Dr. Clint Rusk, Executive Vice President
Consumer Demand for Charolais Beef Taking the Next Step
This past Spring, I appointed a Task Force to study “Packer Preference for Charolais-Influenced Cattle”. This task force was made up of the following individuals: Brett DeBruycker, Dutton, MT, Scott Eaton, Glendive, MT, Derek Martin, Kinsley, KS, Lee Mayo, Scott City, KS, Randy Schmidt, Gordon, NE, Marty Schurr, Farnam, NE, Wade Small, Winnemuca, NV, Taylor Stabel, Lakin, KS, Brent Thiel, Isabel, SD and Sandra Utter, Pine Bluff, NE. All these individuals are Charolais breeders except for three: Derek Martin is the manager at Kinsley Feeders located near Kinsley, KS. Lee Mayo is the manager at HRC Feedyard located near Scott City KS. Derek and Lee have plenty of experience feeding Charolais-influenced cattle and both admit they are aware of the advantages Charolais-influenced cattle have in the feedyard. Sandra Utter grew up on a cattle ranch near Wheatland, WY and is currently in charge of the GeneNet grid
Likewise, Charolais-influenced cattle are also easy to spot in the pasture, at the video auction or in the feedyard. It seems unfair for our cattle to be discriminated against on a live basis due to their color when they compete very well on the rail once their hide has been removed. This point has really unified our task force over the past few months and is largely responsible for our support of another task force being led by Tom Brink, CEO of the Red Angus Association of America, to explore a change in the way feeder cattle are marketed. Our Charolais breeders agree with those who say feeder cattle should be marketed on their genetic merit, rather than on the color of their hide.
At the beginning of the summer, our task force members became busy with summertime activities and work on the ranch. In early May, I attended a Beef X Dairy meeting in Lubbock, TX where I was introduced to a cattle buyer named Bob Scherer
owned by Select Sires. Sandra has helped several individuals successfully market their Charolais-influenced cattle through the GeneNet grid in the past year.
Starting in April, the Task force met to get acquainted and start discussing the attributes of Charolais-influenced cattle, as well as some of the pushback these cattle received from a few cattle buyers in 2021 and 2022. The list of attributes of Charolais-influenced cattle includes the following: 1) They are very efficient in the pasture and in the feedyard, where they require fewer pounds of feed to put on a pound of gain. 2) Due in part to their lean, muscular body type, they excel at red meat yield when hung on the rail. 3) A high percentage (> 80%) of carcasses from Charolais-influenced cattle grade Choice or better on the rail. 4) When Charolais cattle are crossed with other breeds, they generate progeny that benefit from heterosis and hybrid vigor. Charolais-influenced cattle tend to be vigorous at birth, healthy from birth to harvest, and more tolerant of heat and humidity than their black-hided counterparts during the hottest months of the summer.
The primary reason some cattle buyers use to discount Charolais-influenced cattle is the fact they are not black-hided. We understand the white color of Charolais cattle makes this breed one of the most recognizable in the beef industry.
who works for Tyson Fresh Meats. During our conversation, Bob made it clear that he is aware of the merits of Charolaisinfluenced cattle both in the feedyard and on the rail. In fact, Bob said he preferred to buy Charolais-influenced cattle because they tend to make money for every segment of the beef industry. Realizing I had been introduced to an advocate for Charolais cattle, I seized the moment to ask Bob if he could schedule a meeting for our Charolais task force to meet with the executives at Tyson to discuss ways we might be able to work together to increase consumer demand for Charolais beef. Bob said he could, but it might take a few months to schedule the meeting.
By the end of the summer, Bob Scherer scheduled a meeting between our Charolais Task Force and the executives at Tyson who are responsible for procurement of cattle and the sale of beef. This meeting was held on September 7th and lasted for two hours. Seven Tyson executives met with eight Charolais breeders and myself at the Tyson Headquarters in Dakota Dunes, SD. In addition to some members of the task force formed in the Spring, Mark DeBruycker, Shane Eaton, Ty Eschenbaum, Donnie Leddy, and Bryce Lindskov came along side Brett DeBruycker, Scott Eaton, Marty Schurr, Taylor Stabel, and myself to discuss ways we might be able to help the Tyson sales force market Charolais-influenced beef. After a great first

The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.

