The University of Central Oklahoma’s Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) therapeutic preschool held a come-and-go open house this week, at the President’s Annex, located on Central’s campus. The event is free and open to the public. Pictured, UCO College of Education and Professional Studies student. It’s official, school is back in session. That news affects everyone, even those without children attending classes. Motorists are reminded to continue to look out for school zone signs and blinking lights. Expect busier than normal traffic during the early morning and afternoon hours. This year there are other considerations to educa tion as well. Last week, state politicians reacted to the teacher shortage in many of Oklahoma’s districts. Mark McBride is the Oklahoma House Appropriations & Budget Subcommittee chairman. He’s proposing a $4,000 relocation bonus and an extra $5,000 retention bonus for teachers who stay in the Sooner State.McBride called the teacher shortage one of the “most pressing, immediate education challenges in Oklahoma.”Thefullarticle is on Page 17 of today’s issue. Icehouse Project Visit Edmond Executive Director, Jennifer Seaton, invited me to lunch last month to celebrate me kicking myself off her advisory board. I had been on for over a decade and one of my new missions is to get younger folks to take my place in organizations. The folks at Visit Edmond are great and Seaton does a terrific job, but I decided to fire myself. She wanted to meet downtown at the Icehouse Project which is on the west side of the railroad tracks from the Farmers Market area. The best way I can tell you to get there is to drive west on Second street just past Broadway, go under the railroad bridge and on your right, you will see a street named Santa Fe Road. It is not the big Santa Fe on the west boarder of Edmond but just a small road also called Santa Fe. You will see the complex on your right with a big parking lot. Here is a tip. That parking lot is a public lot so you can park there when you are coming to downtown events and walk from there. Do not cross the railroad tracks. Take the sidewalk that goes under the bridge to get to Broadway. There are two restaurants in the complex now with many more under construction including a fresh from the farm creamery store and a brewery. Up and running now are the Fried Taco Kitchen & Food Truck and Woodward Pizza. I think Seaton has appointed herself head of food research for Visit Edmond. Excellent choice because she is small and one of those people that can eat without putting on an ounce. Since I had not eaten at The Fried Taco it was our pick. This place was fantastic folks. Best taco I have ever had and over the years I have eaten more then my share of them. The shell is fried but full of flavor and no grease. I picked the old fashion ground beef, and it was great. Seaton had one of their empanadas and she loved it. Big menu and much of it naturally gluten free if that is an issue. Guacamole was fantastic and they even have a mango guacamole. Lots of choices of sauces as well. The Icehouse also houses Woodward Pizza which is a Detroit style of pizza. I had no idea what that meant other then it is really good. Detroit-style pizza is a rectangular pizza with a thick crust that is crispy and chewy. It is traditionally topped with tomato sauce and brick cheese that goes all the way to the edges. Never been to Detroit but I sure like their pizza. Pepperoni is what I like, and this was great. Nice folks that own it and run the place as well. The cool thing about the Icehouse is that in addition to inside seating, they have an amazing courtyard. The day we were there it was about a million degrees, so the courtyard was not in the mix. As the weather cools, you can take the whole family there and let the kids pick what they want. Having raised five kids, I can truly value the opportunity to let the kids make their own choice. Twisted Tree Baking Company
Chef Robert Black, who owns Café Evoke with wife Lori, is in partnership on the bakery with his sister Kassie. The name comes from a tree near their grandmother’s home and that has become a symbol of strength for them. The Blacks are promising old world style and having eaten my way though many bakeries in Europe I am looking forward to seeing how they do it. Running a bakery can be hard. They bake fresh everyday and when they run out, they are out for the day. It seems they are taking it slow to open which is smart. They want to get all the systems operating before they take pre-orders or start making sandwiches. For now, just hop in line early and enjoy the breads and sweets. I see the need for more will power on my part since it is less then a full city block from my office.
Farmers Grain Kitchen and Cellar
The old Farmer’s Grain building on First street just west of the railroad tracks is housing a new farm to table restaurant. Seatings and days are limited for now, but you can expect it to grow and be successful as well. The address is 102 W First Street. Chef Payne Mills is using a “pop up” method to get operations worked out and has his brother and father are in on the project as well. The family also owns Venue 102 next door. Right now, the events are on Friday and Saturday nights by reservation only. To make a reservation, go online to resy.com and search for Farmers Grain. We will be keeping track and let you know when they are ready and fully staffed to open at full speed. Smart folks for doing it this way. There you have it. Just come to downtown Edmond and try all the different places. I did not even scratch the surface so come see them for yourself. Many more are on the way. Please e-mail contest@edmondpaper.com with the correct location to be entered in the weekly drawing.Commissioned as a partnership between UCO, the City of Edmond and the Edmond Visual Arts Commission, “Four Seasons” was created by sculptor Kevin Box of New Mexico and was dedicated on the campus on March 24, 2011. We now have a full blown, for real bakery in downtown Edmond folks. It is called the Twisted Tree Baking Company and is located at 111 N. Broadway. They specialize in gourmet tradition baked goods including pastries and breads. From what I have seen, it is a bakery truly in the European style which is rare in this country and a blessing to have in Edmond.
Having worked in downtown Edmond for the last 26 years, there was a time that choices for lunch were on the lean side. In fact, it was one restaurant that a guy could walk to for lunch. It was good but the need for variety was growing. The good news is that the place that was the only choice is still here and going strong, Around the Corner. The place is as popular as ever and has seemed to continue to be despite the growing competition around it. More restaurants in an area brings more people to that same area and everybody wins. When you have a lunch appointment these days, folks want to come meet downtown because of the great choices. “What is new downtown where we can meet,” is what a lunch partner usually asks me. I thought it might be time for me to print some of the new places and some of my favorite ones as well that are now in full operation in downtown Edmond. I have to be careful. As many readers know about 8 years ago, I weighed in at 310 pounds. I was a big boy. After losing more than one hundred pounds it is important to continue to keep it off. I weigh less now than I did in high school, and I want to keep it that way. For example, there is Cities Ice Cream in the Railyard area and a place called Railyard Pies. I have been to each once and they are outstanding, but I have to limit the number of times I let myself go. You, however, should go as much as you can because they are both great. Here are some of what is new. It is not a complete list, so you really need to come walk around downtown Edmond and discover all it has to offer. Please visit the shops while you are down here as well. You can even stop in and say hello to your local newspaper publisher. My desk is right up front when you walk in the door and always will be.

