To combat student loans

Tulsa lawmaker advocates ‘Borrowers Bill of Rights’ State Rep. Melissa Provenzano (D-Tulsa) held an interim study last month focusing on rising student loan debt and its cost to Oklahoma.

Crushing student loan debt is a part of our national conversation. Here in Oklahoma, the effects are all too real. The average debt load carried by students is $31,678.00, totaling over $14.5 billion in outstanding debt with 2.26 billion of that in delinquency.

“Student loan debt affects more than the debtor and the lender,” Provenzano said. “The magnitude of student loan debt in Oklahoma and across the country negatively impacts large and small economies by making it harder on the average worker to have economic flexibility.”

The issue of having high student debt is compounded when you realize that many lenders use predatory tactics to receive higher payoffs from debtors who are just trying to better themselves and get an education.

“The way we finance higher education in this country is broken,” Provenzano said. “and that brokenness has led to bad lending practices that take advantage of our students desire to pursue a degree, and ultimately impacts our workforce.”

To combat these bad practices, Provenzano has introduced the “Borrowers Bill of Rights” and hopes to see the legislation signed into law this spring.

“The Borrower’s Bill of Rights would create a fair, common-sense approach to lending that protects potential, current and former students that have had to borrow money to pay for their education,” Provenzano said.

According to the Borrower’s Bill of Rights, no student loan lender shall: n Directly or indirectly employ any scheme, device or artifice to defraud or mislead student loan borrowers. n Engage in any unfair or deceptive practice toward any person or misrepresent or omit any material information in connection with the servicing of a student education loan, including, but not limited to, misrepresenting the amount, nature or terms of any fee or payment due or claimed to be due on a student edu-

cation loan, the terms and conditions of the loan agreement of the borrower’s obligations under the loan. n Obtain property by fraud or misrepresentation. n Misapply student education loan payments to the outstanding balance of a student education loan. n Provide inaccurate information to a credit bureau, thereby harming a student loan borrower’s creditworthiness. n Fail to report both the favorable and unfavorable payment history of the student loan borrower to a nationally recognized consumer credit bureau at least annually if the student loan servicer regularly reports information to a credit bureau. n Refuse to communicate with an authorized representative of the student loan borrower who provides a written authorization signed by the student loan borrower, provided the student loan servicer may adopt procedures reasonably related to verifying that the representative is in fact authorized to act on behalf of the student loan borrower. n Make any false statement or make any omission of a material fact in connection with any information or reports filed with a governmental agency or in connection with any investigation conducted by the Oklahoma Banking Commissioner or another governmental agency. n Fail to inform borrowers of the federal income repayment options before offering forbearance as an option.

Be sure to hold the ham Holiday time puts me in the mind set of remembering days gone by both good and bad.

Some of my favorite memories are from when I was working for the Livermore family here in Edmond.

At the time, Ed and Marcia along with Ed’s dad and sisters owned The Edmond Sun. I was their general manager and can Ray Hibbard never express my gratitude for being one of the insiders to their operation for several years. We did publish great community newspapers, but we also had a bunch of fun doing it.

One summer day around noon, Ed invited me for lunch at the grand dame of restaurants here in Edmond, Around the Corner. We ate there often and I still do two or three times a week. The first time I enjoyed a meal at ATC was when I first moved to Edmond in 1988. I think having all these new places to eat in downtown Edmond is wonderful but more often than not, I find myself at ATC in the same booth. I get a little agitated when someone is in my place. I understand it is not their fault. They didn’t know and there is no sign on the booth, but folks should just know. It’s the same as when someone sits in your seat in church. I mean really.

Ed and I got a treat that day because Marcia decided to join us for lunch. This is back when Charlotte Worsham owned the place. There was no need to look at the menu for Ed and me because we had it memorized. Marcia decided to order a large bowl of beans but when she did, the waitress gave her a funny look. “We don’t have that ma’am” she said.

The three of us looked at each other confused.

Marcia, always polite, said, “you have a small side dish of just beans, a small dish of ham and beans but no large bowl of just beans”? The waitress shook her head back and forth to confirm the situation as Marcia had described it. Ed and I were stumped as to why they couldn’t just take a large bowl and put the plain beans in it. Marcia unaffected asked the waitress, “Isn’t there any way I can just have the beans in a large bowl?”

The nice waitress thought for a second and said, “You can order the large bowl of ham and beans but ask to hold the ham.”

“Then that is what I would like” Marcia replied. As soon as the nice lady left the table, we burst out laughing. It was classic small town and we loved it.

From that point on, anytime the three of us were in a serious meeting or talking about a difficult problem at the publishing company one of us would lighten up the mood by saying, “Hold the ham.”

Fast forward about 23 years to last week. I’m in ATC which is now owned by the Wiess family and I order a large bowl of just beans. The look on the face of the nice waitress was familiar. It was a different waitress from the person that helped us all those years ago, but the message was still the same. “We don’t have that sir,” she said. I was stumped and hadn’t remembered the lunch from 1997 until she replied, “You can order a large bowl of ham and beans but ask to hold the ham.”

It was déjà vu all over again as they say. I thanked her and then broke out in laughter. I immediately emailed my friends the Livermore’s who now live in Kerrville, Texas. I assured them all was well in Edmond and under the heading of some things never

change. You could still order a large bowl of beans by ordering a large bowl of ham and beans but hold the ham.

On my way out of ATC, current owner Nancy Wiess Meoli was at the register. I told her the story under the promise that she never changes the menu to reflect ordering a large bowl of just beans. It is fantastic that such a process has survived our dear friend Charlotte Worsham. She would have loved it and honestly it is a symbol of what makes Edmond still a small town. All you really must know is that the beans (with or without ham) and the stew and the chili are all good at ATC, any way you ask for them.

