Cow-Horse Confidence
Martin Black’s understanding of the horse’s mind and knowledge of how to achieve confident performance with minimum stress are seldom matched. Likewise, the depth of the stockman’s savvy is such that he can teach a cow—or a herd—to load in a trailer in open country. Black uses what a horse knows about rating herd mates, for example, to teach the horse to rate cattle, just as he recognizes that a horse speaks the language of flight zone and balance point, the two components required to move and direct cattle. Martin Black could be called “the pro’s pro,” the horseman other trainers seek to help resolve a problem or get a young horse off to a good start. Cow-Horse Confidence gives an inside look at Black’s time-honored techniques for working horses and cattle.

Cow-Horse Confidence
Martin Black brings not only his finely tuned horsemanship skills, but also his highly perceptive sense of stockmanship to Cow-Horse Confidence. His understanding of the horse’s mind and knowledge of how to achieve confident performance with minimum stress are seldom matched. Likewise, the depth of the stockman’s savvy is such that he can teach a cow—or a herd—to load in a trailer in open country. His stockmanship takes Black’s horse training and cow work to new levels. He uses what a horse knows about rating herd mates, for example, to teach the horse to rate cattle, just as he recognizes that a horse speaks the language of flight zone and balance point, the two components required to move and direct cattle. Such intuitive understanding of livestock is a natural result of Black’s upbringing. Five generations of his family have ranched in Owyhee County, Idaho, in the ION—Idaho, Oregon and Nevada—region of the Great Basin. Horses and cattle are a way of life there, and vaquero horsemanship is a strong influence, as are rodeo and stock-horse competition. Through the years Black has stayed true to his Western roots. He is a keeper of the horsemanship and stockmanship traditions that have withstood the test of time. Black is a preservationist of sorts, who doesn’t want such skills lost to future generations of horsemen and –women.

Cow-Horse Confidence
To that end, in recent years the Idaho trainer has conducted horsemanship, colt-starting, cattle-working and ranch-roping clinics in Europe, South America and Australia and throughout North America. A successful competitor in rodeo, ranch rodeo, ranch-roping, cow-horse and even camp-drafting events, Black also has worked with leading cutting, reining and racehorse trainers. Martin Black could be called “the pro’s pro,” the horseman other trainers seek to help resolve a problem or get a young horse off to a good start. Cow-Horse Confidence gives an inside look at Black’s time-honored techniques for working horses and cattle.

HR Tiny Tim, a special
'SPN UIF $PWFS
stallion with a special name The cover stallion had to overcome adversity from birth to be where he is today
I
n the classic Christmas story, Scrooge, Tiny Tim was a sweet crippled boy with the classic phrase “God bless us, everyone.” It seemed like the perfect name for our stallion, giving his beginnings. HR Tiny Tim was born in the pasture, as most of our horses are here at 7HR Quarter Horses. When we found him and his dam, his front leg was broken. While it was a heartbreak, it was a clean break and luckily, no broken skin. We called the vet to put him down. He was alert and nursing and trying to follow his dam. We knew he had try. We decided to give him a chance. For six months, he stayed in a stall. After months of casts and wraps, we took everything off and realized his leg was not developing correctly. Things did not look good. It was time to take him to the vets at Texas A&M University. There, the vet put on a special shoe that supported his leg until the tendons and muscles got strong. The rest is history. Tiny Tim has never looked back. He is sound. He is showing. And he is winning. His first foal crop will be in 2011 and will be AQHA Incentive Fund. HR Tiny Tim with owners and trainer
HR Tiny Tim and his full siblings
HR Tiny Tim’s sire, Twist of Fritz
Tiny Tim is in training with AQHA Professional Horseman James Barton of Barton Performance Horses in Stephenville, TX. He qualified for and will be shown at the AQHA 2010 World show in Jr. Tie Down and Jr. Heeling. We would like to thank the following people for all their help and support: D Dr. Cook Patton, James & Emily Barton, James & Tonni O’Brien. About 7HR Quarter Horses 7HR Quarter Horses produces horses suited for events such as calf roping, team roping, reining, and working cow horse. Performance events in which 7HR Quarter Horses compete require athleticism along with a sound & intelligent mind. His involvement with working cattle ranches and his love for the Quarter Horse led Herman Rose to begin raising the animals himself. The South Texan, joined by his wife Gwenda, initially sought the best bloodlines for calf roping and team roping. In an effort to diversify but still focus on the types of horses they love, the Roses have invested resources in top reined cow horse bloodlines and are set to raise some exceptional performance horses in the years to come. To view the horses they are raising, visit www.7HRQuarterHorses.com.

