CHAROLAIS
Great First Impressions and Carcass Merit
Passion and Excitement
I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting Charolais breeders and enthusiasts at the four National ROE Shows and seven sales I’ve attended, as well as the thirty herd visits I’ve made since joining AICA. To say the least, my time on the road has been uplifting and invigorating. I have looked at Charolais cattle in 80-degree, rainy weather in southern Missouri and in 10 below zero temps in western South Dakota. The common denominator has been the warm and friendly welcome I have received from Charolais breeders across the country. On several occasions, these breeders have been willing to share thoughts and ideas of ways we can work together to strengthen the AICA and hopefully, increase our efficiency. If you would like to help me organize a three-tofour-day herd visit in your part of the country, please give me a call at (816) 464-2474, Ext. 101.
in Denver, I visited with Charolais breeders who have been breeding Charolais cattle that excel in carcass merit (marbling and muscle) for several generations. These breeders talked about the success they have experienced increasing marbling and muscle in the bulls they sell their customers, as well as in the calves their customers are producing. Because of the extra carcass merit found in Charolais and Charolais-cross calves, these animals are excellent candidates for premiums offered by carcass based “grids” such as “GeneNet” and “Sterling Silver”. While in Denver, I learned that one of the major packers is now offering a premium for market cattle weighing over 1,600 pounds. In my opinion, this is good news for Charolais breeders and those who buy their bulls, as Charolais cattle tend to be leaner (less fat) at heavier market weights than some breeds. Thus, Charolais and
I enjoyed getting to know and visit with many of you during the past two and a half months and I look forward to meeting many more Charolais enthusiasts in the coming months. At the end of December, I reached out to the five incoming AICA Board Members (Tyler Davis from Arkansas, Scott Eaton from Montana, Jeff Harrod from Kentucky, Kyle Reaves from Tennessee, and Chad Zehnder from Minnesota) who will be seated at the end of our spring board meetings here in Kansas City on March 23rd. I was very impressed with the passion and excitement I heard in the voices of these Charolais breeders. They can hardly wait to join the Board of Directors and share their leadership for the betterment of the organization! During my first three months at AICA, I have received several phone calls from Charolais breeders asking me to visit with packer buyers about the carcass merit of Charolais and Charolais influenced cattle. These calls were prompted by recent reports of packers telling their fat cattle buyers to only purchase black hided cattle. As many of you know, Charolais and Charolais influenced cattle have plenty of advantages in the feedyard. First and foremost, these cattle are very efficient at converting feed to gain. This efficiency is partially derived from the Charolais advantage in muscularity and their ability to produce carcasses with large ribeyes per hundred weight. Certain bloodlines of Charolais cattle are also known to produce a high degree of marbling, which is the intramuscular fat found within the muscle that gives meat its desirable flavor. During my time at the National Western Stock Show
Charolais-cross cattle should produce a lower percentage of Yield Grade 4 and 5 carcasses at 1,600 pounds, making them a breed of choice for packers seeking heavier market cattle. As you count your blessings in 2022, don’t forget the David Dickerson Family who raise Charolais, Angus and Red Angus cattle near Paradise, Kansas. On Wednesday, December 15th, the farmers and ranchers who live from Salina to Hays, Kansas experienced wind gusts recorded at over 100 miles per hour. Swinging electric lines resulted in broken electric poles, downed electric lines and grass fires fueled by the extreme winds. The result was over 400,000 acres of Kansas grassland burned and several homes destroyed by the fire. The Dickerson’s lost their home, several barns, numerous pieces of equipment and lots of cattle. If you believe in prayer, please remember to pray for the Dickerson Family and the other Kansas ranchers who lost their homes and their livelihood on December 15th and 16th. If you are on Facebook, a Go Fund Me Page has been established to help victims of this tragic fire. I enjoyed getting to know and visit with many of you during the past two and a half months and I look forward to meeting many more Charolais enthusiasts in the coming months. I appreciate your support and advice as we work together to promote the attributes of Charolais cattle.

The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.