As we like to say in the publishing business, there is a side bar. It is another fun memory of mine working for Ed and Marcia Livermore. Back when Charlotte owned ATC, she would only serve small, teaspoons with the soups and stews. It used to drive Ed crazy. Those of you that know my friend also know he is a tall guy towering over most of us. He also didn’t like using those small spoons, so Charlotte had a big tablespoon hung on a nail in the kitchen just for Ed. With his order of a bowl of anything, Ed would kindly remind the waitress that he wanted “his” spoon. They knew exactly what he was talking about. There are no worries about that these days.

When you order a bowl of soup, stew, beans or any thing else, Nancy makes sure there is a proper size spoon put on the plate to eat your lunch.

In the days following the sale of the newspaper, Ed and I went to have lunch at ATC. With her eyes full of tears, she came by the table and said with complete sincerity to Ed, “I am going to miss you. I read your column every day. I didn’t agree with you most the time, but I read it.” You just can’t make that stuff up folks.

If you are still looking for items to buy loved ones for Christmas, Downtown Edmond is a great place to look. Without giving too much away, Bison Creek Clothing has become a favorite of mine. It is located at 1 N Broadway in Edmond. Bison Creek is a retail clothing store. They offer men and women’s clothing, accessories and Oklahoma-made gifts. The store offers a unique mix of quality fashions including suits,

shoes, tee shirts, sweaters, purses and more.

The owners are just as nice as they can be, and they really have an amazing selection of items. The Downtown Edmond Business Association recently held their monthly morning coffee at Bison Creek. I purchased some of the men’s clothing, but they also do custom orders. They have some nice accessories in all prices that would make great Christmas gifts. I really like the cutting boards they carry. They have unique designs.

I bought myself a car for Christmas Not really folks. In fact, the commercials all over the tube hawking purchasing yourself a new car for Christmas really get to me. Does anyone really do that? According the flood of television commercials they do but I’m not buying it, literally.

I’m not against commercial enterprise during the holidays. Shopping for well meaning and thoughtful gifts during Christmas is a wonderful thing. Racing through the big box stores with a cart filling it full of junk in giant boxes on Black Friday is not my kind of shopping. I even understand those that do it if they are making purchases for the special people in their life.

However, buying yourself a new car for the holidays seems to cross that line into too much commercialism to me. Buying one for someone else in your life is a good thing if you can afford it but to promote buying it for yourself is just a desperate plea for selfishness. I am guessing they want to finance it for you as well. “To Jack, from Jack,” is what one actor shouts out in glee for one of the commercials. I wonder how Mrs. Jack feels about that.

“Hey honey, I got you these wonderful comfy slippers for Christmas, but I got me a new car,” is something no husband says, ever. Shopping at Christmas time is great, but the car companies should stick to promoting buying their products for a loved one or heaven forbid someone in need for Christmas and not for yourself.

Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation scientist Sathish Srinivasan, Ph.D.

Breakthrough may lead to a cure for disease Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation scientists have revealed new clues that could help in the development of potential therapies for lymphedema.

Lymphedema is a disease characterized by dramatic and painful swelling in the limbs that often leads to infections. It can result from congenital mutations, surgery, radiation treatment for cancer or infection, and there is currently no cure.

OMRF scientist Sathish Srinivasan, Ph.D., and his lab study the inner workings of the lymphatic system, a network of vessels and lymph nodes that spans the entire body. They work on a gene-by-gene basis to understand what leads to the disease.

“It is critical that this system works properly for overall health and for the entire body to function properly,” said Srinivasan, who was recruited to OMRF from St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in 2013. “Defects in lymphatic vessels cause lymphedema, which can be devasting, but also have been linked to a wide range of health consequences, including cancer, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s and obesity.”

One of the genes studied in his lab, GATA2, is associated with human lymphedema. Srinivasan’s group hopes to understand why mutations in GATA2 lead to lymphedema and develop approaches to treat this dis-

order.

They discovered that GATA2 regulates a small molecule called microRNA-126, which helps with the regulation of gene expression. When GATA2 was mutated, there was too little microRNA-126 expression in the lymphatic vasculature. “In our studies, we found that cells lacking GATA2 or microRNA-126 were defective in their ability to interact with each other,” he said.

With this discovery, they have also learned that they could overexpress microRNA-126 to successfully rescue some of the cellular defects associated with cells lacking GATA2. The findings were published in the journal Development.

“This research has the potential to be incredibly important for translational medicine because overexpressing microRNAs is becoming an increasingly common and effective therapeutic strategy for a number of diseases, including several cancers and heart disease,” Srinivasan said.

“There is a very real chance we could develop a strategy that will lead to the first human treatment for lymphedema.”

Other OMRF researchers who contributed to this research were Riaj Mahamud Ph.D., Xin Geng, Ph.D., Yen-Chun Ho, Ph.D., Boksik Cha, Ph.D., Lijuan Chen and Gaurav Varshney, Ph.D.

Integris program assists new parents Parent Promise and INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center have started the Right Track program that provides new mothers in the hospital’s Women’s Center an opportunity to receive ongoing parent education and support once they return home with their newborn.

Oklahoma First Lady Sarah Stitt attended a recent press conference to offer her support of the effort. “Programs like Right Track offer parents the tools and resources they need to provide safe, loving, nurturing environments in which to raise their children,” she said. “When children start off on the right track from day one it ensures us that our children here in Oklahoma will be healthier and better prepared for their futures.”

The goal of the new Right Track program is to provide an immediate introduction to home-based parent education and support to the families delivering at INTEGRIS Baptist who could benefit from parent-mentoring services. The program is free to patients and provided through grants from the Arnall Family Foundation and the INTEGRIS Foundation.

