Mother nature has briskly bestowed upon us her season of chilly nights and frosty mornings. However, rather than hibernate away, layer yourself up and venture on out and support some of the fabulous restaurants, cafés, and wineries within this issue along with some of the other wonderful businesses featured. If you’re considering a weekend wander, be sure to wrap up for the Winter Shiraz Festival scheduled for July 2-3. Enjoy fine wine, good food, and a great time at participating wineries across our region.

Fishermen’s Pier has been home to some of the best seafood in Geelong for several years, but what tends to be lesser known is their extensive lunch and dinner options that are also suitable for people who prefer non-seafood dining experiences. Owner Paul Ramia and Chef Sourav Roy, referred to as just ‘Roy’ by his co-workers, have been working together to create a dining experience like no other at Fishermen’s Pier. Chef Roy is no stranger to the cooking industry, with several years under his belt. Roy says, “I’ve been here (Fishermen’s Pier) for nearly a year. But I’ve been cooking for over seventeen years.” Both Roy and Paul have been big fans of seafood long before they began working alongside each other at Fishermen’s Pier and it’s evident that many of the diners visiting the restaurant are lovers of the marine catch too. Paul, who has more than 10 years’ experience as the restaurant owner and four years as the manager says, “Since COVID we started off quite slowly but over the summer months we were really busy. Even with the weather being so cold at the minute we are still getting people through the doors for lunches and dinners which is really good.” Roy initially started as a Sous Chef, but quickly progressed to Head Chef at the fine dining establishment. Roy says, “When I first started, I was Sous Chef. I became Head Chef and have taken charge from just before January and have been introducing a lot of new and improved dishes to the menu.” There’s always something new on the menu at Fishermen’s Pier, so expect a surprise with every visit with the menu changing to incorporate dishes that have appeared on the specials board that people loved. Paul says, “The good thing is if it works on the specials board, we will put it on the menu. That’s why the changing menu works so well.” The restaurant itself, which has some stunning views and gives the feeling of sitting on top of the 14

water rather than alongside it, is the perfect place to take seafood lovers and seafood sceptics alike. Paul says, “Our specialty dish is the seafood platter, it’s been around for a long time here. So, it’s all fresh seafood, that’s our go-to. It’s always been a seafood restaurant, but we are trying to make it a bit more extensive with more casual dining and non-seafood options as well.” There are two menus per day, with a lunch menu and a dinner menu, there’s bound to be something for absolutely everyone to enjoy, two of their other popular dishes are an Asian Fusion Chicken and a Charred Chimichurri Swordfish.

The Asian Fusion Chicken, whilst an overnight task is incredibly delicious and worth every second of preparation. It is the perfect dish to serve as a starter at a dinner party or pair with rice to give your family and friends a stand-alone meal that is sure to impress even the fussiest of eaters. However, if you want the real deal or you just can’t be bothered cooking but you’re desperate to taste these creations (I don’t blame you), be sure to make a reservation at Fishermen’s Pier.

Chef Roy has been kind enough to share his secret recipes for these two dishes so that everyone can recreate a Fishermen’s Pier favourite in the comfort of their own home. Roy says, “The swordfish dish we introduced to our menu three weeks ago, and it’s been very popular. The swordfish we serve here is served like a steak. We char both sides, serve it on a bed of homemade duck fat potatoes with crispy sweet potato ribbons and garlic butter cherry tomatoes on top and then finally a drizzle of homemade chimichurri sauce.” This flavoursome dish has been carefully created by Roy and with the help of his recipe even the most amateur home chefs can serve up a swordfish steak fit for a king. The swordfish recipe has the tick of approval from owner Paul. “To die for,” laughs Paul. “It’s really great, I had it just the other day!” If you’re hoping to whip up a recipe thanks to a top chef but swordfish steak doesn’t sound like the dish for you, don’t panic! Roy has also prepared an Asian Fusion Chicken dish that you can make at home to impress those that prefer the chicken of the land as opposed to the chicken of the sea. Roy says, “The fusion chicken is a thigh fillet we marinate overnight in sour cream, sriracha and some herbs and spices as well. We top it with a sauce. We make the sauce from a combination of ingredients, and we let it simmer and then reduce it. Then you must crumb the marinated chicken thigh and fry it up, top it with the sauce, sesame seeds and then garnish with spring onion and red chilli.” 16

Greg Holt highlights the array of quality produce right at our fingertips Geelong and the surrounding regions are brimming with some of the finest, freshest, and tastiest produce available, and best of all, it’s right at our fingertips.