Female Enrollments
Female enrollments for 2022 are open January 1, 2022. Regardless of the program you choose, your active females should be enrolled. There are 2 enrollment programs: WHR – Each active female is enrolled at $16 until April 1. For the $16 you get the registration and transfer of the calf born in 2021. You will also get EPDs on unregistered calf with weight data in valid contemporary groups. The enrollment fee goes up after April 1. PPR – Each active female is enrolled, however there is no fee attached to the enrollment. You will pay the traditional registration and transfer fees as you register and transfer the calves, depending on the age of the calf. EPDs on unregistered calves is not part of the PPR program. 2022 Dues Reminder Reminders were mailed in November. Active members – $100; junior member – $25. Junior member Charolais Journal subscriptions are an additional $25. Be sure to update all contact information including e-mails and websites. If dues are not renewed for 2022, online passwords will not work. Spring 2022 Annual Membership Meeting
AICA will hold the 2022 Annual Membership Meeting and Board of Directors Meetings, March 22-23. The meetings will be held at the Kansas City Airport Marriott. Refer to page 20 of this issue for more information. Tickets for the Annual Membership Meeting and Awards Breakfast can be ordered through Miranda Hoag. CCC AD ASTRA 1027 P
We’ve always loved Blue Value’s ability to produce fault-free females, but his bulls always seemed a little weaker until they were 18 months old. We feel Ad Astra’s sons will be more rev’ed up and ready to work as yearlings. Ad Astra’s incredible, heavy milking, first-calf heifer mama not only raised him up to a 1003 lb. AWW, but laid down and had a Mescalito bull calf 286 days later. 1027’s build, mass, performance, and bred-in maternal potency has us confident in his ability to truly leave an impact on the breed. Retaining 1/2 semen interest and choice of spring or fall possession. HOMOZYGOUS POLLED

1019 is out of a no-miss BenelliLedger that has generated frontend replacement heifers and 2 consecutive pen bulls. Last year’s son was purchased by Full Circle Cattle Co. 1019 is one of the big reasons why we are so excited about Mescalito. Natural width, dimension, performance and quality in one package. 1059 is backed by 655, an incredibly productive full sister to Redemption. If you like them square built, smooth made with extra belly and scrotal, give Lark a look. Retaining 1/3 semen interest.

1015 is another full brother to Red Kingdom and 1009 (our high-selling female in November.) He was on a poor recip, came off a hundred pounds lighter and never caught up, but stayed even with the other studs. His fault-free build, presence, and genetic makeup made him hard to leave home. Retaining 1/3 semen interest.

CALVING CAMERAS SAVE CALVES by Heather Smith Thomas
Some ranchers are utilizing modern technology to assist in monitoring cows during calving. This saves time and labor, and they don’t have to go outdoors as often in severely cold weather to check cows. Julie and Ivan Demmans have about 170 purebred cows and 100 commercial cows. “We bought our first camera for the calving barn in 2012 and were amazed at how much easier it makes calving—with less trips out to the barn,” Ivan says. This really helps, when a person is busy and tired, and especially helpful with heifers because you can watch them closely without disturbing them. “You don’t want to bother them, and this way you can still watch them through the entire calving process and make sure the calf is coming properly,” he says. The less you disturb them, the more likely they will go ahead and calve, without being upset. You can also watch and see if the calf gets up and nurses. Sometimes a heifer loves her calf but is so intent on licking it that she keeps facing it and won’t let it get back toward her udder. They keep going in circles. “We start calving in January,” says Julie. “Sometimes it’s very cold, like minus 30 or minus 40. The camera really helps because even though the cows are in the barn we still need to keep an eye on them when it’s that cold.” Newborn calves need to nurse quickly, before they get chilled, to get colostrum and obtain the energy necessary for keeping warm. There is also a lean-to built onto the barn. “The camera is sitting in the barn wall, so we can watch cows in the lean-to as well as the ones in the barn,” Ivan says. “If necessary, we can put 10 to 15 head in the barn and the lean-to will hold up to 30 head with loose housing.” This gets them closer to the barn and if a calf comes as a surprise it’s out of the wind and snow. “We got the outside camera in 2016. It took us a few years to decide to go ahead and get that one because it was quite a bit more expensive. It overlooks a larger area; we have several calving pens outside. The farthest one is probably 200 yards away and we can still see if something is happening out there—and it actually shows up better at night with the infrared,” he explains. “You can’t have a camera too close to a yard-light,
however, or it interferes with the infrared. We have the outside one on top of our power pole that has the yard-light on it, but the camera is about 10 feet above the light,” he says. With the light not shining directly on it, this doesn’t interfere with the camera. Both the indoor and the outdoor camera are infrared, but the barn camera has only a 10-power zoom.

