch where he was a sire for much of his life. He was later sold and registered with the AQHA by John T. Simms Jr. of Pampa, Texas. Yellow Boy counts among his foals a mare named Johnnie Adair. This mare was the dam of Blondy Queen, who was the dam of Blondy’s Dude. Of course Blondy’s Dude was a very successful halter and performance horse sire as well as a great broodmare sire. His daughters have produced the likes of Reprise Bar, the 1984 AQHA World Show Super Horse. Blondy’s Dude gets a shot of Yellow Jacket through is sire Page 58
as well. His sire was Small Town Dude by King P-234, whose maternal grandsire was Strait Horse by Yellow Jacket. Blackburn was registered as bred by J. L Fuqua Jr. of Amarillo, Texas. Blackburn found his way back to the Waggoner Ranch. He became one the all time great Waggoner sires. His daughters were highly prized by the ranch. He became the broodmare sire of such noted horses as Snipper W, an AQHA Champion and an NCHA World Champion Cutting Horses. Lady Blackburn III was a daughter of Blackburn that was the dam of such noted horses as Poco Bob, an AQHA Champion by Poco Bueno. Poco Bob allows us to focus on the influence of Yellow Jacket on the breed ing program built around Poco Bueno and the Waggoner Ranch mares for the 3D Stock Farm at Arlington, Texas. Poco Bueno was a son of King P-234. King P-234 gets his shot of Yellow Jacket through his dam’s sire Strait Horse. Blackburn was a son of Yellow Jacket. The dam of Lady Blackburn III was a Rainy Day Mare by Waggoner’s Rainy Day P-13, who gets his Yellow Jacket blood through his sire’s dam Nettie Jacket. The dam of the Rainy Day Mare is listed as a Waggoner Mare. Who is to say that this Waggoner Mare was not the product of Yellow Jacket or one of his daughters used in the program? We will probably never know that part of the pedigree, but we do know that horses bred along the lines of Poco Bob were linebred to Yellow Jacket. Poco Bob’s known breeding pattern to Yellow Jacket was 5X3X6. Blackburn as a broodmare sire and another famous Waggoner Ranch stal lion Pretty Boy would team up to pro duce some great broodmares. Leading this list is the famous Sheilwin. Sheilwin was the dam of cutting horse legends Poco Lena and Poco Tivio.
Sadly our look at Yellow Jacket has to come to an end. We have again left out many great individuals that carry the blood of this sire. But now we know the possible origin of the dun color of this famous stallion. Of course we still haven’t answered the question of whether it was a “Spanish Dun Mare” or Mary Lee was his dam or whether they were the same mare. But we do know that the mare that was his dam had to be a pretty good horse.
