It all started back in 1971, Norman Ruback, was looking for a show mare. He found Magnolia Gay Magnolia Gay with her trainer Jim Wilke. Photo Courtesy The American Quarter Horse Journal.
W
When you look back on the history of the quarter horse you will see how the halter class played a significant role in the development of the performance quarter horse. The early shows included halter classes and at times the judge would want to see how that horse worked under saddle before naming the winner. The great historical DVD “From The Beginning shows legendary Judge Jim Minnick riding one of the horses he was judging before he placed the class. This demonstrates how conformation of the horse is related to his performance. Page 18
As time progressed we found that the modern quarter horse remained a versatile breed in that they competed in a variety of events. But the difference was that the different lines became noted for their ability to perform at a high level in single events or similar events. The different lines of quarter horses became specialized in their signature event. This held true for the modern halter horse. The halter class became a specialized area that became a separate entity on its own. The AQHA has taken a step to move the pendulum back with the performance halter class. A horse competing in this event must have a performance Register of Merit. It is this class that allows us to recall one of the great halter mares of the past. Her name is Magnolia Gay and her show record makes her one of our mares with more as a halter mare that performed. THE WORKING HORSE •MARCH 2010
Magnolia Gay BY: LARRY THORNTON It all started back in 1971, Norman Ruback of Omaha, Nebraska, was looking for a show mare. He found Magnolia Gay and bought her from Jerry Wells. He put the mare in the hands of Jim Wilke and he didn’t waste any time showing the mare. He hauled her to more than 50 shows as a yearling and won all but one. The only place they lost was in their hometown of Omaha. Thus the legend of Magnolia Gay the show mare was born and she was on her way to the top. Along the way, Ruback picked up a partner in Gail Ross from Barrington Hills, Illinois. Ross and Ruback shared the ownership of Magnolia Gay through her glory years as a show horse. Wilke went on the road in 1972 with the High Point Halter Horse title as the goal. Magnolia Gay and her trainer reached their goal in 119 shows with 114 firsts and five seconds. The mare earned 85 Grand Championships and 19 Reserve Championships. The legend continued to grow as Wilke let Magnolia Gay take it easy as a three-year-old. She was only the 7th place high point halter horse for 1973. It was at this point that she did start to pick up some pleasure points. Wilke and Magnolia Gay earned their second high point halter title in 1974. We’ll let Wilke tell how it happened, “As a four-year-old, I was hauling five or six horses all the time and Magnolia Gay just came along. I showed her sparingly, only when I felt like it. She hardly ever got beat.” Wilke continued, “Maple Mischief was hauling for the high point title. She was going to be honor roll halter horse. Low and behold, she died in July or August. So without ever trying or knowing, Magnolia Gay was right on the heels of Maple Mischief point wise. Mr. Ruback thought what the heck; it’s like looking a gift horse in the mouth, so we just benefited from a bad situation. We really didn’t change a thing, I showed her when I felt like it and she was an honor roll horse again. We never did put in the same kind of effort we did when she won it as a 2 year old.” So Magnolia Gay earned her second High Point Halter Horse Award and the next year (1975) was another off year. All Magnolia Gay did was finish as the 8th place High Point Halter Horse as well as finish her Superior Award in Western Pleasure. The next phase in Magnolia Gay’s life would begin at the All American Congress in 1975. Duane Noble was looking to buy his wife a horse. Noble explained it this way, “My wife (Barbara) had never owned a horse. I was talking to Norman Ruback. I had called him about a two-year-old that he had in the Journal.” “While we were talking, he said, ‘Why don’t you buy Magnolia Gay?” continued on page 22... THE WORKING HORSE • MARCH 2010

“I said, ‘I can’t buy Magnolia Gay, she’s one of the most famous horses in the country.’ We talked on and he hung up.” “My wife said, ‘What’s this Magnolia Gay?’ I told her about the horse and the points and what a great halter horse she was.” “She said, ‘Well, how much did he want?’ I hadn’t even asked.” “She said, ‘You said I could have a horse.’ “I said, ‘What are you going to do with this horse?’ “She said, ‘Raise babies! If she’s that good, she should be a great broodmare. You call him back.” Noble continued the story with what took place when they went to the Congress to see Magnolia Gay in person. “My wife is 5 feet tall and when Jim Wilke stripped off about 18 layers of blankets in the stall, my wife stood up under that horse’s neck and said, This horse is mine.’ And that’s how I bought Magnolia Gay.”
Despite the success that Magnolia Gay had had in the show arena, the Nobles were not satisfied; they wanted to make her an AQHA Champion. So they put her in training with Jack Denton as a team roping horse. As Duane put it, “Everybody darn near died because we were going to rope off that mare.” Magnolia Gay became an AQHA Champion in 1976 when she added 3 heading points and 6 heeling points. Jim Wilke was not surprised by Magnolia Gay’s ability as a rope mare. He had roped some steers at home with her. Wilke felt Magnolia Gay was an athlete that could have been a top cow horse. Wilke proudly reports, ” If she hadn’t been a show horse, as far as the halter goes, she could have been a great cow horse. She was very, very cowy and quite an athlete for her size and bulk.” He continued, “While we had her, I showed her in pleasure quite a few times as an older horse. I remember if it was the least bit muddy or the arena was cloddy, Mr. Ruback wouldn’t let me show her. All he needed was a small excuse to not show her. He hated to see her dirty or muddy. But she was a natural, absolutely natural pleasure horse. I wasn’t the best, yet, I broke her and trained her and there were people a heck of a lot better than I was, but we qualified her for the World in pleasure.” continued on page 26...

