They were in some way a part of this history and they want to make a record of that history.

Trinket R
One of the more interesting things about writing pedigree and historical articles is how you get your information. One of the ways it all starts is with a phone call from someone who has information and they want to pass it on to you. They were in some way a part of this history and they want to make a record of that history.
This photo was taken in 1965 at a show in Grand Island, Nebraska. Leo Whiz was a Superior performer in AQHA cutting.
Not all the calls I get will take me somewhere but one of the calls I got a while back was from Roy Jones of Oakville, Texas. Mr. Jones and I started talking about horses like Band Play and some of the horses and people associated with this great stallion. I could tell that what Mr. Jones was telling me was his life with horses and through that life he was a source of information needed for quarter horse history.
Then a few months ago I did a Mares with More column on three King P-234 daughters (Sorrel Sue, Betty Warren and 89’er) and I got another call from Roy Jones. This time Roy wanted to tell me some things he knew about a mare named Trinket R. Trinket R was a mare that I didn’t know much about except that she was the dam of a horse called Leo Whiz. Leo Whiz was a Nebraska horse that was a noted all around performer in the 1960’s. Leo Whiz was born from a mating of Leo Scamp and Trinket R. Leo Scamp was a son of Sorrel Sue. Page 14

So the more I listened about Trinket R, the more I thought she would be a great subject for the Mares with More. A recent call back to Roy Jones allowed us to organize some information about his knowledge of Trinket R. Here is how Roy recalls the life of Trinket R, “The Clark Brothers at Bluff Creek Ranch in Del Rio, Texas bred her and they sold her to Sparks Rust. Rust sold her to O. R. Mitchell in San Antonio. He was a Dodge car dealer in San Antonio. He bought her for his 16-year-old daughter. They kept her out at Ed Sieler’s. Ed went to roping on her and Ed ended up with the mare.” Roy continued, “Ed was a real good hand with those horses and he was roping on her and she was like four years old. This friend of mine name Larry Wimer was going to have a match roping with Jackie Burkholder. Larry was just 14 years old. So Ed offered to let him ride Trinket R. Well he THE WORKING HORSE • JULY 2010
Trinket R was foaled in 1947 and she was bred by Bluff Creek Ranch at Del Rio, Texas. My copy of the AQHA Stud Book shows when this book was printed that she was owned by Janet Mitchell. Her last owner was Mel and Sonya Snyder of Pasco, Washington. Her official AQHA show record shows that she had one AQHA halter point.

goes out to try her and she worked so fast and quick that he was afraid to ride her. She jerked the calf right over him. So he didn’t ride her but Whiz Whizenhunt comes along and he bought the mare. Ray Wharton loaned Whizenhunt the money.” A recent conversation with Larry Wimer reaffirmed much of this story, but he added, “I think Ed was as good a rope horse trainer you could find.” Larry also related about the power of Trinket R and how the calf would hit him in the chest when he got off the horse. Roy continued, “I saw Whiz rope on her and she was as nice a lookin mare as I ever saw. So then Whiz roped and bull dogged both on her. He was at Jasper, Texas in 1954 and he broke his leg in bulldogging,” continued Jones about the next phase of Trinket R’s life.

“Whiz let Buck Abbott take her to California while he was getting well. He then went to Auctioneer School while he was getting well. Then after he got well he went to work for Harley Roth at Rapid City, South Dakota. He put on Rodeos and had a sale barn there at Rapid City.” “In the mean time Trinket R was crippled out in California. Then Roth offered to trade Whiz a brand new station wagon for the mare. The deal was that he could buy her back but he never did.” “Then Harley Roth got killed in an air plane crash and in the spring of 1961 they were going to sell all his horses. My father-in-law A. R. Buckli, who lived in Montana at that time and I had told him about this mare and so he was going to go down and try to buy that mare. He took $5,000 and she was 18 years old then. But they started her at $5,000 and she brought $10,000. That was in the spring of 1965. Don’t know what happened to her after that.” She went to Colorado and was owned by Quincy Farms of Denver. point earner in performance. Not a bad record for a stallion with only seven registered foals.
