twin cities horse sales Paints Dominate Top End At Fall Sales Twin Cities Fall Horse Sales brought in buyers and consignors from coast-to-coast, border-to-border, Canada and Mexico; we saw many old and new faces. We want to thank all who attended our fall 2009 sales. Twin Cities Horse Sales fall 2009 market had its highs and lows; broke horses of any discipline are strongly in demand. The market on young, unbroke horses with strong pedigrees, color and conformation prevailed; needless to say, for the plain end it was a little tough to find homes. Pleasure horses, working cow horses, reiners, cutters and just good honest broke horses were the highlights of the fall 2009 Twin Cities Horse Sales. We topped the sale with a beautiful sorrel APHA mare by Coats N Tails. She is a finished show horse and had placed at Paint World, earned a superior in amateur hunter, points in open hunter and points in equitation. She was consigned by HolcombTraining of Ohio. The mare now resides in Wisconsin. Our 2nd high selling horse was a 2002 sorrel APHA gelding by Zippin Rock by Dirty Rocki, a real handsome gelding with show experience in the English and western events. It was consigned by Saffo/Clithero of Missouri and purchased by Rita Ostrom of Illinois. Our 3rd high selling horse was consigned by Brannon/ Heitland of Iowa. He was a 2000 sorrel APHA gelding finished reiner and had cutting training. He was an APHA point earner in youth and amateur reining, ROM in youth reining, shown at open shows - just a good honest broke horse, purchased by the Strain Family of Connecticut. Twin Cities Horse Sales continues to have a strong, solid market on broke horses. The horses that sold well are the kind that you can take out and do something with, whether it be reining, cutting, halter, show, trail riding, performance, or using horses with color, size, pedigree and conformation. They demand top dollar and draw people from near and far. We have consignors and buyers who attend our sales from all over the United States, Canada and Mexico; each area demanding different kinds of horses, which is a key factor in our success. Twin Cities Horse Sales held our 1st Annual Gelding Sale in May. We sold roping, cutting, reining, team sorting, working cow, trail and ranch geldings with a few select using mares. All horses were demonstrated in their specific event prior to the horse sale - it went really well and was a lot fun. We accepted 100 head and they averaged $3,000. Plan to attend our 2nd Annual Gelding Sale on June 5, 2010. If you are planning on consigning your good horses this spring - consign early, the spring sales fill up fast. Twin Cities Horse Sales will have a great lineup, plan to be here! Also this spring you will see that we have added televisions in the auction ring. If you plan on bringing videos, they must be submitted with paperwork prior to the start of the sale. They will not be accepted at the time your horse is being auctioned. This will keep the sale going at a good pace. We can take VHS, but DVDs are preferred. Twin Cities Horse Sales will be having a free drawing for a Dale Chavez custom belt buckle after each sale this spring. Fall 2009 market was strong on broke horses and we would like that to continue into the spring. We are going into the spring sales with renewed energy and high expectations. Thank you for your past, present and future support. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming sales. Farmers & Ranchers Livestock Horse Sale Salina, KS 785-825-0211 There’s always a market for a good one Farmers & Ranchers Livestock. We work hard to provide not only a great venue, but nice stock with an opportunity to strut their stuff. We feel very fortunate to be located in the heart of ranching country, opening our market to many local top using geldings, and cow bred prospects. Four big catalog sales are held each year with the opportunity to show prospective buyers what your horses can do, not just tell them. The May sale is a huge two day event showcasing a ranch horse competition for the sale horses. A saddle is given to the winner, and 100% of the entry fees are jackpotted to the top horses. In 2009 over 65 horses entered the Ranch Horse Competition on the Friday evening before the first day of the sale, making it a real crowd pleaser. 