So with her Championship completed, Magnolia Gay set out on her new career as Barbara Noble’s broodmare. She is the dam of 12 foals with 9 performers to her credit. Her first foal was Noble Impression. He has a show record but no points earned. The second foal out of this mare was Super Solo by Swift Solo. Super Solo was seventh in the 1981 AQHA World Show Yearling Stallions. The next year she foaled Noble Successor, a winner of 19 AQHA halter points. He was the second of several Impressive foals out of Magnolia Gay.
“She was very, very cowy and quite an athlete for her size and bulk.” Magnolias Choice was tenth in the 1983 AQHA World Show Weanling Mare class. She also earned four open and three amateur halter points. Master Impressed was the 1984 foal of Magnolia Gal. He was a Superior Halter Horse with 60 points. He as a top ten finalist in the AQHA World Show twice, once as a yearling and once as a two-year-old. He earned 60 AQHA halter points. Lady Gay Magnolia was foaled in 1985. She won 20 AQHA halter points. She in turn was the dam of Miss Du Impress. Miss Du Impress earned 106.5 open halter points, 11 open performance points and 73.5 amateur halter points. This gave her the Superior Award in open and amateur halter. Miss Du Impress is the dam of Your Such A Kid, winner of 16 AQHA open halter points and 6.5 amateur halter points. Lady Gay Magnolia was the dam of Dudes Miss Shameless. She was the winner of 25 AQHA halter points. She was a full sister to Miss Du Impress. Their full sister was Angelina Dude. This mare earned 12 AQHA open and amateur halter points. She in turn was the dam of Sheza Sexy Babe. Sheza Sexy Babe earned 24 AQHA halter points earning a halter ROM. Shes Hot N Sexy, out of Angelina Dude, was ROM in open and amateur halter. She earned 26 AQHA open and amateur halter points. A Classic Kid was Angelina Dude’s 2004 foal. He became an AQHA Superior Halter Horse. He earned 59 AQHA open and amateur halter points. He also earned 35 PHBA halter points. Noble Tradition was the 1987 foal of Impressive and Magnolia Gay. This stallion earned four AQHA World Championships and one AQHA Reserve World Championship. He was the 1987 AQHA World Champion Weanling Stallion; 1988 AQHA World Champion Yearling Stallion; 1989 AQHA World Champion Two-Year-Old Stallion and the 1990 AQHA World Champion Three-Year-Old Stallion and the 1991 AQHA Reserve World Champion Aged Halter Stallion. Most people would be surprised to find that Noble Tradition has only 11 halter points with his four World Champion ships. It seems he went to the World Show and won his championship and then came home till the next time. (All World Champions have an automatic bid to return to the World Championships for the next year.) Noble Tradition was the 1989 Grand Champion Stallion at the All American Quarter Horse Congress, the largest show in the nation. His unique record certainly speaks for itself. Page 26
Noble Tradition has sired some interesting world champions of his own. He sired Sacred, multiple World Champion and All American Quarter Horse Congress Grand Champion. Sacred is the dam of the AQHA Reserve World Champion The Sacred Touch. The Tardee Tradition was a multiple World Champion in the AQHA and the PHBA sired by Noble Tradition. He was the 1996 AQHA High Point Open Halter Stallion as well. The next foal out of Magnolia Gay was Emulience. She was an AQHA Superior Halter Horse. She earned 54.5 AQHA open halter points and 14.5 AQHA amateur halter points. Her full brother was Noble Connection, who was unshown. The last three foals out of Magnolia Gal were Noble Renaissance by Impressive, Noble Hermano by Impressive and Maggie Lil One by The Intimidator. The one of these foals with a show record was Noble Renaissance and he had no points to report. Wilke feels he knew Magnolia Gay about as good as anyone could have known the mare. When asked what made this mare such a great halter horse, he replied, “She had such an incredible body with so much shoulder and so much hip, so much muscle that the judges seemed to overlook her weaknesses.” Wilke fur ther explained that she was such an early maturing horse that she was an aged horse before the rest of them began to catch up with her. Wilke added that Magnolia Gay’s awesome shoulder and hip lead you to believe that she is a real tall mare, but she is actually only about 15.1 to 15.2 hands. Duane Noble reinforces Wilke’s description with terms like, “tremendous forearm and tremendous gaskin” to describe this great show mare. Noble also saw Magnolia Gay’s thoroughbred heritage in her head that was “elegant” but a little long with a long ear. They both noted that her back was a little long, showing her thoroughbred heritage. Magnolia Gay was foaled in 1970. She was bred by R. D. Burnside of Bellville, Texas. She was sired by Magnolia Pay and out of Deena Gay by Gay Bar King. A first impression of Magnolia Gay’s pedigree seems to indicate that performance should have been her strong suite. But as you look deeper into her pedigree, you see that good conformation is a key ingredient found in her family tree. Her sire Magnolia Pay was an AQHA Supreme Champion that had earned an AAA rating on the track, winning five races and earning $2,300. He was a stakes winner with a win in the Colorado Stakes. In the show arena, Magnolia Pay had 80 halter points earning the Superior Award. He had 37 western pleasure points, 7 calf roping points, 2 reining points, 1 western riding point and 1 steer roping point. He was an AQHA Champion. The sire of Magnolia Pay was Magnolia Bar, an AAA/AQHA Champion. Magnolia Bar had 25 halter points and was a stakes-winning racehorse with a first place in the 19621 Inaugural at Los Alamitos racetrack in California. The sire of Magnolia Bar was Three Bars. The dam of Magnolia Bar was the AAA running mare, Lassie’s Dream. Lassie’s Dream was the Champion 2 Year Old

