First impression in judging can be your best impression
F
First impressions in the livestock industry can be very important to the stockman. I remember the late R. B. Warren, the great livestock judge from the University of Nebraska, telling us that your first impression in judging can be your best impression. So when you hear about how Warden Dudley bought a mare that was probably destined for the killers, you can imagine how important it was for him to get a strong first impression not of the mare but the little filly at her side.
Top Flight b y Golden C hief was th e sire of Ro Photo Court an Queen. esy The AQ HA Hall of Fa me and Mu seum
The little filly was born in1944 and registered as Roan Queen. Roan Queen became the foundation of the Warden Dudley breeding program of Osborne, Kansas. This program became the Dudley and Acre Ranch. The Dudley and Acre Ranch came into existence when Warden Dudley’s daughter Ramona married Bob Acre. Roan Queen as a foundation mare for this program is one of our Mares With More. Bob Acre recalled his father-in-law and what kind of person he was this way, “He was born in 1902 and they drove buggies to town. He was raised around ‘high tail’ horses; saddlebreds, standardbreds or buggy horses. The family raised registered Hereford cattle. He lost his parents at an early age. He lost his mother at 12 and his father at age 17. He raised himself and went through high school, which was unusual to go to high school in this country during this time. I know a lot of older men around here that didn’t graduate high school.” Page 16
He continued, “He was awful cranky about a horse’s foot whether they were crooked and such. He was back from when they worked horses and they had to be sound.” Warden Dudley told the following story to Hanna H. Stewart in the story “Warden Dudley, Breeder” in THE QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL of July 1974 and how he got Roan Queen, getting his start as a quarter horse breeder, “I ran across the old mare and this baby filly in the summer of 1944. The mama looked like she was headed to the canners. She was about as poor as anything could be. But she had the prettiest little filly on her that I had ever seen.” Dudley continued his story, “Well I just had to have that filly. She was about three months old, so I bought both the filly and the dam. Of course I paid too much, or so everyone said. I named the filly Roan Queen.” THE WORKING HORSE • FEBRUARY 2010

Dudley went on to explain that it was difficult to register the filly, as the man that had bought her from her breeder had died in an accident. But after some legwork, he got her tentative AQHA number and then based on her produce record she got her permanent number. He also told that the filly’s mother regained her condition and he produced several more good colts out of her and by thoroughbred stallions. Bob Acre, Dudley’s son-in-law, confirmed the purchase of the mare and filly for $160.00. He believed the sale was held at La Juanta, Colorado. The breeder of Roan Queen was A. S. Kitch and Sons of Rocky Ford, Colorado. She was sired by Top Flight. Top Flight was a son of Golden Chief. Top Flight was born in 1938 and bred by R. L. Underwood of Wichita Falls, Texas. Golden Chief was the modern connection to the stallion Copperbottom, who founded the second oldest family of the modern quarter horse. Golden Chief was sired by The Yellow Stud by Buck by Rocket by Rock by Copperbottom. Sam Houston, the legendary statesman of Texas, brought Copperbottom to Texas. One of the interesting things about R. L. Underwood as a breeder was the broodmares he used in his breeding program. We have looked at such mares as Little Mother THE WORKING HORSE • FEBRUARY 2010

and her ties to the Y Ranch and the Triangle Ranch. She is found in the pedigree of horses like Peppy San Badger, the NCHA Hall of Fame cutting horse and leading sire. But the Underwood broodmare band included Old Joe Bailey mares (the Weatherford Joe Bailey), the Zurick Mares and Waggoner Ranch mares. Miss Waggoner was the dam of Top Flight. She was a 1933 mare bred by the W. T. Waggoner Estate of Vernon, Texas. Miss Waggoner was sired by Buck Thomas, a Peter McCue son. Buck Thomas was out of Stockings by Old Fred. The dam of Stockings was Primera by Primero, a thoroughbred. Buck Thomas was the product of the Coke Roberds breeding program of Colorado. Coke Roberds stood both