Five Dollars
B
By looking at the life of Panzarita Daugherty in the last installment of “Mares With More,” we told only half the story. Here is the other half of the story and the contribution of the “Five Dollar Strain” of quarter horses.
BY: LARRY THORNTON The sire of the second Five Dollars is an important part of the story and Nye tells how he came to the Norfleet brothers
The foundation of the family that spawned Panzarita Daugherty was the mare that J. Frank Norleet named Five Dollars. The rest of the story on this mare begins with an article Nelson Nye wrote in THE QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL in October 1949. The name of the story was “Panzarita, Granddaughter of the Great Jim Trammell.” You will recall that Panzarita was the dam of Panzarita Daugherty. Panzarita was out of Five Dollars. Five Dollars was the daughter of Old Five Dollars. Nye quotes Bob Norfleet about how Five Dollars came to become a broodmare for his brother J. Frank Norfleet, “A good many years ago a feller came through this country driving a team Humdinger was a major contributor in the Norfleet branch of the Five Dollar Strain of of horses and leading two mares, a quarter horses. young filly following. This man said they were race mares from Newman Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum. and Trammell of Sweetwater. The filly grazed down on the creek and must have got hold of some sleepy grass, as she got in a package deal. The Norfleet brothers and the XIT Ranch very sick. The feller doctored her for two days and then my were looking for stallion prospects. They found them at the brother gave him five dollars for her and we named her Five Trammel Ranch. The package deal was negotiated by Bob Dollars.” Norfleet and the XIT Ranch with the Trammell ranch for five Nye’s quote from Bob Norfleet goes on, “She took a lot of doctoring but finally got well and we bred her to Jim Trammell. She only had one colt, a filly, before we lost her, so we named this youngster Five Dollars, the second. He was the dam of Panzarita.” The second Five Dollars is described in the Nye story as standing about “14.3 hands and weighing 1,150.” She was never raced or shown but was noted for her “exceptionally heavy gaskins and stifles.” Page 14
stallions. The Norfleet’s took one and the XIT took four of the stallions. The Norfleet’s took Jim Trammell and it was reported that he served the Norfleet Ranch for 20 years.
Nye described Jim Trammell this way as “a beautiful rich dark sorrel with three or four little black or dark spots across the hips and a small white strip in his face. He had small alert ears, a very balanced whole-bodied way of going, extreme maneuverability and looked like a racehorse.” This was “all according to those who knew him best.” THE WORKING HORSE • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2010

Cold Deck is sometimes called Martin’s Cold Deck. Barney Owens was brought to Texas from Illinois by the Trammell’s to stand. The Norfleet letter also indicated that the dam of Jim Trammell was a mare they knew as the A. P. Bush mare. She was from Kentucky and was a mare brought to Texas to race against the Trammell horses. The article indicates that she ended up producing racehorses for the Trammell’s.

Barney Owens was sired by Old Cold Deck by Old Billy, the South Texas Quarter Horse. This Old
The Norfleet’s never raced Jim Trammell but he was a using horse on the ranch. The Nye story says that he was a horse that had it all but “didn’t keep it all, he handed it down to his sons and daughters. They were fast and had plenty of sense, making good cow and race horses.” The registration applications of the descendants of Old Five Dollars show no pedigree for this mare. She is sometimes listed as by Barney Owens and out of a mare named New Money. The pedigree of New Money is unknown. Our continued look at the Five Dollar Strain will focus on two of her foals her son Norfleet and another daughter named Houseparty. Norfleet was reported to be foaled in 1924. He was sired by a thoroughbred named *Brettenham. *Brettenham is listed as an Army Remount stallion in Phil Livingston and Ed Roberts book WAR HORSE, a history of the U. S. Army Remount Service. He was an imported stallion. He was sired by The Solicitor and out of Miss Used. She was sired by The Ill-Used. Continued on page 18

The Driggers Ranch was noted for breeding and owning many fine horses over the years. One of the prominent stallions used by the Driggers Ranch was the AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Billy Clegg. Billy Clegg sired horses like the AQHA Champion Billie B Fisher while owned by the Driggers Ranch.
W. L. or William “Bill” Thompson was born in Oklahoma but went to New Mexico in 1936 to start his own ranching operation. This is where he started breeding good quarter horses. He later returned to Oklahoma to resume working on the family ranch. During his career Thompson would become the President of the New Mexico Quarter Horse Association; the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association and the Oklahoma Cutting Horse Association. He was an approved judge and director in the AQHA and that culminated with his being the AQHA President in 1974. He is a member of the AQHA Hall of Fame.
The first Norfleet foal we will look at is Cabra’s Lass and she was bred by W. I Driggers of Santa Rosa, New Mexico. She was foaled in 1938. She was listed as bred by W. I. Driggers and it was reported on her registration application that the owner of both her sire (Norfleet) and her dam was Driggers. But she was registered by W. L. Thompson. Thompson’s address was Cabra Springs Road at Santa Rosa, New Mexico. Many of the horses associated with Thompson have Cabra in their name.
Cabra’s Lass was the dam of Bald Hornet Boy, an AQHA Superior Halter Horse and AQHA Champion and Pino Connie, an AQHA Champion. Both of these horses were sired by Jack Sparks. Continued on page 22
Norfleet was bred by J. Frank Norfleet and he was used by his breeder. But then Norfleet appears to make the rounds through several other breeders including W. I. Driggers of Santa Rosa, New Mexico, William R. Thompson of New Mexico and Oklahoma and Jim Minnick of Crowell, Texas.