he Quarter Horse gets its name from the ability to run the quarter mile as fast as a horse can run at that distance. The original name for our breed was the Celebrated American Quarter Running Horse of Colonial America. So as we look at the history of this great breed we see that speed is a key ingredient in such activities as racing, roping, pole bending and barrel racing.

racetrack to Hollywood Park in 1984. This was a monumental change in the life of the Vessels family, as The sale of the racetrack allowed the family to concentrate on the stallion farm as a business.
One of the great sources of speed in the modern quarter horse comes from Vessels Stallion Farm in Bonsall, California and the Vessels’ family. The founder of this great breeding establishment was Frank Vessels Sr. Vessels was a successful businessman and one of his favorite pastimes was quarter horse racing. Vessels’ interest in running quarter horses led to his establishing Los Alamitos Race Course as the first Quarter Horse pari-mutuel racetrack in California. But alongside the development of Los Alamitos Race Course was the development of Vessels Stallion Farm. They owned, stood and/or bred such prominent stallions as Clabber, Go Man Go, Triple Chick, Duplicate Copy and Tiny Charger.
Registration photo of Do Good. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum.
When the senior Vessels died, the racetrack and stallion farm came under the direction of his son, Frank Vessels Jr. The junior Vessels continued to develop the famous racetrack and stallion farm. His introduction of night quarter racing and importing the stallion *Beduino were two of his contributions to modern quarter horse racing. *Beduino is the all time leading thoroughbred sire of running quarter horses and recently entered the AQHA Hall of Fame. The night racing at Los Alamitos allowed this quarter track to survive in the competitive thoroughbred racing world in California. Vessels also bred, owned, raced and stood Timeto Thinkrich, the 1973 All American Futurity winner. When Frank Vessels Jr. died, the daily operation was taken over by his wife Millie. The racetrack and stallion farm continued to grow until Millie Vessels decided to sell the Page 18
The second major contribution of Millie Vessels to the program was when she bought the yearling First Down Dash in 1985. First Down Dash went on to become the 1987 AQHA Racing World Champion, 1987 AQHA Racing Champion Three-Year-Old and the 1987 AQHA Racing World Champion Three-Year-Old Colt. When Millie Vessels passed away her son Frank “Scoop” Vessels III took over management of the Vessels Stallion Farm. Scoop had already found his place in the Vessels family tree as the designer of the new Vessels Stallion Farm at Bonsall, California. Scoop would go on to syndicate First Down Dash and of course the rest is history as he is the all time leading sire of racing money winners. His foals have earned in excess of $70,000,000. I had only met Scoop face to face on two occasions and both times we talked pedigrees. I was looking forward to my next face-to-face meeting to talk more about pedigrees but that will not happen. But his passing brought many things back to my mind about the role of the Vessels Stallion Farm and a great breeding mare named Do Good. Do Good is our Mare with More this month. The Do Good story begins back in Texas. Her breeder was Jim Harkey. Who was a cowboy, ranch manager, ranch owner and a racehorse lover. He was profiled in THE AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL in December 1960 in a story “Jim Harkey, He Bred Dodger” by Garford Wilkinson. Wilkinson has a note at the beginning of this story indicating what a great pleasure it was to be able to interview Harkey as many of the other old timers were gone.
Unknown Sire
According to the story, Jim Harkey left home with two thoroughbred mares at the age of fourteen. He worked for a famous Texas rancher named Barry Ketchum and eventually became a ranch manger for Ketchum.
Unknown Dam
The next step for Harkey was his own ranch in Sheffield, Texas. A neighbor of Harkey’s was William “Billy” Anson. Anson is credited with promoting a group of horses in Texas known as the “Steel Dusts.” Anson found that the Steel Dust’s traced to the Celebrated American Quarter Running Horse of Colonial America. It was the work of Billy Anson that started Bob Denhardt on the road to forming the American Quarter Horse Association formalizing the quarter horse as a breed.

The tragic death of Scoop Vessels earlier this year with the crash of his private plane has hit the industry hard, including me. To those of us out here in the world, Scoop Vessels is a legend, a legend that will be dearly missed.

