CHAROLAIS V I E W P O I N T

WHEN IT COMES TO SALE VIDEOS q u a l i t y

m a t t e r s !

A Dr. Clint Rusk Executive Vice President

17 2023

CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

look best when they are walking or standing on green grass. The dry lots in your existing headquarters corral are handy, but they may not be the best place to take videos of your sale cattle. The background in your videos can add or subtract from the quality of the video. The fence behind the cattle should be secure enough so cattle do not escape from the video pen. I prefer grass, trees or even a small body of water just outside the video pen. Portable panels can be used to build a video pen, but the pen should be large enough for cattle to walk for several seconds before they turn at the end of the pen. Some people would say to build a round pen, while others will advise you to build a long oval. If you build your video pen on grass, don’t forget to mow the grass a few days before taking your videos. 4) Plan for holding pens on either end of your video pen to hold the next animals to be videoed. Ideally, the next animals to be videoed will be penned individually so they do not get manure on each other. 5) Cattle should be clipped or torched several days before videos are taken. You may decide to wash your cattle ahead of video day, if you have the help and equipment to get this done. 6) Plan ahead, check the weather, and try to avoid windy, stormy, rainy days and certainly avoid taking videos on days when it is snowing. I think cattle look their best when they are illuminated by the sun. If your cattle are not used to being around people, it will help to start a month or two ahead of taking videos by having people walk through your sale cattle every day to get them used to people. Cattle that run through the video pen or run the fence like a wild animal will not be perceived positively by potential buyers watching your sale videos. The adage that “Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance” certainly applies to getting high quality cattle videos. If your cattle look the part, your video pen is properly prepared and your videographer knows what their doing, the videos you post will probably draw buyers to your sale and help your cattle sell for top dollars. The final reminder about planning for an enjoyable video day is to line-up plenty of good help. Remember, many hands make light work!

NOVEMBER

WHEN CATTLE ARE PRESENTED THROUGH VIDEOS ON SALE DAY, THIS VIEW OF THE ANIMAL IS THE ONE THAT DETERMINES WHETHER A BUYER WILL BID ON THAT ANIMAL, OR NOT.

s more and more Charolais breeders have gone to presenting their cattle via videos on TV monitors instead of running live animals through a sale ring, the quality of the videos and how the cattle look on those videos has become even more important. First, videos now trump still photos when it comes to attracting buyers to a cattle sale. If the sale catalog arrives before the sale videos are posted, some buyers will scan through the catalog identifying animals by their pedigree, their individual performance and their EPDs. Once they have made their selections from the catalog, buyers wait patiently to see videos of their selections. If the animals selected from the catalog look good on the videos, some buyers will make plans to attend the sale in person or contact someone they trust to “put eyes” on the animals of interest. When cattle are presented through videos on sale day, this view of the animal is the one that determines whether a buyer will bid on that animal, or not. The video also determines whether a buyer will continue bidding until they purchase the animal or whether they bid a time or two and then stop bidding. It seems intuitive, but when animals are sold through video presentation, it is imperative that animals are presented in their best light the day videos are taken. It is important that the animals are in “sale day condition” even if videos are taken several weeks ahead of the actual sale. Cattle should be kept in their natural environment and not dry lotted the night before videos are taken. Here are several things to consider prior to the day videos are taken: 1) Will you hire a video professional who has prior experience taking cattle videos or is there someone on your staff who has this experience? If you decide to hire a videographer, I suggest you look at videos from other sales and find videos you like before deciding who to hire to take your videos. 2) When is the best time to video your sale cattle and how many days ahead of the sale should those videos be posted? 3) Is there a specific place on your farm or ranch that works well for taking videos? In my opinion, cattle

The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA. The AICA Fall Board of Director and Committee Meetings will be held Sunday, November 12 and Monday, November 13 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky. A complete schedule of meetings is on page 20. Transfers cannot be done on-line if the paper has already been issued. The original paper must be returned to AICA. Animals registered on-line can be held in the system for transfer or print later. Many members find it helpful to hold all the newly registered animals in the system. No need to chase papers around. When using a non-Charolais parent, follow the example given on the entry screen. For a non-Charolais female type FNF-XXXX, for a nonCharolais male type FNM-XXXX. You may also use breed codes to indicate the breed of the non-Charolais animal but be sure to use 4 digits (example: FNM-ANAN). We can add the pedigree of your other breed animal but need a copy of the pedigree 1st. The fee to add a pedigree is $20. Be sure to click the “register” box and the “save” button at the bottom of the registration screen if you want the animal registered. The registration number will pop up in the middle of the screen or you’ll get an error message telling you what boxes you have missed.