The dam of Cabra’s Lass was a mare by a horse named Avery. The registration application of Cabra’s Miss shows that Avery was sired by a Trammell Horse. The dam of Avery was Betty Trammell. The second dam of Cabra’s Lass was a mare by a son of Yellow Wolf.

Sidebar To Story of Five Dollars!
Who was Pumpkin? Back when “The Working Lines” got started one of the first great interviews I had was with Bert Wood, the owner of Joe Reed II. I couldn’t believe that I was talking to this legend by phone and he was telling me his story. He was talking about Joe Reed II and his paternal grandsire Joe Blair (TB) and his love for this bloodline.
Bamboo Harvester and Alan Young known as "Mister Ed The Talking Horse"
Mr. Wood would also tell me about his ties to television’s legendary Mr. Ed. Yes the famous talking horse of the 1950’s. Mr. Wood told me that he bred Mr. Ed and that was really cool. I was talking to the man that bred Mr. Ed. His reason for bringing this up was the great disposition of the Joe Reed II horses and how that fit into the need for good disposition on the set of a television show.
Here is the story that Mr. Wood told me about the horse he called Mr. Ed was bred. The story began with a mare named Anniversary. She was a daughter of Joe Reed II that was born on Mr. and Mrs. Wood’s wedding anniversary. Anniversary was an ROM race mare and then broodmare for Mr. Wood. One of the stallions that Mr. Wood bred to Anniversary was Bart B. S. This famous race stallion was a good cross for Anniversary. But when Anniversary lost the colt she was carrying, Mr. Wood was somewhat disappointed and disgusted and he bred her back to her sire Joe Reed II. The foal produced from that mating was a palomino colt named Double Whammy. Double Whammy was the only Joe Reed II colt registered out of Anniversary. Well on further investigation, I found that the horse that was Mr. Ed on television was a horse named Bamboo Harvester, an American Saddlebred, Arab and grade bred horse. But Mr. Ed (Bamboo Harvester) had a stunt double. His name was Pumpkin. Pumpkin and Mr. Ed were trained by Les Hilton. An Internet research found that Pumpkin was a valuable part of the Mr. Ed team. He is featured with his own page on the Mr. Ed website. He was used as a double only one time on the actual production of the show, but he was also used for public appearances. One of those appearances was the Page 20
Hollywood Christmas Parade one year. He was trained to do all the things that “Mr. Ed” could do. Pumpkin had his own professional career. He was Pumpkin and Eddie Albert the feature "Horse? What Horse?" horse in a "Green Acres" “Green Acres” television series in an episode called “Horse? What Horse?” that ran in November 1966. He also appeared in a series of commercials for Snakpak pudding in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. So who was Pumpkin? The information on the website indicates that he was a registered quarter horse. Our problem is which quarter horse? Well when we take what Mr. Wood tells us and look in the AQHA Stud Book we find that Double Whammy was bred by Wood but owned by Hollywood legend Audie Murphy, the famous WWII hero and movie star. So we have Double Whammy making his way to California and the Hollywood seen. During this time, a young lady named Loretta Kemsley was the neighbor to Les Hilton and she was and is a horse lover. Loretta was a noted young horsewoman that was the stunt double for Calamity in the Gene Autry produced series Buffalo Bill Jr. Calamity was played by Nancy Gilbert and Buffalo Bill Jr was played by Dick Jones. Loretta has written a great deal about her association with Hollywood especially Mr. Ed and Pumpkin and she profiles this history on the website http://lore.moondance.org. Through her love of horses and her knowing Mr. Hilton, she became a willing participant in the training of Pumpkin. A recent conversation with Loretta revealed that Mr. Hilton and Audie Murphy were good friends and thus it becomes quite feasible that Double Whammy became Pumpkin. I feel I learned something from my interview with Mr. Wood. It was the fact that he was a very serious man and he wasn’t going to tell me something he didn’t believe was true. He truly felt that his horse was a part of the Mr Ed television show and I believe on that special day I interviewed the breeder of Pumpkin, the Mr. Ed double.
By the way, Anniversary was sired by Joe Reed II and her dam was Patsy Hug by Bear Hug, the double grandson of our Mare With More topic Five Dollars. It is a small world! Continued on page 22... THE WORKING HORSE • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2010

Humdinger was a son of Norfleet foaled in 1935. He was bred by Curtis Sears of Logan, Texas. Humdinger was registered in 1944 by the legendary breeders J. B. Ferguson and J. F. Hutchins. Ferguson was the breeder of the great Go Man Go. Hutchins was one of the early AQHA Board members and AQHA President in 1942-43. The registration application of Humdinger indicates that his sire Norfleet was owned by Thompson when the mare was serviced. The mare was a daughter of Chickasha Bob. The registration application tells that J. H. Minnick was the owner of the Chickasha Bob mare in 1944 when Humdinger was registered. Humdinger was the sire of ROM in both racing and the arena. He sired the ROM racehorses Baby McCue, Little Hummer, Little Skippy and Raymond D. His ROM arena offspring was Stiles Bell Hop. His producing daughters include Miss Fizz and Dimple McCue. Miss Fizz is the dam of the AQHA Champions General Lee Hill and Showdown Rick. Both of these horses were sired by Showdown. Dimple McCue was the dam of Lovely Lupita. She in turn was the dam of Diamond Charge, an AAAT rated racehorse. Diamond Charge was the sire of Diamond Duro, an AQHA Supreme Champion.