The competition is fierce, but the cowboys do not take home much more than bumps and bragging rights. They participate with one goal: to support the Children’s Hospital Foundation (CHF). The OCA Ranch Rodeo has raised more than $585,500 for CHF since 1997.

Frail and elderly residents and clients are particularly vulnerable to adverse effects from heat exposure. It is a licensure requirement for long term care nursing facilities and for intermediate care facilities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to maintain inside temperatures not to exceed 80 degrees in the common areas or resident rooms. In addition, the comfort of the residents needs to be considered even when the room temperature has not reached 80 degrees Fahrenheit. When temperatures rise above 80 degrees, residents and clients at increased risk for heat injury should be identified, assessed, and nursing interventions be initiated to diminish the risk for adverse outcomes. If your air conditioning fails or is not cooling adequately, it is important to have the air conditioners repaired or replaced as soon as possible. Meantime, it is also important that you have a plan in place and to implement that plan to keep the residents comfortable and hydrated in accordance with their medical plans of care. It is recommended that all long-term care facilities monitor and record the daily temperature reading in each hall between 3:30 PM and 5:30 PM including the resident rooms at the end of the halls. You should use a reliable temperature measuring device and not solely rely on the room thermostat. When indoor temperatures rise to above 80 degrees, as a temporary short-term measure, the air conditioning should be supplemented with fans in the resident rooms and corridors of hallways to provide movement of air for the comfort of the residents. If there is any danger of fire resulting from overload of electrical circuits or to the safety of the residents using room and corridor fans, it will be necessary for the facility to remove residents to other, safer facilities. Indoor temperatures above 80 degrees need to be monitored every two hours and measured four or five feet from the floor. When the temperature of any distinct portion of the facility exceeds 85 degrees, residents in that portion of the facility must be removed to a complying portion of the facility or to other appropriate placement and this agency notified of the action. If resident(s) are negatively affected by the heat and require treatment, this is reportable to the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH). If you have a loved one in a Long-Term Care facility and have any questions regarding any concerns you may have, you can contact an Ombudsman to assist you. Areawide Aging Agency Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program advocates for the needs of residents in LTC facilities serving Canadian, Cleveland, Logan, and Oklahoma Counties. If asked to describe how they envision retirement, many professionals might reference travel, time spent with grandchildren and various recreational pursuits. Few, if any, would mention cognitive decline. However, cognitive decline poses a significant threat to aging men and women, especially during retirement. Researchers have long since recognized that certain cognitive abilities begin to decline with advanced age, even among elderly individuals who are healthy. However, despite that decline, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that dementias like Alzheimer's disease are not an inevitable part of aging. In fact, the CDC estimates that as many as 40 percent of dementia cases may be prevented or delayed. In addition, the CDC reports that it's not uncommon for routine memory, skills and knowledge to stabilize or even improve as the brain ages. That's good news for retirees who want to spend their post-work life pursuing their passions and hobbies. Individuals also can embrace some strategies to stay mentally sharp.
· Enroll in an adult education course. A 2014 study published in the journal JAMA Neurology examined the association between lifetime intellectual enrichment and cognitive decline in the older population. Metro News Service