Peter McCue and Old Fred. Miss Waggoner was out of a daughter of Midnight. Midnight was sired by Badger by Peter McCue. This gives her a breeding pattern of 2 X 4 to Peter McCue. The dam of the Midnight Mare was a Waggoner Mare, breeding unknown. Miss Waggoner was the dam of Miss Dexter. Miss Dexter was the dam of Lassie Caesar. Lassie Caesar was an ROM racehorse and dam of Lassie’s Dream, who was the 1955 American Quarter Running Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. Lassie’s Dream was the dam of the AAA rated AQHA Champion Magnolia Bar. Magnolia Bar was the sire of the AQHA Supreme Champion Magnolia Pay. Magnolia Pay in turn was the sire of the great halter mare Magnolia Gay, 1972 and 1973 AQHA High Point Halter Horse. This great halter mare was an AQHA Champion that earned 941 halter points. She was Superior in Western Pleasure as well. Top Flight was an arena ROM producing stallion with Flight’s Pride. But it was through his daughters that Top Flight made his biggest contribution. His daughter Sis Flight was the dam of two AQHA ROM arena performers in Lady Van Flight and Miss Van Flight. Lady Van Flight is an AQHA Superior Halter Horse. Texas Fizz out of Susie Lue by Top Flight was an AQHA Champion. Her foal Snap’s Last was an AQHA Superior Performer. Susie Lue was the dam of four ROM arena performers in Snap’s Last, Texas Fizz, Bill’s Tequila Page 20
and Little Red Diablo. Jan’s Juanita was the dam of the arena ROM performer Juan Sweet and Toppy II was the dam of Taylor Son, another arena ROM performer. Wimpess Model was the dam of the AQHA Champion and ROM performer Supreme Model. Amiga and Chocletto were both by Top Flight and they were producers of racing ROM. Amiga produced Amiga’s Bar and Chocletto was the dam of Oscar. The breeding of Roan Queen’s mother has remained unknown. Acre described her as a “cold blooded mare.” As he later put it, “She was an ole broncy roan Kitch mare.” He went on to tell that she was a pretty wild kind of a mare. One of the interesting things about all this is that Warden Dudley never had a stallion that defined his breeding program. He bred his mares to outside stallions building a very good broodmare band in the process. The process has proven to be very successful with a pasture full of mares that became noted producers. The first outside stallions used by Dudley was Star Duster. Star Duster was owned by Quentin and Evelyn Semotan, Steamboat Springs, Colorado at the time. He was a top halter stallion being named Grand Champion at shows like the 1948 National Western Stock Show in Denver and the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show in 1948. He was named the Champion of Champions at the 1948 Fort Worth Stock Show, a special honor bestowed on the horse that was to win a class of Grand Champions from other shows. This win was over horses that included the great Poco Bueno. Here is an added note: Buck Thomas, the sire of Miss Waggoner the dam of Top Flight was Coke Roberds bred. Quentin and Evelyn Semotan were closely associated with Coke Roberds. A recent visit with the Semotan’s daughter Jo tells us the Evelyn was the person behind Roberds registering his horses with the AQHA. She filled out the paper work. The Semotan broodmare band was founded on the Coke Roberds bloodlines. This gives us an interesting tie between Star Duster, the Semotan mares and the Roan Queen’s sire Top Flight. Acre believed that Dudley’s interest in Star Duster came about because Mrs. Dudley had a sister in Denver and they went out to visit and by chance met Quentin Semotan. As you will recall, Star Duster was the Grand Champion Stallion at the National Western Stock Show in 1948. Acre recalled going to the Semotan’s ranch while on their way to Calgary, Canada and how isolated it was to go there. He recalled about Warden Dudley and one trip to get Roan Queen bred to Star Duster. He stated, “Mr. Dudley hauled Roan Queen out to Semotan’s one time behind a car and nearly Monsieur Jo e winning o ne of his Ch wrecked. performance points. She was an AQHA Champion, Superior Halter Horse and an AQHA Youth World Show top ten finalist in 1978 and 1979. Starlita Creek was a 1959 daughter of Beaver Creek and out of Mischief Star. She was an AQHA Champion and a Superior halter horse. She earned 109 AQHA halter points and 14 performance points. Beaver Creek was a son of King P-234 and he was out of Stifle by Billy Sunday.