Filly in 1955 and a grand champion halter mare. She was a daughter of Bull’s Eye by Joe Reed II. Lassie’s Dream was the dam of three foals and all three foals went AAA on the track. All three foals were sired by Three Bars. The dam of Lassie’s Dream was the mare Lassie Caesar, a successful Quarter running mare in the early days of organ ized Quarter Horse racing. In addition to Lassie’s Dream, Lassie Caesar was the dam of Blonde Joan, a champion on the track (a full sister to Lassie’s Dream) and Lassie’s Pride, an AAA runner. Lassie Caesar was sired by Babe Grande by Old Sorrel and her dam was Miss Dexter by Dexter. The dam of Magnolia Pay was Miss Pay Day B by Pay Day by Joe Moore. Miss Pay Day B was the dam of 9 goals with performers. She was the dam of Register of Merit Quarter running horses with 2 AAA rated and 3 AA rated. Two of her foals were stakes winners including Magnolia Pay in the Colorado Stakes and Miss Bracket Pay in the West Texas Quarter Horse Futurity. In the arena, Miss Pay Day B is the dam of 2 halter point earners in Magnolia Pay and Mr Bar Pay, the earner of 29 halter points. Mr Bar Pay was a full brother to Magnolia Pay. Pay Day was a race ROM sire that has shown a great deal of influence on the Quarter Horse through his daughter Dou ble Life. Double Life is the dam of Two D Two, the sire of Two Eyed Jack. Two Eyed Jack is the leading sire of AQHA Champi ons with 149 to his credit.] Joe Moore was a son of the great Quarter Horse foundation sire Little Joe. Little Joe was a top Quarter running horse in Texas that became the sire of such noted horses as Zantanon. Zantanon was the sire of King P-234. Della Moore was the dam of Joe Moore. She was a great race mare that became the mother of another great stallion, Joe Reed P-3, foundation sire of the Joe Reed Family of Quarter Horses. The late Bob Denhardt called Della Moore a “matriarch of the Quarter Horse breed,” because of her two great sons, Joe Reed and Joe Moore. Pay Day was out of the mare Paulita who was sired by Paul Ell by Hickory Bill. The dam of Paulita was Adalina by Little Joe, the sire of Joe Moore. Miss Pay Day B was out of a mare called Sue B who was sired by the thoroughbred Salutation. Her dam was Evangeline by Little Joe. This makes Miss Pay Day B 3 X 4X3 linebred to Little Joe. Deena Gay was the dam of Magnolia Gay. Deena Gay was shown but earned no points. She is the dam of 12 foals with 9 performers. Her performers include Gay Deena Bars by Gar Bar King, earner of 3 performance points; Primero Pay, earner of 3 halter and 16 performance points (ROM), Deena Pay, earner of 111 halter points (Superior), Miss Mag nolia Pay, earner of 3 halter points, Ruf fian Pay, earner of 51 open halter points (Superior), 17 youth halter and 2 youth performance points, all by Magnolia Pay and Gay Doc Lynx, earner of 5 performance points and $4,946.47 in the NCHA with a Certificate of Ability. He was sired by Doc’s Lynx. The sire of Deena Gay was Gay Bar King. Gay Bar King was an A rated racehorse with 13 halter points and 6 cutting
Page 30
points. His sire was Three Bars and his dam of Gay Widow. This second cross of Three Bars gives Magnolia Gay a 3 X 3 breeding pattern to Three Bars. Gay Bar King was a noted sire that will be remembered as an excellent brood mare sire. Gay Bar King was the sire of many great show horses including Mr Bar Gold, an AQHA High Point Junior Cutting Horse that had Superior Awards in Cut ting and Halter. Gay Bar’s Gen, by Gay Bar King, was an NCHA Non-Pro Champion three times. She is the dam of Genuine Doc, an AQHA Reserve World Champion Cutting Horse and successful sire of show horses. Gay Bar Lady was a top halter and cutting mare by Gay Bar King. She was the dam of Sugs Gay lady, an NCHA Super Stakes winner with earnings in excess of $300,000 and Doc Ware, an AQHA Reserve World Champion Cutting Horse. Gay Bar King was out of Gay Widow. In a 1989 interview the legendary trainer Mat-lock Rose described Gay Widow as a “pretty mare” who was a “standout halter mare with class that could compete with the modern day horse.” Rose considered Gay Widow to be the “best reining pony” he ever rode. Gay Widow was sired by King P-234 by Zantanon by Little Joe. The dam of Gay Widow was Happy Gal by Graves Peeler, a full brother to Pep-Up, the broodmare sire of Mr San Peppy and Peppy San, both NCHA World Champions and leading sires of cutting horses. The sire of Graves Peeler was Macanudo by Old Sorrel and the dam was Petra R2, a daughter of Little Richard by Old Sorrel. The dam of Deena Gay was Deena Joyce. Deena Joyce was the dam of only three foals. None of them were point earners. Deena Joyce was a daughter of Fourble Joe. Fourble Joe was a good son of King P-234 who was out of a daughter of King P-234. These last two shots of Little Joe blood through King P-234 makes Magnolia Gay 5X6X5X6X6X7 linebred to Little Joe though seven generations.
