Welcome all our Red Angus friends! What an exciting time it is to be in the livestock industry! Demand for quality genetics is getting stronger and Red Angus feeder calves and replacement heifers are no longer taking backseat to black-hided cattle. Demand for U.S. beef continues to grow as cow inventories remain at World War II numbers and global demand for protein continues to rise. Cull cows and bulls are bringing record prices and ranchers are taking advantage of leaning their herd of older age or problematic cows as well as aging bulls. For example, with packers paying around $1.24 on the rail for cull cows, heavier weight cows weighing 1300 pounds bring up to $1000 (2200 pound bulls will bring close to $1700). I anticipate ranchers will take advantage of these prices by replacing older bulls with young bulls with improved genetics into (Left to right) Cody, Glen, Diane, Jessica and Chad Halfmann their herd. Bulls provide 50% of the genetics in your calf-crop and by improving just the bulls can make the greatest cost effective impact on your bottom-line. Herd Health: All animals have been tested negative for BVD PI. All animals are current on vaccinations of “Triangle 9 + Type II BVD” and “Vision 7 Somnus with SPUR”. All females of age are calf-hood vaccinated. All the bulls will have a general health and fertility examination by sale day. Breeding information will be available on sale day. “Reflection on the Past Year” This past year has been an enlightening time as I learned what “Let Go, Let God” really meant. In October 2009, I was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDSpreleukemia) when routine lab work in the early spring of 2009 showed my blood counts were low. Friends and family encouraged me to visit MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. The oncologist there recommended a bone marrow transplant as the most successful treatment to beat the MDS. In April 2010, I entered MDA and started treatment and received the transplant April 23rd.. Clifford, my brother, was the donor for the transplant and Jessica, my daughter, donated NK (natural killer) cells for an experimental protocol. After 17 weeks in Houston, Diane and I returned home. As of now, lab results are favorable and I will continue to be monitored for any rejection. It was through the Power of Prayer from family, friends, business associates and people I do not even know that I have found comfort and resolve in whatever God’s choice will be for me. I take time now in this reflection to thank all

FOCUSING ON THE BOTTOM LINE Profit has two sides to the equation, Income & Expense. For many years, some cattlemen have concentrated on how to maximize income, while not paying attention to expense. When times get tough, as we are currently experiencing, businesses of all industries tend to become more efficient and focus on reducing expenses. The Red Angus Association recognized this early on and developed unbiased scientific methods to measure economically relevant traits to help cattlemen become more efficient. The most economically relevant traits are Calving Ease Direct (CED), Birth-weight (BW), Maintenance Energy (ME) and Stayability. BW is highly correlated to mature cow size; use of lower birth-weight bulls on cows is the surest way to keep moderate-sized cows. Complete information on EPDs is available in the “Rancher’s Guide to EPDs”. THE IMPACT OF BIRTHWEIGHT & CALVING-EASE The foundation of animal breeding is fertility and calf survival. Without cows breeding up and weaning a calf every year, producers will incur an economic loss. By introducing practices such as set breeding seasons and pregnancy checking, producers can become more efficient by eliminating cows that do not breed up and calve every year (eliminating the cost of carrying open cows). A residual benefit to having a calving season is having more uniform groups of calves that can be managed and marketed together. Also, using lower birth-weight, calving-ease bulls that have good weaning and yearling weights will insure a higher percentage of weaned calves and more total pounds of calves weaned. For example, suppose you use a higher birth-weight bull that adds 20

My wife, Diane, was the patient caregiver and always there with a positive attitude and a caring heart. Cody’s life was totally engulfed with keeping our livelihood going … cattle operation, crops and the ag business. Chad supported Cody after hours from his job and is now helping full-time. Jessica returned to Houston several times to give support when we needed it. In reflecting on my experience with serious illness this year, I urge each of you to not wait for sickness or other trials to realize what gifts in life God has already given you. Please take the time each day to give thanks for His many blessings and if you find yourself upon difficult times remember to “Let Go, Let God.”

USING EPDS & RATIOS A common misconception is that EPDs will tell us which animal of several being compared is ‘best’. EPDs are merely a description of each animal’s genetic make-up. It is up to us to determine which animal is best for us. Selecting for single traits is not always the most effective choice. When selecting a bull, take into consideration all traits that are relevant for your program. By correctly using EPDs, we can each determine which animal best fits our programs, or moves them in a direction we want to go. Ratios are used for comparing within a single contemporary group. Selecting between contemporary groups with actual or adjusted data can be inaccurate and could lead to selection or culling errors! Performance measurements such as growth and marbling may vary greatly between contemporary groups depending on how they are managed and fed. For example, grain-fed animals are more likely to have higher marbling scores than forage-fed animals. However, forage-fed animals may be genetically capable of producing higher marbling scores, but are not fed high-grain rations for other management reasons. When selecting within a contemporary group, ratios are useful in comparing an individual’s performance over others.

Guest Consignor – MALLETT SIMMENTALS Mallett Simmentals of Lampasas, Texas is owned and operated by Mike and Connie Mallett of Lampasas, Texas. The registered operation, which began in 1989, currently consists of 115 Simmental and SimAngus cows. Their program’s focus is on performance and carcass traits, without sacrificing maternal characteristics. They collect ultrasound and carcass data on all bulls and heifers. Enrollment in ASA’s Carcass Merit Project has strengthened the carcass emphasis of their program. Mr. Mallett is currently serving his second term as a trustee for the American Simmental Association and serves on the executive committee. A member of TSCRA and NCBA, Mike has participated in BIF meetings, in addition to attending the annual TAMU Beef Cattle Shortcourse, where he recently addressed traits for bull selection, with emphasis on calving ease, growth, and carcass.

Offering about 17 fancy open heifers. High percentage Red Angus x Hereford will be represented. These females are vaccinated, BVD-PI tested and will be ready to breed by sale day. EPDs: Expected Progeny Difference –How an animal’s future progeny will perform compared to the progeny performance of the average animals in the breed, assuming similar environments and matings of the same genetic value. Terms & Conditions BIDDING DISPUTES: The Auctioneer will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final. TERMS: Terms of sale are cash. All settlements will be made with the clerks of the sale immediately following the conclusion of the sale and before any cattle will be released. PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the Buyer as soon as sold. Insurance will be available sale day. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: A certificate of registry will be furnished to the Buyer for each animal, after settlement has been made. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Changes or errors of information contained in this catalog relating to the animals offered for sale will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence over printed matter in the catalog. BREEDING GUARANTEE: All animals sold are guaranteed breeders by the Seller. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing within six months of the sale date. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the purchaser may return the animal to the ranch of the seller if in good condition, free of disease and complying with the health requirements of the Seller’s state. The Seller will be entitled to six months trial following the return of the animal in which to prove that the animal is a breeder. animals are guaranteed to be breeders, with the exception of: a) calves under twelve months of age; or b) animals shown by Purchaser after sale; or c) gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the Purchaser. SELLER’S SEMEN RIGHTS: Seller keeps a 50% revenue-sharing breeding interest without possession, in every bull in this catalog unless otherwise noted in this catalog or in the sale day supplement. In the event Seller elects to collect semen from a designated bull, it will be done at Seller’s expense and during such time when purchaser is not using the bull for breeding. Future semen collections of the bull must be made known to all owners prior to collecting. These collections and costs will be divided according to each owner’s interest, unless otherwise agreed upon mutually by all owners.