The sire of Trinket R was Clavel R. He was bred by the Miers Brothers of Del Rio, Texas. He was foaled the last of March in 1944. The registration application for Clavel R indicates that he was registered by the Bluff Creek Ranch through the efforts of Sparks Rust. The sire of Clavel R was Honky Tonk Red by Band Play. Band Play was sired by Band Time. This makes Clavel R a grandson of Band Play. Band Play was out of Fair Play by Barney Lucas and she was out of Overnight by Beknighted. Honky Tonk Red was bred by Arthur Smith of Odem, Texas. The Miers Brothers the breeders of Clavel R registered him.
The dam of Clavel R was Chaparrita Miers. She was sired by a horse named Keggy by Brown Jug by Texas Chief. The dam of Keggy was a Dogie Mare by Dogie Beasley. The dam of Chaparrita Miers was a Hussie Galloway mare by Bob Handy by Uncle Jimmy Gray.
The dam of Honky Tonk Red was Escoba, a daughter of Little Joe and Black Mable. Escoba was an old race mare that became a foundation mare for Lowell Hankins of the Hankins Brothers. Lowell’s brother Jess was the owner of King P-234. Escoba was the dam of Miss Alice and Diamond Bob. Diamond Bob by Flying Bob was the 1949 AQHA Racing Champion Aged Stallion. Miss Alice was the dam of the AQHA Champions King’s Joe Boy, L H Quarter Moon and Black Gold King.
Roy didn’t get Trinket R but he did own her sire. He told the story this way, “I ended up with Clavel R. He was gelded when he was seven years old. I first saw him was in 1951. They had an RCA rodeo over here at Beeville, Texas and Jim Bob Altizer was bulldogging on him. And the steer cut under the horse and the horse rolled over him and Jim never bulldogged again. Sparks Rust sold the horse to Vic Maspero in San Antonio and then he sold the horse to Len McClaugherty at Tilden. That was during the drought and I was over their helping burn pear. We would rodeo on the weekends and I was bulldogging on Clavel R. He was a really nice horse and then I bought him. I bulldogged on him for several years and then I gave him to my little brother. He sold him to some people named Weekly and they bulldogged on him. He was 20 when my brother let him go.” A letter sent to the AQHA and found in the file for Clavel R indicates that the horse was castrated in February 1953. Sparks Rust sent the letter to the AQHA.
Honky Tonk Red sired only seven AQHA registered foals. His record shows that he sired two AQHA ROM racehorses in Oriente and Indio M. Indio M was ROM with an AA rating on the track. He started in 74 races and placed first second or third in 35 of them. Bigg’s Rust was Honky Tonk Red’s AQHA

Tumbaga R was the dam of Trinket R. This mare was bred by the Bluff Creek Ranch with the registration application signed Bluff Creek Ranch by Sparks Rust. Her sire was Rusty R, a horse bred by Jap Holman of Sonora, Texas. His sire was Red Bug by Everett, a thoroughbred. The registration application indicates that the dam of Red Bug was a Quarter Mare whose pedigree was untraced. The dam of Rusty R was a mare by Master Gould by Sealskin. The dam of the Master Gould mare was a Doggie Sorrel Mare by Dogie Beasley.
Helen Michaelis was the inspector on the registration of Tumbaga R and she had this to say about her, “A little tall, a little light but a much better mare than pictures show. She’s the only colt by Rusty R that showed thoroughbred blood.” The injured Trinket R became a broodmare. Her first foal was Roth’s Tacky born in 1956. This mare was listed as bred by Whiz Whizenhunt. She was a dun mare by Goldie’s Son. Roth’s Tacky was an unshown mare but she was the dam of the ROM performer Scamp’s Doll.
This is Rusty R, the maternal grandsire of Trinket R. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum.
