CHAROLAIS JUNIOR NATIONAL A Family Affair

My overall impression of the 2023 Charolais Junior National was one of admiration and respect for the “Family Friendly Atmosphere” created by everyone involved in the event. From the AIJCA Board of Directors to Kaitlyn Chism and the Planning Committee, to Reagan Dolan and Peyton Piepho (our summer interns), to the AICA staff, to the judges, parents, and grandparents; the overall atmosphere at this year’s Charolais Junior National was very enjoyable due to the Family Friendly nature of the various competitions. Whether your children were in elementary school, high school, or even in college, the competitions were designed to make every contestant feel welcome and important. The inclusive atmosphere permeated the cattle barns, the wash rack, and the competition rooms where speeches, quiz bowl and cook-offs were held. The spirit of congeniality even reigned in the showring where showmanship, team fitting and cattle shows resulted in friends working together and cheering for one another because making new friends was more important than winning ribbons and awards. What an inspiring way to spend the 4th of July and the next three days at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Special thanks to our hosts from the great states of Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin for making this year’s Charolais Junior National one to remember!

At last year’s Charolais Junior National in Grand Island, I realized how important the daily meals were for creating the family atmosphere I mentioned above. The hospitality committee went above and beyond to be sure we were well fed during our time at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. I was also very impressed with the hard work, dedication, and servant hearts I witnessed in the members of the planning committee. Their attention to detail from stalling to tie outs to planning daily events and the Thursday evening banquet that fed over 600 people,

was impressive at every level!

On Wednesday morning, I headed to the Annex to visit with exhibitors, parents, and grandparents. I didn’t keep track of every person I visited with, but the morning went by quickly and the conversations were priceless. After lunch, Samantha Corn and Brett Spader started interviewing exhibitors of all ages. My job was to go through the barn and send exhibitors and advisors to the FFA Room in the Birthing Center to meet with Samantha and Brett. I started with some of the people I had conversations with, in the Annex earlier in the day. I soon moved over to the Cattle Barn directly across from the showring. I found the people in this building to be just as friendly as the ones in the Annex. I immediately met exhibitors who were willing to be interviewed and who knew where the FFA Room was in the Birthing Center. I spent the majority of Wednesday afternoon visiting with exhibitors, parents and other Charolais enthusiasts.

On Thursday morning, I went directly to the showring to watch the Charolais Bred & Owned Show. Wow was I impressed with the quality of the animals and the showmanship skills of the exhibitors. Both groups were equally good! The judge, Will Coor, was extremely enthusiastic and very complimentary towards the exhibitors and their animals. It was obvious Mr. Coor was enjoying judging the Bred and Owned Show and the exhibitors appeared to enjoy presenting their cattle to him. The championship lineup of Charolais heifers, bulls, steers, and percentage heifers was outstanding. My compliments to the exhibitors for raising and showing such an outstanding group of Charolais and Charolais-Influenced cattle.

Friday morning started at the showring with a wonderful rendition of the National Anthem sung by AIJCA member, Belle Watje from Millsap, TX. The owned heifer show was the focus of the final day of this year’s Charolais Junior National and Ty Bayer from

AICA NEW MEMBERS

American-International CHAROLAIS Association

The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA.

Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.

The deadlines to place advertising in the September 2023 Charolais Journal is August 10. Contact your field representative about these and other advertising opportunities.

Export Your Data for Sale Catalogs

Under the “tools” tab, you will find a new “Data Export” button. This data export gives you the flexibility to export data on animals in your herd and use those data files in your own management packages. You can download and save the files directly to your computer in a CSV (can be opened in Excel) format. There are many options within this feature including selecting the type of animal to export and specific data.

Year letter for 2023 is L

Record your 2023 born calves using AICA’s online system. Add the data as the calves are born; continue to update the records as you add weaning and yearling data. Register the calves at any time by adding their name.

Animals Held in the System

If an animal is registered online and held in the system, you can transfer that animal at any time. If an animal was registered online, but wasn’t held in the system, it will not be able to be transferred online. You will need to fill out the back of the certificate that was mailed to you and send it back to the office to be transferred.

As of January 1, 2023. Samples recieved at the lab after 12-15-22 will reflect the new price.

If an animal needs to be registered with in a day or two a rush fee of $75 ($150 non members) will be added to work. Performance Deadline Approaching

Performance data must be submitted to the AICA office by August 18 to be included in the September 2023 Genetic Analysis. Please make sure calf data, weights and weigh data have been submitted online or on forms to AICA.

Here you will find the list of calves submitted for that year. To register a new calf click Add.

1. Start with the Dam registration number and work your way down the list. The yellow areas are required to register a calf. Other areas are optional inputs.

2. Select Herdbook the animal should go in (Example: Purebred, Percentage (half-blood bull and steer), Cross Recordation (half-blood female).

a. You can hold papers online to transfer at a later date by clicking the box beside Hold Paper for Online Transfer.

b. If you are wanting to register the calf, click the box beside Register.

3. Review the information to make sure everything is correct. Click Save.

How long have you been in the Charolais breed and how did you get involved?

Jenna – I am late to the game, so I didn’t attend my first Charolais Junior National until 2019 when it was held in Fort Worth. It wasn’t always planned that I would show a Charolais, let alone more than one. Since 2019, I have had at least one Charolais in the barn each year. I have kept enough Charolais cows to run a whole pasture of white cows now.