Little M was a daughter of Pat Murphy. She was bred to Tadpole to produce the mare My Tad. This mare was stakes placed in the 1952 Nebraska Derby. My Tad became a successful broodmare for Howard Pitzer, the owner of the legendary Two Eyed Jack. She produced Dot Pat Star when bred to Pat Star Jr, another famous Pitzer stallion. Dot Pat Star was an AQHA Champion and Superior Halter Horse earning 178.5 halter and 17.5 performance points. Dot Pat Star became a top broodmare for Pitzer. She was the dam of show horses like Miss Denver Dot. This mare earned 412 AQHA halter points and an AQHA Championship with 50 performance points. Dot Pat Star was the dam of producers like Two Eyed Dotty. This mare was the dam of Master Baron Bell, AQHA Champion and Superior Halter Horse; Miss Baron Jack, AQHA Superior Halter Horse and Mr Baron Bell, an AQHA Superior Halter Horse. When bred to Two Eyed Jack, My Tad produced two more AQHA Champions. They were My Tad Jack, an AQHA Champion and Two Eyed Brownie, a Youth AQHA Champion. Humdinger and his sire Norfleet would also be owned by J. H. Minnick at Crowell, Texas. Minnick was the first AQHA Inspector. He is a legend as a horse breeder, judge and showman. He is the man that judged the 1941 Fort Worth Stock Show where the King Ranch stallion Wimpy was the Grand Champion earning the number one in the AQHA Stud Book.
Cabra’s Lass was a product of the W. I. Driggers Ranch and a producer for former AQHA President William “Bill” Thompson.
One of the horses bred by J. H. Minnick was Mary Minnick. This 1944 mare shows the appreciation Minnick must have had for Norfleet. She was not only a daughter of Norfleet, but she was out of a daughter of Norfleet. Mary Minnick was the dam of Rebel Rocket. Rebel Rocket was an open AQHA Champion that was ROM in both the arena and on the racetrack. He earned an AA rating on the racetrack. He earned 33 halter and 38 performance points.
The next horse we will talk about takes us back to J. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum. Frank Norfleet. Five Dollars gave Norfleet a mare named Pat Murphy was a son of Humdinger. This stallion became Houseparty. This mare is listed as born in about 1923 and a pretty good broodmare sire. His daughters produced Mary Peter McCue was reported to be her sire. Ann Murphy, AQHA Champion; Bill’s Sunny, AQHA Superior Halter Horse and AQHA Champion. Snip Murphy, AQHA In 1932 J. Frank Norfleet bred Houseparty to her maternal Superior Halter Horse, Moonbeam Snip, AQHA Superior half brother Norfleet. This gave him a horse that became Halter Horse and AQHA Champion and Pappy Dan, AQHA known as Bear Hug. applications submitted for registration. The first registration application was submitted by W. N. Hunsaker of Douglas, Arizona. It was submitted in June 1945. Sid Vail submitted the second application. Now if you stop and think about the name Sid Vail, you will remember his association with the great Three Bars. Vail was the man that bought Three Bars and they both became legends in the AQHA. Vail did the second application in February 1946. The Hunsaker application wasn’t completely filled out and thus it appears that Vail filled in the blanks.
The mating of Three Bars with Bear Hug mares was a natural phenomenon, because Sid Vail had owned both stallions Then there is an AQHA transfer reporting that Vail sold Bear Hug to Hunsaker in 1944. Then the name Hunsaker is crossed out on this transfer and Gill Cattle Company is listed as the new owner of Bear Hug. Then a note on the back of the transfer indicates that Hunsaker sold Bear Hug to Roy Gill of the Gill Cattle Company. The note says that Hunsaker sold the horse to Gill in December of 1935 and this has to actually mean December 1945. I see this as the paper trail getting all things in order to get the horse registered. Thus Bear Hug is a contributor to the “Five Dollar Strain” through both his sire (Norfleet) and dam (Houseparty). His record shows that he had two official starts in recognized races winning one and placing second in the other. His sire record for race and show foals is limited. He sired two racing ROM and one arena ROM. His racing ROM were Flicker W and River Bear. Flicker W was an AA rated runner. The performance ROM was Concho Gill. The true contribution of Bear Hug comes through his foals as producers especially his daughters. The Bear Hug daughters produced 63 ROM runners with six stakes winners earning $240,197. The daughters of Bear Hug produced foals that earned 2,243 AQHA points. This would include 38 performance ROM and six AQHA Champions. The leading money winning racehorse from this group was Bar Tawny. She was a stakes winner in the 1965 Hustling Man Memorial; the 1965 Lightning Bar Memorial Handicap and the 1965 Buttons and Bows Stakes. Her dam was a Gill Cattle Co Mare 71 by Bear Hug. Bar Tawny was sired by Bar Tonto. Gill Cattle Co Mare 79 by Bear Hug was an ROM producer on the racetrack. She was the dam of the ROM runners Bar Tonto Jr, Go Bear Hug and Buck’s Top Buck. Go Bear Hug was a stakes winner in the 1969 Center of The Nation Futurity. The ROM arena performer out of Gill Cattle Co Mare 79 was Truckle Inn. He was ROM in the arena with 17.5 performance points. Devil Venture was a stakes winner of the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association Derby. He was an AQHA Champion with 12 halter points. His dam was Flaxy Hug by Bear Hug and his sire was Joint Venture, a thoroughbred.