Acre recalled Miss Monsieur and one win in particular, “Dee Burke took her and she was the High Point Roping Mare. He carried her throughout the south in the winter and they had a quarter horse show at the Louisiana State University and she won the all around down there. She was one of our foundation mares.” Miss Monsieur was the dam of four AQHA point earners. They include Missy Joetta Bar with 11 halter points. The sire of this mare was Rapid Bar by Three Bars. Rapid Bar introduces several stallions that have ties to Reed Hill of Haggins, Texas. The other stallions were Dick Sonoita and Julio’s Bar. As you will see a number of foals in this review will be sired by these three stallions. The next performer out of Miss Monsieur was Vallerina Miss and what a performer she was. This mare was the 1975 AQHA High Point Halter Horse and the 1975 AQHA Youth High Point Halter Mare. She was the 1975 AQHA World Champion Aged Mare and the 1975 AQHA Youth World Champion Aged Mare. She was Superior in youth halter, open halter and open western pleasure. She was an Open and Youth AQHA Champion. Two Eyed Jack was her sire. This mare introduces Two Eyed Jack and Howard Pitzer to the Dudley and Acre breeding program. Acre felt that Two Eyed Jack was a “genetic freak” in that he was better than both his sire and dam. The Two Eyed Jack cross on the Roan Queen mares proved to be a very successful cross producing their own genetic “freaks” as we label many of our great horses. Miss Vallerina by Two Eyed Jack was the next performer out of Miss Monsieur. This mare was an AQHA Champion with 25 halter points, 42 performance points and three youth Page 28
Starlita Creek was like Miss Monseiur in that she became a noted producer in the Dudley broodmare band. She was the dam of Jackie Creek by Two Eyed Jack. Jackie Creek was an Open and Youth AQHA Champion. This mare earned 34 open halter points, 28 open performance points, 32 youth halter points and 57 youth performance points. She earned open and youth ROM’s.
Starlita Jackie was a full sister to Jackie Creek. This mare was an AQHA Champion and Superior Halter Horse. She earned 68 open halter points, 31 open performance points and 3 youth halter points. Starlita’s Jack was a full brother to these two mares. He was an ROM performer with 16 open points and 23 youth points. The fourth point earner out of Starlita Creek was Starlita Sonoita, a mare by Dick Sonoita. She earned her ROM with 2 open halter points, 33 open performance points and 21 youth performance points. Tagalong Missy is a 1962 daughter of Mischief Star and Leo Tag by Leo. This cross is interesting because Dee Burke, who showed Miss Monsieur to her roping high point award, owned Leo Tag. Tagalong Missy was unshown. She was the dam of five point and/or money earners. Her leading point earner was Tagalong Jackie by Two Eyed Jack. This mare was an AQHA Reserve World Champion Aged Mare in 1972. She was Superior in open western pleasure and youth western pleasure. She was a Youth AQHA Champion. She earned 15 open halter points, 56 open performance points, 48 youth halter points and 229 youth performance points. Reno Tag was a son of Three Chicks and out of Tagalong Missy. He was an ROM racehorse with a speed index of 80. Gallant Tag by Gallant Jet and out of Tagalong Missy was another ROM racehorse. He had a speed index of 87. The last two performers out of this mare were NCHA money winners. They were Docs Missy Val and Squirman Herman. Docs Missy Val was the winner of $10,366 in the NCHA with a Certificate of Ability. Win Your DREAM HORSE With a small donation you could be the lucky winner of a registered two year old Quarter Horse with six months of professional training. The Beau Arndt Foundation, in keeping with the ideals and beliefs of Beau Arndt, will hand over the reins and registration papers to a lucky winner this coming September. The board members came up with the idea to have Bob Arndt, with twenty five years of horse training experience, do the training. They also agreed to have a yearly DREAM HORSE fund-raiser, with the lucky ticket drawn at the annual Beau Arndt Outdoor Appreciation Day. Beau grew up northwest of Americus, Kansas. His passions were everything outdoors, which included horses, hunting, fishing, camping, swimming, and playing baseball. He wanted to live in Canada and become a big-game guide, using horses to help other hunters in their quest. Another great talent Beau possessed was his ability to help people and to make them laugh. He delighted in taking younger kids hunting, showing them how to throw a ball, and leading them around on a horse. On December 15, 2007, Beau was killed by a road hunter. Beau and two friends were goose hunting on a neighbor’s land when the road hunter shot into the decoys .The bullet ended Beau’s life and his ambitions as well as shocking the community. Beau had no enemies, everyone was a friend. His life on earth ended three days before his 19th birthday and twelve hours after completing his first semester at Emporia State University. He told his dad, Bob, several times, “I got everything worked out. You taught me how to train and shoe horses, and with a degree in business and biology, you and Mom can come visit me in Canada and help me build my lodge.” Within months of Beau’s death, the non-profit Beau Arndt Foundation was created to continue with the ideals Beau felt important: to help children and their families learn to enjoy the outdoors safely. This has become the Foundation’s mission. The DREAM HORSE fund-raiser idea sprang from a few memories of Beau and his horses Doc and Faith. One memory was the love he showed for animals when Doc came down with severe colic. The vet gave Doc no chance of survival. It was only with Beau’s pleading and making Doc walk for hours did Doc finally recover to his former self. The vet was amazed that Doc had