Calf scours are not inevitable. A strong prevention program is non-negotiable. Dependable scour prevention is essential for calf welfare, employee morale and business profitability. The immune system’s response to vaccination is variable and unpredictable. That’s why giving preformed antibodies instead of relying on a vaccine to stimulate antibody production is so important. I’m all for removing uncertainties. So yes, I stand by this product. (And no, I’m not.)

continued from page 31 The outside one is a 30-power zoom and can cover a larger area. “In the daytime you can zoom in close enough to see fence posts half a mile away. I use this quite a bit in the spring when we AI the cows. I can zoom out into the field and see the cows that are bulling. You can’t read the tags from that far away but you can see where they are—and when you go out to feed you can watch and see where the cows are coming from, and see that they’ve been in heat. The camera can direct our focus when we’re checking them,” Ivan says. “The zoom is controlled with a joy-stick inside the house,” Julie says. “We can move the focus, and also switch back and forth between the two cameras. Depending on what you want to see, you can look at either one.” Ivan says they sometimes still have to go outside because there are a few blind spots the camera won’t show. “It seems like sometimes the cows tend to hide in those areas--behind a windbreak or something--where you can’t see them,” he says. “Sometimes when a cow is in the barn calving you can’t see right behind her,” says Julie. “If she doesn’t get up right away you don’t know if the calf is born or if the sac is over the head, so you still need to go out now and then to check on things like that. But the camera allows you to monitor what’s happening, most of the time, and decide whether you do need to go out.” It reduces the number of trips out to the barn. The outdoor cameras have shown a lot of things that were not obvious before. “It’s amazing the number of coyotes that go through those outdoor pens,” says Ivan. “One year I lost a calf to coyotes. I’d been out and
checked a heifer that had just calved and the calf was ok and I left the pair outside because it was warm weather. A couple hours later I looked out and there were 4 or 5 coyotes and they had killed the calf.”The camera is handy for checking on anything around the barnyard, even when it’s not calving season. “We use the camera often, even if it’s just to see what the dog is barking at,” says Julie. “It might just be deer he’s barking at, but it’s good to know what’s going on. Sometimes the cows might be out, and we’d see that as well,” she says. “We can also set the camera up near our equipment, for security purposes,” Ivan says. “We can have it scan the yard every so often, or check the area by our fuel tanks once an hour. There have been issues with quite a bit of rural crime in our area.” The picture can be viewed on a television set. “We have one we watch for TV and one for the barn. Now we have two 42-inch TV sets in our living room. If we are watching TV, every time there’s an ad or commercial we just scan all the cows!” he says. There are several companies that sell cameras with lots of security cameras, and cameras on farm equipment. “We find ours quite entertaining when the grandkids come to visit; they like to watch it,” says Ivan. “Not only the grandkids; my dad likes to watch it too, and he’s in his 90’s. One winter after mom passed, we brought him down here quite a bit when he was still living on the farm, and he’d sit and watch that camera for hours and watch the cows calve. He still enjoyed the cows even if he wasn’t able to go out there himself.” Sometimes when Ivan is out feeding he puts a cow in the barn. “I’d often phone Julie in the house and tell

