STRENGTHENING THE BREED THROUGH INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION
S Dr. Clint Rusk Executive Vice President

CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
and Freddie Wasserfall, President of the Charolais Society of South Africa. Prior to the AICA Board meetings, David and Tim planned a two-day trip for our international guests to visit Agricultural businesses and Charolais breeders in Kentucky. Tim Hughes and Floyd Wampler from AICA served as tour guides. Through personal communication, the international guests raved about the two-day tour and all the sites they saw and people they met. Following the Kentucky tour, the international guests attended the NAILE where they watched the Charolais Junior Heifer Show and other breeds of cattle being exhibited. The international visitors seemed pleased with the quality and variety of the cattle they saw at the NAILE. The AICA Fall Board meetings started on Sunday, November 12 at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center. After a visit to Churchill Downs on Sunday morning, the international guests attended several of the AICA committee meetings on Sunday afternoon. During the Breed Improvement committee meeting, both Colin Rex and Craig Scott offered comments that led to further discussion and positive results. One of the agenda items was an open discussion of updating the formula used to calculate Terminal Sire Index (TSI) for the AICA. Craig Scott spoke up and said the Canadian Charolais Association (CCA) is discussing adding TSI to their genomic evaluation. As a result of Craig’s input, the AICA and the CCA may work together to determine a formula for calculating a TSI for each association. Other positive results from inviting international Charolais guests to the 2023 NAILE and the Fall 2023 AICA Board meetings: 1) Fourhundred units of Charolais semen sold to one of the international guests. 2) The international exchange described above led to discussion about inviting international attendees to Charolais events scheduled in 2024. 3) If the article above sparked your interest you may want to check out the 2024 World Charolais Congress to be held in Canada the last week in June and the first week in July. The Canadians are planning to entertain their international guests from Niagara Falls to the Calgary Stampede.

... COLIN REX AND CRAIG SCOTT OFFERED COMMENTS THAT LED TO FURTHER DISCUSSION AND POSITIVE RESULTS.
ince coming to the AICA in November of 2021, I have had numerous opportunities to travel to other countries to meet Charolais breeders, view Charolais cattle and become friends with Charolais breed execs. In the January 2023 edition of the Charolais Journal, I made the following statement in my Viewpoint article, “strengthening industry relations by traveling to other countries, building personal relationships, and conducting joint genetic evaluations will lay the groundwork for an increase in International Trade……. which goes in both directions! This past April, David Hobbs and I flew to the Czech Republic to participate in the World Charolais Technical Conference. During this trip, we met Charolais breeders and viewed Charolais cattle in a country neither of us had ever been to. Because this was a Technical Conference, we spent several days interacting with Charolais breed execs from all over the world. In some cases, we renewed relationships with breed execs we met in the summer of 2022 during the World Charolais Congress held in the UK. In other cases, we met breed execs for the very first time. In both cases, David and I benefitted from strengthening previous relationships and building on new ones. Continuing the theme of international collaboration, David Hobbs, current chair of the U.S. Livestock Genetics Export, Inc. (USLGE) and Tim Hughes, Senior Trade Advisor for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, and a member of the USLGE, worked together to organize a visit for seven Charolais execs from four countries to travel to Louisville, KY to take part in the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) and the Fall AICA Board meetings. The international guests included: Candice and Helge By, owners of the Charolais Banner in Canada, Craig Scott, General Manager of the Canadian Charolais Association, Arnulfo de la Garza Montemayor, Secretary of the Charolais Charbray Herd Book of Mexico Board of Directors, and Marcos Gonzalez Pedroza, Charolais and Charbray breeder from Mexico, Colin Rex, General Manager of The Charolais Society of Australia,

American-International
CHAROLAIS Association
The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.

