Did You Ever Wonder Why... by John Boddicker, executive vice president Time seems to be moving so fast these days and the older we get, it seems that time moves even faster. What in the world happened to 2010? It seems like just yesterday we were in Denver with the National Western activities. A well known sale manager and friend has often made the statement “Can’t we just all get along?” Wouldn’t that be great? But we don’t live in a perfect world so it “ain’t goin’ to happen!” In many situations or issues that arise a compromise could be arrived at that benefits both sides. But, due to strong egos, strong ideology, lack of knowledge or in some cases, lack of common sense is the missing ingredient, a compromise isn’t even in the realm of being accomplished. If we all step back from our differences and reflect on what could have been, in most cases we probably would have gone a different route and everyone involved would have been in a better situation. From a personal standpoint in recent months I have witnessed two very heart breaking losses of a families loved ones due to tragic car accidents. When witnessing such an outpouring of emotions, I find myself sitting at the services thinking about the things in life and business that we can’t seem to agree on. In the grand scheme of things they really don’t mean much. We all know that life moves on and we need to cope with the everyday problems that are thrown
4
our way, but some days wouldn’t it be nice if we could all just get along and make a better life for all concerned? As the breed moves forward, Maine-Anjou breeders across the country need to re-connect and make it a priority to work together, focusing on increasing the overall popularity and use of the breed. What an unbelievable time for new, as well as established breeding programs, to step forward and promote the positives of their breeding programs. In the livestock industry cycles come and go. Those of us in the pedigreed livestock business fully realize the swings in the marketplace due to breed popularity, regardless of the basis for that popularity. While the junior shows are still very competitive, the overall number shown within the division seems to be smaller than a few years ago. This would be true at the summer shows versus the early show season events when there are a very adequate number of females in the calf divisions. The question is “What has happened to a number of those early females/exhibitors?” Did the heifers not hold up to the rigors of the road, was the circuit dominated by one or two thus exhibitors gave up the chase or were there other factors such as the limit of school days missed, cost of travel, etc? How often do you see a set of genetics, or for that matter, individual animals thrive at one operation and struggle at another
location? Somewhere there is an answer to that question. Those that struggle can only better the situation by working to find the answer and capitalizing once an answer is found. There is no doubt that a large geographical change demands some time for adaptation. Weather and nutritional adaptation will increase the need for proper management if any decline in production is to be kept at at a minimum. In some cases, promotion/marketing along with high level management is a part of what is purchased only to find out that if the intensity is not kept at that level; the potential of dollar return does unfortunately diminish. Raising pedigreed livestock and expecting a premium carries with it some demands; you have to be raising a product that other people need or want. For long term business you need to communicate and keep the customer base happy, timely paper work is a must and the operation and cattle need to be in condition to market adequately. Working at the promotional/ marketing aspect of the business can be overwhelming, but can be very costly if you don’t pay attention to details. Keep a watchful eye on the genetic performance of your Maine-Anjou cattle. While some breeders discard the worth of EPDs, there is some truth in numbers and true commercial producers looking for herd bulls
November/December 2010
Headquarters do indeed ask for documented performance. The promotional tag line used for the Maine-Anjou breed in the early 90’s was “The Performance Breed”. In the quest for moderate frame size, breeding programs have sacrificed true performance, so a very fine line exists on what you gain versus what you have lost. To help illustrate this point, let’s say one Maine-Anjou breeder sells a set of MaineTainer bulls along with a set of Maine-Anjou bulls to a commercial operation that will also be running a set of bulls of another breed. If we assume that the three different groups of females to be serviced are equal in kind, age, management and at weaning time there is a measurable amount of difference in pounds weaned per calf, then
one or two of those bull sets will not be used again. In the nonterminal program make sure the Maine-Anjou genetics you have sold the commercial customer have added value to his cow herd. That value can come in different traits depending on what the breeder was trying to improve upon. Follow up to make sure the bulls you sold are indeed doing what they are supposed to, that is key to long-term marketing success. Reproductive ability of the retained females is an obvious must. Too much milk is a problem in many ways, too little milk can be disastrous with calves coming into light. Females need to adequately keep their condition, re-breed on time and stay functional from a foot and
leg standpoint. Are the genetics you are using and passing on to your customer meeting those demands? As we move toward 2011 take a few minutes and evaluate your breeding program. Recognize the strong points, uncover the weaknesses and get a plan together to improve the genetic output and profitability of your Maine-Anjou operation. MaineAnjou genetics have the ability to provide a lot of positives to the beef industry. It is up to you, the Maine-Anjou breeder, to make sure the right genetics are being promoted and used. From all of us here at the American MaineAnjou national office we sincerely hope that your 2010 Maine-Anjou endeavors were successful and that a profitable 2011 lies ahead.