Staying mentally sharp
· Make exercise part of your retirement routine. A lack of structure may seem enticing to individuals who have spent decades working. However, many retirees find that little structure loses it appeal quickly after calling it quits. When creating a new routine in retirement, include regular exercise. According to the Mayo Clinic, studies indicate that people who are physically active are less likely to experience a decline in their mental function. So daily exercise not only gives retirees something to do, but also benefits their brains.
· Consider delaying retirement. Even if early retirement is a dream, it might be better to work a little longer than you had planned. A 2021 study published in the journal SSMPopulation Health found that postponed retirement is beneficial to cognitive function for all genders, races/ethnicities, educational levels, and professional status. The study reported that individuals who waited until age 67 to retire experienced less cognitive decline than those who retired prior to turning 67.

Dear Chairman Peters: We write today regarding the need for the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee to conduct immediate oversight of the unprecedented recent actions by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). On Monday, August 8, the FBI searched Mar-aLago, the Palm Beach, Florida home of Donald Trump, former president and potential political opponent of the current sitting president. Although the search warrant is sealed, media reports have consistently tied this raid to alleged violations of the Presidential Records Act. Compliance with the Presidential Records Act is overseen by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), which is under jurisdiction of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Additional oversight measures will likely be necessary as details emerge.

Then there is Hunter Biden, the son of the president. The FBI has had his laptop computer for YEARS. People allege the younger Biden has been involved in influence pedaling and gun law violations. That may be only scratching the surface. The assistant director of the FBI’s cyber division was at a Congressional hearing recently and denied knowing anything about the laptop. Anymore the FBI is way too involved in politics.Thenthere was Hillary Clinton, who ex-FBI director James Comey at one time said had sensitive e-mails she shouldn’t have. Yet Comey made the determination there was “no intent” to do bad and Hillary wasn’t investigated. I don’t know how he made that determination. It’salltotally ridiculous. So when I hear the White House say that 87,000 new IRS agents won’t investigate common people, I’m not only skeptical but I just don’t believe them for one moment. To be fair, she isn’t the only one on the left saying that. Once a talking point is invented, it’s used by most of the liberal politicians and liberal network commentators. I really believe this regime, and its minions, know how ridiculous that sounds. And they don’t care.