I became heavily involved in the Charolais breed by running and being elected for the Junior Board. This provided plenty of opportunities to promote the Charolais breed, and to meet a lot of new people. While I’m not currently serving on the Junior Board anymore, I plan to stay involved in the Charolais breed and continue to advocate for the breed, both in the show ring and in a seedstock setting.

What other activities do you participate in?

Jenna– Outside of showing livestock, I enjoy being outside, spending extra time during the summer at the lake and being with friends and family. I have also found many clubs and organizations to be involved in while at Iowa State. When I’m not busy at school, you can find me managing various business Facebook pages and finding part-time jobs to keep me busy.

What is your favorite memory that you have made through Charolais cattle?

Jenna– Finding success in the show ring is always special, especially doing so alongside my family. In 2019, my heifer, CC BS Call Me Maybe 8906 ET, or as we call her, Phyllis, was named the 2019 Grand Champion Owned Female at Showdown in Cowtown in Ft. Worth, Texas. Phyllis and I found success throughout the course of her whole show season. She was also 5th Overall at the Iowa State Fair, and was a triple crown winner at all of the fall majors (American Royal, NAILE, National Western). Phyllis also found success at various jackpots throughout the year. Since then, Phyllis has found her home in the front pasture donor pen as one of City View Farms top donors. Phyllis’ genetics are starting to find success of their own. There were five Phyllis daughters in attendance at the 2023 CharSpangled Banner, four of which won their class, and one won her division. It’s a whole different level when you can watch the animals you raise find success in the show ring.

Most recently, my heifer, WEIS Calli 12K, or, Claire, was named the 2023 Grand Champion Owned Female at The Char-Spangled Banner in St. Paul, Minnesota. I hope that her genetics will someday find the success that Phyllis’ have.

What is your cattle operation based on?

Jenna– My family and I operate City View Farms, located in Prole, Iowa. We work towards our goal of showing elite heifers that make cows capable of producing offspring that can compete at any level. In addition to Charolais, we also have shown and bred Angus, Hereford, Maine-Anjou and Simmental. These cows have also raised offspring that have found success both in the show ring and in other breeding programs. We use a lot of breeding technologies, such as artificial insemination, in-vitro fertilization, and embryo transfer. This allows my family the opportunity to market our genetics on the local and national level.

Who has been your role model in the Charolais breed?

Jenna– I traveled with the Coudron/Schwecke families to the 2019 Charolais Junior Nationals. Zach, Kim and Haley were so welcoming that year and helped to introduce me to many people within the breed. Because of this, I have developed a love for the Charolais breed and they were definitely influential in running for the junior board. The Boyert-Core crew also played a large role in helping me find early involvement within the Charolais breed.

What are your future goals?

Jenna– I am currently a junior at Iowa State University where I am majoring in Agricultural Education/Communications. Post graduation, I hope to find a job in an agriculture classroom or within an ag firm in the marketing/communications department. I hope to be working within the agriculture industry and starting a family of my own. I look forward to staying involved in the show cattle industry while continuing to raise show heifers and bulls to sell.

J&A CHAROLAIS KEEPS PACE TO GAIN SUCCESS

Actively Participating in Charolais Events

It’s full speed ahead for the crew at J&A Charolais, where the Bunker family comes together around the daily ins and outs of breeding, promoting and caring for their purebred Charolais herd near Sparta, Wisc. Everyone is on task as Jeff and Angela Bunker, along with daughters, Shade, 19 and Breeze, 16, work diligently at procuring the goal of developing an offering of Charolais cattle that will work for both commercial and purebred breeders.

Although Angela grew up in the Charolais breed, it was in 1995, the year she and Jeff were married, that J&A Charolais was instituted. The couple met during their college years at the University of Wisconsin in Platteville. Jeff, who grew up on a beef and sheep farm in southern Wisconsin, earned his degree in animal science, while Angela completed her studies in agribusiness.

“I had a few cows, we got married and then we got a few more cows,” said Angela. “Now we run about 40 purebred Charolais, focusing on quality, not quantity.”

With two teenage daughters, the Bunkers are busier than ever, as both girls actively participate in local, regional, state and national shows and events. The girls also stay busy as members of the local Leon Live Wires 4-H Club, and Shade is active in FFA.

Bringing the American International Junior Charolais Association’s (AIJCA) “Char Spangled Banner” Junior National to Minnesota this year, brought even more activity to the farm as Angela represented Wisconsin as cochair of the planning committee along with Sydney Zehnder of Minnesota. Other states co-sponsoring the event

were Iowa and Illinois.

Show Ring Successes Help Pro -

mote Customer Base

J&A Charolais has used the show ring to promote their livestock from the farm’s inception. Although Jeff had not shown cattle until he met Angela, he was quick to join in to present their cattle at shows throughout Wisconsin, state fairs and the American Royal. When the girls came along, they too became involved, and both have shown at the AIJCA Junior National show since they were 8.

During a typical show season, the

Bunkers additionally take their show stock to several preview shows during April and May, their local county fair and the Wisconsin State Fair, which “is a big end of summer highlight for us,” says Angela.

Show ring successes and getting their cattle in front of people has been helpful in building a strong customer base for the Bunkers, who always go to the American Royal and participate in the Royal Breeder’s Bull Classic.