Vietta was a daughter of Bear Hug that produced two stakes horses. They were Magic Mack, winner of the 1975 Yakima Meadows Spring Derby and the stakes placed Desietta Barrett in the 1969 Oregon Bred Senior Championship. Bar Vie and Vierto were ROM runners out of Vietta. Flicker W was an ROM running daughter of Bear Hug. She was the dam of several runners and performers. The racing ROM are Flicker’s Bull, Flicka Wagon and Chicaro Bar Hug. Flagon and Flicker De Bar were the ROM arena horses out of Flicker W. Knobby was an AAA rated AQHA Champion out of Gill Cattle Co Mare 36 and she was sired by Bear Hug. Knobby was sired by Glass Truckle, a thoroughbred. He earned his performance ROM as well with seven performance points and 21 halter points. Steps Gill was a sorrel gelding out of Gill Mare 89 by Bear Hug. Steps Gill was the earner of 694 AQHA halter and performance points in the open, amateur and youth divisions. This includes 598 youth points earning a Youth AQHA Performance Championship; Superiors in Youth Showmanship, Youth Western Horsemanship and Youth Western Pleasure. He earned a Superior in Open Western Pleasure. Another AQHA Champion out of a Bear Hug mare was Bonnie Salute. She was also Superior in halter and ROM. She earned 65 halter and 12.5 performance points. She was out of Gill Cattle Mare 62. The mating of Three Bars with Bear Hug mares was a natural phenomenon, because Sid Vail had owned both stallions. War Hug was one of them bred to Three Bars. She was out of She’s Iron, a thoroughbred mare. War Hug was bred by Vail. She was foaled in 1944. Her produce record shows that her foals earned five ROM on the racetrack. All sired by Three Bars. They include War Bar, Honey Bar, Iron Bars, Dart Bar and Miss War Hug. Dart Bar was also ROM in the arena. He equaled a track record at Rillito going 300 yards in 15.8 seconds. War Bar was stakes placed with a second in the Winner Take All at Albuquerque in 1953. Mandy II was another Vail bred daughter of Bear Hug. This mare was the dam of nine performers in the AQHA. They include E P Bar Hug, arena ROM; Sid’s Kid, arena ROM; Miss Taffy Kid, arena ROM; Mr Grayson, arena ROM; Sierra Vaquero, arena ROM. Miss Mandybar was a racing ROM performer out of Mandy II. This mare was stakes placed in the 1963 Dink Parker Stakes. Mr Grayson, Sierra Vaquero and Miss Mandybar were all sired by Dart Bar making these foals all double bred to the “Five Dollar Strain” through Bear Hug as a broodmare sire. Dart Bar was out of War Hug by Bear Hug as we saw above. Rhoda Lee was an unshown and unraced daughter of Mandy II. This mare in turn was the dam of Rhoda Bar by Three Bars. Rhoda Bar was the dam of Rhoda Watch. Rhoda Watch was the dam of Chronometer. Chronometer was the dam of the All American Futurity winner Timeto Thinkrich. Continued on page 30...

Continued from page 26...
The third Bear Hug mare bred by Sid Vail that we will look at is Nugget Hug. This mare above all others shows the versatility of this line of horses. Her son by Three Bars was Hug Bar. He was ROM on the racetrack and in the arena. He was stakes placed in the 1952 Juvenile Invitational Handicap and the 1954 Arizona Downs Championship. He was an AAA rated runner.
working stock horse on the California Circuit.
Nug Bar was the sire of the AQHA Supreme Champion Desto Bar. This mare was an AAA rated runner, ROM show horse, Superior Halter Horse and AQHA Champion. She was the 1969 AQHA High Point Halter Mare in the youth division. She also had a Youth AQHA Championship and a Youth Superior in halter.
Hug Me Chickadee was the dam of such noted cutters as Dry Darlena, $97,953.91 and Lenachick, $70,766.87. Lenachick in turn is the dam of the great Playboys Ruby, $268.441.49. She was the NCHA Non-Pro Derby Reserve Champion and was the NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro Champion. She won the following futurities, the Memphis Open, Memphis Non-Pro, Will Rogers Open and the Augusta Non Pro all in 1991.