“This new concept is groundbreaking in Oklahoma City because it provides new moms an immediate introduction to valuable parenting information before they even leave the hospital and an opportunity to receive ongoing support immediately after,” said Sherry Fair, Parent Promise Executive Director. “The earlier we can begin working with vulnerable families, the better opportunity these families have to start on a path to parenting success.”

Parent Promise offers home-based support programs to assist parents in creating a loving, nurturing and safe home where children can grow, learn and play. Programs include age-appropriate activities and tools that promote healthy physical, emotional and social child development, as well as school readiness.

The Arnall Family Foundation is committed to working with partners like Parent Promise to protect and serve at-risk children and families, said Sue Ann Arnall, founder.

“Prevention services such as these are a critical piece of our community, and this innovative new program provides parents with immediate support and resources they need to create a positive home

environment,” Arnall said.

The Women’s Center at INTEGRIS Baptist has been one of Parent Promise’s largest referral sources for several years, Fair said.

A parent educator is embedded in the hospital’s Women’s Center to introduce new families to inhome parent education and support services. Patients agree to receive a visit and care/resource package from the parent educator, and an appointment will be set up to make a home visit to that family within a couple of weeks of hospital dismissal.

“As social workers at the hospital, we understand how important it is to equip parents with all the resources and support we can,” said Melinda Campbell, MSW, LCSW with INTEGRIS Case Management. “There are many challenges parents face when taking a baby home. Two of our concerns after discharge are the development of postpartum depression and not following safe sleep recommendations. We understand how important in-home visitation and support is and how much of a differ-

ence it can make in the lives of our patients. Our INTEGRIS staff wants to reach as many families as possible who need these services as quickly as possible.”

Approximately 60 percent of babies born at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center are born into certain risk factors that could be challenging to new parents. These factors include poverty, single mothers and parents being unemployed or under-employed. Parent Promise works with families to help develop the bond between mother and child by stressing the importance of talking, reading and singing to the baby.

“Every positive outcome we want in our state begins with raising healthy and resilient children,” Fair said. “Parent Promise’s goal is to help strengthen families through parent education and support, and this program is a front-line effort in the direction of providing more nurturing homes and families, ensuring children are on a healthy track physically and emotionally and making sure kids are academically successful.”

Cancer Institute & hospital are both honored The INTEGRIS Cancer Institute and Lakeside Women’s Hospital in Oklahoma City were both named 2019 Guardian of Excellence Award winners by Press Ganey.

Burn Center stresses holiday safety The Paul Silverstein Burn Center at Integris Baptist Medical Center wants you to have a safe holiday season this year. Please keep these safety tips in mind when celebrating the joyous season.

HOLIDAY CANDLES It's easy to forget that the lovely candles used in thousands of homes during the winter holidays can be dangerous. To keep your holidays safe, candles should be used by adults only, and used with care.

December is the most dangerous month for candle fires, with almost twice the number of home candle fires of an average month.

Christmas is the peak day, followed by New Year's Day and Christmas Eve. For a safer holiday season: n Keep candles, matches and lighters out of the reach of children. n Never leave a room with a candle still burning n Declare all bedrooms "no candle" zones. Many home candle fires start in bedrooms n Keep candles well away from any items that can catch fire, including cloth, books, paper, curtains, Christmas trees, and decorations. During December, decorations are the leading item first ignited during candle fires. n Place candles in sturdy holders, away from spots where they could be knocked over by children or pets. n Keep exits clear of decorations. Be sure everyone in your home knows your fire escape routes and that there is nothing blocking these exits.

TREE STANDS n Tree stands must be adequately sized to hold the tree in an upright position to avoid tipping over. n Tree stands should be contain a two-day minimum supply of water, covering the stem at least 2 inches n Never let the water level recede below the cut end of the tree. n Don't use any additives in the tree water.

LIGHTS n Bulbs should not be larger than the 3-5 volt type. n The number of light sets that can be connected together must be consistent with manufacturer's guidelines. n When connecting light sets from different manufactures, the most restrictive guidelines shall be used. n Each connected set of lights shall be on a separate circuit. Use only extension cords with overcurrent protection.

DECORATIONS n All decorative trim must be a flame resistant material or be treated with a flame retardant product. n Additional decorations surrounding the tree and not a part of the tree must be carefully placed to avoid sources of heat, such as light bulbs or heater vents. n Combustible decorations such as straw, hay or other dry vegetation must be treated with a flame retardant solution before use.

Funding error outrageous The Oklahoman over the weekend reminded me why I'm always a bit skeptical of government and government spending.

In case you missed it, it was reported that the West- Steve Gust ern Heights Public School District was "shorted," more than $7.3 million in state aid payments over an 11 year period.

That happened when the Oklahoma State Department of Education didn't follow their state aid formula properly.

One reason why we should care is because they noted, in the same article, that Edmond also had been shorted. However they didn't list a figure of how much the district lost.

Some districts in Tulsa and Norman, received too much.

I wonder how they're going to handle that?

"Excuse me, we gave you $4 million too much, can you pay that back by next week?"

Year after year we're always told how education in Oklahoma needs to be funded better. And here we can't even figure out who gets what

and how much?

I don't necessary blame the Department of Education. There should have been checks and balances on what they were doing.

We live during a time where we want to jail a greedy mom who makes off with $1,000 of the school's cheerleader fund. Yet here is a poor school district in the metro that got $7.3 million less than what they were legally due.

That should outrage people.

And who knows if $7.3 million is the final figure. Officials with Western Heights suspect it may have been going on for longer than 11 years.

I would encourage everyone to remember this little mistake next time our public officials ask for more money. Time and time again, many agencies and officials have proven to be poor stewards of our money.

And I'm not indicting every government official. There are good people in office. We should remember that.

Yet suppose a candidate for president was actually successful in getting a 42 percent sales tax to fund Medicare for all. That kind of money would be ripe for fraud and abuse.

