in 12.12 seconds. He was a stakes placed winner in the Speedhorse 220 stakes. This outstanding runner earned a 108-speed index and a Superior in racing. He had 41 starts with 15 wins; 8 seconds and 1 third. Oklahoma Fuel is the sire of 103 racing ROM with three stakes winners. His stakes winners include Yeller Fuel, Jet Switch and Oklahoma Hanka. The Oklahoma Fuel foals have excelled in the arena as well. This includes horses like Yellersmykoler, a PHBA World Champion Amateur Barrel racer; Seminole Fuel PHBA Reserve World Champion; Mis Okie Fuel Pac, PHBA World Champion and Oklahoma Landed PHBA Reserve World Champion.

Prince Hank by Hank H was sire of Yellow Hankie when bred to Oklahoma Rosie. She in turn was the dam of Oklahoma Fuel. Oklahoma Fuel was the sire of the legendary Oklahoma Top Hat (Scooter). Photo courtesy Helen Robey.

Minnie Marie was the ROM arena horse. This gelding was also Superior in cutting with 92 performance points. The fourth foal in this group was Me Hora, an NCHA money winner. Rock Lolly by Billy Van W was the dam of seven performers with six ROM and/or money winners. The ROM were Rocky Lolly Bar, Rocky Billy Bar, Lolly 11, Cougar Jack and the money winners were Princess Lolly and Royal Leo Bar. Rocky Lolly Bar was superior in cutting with an AQHA Championship. She earned $21,291.20 in the NCHA with the NCHA Bronze Award. Oklahoma Rosie was the dam of nine foals with five performers with four arena ROM; 2 AQHA Champions and one Superior performer. The first Oklahoma Rosie foal was Oklahoma Hank by Harlan. This 1956 Dun Stallion became an ROM performer in the AQHA with 30 performance points and three halter points. He was an NCHA Certificate of Ability winner with $2,394.54 in earnings. Oklahoma Hank was the sire of the ROM performer Hank Jr.

Oklahoma Top Hat by Oklahoma Fuel may easily be the most interesting member of the Oklahoma Rosie family. Oklahoma Top Hat is a six time PRCA/AQHA Head Horse of the Year. He won this title in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997, 1998 and 1999. He was second in this balloting in 1996. Oklahoma Top Hat or Scooter as he was called in his rodeo arena career is considered by many to be the greatest head horse to ever live. Charles Pogue was the owner of this great gelding during his successful run in the arena. Pogue estimated in THE ROPING PEN story “The Legendary Scooter Passes Away” that he won well over $1,000,000 on Scooter. Rick Skelton was one of several partners that roped with Pogue and Scooter. He is quoted stating the following in THE ROPING PEN story, “Scooter was a great horse from his first rodeo til the day he died. When Charles first started riding him he was really mature for his age (6). Charles’ dad told me one time, ‘You can’t judge a horse by how much you win on him, but by how much he keeps you from winning.’ Scooter never cost Charles a dime.” Here are some examples of what Skelton was talking

The next Oklahoma Rosie foal was Yellow Hankie by Prince Hank. Prince Hank was a son of Hank H. This makes Prince Hank a paternal half brother to Harlan. Yellow Hankie was unshown in the AQHA, but she was the dam of 15 foals with 11 performers. Her performers include Mr Troubler, winner of 32 AQHA performance points and 1 halter point. Mr Troubler was sired by Mr Trouble by Parker’s Trouble. Yellow Hankie is the dam of several NCHA money winners including Okie Rosie, winner of $3,037 and an NCHA Certificate of Ability winner. Eagle Rey Ella is the winner of 24 PHBA performance points. She is the dam of Robins Rey Ella, winner of 40 PHBA performance points. Yellow Hankie was the dam of several racing ROM performers including Oklahoma Fleet and Oklahoma Kitaman. Her list of race foals is headed by Oklahoma Fuel, an AAA rated runner that set a track record for 220 yards

Harlan was the sire of several foals out of Oklahoma Rosie. Photo courtesy Bob Robey. Continued on page 22...