A couple of important points can be brought out in the crossing of Magnolia Pay and the Gay Bar King mare Deena Gay. The record of their offspring indicates that this was a very good cross. But as we delve deeper, we find a very good nick between Magnolia Pay and the Gay Bar King mares. Gay Magnolia was sired by Magnolia Pay and out of Karen Gay Bar by Gay Bar King. Gay Magnolia was the earner of 567 halter points and 19 working points. Pay’s Gidget, Pay Bars and Pay Stinger were sired by Magnolia Pay and out of Gay Bar’s Gidget by Gay Bar King. Pay’s Gidget is the earner of 39 halter points, 4 working points and 14 youth halter points. Pay Stinger earned 69 halter points, 36 work ing points including 27 western pleasure points, 1 reining point and 8 heading points. Pay Bars was the earner of 6 halter points and 20 working points. continued on page 34..

So the cross of Magnolia Pay and Gay Bar King mares appears to be a very good one. But in our discussion, Wilke focused in on another interesting situation with the pedigree of Magnolia Pay and Magnolia Gay. Wilke had shown another great halter mare named Ever Rapid who was sired by a Three Bars line stallion and out of a double-bred Hobo mare. Hobo was a good son of Joe Moore. This would follow the pattern that we saw in Magnolia Pay and, of course, the linebreeding in Magnolia Gay to Three Bars and Little Joe. Wilke believes that it is smart for a breeder to follow what has proven to be successful whether we can explain why it is successful or not. He believes that the success of Magnolia Pay and the Gay Bar King mares proves the practice of mating animals that “nick.”
The success of Magnolia Gay allows us to look back on how it was when it came to halter horses that performed. Her legend as a performing halter horse certainly makes her a Mare with More. We need more like her.

INTRODUCTION
What you are about to read is a little bit of the history of four legendary horsemen that made Routt County in Colorado the home of some of the greatest Quarter Horses and Appaloosas to ever contribute to their respective breeds. Routt County is like several other areas where Quarter Horses and Appaloosas as we know them today got their start. Some of the other places would include South Texas around Alice and Southwest Oklahoma an area we know today as the “Cradle of Modern Quarter Horse Racing.” Routt County with towns like Steamboat Springs, Clark and Hayden within its borders was the home of Si Dawson, Coke Roberds, Marshall Peavy and Quentin Semotan. These four breeders must be credited with forming the bloodline that we know today as the Old Fred/Peter McCue cross.
This picture of Old Fred shows the quality of this stallion and that tells us why Coke Roberds liked him so much. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum.
Evelyn Peavy Semotan wrote the history you are about to read. Evelyn was there to document this history first hand and she did her homework using a variety of sources to confirm her information and expand on it. She was at one time married to Lawrence Peavy, the brother of Marshall Peavy. She was then married to Quentin Semotan, who along with Evelyn bred their own branch of this quarter horse family. Evelyn even filled out the paper work for Coke Roberds to register his horses with the American Quarter Horse Association. Our access to this information was made possible through Jo Semotan, the daughter of Quentin and Evelyn. The plan is to let Evelyn tell the story and then at strategic points add some information to reinforce how each of these breeders contributed to the scheme of things. Here we go with “The Race Is On” a history of Routt County Quarter Horses as Evelyn Peavy Semotan remembered it.
In the first days of this race these horses were called “Steel Dusts” or “Short Horses” and now we call them quarter horses. In this race the four major men were Si Dawson, Coke Roberds, Marshal Peavy and Quentin Semotan. The first of the four proven horse breeders was Si Dawson. Si was born March 30, 1870, in Dawson, the territory of New Mexico. He lost his left hand in a roping accident while still a young man; but that didn’t stop this great man. When Si came back from school in Columbia, Mo, the Dawson Ranch in New Mexico sold for a quarter-of-a-million dollars. The Dawson’s came to Routt County and bought a ranch near Hayden, Colorado in 1900. (This ranch is now the Ferry Carpenter Ranch.) Another horseman in this area also came from New Mexico. Coke Roberds came to Routt County in 1908. He beat Si out of the gate to have the first great horses in this country.