even made t through the night. But that is how much passion Beau had for animals. A few weeks after the colic incident, Beau, Bob, and a horse training customer were riding in a pasture, when Beau said he was going on over the hill to the pond. A few minutes later Bob and the other rider crested the hill and saw Doc standing chest deep in the water, cooling off in the hot July sun. Beau was standing on Doc’s hip, preparing to leap into the water, using his old friend Doc as a diving board. The horse training customer was astounded that Doc would stand patiently in the water and let Beau jump off him. After a few dives, Beau had cooled off, got on Doc and rode over and with a big grin asked if anybody wanted to get cooled off. During the fall and winter, Beau or sometimes he and friends would saddle up and ride pastures or to the river and be gone for hours. He said being on a horse was the best way to scout for game for the up-coming hunting seasons. To Beau, that was how life was to be lived. Being on a horse with friends, having fun, and enjoying the outdoors, no matter what the elements might bring. Page 36

Last month we looked at the history of the Y Ranch and how this historic ranch played a role in the development of the Copperbottom bloodline that came down through Golden Chief. We learned how C. T. Herring brought Golden Chief into the scheme of things in his ranching operations and how R. L. Underwood took Golden Chief, Dexter and a number of mares from the Y Ranch to form his breeding program that went on to produce such famous horses as Cutter Bill and Smutty Bill. When we left off in our look at the Y Ranch and Golden Chief we had just introduced Jim Scuddy as the manager of the BurgessHerring Ranch. Scuddy was raised in Alpine, Texas and has been involved with horses most of his life. Scuddy began his career breaking horses and his philosophy about horse training has been influenced by the late Ray Hunt, the great horse communicator. Scuddy talked about his career this way, “In 1982 I was breaking a bunch of mules south of Dryden, Texas and four or five of us were riding some colts and wanting to do it right. Spring work was just starting and I had gone to Alpine and picked up a boy to help and he had just gone to a Ray Hunt Clinic.”

Scuddy continued, “He was telling me how Hunt would get on those horses without a halter and all that. But I was the world’s biggest skeptic. So I told him to get on one of those mules we were breaking. He wouldn’t do it. Well that boy was Cody Crider and he went to the King Ranch later on after Joe Stiles left.” Scuddy then added, “He wouldn’t get on without anything on his head and I was starting horses and those mules the old fashioned way. Back then we would get on with a snaffle bit or hackamore and if they blew up we would pull on their face as hard as we could. Well I went to that Ray Hunt Clinic the next year and like everybody else I went to sit up there in the stands and pick it apart. Well in about 10 minutes into the clinic I was on the edge of my seat because there was something to it.” Page 38
Scuddy found himself becoming a Hunt believer, “I really got into it and started breaking colts that way. Then I went to work for Ken Welch and Helen Groves at the Silverbrook Farms in Virginia.” Ken is the son of legendary trainer Buster Welch and Helen Groves is the daughter of Robert J. Kleberg Jr. of the King Ranch.” “Then I went to California for a couple of years and kind of got interested in the snaffle bitters. Then went back to Texas and I had always gone to the NCHA Futurity to find some horses to start. Well that year I talked to Joe Stiles and they were looking for someone to contract to start colts on the ranch. He also mentioned that the Parker Ranch in Hawaii was looking for someone to start colts. They had just bought a Little Peppy stud. I was young and single at the time and I was trying to figure out how to get it all done.” THE WORKING HORSE • FEBRUARY 2010

“I worked out a deal to work at the King Ranch and then about June 1st, I went to the Parker Ranch. That was like a kid in a candy store for me. I have been blessed to be able to start as many good horses as I have.” Jim’s resume including working for Ken Welch at Helen Groves’ Silverbrook Farms in Virginia to time with the King Ranch of Texas and the Parker Ranch in Hawaii gives him an interesting set of credentials. His King Ranch experience allowed him to work with the offspring of Mr San Peppy and Peppy San Badger. He started the legendary cutting mare Little Tenina, NCHA Open Futurity and NCHA Open Derby Champion. She was a daughter of Peppy San Badger. When Scuddy arrived at the Burgess-Herring Ranch he found a rich history of this ranch and the legacy left behind by horses like Golden Chief. The sad part of this is the fact that Golden Chief was a ranch sire that was reported to have sired over 300 foals and we don’t have any records to profile his success as a ranch sire. The key is without breeding records available, we don’t know how many of his sons and daughters were used on the Herring Ranches, but we must assume that they are the foundation of the pedigrees for the Burgess Herring Ranch horses of the past. Many of Golden Chief’s known contributions to the breed come through his registered foals in the AQHA that came after he left the Y Ranch. He sired horses like Seal Brown, Top Flight, Little Chuck, Dexter and many fine mares that carried his ranch success into the AQHA record books. Seal Brown was a 1938 son of Golden Chief that went to the Pitchfork Land And Cattle Company. The official Pitchfork Land and Cattle Company website gives Seal Brown as a foundation sire for the ranch. They state that Seal Brown “was the first quarter horse purchased by Pitchfork manager, Rudolph Swenson in 1941. This stallion produced an outstanding herd of broodmares.”
