yanmar is a fascinating and diverse country, which until recently was largely closed off from the world. Now that its government has started to embrace democracy, interest in this enigmatic country has increased enormously. Myanmar is as large as Italy and Germany combined, and is rich in natural resources, especially precious stones – for example it produces over 90% of the world’s rubies; but despite its natural wealth, much of the country is still undeveloped and untouched by globalization. The population of 56 million is made up of over 130 distinct ethnic groups, speaking dialects from four major language families. Some 90% of the population are practising Buddhists, and the nearly 60,000 temples and monasteries represent some of Asia’s most beautiful architecture. For the first time this undiscovered country has been comprehensively captured on camera, by 30 of the world’s leading photographers, including nine from Myanmar. They travelled the country for one week producing striking images of the people, landscapes, traditions and industries. The resulting book, 7 Days in Myanmar, is a photographic tribute to the long-fabled country, allowing the reader an opportunity to experience the truth of Myanmar. Accompanying the book’s launch will be a travelling photographic exhibition and a one-hour documentary film.

Grandson of former UN Secretary General U Thant, Thant Myint-U has served in three UN peacekeeping operations and written for many respected publications including The New York Times. He is also the author of two bestselling books. DENIS GRAY has contributed the introduction to 7 Days in Myanmar, profiling the country’s past and present. Formerly the Bureau Chief of the Associated Press Bangkok, Gray has reported major stories in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe. He first visited Myanmar in the 1970s and has covered the country despite being blacklisted for many years. He was removed from the blacklist not long after President Thein Sein took office. JOHN FALCONER has written an illustrated essay on early Burmese photography. He is Lead Curator Visual Arts and Curator of Photographs at the British Library in London. He is an authority on the history of photography in Asia and has published extensively. DR THAW KAUNG and PATRICK WINN will each write a selection of the captions accompanying the book’s images. London is the royal capital of the world. Nowhere else is steeped in such regal riches. Here, dating back many centuries, are the glorious palaces of kings and queens, their places of worship and repose, the parks they laid out and the institutions they patronised. Whether in public spaces or in private corners, royalty has stamped its mark right across the city. Royals past and present can be read about in history books, watched in colourful ceremonies and wondered at in lively gossip columns. But most of all, the royal city can be seen and understood in its wonderful, diverse architecture. John Cleave’s beautiful pictures evoke Royal London’s finest details, its quiet confidence and its enduring majesty.
JOHN CLEAVE is an architectural photographer whose works have been widely exhibited and published in books and journals. He has created three previous books of ‘digital watercolours’ for Editions Didier Millet – Washington: Scenes from a Capital City; Athens: Scenes from a Capital City and Istanbul: City of Two Continents. In Royal London, the artist has returned to the city of his birth, focusing on the glorious regal history that provides this dynamic 2000-year-old city with so many of its iconic landmarks. ROGER WILLIAMS is a Londoner, a journalist and an author. His books on the city include Father Thames, The Most Amazing Places to Visit in London, Top 10 London and The Royal Albert Hall: A Victorian Masterpiece for the 21st Century.
Houses of Parliament
The United Kingdom’s parliament occupies the the Palace of Westminster, once the principal royal residence. It was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style of Augustus Welby Pugin and Charles Barry after it burned down in 1834 and all that remains of the original Palace is the Great Hall. At its west end is the Victoria Tower, for many years the world’s tallest building. The royal standard flies from its mast when the monarch arrives for the annual State Opening of Parliament. At the east end is the clock tower which houses the famous bell, Big Ben. In 2012 the tower was renamed the Elizabeth Tower to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Bahamas Sketchbook
T
he seven hundred islands, cays and islets of the Bahamas are scattered across over ninety-six thousand square miles of the Atlantic Ocean. Only twenty-three of the islands are inhabited, and amongst these, visitors will find an intriguing blend of the old and new, the expected and unexpected. Of those that travel in search of a paradise, many find it in the Bahamas. In Bahamas Sketchbook, acclaimed watercolour artist Graham Byfield masterfully captures the spirit and character of these famed isles, while prominent Bahamian writer Larry Smith interprets the history of the islands, transporting readers to this tranquil and captivating place where classic architecture is found alongside palm-fringed beaches.

