Landmarks of Malaysia Malaysia is a multifaceted country – ethnically, culturally, linguistically and religiously – and it is this diversity that makes it so fascinating. This harmonious blend extends even to the nation’s architecture. Landmarks of Malaysia brings together the landmarks of the entire country – including the Peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak. From remote Bajau Laut water villages to the Petronas Twin Towers, the breathtaking architecture and natural landscapes of the country’s 13 states, and of the federal territories, have been recorded in more than 300 vibrant watercolour and delicate sketches by acclaimed artist Chin Kon Yit. Accompanying the sketches are descriptions that provide insights into the locations featured, written by architect Lim Take Bane. The collection of paintings is preceded by two introductions. One, on the architectural inheritance captured in the paintings, has been written by Lim Take Bane; the other, on Kon Yit’s paintings as art, is by artist, curator and writer Anurendra Jegadeva. Kon Yit’s work has been widely exhibited in Malaysia and published in books including Kuala Lumpur: A Sketchbook, Penang Sketchbook, Malacca Sketchbook, Landmarks of Selangor and Landmarks of Perak. Landmarks of Malaysia broadens the geographic scope of Kon Yit’s previously published work to encompass the entire country and is his most ambitious project to date. The book will be published in September 2013 in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the formation of Malaysia.

Architecture of the South pacific:

in transition Architecture of the South Pacific: In Transition recounts the recent development of the South Pacific and its fascinating architecture. This pioneering volume, with material that has never appeared in print, traces the European architectural overlay onto this scattered group of islands, and their transition towards a regional identity that has been fashioned by the remote location, the incomparable setting and the distinctive ethnic mix of its inhabitants. The region is influenced by the interweaving of the legacies of contrasting worlds. A series of themed essays present the story of architectural development in the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Fiji, Wallis and Futuna, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Samoa and American Samoa, and French Polynesia. Of particular interest is the recent architecture, for while there are buildings of note from the nineteenth century, major building activity commenced in the twentieth century, notably after 1980. The new architecture is found in a dynamic world of beauty which houses vibrant communities with rich artistic cultures that have attracted travellers, artists and writers for centuries. This architecture typifies the evolution of the islands as they have been subjected to the transformative waves of alien trade, religion, colonisation, war and tourism, followed by post-colonialism and revived nationalism. As with the Pacific region itself, the most prominent characteristic of the architecture is its diversity. The blending of the universal and the local sets the stage for a fresh vision of the South Pacific across a wide range of building types, from spectacular mission churches to sensational resorts in paradise. This book, in full colour, will appeal to architects, armchair-tourists, students and all those for whom the South Pacific is the idyll of their dreams. Jennifer Taylor is an architect with an established reputation as an educator, architecture historian and critic in Australia and internationally. James Conner has spent considerable time in practice as an architect, urban designer, planner and senior administrator.

Living in a Garden

The Greening of Singapore

In June 1963, Singapore’s prime minister planted a tree to mark the beginning of a sustained campaign to enhance the city state’s appearance. No one could have anticipated the transformation that followed. This is the story of that process. Now, 50 years later, highly urbanized Singapore enjoys a green network of nature reserves, large and small parks, tree-lined streets and community gardens that is the envy of other big cities. Singapore has had to make tough decisions. Land is scarce. There are trade-offs between maintaining the island’s rich, natural biodiversity and public demands for housing and infrastructure appropriate to the 21st century. Nevertheless, the National Parks Board, and its partners in the public, private and civic sectors, continue to strive to keep Singapore green. Lavishly illustrated, the book shows how Singapore aims to be a ‘City in a Garden’, reminding us that the community must engage with the greening ‘mission’, if this great achievement is to continue.