DNA Update
Effective January 1, 2024, all 100K DNA kits ordered through the office or submitted online will be billed to the breeder’s account at the time of kit requests. The same will apply to the add on tests for BPA and Horned/Polled. In making this change, we are hoping to increase the efficiency of the process and cut down on the requests for multiple kits ordered on animals. This change should also result in a more accurate expected count of samples arriving at the lab. If any corrections or changes on kit requests need to be made, please contact the AICA Registration Department before sample submission to the lab.
Export Your Data for Sale Catalogs
If an animal needs to be registered with in a day or two a rush fee of $75 ($150 non members) will be added to work. We also offer FedEx mailing for additional $75 ($150 non members).
Enter Weight Data Online. Log in with your breeder number and password. Hold your cursor on the “my performance” tab. Members with enrolled females can enter weaning and yearling weights from the animal list. We offer both individual entry and list entry. Shade Bunker Vice President
i everyone! My name is Shade Bunker, and I am your AIJCA Junior Board Vice President. I was born and raised in Sparta, WI, where my family owns and operates J&A Charolais. I am currently in my sophomore year at Iowa State University, double majoring in Agricultural Business and Economics. It’s hard to believe, but 2024 is the start of my fourth year serving on the Junior Charolais Board of Directors! Throughout my life, I have strived to live by one word – “fearless.” Whether that be through fierce competition in the show ring, putting everything you’ve got into a task, or taking a final exam. Being fearless is not easy, and many times, you may fail. As we all know, failure sometimes comes multiple times before success ever shows itself. However, I believe what separates people is to be truly “fearless”; you cannot be afraid to fail. What makes the difference is that you keep trying and never, never give up. It is important to remember that God always has a plan, and that plan will take you where you need to in life. Taking challenges head-on is a testament to a person’s resilience. When we confront challenges directly, we embrace the opportunity to succeed or fail, but no matter the outcome, we grow along the way. Rather than running away, facing challenges headon builds courage and truly determines whether or not a person is fearless when it comes to accomplishing their goals. It allows us to learn from experiences, adapt, and emerge stronger. Challenges, when confronted directly, become stepping stones to success, pushing us beyond our comfort zones. In the face of adversity, the
decision to tackle challenges head-on is an empowering choice that can lead to both personal and professional triumphs. Every one of the Charolais juniors that I have had the opportunity to work with this past year has been absolutely exceptional. The future of the Charolais breed is so bright because our youth have an inner drive to succeed like no other. From the show ring to the quiz bowl contest, the competitive spirit is always “fearless.” Our junior members are known to take risks, give their all, and refuse to quit until they reach their goals. When setting a goal, it is important to hold yourself to it. I encourage everyone to take the new year head-on. Like our Charolais junior members, continue to live life fully and be fearless in the pursuit of completing your goals. Live big and get all that you can out of life and its experiences. As the year draws to a close, reflecting on the past twelve months fills me with a sense of gratitude. Despite the challenges and uncertainties, there have been moments of resilience, growth, and collective strength that have defined this year. I am thankful for the unwavering support of friends and family, who have been a major source of encouragement. The support and gratitude that the Charolais members have shown each and every junior member is truly something to be forever grateful for. Charolais juniors - continue to live life fully and be fearless in the pursuit of your goals throughout this new year. Never lose your competitive spirit, and above all never, never give up! Looking ahead to the new year, I am excited about the prospect of new opportunities and another year with the great white cows that we all know and love. As we all embark on this new season, let’s carry with us the lessons of the past year and approach the future with a fearless attitude. God willing, may we all have a fantastic and memorable new year. I hope to see you all at Charolais events throughout the year, new and old faces. It truly is an exciting time to be involved in the Charolais breed! Remember to set goals and chase them fearlessly. You never know what you can accomplish until you give it your all! What an exciting way to start this year’s Charolais Association of Texas Cowtown Sale! The Stabel family of Full Circle Cattle Company have spent the last handful of years assembling one of the most purpose driven Charolais herds in the country. LT Brenda 2184 Pld was integral to that goal, a maternal powerhouse who employs not only top tier EPDs but also has a cowman’s phenotype, she is truly one of a kind. With the retention of several daughters in herd and with a son, FC Olympus 2092, soon to see heavy use, Full Circle has decided to offer you the buyer an opportunity with this exceptional female. Hand selected by Satterfield Farms from the legendary Lindskov LT Ranch of South Dakota before she was partnered on with Full Circle, she has been the donor dam to multiple high-selling bulls not only for the Stabel family but also Lindskov LT Ranches and NextGen Cattle Co. The trend of greatness is hereditary as Brenda’s dam was selected by J&J Trust as the high-selling lot in the Grand Hills Dispersal and has become a cornerstone of that exciting program. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to have a chance at these program changing genetics…don’t let them slip by!

