We picked Howitzer as the top selling lot on Cedarlea’s 2021 Bull Sale. His Gold Star Dam of Distinction also raised Cedarlea Epic 14E, a top seller to Wilgenbusch Charolais. As a calf, Howitzer indexed 108, 114, 128, 109 & 116 for weaning weight, yearling weight, ADG, ribeye area & marbling, respectively, including ranking #1 for YW, #3 for ADG & #12 for %IMF against a contemporary group of 68+. Howitzer’s first group of sons led off our 2023 Bull Sale and caught the eye of purebred & commercial cattlemen alike with their combination of elite performance, length & eye appeal.

VITAFERM CHARFOCUS Promotes Leadership Development

In its second year of existence, the VitaFerm CharFocus Youth Conference was held recently in Oklahoma. Thirty AIJCA members from across the U.S. gathered on the campus of Oklahoma State University. During the first session held at Totusek Arena, Leadership Development was in full swing as Mr. Rhett Laubach introduced himself to the group and talked about the importance of developing good leadership skills. After a combination of ice breaker exercises, Mr. Laubach increased the intensity as he challenged the youth to stretch themselves and improve their leadership ability.

On day 2, the group traveled by bus to Oklahoma City to visit the State Capitol. Upon arrival, we were met by Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture, Ms. Blayne Arthur and Deputy Commissioner, Ms. JanLee Rowlett. After a tour of the Capitol, our group convened in a Senate room for group meetings with industry leaders including Ms. Kylee Deniz, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Pork Council, Mr. Michael Kelsey, Executive Vice President of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association, Steve Thompson, Vice President of Public Policy for the Oklahoma Farm Bureau, and Joe Barbour from the Oklahoma Livestock Marketing Association.

After lunch, VitaFerm CharFocus arrived at Express Ranches where Mr. Mark Squires provided a tour of the Express Ranches cattle operation and Sale Facility. Mr. Rhett Laubach met the CharFocus group in the Express Sale Facility and picked-up where he left off the evening before with extensive leadership development. After two-hours of small group training, the leadership session culminated with an exercise that tested each person’s individual decision-making skills and leadership ability.

Wednesday morning started at the OSU Purebred Beef Center with an informative discussion led by Dr. Parker Henley, Assistant Professor and Livestock Judging Team Coach at Oklahoma State University (OSU). After an

opening presentation about Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs), CharFocus students were given three real-world scenarios and asked to rank four Angus bulls for use on commercial Char-Influenced cows.

Next stop was at the OSU Meat Lab located in the Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center. Dr. Morgan Pfeiffer, Assistant Professor and Meat Scientist, welcomed the group and led them through several taste panel exercises where delegates were asked to rank a variety of meat samples, including meat substitutes called “plant-based meat”.

CharFocus participants then met with Dr. Angel Riggs, Associate Professor of Agricultural Communications and Dr. Dwayne Cartmell, Professor of Agricultural Communications, who visited with CharFocus students about a plan of study they might follow if they pursued a degree in Agricultural Communication at OSU. Undergraduate Ag. Communication students encouraged CharFocus participants to get involved in student organizations to further develop leadership skills while attending a Land Grant School.

The final stop on a busy day was a visit to the beautiful Fox Hollow Farms located near Hulbert, OK. Stephen Mellot and his wife, Michal live on the farm and oversee the day-to-day operation. Randy White is the Ranch Manager and along with his wife, Dinah they do an excellent job breeding and raising functional Charolais cattle with performance. In addition to viewing an outstanding set of bred heifers, CharFocus participants enjoyed a delicious home-cooked meal at Fox Hollow Farms.

On the final morning of the VitaFerm CharFocus Youth Conference, the AIJCA Junior Board led the group in a time of reflection. President, Weston Schrader challenged participants to think about their own leadership skills and how those skills had been improved because of the information

AICA NEW MEMBERS

American-International CHAROLAIS Association

The AICA is the official registry for Charolais and Charbray cattle in the United States. Charolais cattle were first brought to the U.S. in 1936. In 1957, the American Charolais Breeders Association and the International Charolais Breeders Association merged forming the present AICA.

Membership in the AICA is obtainable when the applicant has ownership in at least one animal, and has paid the initial membership fee of $125. AICA annual dues are $100.

ONLINE TIPS

Transfers cannot be done on-line if the paper has already been issued. The original paper must be returned to AICA. Animals registered on-line can be held in the system for transfer or print later. Many members find it helpful to hold all the newly registered animals in the system. No need to chase papers around.