Volcanoes of indonesia C r e at o r s

a n d

D e s t r oy e r s

As part of the Ring of Fire, Indonesia is one of the most volcanic countries on earth. The archipelago is home to many dormant volcanoes as well as some of the most violent volcanoes on the planet; Mt Merapi in Java erupts at least once a decade, often with devastating effects. Most people are aware of the destruction that volcanoes are capable of causing, but few stop to consider how beneficial they are to the environment and population. Indonesia’s ability to grow crops and sustain its population is in large part thanks to fertile volcanic soil. The country’s volcanoes have literally and figuratively shaped the nation. In his approximately twenty-five years living in Indonesia, photographer Carl-Bernd Kaehlig has climbed many of these monster mountains and learnt the myths and legends surrounding them from his local guides. Volcanoes of Indonesia: Creators and Destroyers is a mesmerising collection of Kaehlig’s best photographs, which are accompanied by informative captions and an introductory essay that gives the reader a sense of the importance of these mountains.

The Wit and Wisdom of Lee Kuan Yew Former prime minister of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew is well known for his dynamic and mould-breaking approach to government and politics. Having helmed the city state for 31 years as its founding statesman, he has never been afraid to speak his mind on the issues that matter. Sifting through Mr Lee’s extensive published material and interviews with the Singapore and international press, this handy volume presents a distilled anthology of quotes showing Mr Lee’s insights and beliefs at his most acute. Subjects covered include everything from domestic policy to foreign relations, society and economy, as well as his descriptions of family and personal life.

If I were in authority in Singapore “ indefinitely, without having to ask those who are governed whether they like what is being done, then I would not have the slightest doubt that I could govern much more effectively in their interests. (1962)

often accused of interfering “ inI am the private lives of citizens. Yes, if I did not, had I not done that, we wouldn’t be here today. (1987)

THE WIT AND WISDOM OF LEE KUAN YEW

You know, the cure for all this talk is really a good dose of incompetent government. You get that alternative and you’ll never put Singapore together again: Humpty Dumpty cannot be put together again ... and your asset values will be in peril, your security will be at risk and our women will become maids in other people’s countries, foreign workers. ——Justifying pay hikes for Singapore ministers, The Straits Times, 5 April 2007

12 [Singapore] has to be a place that is useful to the world. Otherwise it wouldn’t exist. ——On the key to Singapore’s continued survival in an interview with Charlie Rose, 22 October 2009

12 We absolutely refuse to choose sides. We will not choose sides between America and China or between China and India. ——On Singapore’s way to surviving on the global stage, interview with Charlie Rose, 22 October 2009

12 The Japanese Military Administration governed by spreading fear. It put up no pretence of civilised behaviour. Punishment was so severe that crime was very rare. In the midst of deprivation after the second half of 1944, when people were half-starved, it was amazing how low the crime rate remained … As a result I have never believed those who advocate a soft approach to crime and punishment, claiming that punishment does not reduce crime.

… a country needed more than a few dignified and able men at the top to get it moving. The people as a whole must have self-respect and the will to strive to make a nation of themselves. The task of the leaders must be to provide or create for them a strong framework within which they can learn, work hard, be productive and be rewarded accordingly. ——The Singapore Story: Memoirs of Lee Kuan Yew (1998)

12 My way of constitutional opposition, working within the law, was in marked contrast to that of the communists, and I got results. But without the communists going beyond the law and using violence, my methods would not have been effective. It was the less unpleasant option I offered that made them acceptable to the British. ——Gaining traction with the British colonial authorities while representing the City Council Labour Union in 1955, as described in The Singapore Story: Memoirs of Lee Kuan Yew (1998)

12 Some countries are born independent. Some achieve independence. Singapore had independence thrust upon it. ——The Singapore Story: Memoirs of Lee Kuan Yew (1998)

12 You must have convictions. If you don’t have convictions, you are going in for personal glory or honour or publicity or popularity, forget it. ——Advice to aspiring politicians in Singapore, in Lee Kuan Yew: Hard Truths to Keep Singapore Going (2011)

50 STORIES FROM MY LIFE

And What Singaporeans Could Learn From Them S R Nathan is one of Singapore’s most distinguished public servants. Born into poverty, he survived family tragedy, destitution and the Japanese occupation. After getting a university diploma as an adult, he worked his way through the civil service ranks to become successively a mediator in trade union disputes, a foreign affairs expert, a manager of a media company, a diplomat and a two-term president of Singapore. He has been an eyewitness to Singapore’s history before and after independence, with an insider’s view of many key events at home and abroad. It is easy for the younger generations of Singaporeans to assume that the good fortune they now enjoy was easily won. For them, and for anyone interested in Singapore and its history, Mr Nathan has selected 50 episodes from his personal and official life, which offer insights from which the up-and-coming generation will benefit.