meeting of getting acquainted and discussing next steps, the Tyson executives invited us back for a second meeting on December 7th. They suggested we contact Midan Marketing and start the process of developing a label which could lead into a branded beef program.
Since late September, we have now met with Maggie O’Quinn and the folks at Midan Marketing on five Zoom calls. Midan has helped our team better understand consumer preferences when it comes to purchasing meat. In the past few weeks. Midan has been preparing our team for our next meeting with the Tyson executives on December 7th, when our task force will be prepared to share with Tyson what we have learned about consumer preference for meat and how we think the attributes of climate friendly, Charolais-influenced beef can meet consumer demands and contribute to a healthy diet. We are currently working on a slogan and the beginning of a label for Charolaisinfluenced beef. Please stay tuned for what is yet to come!
To date, DeBruycker Charolais and Lindskov Ranch have each contributed $15,000 to help offset the cost of hiring Midan Marketing. At their October meeting, the AICA Board voted to match these funds. If you or your ranch would like to join the ranches listed above to support this cause, the AICA would be most grateful.

Ranching and the Holidays
The hustle and bustle of the day’s festivities
“By now in New York City, there’s snow on the ground And out in California, the sunshine’s falling down And, maybe down in Memphis, Graceland’s all in lights And in Atlanta, Georgia, there’s peace on earth tonight” - Christmas in Dixie (Alabama)
As we approach this holiday season, I think of how the holidays look different all across the world, but I especially think of those Charolais cattlemen across America. Winter looks very different from California to Georgia, from the Lonestar State to Wisconsin, and therefore, our operations look very different during this season, as do our celebrations and traditions regarding the holidays.
My name is Jaycee Littleton and I reside as your Area 4 representative from the great state of Texas! I am currently in college at The University of Oklahoma and I am pre-pharmacy, planning to start pharmacy school in August 2023! Although I have been playing “Let’s have an oh-oh-oh-oh Oklahoma Christmas” entirely too much lately, I am excited to head back home to Texas for the holidays!
certain peace and spirit of giving falls around this time every year. I believe the song We Need Christmas to be ever-more true, as Christmas unites a family and community through the magical spirit of giving.
“There’s magic in Motown. The city’s on the move.”
Further north in Wisconsin, approaching winter on a family-owned show cattle operation looks much different. Rolling corn stalk bales out daily on top of the frozen ground is normal. Snow is not unordinary. Checking water frequently and watching for signs of calving keeps the family busy. In this cattleman’s show barn, calves are being worked to perfection for upcoming shows and sales, and bulls are being prepared to sell. The show barn is shared with cows who are about to calve– the harsh cold outside will not permit a safe birth. “Calving is a big family task for us, usually takes everyone and we all contribute.”
Paralleling the calving season in Wisconsin, Christmas day activities, for my family at least, sometimes feel like a task. The meal, the last-minute wrapping of presents, keeping face around those
“As we enter into the hard part of ranching, the winter season, let us not forget why we do what we do: the togetherness and giving spirit presented by the ranching lifestyle mimics the brief period of time in which the world conducts itself in a like manner – the holidays.”
Winter in Northeast Texas looks like cloudy skies and bitter cold. Everything is dead, and we just started putting out hay around November 1. It is not too wet, but we get some rain/sleet every once in a while. The average low temperature is around 36 degrees Fahrenheit and the high is 57. We put hay in hay rings and do not have to worry about ponds freezing over. We calve some in the fall, but our primary calving season is January-March. Our mild winter allows our operation to thrive during these months.
