CHAROLAIS SPOTLIGHT BELLA PARKER (17), GODLEY, TEXAS

2023

How long have you been in the Charolais breed and how did you get involved?

DECEMBER

10

Bella – I got my Breeder’s Number in 2009, when my grandpa bought my first Charolais at the Sale of Excellence in College Station, Texas. My grandpa, Gary Biggs of Buddy’s Charolais, got me involved in the breed. For as long as I can remember there have always been white cows walking around the pastures. I started showing purebreds at my first Junior National in 2015 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

What other activities do you participate in?

Bella – I’m heavily involved in both Hood County 4-H and Tolar FFA. Besides showing Charolais, I enjoy livestock judging for both FFA and 4-H, and I have become very successful in it as I led my team to the state contest this year where I was the 12th place individual in the state. I currently serve as the President for the Lake Granbury 4-H Chapter, Hood County 4-H Ambassador, and Sentinel for Tolar FFA.

What is your favorite memory that you have made through Charolais cattle? Bella – My single most favorite memory just recently happened, and that was being crowned Miss Charolais USA 2024, in Kansas City. It was such an amazing accomplishment that I had wanted to achieve since I was 8 and first met Miss Charolais USA at my first Junior National.

What is your cattle operation based on & how do you stay involved with the AIJCA?

Bella – Our cattle operation is based on functional cattle that will be successful in the show ring while still being able to reproduce and thrive in the pasture. I stay heavily involved in the State and National Junior Associations through attending many junior shows across the nation and ALWAYS attending the best week of the year, Charolais Junior National. I also serve as an At Large for the Texas Junior Charolais Association of Texas and most recently Miss Charolais USA which keeps me very involved within these associations.

Who has been your role model in the Charolais breed? Bella – My biggest role model hands down is my grandpa; Gary Biggs. Without him I would have absolutely no involvement within the Charolais breed. I’ve always looked up to him because he’s always been there and has never missed a show/function. He always pushes me to perform better and strive to get better everyday of the week, there’s always room for improvement. Not only is he ALWAYS there for me, but he also helps so many young people who want to get into showing by offering quality cattle, encouraging the best in others, and helping along the way. He has always pushed for the Charolais breed, and will tell everyone why they are the best breed of cattle!

What are your future goals?

Bella – My future goals are to attend a junior college and livestock judge then transfer to a senior college to continue my judging and academic career. I hope to pursue a degree in Animal Science and attend graduate school to become a veterinarian or embryologist. Through college and the rest of my life I hope to continue to build and improve my Charolais herd while raising show cattle for juniors to show. *Interviewed by AIJCA Board

to serve on the Genetic Merit Pricing Task Force. As a funding partner to the GMP Task Force, the AICA was allowed to directly seat one member on the GMP Task Force. The AICA subcommittee of Eaton, Metzger, Rusk and Zehnder chose to seat Mr. Wade Small from Winnemucca, NV. During the spring and summer of 2023, representatives of the Funding Partners for the GMP Task Force met monthly to develop a plan for choosing Task Force members and to plan an agenda for the first meeting of the Task Force to be help on November 1 and 2, 2023 in Denver, CO. Of the 10 names submitted by the AICA subcommittee, 9 individuals were chosen to sit on the GMP Task Force. On November 1, 2023, I flew to Denver, CO to meet the funding partners (made up of 7 beef breed associations, Neogen Corporation and Allied Genetic Resources) and the members of the GMP Task Force. Thirty-two individuals representing 15 states and every segment of the cattle industry assembled to help the beef industry accelerate toward widespread use of genetic information in pricing feeder cattle and calves. Twenty-four of these individuals were present for the first meeting in Denver, CO and four more GMP Task Force members joined the meeting online. It became quickly apparent during personal introductions that we had selected a very enthusiastic group of GMP Task Force members whose names read like the whose who of the beef cattle industry. Dr. Ken Odde, Ph.D., former Head of Animal Science and Industry at Kansas State University and facilitator for the GMP Task Force, believes the Task Force has a critical mission that can help make all segments of the cattle industry more efficient and more profitable. Their charge is to help bring objective genetic information into the price discovery process for feeder cattle, which ultimately means more sellers offering this type of information to prospective buyers, and then buyers effectively using this information when they bid on and buy feeder cattle. The next meeting of the GMP Task Force will be held in Kansas City on February 21st and 22nd.