Service, Service, Service... by Dave Steen, commercial developmental director
The last few months have found me having a lot of windshield time visiting a number of seedstock and commercial producers and attending many beef functions throughout the country. Since June, I have worked closely with many commercial cattle producers to assist them in helping to place their calves into feedyards that are interested in Maine-Anjou influenced cattle and are willing to return information back to the producer. These calves have been consigned to be sold on video auctions, in sale barns or offered privately. Sales for Maine-Anjou influenced calves have been very good. When selling privately, cattle must first be viewed, then a price has to be agreed on (I never set anyone’s price), delivery date agreed upon, sex and weight slide figured, shrink, vaccination protocol, load size, who sorts the cattle (again, I try to stay out of this) and lastly, type of payment and when and how it will be made. I have been fortunate to have help from some of our seedstock breeders, who supply the genetics to these producers, to intervene in solidifying the needed trust factor to seal the deal between both parties. These particular breeders were very helpful and they were what I would call a “Full service provider.” Sales the following year were much easier due in part to their ongoing assistance. To them I say “Thank you!” The price of calves selling this summer and fall have been
8
extremely good. Prices have been especially good on the high end quality calves that have qualified for programs that are age and source verified, certified all natural, non-hormone treated, non-implanted and have a known history regarding carcass traits and feeding performance. Each one of these qualifications has earned producers additional premiums of one to three dollars per hundred weight. If you have customers that are interested in qualifying their calves for any of these programs, please feel free to contact me. With fewer cows in the country since 1959, daunting challenges lie ahead as the industry says the competitiveness of supplying the right genetics and services offered will become more critical in the years ahead to achieve greater success. When we talk about the future growth of the seedstock business, the arrow gets aimed directly towards the Full Service Genetic Providers (FSGP). FSGP were discussed in one of my articles some time ago and I thought I would revisit this timely topic again. Timing is everything! The following quotes concerning the future outlook of FSGP are printed with permission from Dr. Harlan Ritchie, distinguished professor from Michigan State University: Dr. Ritchie predicts that within the next 10 years, customer demand for more service and more genetics will change the beef seedstock business forever.
“Generally, everybody can somewhat provide similar genetics. All seedstock producers have the opportunity to build their programs to include good genetics and EPDs. That means that service will become a bigger and bigger item,” says Ritchie, long time seedstock producer and a trusted industry analyst of breed and breeder trends. “When you look at the larger breeders, the movers and shakers, they already have superior genetics. It will take more than superior genetics to be on top of the game.” Specifically, “I think we’re going to have a new acronym in the seedstock business: FSGP which stands for Full Service Genetic Provider. These will be large breeders, likely producing more than one breed of cattle or hybrid.” “Or,” says Ritchie, “These will be smaller breeders compromising larger systems that will allow them to produce, market and provide customer service like large breeders can.” “Even now, mainstream commercial cattle producers are reluctant to attend an auction sale that isn’t offering a large number of bulls,” says Ritchie. “Let’s face it, commercial producers are demanding a sizeable cafeteria of genetics and services to choose from and it’s going to take a large entity to provide what they demand. Smaller seedstock producers, including myself, have to recognize that.” FSGP now and in the future
November/December 2010
Commercial Connection are providing customers with a host of informational tools and consultation on everything from herd health and nutrition to breeding schemes and marketing. As an example, Ritchie explains, “Commercial customers are going to need help from their seedstock suppliers in fitting EPDs to their specific production and marketing environments, and perhaps fitting that information into selection indicies.” “Really, as a group, these full service producers will be like a mini extension service,” says Ritchie. “They will offer customers a wide array of products and services, some of these services will be offered in connection with the breed associations. Breed associations will help full service providers offer some of these services.” Moreover, based on anecdotal evidence and gut observation, breeder consolidation is well underway, with fewer than one percent of the nation’s seedstock producers building at least 10% and perhaps as many as 20% of the bulls traded each year. Dr. Ritchie emphasizes, “Small breeders will still be able to participate, but to do so they will likely have to be involved in a different model of production.” Short of providing seedstock for an extreme niche market, Ritchie expects these current seedstock production and marketing models to grow in use, alongside large seedstock operations. “Bottom line, whereas the mantra of success in the real estate business has always been location, location, location.” “In the seedstock business it’s going to be service, service, service” says Ritchie. Customer service takes a lot of time and expense, but is a