E & D WINTER 2022

There’s no better feeling than knowing exactly where your food comes from, whether it’s dairy, meat, fruit and veggies or any other edibles your heart desires, Geelong and surrounding regions have just about everything to satisfy your palate and it’s all local! Greg Holt, who has been in the industry for 30 years and owned East Fruit Market for the last 15 years, knows the importance of supporting local farmers and producers when shopping for your fruit, veg, meat, seafood, dairy and bakery products. “Over the years I’ve seen the focus of customers switch to wanting to support more local businesses,” says Greg. “Particularly young families who are really wanting to support local and focus on buying local products.” 24

The shift to buying local and supporting local farms and producers has been a long time in the making, with consumers beginning to place real emphasis on knowing exactly where the food they’re providing their families comes from. “When I started at East Fruit Market all those years ago, 90% of products were primarily imported, whereas that has now flipped around,” adds Greg. “So, these days 90% of the products we stock here are local and only 10% is imported and that’s mainly because that’s the only place you can actually get the products from.” Customers are wanting to support smaller business rather than giving their hard-earned money to supermarket chains and multimillion dollar corporations.

east fruit market | feature article

“Milk is a really good example,” says Greg. “Some people simply don’t want to purchase milk from these big multinational brands, they’d rather purchase locally.” Shoppers that are choosing to make the switch to locally sourced produce are doing so for a multitude of reasons, but Greg says this switch has nothing to do with money. “It not about price, it’s about looking after the environment, looking after food miles, looking after local small business and of course local suppliers and local farmers,” explains Greg. Fruit and vegetables are essentials most families would be purchasing every week, sometimes multiple times a week, and it’s important to know just where they’re coming from. There are many

local growers in and around Geelong that will have your fruit and veg picked in the morning and in your fridge in time for dinner. “There’s so many local fruits and veg growers around,” says Greg. Even though it’s becoming icy outside with the onset of winter weather and a lot of fruit and veg isn’t currently in season, you can still have your pick of the bunch from local growers. “Rhubarb’s a really good local product at the moment, it’s grown 10km down the road (from East Fruit Market),” says Greg. “It’s picked in the morning, delivered an hour or so later and it’s for sale at that time. There really isn’t that much time between picking the produce and you having it on the table if you’re buying from local growers.” 25

E & D WINTER 2022

You can source just about anything from local farms and producers, whether it’s your staple milk, bread and eggs or your favourite meat, pork and seafood products, there’s suppliers and farmers within 100kms or so of your doorstep producing a range of fresh and delicious food to fill your fridge with.

“Overall, my focus and drive to get people to support local farms and local businesses is about looking after the environment,” says Greg. “It’s about prioritising buying products that don’t have to travel all day or even all week to get to the supermarkets. Looking after local business is really important to me.”

“There’s Wes Eggs, which is about 25km out of town, there’s Inglenook Milk from out near Ballarat, heaps of local breads like Irrewarra and La Madre,” outlines Greg. “There’s cheese from Drysdale, veggie burgers from North Geelong, the best blueberries you can get from The Otway’s.”

The Geelong region is incredibly spoilt for choice with so many local businesses, farmers, producers, butchers, and artisans to select from and support. Shopping local where you can really is better for the environment, better for the community, better for business and of course, better for you.

Meat is something that people often feel quite a bit of conflict about, and ethically sourced meat has become a major priority for a large number of consumers in recent years.

“I’ll always try and inform people on the benefits of shopping local,” says Greg. “You really can’t beat that.”

“Provenir Meats is a really good one,” says Greg. “It’s an ethical butcher so all the meat is ethically sourced. The process happens on the farm where the animal is raised to reduce the stress on the animal.”

Greg Holt is always ready to provide his customers with a run down on all the local produce on offer in the area. To have a chat with him about how you can do better to shop local, head to East Fruit Market in East Geelong.