DECEMBER

DR. KEN ODDE, PH.D., FORMER HEAD OF ANIMAL SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY AT KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY AND FACILITATOR FOR THE GMP TASK FORCE, BELIEVES THE TASK FORCE HAS A CRITICAL MISSION THAT CAN HELP MAKE ALL SEGMENTS OF THE CATTLE INDUSTRY MORE EFFICIENT AND MORE PROFITABLE.

t the March 2022 meeting of the American-International Charolais Association’s Board of Directors, Mr. Tom Brink, CEO of the Red Angus Association of America, was invited to present results from a survey of cattle feeders and other beef industry participants conducted via phone and e-mail from October 2021 through February 2022. The focus of this survey was the U.S. feeder cattle market. The objective of the survey was to collect information, opinions, and attitudes about how cattle feeders view the current way price is determined in the feeder cattle market. Additional information was gathered from cattle buyers, backgrounders, auction managers and industry experts. The survey looked at three important topics: 1) Initial questions provided an evaluation of how the feeder cattle market currently operates. The survey also appraised the effectiveness of the current feeder cattle market to establish appropriate valuations from one group of feeder cattle to the next. 2) The survey looked at the contribution hide color has made to improving feeder cattle quality. 3) and finally, survey participants were asked to consider the future and to think about market changes needed to improve industry progress. At the conclusion of Tom Brink’s presentation, there were numerous positive comments made by Charolais breeders attending the AICA Spring Board Meeting. Mike Schumacher moved to work with the Red Angus Association of America in their plan to form a Genetic Merit Pricing (GMP) Task Force. Frankie Anthony seconded the motion which passed. President Eddie Loggains appointed a subcommittee of Scott Eaton, Dennis Metzger, Clint Rusk, and Chad Zehnder to work with Tom Brink to establish a GMP Task Force. During the summer of 2022, the four members of the AICA subcommittee listed above began meeting and discussing names of individuals to serve on the GMP Task Force. These meetings continued through the fall of 2022 and the Spring of 2023. In early April 2023, the fourmember AICA subcommittee submitted 10 names of industry cattle leaders to Tom Brink

Effective January 1, 2024, all 100K DNA kits ordered through the office or submitted online will be billed to the breeder’s account at the time of kit requests. The same will apply to the add on tests for BPA and Horned/Polled. In making this change, we are hoping to increase the efficiency of the process and cut down on the requests for multiple kits ordered on animals. This change should also result in a more accurate expected count of samples arriving at the lab. If any corrections or changes on kit requests need to be made, please contact the AICA Registration Department before sample submission to the lab.

Charolais Charbray International Youth Development Program August 7-14 • Ireland Weston Schrader - AIJCA President Devon Benes - AIJCA Ex-Officio

When David Hobbs and Kaitlyn Chism initially mentioned the 2023 World Charolais Youth Conference in Ireland, both of us immediately responded: “Yes!”. We are both so blessed to have been given the opportunity to travel overseas and not only represent the AIJCA, but just as important: United States agriculture. This trip would not have been possible without the support of the USLGE, AICA, and the Irish Charolais Society. Besides ourselves, the WCYC brought together representatives from the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, and the Czech Republic. Our trip across the pond was just over a week long, filled with many new friendships, connections, and of course, Charolais cattle. However, they look very different than what you might expect. Before the trip, we researched pictures, production practices, and consumer demands of beef in order to have a basic