November/December 2010
definite must in today’s market if your seedstock business is to grow, prosper and survive. It takes a total commitment from everyone involved to help your customers succeed in their breeding programs. My belief is that customers are buying your genetics because they want to be a part of your “program” and it is up to you to help them succeed in their breeding program. Customer service is a daily commitment, 365 days a year. This means doing business in a time frame that is conducive to make your customers satisfied. Good customer service starts with returning their phone calls in a timely manner, transferring registration papers as soon as possible and responding to their questions and concerns. A personal visit to see their operation can be very helpful and important to both of you, it shows your customer your true concern and involvement in their breeding program. Be professional in your approach and stand behind your product. FSGP is the “buzz word” in the beef industry. In any business, communication and staying in touch with your customer is essential. Here is a partial list of some of the services you might consider: • Get to know your customer’s need and direction of his/her program. • Offer to assist in merchandising the customer’s feeder cattle and selection of grid for finished cattle. • Assist in obtaining feeding, performance and carcass data. • Help to develop health and nutrition programs. • Help to identify the customer’s genetic needs to
compliment their breeding program. Does he/she need more marbling, higher cutability, maternal strength or performance? • Should you provide a guarantee for first year bull breeding? • Provide educational opportunities such as field days, feedlot tours and newsletters. • Assist the producer in the selection of an alliance that works for the customer. • Ultrasound breeding stock available for sale and encourage the commercial producer to ultrasound the females. • Help the producer to understand the breed strengths and weaknesses in crossbreeding systems. • Offer delivery. This gives you the opportunity to see the customer’s livestock and facilities and you also have the chance to get to know the producer better. • Help in selecting replacement heifers and encourage ultrasounding them. • Provide volume discounts. • Send out a newsletter to your customers once or twice a year. Recently a seedstock producer said to me, “It takes a long time to earn someone’s trust and business and only one bad deal can ruin it.” Customers expect more today and they should because of their investment. We all need to work together to make sure we all survive and prosper in the business of producing beef. In the end it all comes down to honesty, integrity, the right genetics and treating your customers the way that you like to be treated.

I’m here to help you in any capacity that I can. Lastly, there is still time for those of you that are still interested in the Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity (TCSCF). TCSCF will offer four delivery dates for steers and heifers in October, November, December and January. The exact delivery dates are listed in the table. These tests will be for calves weaned a minimum of 30-45 days preferably. They recommend using a MLV at weaning or a cow safe MLV two weeks prior to weaning. If killed vaccine is your only option, repeat at three weeks. They have dropped the Haemophilus Sommus vaccine from the recommended list. You and your veterinarian can decide if you should use Pasteurella vaccine. Cattle may be delivered on more than one date. Please contact Dave if you have questions concerning the TCSCF program. Entries should be returned to TCSCF along with a $20 per head pen reservation deposit by the dates in the above table. This fee will be credited back to your account. Producers delivering a minimum of 10 head can receive

Their Web site is www.tcscf.com. Please consider entering cattle in this feedlot futurity. The American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) will be holding Town Hall meetings across the country to inform and update producers about the Maine-Anjou breed. I will share the data we have collected from the National Feeding Trial, Carcass Merit Test, National Sire Test, harvest sheets and closeouts from feedlots that have fed MaineAnjou calves. This data along with producer testimonials will help cattlemen see the added value that can be produced by using Maine-Anjou genetics. These meetings will be very informal, but educational and can be a huge benefit to all involved. We have had meetings in

These meetings are an excellent source of information and provide a widespread advantage for all of us to promote and market the strengths and added value benefits of the Maine-Anjou breed. If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a TIMELY MANNER to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order they are received; the rush fee is currently $25 (covers eight head). If rush work is faxed, it is the breeder’s responsibility to give us a follow up phone call to make sure the work is legible and to cover all fees. It is not our office staff’s responsibility to call breeders who fax in registration work. No work will be released until payment is complete. We will do our best to complete rush work received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday-Friday), so it will go out the next business day. There is no same-day turn-around. For big weekend events, such as state expos, we reserve the right to require work to be in our office no later than 2 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to that weekend’s show. Please plan ahead. Thank you!