When I moved to Oklahoma, I had a big reality check… and I had to buy a whole new winter wardrobe! The constant wind in Norman and random snow struck me by surprise. The cold snap starts a little early and is much more aggressive than I am used to. When asking a fellow cattleman to describe winter in the neighboring state of Kansas, he mentioned busting ponds, heated waters, and depending on milo stalks for nutrition. This Kansas rancher rotates pastures, and calves in February-March. “Kansas is beautiful but tricky – it can change a lot in just a few days.” Like the Kansas region of the world, the holidays can be tricky and can look very different from year to year, however, no matter where you are at or who you are with, a
family members – we all have them… in all the hustle and bustle of the day’s festivities, I sometimes forget to be thankful for the opportunity. As a rancher myself, I do not ever want to forget about the passion that drives the lifestyle and I want to be grateful for the opportunities the cattle industry has offered me so far!
As we enter into the hard part of ranching, the winter season, let us not forget why we do what we do: the togetherness and giving spirit presented by the ranching lifestyle mimics the brief period of time in which the world conducts itself in a like manner – the holidays. I challenge myself to be grateful for the cold, grueling days that present the opportunity to ride through cows multiple times a day. I want to be thankful for the dryness that delivers teachable moments on the tractor with my sister – memories that will last forever. In like fashion, I am filled with gratitude for the late nights spent preparing the Christmas meal with my bickering family. I challenge myself to find an appreciation for that weird uncle who I cannot take anywhere.
Alabama said it best…
“Christmas in Dixie, it’s snowin’ in the pines Merry Christmas from Dixie, to everyone tonight”

I’m going to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come….famous song lyrics first written and performed in 1952. Some 70 years later, ninety-nine Charolais breeder and junior exhibitors representing twenty states, travelled to Kansas City for the 54th National Charolais Show held in conjunction with the 2022 American Royal Livestock Show.
With beginnings in a single tent in the Kansas City Stockyards in October 1899, the American Royal has become an integral chapter in Kansas City history and tradition. The first competitive American Royal Charolais Show took place in October 1963. United States Charolais sale records – for highselling bulls and show records – for number of entries shown, were broken with the 1965 Royal! The 2022 Kansas City Charolais week kicked off with the AICA Fall Board of Directors and Committee Meetings and office headquarters reception, October 19 and 20. Missouri Charolais Breeders Association sponsored Royal Breeders Bull Classic with membership from 8 states and the Royal Collection Charolais Sale with buyers from 7 states lead off American Royal activities on October 21. The week ended on Saturday, October 22, with a highly competitive Junior Heifer Show followed by the 54th National Show.

Herdsman of the Year
By: Linda Eck
Charolais blood runs deep through the veins of the most recent recipient of the AICA’s Ted Kelley Memorial Herdsman of the Year award.
“I am honored to join my peers in that elite group of Charolais herdsmen,” said Will Blankers of the recognition he received at the National Charolais Show held recently during the American Royal in Kansas City.
“It was pretty cool,” he said. “I had no idea.”
However, Blankers who was keeping his usual busy pace on show day, said he was ribbed early that morning while making his way into the barn from tie outs by one of his buddies who said, ‘you’re gonna look pretty funny with your head shaved’.
“I just took it as some of the usual kidding that goes on among friends,” Blankers said.
But, as tradition would have it, after the award announcement at the end of the bull show, he conceded, as tradition would have it … “they shaved my head and they shaved my beard!”
But Blankers isn’t new to national herdsman honors. At the age of 16, he was the youngest to receive the Jordan Mack Memorial Junior Herdsman of the Year award presented by the AIJCA.
Now, at 27, Blankers continues his long-standing investment in the Charolais breed, which began when he stepped out with his own WGB brand at the age of 10 with the purchase of two cows from the dispersal of his parent’s herd, Swegle Creek Charolais.
His Lucy cow family and popular donor cow, the 2017 born WGB Lucys Legacy 701, is a great-granddaughter of one of those cows, SC Lucy 444. Using these progeny and others,
Blankers has grown his overall cow herd to nearly 60 head.
“I run about 25 purebred Charolais cows and focus on raising elite show heifers through an Embryo Transfer program,” he added. “We put in a lot of eggs, and most of my cows are recips.” He also noted an abundance of support comes from his mom, Daphne Davis. “I couldn’t do it without her help and support.”