In 1961 Nug Bar sired Treasured Isle. She in turn was the dam of Isle Breeze. Isle Breeze was the sire of Slide Me Again. This mare was an AQHA Reserve World Champion in reining and Superior in heading and heeling. She earned 212 AQHA performance points in tie-down roping, heading, heeling, reining, working cow horse and cutting. She is the dam of several good foals and the leader of this produce record is Lenas Wright On, an NRHA Open Futurity Champion and an AQHA World Champion in Senior Working Cow Horse. He is the sire of horses that have won over $1,000,000 including Coeur D Wright Stuff, NRHA Limited Open Futurity Champion and NRHA Open Derby Co-Reserve World Champion and Hes Wright On NRCHA Limited Open Stakes Champion. The next performer out of Nugget Hug was Miss Wonder Bar by Three Bars. This is another Vail bred horse. Miss Wonder Bar was the winner of the 1956 Bright Eyes Handicap. This mare is the tail female descendant of such runners as Six Te, winner of such races as the Golden State Futurity. He won 19 races running to the age of 11. The other racing ROM out of Nugget Hug includes Fire Star, Running Reb and The Walkin Boss. The Walkin Boss was stakes placed with a third in the Magic Empire Winter Futurity and the Magic Empire Spring Futurity in 1967. Nugget Hug went to the court of the legendary roping horse and sire Driftwood three times producing two performers. They were Quick A Lick with one AQHA performance point. The second performer was Wooden Nugget. This stallion was a noted reined cow horse that reportedly won seven firsts in 15 shows in the California Circuit during 1964 and 1965. He was then put in training as a roping horse and with B. J. Pierce in the saddle won such famous shows as Pendleton, Ellensburg and Walla Walla. Phil Livingston and Jim Morris in their book THE DRIFTWOOD LEGACY told of a match roping between Pierce and Dale Smith. Pierce won the match with an average of 11 seconds per calf. The third foal sired by Driftwood and out of Wooden Nugget was Hug Me Tight. This mare has no AQHA show record, but she is the dam of Hug Me Chick. This stallion by Triple Chick was shown in a variety of events. He was an NCHA money earning cutting horse and a noted roping horse. He was inducted in the Stock Horse Hall of Fame as a Page 30
Hug Me Chick is the sire of Hug Me Chiquita. This mare earned $7,798.78 in the NCHA. She was a Superior cutting horse in the AQHA with 61 points. She was bred back to her sire Hug Me Chick to produce Hug Me Chicadee. This mare was an NCHA money winner that earned four AQHA cutting points in one show.
Playboys Ruby is the dam of foals that have won over $1,500,000 including seven foals that have won over $200,000. They include Jack Ruby, Little Janey Lena, Playin CDS and Ruby Tuesday DNA. This powerful family of cutters includes Hydrive Cat, an NCHA Futurity Champion Stallion. He was out of Ruby Tuesday DNA. Hug Me Tight was the dam of Barred Hug, by Barred by Three Bars. Barred Hug was the dam of Barred Girl, SI-95. She is the dam of Bar Dearie, SI-90. Bar Dearie is the dam of Brazen Britches, stakes winner and stakes placed in the La Primera Del Ano Derby G2. Bar Dearie is the dam of Sudden Fame, SI-98. Sudden Fame is the dam of Dash Ta Fame. Dash Ta Fame is the number one money-earning barrel racing sire and the number one stakes-siring son of First Down Dash. Dash Ta Fame was a successful racehorse in his own right. He won such noted races as the Golden State Futurity G1 and the El Primero Del Ano Derby G1. He is the proven sire of such noted racehorses as Gun Battle, a grade one winner of $668,781 and Ongoing Ta Fame, a grade one winner of $644,746. His foals have won $14,962,993. Dash Ta Fame is the all time leading sire of barrel racing money winners. His foals have earned in excess of $4,000,000 in barrel racing. His foals include Fame Fox Kirk with over $197,036 in earnings; BF Schenanigan, with over $130,107 in earnings and Sir Patrick Blurr, with over $124,679. Now I feel I have told the rest of the story on the “Five Dollar Strain” of quarter horses. It is always amazing to see how these families got started and how they can still influence us today. I guess we have seen by starting with Five Dollars we have looked at several Mares with More. Mares like Panzarita, Panzarita Daugherty and Nugget Hug could all be mares with more.

by Larry Thornton Roy has one interesting memento of is great grandfather in the form of a picture that appeared on the cover of the old National Quarter Horse Breeders Association magazine the Quarter Horse. This wonderful old photo shows Roy’s family history of being involved with quarter horses. He explained it this way, “The picture of him that is on the cover of The Quarter Horse magazine shows him and others with the racehorse Karnes City Jim, Karnes City Jim was sired by a horse named Hondo. And it was his brother-in-law that raised Hondo at Oakville. I Conformation shot of Band’s Image, the intensely inbred Band Play stallion. suppose that was why he was Photo Courtesy Roy Jones in the picture.” Karnes City Jim was one of the early successful When we take a look at some of the older horses it “short horses” that had legendary status as a racehorse. He is hard to find someone that has personal experience with was even raced as an aged horse and reportedly lost a race those bloodlines. Someone who was actually a part of the when he was 22 years old. history of the horse you’re trying to learn about. So when Roy’s own history with horses had an early start, “I’ve got Roy Jones of Oakville, Texas called it was an opportunity to some pictures of me riding pretty young. I’ve got a picture of visit with someone who had first hand knowledge of the me on a horse with my brother who was 14 years older than Band Play