Commissioner opposes Sunday sales of liquor

By Brian Maughan For a state that worries rightly over the costs of addiction, Oklahoma has made some baffling choices in recent years.

From marijuana stores on every corner to the sale of strong beer and wine in grocery and even drug stores — and in cutting penalties for some cases of drug possession — we have become an addict’s paradise. Now several Oklahoma counties are considering legalizing liquor sales on Sundays and other holidays.

As Oklahoma County commissioner, I will vote against the measure to submit that change to a popular vote. We need to rethink how we are handling the availability of addictive chemicals, and the harm that availability is doing.

The so-called medical marijuana vote opened the door to a series of bad policies. A measure that required zero qualifying conditions for securing a marijuana card was an open invitation to abuse. While there may be a few medical conditions that could benefit from the active ingredients in marijuana, does anyone really believe that almost 100 marijuana dispensaries in a single ZIP code were necessary to fill that demand?

And does anyone honestly believe that significant quantities of that “medical” marijuana are not making their way into the hands and lungs of young people?

We also have ratcheted down the penalties tied to possession of some of the most addic-

tive drugs, like heroin and methamphetamine.

I support sensible criminal justice reform, but question whether those cases should be misdemeanors.

Legislation that allowed marketing of strong beer and wine in just about any retail outlet further worsened the situation, particularly as it impacted availability of alcohol to minors. Now we are asked to open liquor stores on Sundays, holidays and election days.

New Mexico did that years ago. A study by the Behavioral Health Research Center of the Southwest showed that from 1990 through 2000, alcohol-related traffic accidents on Sundays in that state increased by 29%, while booze-induced fatalities rose 42%.

When the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed that and 13 other studies, it reported that “maintaining existing limits on the days of sale (for alcohol) is an effective strategy for preventing alcohol consumption and related harm.”

Oklahoma recently successfully sued large drug makers for their role in causing opioid addiction. At the same time, we have been consistently pushing the availability of alcohol and marijuana, both of which have addictive potential, and the first of which is by far the most widely abused and harmful addictive chemical in our society.

An observer would be justified in asking how serious we really are about curbing the devastating impact of addiction. That’s why I will say no to Sunday liquor sales.

Latest defense bill gives boost to soldiers

By The Oklahoman Editorial Board The bill that Congress uses to fund the U.S. military is generally designed to ensure the various branches have what they need to provide security for this country and our allies. The latest defense bill does that but also seeks to help the men and women in uniform.

The bill agreed upon last week by House and Senate negotiators includes a 3.1% pay raise for troops and mechanisms designed to improve family housing on installations across the country.

The pay raises follow a bump in pay of 2.6% — the largest in nine years — that was part of last year’s defense bill. The new raises are a solid investment, and they’re important, although this bill's efforts to improve housing are likely to be just as welcomed by many military personnel.

Reuters news agency reported last year about major housing deficiencies on military bases. It found that the problems often were ignored by the private contractors responsible for the housing, and that military higher-ups provided little to no oversight of the contractors.

At Tinker Air Force Base this year, officials found problems — mold, water leaks, rat infestations, etc.

— in about 20% of the base’s 600 family units.

Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Tulsa, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, held several hearings in Washington to listen to contractors, tenants and others about housing. The new defense legislation includes a "bill of rights" for tenants and more oversight of private contractors by military brass.

Rep. Kendra Horn, D-Oklahoma City, said the tenants’ bill of rights would “protect our military families from predatory contracts and provide in-

creased oversight of privatized base housing.” Let’s hope so.

Inhofe and Horn, who sits on the House Armed Services Committee, have strongly criticizing the contractor accused of negligence while running Tinker’s private housing.

An aide to Inhofe says the defense bill will give more tools to base offices that are devoted to housing, and will create a position that oversees private housing across all branches of the service instead of the localized structure now in place.

Said Horn, “Our fight for military families and safe housing is far from over, but today’s announcement is a critical step in the right direction.”

Amen.

Inhofe, arguably the staunchest defense hawk in Washington, remains committed to rebuilding the military’s war-fighting capacity following several years of decline during the Obama administration.

If the funds are appropriated as intended, much of the $738 billion in this authorization bill will help that cause. However, Inhofe rightly points to the people-centric pieces of the bill, which include more oversight of families’ relocation and personal property movement and professional development opportunities for spouses of servicemen and women.

“By putting military families first, we can strengthen our entire armed forces, as well as increase recruitment and retention,” Inhofe says. He and Horn are to be commended for their work in getting this accomplished.

Lankford says new bill would prevent fraud Senators James Lankford (R-OK), Gary Peters (D-MI), and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) applauded Senate passage of their Representative Payee Fraud Prevention Act, a bill that would crack down on fraud and misuse of federal retirement benefits.

“I’m grateful the Senate agreed with our bill to help safeguard federal employee retirement funds from embezzlement,” said Lankford. “Our bill closes a loophole in the law that allows bad actors to get off easy if they embezzle funds from federal retirees. Under the new requirements, it is a felony if a federal employee’s retirement funds issued by the Office of Personnel Management are misused by a representative payee, which is similar to the punishment for misuse if the Social Security Administration or Department of Veterans Affairs issued the payments. This is a simple, commonsense solution.”

“Michiganders work hard to earn a living. At the end of a long career, they deserve the opportunity to retire with dignity and financial security,” said Peters. “Unfortunately, retirees in Michigan and across the country are being taken advantage of by dishonest caretakers who are supposed to act on a retiree’s behalf but instead steal those hard-earned benefits. I’m proud that the Senate has unanimously approved our bipartisan bill to protect vulnerable retirees and crack down on fraud and abuse that

affect hardworking Americans.”

“Arizona retirees earned their benefits through a lifetime of hard work and public service. Cracking down on fraud will better protect seniors so they can enjoy healthy and secure retirements,” said Sinema.