This makes Trinket R double bred to Dogie Beasley. Dogie Beasley was sired by Sykes Rondo and out of May Mangum by Anthony. Dogie Beasley was a full brother to Jenny. Jenny was the dam of Little Joe and Possum (King). Some of the other siblings of Dogie Beasley would include Nettie Harrison and Baby Ruth, both prominent mares in the quarter horse breed. Baby Ruth was the dam of Paul El by Hickory Bill and Nettie Harrison was the dam of Big Liz, a mare used on the King Ranch. Big Liz was sired by Paul El. The dam of Tumbaga R was Johnny Walker’s Lady by Johnny Walker who was sired by Uncle Jimmy Gray. The dam of Johnny Walker’s Lady was a Whitehead and Wardlaw Mare by Billy Anson by Harmon Baker by Peter McCue. Her dam was a Whitehead and Wardlaw mare by the Prosser Horse.
The second foal out of Trinket R was Leo Whiz. This stallion was sired by Leo’s Scamp and he was bred by Harley Roth. Leo Whiz was sold to Wayne Schick of Curtis, Nebraska at the 1961 estate dispersal of Harley Roth’s horses. Leo Whiz was an ROM racehorse as a two year old. He earned the old AA rating on the racetrack. He had one win and two seconds in ten starts. Leo Whiz went from the racetrack to the arena. He was originally trained by Clarence Roth and then put in the capable hands of Lowell Ferrel of Imperial, Nebraska. A history of Leo Whiz was published in the December 1966 issue of THE QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL in the story Leo Whiz, All-Around Stallion by Wayne Laske. One of the first shows this horse went to was in Kansas City. It was at this Continued on page 26.

8MJ \FX YMJ PNSI TK RFWJ YMFY MFI YMJ MTWXJRFS±X WJXUJHY show that he won the Senior Reining, working cow horse with a second in tie-down roping and a third in barrel racing. This was a great start for the young son of Trinket R, but tragedy struck at Oakley, Kansas when Leo Whiz broke a bone in his leg. This break came after he had won the aged stallion class and the pole bending. At the time he was leading the nation in reining and was second in working cowhorse when he was forced out of competition. Leo Whiz wasn’t done yet as he was brought back after his bone healed in 1964 to win 32 all-around championships from 36 shows he entered. He earned the Nebraska State Championship All-Around as the high point in the aged stallion, senior reining, senior cutting, pole bending, barrel racing, working cow horse, western riding, tie-down calf roping and steer roping. The arena success of Leo Whiz in 1964 was felt on the national level as he was in the AQHA top ten with a second in pole bending, fifth in calf roping, fifth in barrel racing and sixth in western riding. He was the 1964 AQHA High Point Tie-Down Calf Roping Stallion and the 1964 AQHA High Point Pole Bending Stallion. He repeated his success in 1965 with the Nebraska State All-Around Championship with 10 individual championships on the state’s show circuit. Leo Whiz was an AQHA Champion that earned 40 AQHA halter points and 295 performance points. He earned points in halter, cutting, barrel racing, reining, calf roping, steer roping, western pleasure, western riding, working cow horse, pole bending and racing. He was Superior in open barrel racing and superior in open cutting. He was an NCHA Certificate of Ability winner in the NCHA. Leo Whiz was the sire of several performers in the arena. They include Star Leo Whiz with 89 AQHA open performance points. He was the 1977 AQHA World Show top ten finalist in working cowhorse and third in the 1977 AQHA World Show in Senior Heeling and in 1978 he was third again in the Senior Heeling. My Whiz was an AQHA Champion with 20 halter points, 50 performance points and two youth performance points. Leo Whiz Kid was ROM in the arena with 35 open performance points and three open halter points. Leo Whiz Bean was an NCHA Certificate of Ability winner with 58 open performance points in the AQHA. Leo Whiz Sun was an AQHA point earner and in the PHBA he earned 405 performance and halter points. He was a PHBA Amateur Reserve World Champion in performance. Leo’s Tacky was the next horse out of Trinket R. Leo sired this mare and that makes her a ¾ sister to Leo Whiz. Leo’s Tacky had a limited career on the racetrack and came away with a 45-speed index and one second in four starts. She is the dam of Leo’s Jet Straw. Page 26