understanding of what we were to see when we arrived in Ireland. We learned more than we could have ever been prepared for, and that’s not just adjusting to the metric system. To understand why their livestock look different there are many factors to consider, and the Animal & Grassland Research and Innovation Centre at Grange was an amazing first stop for our international group. Dr. Nicky Byrne explained Irish beef production practices, consumption, exports, and so much more. Most programs are hobbies for each family, and on average, each ‘cow farm’ consists of 7 cows with the largest operations housing nearly 300. Forage feedstuffs are never in short supply in Ireland. Their constant rainfall and mild climate allow for grass to be the primary part of a beef diet throughout production. Contrary to the dualgrid grading system here in the U.S., Ireland focuses on cutability and feed CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

efficiency to satisfy both domestic consumption and exports, which chart at 90% of production. Their EuroStar System is similar to most terminal indexes that different U.S. breeds have developed. The research center also uses a portable “Green Feed Machine” that reads RFID tags and measures each individual’s methane emissions. We finished our stop with a tour of their research herds. Some of our favorite stops were at each of the Charolais ‘pedigree farms’. Not only did we explore the genetics and history behind every family operation, but our group competed in judging contests and even a fitting demonstration (much different than one would expect). Your very own Junior Board members even got the opportunity to ‘groom’ a couple of heifers. Weston jumped right in and clipped out a tailhead while Devon perfected a back leg. While our fellow North American counterparts thought

One of our favorite stops was at Clenaugh Charolais.

On behalf of the AICA, we provided a gift bag and information about U.S. Charolais genetics to each of our hosts.

we did quite the job, our new European friends jokingly informed us we had a lot to learn. The final destination was the Tullamore Livestock Show. Every breed of every species of livestock could be found at the all-outdoors exhibition. Throughout the day, we were able to visit and network with fellow Charolais enthusiasts from all around the world. It was a great way to advocate for U.S. genetics. Above all the little details regarding Charolais genetics, grazing systems, pasture management, and the famous show sires used in Europe, the most beneficial part of our trip was being able to proudly represent the United States on an international platform. We took a lot of pride in sporting our AIJCA gear and advocating for the wonderful aspects of beef production, specifically, the Charolais breed within the United States. Please reach out with any questions about our trip to Ireland! A few words do not give this experience justice and we have so much more to share. We are beyond thankful for those that made our experience possible! The Irish Charolais Society advisors and members were the best hosts we could ever ask for! For junior members that are exploring leadership opportunities such as the AIJCA Junior Board, get involved! You never know where it may lead you.

Weston and Devon present a belt buckle to Nevan before their journey back home. He was an outstanding host and guide during their time in Ireland.

Obituary Juel B. Rasmusson was born October 6, 1933 in Ephraim, Utah to Curtis Lawrence Rasmusson and Freda Malinda Bailey Ramusson. He passed away peacefully in his home with his wife by his side October 15, 2023. He just celebrated his 90th birthday. Juel had twin brothers, Ronald, and Donald, and one sister, LaRee. Juel was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. Juel has been a cowboy since a very young age. He began herding cows and riding horses at the age of four years. He recalled herding milk cows to the pasture each morning and bringing them home each night for his brothers to milk. He attended elementary school, junior high, and Snow High in Ephraim. After graduating from high school in 1951, Juel traveled, along with his friend, Dave Hansen, to Fairbanks, Alaska to work for the summer. Juel went to Alaska for the following three summers. He worked many jobs, including for a gold mining company, cook’s helper, construction company building army barracks, and fighting fire. Because of his work ethic while fighting fire, he became fire boss. He really enjoyed all of his Alaska experiences. He told many stories to our family, and we thought it was really exciting. Juel received a completion certificate from Snow College and in 1955, transferred to Utah State Agriculture College where he graduated with a BS degree in Range Management. He married Ann Shand in the Manti Temple this same year. Sydney was born in Logan, while they were living there. While going to school in Logan, Juel was the high point man on the National Plant Judging Team that placed second in the nation. He was also chosen to present the Utah Rancher Award. After graduating in 1957, Juel got a job in Lewistown Montana with the Bureau of Land Management as a Range Manager. Stacey was born while living