her that I’d put a cow or heifer in the barn and have Julie watch her so I could keep feeding,” Ivan says. Julie says that if someone wants to buy a camera they should look at the different choices available; there are many options. You can have it set up to view on a cell phone as well as on a TV in the house. Ivan recommends getting a good zoom so you can zoom in for a closer look at something, and also a camera that rotates. “If you buy a stationary one you are always looking at one place and there are too many dead spots. You want to be able to scan the whole barn.” It’s worth spending a bit more money to get a system that will be beneficial for many years rather than having to change it a few years later. Both the inside and outside camera are very helpful but the one outside has many uses besides calving. “We use it throughout the year, as well as having a look in the calving pens,” says Ivan. “Some of those old cows can look pretty innocent when you go out there, and you wouldn’t know they are calving, and as soon as you leave—and come back in and check the camera screen-they are calving!” Last year they saved a cow that got over-centered, stuck on her back. “By chance Ivan was showing me something on the camera and scanned the pen, and we saw four feet up in the air. We saved her; we got out there in time, but she was in the farthest corner of the pen and we would not have noticed her except for the
camera,” Julie says. Her calf was backward. Ivan tried to roll her over and couldn’t, so he put a halter on her and pulled her around. “Julie said there was a calf there. It was dark and we hadn’t seen it. I told Julie it will be dead, but I grabbed its feet and pulled it out, and it was still alive. So we saved both the cow and the calf, thanks to the camera,” he says. Many times they’ve been able to save a calf, just by realizing something is wrong, like the amnion sac still being over the nose. Sometimes a heifer will calve and just lie there instead of getting up; the sac is still over the calf and doesn’t break and the fluid is still around his head and he would suffocate. And some cows stand up too soon and dump the calf out on its head, with the body doubled over. “It’s so interesting, watching. Ivan will be going out there to help that calf, and I’ll still be watching on the camera. Some of those calves can wiggle around and be ok, or the cow will be smart enough to start licking and rooting and get that calf straightened out and flipped over,” says Julie. “As we get older, these cameras allow us to keep doing what we do. It really helps, to not have to keep going out there so much. It keeps us more connected to watching the cows when we can’t be out there all the time. I tell Ivan that this was the best money he ever spent!”

BONDING ISSUES – HEIFERS THAT DON’T MOTHER THEIR CALVES by Heather Smith Thomas Sometimes a heifer is confused or indifferent toward her newborn calf. She may continue to lie there after the calf is born, and doesn’t get up to lick the calf. When she does get up she may seem surprised to see this small creature behind her. She may ignore it or walk away, or kick the calf when he gets up and staggers toward her. Some heifers attack the calf and knock him down if he tries to get up. If you had to pull a heifer’s calf, this may disrupt the normal bonding process. If you take a newborn calf to the barn to warm and dry it before his mother has a chance to smell and lick it, this may also disrupt bonding. A heifer may be indifferent toward her calf following a difficult birth or C-section surgery; pain responses in the body can temporarily hinder maternal hormones. Dr. Joseph Stookey (retired professor, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), says the bonding process, as the cow identifies and learns to recognize her new calf, and wants to care for it and protect it, is a complex blend of hormonal-induced and learned behavior. Hormones initiate and drive most of what we perceive as maternal behavior, as the cow bonds with her newborn calf. “Some cows become receptive up to a week before they actually calve, and become interested in any newborn. Their hormones are already reaching a level that makes them receptive to any new calf, even if it’s not theirs,” he says. “At the other end of the spectrum are the cows that calve and don’t have proper hormone profile or levels, and they don’t want their calf. We see this most often in first-calf heifers, or in some of the females we assist, or those that must be delivered by C-section. If it’s too much of a wild hassle getting that cow in from the field to the barn or corral for assistance, or they undergo too much trauma, you can expect them to be less interested in the newborn calf. There may be other hormones overriding the whole system, due to stress, pain, and perhaps some of the drugs that were used during a C-section,” says Stookey.
TIPS TO ENCOURAGE BONDING At one point in Stookey’s career he managed the sheep unit at a research station in Illinois. “One year we
lambed out 300 Texas ewes that were range-raised and wild. There were a few that needed assistance. You’d corner the ewe, lay her down and pull the lamb, but when you let her up, she’d take off and never look back. We learned that if you smear birth fluids over the muzzle, into the mouth and across the tongue, those ewes—even if they ran off—they would start licking their lips and this would jump-start that hormonal process and they’d come back looking for the lamb. I do this on cattle, also, whenever we have to do C-sections or handle dystocia. Before you let the cow out of the headcatch or get her up, drag some birth fluids across her muzzle and into her mouth,” he says. “The birth fluids seems like a turn-on. If she can start licking the calf, she will generally mother it. If a cow or heifer is slow to lick her calf, some people pour feed over the calf (something the cow would be interested in eating) to get her to sniff and lick around the calf and taste the birth fluids.” Usually after the calf has suckled the first time, the hormones of motherhood kick in, but some heifers that reject their calves need to be restrained for several nursing sessions or even several days or weeks before they accept the calf. It’s always a case-by-case situation; what works well for one might not work for another. It usually helps to keep the pair in a small pen and have the cow/heifer hobbled so she can’t kick the calf, or have them in separate pens for a few days. You may not need to restrain her when you put them together, and simply supervise (and keep her from running off or butting the calf with her head). If it’s a small pen you could feed the heifer at nursing time so she will be more interested in eating than trying to avoid the calf, and he can nurse— and won’t be kicked because she is hobbled. Buddy Westphal, a Charolais breeder (Valley View Charolais Ranch, near Polson, Montana), has had many years’ experience dealing with the occasional problem heifer that is slow to accept motherhood. He says there are always a few heifers that don’t accept a calf at first, because the hormones don’t “kick in” when they are supposed to. Sometimes a heifer that doesn’t bond with her calf right away can be challenging, just because the optimum window for bonding goes past. “If the calf was born weak or a little premature and needs medical attention (and you take it away) she may not accept it when you bring it back to her,” he says. continued on page 86