Scamp’s Whizzer was the 1959 foal of Trinket R and Leo Scamp. This horse was ROM on the racetrack with another AA rating. The next Trinket R foal was Poco Whizzer by Poco Bob. This gelding earned four AQHA youth performance point. Mr Trinket was the next AQHA Champion out of Trinket R. The AQHA World Champion Quarter Running Horse Mr Bar None sired him. Mr Trinket was ROM in the arena with 23 halter points and 16.5 performance points. Mr Trinket was an ROM sire with foals like Trinket’s Wonder, who was ROM on the racetrack and Gitty Up Go, who was ROM in the arena. Mr Trinket was bred by Harley Roth. The AQHA Stud Book indicates that at time of publication, Mr Trinket was owned by Quincy Farms in Denver, Colorado. Trinket Miss was the 1963 foal of Poco Dell and Trinket R. This mare had a show record but no points. She was bred by Quincy Farms. Sir Sun was an appendix-registered horse by Deep Sun. This horse had no AQHA record. Deep Sun was a thoroughbred stallion owned by Quincy Farms. Bar Trinket was an AQHA halter point earner with one point. He was sired by Quincy Bar and bred by Quincy Farms. Trinket Amazon was the 1967 foal of Trinket R. This mare was sired by Red Miller Jr. She is listed as bred by Dr. Henry and Lona Wolf of Waterloo, Iowa. The last foal out of Trinket R was Trinket R Too by Lee’s Domino. She had no show record in the AQHA. She was bred by Mel and Sonya Snyder of Pasco, Washington. The one thing that Trinket R shows us is that not all the great horses have a big long show record to prove their worth. She was the kind of mare that had the horseman’s respect for what she could do and did in the rodeo arena where records for the horses are hard to come by or find and that is what makes us look at her as a Mare with More.
Her son Leo Whiz wasn’t too bad a show horse either. He had that great show record and that enhances her role as a mare with more. Larry Thornton is a pedigree analyst and breeding consultant. T The South Texas Quarter Horse
was one of the original lines of modern quarter horse. This is the line that carried the blood of horses like Little Joe and his full brother Possum (King). Possum and Little Joe were sired by Traveler and out of Jenny. Jenny was an Old Billy bred mare. Little Joe and Possum have given us horses such as King P-234 and San Siemon. Both of these stallions represent the South Texas Quarter Horse. San Siemon was double bred to Little Joe and Possum. The South Texas Quarter Horse was founded by the great stallion Old Billy. This is the Old Billy that was reportedly chained to a tree during the Civil War by his owner while he went off to war. When the war was over Old Billy was purchased by William “Billy” Fleming of Belmont, Texas. Old Billy, also known by such names as Billy Boy, was sired by Shiloh and out of Ram Cat by Steel Dust.
Band Time the sire of Band Play winning a race by daylight at Washington Park in 1931
Old Billy became a sire of many fine South Texas Quarter Horses, but was especially successful with a mare named Paisana. The mating of Old Billy and Paisana gave the quarter horse such noted horses as John Crowder, Anthony, Joe Collins, Red Rover, Whalebone and Jenny Oliver. Anthony was the sire of May Mangum, the dam of Jenny. Jenny was the dam of Little Joe and Possum. Old Billy was responsible for another outstanding line of Quarter Horses in the Peter McCue line. Peter McCue was sired by Dan Tucker by Barney Owens by Martin’s Cold Deck by Old Billy. Of course Peter McCue has given the industry horses like Hickory Bill, Harmon Baker, Jack McCue and John Wilkens. Examples of other horses from this line would include Joe Hancock by John Wilkens and Old Sorrel from the King Ranch. Old Sorrel was sired by Hickory Bill. Page 30

With the development of the Old Billy line of quarter horse we find that this family, like all families of horses, needs some outcross blood. One of those interesting outcross bloodlines was with Domino. Domino was a thoroughbred stallion that was noted as the “black whirlwind” because of his great speed. He was such a great influence on speed that he is a “hallmark” sire for not only the quarter horse but the thoroughbred as well. The blood of Domino flows through many influential modern stallions. They include Three Bar, Leo, Top Deck and Jackstraw. The great stallion Sugar Bars shows his Domino influence on both sides of the pedigree. Our subject stallion for this Working Lines was a Domino bred stallion named Band Play. Band Play proved to be a good outcross on the Old Billy blood of South Texas. The story of Band Play begins with his sire Band Time. THE WORKING HORSE • JULY 2010
Band Time was foaled in 1929 and raced in 1931 and 1932. He was the winner of three of his eight starts at two. He was second in two and third one time with two unplaced starts. He ran the next year in Cuba and won two starts but was injured in the second start and retired to heal the injury. He went blind before he could get back to the track thus ending is racing career.

