VIEWPOINT

CHAROLAIS

Charolais’ Contribution to Feeding the World in 2050

Increasing populations and decreasing land

Since the original Charolais cattle were imported from France to North America, the breed has been known to produce fast growing cattle with above average muscling. Because of their rapid growth from birth to harvest weight, their feed efficiency (the ability to produce a pound of meat from fewer pounds of grain than other breeds), and their inherent muscling; Charolais and Charolais-influenced cattle will play a significant role globally as governments prepare to feed the world in 2050 and beyond. With increasing populations and decreasing land for cattle production, we will be forced to produce more meat from fewer cattle. We will need the best genetics and the best technologies in production and feeding to meet the needed increases in beef production. At the end of the day, cattle producers will naturally look to those breeds of cattle who are the most efficient at converting grass and other feedstuffs into red meat; those breeds who are known to grow rapidly

With these requirements in mind, I believe the data will support the claim that Charolais and Charolais-influenced cattle will play a major role in feeding the world in 2050. In recent weeks, I appointed a task force of Charolais breeders, cattle feeders and industry representatives to meet and make recommendations to AICA of ways to increase consumer preference for Charolais-influenced beef. I realize there is a need to educate consumers about the advantages of Charolais and Charolais-influenced cattle relative to their ability to produce beef in an environmentally friendly way. Research is needed to document the Charolais breed’s ability to produce sustainable beef in a manner that consistently leaves a smaller carbon footprint than other breeds. When the research is complete and the reports are released, we look forward to sharing the results and making a compelling argument with consumers that Charolais and Charolais-influenced cattle are the best choice for

In recent weeks, I appointed a task force of Charolais breeders, cattle feeders and industry representatives to meet and make recommendations to AICA of ways to increase consumer preference for Charolais-influenced beef. to their ideal harvest weight; and those breeds who produce a high percentage of carcasses that grade Choice or higher with minimal percentages of Yield Grade 4s and 5s. As I wrote in the February Journal, Charolais and Charolais influenced cattle have a significant advantage in the feedyard. First and foremost, these cattle are very efficient at converting feed to gain. This efficiency is partially derived from the Charolais advantage in muscularity and their ability to produce carcasses with large ribeyes per hundred weight. Certain bloodlines of Charolais cattle are also known to produce a high degree of marbling, which is the intramuscular fat found within the muscle that gives meat its desirable flavor. In recent months, I learned that one of the major packers is now offering a premium for market cattle weighing over 1,600 pounds. I believe this is good news for Charolais breeders and those who buy their bulls, as Charolais-influenced cattle tend to be leaner (less fat) at heavier market weights than some breeds. Thus, Charolais-influenced cattle should produce a lower percentage of Yield Grade 4 and 5 carcasses at 1,600 pounds, making them a breed of choice for packers seeking heavier market cattle.

producing sustainable and environmentally friendly beef. As I write about sustainable beef production, I am reminded of several purebred Charolais sales I attended in the last few weeks where ranchers were holding their forty-first, fiftieth, fifty-third and sixty-fifth bull sale. When asked about the meaning of “sustainable”, I think about the ranchers who have been managing their operations for 40-65 years in such a way that their management practices ensure the survivability of the ranch for future generations to be successful and their cowherds to be profitable. As Charolais breeders, you are blessed to raise cattle who excel in numerous attributes and who cross well with a long list of other breeds! As we approach the final weeks of the Spring 2022 bull sale season, I look forward to meeting numerous Charolais enthusiasts like the ones I had the good fortune to meet so far this Spring. I appreciate your support as we work together to promote the attributes of Charolais cattle and the beef they produce. I have no doubt Charolais influenced cattle will play a significant role in feeding the world in 2050, and beyond!

2022 AICA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE — MARILOU WEGNER

What does a recording secretary do? When speaking of Marilou Wegner it might be less time consuming to ask, “What doesn’t a recording secretary do?” Dedicating 35 years of her life to doing, most everything that needed to be done at the American International Charolais Association, Marilou is proudest of the supporting role she played for the membership. Keeping pace with the growing breed association, Marilou, who in 1986 began her career as a part-time data entry employee, soon became the one behind the scenes making it happen at the AICA. As a farm girl from Iowa, she always had respect for association members and could relate to their challenges and struggles. Ensuring members, staff and those who just had a question were taken care of every day, was high priority. And, in her spare time, there was always data entry. Whether it was registrations or coordinating the Charolais Advantage program, it was Marilou who oversaw the process. Verifying registration information and validating bulls were just the tip of the iceberg. Marilou worked with three executive vice presidents - Dr. Joe Garrett, Dr. Bill Able and J. Neil Orth. As the association grew over three-plus decades, so did her responsibilities. When she began, an old mainframe was being used and some certificates were being typed by hand. She was instrumental in establishment of the online registry system. Then, with the input of more and

more data through the creation of Whole Herd Reporting and the industry’s first Terminal Sire Index, not only did the work load increase, but so did registrations…thus even more data! With that came EPDs and DNA. She worked closely with geneticists on the sire summary, which initially was released once a year and now appears every other month. During the last five years of her tenure, she spent a large portion of her time managing the association’s growing genomic program. As a result of her attention to detail in making sure breeder performance information was correct, the National Cattle Evaluation offers solid statistics that provide reliable information. She also worked closely with association members and worldwide associates to ensure everything was in order for the import and export of semen, embryos and animals. Respected and admired in her position, Marilou had the opportunity to travel on behalf of the AICA and was thrilled to represent the membership on numerous occasions at World Charolais Federation conferences and conventions held around the world. But it was her relentless tenacity and impeccable efficiency that helped keep everything moving smoothly as the association experienced changes and grew along with its programs. Some of the biggest changes came in technology and she was proud to be able to assist producers in navigating those changes.