I]Z GVXZ >h Dc THE RACE IS ON
This story is about the race in Routt County to make a horse that stands about 14 and one-half to sixteen hands high. He should have a slim neck, well proportioned muscling, be well balanced, speed, surefooted and most of all have brains. Page 36
Coke Roberds was born August 29, 1870 in West Texas where his father had moved before the Civil War. Just before Coke was school age, they moved to Trinidad, Colorado. Coke was a true rancher and was good with both cattle and horses. THE WORKING HORSE •MARCH 2010

After going to College in the east, Coke went back to West Texas and went to work on the Holland Easley Ranch. While there a fellow came by with some Steel Dust mares that were for sale. Coke bought nine of these mares. One horse is left out of this and that is a horse referred to today as Arab. Arab was an Appaloosa. He was the first stallion bred to the nine Steel Dust mares owned by Roberds. Frank Holmes in his book SPOTTED PRIDE indicates that Arab was sired by a horse known as the “Circus Horse.” The Circus Horse, an appaloosa, was bred to one of Roberds mares producing Arab, an Appaloosa stallion.

After settling in Hayden, Colorado, on what is now the Leonard Flanders Ranch, Coke made many trips to Wolcott to get household goods. On one of these trips to Wolcott, he met a freighter named Bud Laughlin. Coke saw a palomino horse in a Freight Team and tried trading for him. That didn’t work so he tried to buy him. After an hour or so Coke bought Fred for three-hundred dollars. As soon as Coke got done in Wolcott, he came back through Yampa and picked Fred up. He couldn’t have Old Fred right then because the freighter had Old Fred as a wheel horse and needed him to get home. continued from page 40... THE WORKING HORSE • MARCH 2010

Later he bought Primero, a thoroughbred stallion by Leadville. He crossed Primero with some Steel Dust mares and got some very fine colts. Coke moved to the higher altitude for health reasons. While on the train ride from West Texas to Wolcott the nearest railhead to Hayden the train derailed. To Coke, it was a very tragic wreck because Primero was badly injured. When the train got to Wolcott, Coke’s stallion, Primero died. It was a great loss to Coke, but he still had his Steel Dust mares and Primero colts.

Fred was by Black Ball by Rondo and out of a mare by John Crowder by Old Billy. Fred was bred in Springfield, Missouri. Coke was the first one to leave the starting gate in this race in Routt County but Si Dawson wasn’t far behind. Sheik P-11 was one of the AQHA officially registered foundation sires with number 2 through 19. . He was bred by Coke Roberds giving us a first hand example of the evolution of the Coke Roberds breeding program. His dam was a daughter of Old Fred and she was out of a mare named Primera by Primero. Roberds was also the breeder of Colorado Queen. Colorado Queen was the dam of the quarter horse Plaudit, who was very influential in the Hank Wiescamp and Warren Shoemaker breeding programs. After spending a few days at Overland Park, a racetrack in Denver, Colorado and watching the three hundred horses there, Coke and Si both liked a chestnut horse called Buck Thomas by Peter McCue. It was the first time either Coke or Si had heard of Peter McCue. Both men decided to bring the Peter McCue bloodline to Routt County. The role of Buck Thomas in all this is very interesting because there was two Buck Thomas’. The first Buck Thomas was the chestnut horse talked about here by Eveyln. The second Buck Thomas was another son of Peter McCue that was bred by Coke Roberds. This Buck Thomas was out of Stockings an Old Fred mare. This Buck Thomas was used by the Waggoner Ranch of Vernon, Texas. He is found in Page 40
the pedigrees of such noted horses as Peppy San and Mr San Peppy, modern foundation sires in the cutting horse industry. So, Si, telling his banker he was going on a cattle-buying trip, went to look for Peter McCue and some good cattle, too. Si went all over New Mexico, Texas and still didn’t find the horse he wanted. Since leaving Overland Park in Denver, Si had found out many things about Peter McCue. One time he had five stopwatches on for a quarter of a mile race. Three of the watches timed Peter McCue at twenty-one seconds flat. The other two timers had him a little less than twenty-one seconds. Si Watt was the jockey. Coke said twenty-one seconds was the fastest any horse on earth had run a quarter of a mile. Si Dawson decided to buy the great horse himself if he was able to walk. Si found Peter McCue in Cheyenne, Oklahoma. Milo Burlingame owned him and had bought Peter McCue for ten thousand dollars a few years before. Si bought Peter McCue in 1913 when he was eighteen years old for five thousand dollars. Peter McCue was by Dan Tucker by Barney Owens and out of Nora M by Voltigeur. He was bred by Samuel Watkins of Petersburg, Illinois. Si rode with Peter McCue in a boxcar all