Specifically, the legislation would give US Attorneys the statutory authority to prosecute representatives that misuse funds when they are supposed to act on behalf of a retiree who has benefits from the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) or the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS). Because of an increase in embezzlement of government benefits by dishonest representatives of retirees, legislative solutions are needed. This bill classifies the crime of misusing federal retirement funds as a felony punishable by up to five years in prison, which should help deter deceitful caretaker behavior and provide the same protections that Social Security and Veterans Affairs payees currently receive.

Lankford is chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Regulatory Affairs and Federal Management.

The Subcommittee’s jurisdiction includes the federal workforce and federal employee issues. FERS and CSRS are the primary retirement funds of federal workers, and they are managed by the Office of Personnel Management.

Writer an ex-North teacher

Short story in Christmas book focuses on Alzheimer’s disease A former Edmond North teacher, Katherine Webster, has written two short stories for a book entitled “Christmas Treasures: From Our Past to Your Present.”

Among the stories is one entitled, “Mrs. Claus Forgets Christmas.” It has a very serious theme to it.

“This short story explains to family members how a loved one’s behavior can change when they develop dementia because of Alzheimer's,” Katherine said.

In her prologue, she also writes the following about the disease, which mainly affects seniors.

There are 5.8 million people in America who live with the disease of Alzheimer’s. One in three seniors will die of Alzheimer’s in the next 10 years. Alzheimer’s disease is a type of brain disease, just as coronary artery disease is a type of heart disease. It is a degenerative disease, meaning that it becomes worse with time.

Alzheimer’s disease begins 20 years or more before symptoms arise. Only after years of brain changes do individuals experience noticeable symptoms, such as memory loss and language problems.

She illustrates many of her points in the short story on Mrs. Claus and makes an appeal for the public to help those suffering from the disease.

As a former Edmond north English teacher and counselor specializing in the field of child and adolescent development.

Katherine Webster wrote her first article in the sixth grade for the school newspaper. Her articles on child development and parenting have been published in The Oklahoman. Webster graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Oklahoma State University and went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from UCO. She has been writing curriculum and teaching online for the past 10 years in Oklahoma high schools and colleges. She is finally writing her own stories and poetry. She is a member of the Oklahoma writers club and Creatives Quills. Katherine lives in Edmond with her dog Macie.

A gold rush for UCO trained para athletes University of Central Oklahomatrained resident athlete Jeremy Campbell and the U.S. women’s sitting volleyball team brought home medals for Team USA at their respective championship events in November.

Three-time gold medalist discus thrower Campbell, a junior strategic communications major from Perryton, Texas, took home gold in the men’s discus F64 class at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championship in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Campbell threw 61.04 and will prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

The U.S. women’s sitting volleyball team won gold at the World ParaVolley Super 6 in Tokyo as they defeated Russia in three sets and remained undefeated with a perfect 7-0 record.

Additionally, the U.S. women’s sitting volleyball team finished the 2019 season with an impressive 25-0 record.

The U.S. had already qualified for Tokyo 2020 by finishing second at the 2018 World ParaVolley World Championships. UCO students Jillian Williams, a senior marketing major from Odem, Texas, is team USA’s middle/opposite; and, Heather Erickson, a senior general studies major from Fayetteville, North Carolina, is team USA’s opposite.

“We continue to be thrilled with the progress of our UCO students as they compete at the highest levels of competition in preparation for the 2020 Summer Paralympics,” said Katrina Shaklee, assistant vice president for the UCO Wellness Center, which includes the university’s Paralympic and Olympic programs.

“UCO plans to celebrate these athletes throughout 2020 leading up to the biggest stage at the Tokyo Paralympic Games in August.”

Central is the host training site for Men’s and Women’s Sitting Volleyball and USA Taekwondo. Currently, Central hosts athletes in the Paralympic sports of sitting volleyball, field and taekwondo.

Salvation Army honors Lankford for opioid fight U.S. Senator James Lankford (R-Edmond) last week was awarded the “Fight for Good” award by the Salvation Army for his dedicated work in fighting the opioid crisis.

“As a community, we should all fight for what is good for our families and neighbors. Drug addiction has torn apart our families and individual lives. We should work until no family feels the pain of addiction,” said Lankford. “I will continue to support effective policies and stand up for families who have been tragically affected by the drug abuse crisis that has consumed our state.”

Lankford remains actively engaged in the national conversation that continues to impact Oklahoma and the nation. In 2017, following the White House’s declaration of a national emergency for the opioid crisis, the Senate approved an additional $3.7 billion for cracking down on opioid abuse. Lankford also appeared in a documentary called Killing Pain focused on the impact of the opioid crisis in Oklahoma. In 2018, Lankford supported the passage of H.R. 6, the Opioid Crisis Response Act. In a Senate Finance Committee hearing on April 11, Lankford questioned the Director of the National Institutes of Health about the timeline for non-addictive opioid alternatives to get to market for patients with chronic pain. In June, the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) Director Carroll traveled to Oklahoma to hear first-hand about our state’s work to interdict illegal drugs and help families walk through drug addiction. In August, Lankford also applauded Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter’s work to hold pharmaceutical companies responsible for their role in the opioid crisis in Oklahoma. In November, Lankford appeared in Facebook and Instagram public service ads across Oklahoma warning of the dangers of opioids and encouraging those who suffer from substance use disorders to seek treatment. Jewell story comes to big screen

By George Gust It’s an unprecedented achievement that director Clint Eastwood, 89, is still hard at work making a movie a year, and even more unprecedented that his films are still engaging. After a couple of his less than stellar outings in "The Mule" and "The 15:17 to Paris" many may have started to believe Eastwood had lost his fastball.