Senator James Lankford (R-OK) today announced his plans to introduce the Security and Oversight of International Landholdings (SOIL) Act in order to provide oversight and transparency of purchases of US agricultural land that threaten national security. Lankford is continuing to respond to concerns from Oklahomans about the multiple recent purchases of Oklahoma agricultural land by foreign entities. “The state’s ‘legal’ marijuana trade has predictably attracted transnational criminal organizations to Oklahoma that are trafficking drugs and people. The transnational criminal organizations have partnered with Chinese-nationals to buy land and businesses throughout Oklahoma. This is a national security issue and a human rights issue. We need to know who is buying our land, how they are using it and if any criminal activity is occurring.” Following Lankford’s most recent trip to the border, he was briefed by the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics on the rise of drug trafficking and drug overdoses in Oklahoma. OBN supports Lankford’s SOIL“TheAct.Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics is extremely grateful to Senator Lankford for his continued support of our agency’s efforts to target and dismantle drug trafficking organizations operating inside Oklahoma’s medical marijuana program. This legislation includes critical elements essential for identifying domestic and international criminals who are fraudulently obtaining Oklahoma licenses to appear legitimate on the surface while trafficking their marijuana to black markets throughout the United States. My agency is committed to working closely with Oklahoma’s Congressional Delegation, as well as our federal law enforcement partners to combat these drug trafficking organizations that are attempting to gain a foothold in our state,” OBN Director DonnieTheBackgroundAnderson.SOILActdeters

Coolest state park? Alabaster Caverns
Edmond Life & Leisure • August 18, 2022 • Page 11
By Elaine Warner When I was a little kid growing up in Kansas City, no one had air conditioning. A big summer treat was going to the movies. Corrugated cardboard icicles trimmed the marquees with the message, “It’s cool inside!” Today almost every building is air conditioned and on hot days, we all just stay indoors. If you’re looking for a way to get outside and still stay cool, Oklahoma has a unique state park that fills the bill. Alabaster Caverns State Park may be hot on top, but step into the cave and enjoy not only the temperature, but a fascinating geologic feature. Millions of years ago, this part of Oklahoma was covered by a shallow ocean – the Permian Sea. During the 47 million years of the Permian Period, this sea rose and fell, creating layers of sediment. The earth was rocked with earthquakes and volcanoes and, eventually large chunks of the planet were thrust above the water’s surface. Drying created cracks in the rocks. Eventually, water seeped into the rocks and began washing out caverns beneath the ground. Water rushed through these underground spaces, carving out more and more passages. Caves formed in this manner are classified as solutional/erosional caves. Unlike more common limestone caves, Alabaster Caverns is formed in a hard form of gypsum – alabaster. Alabaster, gypsum and selenite are present in the cave. Both limestone caves and gypsum caves are created by water erosion. Chemicals in limestone caves create stalactites, stalagmites and other fantastic forms. Gypsum caves like Alabaster Caverns don’t have these features. Alabaster Caverns, one of the largest gypsum caves in the world, is the only gypsum cave in the United States open for public tours. There are actually several caves in the state park. The main cave is known as Alabaster Caverns. Other caves, not open for tours, but spelunkers can arrange visits, include Owl Cave, Bear Cave, Hoehandle Cave, Ice Stalactite Cave and Water Cave.Caves like Alabaster Caverns develop in six stages. The caves here are in the fourth stage – the rushing waters have receded leaving more dry areas and allowing more air in the cave. This is the mature stage. Stages five and six describe the deterioration and collapse of the cave. Actually some scientists believe that Cedar Canyon in the park is the result of a collapsed cave. There’s a beautiful overlook at one end of the parking lot where you can get a good view of the canyon. There are also hiking trails in the park, picnic tables, a playground, and tent and RV campsites. But the main reason to visit is to take a guided tour of the cave. I hadn’t visited the park for several years so I was surprised to board a tram rather than walking down to the entrance. The new entrance is actually the old exit. In 2018, movement in the earth brought down 2200 tons of rock blocking off the old entrance to the cave making it impossible to walk through the entire cavern. Instead, visitors walk about half way in and back. Unfortunately, some of the most unusual features are in the closed portion of the cave. This is where rare, black alabaster – found only in three places in the entire world – could be seen. Still, there’s plenty to see in the other portion of the cave. Features with names like George and Martha Washington’s Upside-down Bathtubs, Cathedral Dome and Keyhole Dome provide interest. And you’ll learn some history of the cave – once a hideout for outlaws. In the ‘60s, it was designated a fall-out shelter. And it even appeared in a small-budget film. This is an easy cave to tour. While visitors are cautioned that there are 330 stair steps in the cave, they are well-spaced and easy on the knees. Only the approximately 30 steps in and out are a bit challenging. They’re slightly irregular but there’s a sturdy handrail there and throughout the cavern. Be sure and wear good walking shoes – no flip-flops. The trail can be a bit bumpy and there are some slick wet spots. Temperature in the cave stays in the mid-50s. If you’re a bat fan, you may be disappointed. We only saw one lone bat. Winter, when they are hibernating, is the best time to see bats here. Entrance to the state park – and parking – are free. There is an admission charge for the guided tour. There is no charge for children under five but they do need a reservation. Fees for ages six to twelve are $5; 13 to 61, $10; seniors and active military, $8. Tours are given on the hour from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tours last about 45 minutes, about threefourths of a mile of walking. For those who are more adventuresome, wild caving is permitted in the other caves. Strict regulations require permits, a minimum number of spelunkers, and a fee. Overnight camping is permitted in Water Cave – also with a number of stipulations. Call the park for specifics – 580-6213381.The drive to Alabaster Caverns from Edmond is approximately 170 miles, about three and a half hours. For me, road trips of that length will definitely require a pit stop. So I was pleasantly surprised when I stopped at Gore’s Travel Plaza northwest of Seiling on US 270/OK 3. A combination filling station, Sonic, convenience store, bistro, and coffee stop, it also got high marks for clean bathrooms. It’s not Buc-ees, but it’s one of the nicest facilities I’ve visited (and, trust me, I visit a lot of facilities!)In short, if you’re looking for a fullday trip, a look at one of Oklahoma’s most interesting features, and escaping the heat, put Alabaster Caverns on your go-to list. It’s cool inside!
Park manager Derek Kelsey leads a group through Alabaster Caverns. Elaine A sturdy handrail keeps visitors safe while traversing the cave.