When using a non-Charolais parent, follow the example given on the entry screen. For a non-Charolais female type FNF-XXXX, for a non-Charolais male type FNM-XXXX. You may also use breed codes to indicate the breed of the non-Charolais animal but be sure to use 4 digits (example: FNM-ANAN). We can add the pedigree of your other breed animal but need a copy of the pedigree 1st. The fee to add a pedigree is $20.

Be sure to click the “register” box and the “save” button at the bottom of the registration screen if you want the animal registered. The registration number will pop up in the middle of the screen or you’ll get an error message telling you what boxes you have missed.

Fall AICA Board of Directors Meeting, November 12-13

First, we are offering any clients that would like to be billed electronically that opportunity. The postal service has not shown to be very reliable as of late and this will ensure that your invoices and statements are received in a timely manner.

The next step will be to add the ability to pay your CPI invoices online via a debit or credit card, or through your bank account. The security of your information is of the utmost importance to us, and rest assured, our system will be as secure as possible. We are looking at the late third quarter for rollout of this convenient service.

If you would like to take advantage of the electronic billing feature, please contact our Controller, Chris Kendall.

GET TO KNOW YOUR DIRECTOR

Maddy Rohr, Area 1

What do you want to accomplish with your time on the AIJCA Board?

My main priorities on the board include increasing Area 1 involvement and participation at AIJCA events and shows, increasing communication with Charolais breeders in the western U.S. and using my strengths to improve contest organization and execution at junior nationals.

What color crayon would you be and why?

President Weston Schrader Wells, KS (785) 488-6390 weston.schrader@gmail.com

Vice President Shade Bunker Sparta, WI (608) 855-0270 shadebunker1@gmail.com

Secretary Ethan Shoemake Warner, OK (918) 424-8703 ethan.shoemake2004@gmail.com

Hello! I am from Elbert, Colorado where my family raises registered Angus and Charolais. I am a senior at Kansas State University majoring in agricultural communications and journalism with a minor in animal science.

What are your hobbies/activities?

I barrel race for the K-State rodeo team through the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, which takes up a lot of my time. I serve as president of the K-State Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow club, team director for K-State Delight Ministries and on the K-State Agricultural Communications Department Advancement team. I also enjoy being an editor for the K-State Agriculturalist and K-State Animal Sciences and Industry Family and Friends publications. This all keeps me pretty busy, but outside of school-related activities, I love doing anything with my dog, Remy.

If I could be any color crayon I would be navy blue because it represents reliability and responsibility. It is not a bright color that stands out, but more of a “behindthe-scenes” color associated with focus, integrity and directness.

What are your future plans?

After graduating in May I plan to pursue a career with a livestock or equine breed association or related organization within the industry in a communications and event planning role.

What is one thing you would say to someone interested in joining the Charolais breed?

The people and relationships I have formed within the Charolais breed have been so impactful in my life and something I am so thankful to the breed for. I have met some of my closest friends through Charolais and have had amazing experiences to grow personally and professionally.

Who inspired you to become a Junior Board Member?

Madison Andrade and my brother, Maguire. I met Madison at my first Charolais Junior Nationals and she helped me get more involved and out of my comfort zone. Maguire served as the Area 1 Director before me and encouraged me to run after his term completed.

What is the best piece of advice that you have been given?

Sometimes you just need to get out of your head and step out in faith

What is one way that we can continue advocating for the agricultural industry?

I think it is important to tell farmers and ranchers stories and show consumers how relatable and trustworthy they are through various forms of visual, verbal and written communication.

CHAROLAIS SPOTLIGHT

How long have you been in the Charolais breed and how did you get involved?

Emma – I was born into the Charolais breed, in fact I attended my first Charolais Sale at 1 week old. I attended my first Charolais Junior National at the age of 6 and have not missed one yet.

What other activities do you participate in?

Emma– I am involved with the Greene County and Missouri Cattlemen’s Associations as well as the Missouri and American Red Angus Associations.

What is your favorite memory that you have made through Charolais cattle?

Emma– My favorite memory revolves around me serving as Miss Charolais USA this year. I was honored to be able to hand my little sister, Jessi Hankins her first Charolais buckle at the 2023 Charolais Junior National in St. Paul Minnesota.

What is your cattle operation based on?

Emma– Our Charolais operation is based on a strong foundation of functional animals that are pretty enough for the show ring and develop into productive animals in the fields.