bloodline. me and I was three or four years old.” Roy’s family history goes back to the mid 1800’s in Texas. He continued, “My brother was roping and I grew up Here is some of his history, “My Great Grandfather, Calvin roping. I never caught a calf off a horse until I was seven Jones, came to Texas in about 1848 with two of his sisters and he started trapping mustangs. All there was to do at that years old. Then he went off to WWII and when he was gone time was to brand cattle and trap mustangs. As I understand I tried breaking some of the colts we had. I got bucked off a few times but never hurt anything.” it they would break them and take them back to places like Louisiana and sell them. They said the poor people back east “He had this one old mare and I don’t know if you have couldn’t afford a horse but if you came to Texas everybody ever heard of a fella named Chief Corral. Well Ike Rude, Chalk could have a horse.” Dyer and Chief Corral were rodeo hands and Chief was a saddle bronc rider. Chief was an Indian. Those three used He continued, “Then the Civil War came along and my to spend the winter with George Clegg and he had about great grandfather went to the war. He never told anybody 500 goats and they would rope goats and break horses in anything so we don’t know much else. We didn’t know until the wintertime. That is where Ike Rude started Ole Baldy the about three years ago that he had 8 more brothers and famous roping horse.” sisters. We don’t know who all we are kin to.” Page 44

“Well George Clegg gave this mare to Chief. Then Chief went to work for the grandfather of Phil Lyne. Well they bought this mare from Chief and then Phil’s daddy roped off her for a while. When he went to West Texas they sold her to my brother for $100. My brother bought a brand new roping saddle for $38.00. A brand new one!” “I guess he roped on this mare for two or three years until the war started. Well my little brother and Poochie Lyne decided we were going to rope goats on her. It took all three of us to get the saddle on her and we went over to this fella’s place that had goats and a roping pen. We never asked anyone but I don’t remember that we ever caught one.” “Well that mare was sired by Gotch. Toots Mansfield had a gray horse he roped on by Gotch. Mansfield won New York Madison Square Garden seven times on this horse.” Roy’s personal experience with the Band Play bloodline is summed up best through an unregistered mare named Old Mama. Here is what Roy had to say, “A guy here named Blue Eyes Holland went out to Sonora to work for Jap Holman breaking horses. Somehow he acquired a mare by Raffles and he brought her back here and sold her to Mr. Lyne. Mr Lyne bred her the first year to a horse named Satchell Britches which was a linebred Spokane horse and she had a pretty good colt. Then the next year he bred her to Band Play. They bred her several more times but she never had another one like the Band Play mare.” “So when they started roping on her they were just riding her with rope hackamore and she would just back her ears and go to the cattle and you couldn’t pull her off of one. She wouldn’t run over one. She just went where they went. She was so easy to train and you could slap her alongside the head and she would go straight back. She wouldn’t shy away. She could go backwards as fast as she could go forward. I couldn’t get one to stop like her. She was just such a perfect horse. You didn’t have to do anything to her she was going to stop. “ THE WORKING HORSE • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2010

The mating of Domino blood back on Band Play was played out by Harl Thomas. Roy explained how this came about, “When Harl Thomas and Byrne James parted ways and Thomas ran out of mares, they started breeding Band Play back to his own daughters.” This lead to a very interesting stallion used by Roy. His name was Band’s Image. Roy described the colt this way, “I got a colt that was sired by a son of Band Play that was out of a Band Play mare and his mother was sired by Band Play and she was out of a Band Play mare. He was really a nice horse but all that inbreeding messed up his feet. But if I outcrossed him the feet were all right. I wish I had kept some mares out of him. That is as up tight as you can get in a pedigree.” Harl Thomas was his breeder.
This win photo shows Band’s Image winning the race by a good margin. Photo Courtesy Roy Jones
“Well this mare Trinket R came along and she carried the blood of Band Play and she was just like that ole Band Play mare. She could stop and get back just like she could and I thought that must run in the family. So I decided that was the kind of horses to have. There wasn’t very many of them that they roped on and Byrne James was selling them colts for some pretty good money back then.” Here is another interesting part of the Band Play/Raffles cross. Band Play was a Domino bred stallion. He was sired by High Time. High Time was sired by Ultimus by Commando. Ultimus was out of Running Stream by Domino. High Time was out of Noonday by Domino. This makes High Time 3 X 3 X 2 to Domino. Raffles was sired by Luke McLuke by Ultimus, a double-bred Domino stallion. This is how Roy summed up the pedigree of Old Mama, “I figured you cross them back on the same bloodline and I figured it just happen to work. Raffles was Domino bred and Band Time was Domino bred. And that old mare never had a colt that could compare to Old Mama.” Page 48
Roy recalled how they got Band’s Image, “Harl Thomas had sent Band Play to Dr. Rich at Austin. He was going to fix his teeth. Thomas left him in Austin. I had some friends up by Austin. Well these friends became interested in Band Play and they went down to Raymondville and got Band’s Image. His name was Tony Quinn. We got the horse from him.”