In recent years, many school districts have diversified their couråse offerings for high school students. In addition to core education classes in key subjects required of most high schoolers, students now have electives that may rival college course offerings as well as classes that set interested students on career paths after high school. Indeed, it’s not uncommon for high schoolers to enroll in classes in business administration, teacher/education or STEM. In addition to these newer class options, many high school stu dents have access to more advanced classes. Despite the prevalence of the Advanced Placement program, some students and their par ents may be largely unfamiliar with what the program entails. The College Board, which oversees the Advanced Placement Pro gram as well as the SAT, defines AP courses as “rigorous, col lege-level classes in a variety of subjects that give students the opportunity to earn college credit while in high school.” Students who enroll in AP classes are not guaranteed those credits, however. Rather, after taking the courses, they must then pass an AP exam in each subject for which they have taken an AP class and score at least a three out of five on that exam. That passing grade may enti tle them to earn college credits, although some schools have limits on which AP exams they will accept. The AP program began in the 1950s as a way to teach introduc tory level courses in high school. By taking such courses, students can experience the rigor of potential college classes and challenge themselves beyond standard and honor courses. AP classes were not initially widespread, and there were only 11 subjects in the pilot program. However, today there are nearly 40 AP courses available, though not every high school offers every course. Students eager to land coveted spots at top colleges and univer sities often take AP classes to provide that extra edge against the competition. Most academic advisors now recommend that stu dents take these types of courses, not only as a way to later save money by eliminating the need to pay for certain college classes, but also to set themselves apart from other students during the application process. Many colleges consider AP classes in their deci sions to award scholarships as well. The College Board reports that, as of 2019, about 2.8 million stu dents take AP exams every year. It’s quite common for high school ers to take multiple AP classes during their time in high school. It is possible to take an AP exam without having taken the coor dinating class prior, but it is strongly recommended that students take the corresponding class to prepare for the test. Students and their families can learn about the Advanced Place ment program by visiting https://ap.collegeboard.org/ or speaking with a high school guidance counselor.