How do you stay involved in the AIJCA?

Emma– I am involved in both the Missouri and American International Junior Charolais Associations. I recently retired from President of the MJCA and am concluding my year serving as Miss Charolais USA.

Who has been your role model in the Charolais breed?

Emma– My role model has always been my “second dad” and mentor, Matt Crutcher. He has known me since I was born and always had my back, supporting and encouraging me regardless of whether that revolved around showing cattle, school, or FFA. He is always there with the right answer, the first to step in and volunteer, and always has the best sarcastic comments.

What are your future goals?

Emma– I am currently attending OTC in Springfield, Missouri and am on track to graduate with my Associates of Applied Science in Business and Marketing in May 2024. Following this I plan to attend school to achieve my Real Estate Appraisal license.

STORING HAY FOR WINTER

MinimizingMoistureandSpoilage

Ranchers need to plan ahead regarding winter forage supplies, and this includes finding ways to store hay to help preserve quality and reduce moisture damage. Many folks put up hay in big round bales, but finding the best way to store them for winter feeding is often challenging.

Warren Rusche (South Dakota State University Extension Beef Feedlot Management Associate) says the ideal way to store hay is under cover in a shed, but this works best for square bales and is not practical for most cattle producers, especially for round bales that take up more space.

“Unless hay is expensive or high quality and valuable to protect from weather damage, it may be hard to justify expense of a hay shed,” he says. “If we’re not going to put hay under roof, we need to find a well-drained site, so we won’t have spoilage on the bottom of the bales. If you can put gravel or some kind of base under

the hay that will drain, it keeps the bottoms from soaking up water.”

In snow country, you need to store hay away from low areas that will be wet with snow melt, and away from trees. “If it’s away from trees this allows more air movement to keep things dry, and avoids catching more snow. If it catches very much snow, not only do we have to dig the hay out to feed it, but when all that snow melts it puts all that moisture right next to our hay pile or rows,” Rusche says.

If hay is close to a stream and trees, there is more moisture in the air—more humidity than in an open area. The ground might also be a little

more saturated. If trees are very tall they also create shade for part of the day and the snow doesn’t melt off as quickly in the spring.

“My preference, if I have room, is to store round bales in long single-bale rows with the flat sides touching each other and round side up—and run those rows run north to south so the hay gets sun exposure on both sides. It’s also good to have fairly wide gaps between the rows if you have several rows, for more air movement,” he says. Then if you have a major snowstorm and a lot of snow, it can slide off the bales between the rows with enough room that it won’t pile up so deeply

SEPTEMBER 2023 46 C H A R O L A I S J O U R N A L

between them and stay against the sides of the bales so long.

“When there’s a lot of snow, and bales are in a single row, we can pull the bales off that row and only open up a smaller area—as opposed to trying to get at bale stacks. Sometimes the limited space for our hay yard does not allow us to do that, however, and we have to stack them,” says Rusche.

“In that situation we might want to figure out how long we’ll store it, and which hay we will be using up first. If we put up hay mid to late summer but start feeding some in early winter, we can maybe cut corners. If we have hay that will be fed to weaned calves in the fall—and fed up by the first of the year—maybe we can cut corners on storage, because shrink on that hay (only stored a few months) will be modest,” he says.

“When talking about shrink, some people look at a bale and think there is only a little on the outside. But we need to consider how much that outside 6 inches actually is— depending on how big a bale it is. It might be a sizable portion.” It may not look like much, but in terms of pounds it can be a lot.

“Prioritize the storage plan. The longer we need to keep hay, the more protected it should be so it won’t weather so much. If people are building covered storage, they could put the high-quality feed under roof. If its high-value alfalfa that will be fed for calving and needs to hold quality until spring, it should be the hay that goes under a roof,” he explains. Rained-on grass hay that’s not worth as much can be stored outside.

It’s also important to know how much precipitation you’re dealing with. In an arid climate the risk is lower.

“This is something to consider when figuring whether a hay shed pencils out. It will be different in Missouri or Tennessee that in the Dakotas,” says Rusche. Even in an arid climate, sometimes there are brief heavy rain events that soak deeply into the bales, however, or an unusual year where there is a lot more snow.

“To minimize shrink during storage, look at how the hay is harvested. The more densely packed the bales, the less likely they’ll have a lot of water infiltration; it won’t go in as far. Some people feel net wrap might shed a little water, but I’m not sure it makes much difference,” he says. If the feed is harvested a little too wet, even the best storage methods won’t help; that hay will still have some spoilage.