Located about 35 miles west of Peoria, Ill., near the small town of London Mills, WGB Cattle annually hosts two heifer sales, one in April and another the week before the American Royal. All are held through Show Circuit online sales. Bulls are marketed with Wright Charolais in Missouri. And, in 2009, he and his mom began breeding Miniature Australian Shepherd dogs, a project that his mom as largely come to oversee. That being said, the WGB outfit has grown to be known as WGB Cattle & Mini Aussies.
Slowly growing his operation with the goal of making Charolais cattle better, Blankers has been at the halter of many national, regional and state champions and now enjoys helping others to the backdrop.
While growing up, he was active in 4-H, FFA and the AIJCA. He attended Lake Land College at Mattoon, Ill. Before attending Western Illinois University at Macomb where he was a member of the university’s livestock judging team before graduating with a degree in Ag Science in 2018.
Winning numerous awards in livestock judging contests across the country, he shared one “kinda funny” memory from his fourth place in the carload contest at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo.
“I was fourth by three points,” he said. “I took a middle pair switch in the Charolais bull class,” noting the lost points kept him from winning first place. However, when the bulls were judged in the showring, his placing matched that of the show judge. “I lost the contest, but did it the right way.”
“Charolais cows are my life,” quipped Blankers. “When people ask me, ‘Why do you raise Charolais?’ I just tell them it’s in my blood and I like them.”

Show Dedicatee
Bill Nottke is a long-time Charolais member who has reigned in a dream he set upon as a young boy. His spirit and enthusiasm when it comes to having the chance to give back to the breed that gave him so much is truly refreshing. When asked what has made his time with the breed so special, Nottke says, “The people are what make it special, the friends I’ve made and people I’ve met. The people have been my greatest satisfaction of being involved”.
Nottke was born and raised on his generational family farm in Clifton, Illinois. Amidst a changing agricultural time and a growing lack of land available for raising livestock, he raised and showed sheep through 4-H and FFA until he was in middle school. Nottke says that all of this changed when he came across a photo of the Charolais bull, Sam 951, in an edition of the Charolais Banner in his agricultural course at school. It appears once he was exposed to an animal of this sort of prestige, his life set on a different course. Young Bill Nottke made himself a promise then and there that he would one day raise his own Charolais cattle.
In pursuit of this dream, as Nottke grew older, he developed Riverdale Land & Livestock. Though at the time, it was just a hobby it quickly became an incredibly gratifying part of his life where he was able to see his childhood promise to himself upheld. Nottke started with 55 bred commercial cows and two registered Charolais bulls. Over time he added more and more registered cows accumulated from dispersal and private treaty sales. All this leading up to what is now a herd of all registered females.
His time with the Charolais breed has not only been with his cattle, but he has spent much time doing his part to improve the breed and association from the inside. Dating back to 1997 when he was an area director, he proceeded to hold many offices within the association. It can be said that Bill’s humble heart and giving
attitude comes from a place of respect and gratitude for those who were in the association before him, leading and setting the precedence of excellence which we all know the Charolais breed to be. When reflecting on the leadership of those holding office at the time of his admittance to the association and those who came later, Bill says, “Their guidance, long range planning and fiscal responsibility along with our association staff has created the successful entity we enjoy today.”
Not only does Bill understand the importance of appreciation for those who have helped guide the association, but he also holds the youth and younger generations of Charolais breeders and agriculture enthusiasts to a high level of significance as well. Alongside his family, Bill has made a point to be involved with as many youth organizations as possible. Their goal to assist and influence these programs has created a cycle of opportunity to give back which Bill considers one of his biggest pleasures.
Though Bill Nottke has had many incredible achievements, it is hard for him to pinpoint one as his biggest accomplishment. This could be attributed to a mindset focused on always progressing and becoming better than before. However, one of the main successes Bill does recognize would have to be the many lifelong friends he has made since stepping foot into the family we have among the Charolais breed.
Bill says, “I would just like to thank my ranch managers, Butch Sr. and Jennifer Alsup, for all they do to keep the operation running smoothly and continuing to improve the Charolais herd.” Nottke acknowledged that it’s mostly their work that enables him to be a part of the livestock industry. His family is also due a large portion of his gratitude for allowing him to miss several ball games and dance recitals while he is off somewhere being a cowboy.