One of the mares that Jim Harkey left home with was Old Bonnie. She was the dam of Little Sister. When Harkey bred Little Sister to Jim Ned, he got a colt that became known as Old Jim P-10. Jim Ned was a son of Harmon Baker by Peter McCue. Jim Ned and Harmon Baker were a Billy Anson stallions. Old Jim P-10 was one of the first stallions registered in the AQHA Stud Book. He received his number as one of the stallions selected as a Stud Book foundation sire. Some sources report that Sam Harkey, Jim Harkey’s brother, bred him. One of the noted performers to carry the blood of Old Jim was Patty Conger, the 1965 NCHA Open World Champion Cutting Horse. She is also an NCHA Hall of Fame member. Her sire Bill Conger, was out of Sylvia Lady, who was sired by Old Jim. The sire of Sylvia Lady was John Lacy, who was sired by Dodger, our next Jim Harkey bred horse. Dodger was bred by Jim Harkey and was sired by Harmon Baker by Peter McCue. Harmon Baker being owned by Billy Anson. His dam was the Harkey bred mare Froggie.

Froggie was another racehorse and broodmare for Jim Harkey. She was sired by Joe Collins, and dam was Dolly by Red Rover. Red Rover and Joe Collins were full brothers. They were sired by Old Billy and out of Paisana. Dodger is best known as the sire of Pretty Boy. Pretty Boy was used on the Waggoner Ranch of Vernon, Texas. He is the broodmare sire of many of the great Poco Bueno foals. They include such noted horses as Poco Pine, Poco Stampede, Poco Lena and Poco Tivio. Jim Harkey was a successful horseman and rancher but just like many of the 1930’s depression era, he fell on hard times. It was about this time that Harkey went from Sheffield to Fort Stockton in Pecos County to ranch. Then the depression hit and he was forced to move to Carlsbad, New Mexico. Wilkinson in his story on Jim Harkey tells us that he took about 52 mares with him to Carlsbad and then drought forced him to turn them loose and he lost many of them. When he left Carlsbad to go to Arkansas he had only 13 mares left. The story tells us that he eventually lost all of his prized horses.
Do Good was a brown mare with a small white star. She was branded on the left jaw with a K and she had a 9 on her left shoulder. She was foaled in 1938. Nye could never find any information on whether she was raced but he felt that she might have been. The sire of Do Good was St Louis. He was sired by a thoroughbred named Eck Davis. Eck Davis was sired by *Kilkerran and out of Miss Ross. The dam of St Louis was Old Flossie. She was sired by Baby and out of Old Dutch. The Garford Wilkinson story (Jim Harkey—He Bred Dodger) tells us that Baby was sired by Alex, a Barry Ketchum horse. The dam of Baby was Dolly by a horse named Clay McGonigal. He is listed as sired by Joe Collins. A mare named Dolly is listed in the Wilkinson story as the dam of Froggie, dam of Dodger. This Dolly was listed as sired by Red Rover, a full brother to Joe Collins. The breeding on Old Dutch was unknown.
It was at Carlsbad that we get to Do Good. This is where Frank Vessels Sr. comes into the picture. Vessels’ became involved in quarter horse racing and by the mid 1940’s he was buying horses. He was the under bidder on Poco Bueno at the Hankins Brothers Sale when Jess Hankins sold Poco Bueno. The two Vessels’ purchases that will mean the most to us are Clabber and Do Good. Clabber was the 1940-41 AQHA World Champion Running Quarter Horse. Frank Smith bred Clabber. He was bought and used by A. A. “Ab” Nichols of Gilbert Arizona as a two year old. Using the term “used by Nichols” comes as an understatement as the Nichols were ranchers that used the horse in roping, heading, cutting and ranch work. They used Clabber on a regular basis and then raced him on the weekend. Thus he was given the nickname of “The Iron Horse.”
Clabber wasn’t much to look at but he was an “Iron Horse’ on the track and in peformance events. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum.
Vessels bought Clabber in 1944 and took him to California to stand at stud on the new Vessels Stallion Farm. He stood on the ranch until his death in 1947 at the age of 11. Vessels told Nelson Nye in his book Champions of the Quarter Track in the chapter on Clabber II that he bought Do Good and her dam from Wirt Bowman. Bowman had bought Do Good and her dam Flossie from Harkey in the fall of 1944. Vessels bought her from Bowman in February of 1945. She was registered in the AQHA in 1945 while owned by Vessels. Page 22
The dam of Do Good was first called Little Flossie, but the AQHA registered her as Flossie. She was a 1931 brown mare bred by Jim Harkey. She was also branded with a K on the left jaw and a 9 on the left shoulder. The sire of Flossie was Duggan by Baby. This makes Do Good double bred to Baby with a breeding pattern of 3 X 3. The dam of Duggan was Old Flossie, the dam of St Louis. This makes Do Good inbred to Old Flossie with a 2 X 3 breeding pattern.