LT Brenda 8475 Pld has an eye catching phenotype and an EPD profile that matches! A daughter of the Lot 1 female, her first daughter was retained in the herd and she went straight to the donor pen and hasn’t looked back since. There is something special when a Junior consigns their first animal to a sale… made doubly so when it’s a bred and owned project. Such is the case here from Cayden Stein. CRS New Outlier 316 exemplifies the hard work and determination this young cowman has poured into this heifer. Long spined, deep middled, soft made yet powerful, she has the brood cow look but with flash. You can’t help but appreciate her square hip and the way she travels about the pen with authority. CHAROLAIS SPOTLIGHT
JACOB SAENZ (17), PHARR TEXAS
How long have you been in the Charolais breed and how did you get involved?
2024
Jacob – My involvement began 4 years ago with the Charolais
JANUARY
38
breed with showing composite Charolais heifers. My desire to work with the Charolais breed grew so I decided to make a step in purchasing purebred Charolais heifers. I now exhibit and breed to produce purebred offspring on my own and I have been registering Charolais cattle for 4 years.
What other activities do you participate in?
Jacob – My involvement outside of the Charolais breed has
consisted of being part of Hidalgo County 4-H where I have competed in several livestock judging events. With the PSJA FFA chapter, I am currently serving as the Secretary. I also had the privilege of competing alongside my three teammates on the 2022 Public Relations team which led us on an incredible journey of advancing to the State Level and being awarded the 2022 Texas FFA Public Relations state champions. I also enjoy competing in Speaking Development Events and Career Development Events. I also compete in one of my favorite competitions, Livestock Judging. I am part of the Chianina Association and National Honor Society.
What is your favorite memory that you have made through Charolais cattle? Jacob – One of my favorite memories that I have experienced
working with Charolais cattle is when I had the privilege to compete at my first TJCA show. I was welcomed and able to exhibit cattle and participate in offered events. I met so many new faces and built friendships with many members and leaders of the TJCA that I now cherish.
What is your cattle operation based on & how do you stay involved with the AIJCA?
Jacob – My family’s cattle operation, which is a cow-calf operation, has been based on a strong foundation of sound, balanced, and productive Charolais-influenced females that can excel in the show ring and perform in any breeding operation. I stay involved and
connected in the Charolais Association through having the Charolais breed play a prominent part in my herd. I also register many offspring that I breed and exhibit in the Charolais breed at Texas Majors and Association shows.
Who has been your role model in the Charolais breed? Jacob – My biggest role model in the Charolais breed would most
definitely be my Dad, Javier Saenz. Without him, I would have never begun my involvement in the Charolais Association. Without his dedicated support, he has always motivated and inspired me to work hard day in and day out and to always get out of my comfort zone and thrive to be the best version of myself. He has taught me to always use every situation I encounter as a learning experience whether it is success or failure. He has been an outstanding role model for me and family and without his advice and guidance, I wouldn’t have gained my love for cattle and agriculture.
What are your future goals?
Jacob – In my near future goals, I am looking forward to running for the Texas Junior Charolais board as well as the National board. After high school, I hope to attend an agriculture based college where I plan to participate on a collegiate Wool and Livestock Judging team. I plan to complete a masters degree in reproductive science to pursue a PHD in embryology. I want to pursue a career as an embryologist while continuing to build my herd. My goal is to also produce high quality cattle through embryology for other operations and create successful projects for the youth.