This mare was Superior in Western Pleasure and has earned 90 performance points. Oklahoma Rosie foaled Okie Leo Rose by Okie Leo in 1966. This mare was a top roping mare with over 100 AQHA points and a Superior in Calf Roping. This mare found her way into the AQHA High Point Top Ten three times (1972, 1973 and1975). She was in the AQHA World Championship Show Top Ten in Calf Roping in 1975. Okie Leo Rose was the dam of Teddy Bear Rose. Teddy Bear Rose was Superior in tie-down roping with 62 AQHA points. She was the 1985 AQHA High Point Tie-Down Roping Mare. She was the dam of Smoken Teddy, Smoken Teddy was a PHBA Amateur World Champion and Open Reserve World Champion in 1995. This gelding was Superior in the AQHA in Heeling with 56 open and 12 amateur points. Okies Invester was an unshown daughter of Okie Leo Rose. She is a producer with foals like Invest O Pep. Invest O Pep was an ROM performer with 28.5 AQHA points and was an NCHA money winner. Rosies Invester was a full sister to Okies Invester with both of them being sired by The Invester. Rosies Invester was ROM in the arena with 22 open, 4.5 youth and 3 novice youth points. She was the dam of several performers including Stingvester. Stingvester was a PHBA Reserve World Champion with 83 halter and 304 performance points in the PHBA. EBG Rosie Asset was another daughter of Rosies Invester. This mare won $4,831.10 in the NSBA. Oklahoma Rosie went back to the court of Harlan to produce Rosanna Harlan in 1967. This mare earned 9 AQHA performance points. She was the dam of Topsail Harlan, an AQHA ROM show horse with 27 points. Her second performer was Topsail Goldspinner, an ROM show horse with 13.5 Page 26

points. Both of these performers were sired by Topsail Cody. The last foal out of Oklahoma Rosie was Scooter Rose Ed by Scooter Ed. This mare earned one performance point and she was the dam of one point earner in Codie Rose by Topsail Cody. This show horse earned four performance points. Codie Rose was the dam of Shining Codied Rose, an NRCHA money winner. Oklahoma Rosie is buried beside Harlan so Bob doesn’t have to make that decision about which one to choose. He had the best of both worlds with this great stallion and mare leaving him with some great memories and a legacy of great quarter horses.

It is the legacy that Oklahoma Rosie left behind that made this great mare one of our mares with more. Larry Thornton is a pedigree analyst and breeding consultant. Life is full of trials and tribulations. It seems as though we work and work to get ahead and then something happens to lose some of what we work for. The horse business is full of these trials and tribulations. You make a move or business decision that works and that can give you the opportunity to move ahead. It is most likely buying or breeding a top horse and then the sky falls as we lose that horse. Just ask Carol Rose the all time leading breeder of performance quarter horses. Carol Rose bought a stallion named Zan Parr Bar back in 1970’s. She put Zan Parr Bar on the road to success. He became a three time AQHA World Champion Halter Stallion. He was a noted performance horse that excelled in roping. Zan Parr Bar retired to the breeding barn to become one of the great all-around sires in the quarter horse industry. Then tragedy struck and Zan Parr Bar died. Sad at the loss of her great stallion Carol was undaunted as she had a replacement in the barn. He was Zans Diamond Sun a son of Zan Parr Bar and the great mare Diamonds Sparkle. Zans Diamond Sun became a World Champion performance horse and then just as he was establishing his sire record, he died. This is often the name of the game in the horse business. We have all come to the realization that we are going to lose some of our horses at one time or another. But we have also learned that there is often another horse to replace what we have lost and that is just what happened to Carol Rose. She had another replacement in the barn. His name was Genuine Doc, another Carol Rose bred performer and sire. Genuine Doc was sired by Doc Bar and out of Carol’s great cutting mare Gay Bar’s Gen. This mare and Carol were three times NCHA Non-Pro World Champions in 1967, 1968 and 1969. Genuine Doc was an NCHA Open Futurity Semi-Finalist. He was the Augusta Non-Pro Futurity Champion. He was a finalist in the NCHA Open Super Stakes and a third place finisher in the NCHA Non-Pro Derby. They won the AQHA Junior Cutting at Fort Worth with over 108 in the event. Genuine Doc later won the AQHA Senior Cutting at Houston. Page 32

Genuine Doc was the AQHA Reserve World Champion in the Senior Cutting in 1985. An added note: Genuine Doc was not the first Doc Bar foal out of Gay Bar’s Gen. Genuine Doc had a full sister. She died as a yearling. Some more of the trials and tribulation Carol has experienced in the horse business. Doc Bar

and a sixth place finisher in the NRCHA Open Derby.