runner going 400 yards at Los Alamitos in :19.98. He went on to set track records at Pomona and Bay Meadows to finish his race career. He went to the halter arena and was named Grand Champion Stallion at shows like the Fort Worth Livestock Show and the American Royal Quarter Horse Show.
The first Three Bars foal out of Chicado V to go to the track was Three Chicks. This stallion was a stakes winner in the 1962 Josie Bar Handicap and the 1963 Go Man Go Handicap. He was an AQHA Champion with 23 halter points and two performance points.
Scooper Chick became an AQHA Champion and Superior halter horse. Boston Mac, Cookie’s Gay Way, Triple Me, Triple’s Image, Triples Rocket and Charge M Triple were all AQHA Champions.
Three Chicks was a leading sire with some outstanding runners and a running champion, AQHA Champions and several Superior halter and performance horses. His running Champion was Chicks Called Sue, 1975 AQHA Running Champion Two-Year-Old Filly and his son Three Oh’s was the 1968 All American Futurity winner. Three Oh’s was not only an All American winner but a top sire of runners. His Champions include Maskeo Lad, 1975 AQHA Running Champion Three-Year-Old Colt and Oh Shiney, 1981 AQHA Running Champion Aged Stallion. The arena performers sired by Three Chicks include Mr Perfection, an AQHA Champion and Superior halter horse. His other Superior halter horses include Gann’s Three Chicks, Phantom Bar, Riva, Skedadle Chick and Tres of Diamonds. His other AQHA Champions were Gann’s Three Chicks, Skedadle Chick, Nuther Dude and Whatuthink. His Superior performance horses were the Superior Western Pleasure horses Native Chick and Nuther Dude. The next foal out of Chicado V was Anchor Chic. This horse was sired by Anchor Watch (TB). He was a race winner. Chicado V went back to the court of Three Bars and produced The Ole Man in 1963. The Ole Man was a stakes winner in the Lightning Bar Memorial and the State Fair Stallion Stakes. The Ole Man sired runners and arena performers just like his brother Three Chicks. The Ole Man counts among his leading performers Ole Sport, stakes winner of $103,696; Anna Three, a Superior halter horse and AQHA Champion; Ole Cutie Bar, Superior hunter under saddle and AQHA Champion and Tee Jay Ole Jackie, Superior halter horse. Tee Jay Ole Jackie was the 1973 AJQHA World Champion Three-Year-Old Gelding and the 1978 AJQHA World Champion Aged Gelding. The Ole Man was the last of four sons of Three Bars and Chicado V. The first son of this combination was Triple Chick, who was unraced and unshown. He was also the first foal out of Chicado V being foaled in 1955. Triple Chick was the sire of several noted runners. His leading money winner was Chickamona, a winner of $111,672. She was second in the 1966 All American Futurity. Scooper Chick by Triple Chick was a world record setting
Triple’s Image was the sire of several AQHA World Champions. These Champions include Triples, 1986 AQHA World Champion Snaffle Bit Western Pleasure and Ima Triples Image, 1986 AQHA World Champion Amateur Western Pleasure. Boston Mac was another good siring son of Triple Chick. This good stallion was an All American Futurity Finalist and then went on to be a legend in the halter arena. He was Superior at halter. He was a noted sire with foals like The Boston Flash, a two time AQHA World Champion Halter Horse; Boston Glamour, 1982 AQHA World Champion Junior Western Pleasure Horse and Carbon C Miss, the 1982 AJQHA World Champion Western Pleasure Horse. The last two foals out of Chicado V were Successor, an ROM runner sired by Go Man Go and Alisal, an unraced mare sired by Double Bid. The next Do Good foal was Ram Bam by War Bam (TB). She was followed by Do Good Bam an ROM racing daughter of War Bam (TB). Do Good Bam was the dam of Good Van. Good Van in turn was the dam of Big Van Man who was a two time AJQHA World Show Top Ten finalist in Jumping. The big runner out of Do Good Bam was Alamitos Bar. This 1959 son of Three Bars was a multiple stakes winner of such races as the PCQHRA California Bred Futurity, the Los Ninas Handicap and the Shue Fly Stakes. Alamitos Bar went on to become a successful sire with several champions to his credit. They include Kaweah Bar, the 1968 and 1970 American Quarter Running World Champion; Band of Angels, 1978 American Quarter Running Champion Two-Year-Old Filly and Alamitos Angel, the 1972 American Quarter Running Champion Three-Year-Old Filly. Do Win by Direct Win (TB) and out of Do Good was her last stakes horse. He was stakes placed in the Pacific Coast QHRA CA-Bred Stakes. Her next foal was Do More Good by Lee Moore. This mare was the dam of one ROM runner in Do Watch. Do Direct Good by Direct Win (TB) and Do Van by Vandy were starters but didn’t get an ROM. The last ROM runner out of this mare was Do Chick by Triple Chick. This makes Do Chick double bred to Do Good through her grandson Triple Chick. A quick note on Flossie, the dam of Do Good. This mare was a producer in her own right. She was the dam of Clabber’s Flossie V. Clabber’s Flossie V was the dam of two champions. They were Clab Win, the 1956 American Racing Quarter Horse Champion Three-Year-Old Filly and Clabber’s Win, the 1957 American Racing Quarter Horse Champion Three-Year-Old Colt. When mated with Billy Anson, Flossie produced Billy’s Flossie V. Billy’s Flossie V produced Flo Twist by Hard Twist.
Flo Twist was an AQHA halter point earner. Flo Twist is the dam of Lady Cutter by Cutter Bill. Lady Cutter was the 1972 NCHA Open Futurity Reserve Champion. Anson Baby is a full sister to Billy’s Flossie V. Anson Baby is the dam of Big Willow, 1977 AQHA World Champion Jumping Horse. The Do Good family is still going strong in the Vesssels Stallion Farm breeding program. This was very evident in the races run at Los Alamitos Racecourse on Friday October 1, 2010. Whole Lot Of Karma won the 2010 PCQHRA Breeder’s Derby G1 at Los Alamitos Race Course. Sheza Bad Habit won the 2010 Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap and her half sister Sheza Fast Habit broke her maiden. All three of these Vessels bred runners are out of the Do Good tail female line and bred by Vessels Stallion Farm. Whole Lot A Karma is out of Its Good To Be Queen, who is out of Fishers Favorite. Sheza Fast Habit and Sheza Bad Habit are out of Sheza Habit, who is out of First Femme, who is out of Fishers Favorite. So all three of these runners trace to Do Good through Fishers Favorite, who is out of Ought To Go, who is out of Do Good Bam, who is out of Do Good.
On hand for the award presentation after Whole Lot Of Karma’s big win was Bonnie and Kash Vessels, the wife and son of the late Scoop Vessels. Bonnie Vessels and her family and staff have committed to continue the Vessels Legacy so it appears that this great breeding program is going to continue supplying the American Quarter Horse with the speed it needs and Do Good will continue do her part as one of our Mares With More.
This appears to be a registration photo for Flossie the dam of Do Good. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum. Page 34