It was about this time that a Texas rancher named E. A. Whiteside was looking for a thoroughbred stallion for his ranch at Sipe Springs. Whiteside found Band Time and bought him. It is at this point that it can get a little confusing. According to The Quarter Horse magazine article, “The Story of Band Play” that Whiteside didn’t get Band Time bought until 1938 and Band Play was born in 1934. We must assume that Whiteside may have leased or had a breeding agreement for Band Time and then got him bought in 1938. Band Time lived the rest of his life on the Whiteside Ranch. His blood today can be seen in some very interesting descendants. The Whiteside Ranch was rich in the blood of Old Joe Bailey. Old Joe Bailey carried the blood of Shiloh and Steel Dust and even a cross to Old Billy. The Whiteside Ranch was the last owner of Old Joe Bailey. Band Time was bred to mares that carried the blood of Old Joe Bailey. That would include Sis B Bailey. This mare was sired by Fred Bailey by Old Joe Bailey. Sis B Bailey was the dam of Maurzy. This mare was bred to Little Jazz to get Jazmau. Jazmau was bred to Royal King to get Royal Jazabell. Royal Jazabell was the dam of Bill’s Jazabell, an NCHA Open World Champion Mare and dam of Jazabell Quixote. Jazabell Quixote was the 1982 NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Champion and dam of foals that have earned over $1,700,000. High Time the sire of Band Time is a most interesting stallion. He was the sire of Fleeting Time, the broodmare sire of the great Joe Reed II, sire of Leo. High Time was a son of Ultimus by Commando by Domino. The dam of Ultimus was Running Stream by Domino. This makes Ultimus 2 X 2 inbred to Domino. Ultimus was the last named foal sired by Domino. The dam of High Time was Noonday by Domino. This makes High Time 3 X 3 X 2 inbred to Domino. Bandymo was the dam of Band Time. She was sired by Uncle by *Star Shoot by Isinglass. racehorses like Della Moore and Joe Blair. These two horses were the sire and dam of Joe Reed P-3. The obituary of Band Play that appeared in THE QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL in late 1960 tells us that Perkins saw Band Play run a dead heat with a horse named Cyclone. He tried at that time to buy the horse but wasn’t able to get it done. He then found that Band Play was running in a claiming race in Kingsville, Texas. He claimed the horse and continued his race career. According to the obituary, Band Play ran 30 mores races and 12 matches for Perkins and was never beaten. When it became too difficult to match or find someone to race against Band Play, he was sold to Esteban and Elijio Garcia of Encino, Texas. The Garcia Brothers later sold Band Play to the Welder Ranch. According to THE QUARTER HORSE article “The Story of Band Play,” Band Play “was a favorite of Narciso Cantu, foreman on the ranch, and when Bob Welder decided he had all the Band Play colts he could use, he presented the stallion to his foreman.” Cantu kept the horse for several years and then he was sold again.
When Onza Garcia was bred to Band Play she produced Oncita, dam of Leocita and she was the dam of Quincy Rocket. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum.