However, "Richard Jewell" seems to be a reinvigoration for Eastwood's directorial prowess, with a compelling portrait of an unlikely public figure troubled by a firestorm of public perception and a misguided investigation.

The world is first introduced to “Richard Jewell” (Paul Walter Hauser) as the security guard who reported finding the device at the 1996 Atlanta bombing. His report quickly making him a hero whose swift actions save countless lives. But within days, the Jewell becomes the FBI's number one suspect, vilified by press and public alike. Reaching out to an old attorney acquaintance, Watson Bryant (Sam Rockwell), Jewell staunchly professes his innocence.

"Richard Jewell" rides the strength of strong performances from Rockwell, Hauser, and Kathy Bates as Jewell's mother to overcome reductive writing of the antagonists of the film. Eastwood approaches "Richard Jewell" with a clear vision of what kind of story he wanted to tell, which both helps and hurts the overall experience of the film. Eastwood makes a strong case for empathizing with the everyman security guard, however the over-the-top way the FBI and journalists are portrayed as pursuing Jewell with malice rang false. And even though it seemed that the antagonistic nature of the forces outside Jewell were less than true to life, it helped create the snake bitten feeling Jewell must have been feeling being vilified by the media and FBI after helping protect hundreds of people from a terrorist attack.

Many performances could be placed into an 'everyman' category, but most come off as a movie star dressed down, but Hauser as Jewell in this film feels as authentic as it gets. Hauser's performance is incredible in its ability to be emotional and empathetic with very little big emotional moments. He plays the unfulfilled wannabe lawman as naive and overly trusting of authority in a way that feels genuine and relatable, and has you rooting for him throughout the film even though there are real elements of his life that would lead an investigation to his doorstep. And in support of Hauser is a fun per-

LifeShare part of Rose Parade Jan. 1 LifeShare of Oklahoma is honoring Jhett Skaggs, of Lexington, Okla., as a float rider in the 2020 Tournament of Roses Parade on Jan. 1.

LifeShare is the organ procurement organization in Oklahoma responsible for the recovery of organs and tissue for transplant purposes.

Every year, LifeShare

helps sponsor the Donate Life Float in the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day to spread the message about organ, eye and tissue donation. As a sponsor, LifeShare is able to send one recipient to ride the float and one donor portrait to be honored on the float.

When Jhett, was just a few months old, his parents noticed he had difficulty nursing, crawling and would suddenly stop breathing. He was diagnosed with a rare heart condition, and the Skaggs family was told that if he were to survive, he would need a new heart. They relocated to a children’s transplant hospital, and the doctors implanted him with a Berlin heart to keep him alive. Two weeks later, Jhett received his new heart at just ten months old.

He and his family made the trip to Hous-

ton multiple times a year for routine appointments to check the progress of his heart.

Everything seemed to be going great for about five years, until September 2012, when doctors noticed Jhett’s heart rate was alarmingly rapid. The doctor visit turned into an overnight stay which led to two weeks in the hospital. Doctors discovered that Jhett had transplant coronary artery disease and the only cure would be another transplant.

In November 2012, Jhett was listed for a second heart transplant.

He and his dad moved back near the children’s transplant hospital, hundreds of miles away from his mom and sister. While he was waiting for his second lifesaving transplant, he began taking golf lessons at a local course and got involved in the PGA junior league.

Since he was unable to attend school, this allowed him to be around other kids and have fun.

Being away from his mom, sister and friends, golf seemed to provide Jhett with some normalcy, and he even built a great relationship with college golf teams.

After four long years of waiting for a new heart, Jhett received a call that would save his life. He received his transplant in July 2018.

Three months later, he and his dad were finally able to move back home to Oklahoma with his mom and sister.

Jhett, now 12, is thankful for every day he is given. He still plays golf, and hopes to play on a professional level one day, and teach others how to play, too.

Jhett will be the youngest of 26 riders on this year’s Donate Life Float in the Rose Parade.

Slavonic marks 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs Greg Slavonic of Edmond visited Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, to speak personally with shipyard workers at an all-hands call and make public remarks at the USS Oklahoma Memorial on the anniversary of the World War II bombing.

Slavonic's visit is in the wake of the deaths of two Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility workers Dec. 5.

“The Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard proved its tremendous spirit and resilience in the second World War when it responded to the tragic bombing,” Slavonic said. “In a mighty and skillful effort, USS Oklahoma was righted and refloated. Sadly, tragedy is upon us again—and we are here to remember the fallen from the past and from the recent present.”

Slavonic is responsible for the overall supervision and oversight of manpower and reserve component affairs of the department of the Navy including the development of programs and policy related to active, reserve, retired military personnel, their family members, and the civilian workforce; the tracking of the contractor workforce, and, the oversight of human resources systems within the department.

With the recent deaths fresh in everyone’s mind, Secretary Slavonic addressed a crowd of USS Oklahoma family members, World War II veterans and others, speaking on how the heroes of Pearl Harbor, both past and present, have always showed great resolve in the face of trials. “It’s hard to

imagine what that day was like,” he said, referring to the attack on Pearl Harbor, an event that thrust the United States into World War II. A retired U.S. Navy rear admiral and Oklahoma native, Slavonic enlisted as a signalman, eventually entered the Navy Reserve, and then retired after serving 34 years. He acknowledged the presence of another Sailor and World War II veteran in attendance at the ceremony: Signalman 2nd Class Burke Waldron. “I met a young man who is 96 years young and we have something in common,” Slavonic said, denoting their shared rating of signalman. “It was the bright spot of a difficult day.”

The memorial he stood before contains the names of those lost on the USS Oklahoma with each Sailor and Marine who perished represented by a marble pillar. Slavonic served on the committee that led the effort to build the memorial. He went on to describe how it is a visual representation of Sailors manning the rails, referring to how the erect marble pillars mirror sailors lining the deck of a ship to salute and render honors.