The accidental diplomat the Memoirs of Maurice Baker

Born in Alor Setar in present-day Malaysia and sent to university in England, Maurice Baker was close to the bright Singaporean and Malayan students who went on to serve their countries at the highest level. Among them were Singapore’s future Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and Deputy Prime Minister Goh Keng Swee, and Malaysia’s future Prime Minister Abdul Razak. Baker himself took a leading role in the student organisations that helped pave the way for the independence of his country. In 1967, Baker became Singapore’s first High Commissioner to India. He went on to become – twice – High Commissioner to Malaysia, an important and sensitive role in Singapore’s diplomatic service, and also Ambassador to the Philippines. Baker paints a vivid picture of both diplomatic life and of the larger affairs of state that shaped the countries to which he was posted. He also provides fascinating vignettes of his encounters with leading Asian politicians including Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos and his glamorous wife Imelda. An Inordinate Fondness for Beetles An Inordinate Fondness for Beetles follows the Victorian-era explorations of Alfred Russel Wallace through Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia. While Wallace is recognised as codiscoverer of the theory of natural selection, he was also an edgy social commentator and a voracious collector of “natural productions” – he caught, skinned, and pickled 125,660 specimens, including 212 new species of birds and 900 new species of beetles. Sochaczewski, author of The Sultan and the Mermaid Queen, has created an innovative form of storytelling – combining incisive biography and personal travelogue.

Bruce W. Carpenter is an expert, scholar and writer who has authored and co-authored many books and essays on Indonesian art, culture and history. His book Willem Hofker, Painter of Bali (1993) was the first major illustrated book on an expatriate artist in Bali. Since co-authoring Batak Sculpture (2007), Carpenter has focused primarily on the extraordinary traditional and tribal arts of Indonesia. His most recent work, Javanese Antique Furniture and Folk Art (2009), was a pioneering book on this little known subject.

GOLD JEWELLERY

01664_JS.jpg Anne Richter is a former lecturer in Art and Design at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and is a museum curator in Melbourne, Australia. She contributed to the Dictionnaire Internationale de Bijou (1998) and Magical Ancient Beads (1998), and is the author of Arts and Crafts of Indonesia (1994). Her very succesful book Jewelry of Southeast Asia (2000) makes her the perfect partner for the collection of Mandala Foundation.

INDONESIAN ARCHIPELAGO

This richly illustrated volume stands as a testament to the extraordinary and ancient legacy of the gold jewellery manufactured and worn by the diverse peoples of the outer islands of the Indonesian archipelago. Divided into 10 geographic regions, each section features large, beautiful photos of a broad array of iconic body adornments with succinct expert introductions and highly informative captions discussing history, use and manufacture. The collection includes ancient ritual pieces believed to have magical powers, as well as courtly pieces designed to project power and authority. Beginning with the Southeast Maluku, near the border of the Pacific Ocean, and travelling west through the Lesser Sundas, Sulawesi, Sumatra and, finally, Nias, this volume is a golden journey through insular Asia.

Gold Jewellery of the Indonesian Archipelago features more than 700 unpublished masterpieces from the tribal, ethnic and courtly gold body adornment traditions of Indonesia’s outer islands – Sumatra, Sulawesi, the Lesser Sundas and Southeast Maluku. Made available by the Mandala Foundation in Singapore, these pieces date from the 4th to the 20th century, and many are completely unknown and of extreme rarity and quality. This is the first major book on the gold jewellery of the Indonesian archipelago in more than 25 years. Authors Anne Richter and Bruce W. Carpenter, aided by Mandala Foundation curator Achim Sibeth and David A. Henkel, weave together the latest research, historical photos, illustrations and their knowledge of the history, culture, art and mythology of the region to propose a groundbreaking new introduction that thrusts the virtuoso gold work of the Indonesian peoples into the international spotlight.