e have been focusing on Band Play in the last few Working Lines. Some of our information came through interviews with Roy Jones of Oakville, Texas. Roy has come through again with some information on Band Time, the Thoroughbred sire of Band Play. So this month I thought we would expand our look at Band Time as he has had a very interesting influence on the American Quarter Horse. Band Time was bred by Dixiana Farm at Lexington, Kentucky. This famous farm was the home of Himyar. Himyar was the sire of Domino and Plaudit, both very influential sires in the Quarter Horse Breed. Dixiana Farm was the breeder of Domino. Barak G. Thomas was the original owner of Dixiana, founding the farm in1878. Since then the farm has changed hands a number of times. The owners over the years included Charles T. Fisher. Fisher A win picture of Band Time that occurred on June 8, 1931. It appears he won easily. was the owner of Fisher Body Company. It was as a sire that High Time excelled, as he became a leading sire. He was the leading sire of money earners in 1928. His stakes horses included Sarazen, Time Exposure and High Strung. High Strung was the Champion Two-Year-Old in 1928. High Time spent the last years of his life as a stallion at Dixiana.

Bandymo was the dam of Band Time. She was sired by Uncle by *Star Shoot by Isinglass. The dam of Uncle was The Niece by Alarm. Alarm was the sire of Himyar. Himyar was the sire of Domino. The Dixiana letter provided information on Bandymo. She was an unraced bay mare that was foaled in 1915, and died in 1937. Bandymo was a half sister to Sporting Blood, Felix, Arc Light and Festival. They were all stakes winners. As a producer Bandymo produced no stakes winners. North Beauty was a daughter of Bandymo making her a half sister to Band Time. North Beauty was the dam of the stakes winner Castle Beau. The Dixiana letter tells us that Band Time was diagnosed with Periodic Ophthalmic and he was going blind. Periodic Ophthalmic is a chronic eye disease whose symptoms are swollen, tender eyelids, watery discharge, a rise in temperature and cloudiness of the fluid in the eye and cornea. The disease leads to complete blindness. Band Time was going blind and thus he was then given to a trainer named Hugh Fontaine. Fontaine turned around and gave him to a friend in Texas.