Band Play was bred by Claude Arnett of Lometa, Texas. He was foaled in 1934. His dam was Fair Play. She was sired by a horse known as Barney Lucas. The records show that this Barney Lucas was either a son of Traveler or a grandson of this foundation sire. The pedigree of Traveler was unknown. The dam of Fair Play was Overnight, a mare registered in The Jockey Club. She was reported to be sired by Beknighted and out of Kitty Bailie. Just like many of the early pedigrees we have some discrepancies in the pedigree of Fair Play. The Quarter Horse magazine article “The Story of Band Play” indicates that the sire of Fair Play may have been a thoroughbred named Barney Lucus. The article states that the mare Overnight was bred several times to the thoroughbred Barney Lucus. Barney Lucus a thoroughbred was sired by Dr. Curtis by Magnificus. He was out of Massacre by Requital. A note on the AQHA registration papers for Band Play states that Overnight was registered with The Jockey Club but that she did carry some Quarter Horse blood. The note indicates that this information came from Claude Arnett. The next owner of Band Play was Perry Perkins of Mercedes, Texas. Perkins had been associated with Page 34
Band Play’s last stop was with Byrne James and Harl Thomas of Raymondville, Texas. The name Byrne James may be familiar to some of you as he was a one-time owner of King P-234. It was Mrs. James that gave a young stallion named Button a new name. The new name was King because he would be “King of the Quarter Horses.”
James and Thomas would own Band Play the rest of his life. The obituary in THE QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL indicated that he was being used by Dr. A. B. Rich of Austin, Texas when he died. Band Play sired 109 AQHA registered foals with 40 performers. His performers included 29 race starters with 15 ROM and one stakes winner. The leading money winner was Play Time. The stakes winner was Quit Time. This horse won the 1953 State Fair Stallion Stakes in New Mexico. Quit Time was also stakes placed in the Eagle Pass Derby and the Raton Handicap. Band Play sired four halter point earners and four performance point earners in the AQHA. They earned fourperformance point ROM with one AQHA Champion and one Superior performer. The AQHA Champion was Cow Creek Bob. Cow Creek Bob was shown to his AQHA Championship by Dee Burk, who was a noted roper and trainer. This horse earned 38 halter and 38 performance points. The Superior Award winner was Miss Nan Play with a Superior in cutting and 50 points in the AQHA. She was a Certificate of Ability Continued on page 38.. winner with $3,352.77 in the NCHA. The dam of the Fred Raymond Mare was Lucretia M. Lucretia M was the dam of Hickory Bill. This information was found on the AQHA Registration Application for a mare named J& T 2. She was one of the Garcia mares that was sired by Gotch. The inspector for this AQHA registration was George Clegg. Clegg at one time owned Little Joe and he was also the owner of Hickory Bill and Lucretia M. This also makes Gotch double bred to Lucretia M. Bunny B was the dam of several horses sired by Band Play. Bee Play sired 74 AQHA performers that earned 817.5 AQHA points. This includes 10 ROM performers, one AQHA Youth World Champion, four Superior Award winners and two AQHA Champions. Jim McMurphy, Spirit River, Alberta, Canada - Hi, Jann and Bill - Just
May 2010 -
thought I would drop you a line and let you know how much I appreciated all the help at the Rope Horse Sale April 23-24, 25 , 2010.From the staff up front to the staff out back, I felt that I got all the help and advise I could ask for - and then some!”V.I.P.” treatment as far as I was concerned!Just a note I thought I would pass on: I was watching consignments very close from home as you updated the internet listing. I had some horses picked out to take a closer look at. Well - let·s just say I threw that list out the window once I got down there and actually watched the horses perform in the jackpot and previews. The catalog is GOOD BUT - to REALLY get the true feel for the horses, I strongly recommend going to the sale and watch how the horses perform - in the jackpot setting as well as the previews.I quickly scratched a few horses BUT quickly added many more to my list! While watching the previews on Saturday (both rope horse previews) I was able to narrow my list down to which horses I was REALLY interested in.As you know, I brought home a total of four horses. I am very happy with ALL of the horses!! Looking forward to the fall sale...!Thanks and see you this fall!