Almost every food product you purchase from a large supermarket chain has a local alternative if you’re prepared to look for it, and there’s more than just fruit and veggies on offer. Other producers in neighbouring areas providing alternatives include Camperdown Milk, Ravens Creek Farm in Moriac for pork, Otway Pasta Company, and on the Bellarine Peninsula you will find Lard Ass Butter, Adelia Fine Foods for granola and cereals, and Bellarine Smokehouse for seafood products, just to name a few. “There’s so many products that are local, it really covers all areas of what you eat and even what you drink,” says Greg. “There’s even locally sourced cordials you can get from up near Bright, or tea from Love Tea which is a South Geelong based company.” Looking after locals is what has driven Greg to become so passionate about the importance of local produce, and with so much on offer in our region, why wouldn’t you make the shift to support local? 28

Boost your cooking skills at The Sprout About Christina La Fornara, owner, and chef of The Sprout About café located in East Geelong is harnessing her zest for culinary creativity and sharing it through her much-loved cooking classes. In addition to bringing fresh, flavoursome, and great quality food to the table, Chris’ classes are also infused with fun as she teaches her attendees how to whip up selected favourites from her ever popular and relished menu.

It’s no secret that some people have more flair in the kitchen than others, and Chris from The Sprout About is sharing her tricks of the trade with humble home chefs to help them create delicious restaurant quality dishes in their very own kitchen.

Chris has made it her mission to offer people access to affordable, intimate, and informative cooking classes. Focusing on a range of different types of cuisines, there’s something to suit everyone’s taste.

Chris says, “The classes start at 4pm and we normally sit down and eat dinner and have a drink afterwards so they’re a bit longer than your runof-the-mill class.”

There’s everything from sweet and savoury tarts, curry and dahl, desserts and of course a whole lot of Italian fare thanks to Chris’ Italian heritage.

“It’s a small kitchen so we try to keep the numbers pretty low, its normally around eight people per class so people can chat, ask questions and eat together.”

The Sprout About has been helping budding home chefs boost their cooking game for approximately half a decade, and there’s no plans for that to end any time soon.

34

“I’ve been running these classes since I opened so it’s going on five years now,” laughs Chris. Chris has an extensive background in the food industry, with her previous workplace hosting cultural cooking classes. “I just saw how much people enjoyed the cooking classes and I thought, well I’m going to continue doing them,” says Chris. Chris understands that not everyone has access to a commercial kitchen, or the years of knowledge and skills she has under her belt, so her main focus for her classes is making sure everything is able to be recreated by the amateur chef at home. “I make it things that people can do at home and that people can recreate,” says Chris. “I also try really hard to ensure I’m using ingredients that are easy to get and that aren’t going to cost people a fortune if they want to make my recipes for their families or friends.”

Chris’ cooking classes, which take place on Thursdays, are affordably priced at $60 per head making for an inexpensive but enjoyable experience. The classes provide an opportunity for people to come together for an afternoon and evening of pleasure while learning some tips and tricks that Chris has accumulated throughout her career. When Chris first introduced cooking classes at The Sprout About, her aim was to ensure they remained accessible and in demand, and that’s exactly what has happened. Chris adds, “I haven’t seen a class for under $90, and that’s not what I wanted to do, I wanted to create cheap and entertaining classes for people to enjoy.” Previously, cooking classes were limited to one class per month, but thanks to an increased appetite for the affordable, friendly, and most importantly fun-filled classes, Chris has been running multiple classes a month on occasion to keep up with high demand. 35

For a lot of people, the cooking classes which run for about two and a half hours or so, are more than just a learning experience, with Chris saying that she has a lot of people participate in her classes as a way to connect socially, and to also meet new people.

The Sprout About Cooking Classes

The Sprout About cooking classes are designed to be light-hearted, they’re a way for people to engage and interact, have a laugh, and produce fabulous food. Chris’ classes offer active participation, with everyone being involved and cooking together in order to make it a less intimidating and more comfortable environment.

July 7: Gnocchi & Sauces

Chris says, “A lot of the time I don’t like demonstrations, I like to be hands-on to learn something so that’s why I prefer to do it that way,” she adds, “I like to make sure everyone is included, and no one is just sitting back watching.” The classes use the same ingredients Chris uses in her menu items at The Sprout About. Fresh, and locally sourced produce is what you can expect to become familiar with during The Sprout About cooking classes. The Sprout About menu is seasonal, and so Chris puts a real big emphasis on creating food using what’s readily available. The dishes are all made with produce that is in season and available in supermarkets so you can reproduce the recipe to impress your family and friends. Chris’ cooking classes promote easy to make food that excites the taste buds and that’s exactly what you can expect. If you’re wishing to dazzle guests at your next dinner party be sure to sign up for a cooking class with Chris and learn all the secret techniques to help enhance your culinary capabilities, including hints for food preservation. Upcoming classes include a choice of wholesome heart-warming winter dishes such as gnocchi or fresh pasta with complementing sauces or choose the class dedicated to sweet treats if you like to indulge in irresistible desserts. The Sprout About cooking classes are also an ideal way to spend quality time with teenagers, are a great team building exercise for businesses and make a perfect gift for food lovers. 36

With many different food packages to choose from, there is something for everyone – from the most adventurous eaters to those that prefer the simple things in life.