The "Maine Family" by Bailey Core, Region II Director
When I was thinking about what I was going to write about for this article in the Voice, I was struggling to figure out what I wanted to write about. I kept thinking back to Candace Muir’s farewell speech she gave during the annual banquet at the 2010 National Junior Show. Instead of giving the traditional farewell speech, she sang “The House that Built Me” by Miranda Lambert. After she sang, Candace talked about how she knew that no matter what happens in her life she would always have the people in the Maine-Anjou breed to fall back on. She said that she knew the people that she has met over the years through the Maine-Anjou breed would always support her in all of her endeavors and that could not mean more to her. I could not agree with Candace more. I believe I will always have a “family” in the Maine-Anjou breed. Knowing I am going to a show to see these people is a big reason I get so excited to attend. My Maine-Anjou family will be there to support, encourage and help me with anything I need. They are also there for
every MaineAnjou junior member that needs help or support. Some may think the Maine-Anjou breed is too small to be successful or too small to make an impact on someone. I believe the opposite of the breed. I think the Maine-Anjou breed is fortunate to have a junior national the size that it is. Several people, including myself, can walk through the barn and will know every person’s name. We are able to make so many connections and meet many people because we seem to all be one big group. We are fortunate enough to have a smaller junior national, where members are forced to talk to people outside of their state. AJMAA members have to be willing to talk to new people, because there might not be many members from their own state. I challenge all new young members to step out of your group and out of your state, and make the Maine-Anjou breed your “Maine family”.

Digging Through the Reproductive Toolbox and Finding Your Advantage by Jared Knock
Historically, cattle breeders have used conventional embryo transfer (ET) on the top two to four percent of their cows. The “bottom” of the herd is used as recipients and artificial insemination (AI) is used on the rest. The result provides for a greater impact on a few of the best cows; and a 50:50 distribution of sex ratio. Today, innovative producers are using In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and sexed semen on heifers, pregnant cows or even “problem” donors. They still use conventional ET, often with sexed semen, and use AI on some of the cows as well. Often, they will use recipients either from cooperator herds or from their ET supplier. The innovative producer is also likely using cloning to produce copies of their very best cow or sire to even further impact the use of the tools described above. The genetic gain is vastly accelerated and the sex ration is greatly skewed, producing nearly twice as many heifers when desired. In order to successfully incorporate the reproductive tools, let’s review some of the reproductive technology options that are available to the producers.
Embryo Transfer ET is on option that can increase a cow’s reproductive
18
efficiency, allowing her to have numerous calves per year. While the average cow produces six to seven calves in her lifetime, ET can increase her reproductive effiency to numerous calves per year, allowing breeders to multiply the success of their superior pedigrees and breeding lines. ET is a very accessible technology and produces the option to have embryos transferred live into synchronized recipients or have the embryos transferred at a later date. By creating more offspring that are valuable to a herd, breeders can advance their marketing opportunities and improve the reproductive performance of their herd.
In Vitro Fertilization Breeders who choose to use the technology, IVF, have the opportunity to obtain more offspring from valuable females in their herd. IVF is a technology that allows breeders to collect offspring from donors, pregnant cows, virgin heifers, as well as problematic females that have had difficulty in conventional breeding attempts. When compared to ET, IVF may further maximize the potential of an elite female in a shorter time period, as the interval between IVF is shorter than the interval
between traditional ET. While conventional ET generally requires the use of two to three units of semen per donor, IVF can be used to maximize the value of rare, sexed or expensive semen. One unit of semen can be applied to oocytes from up to eight different donors or semen from several different bulls may be used to fertilize one oocyte harvest from an elite female. There is a perception in the industry that IVF is a more costly option. However, it actually becomes more cost effective than traditional ET on donors that produce limited numbers of embryos. This fact, coupled with the opportunity to increase the number of calves, the sex ratio of the calves, along with the ability to increase the opportunities for collections, make IVF a leading choice.