250 head of horses are offered each day starting at noon. The roping, riding, cutting, and barrel previews run from 8 to 11:30 each morning of the sale, and allow the consignors to give buyers a close look at their horses. The fall classic sale is held each September a one day event. It is setup to sell 300 horses with the roping preview held at the F&R arena on Friday evening. The October Colt & Yearling sale started in 1997. Each fall area breeders consign 150 head of fancy colored, cow bred colts and yearlings, all eligible for a 3 year old futurity held right here each September. The futurity is an added incentive to buy our colts and yearlings with a chance to bring them back as three year olds and win a big pile of money. Colts are nominated at each of our 4 catalog sales, and must be purchased through our sale ring to be eligible. Consignors can pay the $10 nomination fee or buyers can pay $25 nomination at our spring, fall, or winter sales, but the fee is paid on all the colts or yearlings at our fall colt & yearling sale by the consignor. Including an entry fee for the colts when they come back for the futurity over $7000 added to the futurities for the next 3 years. The futurity itself will consist of a reining, trail, and cow work pattern, but will not require you to be a roper to be competitive, leaving the door wide open for everyone to compete. The top winners will be allowed to sell their horses the next day in the Fall Classic. In February of 2008, we started a Mid-Winter Classic Catalog sale. The preview is held downtown in the indoor facility on the Friday evening before, and 250 horses are allowed to enter. The first Mid-Winter Classic in 2008 became one of the highest averaging sales we have ever had. With a stallion fetching $14,500, and 3 team roping horses cracking the $9,000 mark, we felt very good about its acceptance. We feel our special sales offer you the most buyer friendly atmosphere of any auction in the country. Highlights include: 72 hour soundness guarantee Unlimited preview facilities for roping, cutting, etc. Video playing on 3 monitors as horses sell Nationwide internet coverage as horse sell Located in the heart of America, nestled in the crossroads of 2 major interstates, 1 ½ hours from a major airport. Friendly, professional staff that tries hard to advertise heavily for YOU! On behalf of Mike Samples, Kyle Elwood, and the entire staff at Farmers & Ranchers we would like to thank everyone, buyers and sellers, for your business. Give us a call. We are more than happy to answer any questions that you might have. We look forward to continuing to serve you with high quality horses in the center of the nation! Page 14 THE WORKING HORSE

of Excellence. 30 Years n 1980 John and Cindy Bowling Iformed Triangle Sales Co., Inc., conducting Quarter and Paint Horse
consignment sales in Missouri, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Oklahoma. John Bowling, who passed away in 1994, had long been one of the nation's leading breeders of Quarter Horses with his "Gray Horse Capital of the World" always at or near the top of the AQHA standings. Ironically, it was a dun, not a gray that John bred who would have the greatest impact on the breed: Hollywood Jac 86, one of the most influential reining horses ever and still among the all time top 10 leading NRHA sires. n 1983 John and Cindy moved Triangle to Shawnee, Oklahoma and began conducting sales exclusively in Oklahoma, first at the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds and then moving the sale site permanently to the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center in Shawnee. Triangle is one of the primary lessees of the Expo Center with the Expo facility expanding over the years to meet the needs of the company. he Expo Center is a modern facility boasting over 168,000 square feet under roof, making it a great place to market horses in all weather conditions. Each section of the facility is heated and the sale arena is also air conditioned in the summer months. Horses consigned are stalled in their own separate box stalls and the facility can comfortably house over 700 head. urrently, Triangle conducts six sales each year at the Expo including the Winter Classic in January; Mid-Winter Classic in February; Spring Consignment Sale in April; Summer Consignment Sale in June; Mid-Summer Consignment Sale in August and the Fall Consignment Sale in October. Buyers and sellers from nearly every state and many foreign countries attend on a regular basis. oday, Triangle Sales continues to successfully operate under the guidance of Cindy Bowling Garner. at the accomplishments of our family, you come to realize that being wellmounted has been a family tradition. From our immediate family which includes Circuit and National Champions, to relatives we have mounted that have gone on to win National and Collegiate titles on horses we have produced. There are a ton of great cowboys around the world, and a title comes down to one basic thing, whoever gets there first wins. s you page through our site, you will see the accomplishments of our family, and maybe more importantly, the accomplishment of horses we have raised and trained. To us, as ranchers as well as competitors, we want a quiet horse that can run. A horse that can cut a cow from the herd as well as turn a barrel. We want a horse that rides easy, runs fast, and is smart enough to know when to do it. We hope you enjoy seeing our horses as much as we enjoy raising them! If you are ever in the country stop by and visit. Every day is spent working with horses and the coffee is always on!