Portarlington Golf Club is the perfect place to host your next big or small function. There’s a wide variety of rooms to suit any function size. The venue is also the perfect place to host a casual get-together, with views over the golf course an appealing feature of the space. Sit back, relax, and have Portarlington Golf Club take care of everything from the space to the catering.

“We can cater all our functions and its pretty flexible with the types of food you can choose from,” Mark says. “We have various function menus and canape menus that you can pick and choose from.”

There are several catering options on offer for functions at the club, with business development manager Mark Hayes proud of the new spaces and menus. With many different food packages to choose from, he said there was something for everyone, from the most adventurous eaters to the people that prefer the simple things in life. There’s even catering options for children if you have a few chicken nugget aficionados under 12 attending your shindig.

“If you love mussels, for example, or scallops or even if you want a seafood banquet, we’ll do it for you,” Mark says. “Everything is possible. The set menus are to give people ideas but if you have booked sufficiently in advance, our chef and our functions coordinator will do absolutely anything for you.”

They are also more than happy to cater for any specific wishes you might have in mind for your next gathering.

Rest assured that you’re being served mega fresh ingredients and local produce on your next 51

visit. Mark confirmed new efforts have been put in place by the club to ensure they’re using as much local produce as possible. “We made a conscious decision to try to access more local, with everything from produce to drinks,” Mark says. Port Golf Club can cater to large functions of up to 200 people, so you and your nearest and dearest can sit back, relax, and enjoy finger food and bar access. If filling a space with 200 is feeling overly optimistic, fear not! There are various sized function rooms to choose from, ranging from those that are large and spacious through to rooms fit for a cosy corporate meeting. Mark says, “There’s a range of different size areas that can cater everything from large-scale functions or to suit smaller, boutique style gatherings.” Portarlington Golf Club’s function facilities 52

are available almost all year round. Mark says spots tend to fill up fast around holiday periods, but if you book in advance, you’ll have the pick of the bunch to ensure you secure your dream function space. “We’re really flexible with function dates,” Mark says. “The only day we don’t open is Christmas Day so realistically if you book in advance, you’re pretty much guaranteed your ideal date.” The overall atmosphere of Portarlington Golf Club is what appeals to so many of its patrons. There truly is something for everyone, whether you’re after a quiet lunch and a hit of golf or perhaps a more rambunctious Friday or Saturday night filled with drinks and a sing-along. “We have a really good atmosphere here, especially on a Friday or Saturday night,” says Mark. “We have live music performing every Friday night and we’ve just started up happy hour again, so it’s just a really good atmosphere.”

portarlington golf club | feature article

In addition to the live music and happy hour specials, there’s also an ultra-modern bar, ensuring that everyone’s glass always stays half full. Whether you’re a beer fan or a cocktail connoisseur, you’ll find your drink of choice and probably even something new you’ve just heard about. “Our bar is very modern for a golf club, we have heaps on tap and also have a huge selection of Bellarine wines, beers and spirits,” says Mark. “A few of our staff here are also really good bartenders and take a lot of pride in creating fun and different cocktails.” Anyone and everyone is always welcome at Portarlington Golf Club – you don’t have to be a golf pro (or even play golf) to enjoy the delicious offerings with the club priding itself on truly having something for everyone. “It’s a bit of everything here. We have local golfers as well as thousands of holiday makers that come through every year,” Mark says. “We’re really focused on trying to make it an enjoyable place for everyone.” Whether you’re looking to book a function, or just a weekend dinner, booking is essential. Robin Brockett, Wine Geelong President

Robin Brockett is a man that sure knows his stuff when it comes to wine. Not only is he Geelong Wine’s President, but he is also the chief winemaker for Scotchmans Hill, a vineyard he has held his position at for more than 30 years.