“It’s a great thing for the breed,” said Angela. “Bulls are nominated with an entry fee and each participating farm or ranch then gets to vote on the top five. A jackpot is awarded and the winner receives a cash prize.” Sponsored by the Missouri Charolais Breeders Association, she credits the event for “getting more people involved in the breed.”

While the Bunkers have purchased some cattle along the way, their biggest victories come with winning honors in the Bred and Owned Division. Among those winnings, include exhibiting the Reserve Champion Bred and

Owned Cow/Calf Pair, with a young cow that was also named Third Overall at the 2021 Junior National in Perry, Ga. They also exhibited the Fourth Overall Bred and Owned Female at both the 2017 and 2022 Junior Nationals and again made the top parade in 2023 with Breeze leading JAB Loretta Lynn 253 into the Fifth Overall slot. Even better yet, Jeff and Angela praise the opportunities their girls have had through the AIJCA. Sometimes struggling with mom’s rule – “If you do not give a speech, you do not show,” Shade and Breeze have had good experiences with the AIJCA junior programs and getting to know kids from across the country.

“They’re very fortunate to be involved,” said Angela. After serving on the AIJCA board as secretary during the past year, Shade, a sophomore at Iowa State University, was elected vice president during the

2023 event in St. Paul.

Both girls have placed in the top five of their respective showmanship age groups, with Shade claiming Champion Senior Showman honors at the recent contest. In 2021, both were named Reserve Champion – Breeze in the intermediate division and Shade in the senior division. Breeze, a senior at Sparta High School, will age into the senior division in 2024 and they will be competing against each other as they move into the final stage of their AIJCA memberships.

Breeding Program Focuses on Bull Sales

The Bunkers’ cow/calf operation runs strictly on artificial insemination and an embryo transplant program to take advantage of their top genetics. Some embryos are raised on the farm, but they also utilize cooperator herds.

“Our main focus is those Charolais bulls to sell to commercial and purebred producers,” said Angela, noting that both bulls and females are sold privately off the farm and in a few consignment sales, usually through the Black Hills Stock Show and the Iowa Beef Expo. “We have a pretty good following at both of these and do them annually. Hello, everyone! My name is Weston Schrader, and I am beyond excited to serve as the 2023-24 AIJCA President. This will mark my 4th year as a part of the Junior Board, and its impact on my life is second-to-none. My passion for the beef industry and Charolais breed was sparked by my involvement in our family’s seedstock operation near Wells, KS. Building upon my experience within the livestock industry, I will be a sophomore at Kansas State University majoring in Animal Science. In addition to competing on this year’s livestock judging team, I am also a member of KSU Ag Ambassadors and Animal Science Mentors.

I hope that everyone had a fun and safe trip to St. Paul for the ‘Char Spangled Banner.’ My favorite time of the summer is always the week that I get to spend with my fellow Charolais enthusiasts. Each year, there is always something new that can be taken away from Junior Nationals, and it may be different for each an every one of us. Maybe its a new feeling of accomplishment or being able to welcome a new member into the association. This year for me, it was a new level of exhaustion. And as I spoke with juniors and adults alike, I know I’m not the only one. From getting animals ready for the show to preparing for leadership contests, we all have valid reasons to be a bit tired. However, I don’t think of this in a negative light. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

Ridge Hughbanks, former National FFA Officer, once said, “Being tired means something is being accomplished.” Wether

I’m working in the classroom, show barn or judging van, this statement has stuck with me and has served as a reminder that in most cases being tired is a good thing. Now, this doesn’t give us the excuse to be cranky on show day or sleep the whole way home when its been your turn to drive. It provides assurance that you have been working towards something of importance. In anything you do, having success takes perseverance. We all are involved in a wide variety of organizations and activities, all having different goals in mind for those respective commitments. Our Junior National keynote speaker and former Survivor TV star, Holly Hoffman, reminded us what is takes to be successful in our daily lives: Faith, Attitude, Determination, Confidence, Desire, and PERSEVERANCE.

The Charolais breed is unique. Our juniors have the opportunity to compete at a high level in many events during Junior National, such as showmanship, team fitting, teams sales, cook-off, public speaking, and so much more. Don’t forget about the CharFocus leadership conference at the end of the summer. When juniors are this involved, you bet there is room to be tired. Wait, what about our parents? Don’t you think that they are worn out by all that they do to support us and make sure that we are prepared for the task at hand? We need to remember that its not all about us, and that your success not only highlights your hard work and dedication, but the constant encouragement by those in your corner. Remember why you are here, how you got here, and who has been with you every step of the way. Don’t forget to thank those around you. Certain seasons of the year operate with lots of moving parts, and often times we forget to show gratitude during the busiest of times. We can never

Show Dedicatee

Harlin and Sue Hecht

A legacy that began over 55 years ago- Harlin and Sue Hecht planted roots in the heart of Minnesota where they formed two of their greatest accomplishments: their family and Double-H Charolais.

Sue and Harlin were married in August of 1967 and began their story in a small apartment in Evansville, Minnesota. Sue was working as an extension economist, and Harlin was an instructor of vocational agriculture. As they grew an interest for Charolais cattle, they decided to rent land on a small farm to establish their herd. The first product of Double-H Charolais was purchased in 1968 when Harlin and Sue decided to buy their first cow, D E Lora, from a dispersal sale. In their early days of ranching, the Hecht’s were successful. Lora went on to produce the very first AICA Sterling Dam of Distinction, Double-H Laura. Today, Double-H Laura hangs on the wall in the AICA office alongside Sue and Harlin’s plaque in the AICA Hall of Fame.