7 study tips for high school students
4. Establish dedicated study spots. Students should locate places that work best for them as study and home work stations. Certain individuals may need the quiet of a library or a bookstore. Others may do best with the hum of conversation around them or in a group. There’s no right or wrong study spot. Maintaining consistency will help the mind associate a place with studying.
6. Rephrase material. Textbook language can be dry and unappealing. Students can try putting the material into their own words or rephrase passages to make them easier to remember and recall. Similarly, teaching or shar ing the material with another person also may improve retention.
7. Make a formula sheet. Depending on the subject, having a sheet with shortcuts, formulas or diagrams can put the material into smaller bursts of information that are easier to digest. Along this same vein, writing information down can help improve recall. These are a few study tips that high schoolers can utilize to improve their grades so they can be more successful in school.
Assessments such as quizzes and exams help educators recognize areas where students are excelling and where they might need a little extra help. In addition to tests in the classroom, high schoolers gener ally take standardized testing for state or provincial assessment pur poses,.Testing may come easier to some students than others, but having solid study techniques can improve students’ performance on a wide range of exams. In fact, research by Stanford scholars, whose data was published in Psychological Science, found that applying a strate gic approach to studying helped college students improve their exam scores by an average of one-third of a letter grade. The testing preparation resource PrepScholar says it is important to build and maintain strong study habits to help students avoid undue stress and last-minute cramming. The following are seven techniques that may help foster good study skills.
1. Find value in the lessons. Many students lament that what they learn in school just isn’t rele vant in daily life. That can make the subject matter feel less important and uninteresting. Finding value in what one is learning and seeing how it can be applied outside of the classroom may make a student more inclined to learn and retain information.
Edmond Life & Leisure • August 18, 2022 • Page 13
2. Avoid distractions. Study time is time to take a break from social media, video games and any other distractions that can pull a student away from study ing. Constantly checking notifications can interrupt thoughts and make it hard to learn the material.
5. Use grades as benchmarks and motivators. Blaming a teacher for a poor grade won’t get a student anywhere. Rather, grades should indicate how well one is learning the material, and in turn, the effectiveness of students’ studying habits. Students can tweak their habits if they find their grades are not where they want them to be.
Back to school High school & college Edition
3. Establish a study schedule. Develop a system and a schedule for studying. Students should establish a fixed habit of studying each day or week — whatever is best for him or her. Over time, studying will become routine.

As distracted driving continues to plague our roads and kill people every day, state laws that are broadly worded to prohibit drivers from holding a cell phone under any circumstance appear to be effective in reducing rear-end crashes, according to a new research paper published recently by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).IIHS researchers examined data from three states on rear-end crashes, which are strongly associated with distracted driving. Two states – Oregon and Washington – implemented laws broadly banning drivers from holding a cell phone or other electronic device while behind the wheel, including when the vehicle is stopped in traffic or at a red light. One state, California, enacted a prohibition on “holding and using” a cell phone but did not specify that it applies to temporary vehicle stops. Data from those three states were compared to Colorado and Idaho, which have texting bans but not broader cell phone restrictions. Of note, rearend injury crash rates dropped 11% in Washington and 9% in Oregon after their bans on holding a cell phone tookTheeffect.IIHS study reaffirms the importance of states enacting clear and strong distracted driving laws. A recent report from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) and General Motors examines how national distracted driving fatality statistics are underreported, urges changing the social norm to make distracted driving completely unacceptable and offers more than two dozen recommendations for State Highway Safety Offices and their partners. National safety experts will discuss the report findings during a general session at the GHSA 2022 Annual Meeting this September in Louisville.