56

wine geelong update

It’s been a big year for the wineries across the Geelong Wine Growers region especially in the wake of having to postpone events for the past few years due to COVID. Coming into the winter season the events scene is starting to wind down for the local vineyards, but there are still some exciting things on the horizon. “We’ve just had two huge events for a bunch of different wineries in mid-May,” says Geelong Wine President Robin Brockett, “We had Toast to the Coast which was held out on the pier and that was highly successful. We also just had Pinot Affair which was held across a weekend and was across several vineyards.” Pinot Affair was a highly successful event that saw a huge number of wine lovers and newbies to wine visiting various wineries, partaking in tastings, and seeing what the local vineyards have to offer. “Pinot affair actually used to be in one venue,” says Robin. “We’ve got it out to the vineyards now because most of the vineyards involved prefer people actually getting out and seeing their space instead of standing around in a room pouring wine.” With many of the events winding down as the weather becomes colder, there is one final hurrah for Geelong vineyards as we head into the icy winter months, Winter Shiraz Weekend. “We’ve got the Winter Shiraz Weekend the first weekend of July which is coming up as well,” adds Robin. “That’s a really exciting event, we will have people doing masterclasses, dinners and whilst it’s a focus on shiraz it’s really about getting people into the region as it gets colder.” 57

Winter Shiraz Weekend is a combination of wineries coming together to offer patrons an extensive range of free and paid events. The Winter Shiraz Weekend is a feast of food and wine, alongside masterclasses, live music and gourmet produce. “There’s about 20 wineries participating in the Winter Shiraz Weekend,” says Robin. “There are wineries across the Bellarine, The Surf Coast and Moorabool regions. We cover all three regions; Geelong Wine Growers is a big area.” The Winter Shiraz Weekend is a great opportunity for people to experience a choice of different venues as we head into the chillier months. Lots of participating venues also offer visitors the chance to ‘meet the makers’ where knowledgeable local vignerons and producers will help you navigate the Geelong wine scene. “The Winter Shiraz Weekend is the last big event for the season,” says Robin. “We started doing it between six and seven years ago as a way to get people out to the wineries in the middle of winter when people tend to stay inside because it gets too cold.” Throughout the weekend, the regions renowned cool climate wines will be the stars of the show, with a number of talented local chefs producing hearty winter style meals to accompany the various wines on offer. The two-day event provides the perfect opportunity to sit back and relax with a glass of red before winter really sets in across the region. It’s even completely family-friendly so you can have a good time right alongside your little ones. “It’s also held in the middle of school holidays to get some traffic from the holidaymakers that come down here,” adds Robin. “It’s a family friendly event which appeals to the people that are here on holidays, the parents can come and have a drink and bring the kids along with them.” The Winter Shiraz Weekend is just that, a weekend, meaning that if you can’t make it on of the days there’s always a second, or you could really experience the best the region has to offer and attend the Winter Shiraz Weekend across both Saturday and Sunday. “It’s over an entire weekend,” says Robin. “It’s early July and is held on the 2nd and 3rd of July this year.” 58

Robin Brockett also outlined some exciting new developments for Scotchmans Hill this year, with a new bottling facility, new office spaces and renovations to the cellar door and restaurant all on the cards. “There’s some exciting investments happening at Scotchmans Hill at the moment as well,” says Robin. “We are putting in more vineyards later this year as well as about to embark on a journey to build a warehouse for the winery so that we can begin storing things on site instead of at a secondary location.” In the meantime, unpack your best winter coat from storage, rug up and go on out and explore and experience everything that the wineries of the Geelong wine region have to offer this season. Award-winning Wines and Spectacular Views at Terindah Estate

If you like to relax with a glass of fine wine and fabulous food while taking in a breathtaking view, then Terindah Estate which overlooks both Corio Bay and Port Phillip Bay, should be your next winery destination. 61

For wine lovers who might be planning a visit to the Bellarine Peninsula, Terindah Estate is a magnificent hidden gem. Nestled at the end of an unassuming dirt track, this multifaceted jewel offers incredible vistas, award-winning wines, and delicious menus. Terindah, which is Indonesian for ‘most beautiful’, is without a doubt exactly that. With a variety of wining and dining experiences to select from, the estate truly is one of the region’s best kept secrets. This impressive property’s most iconic space is known as ‘The Shed’. It boasts floor to ceiling 62

glass walls providing patrons with panoramic views of the picturesque vineyard and glistening bays which stretch from the granite peaks of the You Yangs to the city skyline of Melbourne. The Shed Restaurant, an original building of the 100-acre property, was converted into the spectacular structure that it is today prior to the introduction of the purpose-built Events Space and Cellar Door. Holly Hakins, who is the Operations Lead at Terindah Estate says, “Our Shed was an existing hayshed, we transformed that space into a restaurant.”