BAHAMAS SKETCHBOOK Artist: Graham Byfield Author: Larry Smith 72 pp 244 x 280 mm hardback ISBN: 978-981-4385-58-9 16 books per carton
Here Graham Byfield speaks about his passion and how it has led to to the successful Sketchbook series. What first got you interested in watercolour? At art college I was encouraged to draw with a pen and add watercolour, so there was no chance of rubbing out or changing anything. This was always done “on the spot” in all sorts of weather conditions. It made one very bold in the interpretation of the subject. What has been your favourite subject to paint? I coined a phrase in my description of my style: “architecture in landscape”. Whilst working on the spot I feel this an appropriate description. One of my favourite subjects was a coffee shop on Balestier Road in Singapore when I first arrived in the country (on page 73 of Singapore Sketchbook) – particularly in contrast to the classicism of Raffles Hotel. I also like picking out details of buildings that demonstrate the period in which they were built. London Sketchbook is a good example. What do you love about painting in watercolour? Its fluidity and the versatility of the medium allows you to record the subject matter accurately and rapidly. What started off the Sketchbook series? I was working in Singapore and had done a successful series of prints of old buildings. Sadly, many of them were being knocked down, but in the mid-1980s the government decided to restore what was left – and they did it well. So, some years later when much of the restoration was complete, I put the idea of Singapore Sketchbook to Didier Millet, and the series
was born. I also approached the Singapore Tourist Board with my idea and the chairman, who was a friend, agreed to buy 1,000 books once they were printed. The rest is history! What is it about the Bahamas that makes it such a great subject for the Sketchbook series? Two things attracted me: the light and its interesting variety of architecture, which is still standing – even with the terrible hurricanes they have. The government encouraged a certain style of architecture to stay in keeping with the original Bahamian style. This has helped to maintain a homogenous feel to a lot of the islands and to parts of Nassau.
GRAHAM BYFIELD is an English watercolour artist who has published several books, postcards and prints. His paintings feature cities and other places of interest around the world. The early years of his career took him abroad to work as a graphic artist and creative director for international advertising agencies in various countries. He is now a full-time artist with his own gallery in Menorca, Spain, and he travels extensively to research his series of Sketchbooks, which include Singapore Sketchbook, Jim Thompson: The Thai Silk Sketchbook, Bali Sketchbook, London Sketchbook, Oxford Sketchbook and Amsterdam Sketchbook.