Why Not
Use a Registered Charolais Bull? If your goal, as a beef producer, is to market a calf with wide market acceptance, why not use a registered Charolais bull? In a recent analysis of seven years of extensive Superior Livestock video auction marketing data including more than two million head of cattle, Charolaissired steer calves outsold all other English-Continental breed cross steers by $3.73 per hundred weight.1 Use genetic verification through CharAdvantage to earn more premiums.

continued from page 63 If a heifer is indifferent and not interested in her calf or won’t let it suckle, he helps the calf get to the udder. “For the past 25 years we’ve used a combination of administering a little tranquilizer to the heifer and some powder sprinkled on the calf—to entice the heifer to lick him We use the commercial product O-No-Mo (OrphanNo-More) that smells terrible. You have to follow the instructions, dampening the calf with a damp towel (if he’s already dry), sprinkle the powder on and massage it into the hair. We also take a handful and smear it on the cow’s nose. It has a salty tang, but whatever it is, the cow wants to lick it off the calf,” he says. “To make sure she is receptive and won’t kick the calf, I give her a tiny bit of tranquilizer. A tranquilizer must be prescribed by a veterinarian, and only a partial dose is needed for the cow to become sleepy. You figure dosage by size/weight of the cow, and her attitude. If she is mellow it takes less than if she is excited and upset with a lot of adrenalin,” he says. The proper dose makes the cow just sleepy enough that she doesn’t think about kicking. “She’ll let you work in the stall and quietly help the calf nurse without having to put her in a chute. You have time to do it and get the calf sucking, and this stimulates the proper hormones, without getting the cow upset,” he says. The key is being able to do it calmly. “This is when that combination of the O-No-Mo product and a sedative works well. The last thing you want to do, however, is overdose the cow and make her want to lie down and go to sleep! If you do it right, it works very well,” says Westphal. “When the cow ‘wakes up’ the calf has already nursed (which stimulated oxytocin release in her body), and she’s a mother. With the powdered product on the calf’s back, she wants to lick it. The calf is happy because he’s had dinner, and the cow is happy because she smells that stuff on him and wants to lick it,” he says. Having cattle with good temperament that are easy to work with, without stirring them up, is part of the key, and the tranquilizer enables you to assist the bonding without having to restrain her. “For many years I helped the calf suck with his dam in a chute so he wouldn’t get kicked. After I learned that I could use a tranquilizer instead of having to restrain the cow, it was a lot easier, and easier on the cow. You can do this in a barn stall and then leave the pair together, right where the calf learned to suck. That’s much better than letting the cow run out of a chute, with the calf not knowing that was his mama.” Most heifers accept the calf after that first nursing, but a few still try to kick the calf and may need hobbles for a few days. “With some that are a little slow to accept the calf, we run the dog past them, and usually their protective instinct kicks in. The cow will generally check on her calf and want to protect it from the dog,” says Westphal. “Another test, to make sure she is mothering that calf is to move the pair from one place in the barn to another, to see if the cow is looking back and saying ‘Come on, baby!’ If she’s keeping track of the calf, you know they are bonded. If she just marches off and never looks back or isn’t worried about that calf at all, she’s not ready yet!” 90