Terindah’s signature restaurant, The Shed, prides itself on utilising the bountiful supply of local premium produce which is also used when creating the restaurant’s themed dinners. Occurring on the second Saturday of every month, these memorable dining events are a night to be embraced. Christmas in July is next on the calendar followed by Italian Night in August. In addition to their next level dining options, Terindah Estate offers visitors the opportunity to experience all their wines which are produced from grapes grown on-site.

Holly says, “We’ve just employed Robin Brockett from Scotchmans Hill as our new winemaker, which is really exciting, he’s an amazing winemaker.” Adding to the magical charm of this enchanting estate and of which Terindah takes great pride in, is knowing that all the grapes have been lovingly grown on-site resulting in an extensive choice of locally produced wines for one’s drinking pleasure. Holly adds, “This vintage we will have a sparkling, pinot gris, rosé, pinot nori, zinfandel and shiraz.” 63

“All our fruit is estate grown, we have our own vineyard manager here who takes a lot of pride in her vineyard, and then they get sent up to Scotchmans Hill where the fruit is processed and the wine making process begins.”

Holly says, “Our Tram bar is open weekends. It’s a gorgeous offering for the venue with an expansive, beautiful deck overlooking the water. It’s a tribute to the owner who sadly passed away earlier this year.”

If a formal a’ la carte lunch at The Shed is not what you’re seeking but you’d like to indulge in a little more than just a wine tasting, rest assured that Terindah’s Cellar Door and The Deck Lounge offer light lunch alternatives.

Terindah is the ultimate day trip destination, whether you’re venturing from the surrounding area or cruising aboard a ferry from Sorrento or Melbourne, it’s the perfect venue to experience some of the best wines (and best views) in the region.

The newest star attraction at Terindah Estate is ‘Peter’s Odyssey’ Tram Bar. Aptly named after one of the late owners of the Estate, the fully refurbished W class tram is not to be missed upon visiting this heavenly property. ‘Peter’s Odyssey’ features incredible views overlooking Corio Bay and beyond and is the perfect spot to savour a glass of wine and a grazing box while basking in the warm winter sunshine.

“People have been amazing with their support post COVID,” says Holly. “Everyone just wants to go out every weekend! We’ve got the ferry from Docklands as well, so we get so many people coming across from Melbourne.” If you’re wishing to visit from the other side of the pond and catching the ferry from Docklands sounds appealing, you may like to make the 65

most of a package deal that allows you to enjoy a stress-free day of sipping and savouring with all the planning taken care of. “We have a package deal with the ferry so people can have a couple of wines and not worry about how they’re getting home,” laughs Holly. “People can come over on the ferry and then they can be driven here via a shuttle bus for lunch and then the shuttle will take them back to the ferry to get them home.” Terindah Estate’s one-of-a-kind Event Space also has a captivating outlook over the pristine 66

grounds and the blue hued bay. It’s specifically designed and fully equipped to host private functions, special occasions, and celebrations such as birthdays and weddings, as well as catering to corporate events. This most beautiful boutique venue includes thoughtfully designed accessible amenities on two levels, ramps, a multi-level lift, ample parking for cars and buses and it even has a luxury glamping village! Guests are also more than welcome to take a stroll through the property’s fig trees and vines or explore the private beach.