We will be selling a good selection of ranch and arena prospects. A little ranch history...my Dad, Russ Silha, began raising registered Quarter Horses in 1954. His first mare was a gift from my mom, Fran. Little did he know how his love for horses would blossom into a business that would span the entire country. Dad was a "real cowboy." He worked cattle with horses, he checked cattle with horses, he roped out of necessity (and enjoyment - we spent many summers team roping in our arena with our friends and neighbors) and he rode horses because he loved it and they needed the time and hours. While he did it the "old fashioned way," he never broke a horse's spirit and they performed in amazing ways for him." While Dad has been gone nearly 12 years now, his love for horses and people lives on in the rest of the family. My brother, Logan and his wife, Diana, still operate the home ranch along with my mom. We strive to produce horses that have athletic ability, stamina and willing and gentle dispositions in an attractive package. We have a high percentage of foundation bloodlines in our mares and nearly all have reined cow horse competitions, roping training, pleasure, trail and much more. We are pleased that others have found our mares and stallions worthy of use as breeding stock in their operations. There is no better compliment than that to a horse breeder. Our current stallion battery includes LJSR Poco Hook (foundation Roan Bar/Tom Baker and Poco Eagle breeding: PJ's Jessie Bueno, a Dun son of Sweet Sandy Tivio out of a daughter of Collins Jessie: LJSR Emperor, a black son of Hayden Wano, out of a daughter of Mr Bar Pat Star, Mr Shine 403 a bay Grandson of Shining Spark and LJSR Sterling Roan, a foundaiton bred son of Fancy Roan Bark out of a McKeag (Joe Quincy) mare. You are invited to inspect our offering at either location any time. We love the people part of the horse business and
look forward to meeting you! Page 44

Horses have always been a passion of mine. About 40 years worth to be exact. To get a well rounded foundation quarter horse, that not everyone has, has been a challenge. But with Driftwood, King, and Hancock, the foundation of the breed, we've found an all around, quick witted horse with all the desirable qualities todays riders demand. By taking an own son of Wilywood, Grandson of Continental King, and a 20.31% Joe Hancock Grandson of Mr. Roan Hancock, we are able to offer an all around new Foundation Quarter Horse. - Cecil Lake
DIAMOND CROSS RANCHES
Rich in the foundation lines of Driftwood and Joe Hancock, Brad and Barb Cross and Robert and Virginia Smith have a long history in the horse business. Brad has been buying and training young horses from other programs for about 40 years. He started his first colt at the age of 8 and has started over a thousand since. "We have a very strong expectation of the horses we raise. We think there is no excuse for not having great minds athletic ability, heavy bone, and conformation. We are very proud of our stallions but we know that without a very good set of mares, that is not enough". Brad Cross
VILLARREAL QUARTER HORSES Sharon's family has been breeding, training, and riding horses in the Nebraska Panhandle since the early 70's. Sharon has performed in drill team at the "Daddy Of Em All" with a horse she raised/trained. Chuck started riding at about 10 and his great grandfather Feliciano Villarreal was quite a horseman who drove cattle from Texas to Dodge City, Kansas. "We firmly believe that horses have to collectively posses some very important traits like, excellent dispositions, bone, muscle, conformation, speed, athleticism, and cow sense. Come see what we have to offer. You won't be disappointed". Chuck and Sharon Villarreal
VOSS QUARTER HORSES
Roger Voss showed his first horse at the national western stock show in the early 50's. His mare band is a result of nearly 50 years of careful and selective breeding with a program based on conformation, soundness and disposition. These traits have been proven successful by the owners of Voss Quarter Horse bred horses. When looking for a prospect that you can do anything horseback that needs to be done horseback, be sure to consider Voss Quarter Horses. Roger Voss, and Philip Rosfeld Page 48 THE WORKING HORSE

The Original Source for High-Percentage Blue Valentines Horses bred for performance, speed and great conformation.