Together, Sue and Harlin had three sons. Howard, Mark, and Dale followed alongside the leadership of their parents, and each of the boy’s found success in showing at various Charolais Junior Nationals. As junior members, Mark and Howard both had the honor of serving as AIJCA President. Dale served on the AIJCA board and was awarded Junior Herdsman of the Year. Currently, Double-H Charolais continues to operate as a family affair, and the Hecht grandchildren compete at Junior National shows each year.

As Minnesota natives, Harlin and Sue have devoted countless years as exhibitors at the Minnesota State Fair. For over 50 consecutive years, the Hechts have shown their Charolais cattle at the state fair. Beginning with their involvement in the Minnesota Charolais Association, the couple learned to utilize leadership and created relationships with others in the industry. In 1996, Harlin Hecht was the inaugural Charolais breeder inductee to the Minnesota Livestock Hall of Fame.

The Hecht family has been dedicated to the Charolais cattle business for many years. Harlin served as the AICA President from 2011-2012, and still actively serves on AICA committees. Sue is an active member of Charolais Dees, as well as an active member of various AICA committees. Harlin and Sue have been honorees at the 40th National Charolais Show at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, as well as the 1990 AIJCA

Harlin and Sue are fortunate and grateful for each award they receive, especially one with such high prestige.

The Charolais business has created lifelong lessons for the Hechts. As servants in the industry, Sue and Harlin have flourished on personal levels, which helped them to earn leadership roles. For Sue, those leadership roles and AIJCA events initiated their children’s involvement in the industry.

“You need to get involved and join committees on all levels. Travelling to shows and leadership conferences helped our kids to learn communication and networking skills. Today we have made lots of friends and our close circle has been formed through the Charolais family,” – Sue Hecht.

Those who interact with Sue and Harlin see the true passion they carry for the Charolais industry. Their honest and reliable dedication to the breed is observed by many.

Don Olsen

Patient, genuine, kind; few of many notable ways to describe Don Olsen and his lasting impression on those whom he surrounded.

The valued importance of cattle was taught to Don at an early age. Growing up on his family’s dairy and Hereford cattle operation, Don could be seen as a passionate rancher and leader. Thanks to his involvement as president of the Colorado FFA and the Colorado Junior Hereford Board, Don would continue his professional career as a cattleman throughout life. Influenced by his brother Jim, Don grew a fond interest in the Charolais breed and was intrigued by Charolais genetics. Together, the family established Yuma Colorado Charolais (YUCO), and soon after Don created Fancy Creek Charolais. Even today, Don’s cattle company is still run and operated in Randolph, Kansas.

Much of Don’s success has been closely accompanied by his wife, Charlotte Olsen. Don and Charlotte were married in September of 1975 in Mulvane, Kansas. Together, they had two children and one granddaughter. Their relationship was often spent ranching, travelling, and being involved in their community. Charlotte most enjoyed Don’s curiosity, as they would frequently take day trips to visit new places and people.

Being an Agricultural Economics enthusiast, Don took a visionary perspective on Charolais genetics and the industry’s marketing approach. He believed passionately in the importance of cattle shows to promote the Charolais breed. Don was involved on AICA committees such as Breed Improvement and Affiliate Committees where he also served as Vice Chairman of the Affiliate Committee.

While Don harbored a devotion to the cattle industry, he also offered strong ties to youth in his community. Whether he was leading 4-H clubs or coaching little league teams, Don was eager to assist his children’s teams and youth organizations. He was invested in helping young people learn and grow, and often mentored college kids on his ranch. Because of Don’s passion for youth and agriculture, memorials have been established in Don’s name for the Kansas Junior Charolais Association, Riley County 4-H Foundation, and the Randolph United Methodist Church.

As an esteemed alumni, Don dedicated much of his free time to Kansas State University athletics. Don was an avid football fan

and as a season ticket holder, he dedicated time to cheer on the Wildcats whenever he could. This passion for K-State drove his family members to join the support of the university, but Don’s love for the college especially impacted his granddaughter.

One of Don’s favorite people to guide within youth organizations was his own granddaughter, Nissa Olsen. Many who had the honor of knowing Don could see that he enjoyed the time spent with his ranch buddy. Living only 20 miles apart, Nissa was able to spend much of her childhood growing up and learning the passion Don had grown for Charolais cattle. Today, Nissa has carried forth Don’s Charolais legacy. Numerous summers and countless hours of time spent working in the barn on show cattle instilled a bond between the two that he cherished greatly. While they spent much of their time working, Don and Nissa also made sure to have fun. Whether they were attending football games, driving to town for ice cream, or bonding on Sunday mornings, Don was proud of Nissa and the relationship they shared.

“I would describe my grandpa as a servant leader. He was the type of person who always went out of his way to help others. I sat next to him every Sunday at church, it was just us two in the pew most mornings, but it was often the highlight of my week,” -Nissa Olsen, grandaughter.