BANKS ROAD

2021 Sauvignon Blanc Bellarine Peninsula A fantastic easy-drinking, fun style of Sauvignon Blanc from Will Derham at Banks Road. Sauvignon Blanc’s classic gooseberry nose is active in this wine, yet there’s a distinct savoury nuttiness that supports the fruit. On the palate, fresh citrus and stone fruits come into play, but the wine is balanced enough to ensure there is more beyond that. Definitely some of that savoury flavour from the nose reappears on the palate, indicating sound winemaking decisions that have really helped the wine’s structure and balance. Food pairing: The Sashimi or Seafood Linguine from Banks Road Restaurant

BANKS ROAD 2021 Pinot Noir Bellarine Peninsula

Banks Road have been known for crafting superb Bellarine Peninsula Pinot Noir and the 2021 supports this repute. An inviting clear ruby colour in the glass makes way for sour cherries and raspberry on the nose. The palate is dominated by under-ripe red fruit however the acidity is not overbearing at all, it’s almost yearned for given the oak and alcohol that sit beside it. While oak is there, it’s adept and well curated; a hallmark of the winemaking team at Banks Road and another key component of their ability to produce great Pinot from this region. Food pairing: Duck Breast or Jaeger Schnitzel from Banks Road Restaurant

Bennetts on Bellarine 2021 Viognier Bellarine Peninsula

This is a debut bottling from Bennetts, working with Viognier fruit farmed from the Andresen vineyard in Drysdale. The nose is intensely aromatic and perfumed, boasting an array of apricot, stone fruit and floral notes. While the palate exhibits similar fruit and floral notes, the structure is leaner than anticipated as the region’s hallmark acidity becomes integral to the wine’s freshness. This is a unique wine that highlights and celebrates the region’s diversity and breadth. Food pairing: The Portarlington Mussels from Bennetts Cellar Door

Bennetts on Bellarine 2021 White Label Shiraz Bellarine Peninsula

With fruit sourced from a slightly warmer Parklands Vineyard east of Geelong, the 2021 Shiraz from Bennetts ticks boxes through a cold Winter. The deep ruby colour in the glass alludes to a heavy body, while the wine’s nose bears more under-ripe black fruit with a subtle floral lift. The palate offers more juicy black fruit and offers some savoury / spice flavours that provide the mouthfeel with added dimensions. Overall the length is good and the weight is approachable, making for a pleasant winter warmer. Food pairing: The Blacksmith Pizza at Bennetts Cellar Door

SCOTCHMANS HILL 2021 Swan Bay Chardonnay Bellarine Peninsula

Scotchmans’ Swan Bay range has been designed for drinkability with a sense of place in mind and Robin Brockett’s team have certainly delivered on that remit. The pale straw colour in the glass is highly inviting while the nose gives us some fresh stone fruit and citrus aromas. The front palate bears a healthy dose of bright citrus fruits while the middle and back tend to be a little more oak oriented, assisted by a refreshing finish that supports the theme of freshness. Food pairing: Chicken Involtini from Scotchmans Hill Bistro

SCOTCHMANS HILL 2021 Swan Bay Pinot Noir Bellarine Peninsula

Featuring 100% de-stemmed Bellarine fruit and a judicious oak regime, this is fantastic value for money Pinot Noir from Scotchman’s Hill. Bright and plush red fruits play a key role both on the palate and the nose, while the oak supports a body of tannin that wrap around the fruit with definitive harmony. Overall the structure is bright, convivial and with good length, enabling a Pinot Noir that’s characteristically drinkable from a very good producer. Food pairing: Bellarine Hot Smoked Salmon from Scotchmans Hill Bistro

Terindah Estate

2019 Single Vineyard Pinot Noir Bellarine Peninsula Featuring handpicked fruit sourced from Terindah’s Estate block, this is a lively expression of classic Bellarine Peninsula Pinot Noir. An inviting ruby colour in the glass sets the tone for vibrant flavours of cranberry, sour cherry and dried herb. The wine’s charm lies in its structure, with a tightly wound line of acid that weaves seamlessly around soft and supple tannin. Despite some age already, there’s a wonderful freshness and finish to the wine that will make way for good longevity in the bottle for years to come. Food pairing: The Hand-rolled Potato Gnocchi from The Shed @ Terindah

Terindah Estate

2019 Single Vineyard Zinfandel Bellarine Peninsula Zinfandel, aka Primitivo is native to Croatia, found its fame in California but seemingly has found a unique home here on the Bellarine Peninsula. This is a highly unusual planting at Terindah, but it works in spades. Given the block’s cool bayside climate, the nose veers toward herb and medicinal notes, albeit with bramble and sour blackberry lingering in the background. The palate starts to open up a myriad of dark black fruit notes; supported by a solid structure of acidity and tannin that give great length but aren’t overbearing. A great food wine and an interesting varietal to have in these parts of the wine world. Food pairing: The Grilled Lamb Ribs from The Shed @ Terindah 73