2022 AICA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE — J. NEIL ORTH

A love and passion for the livestock industry has given J. Neil Orth a lifetime of opportunities and experiences only few could imagine. Growing up on the family farm in Illinois, he got his first taste of animal husbandry raising Herefords. A lot of time has passed since those days, and in the decades following, he has not only been instrumental in adding value to the livestock industry, but has touched the lives of many along the way. From his college years at Michigan State University where he was a standout on the livestock judging team, Neil’s stepping stones in life included time spent working at Penn State with the university’s show cattle; touring four grand champion steers from the International Livestock Show in Chicago across the United States and beyond, including a stint at the World Trade Fair in Germany promoting U.S. beef; 21 years with Drover’s; 12 years as executive vice president of the International Brangus Breeders Association, and 20 years with the American International Charolais Association, where as executive vice president, he continued to define his legacy with broad-minded thinking and leadership that has guided breed and industry progress well into the 21st century. With Neil at the helm, the AICA has embraced decisions that have effectively moved the Charolais breed forward. Cash reserves were tripled to $6 million; 26

M A Y 2022

Whole Herd Reporting was adopted; the industry’s first Terminal Sire Index was introduced; the Charolais Edge, a bi-annual tabloid targeting the commercial beef industry was launched, and Enhanced EPDs with genomic data (GE-EPDs) became common along with single step genomic evaluation. Still looking forward, the collection of udder score data for future genomic values has begun. His move to Kansas City also brought him to the American Royal, where he quickly became active with the livestock committee and junior premium auction - ultimately touching the lives of many young people across all spectrums of animal agriculture. Over the past fifty years, things have changed in the cattle industry, and Neil has been there to boost those changes along the way. Foresight, enthusiasm, and being in the right place at the right time, with the right people, have allowed him to be part of this monumental transformation. His keen sense for everything from genetics and marketing to putting the right person in the right place and equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed, has been an empowerment for not only the beef industry, but for many individuals as they’ve made their place in the world.

Lucas Crutcher, Area 6 Director

VIEWPOINT

JUNIOR

Get to Know Your Director! Interviewed by Madison Voet, Secretary

H

i everyone, I am Lucas Crutcher and I am serving as your AIJCA Junior board Area 6 Director. I live in Fair Grove, Missouri on a farm with my parents and sister where we raise purebred Charolais cattle. I am currently a senior at Fair Grove High School and plan on attending Butler Community College to further my education in Agriculture.

A: If I could be any person in the world, I would probably

choose to be The Rock. The reason for this is because The Rock is a great guy and I think that it would be fun to ask random people if they could smell what I was cooking.

Q:. Why did you choose to get involved in the Charolais breed over other Breeds?

Q: What are some of your traits that help you to A: I choose to be involved with the Charolais breed over be a good board member?

A:

Some traits that help me to succeed as a board member are being honest and having integrity, as well as having the ability to talk to people that I don't know very well and holding a conversation.

Q: If you had some advice to give to new junior

members what would it be,and what advice would you give new members to become more involved?

A:

Some advice that I would give to new members is to get as involved with the junior association as possible. Being involved with the Charolais association has brought an immense amount of opportunity to my life and it has grown me into the person that I am today by teaching me things that I might not have otherwise learned.

Q:. What do you think makes the Charolais breed

appealing to commercialcattlemen, and how do you see our breed influencing the cattle industry?

A: I believe the reason that Charolais cattle are appealing

to cattlemen is because they have the ability to produce more pounds of product when sent to slaughter and, therefore, make the producer more money. I also believe that the many programs and opportunities that are provided by the AICA are very beneficial to cattlemen as they try to better their herds.

Q:

What are some of your future goals?

all the rest because of the people that surround it. There have been many people that have helped me along, and it is a big reason why I enjoy going to shows and participating in activities with the association.

Q:.

If you were on a desolate island and could only bring three things, what would they be and why?

A: If I could only bring three things on a desolate island,

Q:.

If you could be any person in the world for a day who would you be and why?

What was your favorite show heifer and why?

A: My favorite show heifer was a heifer named Mable. She

was my favorite because she was my first legit show heifer, and not a bottle calf. I showed her at various shows locally before we sold her and I will never forget the experiences that I had that year. Who is the biggest role model in your life?

A: My biggest role model in my life is my dad. He is a genuine person and has always taught me to be honest and to work hard. He knows how to handle any situation and always seems to have an answer to any of my questions. I look up to him because he has taught me many important things such as how to clip a calf, or even how to drive without running off the road. CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

Q: If you won 20 million in the lottery, what A: If I won 20 million dollars in the lottery, I would probably buy a bigger piece of land to put the operations of Crutcher Cattle Company on. After that, I think that I would donate some money to various charities and use the remainder of my funds to buy a private helicopter to shuttle me to and from school every day.

I would probably bring a tent to sleep in at night, a pack of slim jims, and a boat so that I could leave whenever I ran out of slim jims.

A: In the future, I plan to attend college where I will Q:

pursue a degree in animal science. From there, I want to build my own herd of Charolais cattle and have an influence on the breed. The Charolais Association has brought me so many opportunities, and I want to be able to give back.