Calf scours are not inevitable. A strong prevention program is non-negotiable. Dependable scour prevention is essential for calf welfare, employee morale and business profitability. The immune system’s response to vaccination is variable and unpredictable. That’s why giving preformed antibodies instead of relying on a vaccine to stimulate antibody production is so important. I’m all for removing uncertainties. So yes, I stand by this product. (And no, I’m not.)

55th National
Charolais Show
JANUARY
2023 marked the 50th Anniversary of the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE). Charolais represented one of the five breeds exhibited in 1974 to first walk across the iconic green shavings. As Charolais exhibitor’s set-up stalls in the NAILE Pavilion on Thursday, November 9, the American-International Charolais Association (AICA) and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture hosted International Charolais guests from four countries visiting Charolais breeders and other agricultural interests across the Bluegrass state. Early afternoon, Saturday, November 11, fifty-nine Junior Charolais exhibitors from 23 states led 74 heifers across the Broadbent Arena green shavings for the evaluation of Shane Bedwell, Holt, Missouri. Sara Sullivan’s Champion Charolais Heifer went on to be slapped Supreme Champion Junior Heifer by judge Charlie Boyd II, Mayslick, Kentucky over 18 breed champions on Sunday evening. AICA Meetings commenced on Sunday, November 12 with membership representation from across the country. The 55th National Charolais Show, dedicated to long-time breeder and promoter, Wayne Templeton, kicked off late Monday afternoon, November 13. Cheramie Viator, Tomball, Texas evaluated entries representing 80 owners from 25 states and Canada. A great celebration of 50 years of tradition and legacy.

sales and consignment sales throughout the year, annually marketing around 200 Charolais bulls. Since 2008 they have held 16 Spring Bull Sales and 13 Fall Female Sales since 2011, each ranking in the breed’s top averaging sales. Alongside their sale successes, during his sixteen years with Wright Charolais, Chris has aided in many of their show ring triumphs as they exhibit cattle at various shows across the country. Their achievements have spanned amongst multiple National Grand Champion Bulls, a National Grand Champion Female, seven bred or owned Roll of Excellence Sires, the AICA Challenge Trophy awarded at the 48th National Charolais Show at the 2017 Fort Worth Stock Show, and much more. Naturally, the victories and memories make most things worthwhile. However, to stick with something for a long period of time takes dedication and an eye to see things futuristically as well. When asking Peuster, “Why Charolais?”, he dotes on the many aspects of the breed that have made it easy for him to stay involved. “The Charolais breed has a bright future, our advantages in heterosis, and performance coupled with the strides we’ve made in carcass quality position our breed to be a front runner for years to come”. Chris Peuster is one of the many dedicated Charolais breeders who has gone above and beyond to display his commitment to the breed. It is an honor for the American-International Charolais Association to recognize and award him for his ongoing efforts to support and improve the Charolais breed.