Shawn Hockhalter & Leah Sundberg, Gillette, WY – We purchased two-
Adam Jones, Harlowton, MT
- Both of my team roping horses have been purchased at your April Rope Horse Sale. The latest being last weekend·s Hip 153 (Badgers Cactus, a 98 AQHA Red Roan Gelding offered by Turner Performance Horses, Victor, MT). I have checked cows and headed off of him already and he is great. Thank you for the hard work you put into your horse sales. I will be back for more.
year-old “Diggers Drag Time” at the November 2007 sale. This year, he was my barrel futurity horse. He won the Campbell County Cowgirls & Cowboys year-end 1D Pole Bending buckle and he was also the Reserve Champion Pole bending Futurity Horse at the Fizz Bomb Futurity!! He has won us many checks Team Sorting this past summer including winning rst and second in the Open Division in an RSNC Sanctioned event in Powell, Wy. Thank you - for the great horses you sell! April 2010 - Donna Reid, Swift Current, Sask - Hi, Jann:Just want to let you know we love the stud.He has excellent conformation and a great dispsotion, I am enjoying him alot and am very pleased with him. We have had calls to breed with hinm already!Once again, thank you for all of your hard work and checking him out for me.Also, I very much appreciate Glen Gabels hard work with this. I would not have been able to get him with out the help of the two of you. YOU ARE THE BEST!! (Donna purchased “Wimpys Goodtime Cash” offered by Green Valley Ranch, Aubrey, TX at our February 2010 ‘Sons & Daughters· sale session)
JD and Sammi Philleo, WY – We
love “Hippie” the horse we purchased at the February 20-08 sale. Abby has ofcially stolen Hippie from her Dad who showed him last year in the cowhorse events and she now uses him as her junior rodeo and rope horse. Thanks so much for all you do there. Hippie has the biggest, most patient soul for our little girl. We will be back to see you soon!
Ivin Potts, Westlock, Alberta, Canada – Hello - At the February 2010 sale
May 2010 -

Eli Toney, Williamsburg, VA
– Just wanted to share the attached with you, Frost is well adjusted to his new home, I am enjoying him, great horse with a great mind and attitude. Eli purchased Hp 273 “Frosts Bud” at our September 2009 sale event. The good gray gelding was offered by Wayne Chapman, Alliance, NE.
April 2010 - Wade Fowler, Crossre Quarter Horses, Chetwynd, BC Canada – Hello, Jann and Bill - I just thought I would write you a line to let you know that the horse I purchased at your September 2008 Rope horse sale recently won me a horse trailer at a team roping event in Fort St. John BC Canada. The horse was consigned by Lee Pedersen. My father also bought a rope horse from BLS in September 2009 and he is doing awesome. That has become our yearly road trip now. Thank you

Sugarcita is out of Oncita by Band Play and Oncita is out of Onza Garcia, one of the Garcia Brothers mares. Onza Garcia was sired by Old Tuerto by Hickory Bill by Peter McCue. The dam of Onza Garcia was Azteca by Little Joe and out of a Clegg Mare. Thus we have the mating of Band Play, a Domino stallion with the blood of Old Billy through both Peter McCue and Little Joe. This is pretty typical of the Garcia matings. More on that later. Oncita was the dam of several performers in addition to Sugarcita by Sugar Bars. Leocita was sired by Leo and out of Oncita. Leocita was ROM on the racetrack with an AAA rating. She was the dam of several ROM runners including Leocitan, winner of the 1964 Montana Centennial Futurity and Leo Bay Dial, a mare that won the 1970 Colorado Bred Derby.