Horse Club World Champion Junior Reining Horse.

Nics Diamond Black takes this linebreeding pattern in another direction. The dam of this colt is Shinersdiamondjackie. She is by Shining Spark and out of Zans Diamond Jackie. This makes her inbred to Diamonds Sparkle.

A Shiner Named Sioux is the winner of the 2009 Kalpowar Open Futurity and Open Stakes. He was a top ten finalist in the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity and the high scorer in the Snaffle Bit Futurity Reining division. He was a finalist in the NRHA Open, Intermediate and Limited Open Futurity. He is just beginning his sire career.

The sire of Nics Diamond Black is Nic It In The Bud. Nic It In The Bud is out of Genuine Redbud by Genuine Doc, the sire of Shining Spark. This gives Nics Diamond Black a breeding pattern of 2 X 3 to Genuine Doc while his dam has a breeding pattern of 2 X 3 to Diamonds Sparkle. In 2009 Carol lost another up and coming stallion named Smart Shiner. This son of Shining Spark was earning a reputation as a sire on the rise. Smart Shiner was a full brother to Smart Shinetta, the fourth leading money winner sired by Shining Spark. Smart Shiner was an NRHA Intermediate Open Derby Champion. He is the sire of foals like Smart And Shiney, winner of $101,625 as a finalist in such events as the NRHA Open Derby. Robin Glenn Pedigrees tells us that 31 of Smart Shiner’s money winners have taken in $366,708 in the arena. Carol has two more sons of Shining Spark in the wings in Shiners Lena Doc and A Shiner Named Sioux. Shiners Lena Doc is the winner of over $90,000 in competition serving as the Reserve Champion of events like the National Reining Breeders Classic 4/6 Year Old Open. Shiners Lena Doc is the sire of Shiners Lena Dust, 2009 AQHA World Champion Junior Reining Horse and Justin Lena Doc, an Appaloosa

Page 52

The old adage “great sires have great mothers” is certainly true in the case of Shining Spark and his brother Zans Diamond Sun. Both of these stallions proved to be outstanding sires and they were sons of a very special mare. The loss of Zans Diamond Sun meant he was unable to continue as a major player in the breeding world but Shining Spark has been able to carry on through the Carol Rose breeding program. All of this has been possible

because Carol Rose hit the trials and tribulations she has faced with the loss of Zan Parr Bar and Zans Diamond Sun head on. This is another reason why Carol Rose Quarter Horses is the all time leading breeder of AQHA performance horses.

Kay Lynn Schulz and KS Dox Cajun Bug - Top Elite Barrel Racing’s Classic Equine Big Cash Getaway.

Kay Lynn Schulz and her homegrown gelding KS Dox Cajun Bug topped Elite Barrel Racing’s debut event, the Classic Equine Big Cash Getaway, held May 14-16 in the Show Pavilion at the Heart O’ Texas Complex in Waco, Texas. The mother of two from San Antonio, Texas, pocketed $4,000 for winning the 1D Championship of the $75,000 Guaranteed 6D Race. She also took home a Sherry Cervi Crown C Martin Saddle with a lime green gator seat and accents. “He worked perfectly,” Schulz said of her gelding. “The ground was there and he really worked. This is unreal.” Schulz grew up competing in local barrel racing associations and youth and open rodeo. She attended Texas A&M University and qualified for the College Nationals Finals. “We’ve just always bought horses that we could afford and tried to make it work,” she said. “He’s a once-in-alifetime horse. He’s home raised and we trained him.” Cajun, a 7-year-old gelding, is by PC Dox Cajun, a deceased son of Boon Dox John out of a Sun Frost-Orphan Drift mare, and out of a Lady Bug Bug, a granddaughter of the all-time leading broodmare sire of barrel horses, Bugs Alive In 75. Schulz competed on the mare before an arthritic knee forced her retirement. Cajun was a family project with Schulz and her sister both training and competing on the gelding between Schulz’s pregnancies. Schulz has two boys, Sterling, 3, and Mason, 7 months, with husband Steve, a team roper, and her barrel racing and rodeo schedule is carefully planned around her family and job in a dental office. “My husband would like for me to make the Texas circuit finals,” she said, “but I’m just happy when I get a check!” The Classic Equine Big Cash Getaway awarded more than $128,000 in cash and prizes. Sponsors for the event included Classic Equine, Corral Boots, Oxy-Gen, Safe-Guard, Rockies, Cruel Girls and Cinch Jeans as well as Industrial Plant and Pipeline Supply. The next Big Cash Getaway will be Sept. 4-6, Labor Day weekend, at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum in Ardmore, Okla.