Band’s Image ran seven official starts with one win, one second and one third. He posted an A rating which is listed as a 75-speed index today. He won at Beaumont on August 14, 1964. The win picture for the Beaumont race shows that Band’s Image raced in the Buckli Cattle Company name. A. R. Buckli was Roy’s father-in-law. Buckli was a long time quarter horse breeder that was a Vice President in the National Quarter Horse Breeders Association. “I bred Band’s Image back to an old Band Play mare and got five crosses. My kids named him ColorI’m Money. He was just a little ole horse but his colts could be 16 hands tall. I kept two mares out of him. I crossed them on a Jet Deck horse and got some pretty good horses.” Roy raced a colt named Bernardino that was sired by ColorI’m Money. This gelding was a race winner in four official starts with a second and a third to go with the win. He had a modest 72-speed index. This is the only official AQHA runner sired by ColorI’m Money. Another Band Play used by Roy was Foul Play. Byrne James bred this son of Band Play. His dam was Baby Snooks, a Babe Grande daughter. Foul Play has no official AQHA show record, but was the sire of some good horses. Roy talked about Foul Play this way, “Foul Play was out of a King Ranch mare by Babe Grande. I had a horse out of him that could really run named Fast Play. She could really run and had a 95-speed index. The Foul Play colts shouldn’t have run at all. But he was a real gentle kind of horse.” Fast Play could not only run but she was stakes placed. She was third in the LSRVQHA Derby. She was the dam of two ROM runners in No Trader, another stakes placed runner with a third in the Sangre Cristo Stakes. He had a speed index of 95. Her other ROM was a full brother to No Trader. His name was Trader’s Trouble and he had a speed index of 81. Both of these runners were sired by Trade Bar.
Play Jr and Mueca Garcia were both bred by the Garcia Brothers. Black Ace is an ROM sire with the runner Bob Ace and his arena ROM include Ace’s Bay and Ace’s Susanna. The daughters of Black Ace have produced 15 ROM on the racetrack. They include two stakes placed and two stakes winners. The stakes horses were Hank Ace, Hank Ace 2 and Trim Bird, all out of Amber Ace. Hank Ace 2 is the winner of the 1971 South Texas Sprint Championship and Trim Bird is the winner of the 1971 Poor Boy Derby and the 1971 Blue Bonnet Derby. The other stakes horse is Jenny Chick and she was third in the 1968 Gulf Coast Stakes and the 1968 Bottons and Bows Stakes.
The other two ROM sired by Foul Play were Band Play Baby and Foul Lad. Foul Play sired several AQHA performance point earners. They include Pipsy’s Play Boy, Reed Play, Doll Play and Skidoo Play. Doll Play was an NCHA money earner. The Foul Play daughters were the producers of four stakes placed runners and one stakes winner. They include the foals Northern Fury, third in the Roth Memorial Derby, Shy Play third in the Cow Capital Turf Club Futurity and the stakes winner Hesa Play Bar with a first in the Thanksgiving Futurity. Foul Play was the sire of Roy’s good runner Fast Play. The Foul Play daughters produced some pretty good arena performers. Photo Courtesy Roy Jones They include the World Champion Skip Consul, an AQHA Open World Champion in Tie-Down Roping and Miss Majesty Bar, an The arena performers out of Black Ace daughters earned AQHA Superior Barrel Racing Horse with 50 points in the 235 AQHA points from 11-point earners. They include Open event. The Bar, an AQHA Superior Halter Horse and Mr Spanish Jim, During our original conversation, I asked Roy about an AQHA Superior Western Pleasure Horse. the stallion Black Ace. His comment back was that he Streak’s Lindo is a 1967 bay mare by Cutter’s Streak and recalled Black Ace as “a good racehorse that competed out of Lindo’s Ace by Black Ace. This mare is AQHA ROM with horses like Monita.” Monita was the 1951 Co-World with 15 open performance points and 4 youth performance Champion Quarter Running Horse with Maddon’s Bright points. She is the dam of Skipa Lindy Streak, 1981 AQHA Eyes. Black Ace was an AA rated racehorse that had 15 official World Champion Two-Year-Old Halter Stallion; AQHA starts with nine wins, three seconds and one third. He was Superior Halter Stallion and 1981 AQHA High Point Halter ROM. Stallion; Streak’s Sister is an AQHA Superior Halter Horse and Black Ace was sired by Band Play Jr who was sired by Band Streaks Lil Doc, is an NCHA Certificate of Ability winner. Play and out of Minnie by Will Sheely’s Dorado by Traveler The blood of Black Ace’s sire and dam bring us back to the and she was out of Will Sheely’s Vencedora by Traveler. The influence of the Garcia Brothers on the sire record of Band dam of Black Ace was Mueca Garcia by Old Tuerto and out of Play. Roy was the first to note the significance of the Garcia Medalla. She was sired by Pancho Villa by Little Joe. Medalla Brothers on the sire record of Band Play. was out of a mare known as the Fred Raymond Mare. Band

Continued from page 52..
Roy brought this band of mares up when he noted that the great quarter running mare Goetta was out of a mare that went back to J & T 6. J & T 6 was a Garcia mare that was reportedly sired by Sam Watkins. Sam Watkins was George Clegg’s replacement for Hickory Bill by Peter McCue.
Bandette the broodmare was one of the great Warren mares that helped put Leo on the map as a sire. But her first foal was sired by Depth Charge. This foal was Band Charge. He had the old AA rating which shows in the records today as a speed index of 85. He was ROM on the track.
Roy told me that George Clegg had described Sam Watkins as a horse with “a lot of conformation and he was heavy muscled” and that he was the “best he raised.” Sam Watkins appears in a lot of quarter horses such as the great broodmares Lady Coolidge and Dixie Beach.
The next foal registered out of Bandette was her first Leo filly named Etta Leo. Etta Leo was AA rated as well. She was ROM on the racetrack. She was the dam of 11 starters with 10 of them earning ROM. She was the dam of two stakes winners that won 14 stakes. Some of her ROM performers were Leamarble, AAA; Jagit, AAA; Ettago, AA, Goetta 2, AAAT; Broetta, SI-91; Etta Place, SI-81; Airman, SI-95 and Heavy Weight, SI-83.