This years’ recipient of the AICA Herdsman of the Year award in memory of the late Ted Kelley, 2nd Charolais Herdsman of the Year, was presented at the 55th National Charolais Show at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. Chris Peuster, Wright Charolais, was recognized during the National Charolais Show for his long-term dedication and success within the Charolais breed. “I am very honored to be named Herdsman of the Year. I appreciate my peers making me their selection, it truly means a lot to receive such a prestigious award,” said Peuster when asked about his reaction to being awarded. A well-deserving recipient who has spent his life within the cattle industry. Growing up in Slater, Missouri on his family’s Polled Hereford farm is where his passion for purebred cattle was ignited. Chris said, “My uncle, Mike Page, was a cattle fitter that worked for several Charolais operations. He took me to my first Charolais Junior National in 1997 and that is where I first began meeting people within the Charolais breed”. A start which led to Derry and Mary Wright extending an opportunity to join their operation, Wright Charolais out of Richmond, Missouri, where Peuster has remained since. “I’d like to give a special thank you to them for everything they have done for my family and me”, Chris said. (l-r): Donnie Leddy, Stockhom, S.D., Miss Charolais USA 2024, Bella Parker, Godley, Texas; Libby, Tori, & Wayne Templeton, Jr., Abbeville, S.C.; Dan Eversole, Blacksburg, Va.; Dr. Clint Rusk, Kansas City, Mo.; David Hobbs, Kansas City, Mo. The 55th National Charolais Show was dedicated to long time Charolais breeder and supporter, Wayne Templeton, South Carolina. The show was held November 13, 2023, in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of the North American International Livestock Show, Louisville, Kentucky. Wayne Templeton grew up on his family farm in Gray Court, SC. His father managed a Hereford farm in Orangeburg, SC on Caw Caw Plantation where Wayne was first indoctrinated to breeding and exhibiting cattle by working alongside his father. As a teenager in the late 1950’s, Wayne would accompany the cattle show string to various livestock shows and would provide valuable leadership and assistance on show day. These ventures marked the very beginning of a notorious and successful 50+ year breeding and promoting the Charolais breed. Wayne’s illustrious career began in 1967 when he accepted a herdsman position in charge of show cattle with LH Bar Ranch in Newman GA. This purebred operation under his guiding influence exhibited numerous champions throughout the U.S. at all major expositions. Among the highlights of his many accomplishments at LH Bar Ranch was the breeding and promotion of a bull named ‘LH Valentin 420’. LH Bar sold this bull as a yearling and this herd-sire prospect was later renamed ‘LH General Lee 420’, which would eventually become the 6th National Grand Champion Bull in 1975 and an important sire for the Charolais breed over the next ten years. For his tutelage and success at LH Bar Ranch, Wayne was
by: Dan Eversole & John Dellinger
recognized in 1974 as the AICA Herdsman of the Year for the 1973-74 show season at the 5th National Charolais Show in Denver. He still displays and cherishes the belt buckle he received for the prestigious AICA honor to this day! Another accolade that Wayne received about the same era was the Wendell (Jim) Turner Award which recognized Wayne’s tireless efforts and sincere dedication in the exhibition and showing of purebred cattle. After the dispersal of LH Bar Ranch, Wayne and his family spent time at Ayavalla Plantation, one of the largest French Charolais herds in the country, before he assumed duties as manager of Charolais Herds and Ranches in Live Oak, Florida in 1974. Later in 1979, New York lawyer, Gerald Barton, began his Charolais herd with Ayavalla and LH Bar genetics. Barton hired Wayne to manage his herd which would soon settle in Abbeville, SC. Throughout the next few years, Wayne began establishing his own herd, adding important bulls such as Spains Polled Challenger and RCC Royal Standout 2973 to the mix. That herd dispersed in early 1983 with BCR Standout 111 157 being named as the 15th National Reserve Grand Champion Bull as one of their last successes. Wayne Templeton and his family have continued to breed and merchandise purebred Charolais and Charolais composite cattle over the past four decades. Annual herd inventory from 1979-2022 for Templeton Cattle Company has typically hovered around 50 Charolais females with the ‘NWT’ prefix. Wayne continued his prominence in the showring, was a wellrespected cattle judge, and was a very competent custom fitter. The