“The greatest generation is recognized by this memorial,” he said, gesturing to the pillars.

“The men and women today, in uniform and out,” he said in closing, “embody the proud heritage and fighting spirit of the crew of Oklahoma and those who were determined to make her stand upright again. Their legacy lives on, their story will not die.”

Two Edmond residents part of USAO graduating seniors On Dec. 7, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma’s fall 2019 commencement ceremony awarded 49 students with bachelor’s degrees.

Among those students were Amanda Gibson and Allison Oliver of Edmond. Gibson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, while Oliver earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music with a teacher education emphasis.

At the end of each semester, the university’s commencement ceremony celebrates the term’s graduates with an event filled with pageantry that also featured speeches from Oklahoma Academy of State Goals President Julie Knutson and USAO President John Feaver.

“Every semester, my heart fills with joy to see these students — now alumni — assembled before me,” said Feaver. “The students

who come to USAO are a special breed. They are young people dedicated to the distinct principles that set our institution apart from any other university in Oklahoma.

These bright, curious and exceptionally motivated students leave here well-equipped for the challenges facing them in the world today. I know this new generation of Drovers will have no trouble surmounting these challenges and that they will find success no matter where life leads them."

To begin commencement, the USAO Concert Band performed Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance March No.1,” a traditional processional. For the ceremony’s special music, music education major Allison Oliver performed “In My Dreams” from the musical Anatasia before Feaver’s address.

Group seeks prevention of falls for people over 65 According to the National Council on Aging, falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for people 65 and older. GlobalHealth, an Oklahoma-based health insurance provider, is sharing information to educate Oklahoma seniors on the importance of scheduling an annual fall risk assessment, as well as taking steps to reduce the risk of falling, which can potentially lead to severe injuries.

“Fall prevention is important for seniors to stay safe and healthy because, as you get older, health and physical changes make falls more likely,” said Dr. Wesley Williams, medical director at GlobalHealth. “While falls can result in hip fractures, broken bones and head injuries, the majority of falls are preventable. That is why it is important to speak with your primary care physician (PCP) about tailoring a plan specific to your situation to help you lower the risk of falling.”

GlobalHealth is providing information to help prevent injuries caused by falls.

Causes of falls. As you get older, age-related changes can impair the systems in your body that are involved in maintaining balance and stability.

Other factors can also increase your risk of falling, such as walking on a slippery surface, hurrying to answer the phone or moving around in a new home. Some medications may also affect your thinking or make you tired, which may increase your risk of falling.

It is important to discuss side effects of medications with your PCP, as well as any falls you have had in the past.

Prevention. Staying active helps you lower your risk of falling. Simple activities and exercises, such as walking or tai chi, can improve your strength, balance, coordination and flexibility. You should also wear sensible shoes and avoid shoes with slick heels or walking in slippery socks. Wear properly fitting, sturdy shoes with non-skid soles and skid-resistant socks when you are walking around without shoes. It is also important to get your eyes checked and ensure your prescription is up to date.

Wear glasses as advised by your PCP. Your home may be filled with falling hazards, from electrical cords to loose rugs. Make your home safer by removing items from walkways, repairing

Ask a friend or family member to do a walkthrough of your home to ensure it is clear of potential hazards. You should also keep your home brightly lit to help avoid tripping on objects that are hard to see. Always turn on lights before going up or down the stairs, place a lamp within reach of your bed and make clear paths to light switches.

Screenings. Through a fall risk assessment, your PCP can determine if you are at risk of falling. During your screening, your PCP will check for impaired mobility or gait, altered mental state, incontinence, medications associated with falls and a history of falls within the past year. It is recommended that those 65 and older schedule a fall risk assessment annually. This assessment can also be coordinated at the same time as your Medicare Annual Wellness Visit.

The students played the 36-hole tournament against college students from the other 17 PGA golf management programs nationwide.

During the second round we got as close as three shots from the lead and ultimately tied for second place – the highest finish in Central’s history,” said Lindsey Cook, director of Central’s PGA golf management program.

The PGA Jones Cup is a national tournament put on by the PGA of America. The tournament is named for S. Roland Jones, Ph.D., who was the first PGA golf management university program di-

Concern voiced on retirement savings

By Paula Burkes Oklahoman.com Only 27% of U.S. workers feel they’re on track or ahead of where they should be on saving for retirement.

In fact, 52% percent believe they’re behind, while one in five don’t know whether they're behind or not.

That’s according to a recent online survey of 2,697 adults by YouGov market research firm for New York-based Bankrate.com.

Shockingly, workers nearing retirement age, those 55 to 64, feel the least prepared. Meanwhile, a notable 38% of U.S. workers have never had retirement accounts. And of those with ac-

counts, 49% admit to having dipped into them to cover unemployment (33%), medical bills and other emergencies (26%), debt repayment (23%), home-buying costs (17%) and college expenses (12%).

Tapping retirement accounts to pay debt doesn’t surprise me — especially in Oklahoma.

According to separate recent analysis by CreditCards.com, our state has the sixth highest credit card debt burden nationally. Though we rank 18th in highest average credit card debt ($8,409), we have the eighth lowest median annual household income ($51,924). Regardless of the reasons behind them, early withdrawals from retirement accounts result in permanent setbacks, said Greg McBride, Bankrate chief financial analyst.

“In addition to the income taxes and 10% early withdrawal penalty you may be subjected to, the money comes out but doesn’t go back in," he said.

"You (until you’re 50) don’t get to make higher contributions in subsequent years to make up for what you took out early.”

Bankrate’s survey results underscore McBride’s warning. Of workers who took early withdrawals, only 31% say they‘re on course for retirement,

Credit union honors Shane Martin ‘Teacher of the Year’ Francis Tuttle Technology Center’s Shane Martin was recently named a Tinker Federal Credit Union Teacher of the Year. Martin is a science and math instructor in Francis Tuttle’s Computer Science Academy.