The mare that J & T 6 produced when bred to Band Play was Bandette. This mare came to be owned by Bud Warren, the owner of Leo. The AQHA shows that Bandette had one official start. She was unplaced in that start and they show she would have a 45-speed index as it is shown today.
The stakes winners were Goetta and Ettabo. Goetta came on the scene in 1963 as the winner of the All American Futurity. She won nine other stakes races running from 1963 to 1965. She was the 1964 AQHA Racing American Quarter Horse; the 1964 AQHA Racing Champion Three-Year-Old; the 1964 AQHA Racing Champion Mare; the 1963 AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Filly and the 1965 AQHA Racing Champion Aged Mare. Ettabo was the winner of three stakes races and he place second or third in eight more. He was the 1969 AQHA Racing Champion Aged Stallion. He became the senior sire for the Spencer Childers Quarter Horses. He was the sire of such noted horses as Ettago Chickie. This mare was the 1980 AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. She won races like the Kindergarten Futurity and the Dash For Cash Futurity. The 2004 AQHA Racing World Champion was Be A Bono. This great racing gelding was sired by Bono Jazz, who was out of Pro Bono, who was out of Rare Clover. Rare Clover was sired by Ettabo.
Bernardino was a Band Play bred runner owned by Roy Jones. Photo Courtesy Roy Jones Page 56
The dam of Be A Bono was Be Peaceful. This mare was out of Serenidad by Sir Rambler. Sir Rambler was sired by Ettabo. This makes Be A Bono double bred to Ettabo with a breeding pattern of 4 X 4. The next foal out of Bandette was Bay Leo. This horse had a 65THE WORKING HORSE • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2010

speed index. He also earned two AQHA halter points. Bay Leo was a race ROM sire with Bay O Leo. His daughter Miss Leola Zan was also an ROM producer with Leola Bay String. Sugar Band was the first foal out of Bandette sired by Sugar Bars, one of the other great sires owned by Bud Warren. Sugar Band ran AAAT time and was stakes placed in the Oakland Stakes. He also earned an AQHA halter point. Sugar Band was the sire of Miss Band, a mare owned by Stan and Mary Kay Steyskal. This mare was crossed with Tiger Leo by Leo and produced some pretty good show horses. They include Tammy Tiger with 655 AQHA points including six Superiors two in youth western pleasure; two in youth western horsemanship, showmanship and hunt seat equitation. Jimmy Tiger is a full brother to Tammy Tiger. This gelding has earned 524.5 AQHA points in the open, amateur and youth divisions. This includes Superiors in Amateur trail, open trail, open halter, youth halter and youth western pleasure. The next full sister to these two is Jenny Tiger and she has earned 250 AQHA points. She has Superiors in Amateur hunter under saddle and open western pleasure. Miss Tiger Band is an unshown full sister to these horses. She is the dam of Zip N Win. Zip N Win was Superior in open western pleasure and earned a total of 85.5 AQHA points in the open, amateur and youth duty. Zippos Mr Good Band is a ¾ brother to Zip N Win and he earned 187 AQHA points with a Superior in open western pleasure. THE WORKING HORSE • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2010
The fourth stallion bred to Bandette was Leo’s son Croton Oil. This mating produced the AQHA Champion Oil Play. He earned his ROM with 15.5 performance points and he earned 27 halter points.
Band Play proved to be a big part in the horseman’s life of Roy Jones. The story of Roy and his association with Band Play and his offspring is typical of how this great stallion made a contribution to the modern quarter horse. A contribution that helped make the great stallion Domino a great bloodline in the modern quarter horse. A bloodline that fit well with the South Texas Old Billy and Peter McCue bloodlines. Oh! By the way, Roy’s grandson is following in the family tradition and is a firm believer in the blood of Band Play.

THE WORKING HORSE • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2010
We wait at the line— my horse is plum’ hyped. I sweat thru’ my new shirt, snap pockets—gold striped.
BARREL RACER
by Tamara Hillman
Now they’re all on their feet as my hat goes a flyin’— heart beatin’ so fast, I think that I’m dyin’.
The next, an’ the next try to keep up the pace, but time counts against ‘em— one takes just third place.
We fly thru’ the rope gate when I hear buzzer sound— gotta charge to that first barrel an’ make a clean round.
Back thru’ the gate my horse stops with a slide as I pull back the reins from one hell of a ride.
But I took the ribbon an’ prize money too— I got plum’ excited but between me ‘n you‌
My horse leans in close an’ her hooves kick up dirt as we do figure eights, an’ I whip with my quirt.
The gals are a slappin’ my back as it ends— shoutin’ ‘n claimin’ they’re all my best friends.
Tonight, at the bar, as we all sip our beer— all that’s important is competin’ next year.
The wind feels like sixty as it slaps at my face— wanna win that prize money placin’ first in this race.
The next girl speeds out an’ she makes a good show— her pony’s fast runnin’ but down a barrel goes.
Tamara Hillman has written many articles for COUNTRY, REMINISCE, and N.W. RETIREMENT magazines, and often recites her poetry on country radio stations.
The hootin’ an’ hollerin is all meant for me as I circle the last barrel— the crowd shouts with glee.
Second was cinched by the first rider out— the one just before me knew what racin’s about.