Some people tarp hay rather than invest in a hay shed. Hay can be tarped at any location, and it may be easier to invest in a few tarps or rolls of black plastic that can be reused for several years. Black plastic lasts longer than most tarps, is cheaper than a good tarp, and can be cut to fit the stacks. Black plastic also has an advantage of being slicker—and warmer from absorbing sunshine—and snow sheds off better in winter.

When tarping hay, it’s easy to do with long single rows or rows of single bales placed on top of single bales—compared with tarping a pyramid stack. When taking tarps or black plastic off in winter for feeding, the covering comes off single rows easily, whereas the pyramid stack or any rows placed tightly together will have dips and valleys where water or snow melt collects and creates heavy chunks of ice. These make it difficult to take the covering off in the winter when feeding.

“The piles and pyramid stacks have more problems in general, just because there are more places for water to collect and sink into the hay. If we place

bales flat side to flat side in long rows of single bales, we have the advantage of letting the water shed off,” says Rusche.

When space is limited, people usually stack bales—either in rows with a sideways bale on top of each upright bale, or making a pyramid stack. “Kansas State University looked at putting a bale on end and other bale on top of it. The shrink loss on these was similar to what they saw in single rows. A study in South Dakota looked at storage losses of bales in pyramid stacks (a base of three with a layer of two on those and a third bale on top) and found 10% loss in one year. A single bale with air around it had storage loss of 4% and when placed end to end in long rows the loss was under 1% so in this particular study that was the best method,” says Rusche.

“That study didn’t give any other details so we don’t know how wet a year it was, but there are more places in those pyramid stacks for water and snow to collect and sink in. If a person makes that kind of stack, you’d want to use those bales up first,” he says.

“That publication also stated that if you tarp the pyramid stack, you can get by with a smaller tarp.” But it’s hard to a tarp over a pyramid stack; there will be some sags in it where water collects to make ice chunks. The most problem-free way to store round bales, if a person has room to do it, is in one long single row.

“That’s the way I store my hay. I had a good really good buy on some

SEPTEMBER 2023 47 C H A R O L A I S J O U R N A L
Long single bale rows
round bale spoilage in pyramid stack

hay three years ago and bought a whole truck load. Then I changed my program--to graze more and use less hay. I finally got down to the last two bales of three-year-old hay. They’d kept pretty well. They were netwrapped however, and the net-wrap froze down or grew down so that when I moved them the whole wrap came off and it tried to fall apart, but the hay was still pretty good,” he says.

Square bales are easier to stack, cover and transport, but most people like to make round bales because they are cheaper and quicker during harvest. “In our region, unless someone is marketing high-value hay (that will be shipped out) nearly everyone makes big round bales,” says Rusche.

He says the key to storing big round bales is to recognize that moisture is the enemy. “We want to maximize the amount of air movement and minimize the amount of time that water or snow can sit on a bale. Overhead protection (hay shed or tarping) for higher-value, higher-quality hay makes sense. Some people use relatively inexpensive hoop barns. The curved hoop gives up a little storage capacity compared to a square shed, but is cheaper to install and keeps moisture off.”

Emily Glunk Meccage, PhD, former Forage Extension Specialist, Department of Animal and Range Sciences, Montana State University was involved with a research project a few years ago, looking at round bale storage outdoors. “We found that how you stack the hay does affect the quality, and the moisture retention of those bales over winter. You want to minimize the amount of moisture and mold in those bales because that can affect cattle health and performance,” says Meccage.

Many people don’t have enough hay yard room to put all the bales in long single rows, and stack some on top of each other to save space, or use a pyramid stack. Even though this might seem more efficient, it can lead to more spoilage.

“We did see some differences between bales that were stored at the top of the pyramid and the bottom. But the mushroom stack where the bottom bale is upright and another placed on its side on top of it had the

most variability,” says Meccage.

“We found the top bales had hardly any change in quality, but the bottom bales soaked up moisture that ran off the top bales, as well as moisture from the ground surface. The bottom bales were significantly lower in TDN and energy content, and higher in moisture content than top bales. “This reduction in forage quality can have an impact on animal performance.”

If you are feeding one group of cattle the top bales and another group the bottom bales they might be getting completely different nutrient levels, even if the hay was harvested at the same time from the same field.

“We did a two-year study and at one location we saw a lot more mold growth in between the bales in the pyramid stack than we did the first year,” says Meccage. Each year is a little different in how much moisture those bales receive, and when.