Year to date sales are down 10.7% with 280 fewer sales through June in 2021, a record year. Average prices though were up for June. The big chances were active and pending contracts. Active listings rose from 474 listings to 740 — almost three times as much as we started the year with. But we started the year at an all time low. Since 2000 up to Covid we had not been below a 1,000 active listings, so we are still under where we have been in the past. Most of the homes are in the upper price ranges but all price ranges had increases with some sitting on market even in the lower price ranges. They are either asking too much price or the price is too much for the condition of thePendinghome. contracts are down 14 percent from May with 122 fewer and down 20 percent from last June with 188 fewer contracts than this time last year. Things are still moving, but asking what you want no matter the condition of the home, is over. In the past two years, Oklahoma has received $2.3 billion in federal pandemic relief funds through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER), of which 44.5% has been spent, according to the U.S. Department of Education. About $1.3 billion ESSER dollars remain unallocated at a time Oklahoma, like the rest of the country, is facing a teacher shortage, with districts statewide reporting several open teaching positions as the 2022-2023 school year begins. ESSER money is controlled by the State Department of Education and local districts, not the Legislature. The agency and districts have announced several initiatives ESSER money will fund, many of which do not address the teacher shortage. "As well-intentioned as those other initiatives may be, they won't matter much if the teacher shortage isn't aggressively reduced. Money in teachers' pockets will help the shortage immediately. I'm suggesting Oklahoma focus some of this enormous pile of federal education funds on the urgent need to address the teacher shortage. The pandemic contributed to the teacher shortage in Oklahoma and nationally, so these funds are appropriate for this purpose." Some Oklahoma school districts are already using the funds as McBride suggests, including Edmond Public Schools, which offered a $1,000 bonus to new teachers or existing teachers returning for the 2022-2023 schools year. "Some leadership and collaboration within the education system can help Oklahoma take an approach some districts are already using statewide," McBride said. "Relocation and retention bonuses are high-impact, aggressive moves that won't cost Oklahoma any state or local education dollars if Oklahoma uses the federal relief funds already at its Otherdisposal."states already offering bonuses

The House education budget chairman on last week suggested Oklahoma immediately offer teachers relocation and retention bonuses funded by a portion of more than a billion dollars of federal pandemic relief funding available to the public education system. House Appropriations & Budget Education Subcommittee Chairman Mark McBride, R-Moore, suggested the State Department of Education and local districts collaborate to offer $4,000 relocation bonuses for public school teachers who move to Oklahoma and $5,000 retention bonuses for existing teachers who stay here. "Teacher shortages are one of the most pressing, immediate education challenges in Oklahoma and across the country," McBride said. "Bonuses are a powerful tool to attract and retain teachers amid this national teacher shortage. Money talks, and there is a lot of school money available in Oklahoma right now. Let's use it to fill this shortage and get our school children more teachers."

McBride's 31-year-old daughter is a teacher who recently moved away from Oklahoma. "My daughter just left Oklahoma for a $4,000 relocation bonus to teach in Las Vegas. She taught public school here, but Oklahoma lost her to Nevada because of money," McBride said. "Bright, young teachers like her will keep moving if schools don't get these bonuses in place soon."The Clark County School District (CCSD) serving the Las Vegas area is offering $4,000 relocation bonuses to teachers from out of state or more than 100 miles away who agree to teach in the district for three years. The district is also offering $5,000 bonuses to existing teachers who stay for this school year. The bonuses are paid for with Nevada's federal ESSERUnderfunds.CCSD's program, which also included a base salary raise, the district hired 883 new teachers before the start of its school year, making a large dent in its teacher shortage and getting the district above 90% staffed, with additional efforts continuing.CCSD is the nation's fifth-largest school district, serving 320,000 students. Oklahoma has about 700,000 students in public schools statewide. "The district my daughter will teach for in Las Vegas nearly filled its entire shortage once it announced these bonuses. Their plan worked. Oklahoma needs to offer this before we lose out to the other states already following suit," McBride said. "Since Oklahoma has already done recent, historic teacher pay raises, adding these bonuses at this critical time keeps us competitive." McBride and other legislators passed several bills last year and in recent years seeking to address the shortage, including:

JoAnn Bullard and Ada Blankenship, Gamma Zeta members, volunteer at U R Special clothing distribution. And as a special treat, Bullard handmade all the necklaces and bracelets for the children. U R Special had a busy weekend as it handed out brand new clothing to over 500 children during its August distribution date. The nonprofit seeks to increase self-esteem for children in the area with over 125 local volunteers working to insure its success. UR Special’s Board wants to serve children and inspire them to serve others. The organization aims to help the children build positive self-esteem, healthy habits, and positive relationships. To do that, volunteers address children by name and distribute in a way that is encouraging and allows children to choose their own clothing and accessories.