Templeton Family has produced and shown countless show winners over the years at all the major livestock expositions and at several state fairs. For their hard work and dedication, the Templeton household won the Abbeville County Outstanding Farm Award in 2000 in addition to receiving several other county and state awards for his service and leadership to the cattle industry. The SC Charolais Association also bestowed an honorary lifetime membership to Wayne and his family in 2011. A farm accident in 2004, followed by a devastating stroke in 2011, has now rendered Wayne speechless and wheel chair bound. Delores, his wife of 63 years, is his primary caregiver with assistance from their daughter Sharon and granddaughter Casey Evans. In August of 2022, most of the Templeton Cattle Company was dispersed with a few select animals being retained by Casey. It is interesting to note that the current herd traces back to the genetics that Wayne worked with and knew quite well, the LH Bar and Ayavalla Plantation, with some cattle representing more than ten generations of Wayne’s select breeding and stringent selection. Wayne Templeton has kept every issue of the Charolais Journal
dating back to the early 1970’s and has been a permanent fixture among Charolais breeders and enthusiasts in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast states for over 50 years. He has assisted and graciously given valuable advice to many young 4-H and FFA members on how to ‘feed and fit’ any breed of show cattle. He always stressed that his number one concern on the show road was to always keep cattle comfortable and fresh-looking. It was quite obvious to all fellow cattle exhibitors that his dedication to the Charolais breed, and the handling of cattle was very important to him. Wayne Templeton has dedicated his entire life to the cattle industry, has been an avid supporter, prominent breeder, and everlasting promoter of the Charolais breed. The AmericanInternational Charolais Association is proud to dedicate the 55th National Charolais Show to him.

Fifth Annual Ludeke-Truax Veterinary/Medical Student Professional Scholarship Awarded
The American Charolais Foundation (ACF) awarded the fifth annual Russell W. Ludeke – Harold Christopher Truax II Memorial Award this fall in Louisville, Ky. during the fall ACF Board Meeting. This $4,000 veterinary/medical student professional scholarship was awarded to Rachael (Hockenbery) Jackson, York Springs, Pa. for 2023. Jackson is in her final year at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. “Upon graduation, I plan to apply to Emergency Medicine programs. I could not imagine a better fit for my personality. I’m always on the go and I love never knowing what is going to come through the doors next. Additionally, patients in the ER are usually there during one of the most stressful and unkown times in their lives; I find a sense of purpose in being the calm and stable presence for my patients. I feel as though my background in raising cattle has prepared me for this. We never know what each day is going to bring and we have to remain calm under pressure, Jackson states. “I would not be who I am today without the Charolais breed and I would love nothing more than to give back to the association that helped me, so that the next generation can have the same opportunities.” An initial gift, from QuestMark Information Management, Inc., Charolais breeders Larry and Beth Ludeke of Bar J Charolais, Liverpool, Texas and the Evelyn Gay Duhon Family of JVS Cattle Co., Sulphur, Louisiana, will provide professional awards annually to those impacted by the Charolais breed.

WHICH PROGRAM IS BEST FOR YOU? Beginning January 1, 2024 active adults and juniors will be able to enroll their dams online for 2024. Enrolling your dams online is not mandatory. If you prefer to wait until the paper copies are sent out, those will be mailed the second week in February. Our 3 program options areReg Only- dams are not enrolled for the calving year. Birth weight, weaning weight, and yearling weight will not be printed on the calf’s certificate. There will be a registration fee charged for each calf registered, depending on how old the calf is at the time of registration. PPR- dams will be enrolled at no charge. The birth weight, weaning weight, and yearling weight can be recorded for the calf and will print on the calf’s certificate. There will be a registration fee charged for each calf registered, depending on how old the calf is at the time of registration. WHR- dams will be enrolled for $16 (if inventory is submitted before April 1, 2024). Use your own “Artillery” to win the battle of calving ease and still perform! Sleep all night calving ease that maintains breed average growth at weaning and then excels towards yearling is hard to do. He ranks in the top 1% of the breed for CE, BW & Milk. Tank has over 2,000 progenies registered at AICA and he is passing his 915 lbs. AWW on as well as his AYW of 1,606 lbs. and ratio of 129, which ranked him as the #1 AYW out of 105 head of contemporaries. WC Artillery 2404 is out of a first-calf-heifer that comes from the same cow family as WC Uncharted 7328. This herd sire is a 7/8th brother to our other featured Tank son WC Commander 2414 P.