Playguns Desire is a daughter of Playgun. This mare was the 2001 Brazos Bash Open Derby Champion. She in turn is passing her strong genes to her foals Reys Desire and Desire Rey, both born in 2006. Reys Desire finished sixth in the 2009 NCHA Open Futurity and Desire Rey finished sixth in the 2009 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. The sire of Reys Desire and Desire Rey is the stallion Dual Rey. Dual Rey was the winner of $105,038 in cutting. He was an NCHA Futurity and NCHA Derby Finalist. He was sired by Dual Pep by Peppy San Badger. Peppy San Badger was the 1977 NCHA Open Futurity and 1978 NCHA Open Derby Champion. He is an NCHA Hall of Fame winner.
The daughters of Seal Brown that have produced AQHA show records include Miss Seal 11, dam of an ROM arena horse in Bay Seal; Minnie Bee L, was the dam of an ROM arena horse in Bee Hank; Miss Seal 22, was the dam of the arena ROM Chacta King, Miss Seal 4, was the dam of the AA ROM race mare Miss Seal’s Girl and Pitch Fork Gal was the dam of Miller’s Mendy, a Superior Cutting Horse with 75 AQHA performance points. Miss Seal 20 was a 1947 daughter of Seal Brown. This mare has made a major impact on the modern cutting horse through a mare named Miss Silver Pistol. Miss Silver Pistol was out of Pistol Lady 2 Be, who was out of Miss Bailey 24, who was out of Miss Seal 20 by Seal Brown. Miss Silver Pistol was the 1985 NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Champion and the 1986 NCHA Non-Pro Super Stakes Reserve Co-Champion. She won $512,755.49. Miss Silver Pistol has gone from the arena to the broodmare band to become a noted producer of several very influential horses. Her foals have earned $421,804.53. Her son Playgun earned $183,538.49 while earning aged event titles like the dual championship of the Augusta Open Futurity and Non-Pro Futurity in 1996. Playgun is the sire of horses that have won over $6,528,733.49. His big money winners include Mr Beaman, 2001 NCHA Open Futurity Reserve Champion and Peppys Play For Cash, 2003 NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro Champion. PG Dry Fire was the 2006 NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman Reserve Champion with Robbie Boyce in the saddle. Page 44

Sugar Badger was a top producer for Joe Kirk Fulton and his great performance-breeding program. She was the dam of several noted show horses including the great mare Honey K Bar. She was an AQHA Champion with 265 halter points, 45 cutting points and 12.5 pleasure points. Dual Rey is having a banner year as the sire of the NCHA Open Futurity Champion in Rockin W and the NRCHA Open Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion Reymanator. Reymanator not only has ties to the Y Ranch on the top of his pedigree, but also on the bottom side of his pedigree. His dam is Savannah Hickory. This mare is out of Savannah White, who is out of White On Right. Freckles Deb is the dam of White On Right. Freckles Deb is out of Debra Zero, who is out of Peggy O’Grady. The Red Peggy family through Savannah Hickory has produced some major winners. Savannah White was an Augusta Futurity Non-Pro Reserve Champion with earnings of $164,265.21. She is the dam of Capuccino And Pasta, winner of $155,522.12 and Justanotherwhiteboy, winner of $120,328.14. The Savannah White foals have earned in excess of $615,958.95. Brother White was the 2003 AQHA World Champion Senior Working Cowhorse. Chiquita Pistol set the world on fire in 2002 and 2003. She became just the third horse to become an NCHA Open Triple Crown winner. She won the NCHA Open Futurity, NCHA Open Super Stakes and the NCHA Open Derby. She earned $550,909.98. Chiquita Pistol is sired by Smart Little Pistol, a son of Miss Silver Pistol. Chiquita Pistol is the dam of Chiquita Cat, a 2009 NCHA Open Futurity Finalist.
them. Texas Fizz and Snap’s Last were the other two. Jan’s Juanita was the dam of the arena ROM performer Juan Sweet and Toppy II was the dam of Taylor Son, another arena ROM performer. Wimpess Model was the dam of the AQHA Champion and ROM performer Supreme Model. Roan Queen was a daughter of Top Flight. She was the foundation mare for Warren Dudley of Osborne, Kansas back in the mid 1940’s. This breeding program is known today as the Dudley and Acre Ranch. Roan Queen became the dam of the AQHA Champions Kansas Duster and Sonny Star Duster. But it is through her daughters that she has proven to be a true “blue hen” mare.