A HISTORY OF THE THAI-CHINESE A History of the Thai-Chinese tells the unique story of how Chinese emigrants to Thailand each embraced the opportunities afforded by the other. A
History of the Thai-Chinese brings to life the rich stories and legends of the Thai-Chinese. This community has had a tremendous impact on Siamese history and modern-day Thailand. Well beyond Bangkok’s thriving Chinatown, the influence of Chinese immigration on the country has been profound. Many modern Thai leaders, including prime ministers, highranking officials and business leaders, are ethnic Chinese, and even the Thai royal family claims some Chinese lineage. Through interviews with descendants of prominent family members, research into family records, oral reports and other sources, A History of the Thai-Chinese relates how a people and a country embraced the opportunities afforded by the other. The story in this richly illustrated book begins many centuries ago, when Chinese merchants, traders, artisans and adventurers worked the land and water frontiers of the Southeast Asian mainland. Many of them arrived with nothing but the clothes on their backs but ascended to become key drivers of economic prosperity in Siam. Successive waves of immigration then gave rise to new generations of ethnic Chinese in Siam, and many of these immigrants now lead businesses that form the cornerstone of the Thai economy.
Here the authors of the book speak more about this fascinating success story. Q. What makes the story of the Chinese integration and assimilation into Thailand interesting and exceptional? The history of Chinese assimilation in Thailand has been longer, deeper and more complete than in other countries in Southeast Asia. The Chinese have penetrated local society from the bottom all the way up to the ruling class. Siam’s King Taksin was a second-generation Chinese immigrant. Even the present Chakri dynasty has Chinese roots. When tracing the lineage of important Thai families back a few generations, we frequently found Chinese origins. In fact, the history of the Chinese in Thailand has become almost inseparable from the country’s history. Q. When does this story begin? This story begins in the Ayutthaya period of Siam. Ayutthaya was the capital of Siam for 417 years from 1350. Before this period historical documentation on the Chinese in Siam tends to be scanty. Despite the fact that Ayutthaya was sacked and burned down by the Burmese in 1767 and almost all documents perished, glimpses of the Chinese community in Ayutthaya can be traced through European as well as Chinese documents.
Evidently, the later Chinese immigrants tend to have a more distinct Chinese identity. This was viewed by the government as problematic. The authors traced the steps in which the Thai government at that time handled the issue during the Nationalistic period. Overall the Chinese in Thailand are still better assimilated than any other country in Southeast Asia. Q. Thai-Chinese families now run some of Thailand’s biggest companies. Why have the Thai-Chinese been so successful in business in Thailand? What facilitated or fueled their rise? The Thai-Chinese came at the end of a long tradition of merchant activity in Siam dating back to the 12th century. Strong merchant communities had existed on the Siamese Peninsula for a very long time. During the late Ayutthayan period the Ayutthayan Chinese not only dominated trade but even ran the royal enterprises. The Chinese community in Siam was a well-educated group. Thus a strong merchant tradition supported by good education and long established networks with bureaucrats are some of the factors that contribute to the Chinese community’s competitive position in Thai society. Q. What are your goals for this book? We want to write a popular history of the Chinese in Thailand.
Q. What were the periods or peaks of immigration from China? Late Ming Dynasty, early Qing Dynasty and 19th century. Q. In the 20th century, the Chinese community assimilated into Thailand. How much do the Thai-Chinese retain a separate identity? The Chinese have been well assimilated into Siamese society before the 20th century. They have assimilated into royalty, aristocratic families and other old named families since the Ayutthaya period. The old waves of Chinese immigration have become totally assimilated and are for all practical purposes indistinguishable from Thais. However the 19th century until the communist takeover of China in the mid-20th century added a new big layer of Chinese immigrants into Siam. The new wave of Chinese immigrants are less assimilated for the simple reason that Chinese women began to emigrate for the first time, whereas before the mid-19th century women almost never emigrated. As a result the older waves of Chinese emigration led to widespread intermarriage with local women. These Thai-Chinese offspring easily lose their Chinese identity within two to four generations.
PIMPRAPHAI BISALPUTRA and JEFFERY SNG HUP KEE are noted experts on this subject. Pimpraphai is a graduate of the London School of Economics and Cornell University. She has published extensively in Thai on this topic. Her books include a collected biography of the early 19th-century Chinese families and their roles in the development of Bangkok, a study of unique Sino-Thai customs and the influence of Siamese women in Thai families, and a family tale of the Bisalputra Family, who owned and operated a junk fleet plying between Bangkok and Canton. Jeffery Sng Hup Kee is a graduate of Singapore University and Cornell University with a Masters degree in Southeast Asian studies. He has written many articles on the Chinese diaspora, Chinese shrines in Bangkok, the Thai-Chinese business community and Chinatown.

THE SWISS IN SINGAPORE
The Swiss in Singapore Author: Dr Andreas Zangger 224pp 247 x 170 mm hardback ISBN: 978-981-4385-68-8 20 books per carton
Since the founding of modern Singapore in 1819, people from many nations have settled on the island. The Swiss in Singapore tells the story of the relatively small but important Swiss community in Singapore. Traders were amongst the first Swiss to arrive in Singapore and they introduced high-quality textiles into the local market. Later the Swiss branched out into other industries including shipping, insurance, banking and the sale of luxury goods such as watches. Swiss companies such as DKSH, UBS, Holcim and Boncafe have contributed to Singapore’s economy and way of life. The Swiss Club, founded in 1871, has also strengthened the Swiss community’s ties to Singapore. The book also focuses on the parallels between the two countries; neither country has extensive natural resources thereby they both rely heavily on trade and finance. Both countries have also faced the problem of uniting multiple cultures and languages into a single nation. The Swiss in Singapore has been researched and written by historian Dr Andreas Zangger and will feature contemporary and archival images, photographs and documents.
Excerpt
It is not surprising that it was three assistants who first had the idea of founding a Swiss shooting club. The range of leisure activities available to the assistants was not particularly wide, and they needed some way of counteracting the rising boredom. The British had instituted a practice of using Saturday afternoons for leisure, which was new to the Swiss. With a certain degree of envy, they watched the British playing cricket every Saturday afternoon. Sport was very important in the colony. The Germans were unfamiliar with cricket; they went riding or played bowls instead. On one of these afternoons in 1871, Wilhelm Heinrich Diethelm, Otto Alder and Henri Fischer got together. Each of them brought a rifle. They constructed a home-made target out of palm leaves, placed it in an improvised shooting range and thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon of shooting. 12
Seen from the air, the startling juxapositions that define Singapore – the old and the new, the city and the natural environment, and the coming together of Chinese, Malay, Indian and European cultures – leap out off the page. The citystate is as much defined by colonial shophouses and 1960s public housing blocks as it is by the towering creations of world famous contemporary architects. Though still a small island, it has pushed against the sea and reclaimed large areas of land, including the ground underneath the city’s two latest icons: Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay. All this and more is revealed in this new book of aerial photography by Richard Koh. An evocative text, putting the images into context and telling the story of Singapore’s miraculous development, has been contributed by Professor Tommy Koh, Ambassador-At-Large, and one of the key figures in Singapore’s modern history.