the way to Hayden, Colorado, where the railroad had just continued on page 44... come that year. Now Routt County had two great horses: Old Fred and Peter McCue. Si bred Peter McCue to several of his top mares. Those mares that were not bred to Peter McCue were bred to Silver Tail and Wildcat. These two stallions had been on the Dawson Ranch for several years. As we noted above Coke Roberds bred Colorado Queen, dam of the quarter horse Plaudit. Colorado Queen was out of a Silver Tail mare. Some pedigrees show that her dam a Silver Tail mare was sired by Silver Tail and out of a daughter of Silver Tail. This shows the ties between Roberds and Dawson in the scheme of things. Denhardt in his FOUNDATION SIRES OF THE AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE reports that Silver Tail and Wildcat were sons of Jim Ned, the Billy bred stallion that was owned by William Anson. This is interesting because Anson owned Harmon Baker by Peter McCue and he successfully bred him to his Jim Ned mares producing many fine quarter horses. Coke wanted a colt or two from Queen Litz. Queen Litz had a great racing record in New Orleans, Louisiana. Si loaned the Queen to Coke. Coke bred the Queen to Old Fred and got Bob H and Fred Litz. “They both turned out to be something,” stated Coke. For Si Dawson, the race ended in 1914 when the Dawson’s sold their ranch and moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1918 Si moved to Brazil to manage the Fazenda Morungava, a cattle ranch in the State of Parana. Si died a year later of a ruptured appendix. (1919) Before leaving Routt County, Si asked Coke to take care of thirty-five of his best mares until he had a place for them. Si gave Peter McCue to Coke. But as it turned out Si died before he could return. When Mrs. Dawson came back from Brazil after Si’s death
she told Coke, “All of the kids wanted to keep a horse or two. They all live in cities and I think that would be too expensive all the way around.” Coke agreed with her and told her that she should have a horse sale. Mrs. Dawson asked Coke to take care of the details for her. Coke said he would. Coke asked Bob Norell to be the auctioneer. Bob said that he would. Bob asked Coke how much he was charging. Coke said, “Nothing.” Bob said that he wouldn’t charge anything either. This all happened in 1919. The first horse in the ring was Crackerjack. She only brought twenty dollars. Then Coke said that they were going to stop giving these horses away and he bid one-hundred and fifty dollars on the next horse in the ring. The next horse in the ring was Mary McCue. Mary McCue was by Peter McCue and out of First Out, a palomino Fred mare. This is where a young newcomer came into the picture. His name was Marshall Peavy. He finally outbid Coke for the young two-year-old filly and that is where the third man came into the race. A pedigree that accompanied this material gives the pedigree of Mary McCue. She was sired by Peter McCue. Her dam was listed in this pedigree as a Palomino mare by Old Fred. The dam of the Palomino mare was First Out, a full sister to Coke Roberds’ lost stud Primero. Evelyn told that this pedigree was copied directly off of Coke Roberds papers at his home and the date was 1939. Marshall was born in Georgia, on August 22, 1898. He moved to Deep Creek between 1914 and 1916. His mother bought a ranch on upper Deep Creek, which is now the Haystack Ranch, managed by Joe Flores. continued on page 48...

The first great stallion that Marshal had was Bob H. He was by Fred and out of Queen Litz. Bob H was born on the Roberds Ranch. He was one of the colts that Coke got when he borrowed Queen Litze from Si. Marshal bought Bob H for five hundred dollars. Marshall loved a good horse. His horses had to be able to work too. Bob H was a running bugger. He was first known for his speed but later proved a top sire for all time. A couple of his better colts were the Old Blue Mare and Papoose. The Old Blue Mare was the dam of Papoose and another mare named Flossie. The Old Blue Mare was sired by Bob H and out of a Roberds mare by Primero. The second dam of the Old Blue Mare was another Roberds mare by Arab and out of a Steel Dust Mare. The Old Blue Mare proved to be one of the all time great foundation mares in the Appaloosa. She is found in the pedigrees of such noted Appaloosas as Norell’s Little Red, Peavy Bimbo and Wapiti. Bob H lived only a few years. Around the Peavy Ranch there were never any sheep so many of Marshal’s horses had never seen a sheep. Bob H was a cow horse. When Bob H saw a band of sheep coming up the road, he started running around the pasture scared half to death. Someone, while cleaning the barn, had left a pitchfork out and the wind had blown it down. Poor old Bob H ran across the pitchfork and it flew up and struck him in the belly. It was a terrible day for Marshall. In 1923, Coke lost another great stallion. Peter McCue died at the age of twenty-eight.