Sexed Semen When a breeder decides that one gender may be more valuable than the other in relation to their breeding program, they can employ the use of sexed semen. Using the technology of sexing semen, breeders can increase the chances of gender-chosen offspring. Recent techniques to “reverse sort” semen, used in conjunction with IVF, has provided breeders
November/December 2010
with the option to provide frozen semen from nearly any sire of their choice, have it sorted, and use it in their herd to create calves of the desired gender. For breeders looking to speed up genetic advancement within their herd in order to meet immediate demand, the combination of IVF and sexed semen is a beneficial and logical choice.
Genetic Preservation In the past, the death of an elite animal inherently meant that the genetics were no longer of use by the breeder. The technology of genetic preservation allows a breeder to preserve an elite animal’s genotype cryogenically, allowing it to be used anytime in the future for testing or cloning purposes. It allows the owner of elite animals to preserve tissue on any cows, heifers, bulls or steers, well beyond the animal’s death. Genetic preservation allows breeders to protect their investments and preserve the option to multiply that investment later through the technology of cloning. The cell line is typically created from a simple ear punch. The cost of genetic preservation is often
November/December 2010
favorable to purchasing mortality insurance. It also provides for the option of replacing or extending the genetic impact of a superior cow or bull in your herd.
Cloning After an animals genetics have been saved through genetic preservation, breeders have the option to utilize the technology of cloning. Cloning is the technology in which a genetic twin is created from a genetic donor, using the cell line created from the tissue sample. The calf produced using cloning technology will be a genetic match to the animal that provided the tissue sample. Cloning allows breeders to re-create the genotype of a superior animal, providing a source to extend their genetic influence. Breeders most often look at cloning as a technology to: ● Produce a genetic copy of an elite animal no longer capable of producing embryos or semen (including steers). ● Reproduce a genetic copy of an elite animal that has died. ● Produce quantities of elite individuals for the purpose of large-scale, consistent genetic
influence within a herd-building program. In summary, the “new” reporductive tools will not completely replace the use of the existing tools of AI and conventional ET. The new tools of sexed semen, cloning and IVF are the next step in the continuum of innovation. They provide for even greater impact, predictability and genetic gain. Innovative and early adapter producers will use these tools to improve their herds and gain a competitive advantage.

Extra Voice Maine-Anjou Voice • voiceeditor@kc.rr.com • www.amavoice.com
One Year... by Lindsey Broek, editor/director of communications
How time really does fly when you are having fun. It is hard for me to believe I have been the editor of the Maine-Anjou Voice for a year. It truly does seem like just yesterday I was sitting at my desk thinking, wow... what have I gotten myself into! Well, since that time I have figured out just exactly what I did get into... a TERRIFIC organization and a job I look forward to going to every day. Throughout the past year I have had the opportunity to meet so many amazing people in the Maine-Anjou breed who are passionate about their cattle and I feel like we are family. Thank you to each and every one of you for your patience and kind words over the course of this last year. I learn something new everyday and will strive to do the very best I can for the association in the days to follow. As usual summer was too short, no one knows what happened to September and we are in full swing for the fall sale season, my absolute favorite time of the year. It is a chance to meet up with
old friends, make some new ones and evaluate the great cattle our breeders work so diligently to produce and market every year to you. I am excited to see what this year’s calf crop brings, it is sure to be second to none. Good luck to everyone with your production sales this fall and spring. Something we can all look forward to is our national show this year, held in conjunction with the 2010 North American International Livestock Exposition (N.A.I.L.E), Louisville, Ky. New to this year's N.A.I.L.E. is the "Maine Focus" Maine-Anjou sale. Sure to be a highlight for many in Louisville, I look forward to evaluating the great Maine-Anjou genetics on display at such a prestigious event. The sale will be managed by Kevin Mears, if you have any questions regarding the sale please feel free to contact Kevin. Just a reminder, the entry deadline for the 2011 Bright Lights sale is Nov. 15, 2010. The Bright Lights of the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) do shine
down on Maine-Anjou alley. What better place is there than Denver to market the best of the best each breeder has to offer but the NWSS. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the AMAA, Dave Steen or Dustin Layton and they will be happy to assist you. When planning ahead for the New Year, let's not forget about your 2011 advertising and marketing plan. Remember all of the valuable tools we here at the Voice have to offer you. Whether that may be with ad design, e-mail blast, banner ads or our new DIY program, we are here to help you succeed. If anyone of you have questions about advertising please feel free to contact myself or Kasey. I hope the rest of 2010 brings you much success and reward. I look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming shows and sales. Travel safe!