American-International Charolais Association Welcomes New Beef Marketing Specialists to Drive Demand for Charolais-Influenced Beef The American-International Charolais Association (AICA) is excited to announce the appointment of two talented individuals who have successfully filled the role of Beef Marketing Specialists, in new efforts to connect value for Charolais genetics in the beef industry. These new team members will play a vital role in advancing the demand for Charolais-Influenced beef across the beef supply chain. As a leading organization in the cattle industry, the AICA is dedicated to enhancing the Charolais breed's consumer acceptance and economic value. The hiring of these Beef Marketing Specialists reflects the association's commitment to excellence and its vision to further solidify the market presence of Charolais genetics. The newly appointed specialists, David Bisek, Director of Charolais Beef Marketing and Stacey Rincker, Director of Charolais Beef Promotion, bring extensive backgrounds and qualifications that align perfectly with the AICA's mission. Their core responsibilities include crafting and executing marketing strategies, creating educational materials, nurturing relationships with packers, retailers, restaurants, and industry stakeholders; and actively promoting Charolais-Influenced beef through various channels.

2023

Stacey Rincker, a seasoned professional with a deep-rooted history in the beef industry, brings previous experience working closely with the Illinois Beef Association. Stacey has an impressive track record of successful international beef marketing campaigns and a comprehensive understanding of working with Tyson, one of the four major beef packers in the U.S.

NOVEMBER

20

David Bisek, a highly accomplished marketer, worked for Cargill, another of the four major beef packers in the U.S., for nearly a decade and has consulted with startups in the food and beverage industry. David and Stacey are renowned for their creative marketing strategies and excellent communication skills. Working together, they will be instrumental in developing innovative marketing campaigns to resonate with packers, retailers and consumers. "We are thrilled to welcome David and Stacey to our team," stated Dr. Clint Rusk, Executive Vice President of the AICA. "Their marketing expertise and passion will be invaluable for helping us expand the reach of Charolais genetics, support our breeders, and educate the industry about the exceptional advantages of Charolais-Influenced beef." Both David and Stacey will work closely with the AICA's staff, based in Kansas City, Missouri. Their duties encompass: • Leading the day-to-day strategy for marketing Charolais-Influenced beef while boosting retailer acceptance and consumer demand. • Collaborating with the Executive Vice President to provide detailed monthly progress reports to the AICA Board of Directors and the AICA steering committee for beef marketing. • Effective communication with AICA staff, Board of Directors, breeders, cattle buyers, packers, retailers, and consumers. • Skillful management and preparation for meetings with cattle buyers, packers, retailers, and consumers. The AICA is confident that the addition of these dedicated Beef Marketing Specialists will further enhance the organization's position within the cattle industry and assist Charolais breeders by increasing consumer demand for Charolais-influenced beef.

Mary Jane Bonacker passed away at age 84 passed away in her home on Tuesday, September 26, 2023. She was born on May 20, 1939 in St. Louis, Missouri, to the late Henry and Mary Alice (Wagner) Tripoli. She was the devoted wife of the late Stanley M. Bonacker, married on October 11,

1958. Mary worked as a bank teller for Fenton Bank for many years, until she and Stanley started Windy Hill Farm Supply in the late 1970’s. Her bookkeeping experience was instrumental in the success of Windy Hill Charolais Farms, Windy Hill Farm Supply, and Arrowhead Sale Facility. Being actively involved allowed her to meet and support the community. Some of her favorite organizations to support were 4-H, Miss Charolais USA, and sports teams. She also mentored many young people through employment and beyond. Her love for the Charolais cattle brought her joy and friendships that spread across the country and allowed them to see the world. Her yard, garden, and flowers were priorities in her free time, but a trip to the lake to water ski, swim and fish or a beach vacation would not be turned down. Her greatest joy came from being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her children Jeff (Karen) Bonacker of Cedar Hill, David (Annette) Bonacker of Cedar Hill, Marsha (Joey) Patrickus of Camdenton, Missouri, Grandchildren Ryan (Megan), Kristi, Daniel (Alexis), Dylan, Rachael, Michele (Kyle), and LuAnn (Dillon). Great Grandchildren Barrett, Rhett, Mabel, Reed, and Baby Harrison. She is preceded in death by her loving husband Stanley M. Bonacker.

CHAROLAIS SPOTLIGHT MAKAYLA HOUCK (21), PRESCOTT, IOWA

2023

How long have you been in the Charolais breed and how did you get involved?

NOVEMBER

30

Makayla – I have been involved in the Charolais breed for a long time. I think almost 19 years. I got involved because my stepdad, Craig, and his family raise Charolais cattle. I spent many years ringside, watching my older siblings show their calves until it was my turn.

What other activities do you participate in?

Makayla – Besides the Charolais breed, I am still an active member in my high school’s FFA Chapter, Southwest Valley FFA. Outside of showing livestock, I like to spend my extra time at the lake and with my friends and family. I also enjoy helping on our family farm whether it be working cows or helping with crops.