OXYT
THE ROLE OF OXYTOCIN
Changes in progesterone and estrogen levels initiate the birth process, but rising oxytocin levels are what trigger maternal behavior. Oxytocin is released in the cow’s brain during birth. “Its presence in the olfactory bulb of the brain helps explain the role of smell and the importance of odor in the bonding process; the cow recognizes her own calf by smell and is always able to pick her own calf out of a group of calves,” Stookey says. “Cervical stimulation and release of hormones during the normal calving process play another significant role in initiating proper maternal behavior,” explains Stookey. Release of oxytocin is caused by stretching/stimulation of the cervix and birth canal. Studies show that cervical stimulation (gradual dilation of the cervix as the feet of the fetus push against it with each uterine contraction, and then passage of the fetus through cervix) is one of the triggers for oxytocin release. “If you do a C-section there isn’t much cervical stimulation, since the fetus doesn’t have to come through. This could be another factor that plays a role when the cow doesn’t mother her calf as well. Analgesic drugs used during a C-section to block pain can also interfere with oxytocin release,” says Stookey. First-calf heifers produce less oxytocin than cows who’ve had previous calves—and this may be why heifers may be less motherly and more apt to reject or abandon their calves. “Giving birth seems to prime the system and allows for release of larger quantities of oxytocin with subsequent births. Heifers have a disadvantage on two counts. They are less experienced than cows, and also have lower levels of oxytocin release in the brain during calving,” he says.
CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
TOCIN A few heifers seem indifferent to their newborn calves, and within 12 to 24 hours become more motherly. In some instances, a heifer may not have much milk at first, and then as her milk starts to come in, she becomes more interested. Oxytocin is the hormone associated with milk letdown, and is also very closely tied to maternal behavior. If a heifer is indifferent, or actively rejects her calf, if you can assist the calf in nursing, she generally becomes more receptive to motherhood. The act of suckling stimulates release of oxytocin. When you realize that mothering behavior is hormonally driven, you realize it won’t help to punish an unmotherly heifer, yet some people get very angry. “If she kicks or head-butts her calf, they want to hit her. Yet she is simply treating this calf like she’d treat any calf that wasn’t hers,” Stookey explains. She needs more oxytocin, the “mothering” hormone in mammals. The reason that a non-motherly cow or heifer eventually accepts her calf is because she gets more of this hormone circulating after the calf nurses, though in some instances it may take a few days. “Some folks might think we can resolve the problem by giving her a shot of oxytocin. It doesn’t work that way, however, because it doesn’t get to the brain. It goes to other places in the body, such as the cervix or the uterus to stimulate contractions, or to the mammary gland for milk letdown. It needs to go to the brain. So if you restrain the heifer (so she can’t beat up on her calf) and let the calf start to suckle, this stimulation of the udder can cause milk let-down. That stimulation is coming from an oxytocin release in the brain, so over time some of these cows/heifers become more motherly after the calf has nursed a few times. Nursing stimulates the oxytocin production in the brain, which is where you need it,” he explains.