was Si, out of Flossie. (You will recall that Flossie was out of the Old Blue Mare.) Mary (Marshall’s daughter) said that her father turned Saladin out in the pasture one morning and when he looked out a couple of hours later Saladin was having a very bad spell. He was rolling, quivering and was very sick. The vet said that he had probably gotten water hemlock. About this time several men from Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and New Mexico had started the beginning of the American Quarter Horse Association. The beginning of the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association was a group of dedicated horseman in Marshall Peavy, Quentin Semotan, Dewey Norell, Del Owens, Jack Casement and a few other interested horsemen. Marshall Peavy, Jack Casement and Quentin Semotan were the Colorado Directors of the beginning of the American Quarter Horse Association. In 1941 Marshall took Margie and Monty to Phoenix, Arizona. Margie was Grand Champion Quarter Mare. She was later crowned Grand Champion of all breeds. She was the fastest mare in the speed trial. She was also five months in foal. Monty did pretty well too. He sure did pay the feed bill. Margie was sired by Ding Bob and out of Papoose by Bob H. Ding Bob was sired by Brown Dick. His dam was Mary McCue. Papoose was out of the Old Blue Mare. In 1940 another great addition was added to the Peavy horses. His name was Gold Heels. He won the first Colorado Quarter Horse Futurity with Jack Phillips up; weight was one hundred and sixty five pounds. The next winter he was Grand Champion Quarter Horse Stallion of the National Western Stock Show. Gold Heels was sired by Si by Saladin. His dam was Beulah by Coke T (Prince). Beulah was out of Myrtle S. Coke T (Prince) was out of Stockings, the dam of Buck Thomas. December third in 1943, Marshall moved to West Plains, Colorado. Marshall and his daughter Biddy were out doctoring a calf with bugs in its head. Monty, Marshall’s favorite cow horse, stepped in a badger hole. Monty tried desperately to stay on his feet, but with a calf on the other end of the rope he could not do it. Marshall died soon after and was buried back on Deep Creek. Monty was never ridden again.
Ding Bob was a son of Mary McCue. He was bred by Marshall Peavy and later owned by Quentin and Eveyln Semotan. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum
It was about this time that Marshall married a young schoolteacher, Mavis Caldwell. The Peavy’s were looking for a new stallion. Marshall bred Mary McCue to Brown Dick, a horse owned by Ben Anderson of the Round Bottom Ranch. From this cross came Ding Bob. Marshall let everyone in the country breed to him. He sired some good ones. Some of these were Saladin, Margie, Sue Peavy and Chipeta and so many good horses. Saladin was bequeathed to Marshall by his brother Lawrence. He was Grand Champion Palomino Stallion at the National Western Stock Show in 1937. His most famous colt Page 48
Marshall’s wife Mavis carried on with the ranch with the help of her daughters Mary Peavy Stees and Biddy Peavy Bonham. Mavis now lives on a ranch near Keota, Colorado. Mary lives three miles above Marshall’s first ranch. Biddy lives northwest of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Quentin Semotan was the last of the four in this race. Quentin was the only one of the four men that was born in Routt County. He was born on his dad’s homestead on Deep Creek. Quentin grew up working with cattle and horses. Quentin as a young man worked for both Coke Roberds and Marshall Peavy. But in the late 1940’s he started his own ranch on the Elk River. (It was known as the Moon Hill Ranch.) In 1945 Quentin Semotan bought Star Duster from Leonard Milligan at the National Stock Show in Denver. Star Duster was by Nowata Star and out of Lowry’s Mabel. continued on page 52...

When Star Duster was a three-year-old, Quentin took him back to Denver where he was shown for grand champion. In his class, Star Duster and Poco Bueno were nose to nose. The judges couldn’t decide who was ahead, so they called in Fred Lowry and another man, making five judges. Fred Lowry recognized the colt by the brand on his left hip, but couldn’t place him; it took him some studying in order for him to remember that he had sold Star Duster as a weaner. In 1948, Semotan took Star Duster back to Denver and showed him again for Grand Champion, and this time he won over Pretty Buck, another Waggoner horse. Star Duster was the Champion of Champions at Fort Worth, which made him a World Champion. Defeating 136 top horses that had been champions during the calendar year. In all they showed Star Duster 47 times and only once did they place second to anyone. Quentin sold Star Duster after owning him for fifteen years, and the only reason he sold him was because he had so many of Star Duster’s daughters. He sold him to Ralph Bell of California. Bell owned him for a couple of years, then he sold him to Thane Lancaster of Idaho. Star Duster died on June 4th 1974 at the age of 30.
Champion with 61 halter points and 21 working points. Four wins for 989 dollars. Steen an AQHA Champion with 23 halter and 37 working points. Petit Duster, a sorrel mare foaled in 1963, became an AQHA Champion by earning 15 halter points and 32 working points. Known mainly as a broodmare sire, Star Duster is the sire of daughters producing 775 registered foals with 135 performers, 19 show ROM, 16 race ROM, nine AQHA Champions, 11 AA, five AAA, earning 982 halter points and 643 working points. The one aspect that Evelyn left out was the fact that when she married Quentin Semotan, she brought some of the Peavy mares with her. These mares are the ones they bred to Star Duster and that ties him into the race to breed that good quarter horse she described above. The foundation of this group of mares was Fleet, who was sired by Bob H. When they bred Fleet to Ding Bob, who was by Brown Dick and out of Mary McCue, they got Mary K. This mare was the dam of a number of good Star Duster foals including Sky Raider. Ding Bob was also the sire of Gold Hen, the dam of the AQHA Honor Roll Halter Horse Barbara Star. This history written by Evelyn Semotan has allowed us to take a chronological look at how the Old Fred/Peter McCue cross came together to form this fabulous bloodline. It also shows how each of these breeders played a key role in the development of the Routt County Quarter Horse. It looks to me like they ran a pretty good race and we all won for their effort. Evelyn Peavy’s References listed at the end of her history
“The Race is On.”