Sweet Victress was the dam of the ROM race mare Passion For Cash. This mare is the dam of Chicks Payoff. Chicks Payoff was an AQHA Superior performer in amateur working hunter and youth working hunter. He has earned 343 AQHA points in open, amateur and youth divisions. Leaving Memories is a stakes placed runner out of Sweet Blush. This stallion won in excess of $112,121 with a third in such races as the HQHRA Inaugural Handicap. Leaving Memories is the broodmare sire Illegal Memories, the 2007 AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Gelding. Illegal Memories recently won the 2010 Bank of America Delta Downs Challenge Championship. Kingdom Key is a stakes winning son of Quincy Rocket. He won the Bay Meadows Futurity in 1977. Kingdom Key is the broodmare sire of Little Bit Of Baja, the 2007 AQHA Racing Champion Three-Year-Old Gelding. This horse was also a two-time runner-up in the G1 Champion of Champions. Oncita Leo was a full sister to Leocita. Oncita Leo was the dam of Jet Injun. He won five stakes races including three divisions of the Evangeline Downs Championship Series winning at 330, 400 and 440. He set several track records at these distances at different tracks. He was the 1971 AQHA Racing Champion Aged Stallion. He was sired by Jet Deck.
Here is a side note on the mare Oncita. She was the dam of the stallion Old 51 by Major Speck. Old 51 was the sire of Fifty Rosy, who was the dam of Dottie Black. Dottie Black was the dam of Texas Dottie. Texas Dottie was the dam of Royal Tincie, the dam of the great Blue Hen mare Royal Blue Boon. Royal Blue Boon was the 1984 NCHA Super Stakes Reserve Co-Champion. Band Play Jr was bred by the Garcia Brothers. The 4th Annual East Coast Reined Cow Horse Classic Introduces East Coast Regional Championship July 13-18, 2010! $30,000 added cash and prizes will be on the line! In only four short years, the East Coast Reined Cow Horse Classic has become one of the top reined cow horse events in the nation. And with $30,000 added in cash and prizes up for grabs, the ECRCHC is the largest reined cow horse show east of the Mississippi! Some of the country’s best horses and riders will arrive at Roane State Expo Center in Harriman, TN, July 13-18 for the 2010 event. The five-day event will feature a derby for 4- and 5-year-olds, a snaffle bit futurity for 3-year-olds, and a bridle spectacular for horses 6-years and up. Added to the ECRCHC schedule for 2010 is the East Coast Regional Championships, which is open to any rider in the North and Southeastern Regions. The week’s schedule will kick off on July 13-14, with a clinic hosted by world renowned trainer, Todd Crawford. A former National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion, Crawford is the leading money earner in the NRCHA, with lifetime earnings exceeding $1 million. Herd work for the derby and bridle spectacular herd work will start the horse show on Thursday, July 15. Derby rein work will headline Friday, July 16, followed by the bridle spectacular (rein + fence work), and NRCHA horse show classes. Saturday, July 17, will mark the start of the Futurity classes with rein work, followed by Derby fence work and the horse show. Food and entertainment will be provided on Saturday evening. The show will wrap up on Sunday, with Futurity fence work and the remainder of our NRCHA and AQHA classes. Judges for this year’s event are Bobby Harrison and Bozo Rogers. Adding the excitement of the horse is that Wide World of Horses, the most watched equine program on RFD-TV, will be at the Roane State Expo Center to capture the all of the action of the 2010 East Coast Reined Cow Horse Classic’s festivities. For the programming schedule check out www. wideworldofhorses.com. NRCHA affiliates are lining up to be a part of the ECRCHC and its new format. Those affiliates include: Atlantic Reined Cow Horse Association, Ohio Reined Cow Horse Association, Dixie Reined Cow Horse Association, All Florida Reined Cow Horse Association, and Georgia Reined Cow Horse Association. Sponsors for this year’s event include: Kalpowar Quarter Horses, Twister Trailer, Surpass, Rios of Mercedes, Parks Bell Ranches, Yellow Creek Ranch, Kay Cassell Equine Insurance, Boehringer Ingelheim, Rosell Trailer Sales, Got Cow Horse?, Nickey and Patsy Smith, Mid America Equine Sales, Hays Ranch, Conicelli.com, E Bar G Ranches, Triple J Ranch, Tom Iannotti, Fort Payne Steel, and Tizwhiz Feeds. Reined cow horse is one of the fastest growing equine sports and the ECRCHC will be showcasing the best in reined cow horse competition in Harriman, TN. For more information about the ECRCHC, entry forms, rules and a complete schedule, please visit www.ecrchc.com.