Top Flight is another 1938 son of Golden Chief. He was the sire of one ROM arena performer in Flight’s Pride. Top Flight is much like Seal Brown in that his contributions to the Golden Chief influence was through his daughters. His daughters Amiga and Chocletto were both producers of racing ROM. Amiga produced Amiga’s Bar and Chocletto was the dam of Oscar.
The mares out of Roan Queen include Mischief Star, Margie Star, Lady Monsieur, Bay Queen Jo, Bobbye Monsieur and Cindy Creek. All of these mares have made a contribution to the Roan Queen family with ROM, AQHA Champions, Superior Performers and Superior Halter Horses, High Point Horses and World Champions. The list of Champions from this mare’s family include Vallerina Miss, 1975 AQHA World Champion Aged Mare; Tagalong Jackie, 1972 AQHA Youth Reserve World Champion Aged Mare; The Dallas Cowboy, 1978 AQHA World Champion Aged Stallion and Mr Oakie Scotch, 1992 AQHA Amateur Reserve All Around High Point Horse.
Sis Flight by Top Flight is the dam of two AQHA ROM arena performers in Lady Van Flight and Miss Van Flight. Lady Van Flight is an AQHA Superior Halter Horse. Susie Lue is the dam of the AQHA Champion Texas Fizz. Her foal Snap’s Last is an AQHA Superior Performer. She was the dam of four ROM arena performers and Bill’s Tequila and Little Red Diablo two
Zippo Pat Bars was an AAA rated son of Three Bars and out of the mare Leo Pat by Leo. Leo Pat was out of the Dunny Girl, a 1945 buckskin mare sired by Little Chuck. Little Chuck was sired by Golden Chief. An interesting thing about Little Chuck is that he sired only two registered foals. One of them was Dunny Girl.

But over the years the Burgess-Herring Ranch has worked to maintain its remuda using the bloodlines of both the working lines and the running lines of quarter horses. Some of the stallions used in the breeding program include Docs Busy, grandson of Smart Little Lena and CW Mr Newton, a grandson of the great racing stallion Alamitos Bar. They have also incorporated such horses as Strait Silver and Playgun into the breeding program. C. C. Burgess explains how the latest adventure to bring the blood of Golden Chief back into the program got its start, “Early on Jimmy Scuddy and I talked about the Copperbottom bloodlines. And I felt that we owed it to C. T. Herring to reintroduce the Copperbottom bloodlines into our ranch remuda. So our original plan was to get a stud and breed him to a select group of mares.”

Zippo Pat Bars was the sire of many fine foals but is best known as the sire of the legendary pleasure sires Zippo Pine Bar and The Invester. Zippo Pat Bars and his sons Zippo Pine Bar and The Invester are members of the AQHA Hall of Fame and the NSBA Hall of Fame for their influence on the modern pleasure horse. The second most important stallion in the perpetuation of the Copperbottom horses was Dexter by Golden Chief. Dexter was bred on the Y Ranch and L. K. Johnson is listed as his breeder. He was foaled in 1936. Dexter was the sire of one AQHA ROM racehorse in Billie Joe Dexter. His arena ROM would include Brown Bob Dexter, Chick Dexter, Red Bubbles Dexter, Romeo Dexter and Shy Lou. The daughters of Dexter were the producers of AQHA Champions, Superior halter horses and high point award winners. The produce of his daughters includes the AQHA Champions Dido Reed, Flo Silvertone, Sutherland’s Ready Cash, Poco Merit, Bee Jay Cody and Peppy Blue Chip. His daughter Scuttles Dexter was the dam of Dexter Dee, the 1963 AQHA High Point Barrel Racing Mare. The Dexter mare Fiddle Dexter was the dam of Bay Fiddle, an AQHA Superior Halter Mare. Miss Dexter by Dexter was the dam of Lassie Caesar. Lassie Caesar was an ROM racehorse and dam of Lassie’s Dream, the 1955 AQHA American Quarter Running Champion Two-YearOld Filly. Lassie’s Dream was the dam of the AAA rated AQHA Champion Magnolia Bar. Magnolia Bar was the sire of the AQHA Supreme Champion Magnolia Pay. Now back to today. The Burgess-Herring Ranch system is a working ranch operation with the Burgess-Y Ranch at Paducah and the Burgess-Herring Ranch at Stinnett still active and in need of good ranch horses just as they have since Col. Herring started in the early years. But like any breeding program that has been in existence for so many years, the original blood was pretty well depleted and all but gone. Page 52
But instead of one stud they have two in Cutters Blake Junior and Triple Cutter Bill. They also have several mares with these bloodlines that were incorporated into the program from Harold Goatcher. They are Cutter Angel, Genies Yellow Rose, Royales Royal Cutter and Pluma De Nieve.