What is your favorite memory that you have made through Charolais cattle? Makayla – My favorite memory is from this year’s Junior National

in St. Paul, Minnesota where I was named the 2023 Jordan Mack Memorial Herdsman of the Year. This award was the one that I had always dreamed about growing up. There will never be a better feeling then receiving this award in honor of such a great person, like Jordan Mack was. I am honored to be among a list of great people that I have a lot of respect for and look up to. Do not get me wrong, winning in the showring is an amazing feeling, but getting an award like this is a whole other level of feeling very accomplished in the hard work that you’ve done.

What is your cattle operation based on?

Makayla – Our cattle operation is based around commercial bull

sales. However, for us this starts with our cow herd. We stive to retain the best females possible putting emphasis on structure, foot quality, do-ability, and growth. We feel these factors allow us to raise and market the highest quality bulls we can for our customers. Making bulls that are built to last in a variety of environments and be very productive in their respective operations is our goal and to us it starts with genetics.

How do you stay involved in the AIJCA?

Makayla – I stay involved with the AIJCA by participating in team

fitting and showmanship. I have not missed a Junior National since I was able to show!

Who has been your role model in the Charolais breed?

Makayla – My biggest role model has been my stepdad, Craig. Day

in and day out he’s showing what hard work and dedication looks like and I think that is the greatest thing I have learned from him. If it was not for him, I would not have the Charolais herd that I have today. He and my stepsister, Haley, have taught me everything I know today about showing cattle. I spent hours and hours sitting ringside watching Haley show. Along with Craig and Haley, Cody Runft, and Justin Patrick have been great role models for me along the way too. All these people have taught me not only about the breed and the show cattle industry, but more importantly, they have taught me that attitude and work ethic are the most important things that will make you successful.

What are your future goals?

Makayla – I am currently attending PCI Academy in Ames, Iowa, where I am enrolled in the esthetics course. Post-graduation, I am planning to work alongside my mom at her hair salon. I plan on finishing out my junior career by going to Charolais Junior Nationals in Texas and showing at the Iowa State Fair FFA show.

Tannah Cassatt

H

Area 6 Director

THERE ARE CONNECTIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS THAT YOU WILL MAKE THAT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO INNOVATION AND PERSONAL GROWTH.

What is one way that we can continue advocating for the agricultural industry? One of the public’s main viewpoints of the agricultural industry is their county and state fairs, and these events educate them on the purpose of the industry and everything it has to offer. Continuing to support these educational opportunities and programs like 4-H and FFA will positively spread knowledge about the industry and advocate for its purpose and importance. What is the best piece of advice that you have been given? My mother shared with me the Bible verse, 1 Corinthians 10:31, “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God”, which reminds me that I am incredibly blessed to have the opportunities I have, and that I am called by Him to praise Him in everything I do. I often think of this verse when I am in the show ring. What do you want to accomplish with your time on the ALJCA Board? I would like to support juniors as they thrive and develop into leaders and encourage them to engage in events and opportunities offered by the Charolais CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

breed. I also want to use this position to advocate for the Charolais breed and the agricultural industry as a whole. What color crayon would you be? I would be green. It is one of my favorite colors and reminds me of Spring and all the pretty greenery that begins to grow during that time.

31 2023

What are your hobbies? I enjoy reading, playing basketball, practicing violin, and riding horses with my siblings. However, I really love spending time in the barn with my cattle, preparing them for shows. What is one thing you would say to someone interested in joining the Charolais breed? The Charolais breed is full of outstanding individuals, who are extremely welcoming and supportive of each other in and out of the show ring. There are connections and relationships that you will make that will contribute to innovation and personal growth.

NOVEMBER

i! I am from Webb City, Missouri, and my family raises registered Charolais cattle. I am currently a Freshman at the University of Missouri-Columbia majoring in Animal Sciences with a minor in Spanish.

Who inspired you to become a Junior Board member? I met Molly Smith at my first Junior National show, and since then, I have seen her as a friend and role model, who inspired me to become a Junior Board member. Molly is so welcoming, and friendly, never forgetting to say hello when she sees me. I always look forward to seeing her in the show arena. Her kindness and the relationships she shares with Charolais juniors inspires me to search for the passion she always shows in her smile and through her actions. What are your future plans? After graduating, I plan to obtain my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree and work within large animal medicine. I will continue to raise Charolais cattle with my family and remain involved in the breed association.

COMMERCIAL CATTLE AND GENOMICS Genomics have long been on the radar of seedstock producers, but Dr. Troy Rowan from the University of Tennessee emphasized that the technology has many important implications for commercial producers during his talk, “Why Should Commercial Cattlemen Be Interested in Genomics,” at the 2023 BIF Symposium in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Reducing Risk in Bull Buying

the benefit of purchasing bulls with multiple years of progeny information. This increase in confidence in EPDs means that commercial producers can be more confident that the bull they purchase is what its EPDs say. He added, “Regardless of whether genomics increase or decrease an EPD, the GE-EPD is always better than an unenhanced EPD because it is closer to the animal’s true genetic merit.”

Genomics are essential tools for reducing risk when purchasing bulls, and new technologies show promise for informing replacement heifer selection decisions and helping to market feeder calves.