It’s no small accomplishment by co-producers Randy Dunn, Chip Merritt, Sam Shoultz and Dick Van Pelt. Each year they set out to provide people with a unique opportunity to own horses with Blue Valentine bloodlines. A visit to any of their places will uncover the secret to their success. With broodmares that ‘will knock your socks off’ as one customer puts it, they consistently produce high quality, high-percentage Blue Valentine colts. And not many places can show you three generations of these mares all together.
“People like when we show them the big, open spaces the horses are raised in. And most are amazed that the stallions run together in the off-season. In addition to preserving these bloodlines, we want to provide people with horses that are versatile enough to go directly into someone’s breeding program or into the show ring or the arena. We each have our own little ‘twist’ on how we do this, and that complements the partnership.”
Livin’ the dream...
This blue roan, a product of Dick’s program, sold in the 2003 sale.
Sam sold this horse in the 2003 sale...a heelin’ machine.
Randy sold this young roan stallion in 2009. Bonus: He’s indoor/outdoor!

The 12 Mile Ranch in located in the Southern Black Hills of South Dakota. It has been in existence since 1876 and has always raised cattle and horses which were used for both ranch work and racing. At one time 12 Mile stood government remount stallions and provided cavalry horses for Fort Meade in South Dakota and Fort Robinson in Nebraska. In the 1970’s, we raised and raced Quarter horses with bloodlines of Top Moon, Three Bars, Beduino , Leo, Easy Jet, Go Man Go and Depth Charge. THE WORKING HORSE
Open Box Rafter Ranch is a working cattle and horse ranch in western South Dakota, owned and operated by Jim and Joni Hunt and family. They are 5th generation cattle ranchers and horse breeders on both sides of the family. Jim's grandfather, Albert Lopez, held his first horse sale in 1943 with Casey Tibbs in Ft. Pierre, SD, and his family has been having horse sales ever since. The Hunts' program is concentrated on legendary sire Sugar Bars, because of athletic ability, versatility, intelligence, cow sense, and class. Using outcrosses to Leo, Driftwood, Peter McCue, and Zantanon, the Rafter Ranch stallions include 4 grandsons of Sugar Bars, also grandsons of Orphan Drift, Leo, Flit Bar, Three Bars, and sons of Freckles Playboy, Special Effort, Dr Nick Bar, Sun Frost, and Frenchmans Guy. They are producing horses with cow, conformation, class, color, and speed to excel on the ranch, in rodeo or the performance arena. "Good horses, like good men, have good mothers", and so the basis of Open Box Rafter's program is their broodmares, including 30 granddaughters of Sugar Bars. Also in the broodmare band are daughters of Flit Bar, Orphan Drift, Firewater Flit, Dr Nick Bar, CJ Sugar, Sun Frost, Frenchmans Guy, Easy Jet and granddaughters of Flit Bar, Colonel Freckles, Otoe, Mr San Peppy, Leo, Driftwood Ike, Joak, Gay Bar King, Poco Bueno, Reminic, Sak Em San, and more. Open Box Rafter Ranch's annual production sale is held every September at the Fairgrounds in Rapid City, SD. As Grandpa Albert Lopez used to say, "You're never broke if you have friends and a good horse". Call or come by to see the horses, the coffee pot's always on!