With the introduction of all these horses the concept has grown and Scuddy explains what they are finding with the reintroduction of these foundation bloodlines, “This project has taken on a life of it’s own. This is the first year that we have started a bunch of two year olds out of Cutter’s Blake Junior and Triple Cutter Bill and for ranch horses they are nice. But it gets back to the old foundation bloodlines. They are easy to start and they want to go do something.” “These Cutter Bill colts are fun to ride. As I said they want to do right. They want to do what you ask. But they have a good laid-back attitude about it. But they are cowy and athletic. It’s not like pulling on a post, they want to work. “This is a working ranch and we do lots of ranch work and they are showing that they are going to be a nice horse to go do that. This is our goal to make ranch using horses, rope horses, team penners, ranch versatility horses that excel in these areas and they give every indication they will fit into that goal.” Burgess is also very pleased about how the plan is working, “Well Jimmy is particular about doing things right and I can tell it is working as every time I talk to him, he brags about how those Copperbottom or Cutter Bill colts are breaking out. He has found that they just naturally change leads when you first get on them and he understands why people liked this bloodline.” Cutters Blake Junior was the stallion that was picked to fulfill the need for a Cutter Bill/Copperbottom bred stallion. He was bred by Foster Lee Wilcox of Hamilton, Texas. He is owned by Harold and Gena Lea Goatcher. The sire of Cutters Blake Junior was Cutter’s Blake a son of Cutter Bill. The dam of Cutter’s Blake was Hollywood Betsy by Hollywood Gold by Gold Rush. Gold Rush was a former Y Ranch stallion that came from Tom L. Burnett’s Triangle Ranch. Continued on page 56...

The dam of Cutters Blake Junior was Royal Cutters Lady. This mare was sired by Tony Royal Jazz. Tony Royal Jazz was sired by Royal King, the great sire of cutting horses. The dam of Royal Cutters Lady was Cutter’s Sunburst by Cutter Bill. Cutter’s Sunburst is the dam of Docs Sunburst, a 1982 Augusta Futurity finalist and she is the dam of SR Doctor Sunburst, who is the sire of Hes A Missouri Doc with NCHA earnings of $306,875.75. This gives Cutters Blake Junior a 2 X 3 breeding pattern to Cutter Bill.
is the dam of three performers including Good Looking Man, who is ROM in the Arena. He has 61 AQHA points in open, amateur and youth divisions and the points come in western pleasure, trail, western riding and showmanship. Cutter’s Girl is a daughter of Cutter’s Sweetie. She is the dam of two NCHA Certificate of Ability winners in Cutter’s Surprise and Ms Cutter B Lemac. When we combine the Cutter Bill blood in Cutters Blake Junior and Cutter’s Sweetie, we get a breeding pattern of 3 X 4 X 3 to Cutter Bill.
Cutter’s Sunburst was a full sister to Cutter’s Willie, the 1972 AQHA High Point Junior Cutting Horse and Bills Will Power, an NCHA Certificate of Ability winner and AQHA ROM cutting horse. The dam of Cutters Sunburst was Willful Miss. She is a daughter of King P-234. She is also the dam of the stallion Aledo Bar. Aledo Bar was the sire of three AQHA High Point Halter Horses in Aledo’s Bar Lady, Aledolita Bar and Lady Gaines.
Lindo Wimpy was the dam of Cutter’s Sweetie. This mare was sired by Wimpy P-1. Wimpy P-1 was a successful sire with horses like his son Bill Cody. Bill Cody was the first horse to be the AQHA Honor Roll or as we call it today the first AQHA High Point Halter Horse. He was a great sire in his own right siring the likes of Joe Cody, an AQHA Hall of Fame member.