Fleet was a foundation mare for Quentin and Eveyln Semotan. She was raced against Mary McCue and then became a noted broodmare The Photo is Courtesy THe AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum.
Star Duster had thirteen show ROM (Register of Merit), five race point ROM, five AQHA Champions, one AA, one AAA, earning 443 halter points, 210 working points, 30 race points including a stakes winner in class A, two wins from the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Derby. Twelve Duster placed second in the Derby. Barbara Star was an Honor Roll Halter Horse in 1956 with ninety-five halter points. She was owned by Bob Sutherland and later Hank Wiescamp. TIEDOWN ROPING
RAISES $27,000 FOR MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS) Blake Huckabee Premier Champion stepping off... San Antonio, TX, February 8, 2010 – Namgis Quarter Horses and RanchForeman, Ltd. hosted 44 tiedown ropers and raised over $27,000 at the Namgis Premier Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Fundraiser Tiedown Roping. The first-annual event took place January 30, 2010 at the Namgis Quarter Horses Facility in Hondo, Texas. Proceeds benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Center of South Texas (MSCST) and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and will be used for MS research and patient care. “It’s important to always have high expectations when you get involved in new endeavors. I set the bar high when we began planning the Namgis Premier and am still excited by the outcome, “ said Stan Sigman, former CEO of AT&T Mobility and owner of Namgis Quarter Horses. While the event raised money for the charity, it also paid out over $31,000 in cash to the tiedown ropers, as well as awarding a custom-tooled trophy saddle by Cactus Saddlery and a buckle by Hy O Silver. “It’s rare to see this caliber of ropers in South Texas; 26 World Titles and 60 National Finals Rodeo Qualifications were represented by the cowboys who competed at this event,” Sigman said. The roping was made up of two rounds, with the top ten ropers advancing to a short round. Justin Nulisch won the first round with a 8.64. Cade Swor took the second round with a 7.67. Houston Hutto won the finals with the fastest time of the day Page 66

of 7.59 seconds. Blake Huckabee was the average winner with a time of 27.71 seconds on three runs. “Awesome facility, great cattle and added money. I’m not sure what to say other than thanks. There just aren’t many ropings to go to like this anymore, “ said Houston Hutto, PRCA cowboy and Namgis Premier Finals Champion. Sigman wanted to give back to his community in a way that spoke to his roots. He teamed up with the owners of RanchForeman, Ltd., a horse business innovation company, and, based on their expertise and personal experience, decided on a calf roping benefiting multiple sclerosis research.
Stan Sigman, Janet Kaufman: check presentation to MS Center of South Texas
“My good friends, James and Tonni O’Brien, have personal experience with Multiple Sclerosis. When they approached me regarding a charitable event to benefit the MS Center of South Texas, I thought it would be a great opportunity to raise awareness for the MS Center as well as support the great sport of Tiedown, ” Sigman said. The competition extended to the sponsors as well as the calf ropers. A sponsor was drawn for each roper that qualified for the finals round. Each roper represented a sponsor, and the sponsor got to share in the winnings. McCoys was represented by finals winner, Houston Hutto, and Cliff Mulinax of McCoys, accepted the Hy O Silver buckle that matched the finals champion buckle. Dustin Burns of Burns Nursery and Landscape was represented by average winner Blake Huckabee and won a fully-tooled briefcase that matched the average winner’s trophy saddle. “We want to thank these generous businesses for getting involved with a first year event. The Namgis Premier surpassed all of our expectations and there is just no way we could have done it without their support,” said James O’Brien of RanchForeman, Ltd. Sponsors include Namgis Quarter Horses, RanchForeman, McCoys, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Ranch at the Rim, Wood Group, Bisset Ranch Partnership, American Sales & Service, The Koehler Company, Morgan O’Brien Ranch, Burns Nursery and Landscape, Rangel Foundations, Alamo Area Veterinary Clinic, Hondo National Bank, D & D Services, and Texas Ag Finance. MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. In the United States today, there are approximately 400,000 people with multiple sclerosis (MS)—with 200 more people diagnosed every week. Worldwide, MS is thought to affect more than 2.5 million people. While the disease is not contagious or directly inherited, epidemiologists—the scientists who study patterns of disease— have identified factors in the distribution of MS around the world that may eventually help determine what causes the disease. These factors include gender, genetics, age, geography, climate, and ethnic background. For post-event information, please visit www.NamgisQuarterHorses.com/Premier. For more information on how you can contribute to the fight against multiple sclerosis, call Janet Kaufman, Executive Director of MSCST, at 210-6911245, or visit www.NationalMSSociety.org.