We would like to congratulate our long time friends and consignors Jake and Clay Smith of Broken Bow, OK. The sixteen and eighteen year old brother team won the #13 Preliminary and the #13 Shoot-Out Roping at the 2009 Cinch USTRC National Finals Team Roping in Oklahoma City in October. The pair won $141,000 and are still just as humble and polite as you will ever meet. Jake & Clay have won over 100 saddles between the two of them and Clay has won three pick up trucks. You will definitely see them win a lot more in the future. The Smith Family trains and rides horses from colts to finished roping horses and has a few in every Triangle Sale. Mark & Tammy Smith have raised 3 outstanding competitors, Jake, Clay and Britt. The youngest, Britt will take your money in the dummy roping so don’t let the little guy fool you. He’s won the dummy roping at the NFR 4 years in a row and has won 5 saddles. At the age of eight he’s a talented young man that has a future just like his big brothers. The Smith’s will always make you feel welcome in Broken Bow, Ok. They are kind of like Motel 6, they will leave the light on. That’s the kind of people they are.

Junior D Hancock

We will be selling colts out of these mare's. Watch our 2 Year Olds perform Friday evening and they will sell Saturday in our sale along with some good broke horses.

Legends of Ranching Sale Report

(HB Good Witch High Seller of 2010 LOR Performance Horse Sale) -- 2010 Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale High Seller: HB Good Witch consigned by Mike Wilson, Tatum NM ; photo shows (left to right, front row) Collette Wilson (holding horse), Peter J. Cofrancesco, AQHA First Vice President; Lee Liles, Equine Sciences Advisory Committee member and contact for Billy Cook Saddles (award); Mike Wilson; Gary Carpenter, CSU Equine Sciences Director of Outreach and Industry Relations. On the auction block is Jim Ware, announcer and Equine Sciences Advisory Committee member.

Hb Good Witch Standing In The Ring.High Seller of the 2010 Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale was HB Good Witch. The 2004 sorrel mare sold for $20,000 and was consigned by Mike Wilson, Tatum, NM and was sold by auctioneer Don Green and announcer Jim Ware (both on auction block, left to right respectively), both members of the CSU Equine Sciences Advisory Committee.

Colorado State University Equine Sciences Hosts Successful Legends of Ranching Sale FORT COLLINS - The fifth annual Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale was held on April 24 at the B.W. Pickett Equine Center at Colorado State University. Twenty-two consignors representing eight states sold 64 horses for an average sale price of $4,734, a 9.8 percent increase from last year. The high-selling horse was HB Good Witch, a 2004 chestnut mare from Mike Wilson of Tatum, N.M., that sold for $20,000. Consigners included Abraham Equine; Bartlett Ranches; Pete Becker Ranch Inc.; Bogle Ltd. Co.; Bucholz Family; Burnett Ranches; The Four Sixes Ranch (6666); Cowan Select Horses, LLC; Crofoot Ranches; Hanging H Ranch; Haythorn Ranch Co.; KeSa Quarter Horses; Mantz Creek Horses; Purina Mills; S Ranch Ltd.; Saunders Ranch; Singleton Ranches; T-Cross Ranches; Valley Oak Ranch; Wagonhound Land & Livestock; Ware Ranch; Mike Wilson; and Wood Ranch. University Distinguished Professor and Equine Sciences Interim Director Gordon Niswender reflected on the successful studentrun sale. “It was quite a good sale with prices equal to or above sales with similar quality horses. The catalog was responsible for attracting an increased number of buyers this year. It was obvious this was a well-organized and well-operated sale and the students did an excellent job,” he said. An estimated 1,000 people attended the event. Niswender said the sale seemed to attract more industry professionals from all over the country than in previous years. Colorado State University Equine Sciences will host next year’s Legends of Ranching Sale on April 16, 2011. For more details on the 2010 sale results, visit www.csuequine.com.-30Page 70