Triple Cutter Bill was the second stallion tabbed for use in the new breeding program. He was sired by Cutters Blake Junior. The dam of Triple Cutter Bill was Nickis Angel by Little Johnny Bars. She was out of Cutter’s Sweetie. Little Johnny Bars was an unshown stallion and sired only 16 foals. His sire was Johnny Bars by Sugar Bars. The dam of Johnny Bars was Figure 8 Bearcat by Leo. Johnny Bars had a speed index of 100. He won 8 of his 12 starts on the racetrack. He was ROM in the arena as well.
Lindo Wimpy was the dam of Lady Cutter Bill. She in turn was the dam of Ladys Little Dude, who earned 114 PHBA halter and performance points. Lindo Ace was the dam of Lindo Wimpy. Lindo Ace was the dam of Streak’s Lindo, who was the dam of Skipa Lindy Streak, 1981 AQHA World Champion Two-Year-Old Stallion. Cutters Blake Junior and Triple Cutter Bill are being bred to the ranch mares. The bloodlines for these mares include daughters and granddaughters of Playgun, CW Mr Newton, Lone Roan Wolf, Mindtrap and Strait Silver. The picture of the

The mares that came from the Goatcher’s were Cutter Angel, a full sister of Triple Cutter Bill and Genies Yellow Rose, a ¾ sister to Triple Cutter Bill. Genies Yellow Rose was sired by Cutter’s Blake. The next mare is Royales Royal Cutter. This mare is out of Cutter’s Goldigger. Her sire is Royales Royal King. She was also bred by Foster Lee Wilcox. Another mare in this group is Pluma De Nieve. This cremello mare is sired by Cutter’s Blake by Cutter Bill and out of Cutter’s Goldigger by Cutter Bill. This makes her 2 X 2 inbred to Cutter Bill. The dam of Cutter’s Goldigger was Quarters Doll, a full sister to Hoppen, the 1963 NCHA World Champion Cutting Horse. Pluma De Nieve has been bred to Docs Busy to produce a filly named Billie Y Busy. To see video on this mare and Burgess-Herring horses as well as Jim’s training methods you can go to the ranch website. http:// www.burgessherringranch.net. It is interesting to note that this program is bringing back the ranch’s foundation bloodlines using modern technology to promote the program giving everyone an opportunity to see first hand how it is working. It was through research for this web page that Jim Scuddy really began to focus on the Copperbottom bred horses through Golden Chief and this helped him develop his appreciation for this bloodline and the men that used them.
During our conversation, Jim Scudday recalled as a young man making the observation that it was “the good hands that rode the good horses.” The reason for this was their ability to properly select and handle the horses they rode. They were good horseman. He then reflected about the men that were cowboys on the Y Ranch and the Herring Ranch during the years that the Copperbottom’s through Golden Chief were the horses they used. He noted these men were good hands that rode good horses as good horses are a necessity on the ranch and they wouldn’t be there if they didn’t work. Jim Scuddy is now on the road that these early horseman traveled and he is riding some colts that come from that past and he likes what he sees and is experiencing. The Golden Chief’s are back on the Burgess Y Ranch and the BurgessHerring Ranch. Maybe this time for good and that is going to keep this bloodline alive and well. A dream is coming true.
The pedigree of Docs Busy brings in another tie to the Golden Chief blood. His sire is Lenas Busy Bee by Smart Little Lena. This stallion is out of Prissy Bea by Brigand. Brigand is out of Blond Joan, who is out of Lassie Caesar, the daughter of Miss Dexter. By the way Miss Dexter is a full sister to Top Flight that we profiled above. An added note: Although the blood of Zippo Pat Bars is touted as superior western pleasure horses, Jim n Queen sire of the Blue Hen Mare Roa Scudday is currently showing in ranch Top Flight by Golden Chief and cutting a son of Docs Busy that carries l of Fame and Museum Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hal the blood Zippo Pat Bars in his dam’s pedigree. The five year old is named Zip To It Doc by Docs Busy. The dam of this horse is Zips Smooth Lady, who is out of Zips Poco Playgirl by Pretty Boy Zip. Pretty Boy Zip is a son of Zippo Pat Bars (a descendant of Golden Larry Thornton is a pedigree analyst and breeding Chief through Little Chuck). The number of stallions to be used on the ranch is growing and thus the Cutter Bill/Golden Chief mares could be bred to several stallions. The current stallion roster includes Docs Busy, Lone Roan Wolf (a Two Eyed Jack stallion), Two Nic and Cheys Pistol. Two Nic is a son of Reminic and his dam is a daughter of Two Eyed Jack. Cheys Pistol is sired by Play Per View, a son of Playgun (with his Y Ranch ties) and out of Kendalls Cupcake by Dox Skin Flynt by Freckles Flynt. . Page 60