Don Olsen passed away on August 6, 2019, at his home. To know Don was to know the true compassion and dedication that a cattleman possesses. Even today, Don’s legacy as a rancher, husband, grandfather, and friend will not be soon forgotten. Don was an authentic man with big dreams, as described by his wife, Charlotte.

CHAD CLARK MEMORIAL OUTSTANDING SENIOR MEMBER MAGUIRE ROHR

“Faith, positivity, and passion for the cattle industry.”

As a Christian man in the industry, Chad Clark Memorial Outstanding Senior Member, Maguire Rohr is fortunate to gain insight from great mentors that share his appreciation for faith and cattle. Carrying a special appreciation for cattle, Maguire also finds it important to display the faith and belief he holds. A special mentor, Reid Nichols has influenced Maguire in many ways. From fitting cattle to being a Christian man, Reid has always been a phone call away to answer questions and share stories with Maguire.

These traits possessed by Maguire have led him on a successful path within AIJCA. As an active member, leader, and decorated exhibitor, Maguire continues to excel and utilize his strengths. Maguire received the Jordan Mack Memorial Herdsman award, alongside his sister in 2021. More recently, he won the 2023 Senior Fitting competition at the Char-Spangled Banner Junior National.

“I am thankful for my accomplishments and honored to be selected from an association that has been such a big part of my life.” Maguire is no stranger to hard work, as he lives and works as a herdsman in California with Silveira Bros, a multi-breed show cattle operation. When he finds free time, Maguire travels to jackpot shows in California, attends church, and catches up with his friends.

His skill and interest in show cattle was taught to him by his mentor and dad, Mitch Rohr. Mitch introduced the show cattle industry to Maguire, who has learned to fit and show from his dad over the years. Aside from show cattle, Maguire gained insight on the importance of producing quality calves and replacement heifers for the future of their operation, Lazy H Ranch.

Despite his busy schedule, Maguire makes it a priority to attend Junior National each year. As a previous AIJCA Junior Board Member, he is honored to be part of the organization. “I enjoy getting to meet more AIJCA juniors. I continue to stay involved with AIJCA by promoting involvement in my area and participating in shows and contests.”

OUTSTANDING JUNIOR MEMBER RYANNE CRUTCHER

“No matter how you do, you’ll always have a big cheering section behind you.” One of the many ways the 2023 Outstanding Junior Member, Ryanne Crutcher describes her experience with the Charolais breed.

The word ‘family’ is one that arises frequently when asked about her time as a Charolais Junior member. Not only does Ryanne delve into how impactful it has been to grow in the breed with her own family, but she also takes time to acknowledge how it’s the other members of the Charolais breed that make everyone feel welcomed and supported, just like a family does.

Ryanne Crutcher (14), from Fair Grove, Missouri takes the time to attest just how much a good support system means when it comes to showing cattle and competing. Her experience as a junior has evolved much in a short time. Ryanne says, “When I first started showing I didn’t want to compete in very many events and now I want to compete in as many as I can.” A testament to just how much of an impact other members within the AICA and AIJCA have made. Ryanne relays that it has been the fruition of great mentors around her who have pushed her to try new things and to work through the things that are tough. Role models like these can be seen in her brother, Lucas, good friend and 2023 Miss Charolais USA, Emma Hankins, and many more.

Back home, Ryanne helps with her family’s small cow/calf operation that primarily focuses on raising heifers. Outside of the AIJCA she is participates in Livestock Judging, Cross Country, National Junior Honor Society, and Student Council. She stays involved with the Charolais breed by being active within her state association as an officer and participating in as many activities as she can at the AIJCA Junior National Show and Leadership Conference each year.

When it comes to the AIJCA Junior National, Ryanne is no stranger. She has attended them for most of her life with her family alongside. Ryanne describes it as, “…one of the best experiences anyone can have. There are a ton of opportunities to compete in events and meet new people. Everyone is welcoming and you’ll meet some of your best friends there”.

Along with Ryanne’s connections made at Charolais events, it is apparent she has made an impact as well. Through her many years of attendance and numerous successful competitions and shows, Ryanne was recognized as the 2023 AIJCA Outstanding Junior Member at the AIJCA Junior National Show and Leadership Conference.

“To me, the Outstanding Junior Award is for someone who works hard, tries all the events, and supports everyone. Being selected as this year’s recipient is a huge honor. So many people that I look up to and admire have received this award, and I feel lucky and thankful to have been selected this year.”

JORDAN MACK MEMORIAL HERDSMAN OF THE YEAR

MAKAYLA HOUCK

It can be said that showing cattle comes with a much greater gift than the success of winning. For Makayla Houck, 2023 Jordan Mack Memorial Herdsman of the Year, this is true. Aside from learning to fit and show cattle, Makayla has learned the importance of attitude, work ethic, and honesty.

“The biggest lesson I have learned is that it’s not always about how well you do in the showring, but more about the people you meet, the lessons you learn and the memories you make throughout the years.”

For as long as she can remember, Makayla has been involved in the Charolais breed. Growing up on a Charolais cow-calf operation, Makayla spent much of her childhood traveling to local and national cattle shows. Even today, Makayla has not missed a Charolais Junior National since she was able to show.