A second letter that Roy sent is written by Mr. Fontaine and it continues our story. This letter was written on October 31, 1962 to send information to Mrs. Guyn. Fontaine reported that he got the horse from Ross Long and within the week gave him to H. W. Humberson of Stephenville, Texas. Fontaine recalled that Band Time was four-years-old when he got him and that he had never been bred. Fontaine went on to state, “He had tremendous speed but could not stand training. I think he had ankle trouble but I never tried to do anything with him because all I wanted him for was to send him to my partner for breeding for polo ponies. His good conformation and smartness made him suitable for what Humberson wanted and he was a top bred horse—Wish I had one like him now.” Band Time went to Texas in about 1932 or 1933 as a three or four year old and he was used by Humberson to breed polo ponies. The registration application for Band Play tells us that he was bred by Claude Arnett of Lometa, Texas. The application does not give the owner of the sire of Band Play. Who was foaled in 1934. It is at this point that the ownership of Band Time becomes fuzzy. We know that Humberson used him in Texas as a sire. But then Benny Binion comes into the picture and we have nothing to tell us when he bought the horse. Benny Binion was quite a character. He was a rancher, gambler, casino owner and a convicted felon with mob ties. Binion started out ranching in Texas and eventually had

Come To The Source 13th Production Sale Held on August 28 in Laramie, Wyo. "Come to the Source" was started in 1998 by four partners with an idea. We had one thing in common - Blue Valentine - and we knew there were people out there who were looking for the kind of horses we were raising. Our philosophy has always been to provide horses that are structurally sound, smart and easy to work with, while preserving the Blue Valentine bloodlines. We each add our own special touch, and the result is a variety that keeps our customers coming back. We're the "Original Source." A Big Thank You to everyone who attended the sale. Horses were sold to 22 states and 12 went to locations outside the U.S. We were happy with the turnout and enjoyed the company of old friends and new customers. Everyone enjoyed the cool, fresh air, especially those from the south and midwest. You can't beat the weather in Laramie, Wyoming in August. A highlight of the weekend was a visit from AQHA President Johannes Orgeldinger and AQHA Executive Vice President Don Treadway. Their mission was to gather information to help improve the objectives of the AQHA. We were honored to have them there and we hope they enjoyed their visit to Laramie. Results The sale averaged $2,543 for 96 horses. The high selling horse was Lot 19, Blue Fire Hancock. He was a 4-yr-old grullo roan stallion by Blues Roan Hancock out of a Wyo Blue Bonnet daughter. Benny Binion’s Gelding was the 1946-47-48 NCHA Open World Champion Cutting Horse. He was the first horse to achieve the World Championship and he did it three years in a row. He was shown to his titles by George Glasscock. Benny Binion’s Gelding was sired by Band Time. Glasscock told Nelson Nye in his book THE COMPLETE BOOK OF THE QUARTER HORSE in his biography of Benny Binion’s Gelding that “Band Time was the sire of a lot of good horses—cow horses and race horses. He was one of the foundation sires of the Binion string and Benny always said he would have kept him if he hadn’t gone blind.” Benny Binion’s fondness for Band Time is apparent with the mares he kept by of the horse. When Binion registered his horses with the National Quarter Horse Breeders Association he registered 173 head beginning with number 7415 and ending with 7588. Of these 173 horses you will find 42 sired by Band Time. All of these Band Time horses were born between 1935 and 1941. This breaks down into three born in 1935; 13 born in 1937; 2 born in 1938; 22 born in 1939; one born in 1940 and one born in 1941. It has to be noted that none of them are listed as born in 1936. All of the Band Time foals registered by Binion were mares. They were all registered with the name J Quarter Mare and then given a number. Example: J Quarter Mare No. 9. This mare was sired by Band Time and out of a J Quarter Mare, and her dam’s pedigree is unknown. We saw with Benny Binion’s Gelding being named the first NCHA World Champion that Band Time was involved with cutting. This is reinforced by a couple of cutters produced from the J Quarter group of mares, Gandy’s Time and Page 42
Cresson May was the winner of $4,424.06 in the NCHA. She awarded the Certificate of Ability. She earned 85.5 AQHA cutting points with 18 halter points. She was an AQHA Champion with a Superior in cutting.
Cresson May was a maternal half sister to Gandy’s Time. They were out of J Quarter Mare 64 by Band Time. J Quarter Mare 64 was double registered in the NQHBA and the AQHA. Gandy’s Time was sired by Gandy Dancer by Leo. Cresson May was sired by Rockspring by King P-234. Rocksprings was used in the Binion breeding program. The next person to own Band Time was E. A. Whiteside. Whiteside was looking for a thoroughbred stallion for his ranch at Sipe Springs. Whiteside found Band Time and bought him. It is at this point that it can get a little confusing. According to The Quarter Horse magazine article, “The Story of Band Play” that Whiteside bought Band Time in 1938. But Binion continued to have colts sired by Band Time until 1941 although the biggest majority of them were born in 1939. The Whiteside Ranch was rich in the blood of Old Joe Bailey as Whiteside was the last owner of this great old stallion. Old Joe Bailey carried the blood of Shiloh and Steel Dust and even a cross to Old Billy. Old Joe Bailey was the sire of may fine quarter horses but most notably as the sire of the Waggoner Ranch stallion Yellow Wolf. The breeding pattern for Band Time while owned by Whiteside is an interesting one. He was bred to Old Joe Bailey bred mares and several thoroughbred mares. One of the Joe Bailey bred mares was Sis B Bailey. She was sired by Fred Bailey. Fred Bailey was a son of Old Joe Bailey. Old Joe Bailey was sired by Eureka by Shelby. The dam of Old Joe Bailey was Susie McQuirter by Little Ben. The dam of Fred Bailey was Big Dun by Buck. Buck was a son of Old Joe Bailey. Roxie was the dam of Sis Bailey B and she was a daughter of Buck. This makes Sis Bailey B linebred to Old Joe Bailey. Her breeding pattern to Old Joe Bailey was 2 X 4 X 3.