there. In 1959, Juel was transferred to Pinedale Wyoming. While living there, Jill was born in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In 1963, the family decided to move back to Manti, Utah, where Julie, Shand, Jedd, and Heather were added to the family. Juel became a self-employed rancher and farmer. His livestock operation included a commercial herd and a herd of registered Charolais Cattle. He was also a breeder of registered quarter horses. He was an active member of the Utah and American Charolais Association’s as well as the Sanpete Cattlemen’s Association. He was President of the Utah All-Breeds Bull Sale for a number of years and an officer in the Utah All-Breeds Bull Test. Juel was involved in Utah Riding Club activities for many years. He was the recipient of Utah State Western Riding Club Association “Outstanding Man” award in 1969 and 1974. Horses were always an important part of Juel’s life. Whether driving Skipper and Skooter, a team of quarter horses, in the cutter races in Wyoming or racing at the fair, he loved his horses. Some of Juel’s most satisfying experiences have been when he was straddled atop a good well-trained and well-bred horse, whether it be crossing the finish line in first place at the Sanpete County Fair or just working with cattle on horseback at the ranch or in the mountains. Over the years, Juel has broke and trained many saddle horses at his ranch. He said that putting a good mouth on a saddle horse is one of the most satisfying experiences that a person can have. Juel was chosen Sanpete King Cowboy in 1986. Juel cherished his old friends and the many new friends that he made, as well as “the best neighbors in the world”. Juel was a hard worker and he taught all of his children to work. He was never too busy to show them how to do difficult chores. CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

N OT E S They soon became a great help to him on the farm. He loved horses and taught them all how to ride and would go to great lengths to see that they were able to participate in 4-H and other fair events. All of the kids had show steers and the Sanpete County Fair, and the Utah State Fair became annual events that the family looked forward to. When people asked Juel what he did, he always said he was raising horses, cattle, and kids. Juel loved his family and spent countless hours with his children and grandchildren teaching them the old values that would help them navigate through life. Many memories were made up Willow Creek, checking cattle, camping with the family, watching beautiful sunsets and at the end of the day listening to Juel recite “Hiawatha” as all 9 of us went to sleep. HE WILL ALWAYS BE OUR KING COWBOY. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother; Ronald, his daughter, Sydney and grandson, Chanse. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ann Shand Rasmusson, his children Stacey (Tom) Heaton, Jill (Matthew) Nielson, Julie (Russel) Cox, Shand (Angie) Rasmusson, Jedd (LaVonna) Rasmusson and Heather (Christopher) Dorny, 27 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

OUR SHORT-TERM FOCUS IS FINDING OPPORTUNITIES WHERE WE CAN BUILD A PARTNERSHIP WITH PACKERS AND THE DISTRIBUTOR SECTOR TO BUILD A PROGRAM.

CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

23 2023

dbisek@charolaisusa.com

1. Research the current market situation and bring potential opportunities to light for further investigation. 2. Dive into the distribution channels from foodservice to retail and connect with packers, large and small, to identify where supply exists and how to get that supply through the distribution channels to end users. 3. Determine the core messages we want to promote that will resonate with end users and what claims we can make to differentiate ourselves from the competition. Marketing messages must be backed by robust data and insights. 4. Develop a program (or programs) that drives end user awareness and consumer demand now and into the future. What that looks like is still to be determined. There could very well be multiple paths to seeing our longterm goal come to fruition. Two potential focus areas have come to light just in the short time we’ve been on the job. We believe Charolais genetics may hold a sustainability advantage that could excite the industry and suppliers who are looking to reduce their carbon footprint. We also see opportunities in the culinary world with fine dining. With its French heritage, Charolais could make a lot of sense in restaurants that are looking to provide a new dining experience. These are just two opportunities we feel could help our cattle stand out in the market. There are sure to be more opportunities yet to be uncovered. As we dive into this opportunity, we’re excited to see where it leads. We can’t do it without the support and resources of everyone in AICA. We’re looking forward to meeting many of you in the coming weeks and months. Please feel free to reach out to us at any time, with your thoughts or ideas. We’d love to hear from you!