PIRATES & PRIVATEERS IN MAURITIUS At the beginning of the 17th century pirates infested the Caribbean waters, thwarting the major European powers, but were eventually driven out of the area. Some pirates took refuge in Madagascar, where they tried to capture the lucrative cargo carried by vessels on the shipping route of the European East India Companies. At the end of the 18th century, in order to weaken British influence in the Indian Ocean, France hired privateers to attack commercial ships of the British East India Company. This was an alternative to open warfare, and heralded the privateers’ era. Denis Piat recounts the history of the pirates and privateers in the Indian Ocean, especially in Mauritius – from the pirates’ arrival in the Indian Ocean to the wrecks lying deep down in the seas surrounding Mauritius – through portraits of the most famous privateers among them.

Gold
Jewellery of the Indonesian Archipelago
of the
This richly illustrated volume stands as a testament to the extraordinary and ancient legacy of the gold jewellery manufactured and worn by the diverse peoples of the outer islands of the Indonesian archipelago. Divided into 10 geographic regions, each section features large, beautiful photos of a broad array of iconic body adornments with succinct expert introductions and highly informative captions discussing history, use and manufacture. The collection includes ancient ritual pieces believed to have magical powers, as well as courtly pieces designed to project power and authority. Beginning with the Southeast Maluku, near the border of the Pacific Ocean, and travelling west through the Lesser Sundas, Sulawesi, Sumatra and, finally, Nias, this volume is a golden journey through insular Asia.
INDONESIAN ARCHIPELAGO
Bruce W. Carpenter is an expert, scholar and writer who has authored and co-authored many books and essays on Indonesian art, culture and history. His book Willem Hofker, Painter of Bali (1993) was the first major illustrated book on an expatriate artist in Bali. Since co-authoring Batak Sculpture (2007), Carpenter has focused primarily on the extraordinary traditional and tribal arts of Indonesia. His most recent work, Javanese Antique Furniture and Folk Art (2009), was a pioneering book on this little known subject.
GOLD JEWELLERY
01664_JS.jpg Anne Richter is a former lecturer in Art and Design at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and is a museum curator in Melbourne, Australia. She contributed to the Dictionnaire Internationale de Bijou (1998) and Magical Ancient Beads (1998), and is the author of Arts and Crafts of Indonesia (1994). Her very succesful book Jewelry of Southeast Asia (2000) makes her the perfect partner for the collection of Mandala Foundation.
Batik: Creating an Identity
Gold Jewellery of the Indonesian Archipelago features more than 700 unpublished masterpieces from the tribal, ethnic and courtly gold body adornment traditions of Indonesia’s outer islands – Sumatra, Sulawesi, the Lesser Sundas and Southeast Maluku. Made available by the Mandala Foundation in Singapore, these pieces date from the 4th to the 20th century, and many are completely unknown and of extreme rarity and quality. This is the first major book on the gold jewellery of the Indonesian archipelago in more than 25 years. Authors Anne Richter and Bruce W. Carpenter, aided by Mandala Foundation curator Achim Sibeth and David A. Henkel, weave together the latest research, historical photos, illustrations and their knowledge of the history, culture, art and mythology of the region to propose a groundbreaking new introduction that thrusts the virtuoso gold work of the Indonesian peoples into the international spotlight.

It provides the reader with glimpses into the lifestyle of the Peranakan Chinese community, in all its facets and expressions. Intangible aspects of the culture such as language and poetic forms are explored as well.
GUIDE
A-Z
The term ‘Peranakan’, meaning ‘child of’ or ‘born of’ in Malay, has come to refer to the descendants of traders who intermarried with local women in Southeast Asia. Over time, a distinctive culture that brought together Chinese, Malay, Indian, European and other influences, emerged.