A side note on the role of Royal King in this story as we have seen a lot of his influence on these horses. Earl Albin and Jack Whiteside purchased Royal King and thus they partnered on the horse for a while. Albin eventually bought out Whiteside and became the sole owner of Royal King. And as they say the rest is history.

Maudy Bailey may be best remembered as the dam of Buckskin Joe, a son of Fred Bailey. Buckskin Joe was considered by many in the industry as the best-made quarter horse up to that time. He was at one time considered the ideal quarter horse.
The registration application for Maudy Bailey indicates that her dam, Opal Smith, was sired by Barney Lucas, a son of Traveler. The dam of Barney Lucas was Annie May. The dam of Opal Smith in this pedigree was Celia Gallaher, a thoroughbred mare. Cricket Bailey was foaled in1933. She was a dun mare sired by Fred Bailey. She was the dam of two point earners. They were Royal King Bailey and Chief Wade. Royal King Bailey was an AQHA Champion and ROM show horse. He earned 18 halter and 82 performance points. He was an NCHA money earner of $3,832.51. Chief Wade was sired by Royal King. He was an ROM show horse with 15 performance points. He was also an NCHA money earner. Neither Cricket Bailey nor Maudy Bailey appears on the official AQHA produce record of Opal Smith, the thoroughbred mare. They do appear on a list of foals for Opal Smith, as an unregistered mare on equineline.com. The equineline.com lists two mares by the name of Opal Smith, one a thoroughbred and one a quarter horse. Prior to the formation of the AQHA, it was common to find horses with thoroughbred papers, but still be considered quarter horses in some circles. Peter McCue being the best example of this happening. Peter McCue was originally registered as sired by Duke Of Highland and that made him a thoroughbred. Then he was able to race on recognized thoroughbred racetracks. It was later established that Dan Tucker, a quarter horse, sired him. The quarter horse Opal Smith was the dam of Victory Time and Sport Time. Band Time sired both of these horses and they are both found on the Equineline.com produce list. A horse named Smokey Smith is listed on her quarter horse produce record as an AA rated racehorse. The record shows no sire for Smokey Smith. The produce record of the thoroughbred Opal Smith starts with Sybil T. This mare was sired by Band Time. She was the dam of Band Time T. This horse is an AA rated racehorse with his ROM. Lady Corsair is the next Opal Smith foal on the list and she was sired by Band Time. She was the dam of Gandy Corsair,
Page 48
an AAA rated racehorse. Gandy Corsair was sired by Gandy Dancer. The next Opal Smith foal sired by Band Time was Black Ebony. This mare was the dam of Mac’s Ebony. Mac’s Ebony was the dam of Mac’s Ebony Two and Bobbie Ebony Two. Both of these horses were ROM in the arena. Babe Smith was a quarter horse daughter of Opal Smith. Little Jazz was the sire of Babe Smith. Babe Smith was the dam of Jenifer. Jenifer earned 19 open halter points. Then she became a producer. She produced seven point earners including Lucks Steelbars. Lucks Steelbars earned 1,638 open and youth halter and performance points. She earned Superiors in Youth Halter, Youth Trail, Youth Hunter Under Saddle, Youth Showmanship, Youth Western Horsemanship and Youth Western Pleasure. She earned a Youth AQHA Championship and a Youth Performance Championship to go with AQHA High Point Awards in Youth Western Horsemanship and Youth Trail. She was the 1973 Youth Reserve All Around High Point Horse. Her seventh Superior was in open halter. Lucks Midnight and Lucks Go Girl were a full sister and brother to Lucks Steelbars. They were both AQHA Champions. March Time was a quarter mare sired by J B King. She was the winner of $14,370.95 in NCHA cutting. She was an NCHA Bronze Award winner and an AQHA Superior Cutting Horse with 105 AQHA performance points. Her dam was a thoroughbred mare named Angel Time by Band Time. Her dam was Time Rose by Barney Lucus. Time Rose was out of Beauty Rose by Col Preston the broodmare sire of Opal Smith. This makes Angel Time a 7/8 sister to several of Opal Smith’s foals.
If Band Time had not gotten injured and gone blind, he could have very easily been left to sire thoroughbreds in Kentucky, but as luck would have it, he came to Texas and the opportunity to sire quarter horses. His move has proven that he was a major pedigree influence on some very good runners and performers.