THE WORKING HORSE
The 14th Annual Van Norman and friends Production Sale will feature weanlings, yearlings, started two-year-olds, broke horses, and broodmares from the reputed Van Norman Ranch of Tuscarora, NV, winner of the 2001 AQHA Best Ranch Remuda Award. In addition to the Van Norman horses, several other breeders will be represented: Rhoads Ranch and Deadwood QuarterHorses (Linda and Randy Bunch) of Tuscarora, NV; Porath Quarter Horses of Rockland, ID; Dennis and Mary Journigan and John and Chris Tueller of Lamoille, NV; were all invited to participate from the beginning based upon their breeding programs which were offshoots of the Van Norman program or for their close association or historical ties to the Van Norman family. Cory and Casey Shelman of Burns, OR, and Matt Mori of Paradise Valley,NV, were invited to participate in 2007, 2008, and 2009 and will be joining us again in 2010. A total of 112 horses, representing most of the working cowhorse families, will be offered for auction. Due to the potential restructuring of the Van Norman Ranches, there will be a large offering of horses from that program as they begin the process of reducing the number of horses the ranch runs. This represents a unique opportunity to buy into this historic program. Prospective bidders can view the catalog on the sale website (www.vannormansale.com) beginning in mid-August. Although the sale will not be on tv this year, video of the horses and internet audio broadcast of the sale can be accessed at www. northernlivestockvideo.com. The telephone bid lines will be open as in the past. Those wishing to bid must register prior to placing a bid to make financial arrangements. Check the website for further instructions as to how to do this. At 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 17, the Van Norman Stockhorse Challenge which is a three-event working cowhorse competition in which the contestants execute a reining pattern, work a single cow in the arena, and finally rope and face the animal will kick off the sale weekend. It is open to all horses with special awards to horses purchased in previous Van Norman sales or consigned to the current sale. The preview of all broke horses consigned to the sale will be held at 3:00 p.m. following the Stockhorse Challenge. Participants in the Van Norman Sale follow the vaquero tradition of taking a horse through several levels of training beginning with the snaffle bit at age two culminating in a finished bridle horse at seven or eight. The two, threes, and four year olds will have been ridden in the snaffle bit while the older horses will be either in the hackamore, tworein, or bridle. Older horses will have been used on the ranch in all aspects of ranch work. Weanlings and yearlings will have been broke to lead and load. The philosophy and training methods of renowned horsemen Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt prevail. The third weekend in September generally promises beautiful early fall weather with deep blue skies and Nevada blue mountains to complement the fellowship of lovers of good horses gathered to pick out that special addition to their working ranch remuda, their show string, or to their family’s backyard. We hope to see you in person, but if that isn’t possible, please on the internet at www.northernlivestockvideo.com and over the phone lines. Please feel free to give us a call or send an e-mail. livestock auction, he probably had no idea it would grow to become a sprawling, modernized business that currently employs some 40 people. The livestock business was located in South Mandan until 1956, when it relocated, moving to "The Strip" on Memorial Highway in Eastern Mandan. The pavillion was officially opened 50 years ago. Today, Kist Livestock is one of the largest auction facilities in North Dakota. n 2006, Kist Livestock Auction was awarded "The Granite Award", for being a cornerstone of the Mandan and regional economy since 1942. Every Spring and Fall the Hermanson-Kist Horse Sales, held at Kist Livestock, attract buyers & sellers from all over the United States, Canada and Mexico. These sales always feature a good selection of broke and well-started horses, stallions, Foundation bred foals, and lots of color! Last year the Hermanson-Kist Horse Sale celebrated 27 years of bringing together sellers & buyers. Buyers come because the sale has a reputation for having a large number of horses & colts with good Foundation Bloodlines! Sellers choose HermansonKist because the sales are well established with many buyers in attendance, and because Dave Hermanson has ver 30 years experience selling horses, and superior knowledge that only a lifetime of raising horses can produce! The chances of getting a higher price is better in Mandan!

RICK SCHROEDER QUARTER HORSES
In the 1960s and 1970s we were using horses on a daily basis in our family feed yard. This prompted us to develop a breeding program that would fill our need, and needs of others, for good cow horses. For over 30 years our horse and farming operation has grown; however we still raise good all-around using horses. Horses that are calm, cowy, and have enough body to drag a steer out of the yard. We specialize in horses that you can rope on in the morning, show in pleasure that afternoon, and still win in a halter class that evening! Our Stallion, Double Tuf Chex consistently produces these types of horses. “Chex” has size, bone, muscle and he’s extremely athletic. Crossing Chex, a 2002 World Show Qualifier, with our big-bodied mares has produced numerous point earners, many top performers that have been successful in several events, and a World Show Qualifier. Broodmares are the key to any breeding program. Our mares have size, plenty of muscle and are very pretty. Our breeding program started with many granddaughters of Leo and Three Bars, and their blood still runs deep in our program, along with Zan Parr Bar, Two Eyed Jack, Zippo Pine Bar, Roan Bar, and Tom Baker. We typically raise between 15 and 20 foals each year, selling everything by private treaty. Please accept our invitation to call or stop in anytime. We always enjoy hearing from old friends-and meeting new ones!