Located in Prescott, Iowa, Makayla and her family base their operation around commercial bull sales. Through their cow herd and retainment of high quality replacement heifers, they strive to raise and market the highest quality bulls for their customers. With the goal of producing bulls built to last in a variety of environments, this approach starts with the genetics in their cow herd. For Makayla and her family, they have found much success in bull production, as she exhibited the Grand Champion Bred and Owned Bull at the 2023 Char Spangled Banner Junior National.

Makayla’s favorite contest throughout her time participating at Junior National is showmanship. As a talented showman, Makayla placed fourth in the senior division showmanship contest at the Char Spangled Banner Junior National. Previously, Makayla has been awarded top 5 showmen in all three showmanship age divisions at Junior National.

“There are so many great showmen in the industry today. I feel fortunate when I am selected in the top 5.”

Becoming a great showman would not have been possible without the help of her great mentors in the Charolais breed. Makayla’s stepdad, Craig, introduced her to the cattle industry. Owning a cow-calf operation, Makayla was able to take note and learn from Craig and his understanding of Charolais cattle. While she sat ringside, Makayla learned how to show at a young age by watching her sister, Haley, compete at cattle shows. These strong influences in Makayla’s life have helped her find a true passion within Charolais, cattle shows, and AIJCA.

“I would not be where I am today without my stepdad Craig, Cody Runft, Justin Patrick, and my sister Haley. I owe a lot of credit to them for everything they’ve done for me over the years.”

In May 2023, Makayla graduated from Southwestern Community College with an associates degree in business administration. Starting this fall, she will begin at PCI Academy in Ames, Iowa to become an esthetician. As Makayla approaches her final year as an AIJCA junior, she still has high hopes for her last time to compete at Junior National.

“In my final year I hope to continue to make memories, meet new people, be a good role model for younger juniors, and enjoy the week! I know for sure that this year will be impossible to top, because there is no award more important to me than Herdsman of the Year.”

While the Bunkers don’t typically sell their bulls for show, they did have the honor of breeding the 2014 Reserve National Champion Bull. The bull was sold through the Black Hills Stock Show Sale to West Fork Ranch, Loup City, Neb. and was later shown by Roseann Wilson to the championship slot at the 45th National Charolais Show in Denver.

Keeping It Simple

Since Jeff and Angela both keep off-the-farm jobs, they buy all of their feed and hay. Pastures, which cover the nearly 200 acres their cows have access to, include a mix of grass and alfalfa. They take full advantage of a grazing window of May to October, when weather allows.

Hay is purchased from a local crop farmer, who not only bales, but stores and delivers hay to the Bunkers as

needed. “That’s been a Godsend for us,” exclaimed Angela.

Focusing on keeping their cattle competitive and marketable, the Bunkers look to the future with possibilities of selling a few more heifers once the girls have completed their show careers and possibly judging some shows together. Jeff has judged shows of all levels and has recently sought the assistance of Angela or Shade to help with showmanship or provide a change of pace, a different voice on the microphone.

But one thing for certain, the family looks forward with the hope of having:

No Regrets

“The biggest regret of your life won’t be what you did, it’ll be what you didn’t do,” said Angela, citing Lee Brice’s song, “Save the Roses”. This is something “we all try to live by” at J&A Charolais.

AIJCA Family of the Year

Family of the Year recognizes a family that shows their support and dedication to the Charolais breed. The Family is always willing to help others in need of assistance and is involved with both junior members and adults. Families should be influential to new juniors and the peers around them. Applications are available online for nominations. The recipient is selected by the Junior Board. The Bunker family was selected at the 2023 AIJCA Family of the Year.

COLLABORATION FUELS INNOVATION: UNVEILING THE NORTH AMERICAN CHAROLAIS JOINT EVALUATION

American and Canadian Charolais Associations Collaborate to Enhance Genetic Merit and Drive International Trade.

In July, the American International Charolais Association (AICA) and Canadian Charolais Association (CCA) joined forces to reintroduce the North American Charolais joint evaluation. This effort is the result of years of dedication and persistence as our two organizations collaborated to revolutionize the Charolais cattle industry.

This long-awaited development brings forth the implementation of a joint set of genomic-enhanced Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs), enabling direct comparisons of Charolais cattle within the AICA and CCA databases. The merger of these genetic evaluations has been a constant topic of discussion among the visionary leaders of both associations, and after nearly two years of research, the highly anticipated joint evaluation is finally set to be unveiled.

Enriching the database

The joint evaluation has made significant improvements to the AICA evaluation. It adds over 600K birth weights, 435K weaning weights, and nearly 228K postweaning gain records, enriching the existing database. Furthermore, it expands the number of genotypes eligible for genetic evaluation by almost 50%, providing a considerable upgrade for single-step genomic analysis. These advancements hold significant value for both organizations.

As a result, the joint evaluation enables producers to select and sell seedstock internationally with enhanced confidence and ease, thanks to directly comparable EPDs and accuracies. However, it’s important to note that while EPDs are directly comparable, EPD Percentile Ranks and EPD averages remain specific to each individual country. Additionally, only traits that are produced and published in both countries will be included in the joint format. Please refer to Table 1

for the list of traits predicted through joint evaluation. Note that Teat Score (TEAT) and Udder Suspension (UDDER) EPDs will not be part of the joint evaluation.