There are different amounts of precipitation at various locations on any given year; thus hay storage results (amount of dry matter, and quality loss) differ each year. “For example, during the second year of study, our hay storage location at Havre, Montana had extremely high precipitation compared to other years.” Moisture that freezes won’t create as much mold as moisture in warm weather.

“When planning long-term it’s often wise to hold some hay in reserve in case we have a bad year. If you plan to keep hay over for the next year, try to stack it in a manner that it will keep better and not be ruined by moisture,” says Meccage A person could afford to build a hay shed with the money lost in damaged hay over time.

Hay that’s been stored outside, uncovered, may decline in dry matter and quality. “This can result in lower animal performance (lower average daily gains, poor animal health, and possibly even abortion in cows in certain cases with moldy hay).”

Putting tarps or black plastic over the hay can be economical, especially if you’ve stacked the bales on top of each other and the tarp can cover twice as much hay as with a single row. These coverings can often be re-used for several years, which makes them more cost-effective in preserving hay quality. The covering also keeps snow

and moisture from freezing on the bales—which can make it challenging to remove the net wrap or twines when feeding.

HANDY TIP FOR COVERING

A HAYSTACK – Tarps or black plastic are great for covering and protecting hay. The biggest enemy of a covering is wind. Unless the tarp or black plastic is tied down securely, wind can whip and beat on it and wear holes in it or tear it, and sometimes tear out the grommets in a tarp. Black plastic has no grommets and you have to create an “ear” to secure ropes or twines to it, for tying it down.

Any tarp or covering must have a

Obituary

Hinton M. “Tony” Walden, 68, a resident of Brantley, Alabama, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 23rd, 2023. The family will hold a private celebration of Tony’s life at a later time.

Tony’s life was work, and hard work at that. That was the Walden way of life, and he was initiated in it from birth. When friends were at parties and spending down time at the lake, he was working clearing timber and raising cattle. Many might have resented it, but not Tony. He truly loved what he did, and that love lasted throughout his life. There was nothing he loved more than taking care of his land and his herd. Let everyone else go golfing and fishing, Tony could never be happier than he was while doing what he loved. Tony was a sociable kind of guy and always personable with others, but he didn’t do small talk. However, if you wanted to discuss some land or cattle you owned over in Texas, he could converse for hours!

Now, that’s not to say he didn’t know how to enjoy time away. He loved going to the beach with his family as well as cattleman conventions. Tony and Terry also thoroughly enjoyed the time they spent with their friends and cherished every moment together at events they hosted. Starting in the 1980s, Tony and Terry began putting on what became the biggest Charolais Cattle sale east of the Mississippi. These were huge events that involved sales, dinners, and entertainment and they enjoyed it despite the hard work it entailed.

Tony was a graduate of Brantley High School and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Troy State University in business. It was there that he met the love of his life, Terry Hanna, and they went on to enjoy working together in running Walden Farms throughout most of their marriage. They were constant companions and proved you actually can work together with your spouse and still make a

marriage work!! They would later bring their daughter into the business and continued the family tradition of bonding through work. Still, it wasn’t all work. Not only did they enjoy their trips and spending time with friends, but Tony loved to cheer on the Auburn Tigers during the football season. He was also a member of Brantley Methodist Church throughout most of his life, but one of his biggest passions was serving as a booster and supporter of Crenshaw Christian Academy. Tony was a huge part of his family’s lives and the hole he leaves behind may seem overwhelming, but they will continue to keep his memory alive in their hearts and minds for many more years to come.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Hinton & Juanita Mallette Walden. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 47 years, Terry Hanna Walden; their daughter, Hanna Walden Mitchell; grandchildren, Walden Mitchell and Reese Mitchell; and cherished canine companion, Jax.

Anna Marie Mouser, 83 of Independence, passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at her residence. She was born on July 22, 1940, in Newburg, daughter of the late Toney and Freda June (Wolfe) Giuliani. Anna graduated from Newburg High School, Class of 1958. In 1965, Arthur and Anna purchased a 188-acre farm in Independence that became Mouser Charolais Farm. Today the herd is one of the most wellknown and respected in the state. The family was active in 4-H, exhibiting market animals at the Preston County Buckwheat Festival for over fifty years. Over the years, they participated in several county, state, national events and expos. Anna was a member of the West Virginia Charolais Association where she was Secretary/Treasurer and the American-International Charolais Association.