David Bisek Director of Charolais Beef Marketing

reating consumer demand for Charolais and Charolais-influenced beef is critical to the long-term growth of our breed. That’s why in April 2023, The AICA Commercial Committee voted to fund staff dedicated to marketing Charolais beef at the retail and consumer level. The breeders felt bringing support on board was the right step to take in the larger focus of building value for the Charolais breed. In September, the AICA board hired both of us – Stacey Rincker and David Bisek to provide focus on marketing Charolais and Charolaisinfluenced beef in the market. Both of us come to the American-International Charolais Association (AICA) with a robust background in the beef and food industries. Stacey’s background includes working with Tyson Fresh Meats while at Midan Marketing, the leading meat marketing agency in the United States. Stacey has prior experience with the Illinois Beef Association and JBS/Pilgrim’s. Stacey has a dual degree in animal science and animal industry management from Illinois State University. David’s background includes working at Cargill beef where he provided marketing support for most of the beef brands in Cargill’s portfolio. He then spent some time with Whole Foods Market and most recently as an independent consult for packaged food startups. David has an Integrated Marketing Communications degree from Wichita State University. With AICA leadership providing their full support, we’ve been making excellent progress in the short amount of time we’ve been in the role. We’ve conducted multiple meetings and interviews with key stakeholders in the industry, and we have many more to come. The long-term goal is to create consumer awareness and demand for the Charolais breed and Charolais-influenced beef across the supply chain, from producers to consumers. Our short-term focus is finding opportunities where we can build a partnership with packers and the distributor sector to build a program. As we dive into this project, there are four components of our process:

GET TO KNOW YOUR DIRECTOR Carter Hoge, Area 5 What is one thing you would say to someone interested in joining the Charolais breed? It is an amazing experience and environment to be in. The people are amazing and there are endless opportunities within the breed. It has been a big part of my life to be able to have the opportunity to be a part of the Charolais breed and I am very thankful for the opportunity. Carter Hoge

I am from Good Hope, Illinois where my family and I show and raise pigs and cattle. I am a freshman at Black Hawk East Community College in Kewanee, Illinois. I plan to transfer to a four year program where I plan to major in agricultural business.

What are your hobbies? Some of my hobbies include coming home from college when I can to keep up with things around home and being with family. I like having the opportunity to go to school in the same state as it has allowed me the chance to make a few trips home to help work on all of the many projects that need done. I also enjoy livestock judging. I have just completed my 4-H career at the National Judging Contest in Louisville, Kentucky. I had the opportunity to be a part of the Illinois 4-H team where we finished the contest second as a team, along with individual success within the team. I am now judging on Black Hawk’s freshman team which I very much enjoy.

Area 5 Director

ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND CONSISTENCY ARE TWO THINGS THAT ARE NEEDED TO SUCCEED.

Who inspired you to become a Junior Board member? Growing up I always wanted to be on the board. Seeing past board members help work the ring and interact with Juniors is what motivated me to run for the board. Along with being supported by my family and state when I told them my goal of becoming a Junior Board member. What is one way that we can continue advocating for the agricultural industry? Creating the next generation of Animal advocates through our programs, contests, and shows. Raising kids the right way with the right views and abilities to advocate for us in the future. What is the best piece of advice that you have been given? Attention to detail and consistency are two things that are needed to succeed. What do you want to accomplish with your time on the ALJCA Board? My main goals on the board include giving back to the association that has allowed me many opportunities. I enjoy giving younger members the experiences that I got to have growing up due to this association and the junior board members before me. I would like to increase numbers and participation within Area 5. As well as help work with the junior board with preparing Charolais Junior Nationals and all the contests and activities that come with it. What color crayon would you be? If I could be any color crayon, I would be white as it represents my favorite breed.