Understanding the Impact

EPD correlations between previous and current evaluations are exceptionally high, with correlations above 0.97 for all traits in AICA animals. Although the correlations are high, breeders should expect to observe changes in EPDs due to the inclusion of additional data. The individuals in the AICA herd book who will experience the most significant changes are those that have progeny data and/or an individual genotype added from the CCA herd book. This additional information enhances the accuracy of assessing relative genetic merit, especially for animals represented in both countries. It is also important to note that some changes will also be due to additional data and genotypes being added from AICA members since the previous April 2023 evaluation release.

Focus on the Ranking

Slight differences in base will affect the entire population particularly for Calving Ease and Maternal Calving Ease. The breed average EPD for active sires CE and MCE has moved from 6.1 to 10.1, respectively. As a

breeder, it is important to focus on the individual ranking of animals to understand their relative genetic merit to the rest of the herd. Even though, an EPD may have changed many animals will rank very similarly. Updated percentile tables are available on the AICA website. No other changes in model structure, heritability estimates or trait descriptions will be experienced by AICA breeders.

Advancing the Mission

In conclusion, the new joint evaluation offers an improved understanding of the genetic merit of Charolais cattle within the North American population. These cattle play a significant role in the genetics of both nations’ cattle populations, and the joint evaluation serves as a valuable tool for Charolais breeders to further their contribution. If you have any questions regarding this new evaluation, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the AICA office.

Ensuring Accurate Evaluations

For accurate evaluations in the joint North American Evaluation, it is crucial to match individual IDs between the USA and Canada. If you notice animals with differing EPDs between countries, please notify your respective breed association promptly. This ensures accurate cross-referencing and evaluation.

Ringle, WI was invited to serve as the judge. Ty commented early in the morning he had been looking forward to judging the owned heifers at Junior National for several months. Throughout the day, Ty commented on the depth of quality and the challenge that quality created when ranking the heifers in certain classes. I heard numerous comments from spectators saying this was one of the deepest sets of heifers they had seen at Junior National. It was only fitting that the Grand Drive at the end of the day was spectacular. Like some of the best fireworks displays help earlier in the week, the final line-up of Division Champions and Reserve Division Champions was awesome, breath-taking, and inspiring to those who love outstanding Charolais cattle.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time meeting and interacting with numerous Charolais enthusiasts at the 2023 AIJCA Junior National.

Kaitlyn Chism, Director of Junior Activities for the AICA, said we had participants from 26 states which made for a fun week at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. As usual, Kaitlyn, the AIJCA Junior Board and summer interns did a wonderful job coordinating events, running shows, and providing exhibitors with plenty of opportunities to develop their leadership skills. As you know, the future of the Charolais breed lies with our youth and I enjoyed interacting with them for three days in a row. Special thanks to those individuals who took time to be interviewed and to the volunteers who served on the planning committee! I look forward to meeting more of you at Charolais events in the coming months.

2023 Livestock Marketeers Hall of Fame Banquet

On June 13th, 2023, The Livestock Marketeers held their 58th Annual Hall of Fame Banquet in Kansas City, Mo. This year’s host was The American Hereford Association and Certified Hereford Beef. The 2023 class of inductees was comprised of Steve Sellers (Posthumous), Mike Sorensen and Joe Rickabaugh.

Steve Sellers served as the Director of Communications for the Georgia Cattlemen’s Association until his death in 2022. Previously Steve held positions with EDJE Technologies, Auction.com, and other firms. Steve and his wife CeCe called Lake Park, Ga home. Mike Sorensen is the longtime owner and publisher of Livestock Plus magazine. Based in Iowa, Mike made LPI a household name traveling the country and providing ring service for some of the most progressive purebred breeders. Mike and his wife Dixie reside in Greenfield, Ia. Joe Rickabaugh has served as the Central Region Field Representative and Director of

Seedstock Marketing for the American Hereford Association since 1999. Before his tenure at AHA, Joe worked for the Kansas Livestock Association. Joe and Tracey Rickabaugh currently live in Topeka, Ks. This year’s event saw the introduction of the Livestock Marketeers Scholarship. This award is aimed at college age students who are interested in entering the livestock marketing industry. Through generous sponsorships and donations, we will be able to deposit over $15,000 into our scholarship fund.

Obituary

Thomas Lynn Sonderup, 67, of Fullerton, NE, passed away Friday, June 30, 2023, at Merrick Medical Center in Central City.

Tom was born November 27, 1955, to Vern and Marilyn (Forbes) Sonderup at Grand Island, NE. He grew up on the family farm west of Fullerton and was involved in 4-H and FFA from an early age. He earned his state FFA degree and American FFA degree, served as a FFA state officer, along with winning the state 4-H speech contest. He graduated from Fullerton High School in 1974.

His junior high claim to fame was the first Charolais steer shown at the Nance County Fair, where he won grand champion in the show ring, won the rate of gain contest, and the carcass contest. His family purchased their first Charolais bull in 1962 and managed to haul him back to the farm in the back of a pickup, with his mom holding her breath the whole way.

He began building a registered Charolais herd in the early ‘70s, while still in high school. He graduated from the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in 1976 and met a pretty special lady, Sandy Larson. They dated in college and were united in marriage on November 25, 1978, at Bethany Presbyterian Church near Chambers, Nebraska. They spent their honeymoon snowed in just down the road. This year would have been their 45th anniversary.