Martin, an Edmond resident and Oklahoma State University alumnus, said he looks for opportunities to integrate financial literacy into his lesson plan. Though most of his students go on to study computer science and work in tech fields, good money habits are something anyone can benefit from if they learn and apply them into every day life.

Martin was presented with a check for $2,000 and a Teacher of the Year trophy.

Tinker Federal Credit Union also presented a check for $1,000 to Francis Tuttle, which was accepted by Superintendent Dr. Michelle Keylon.

Feds review economy The Oklahoma City Branch of the Federal Reserve of Kansas City has released its latest issue of the quarterly publication the Oklahoma Economist.

Oklahoma’s economy grew solidly for the first half of 2019. In recent months, several broad economic indicators have shown weaker results, as a sizable downturn in the state’s important energy sector appears to be affecting economic growth in the state overall, according to Chad Wilkerson, branch executive, vice president and economist at the Oklahoma City Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

“The pace of Oklahoma’s nonfarm job growth has slowed steadily in 2019, and employment in the state now is up only slightly from a year ago,” he said.

Mortgage Matters

Try adding just a tad more on the payment

By Kenneth Wohl RCB Bank A mortgage is one of the most expensive and long-term commitments you will make in your life.

So how can you both save money and take years off your loan? It’s actually pretty simple. If you pay just a little extra on your mortgage each month or year, you will Wohl owe significantly less over the life of the loan.

Although most borrowers know their home is a valuable asset, they often don’t consider how much interest adds to their overall cost. Your mortgage is amortized, meaning you pay regular installments on principal and interest over the specified period of time. Every time you pay your mortgage, interest costs decrease and the principle increases.

If you pay nothing extra on the mortgage, the total amount you owe over the life of the loan will not change. However, pay a little extra and you can take years off your loan and save thousands of dollars in interest.

Let’s look at this closer. If you get a 30-year loan for $250,000 and it accrues 4% interest per year, you will end up paying $179,674 in interest over the life of the loan. This is a big number, but one you can reduce by budgeting some extra money for your mortgage.

Using the example I’ve just described, the monthly mortgage payment is $1193.54 per month. If you can make one extra mortgage payment per year, you can save OVER $28,800 in interest over the life of the loan! Make it a Christmas present and pay a little at a time or make one lump payment at the end of each year. Paying just a little extra on your mortgage is the gift that keeps giving.

The more knowledge you have about the mortgage process, available loan options and your individual qualifications, the more satisfying your homebuying experience will be.

Brad & Jen’s newlywed mansion goes on market for $44.5 market Few things are worth staying in an inconvenient marriage to hold on to, but in the case of a classic Beverly Hills mansion once owned by Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt, the breakup might have deserved a second thought.

The A-list couple owned the home from 2001 to 2006 and it is once again on the market priced at $44.5 million.

One of Southern California’s most romantic homes, the French Normandy Revival-style estate includes canyon views, dreamy hedged landscaping and lighted pool, meandering stoned courtyard and patios, multiple fireplaces including the bedroom, more fireplaces in the dining room and bar, outdoor living room and an outdoor bedroom over the tennis court. Annual Internal Revenue Service limits currently are $6,000 of earned income for individual retirement accounts (IRAs); $7,000 if you're 50 and older. Annual limits on employer-offered 401(k)s are $19,000; $25,000 if you're 50 or older.

If you work 30 years and contribute the maximum annual deductible every year to an IRA, it may not be enough for retirement, said Jim Denton, managing partner at Edmond-based Arledge

and Associates accounting firm.

"Your rate of return averages 5% per year and if you plan a 20-year retirement and spend more than $40,000 per year, inflation would likely occur and you would run out of money by the end of your 15th year,” Denton said.

McBride of Bankrate said getting your retirement savings on track begins by fully utilizing your taxadvantaged retirement savings options such as a workplace 401(k) and supplementing that with an IRA. “Aim to save at least 10% — and ideally 15% — of your income specifically for retirement,” he said.

Pork Council steps up to help food bank Earlier this month, the Oklahoma Pork Council donated $10,000 to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to support its Food for Kids Backpack Program. This brings the total of okPORK donations since this partnership began to more than $152,000. okPORK board members, staff and pig famers also volunteered in the USDA Protein Packaging Center.

This program provides chronically hungry children with backpacks filled with non-perishable, nutritious, shelf-stable food to sustain them over weekends and school holidays. This donation from okPORK will allow the Regional Food Bank to process and package more than 28,000 pork sticks. This program is based on successful collaborative relationships.

The Regional Food Bank works with multiple organizations to solicit and steward animal donations that are harvested for the sticks. Many of these animal donations come Oklahoma 4-H and FFA members.

“We are so proud of the youth in 4-H and FFA across Oklahoma who work hard on their show projects and then donate them at the end of the show season to help other kids who are food insecure,” said Nikki Snider, okPORK Director of Marketing and Communication. “So directing our yearly donation to the Food for Kids backpack program helps us show our appreciation to those kids and the Food Bank for their great work.”

Besides donating the $10,000 to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, more than 20 okPORK board members and Oklahoma pig farmers volunteered their time in the USDA protein packaging center to help measure and pack Canadian bacon to go to Oklahoma families in need. They sorted more than 2,080 pounds of meat, which would provide more than 1,730 meals for hungry Oklahomans.

“It was an honor to be able to assist the Oklahoma Pork Council by volunteering in the USDA Protein Packaging Center,” said Kynna Brooks, Human Resource Generalist at The Maschhoffs. “It means a lot for us as pig farmers to be able to produce the product and then volunteer and share it with our neighbors in Oklahoma.”