GLENMARY FARM LLC Continuing the legacy By Samantha Corn

Glenmary Farm LLC derives from a long line of history. Since being owned by the Nixon family, they have been dedicated to continuing the legacy of their property. Not only do they uphold the integrity of the land, but they have made great efforts to cultivate a thriving group of family-owned businesses that work together as well as set themselves apart. Glenmary Farm LLC is located in the notable Rapidan area of Orange County, where it borders the Rapidan River. The property has a rich history that dates back to 1733 and was given its name, Glenmary, when Governor Spotswood received the land patent from the King of England. During the Civil War, many battles were held in the area. Throughout the winter of 1863, the farm served as part of a confederate encampment with over 75,000 troops living on Clarks Mountain. However, since 1980, it has served as home to the Nixon family. The family runs a highly diversified

farming operation. This consists of approximately 1,643 acres of owned land and 8,000 acres of rented land. Over half of the land is devoted to crop production. Those acres are designated to growing corn, soybeans, and small grains and a variety of cover crops including rye, vetch, balansa and crimson clovers, winter peas and radishes. The remaining 4,000+ acres are utilized for the beef cattle side of the operation. Being in a primarily cow/calf and stocker operation area, their multi-faceted outfit certainly makes them unique. Their ability to be so diversified has brought forward CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

recognition on many levels. To name one, this year Tom Nixon has been named the 2023 Virginia Cattlemen’s Association Cattleman of the Year. In order to breakdown how the Nixon family has set themselves apart, start with the cowherd. Their herd consists of 1,000 commercial mama cows and an additional 250 head of replacement heifers which are bred each year, calving in both the fall and spring. The main focus of the cowherd is based on the production of crossbreds that are selected for either feeder cattle or replacement heifers. Elizabeth Nixon states, “Structural soundness, functionality and

feedlot with working facilities was built. Two years lates, the Glenmary Farm LLC was chosen to feed and manage the Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association Culpeper Bull Test Program. For twenty-six years, they successfully managed this program and held the annual bull sale each December until 2020. Alongside improvements to their feedlot, they also built a pack barn with working facilities to house weaned calves, calving heifers and/or fat cattle on feed. This gives them the ability to retain ownership on all steers and non-replacement heifers and are able to finish approximately 2,500 head of fat cattle a year. Since their operations works conjointly, they coordinate with a certified nutritionist that formulates all rations. The bulk of the rations consist of feedstuffs that the Nixon family has grown. The program, Performance Beef Analytics, tracks inventory, feed intake and animal health of each pen of cattle on feed. While finished cattle are sold to a variety of places including JBS and Tyson, the Nixon’s are most proud to

They sell USDA Choice and Prime, grass fed, grain finished beef through an online store where local pick-up options as well as nationwide shipping. Their beef is processed at a USDA inspected facility where it is dry aged for 14-21 days and vacuum sealed in a commercial grade packaging. “We feel this sets our beef apart because few people dry age their beef and even fewer will dry age for 21 days. The dry aging process greatly aids in added tenderness and flavor” (Elizabeth Nixon). In addition to Glenmary Reserve Meats, the COVID era brought about a third business for the Nixon family, Virginia Seed Company, which is a cover crop and forage seed company. A variety of services are offered including cover crop seed sales, seed treating, seed cleaning, seed blending and wildlife foodplot seed. Additionally, they also have three turkey houses where they raise hens for Cargill Turkey Production. This side of their operation has proven to be as equally successful through numerous awards, most recently being recognized for the 2017 Family Farm Environmental excellence award – Presented by US Poultry & Egg Association. A long line of history, a gleaming multi-faceted business operation, and an ever-growing list of accolades are just a few of the ways to begin describing Glenmary Farm LLC. They have covered as many avenues of farming and ranching as possible. They have done it on a piece of property that is deeply rooted in its story, but their cultivation has preserved it and given it longevity. They utilize each aspect of their farm to the fullest extent and back their work on proven results.

Yearling weights must be taken at no less than 270 days of age and a minimum of 70 days after weaning weigh date; furthermore, cattle must not be more than 430 days of age. Ideally, yearling weights are taken when all calves in a contemporary group are between 320 and 410 days of age (365 +/- 45 days) to calculate 365-Day Adjusted Yearling Weights. At the same time yearling weights are taken, all other yearling measurements should be completed as well; scrotal circumference, pelvic measurements, hip height, reproductive tract scores and ultrasound measurements.