Tom was active in the Nebraska Charolais Association and a member elected to the American-International Charolais Association (AICA) Board of Directors. He and Sandy were honored as the 1990 AICA Seedstock Producers of the Year. The late ‘90s was also a season of team penning for Tom, his brother-in-law Harold Larson, and friend Clark Smith. The trio won the state team penning award three years running.

Tom was known for his early adoption of AI and ET technology and was a

firm believer in the linear measurement system for selecting cattle. He believed this system was proven for selecting cattle with high feed efficiency, red meat yield, reproductive efficiency, and performance. His customers always knew the bulls they were buying were selected for what was profitable at the packing house, not in the show ring. Together, he and Sandy hosted 42 bull sales in the spring and about 25 female sales in the fall. He exhibited cattle at Denver for almost 50 years, plus exhibiting at Husker Harvest Days and the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. He also helped market cattle for other producers and always seemed to be able to connect buyers and sellers.

Tom was a strong believer in encouraging youth in 4-H, FFA, livestock, and agriculture. He hosted livestock judging teams at the ranch nearly every year and was always game to haul another heifer to a show or toss another kid in the pickup. He served as a member and president of the Nance County Ag Society for 40 plus years and volunteered countless hours raising money for the Youth Livestock Premium Sale.

When the state fair moved from Lincoln to Grand Island, he was approached by a few state fair board members about coming up with a solution to provide breakfast for the livestock exhibitors at the new facility. Those discussions led to the purchase of a food trailer and Papa Tom’s BBQ got its start. He quickly built a reputation for quality food, fast service, and affordable prices. Thirteen years later, he catered meals for many events at the state fair, Junior National Angus show, Junior National Charolais Show, Ak-Sar-Ben, and many other events. He also enjoyed serving food at county fairs around the area.

His pride and joy were his grandchildren and he always made time for playing and talking with them or as Rachel would say, “teaching them the right way to work with cattle”. He cherished quality family time, fishing with granddaughters, summer vacations (aka cattle show trips), watching his daughters and grandchildren play

sports, and watching Husker volleyball. He really enjoyed all the visitors and phone calls over the past three months and was blown away by all the donations for the benefit.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy of Fullerton; four daughters, Kelly (Mike) Hale of Fullerton, Jamie (Ben) Keep of Scotia, Tracy (Brian) Gaston of Fullerton, Heidi (Stacey Singletary Jr.) Page of Fullerton; six grandchildren, Rachel, Charlotte, and Isabel Hale, Miles and Riley Keep, and Layla Page; sister, Nancy (Phil) Cole of Brule; brother, Mark (Kathy) Sonderup of Fullerton; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Obituary

Clifford Webster “Bud” Sloan, 84, Hamilton, MO., passed away on June 30, 2023, at the Northcare Hospice, at North Kansas City Hospital, North Kansas City, MO. He previously lived in Lima, Illinois, and Silex and Kingston, MO.

Bud was born on April 24, 1939, in Kingston, MO., to Guy Virgil “Jack” and Florence Elizabeth (Webster) Sloan. He was a 1957 graduate of the Penney High School, Hamilton. He worked as a self-employed livestock sales manager and cattle farmer. He attended the Hamilton Federated Church as well as being a member of the Kingston Federated Church. Immediately following high school graduation, Bud held a variety of jobs including livestock trucker, and he worked for Rock Island Railroad and Otis Elevator Co. in Kansas City. Pursuing his greatest interest, he spent two years as swine herdsman for Ruben Edwards Hamp-An Farms, Middleton, MO. For the next 10 years, he was with J.C. McLean’s Dor-Mac Angus Farm, Quincy, IL., where he showed champions at nearly every major show in the nation. In 1964, he

was honored to be the recipient of the John Brown Memorial Trophy as National Angus Herdsman of the Year. He spent two years as fieldman for the Drovers Journal and the following seventeen years associated with North American Auction Company. He worked over 40 years on a seasonal basis for the American Royal Livestock Show with the last 24 years as Livestock Manager. For over three decades, he owned and operated Continental Livestock Services, a professional sales service company focused on marketing of pedigreed cattle. At last count, he had worked on sales and shows in over 30 states and Canada. Bud was well-respected for and proud of his many contributions to the livestock industry.

On December 1, 1956, Bud married Doris Ann Blackburn in Kingston. She preceded him in death in 2014. Bud was also preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors: 4 daughters-Rosanne (Charles) Newland, Higginsville, MO.; Sherry Sloan, Arlington, TX.; Jackie Sloan, Jefferson City, MO.; and Crystal Gay Sloan, Liberty, MO.; 2 grandchildren-Leann (Jacob) Drury and Michael (Jamie) Newland, both of Higginsville; two great-grandchildrenLucas and Adaya Newland; brotherTed (Martha) Sloan, Hamilton; 1 niece and 3 nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hamilton Federated Church or the Stanley Stout Scholarship Fund at the American Royal.

Charges dependent upon stage of production will be invoiced to advertisers who cancel previously submitted advertising. DISCOUNTS

A 5% discount for all advertising will be given if prepaid for one year. No agency commissions allowed on breeder rates.

CLOSING DATES

All advertising copy (including photos) must be in the Charolais Journal office by the 25th of the second month preceding publication, i.e. Jan. 25 for the March issue or the first working day thereafter. A $100 late fee will be applied to all late advertisements. Proof deadline: 20th of the second month preceding publication, i.e. Jan. 20 for March issue.