Start with FORAGE FIRST.® For sound digestive tract health, a horse’s diet should be based on forage, his natural feed. Research verifies feeding programs relying too heavily on cereal grains, with limited forage, often result in health and performance problems. Make the healthy choice. Choose FORAGE FIRST.
Equine nutritionists and veterinarians agree that goodquality forage should be the basis of your feeding program. But no forage has all the vitamins, macro-minerals, and traceminerals your horse needs in the correct amounts. GROSTRONG® Minerals products, with 27 vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes, fill in the nutritional gaps and give you peace of mind, for only pennies a day. Be sure to try the unique GROSTRONG QuadBLOCK® with four small blocks for easy stall feeding. Equine HelpLine 800-680-8254

Sale Results for a Dakota Double-Header Hetletved Quarter Horses’ 13th Annual Production Sale and The Missouri River Breaks Performance and Ranch Horse Sale
It’s amazing to think that in less than a week’s time all the sale displays, panels, signs, and paraphernalia have vanished into their storage place, and the last horse to California shipped out! Until Father Time knocks at our door for 2011, it’s time to entertain the calls of our new horse owners as they call and email us with heart-warming news of their new purchases. What a blessing to have had some outstanding foals to offer as well as super ranch horses, performance horses, and outstanding kids’ horses—not to mention great attendance! The heat was on literally and figuratively with another successful sale in the books. The horse industry and God’s intentions really go hand-in-hand. Saturday, August 21st, was “Preview Mania.” We offered folks the opportunity to preview all mares with their sale foals as well as two competitions and live sale preview. Our mission is to have a sale where prospective buyers are able to see their choices preview to eliminate any doubt as well Hetletved Quarter Horses quality as offering our sellers the opportunity to preview their horses more here, at MRB, than anywhere else they Showcase Champion can sell. This year was no exception. We had 25 competitors in the Missouri River Breaks Ranch Horse Competition vying for the hand-crafted Gary Gebhard trophy saddle. The ranch horse competition was won by Houstons Open Bar consigned by Chad and Paje Turner of Turner Performance Horses. This 2005 gelding went on to sell to John French of Lompoc, CA for $8,500.00. John was awarded the Ralph Maynard Trophy Buckle for purchasing the ranch horse champion. Second place in the competition went to Eighteen Gray Peps, consigned by Dead Horse Draw Quarter Horses, LLC, a 2006 gray mare selling to Virgil Comeau of Selfridge, ND for $2500. In addition to the ranch horse competition, we also had our second annual Hetletved Showcase Buckle Competition. This competition is for folks who have purchased our foals and are now riding them. These horses don’t have to be sale horses for the MRB sale. It is just another opportunity for people to see our horses under saddle. First place went to Mr Reed High Drift (Lonsum Drift 045 x High Rolling Style #11) owned by Rodney Ruzsa, of Selby, SD, and shown by Nate Horner, of Dawson, ND. This High Selling Gelding champion was also awarded with a Ralph Maynard Trophy Buckle. Reserve Champion honors went to Zan Gold Red (Zan Gold Jackson x High Rolling Red #25) owned and shown by Pam Daly of Detroit Lakes, MN. The rest of Saturday’s festivities included intermission music between events by the Balyeat Family of Great Falls, MT and additional sale preview.