Anna was a Master Gardener having completed the programs through the Preston County Extension Service. She grew several different vegetables and she canned to share with the kids and families. Anna was vice president of the WVACD Auxiliary. In 1981, Anna started the Country Kids 4-H Club where she was very active and in 2003, she served as the Farmer’s Day chairman for the Preston County Buckwheat Festival. Many ribbons, banners and trophies have been won over the years.

She was also a faithful member of the Grafton Baptist Church since 1985 where she was past children’s church teacher and treasurer. She retired from Southern States in Grafton with over twenty-five years of service. Anna was inducted into the WV AG and Forestry Hall of Fame.

She is survived by her loving husband of sixty-four, Arthur Ray Mouser, whom she married on December 3, 1958; five children, Cynthia McCloud and Patrick, Newburg, Timothy Mouser and Melissa, Gladesville, Michelle Harward and Don, Grafton, Thomas Mouser and Michelle, Valley Furnace, Maria Shriver and Dave, Grafton; 13 grandchildren, Sharon(Jason), Jason(Kayla), Logan, Brooke(Steven), Miranda, Lakin, DW, Rebekah, Josiah, Chloe, Briar, Aaron and Kinsey; 14 great-grandchildren, Tylar, Morgan, Mara, Karson, Alyson, Madyson, Landon, Weston, Stella, Gatlin, Riley, Colt, Archer, Thea; one brother, Hugh Giuliani and wife, Carol, Arthurdale; two brothers-in-law, Wayne Mouser, Independence, Dave Born, Va.; several nieces and nephews. they learned during the CharFocus Youth Conference. The AIJCA Junior Board ended the morning reflection by encouraging each of the CharFocus participants to seek out leadership opportunities in the clubs, chapters, and other organizations they are currently involved in. This challenge included considering running for the AIJCA Junior Board at some point in the future! I thoroughly enjoyed my time meeting and interacting with numerous delegates to this year’s VitaFerm CharFocus Youth Conference. Kaitlyn Chism, Director of Junior Activities, Reagan Dolan, Summer Intern, and the AIJCA Junior Board did a wonderful job planning, coordinating, and providing delegates with plenty of opportunities to develop their leadership skills.

reinforced place for securing the tie. A simple hole will always tear and pull out. Some tarps have better reinforcements (stronger grommets) than others, but they can still occasionally tear out and you have to create another place to secure your rope or twine.

Black plastic is very strong and durable, but will always tear out if you create a hole in it for tying, and is so slippery that it’s hard to make a good “ear” to hold a rope or twine that won’t just pull off if the tension is great—such as in a strong wind.

A good way to create a new holding spot on a tarp (with a ripped-out grommet) or to make secure “ears” on black plastic is to use a small smooth rock (or something like a golf ball) folded into the material, with the twine tied tightly around the rock. This creates a solid, secure lump in the tarp or plastic that will hold the rope or twine and it can’t pull off.

To create a secure ear, place the rock on the tarp or plastic where you want to tie your rope or twine, folding the tarp/plastic up over the rock so it is completely engulfed and covered. Then tie one end of your rope/twine securely above the rock, in the small “neck” above it, using a square knot or any other knot that will hold and never slip. This will keep your rope/twine secure and it can’t pull off over the lump created by the rock, and it won’t pull off or tear out.

Tie the other end to the bales (below the tarp), tying to the net wrap or bale

twines, or to big tires on the ground next to the hay or straw stack.

To keep the wind from getting under the tarp or black plastic (which is the main reason a covering fails and gets torn off a stack), tie it down in many places—using all the grommets in a tarp (and sometimes creating more tie spots if the grommets are too far apart or not in the right place) or creating many “ears” on the black plastic.

With big round bales, long rows (two bales high) with adequate space between the rows, enables you to tarp each row by itself (for shedding rain or snow) rather than having rows touching one another. Putting a big tarp or black plastic over multiple rows creates valleys between the rows, which collects water/snow and creates big ice chunks when it freezes.

As double insurance against a strong gust of wind getting underneath a tarp or black plastic, run a rope or long twine over the top of the stack, in multiple places, to help hold it down. It’s easy to throw a small rope or long baling twine over the stack if you tie a small rock to the end you throw over—to help it arc over the stack and keep any wind from interfering with your toss—and then you can tie it down securely on each side of the stack. With solid “ears” and a few tie ropes over the rows of bales, the tarps or plastic can withstand tremendous wind without tearing or blowing off.
