Letter FROM THE 2018 President Welcome to LibertyFest 2018
Edmond, Oklahoma’s Fourth of July celebration. The LibertyFest theme for 2018 is “Rockin’ Fourth of July” and we sincerely hope yours is a “rockin’ fourth.” The entire LibertyFest committee intends to promote the patriotic heritage and freedom of our community, state and country. It is the fervent desire of the committee to bring to the Edmond community events that will provide the “best fourth of July celebration ever.” It is no surprise to many that I can be told to “go fly a kite” and will never be insulted. I have one ready to fly now. The KiteFest has been my special interest and passion for all its’ 28 years. And now it is located at KiteFest Lane and north Santa Fe. My special invitation to all, old and young, is join us and we’ll fly a kite together. It behooves me to extend a special heart felt “thank you” to all the LibertyFest sponsors who make our 10 events possible with their generosity. They are all directly a part of the success of our patriotic, family oriented, activities. “Thank you” can never fully express my gratitude for all the hundreds of volunteers that make LibertyFest a successful celebration. There is no better group to be a part of. Finally, I want to extend a personal LibertyFest invitation to you, your family and friends. The LibertyFest committee and volunteers would be honored for you to join us and experience the patriotism, freedom and family fun we present to you and the Edmond community for 2018. Help us make this the best LibertyFest ever and enjoy. Rock On, Terry Officer LibertyFest President, 2018

Letter from UCO Pres. Welcome to LibertyFest!
What a wonderful reason for all of us to gather as a community to celebrate our nation’s proud beginnings and our enduring values. On our national day, we are reminded that the precious gift of freedom we embrace in America, the cherished rights enshrined in our founding documents over two centuries ago, can never be ignored or taken lightly. These original American values define us as a people and are the building blocks of our unprecedented rise to global greatness and responsibility. For 128 years the University of Central Oklahoma has been an integral part of Edmond, and was the first institution of higher education in our state. Much has transpired since 1890, and now we are in the early decades of the first true global century. This is a time of dramatic change when America is being challenged to maintain a leadership role in many ways, not the least of which is to renew its commitment to quality education as the foundation for continuing economic and civic prosperity. As America has done throughout its history, we will rise to the challenge. Determination is an honored dimension of the American spirit. We will think critically, work collaboratively and continue to provide the imagination, creativity and innovation that the world has come to expect of us. And, as the University of Central Oklahoma strives to build and sustain a culture of learning, leading and serving, from the heartland of this great country we will help prepare our citizens to flourish in this “new normal. We will do this together. Susanne and I and the UCO community sincerely wish you a safe and happy Fourth of July holiday with your family and friends.
Bravo, LibertyFest!

KITE FESTIVAL
West side of Mitch Park on N. Santa Fe and KiteFest Lane Sat. 9:30 A.M – 4:30 P.M. & after sundown a Lighted Night Flight (wind & weather permitting). Sunday 9:30 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.
SATURDAY, JUNE 30 & SUNDAY, JULY 1 The 2018 KiteFest will be located on the far west side of Mitch Park on KiteFest Lane. We will be flying between mile roads Covell and Coffee Creek on North Santa Fe. The Kite Festival will include many events for the experienced flyer as well as the novice. We will paint the EVENT CHAIR sky with hundreds of kites flown Terry Officer by anyone who wants to “go fly a kite.” So bring, make or buy a kite and fly it. There will be team demonstrations by experienced kiters. The two-line kites are flown in synchronized figures and patterns by three or more kiters. There will also be kiters flying four-lined kites in patterns never dreamed of by the kiters of yesteryear. The Kite Festival will include making kites for even the youngest kiter and a place to fly their new kite. Candy drops from a large kite will occur several times Saturday for the kids. Several Master Class kiters will demonstrate new kites and flying techniques. Some traction kiters will pull their buggies with kites. Everyone is welcome to bring their own kite. Small sled kites will be given to every child so each child can fly a kite. Other kites of various sizes, colors, etc. will be sold by our vendor, “Wings of the Wind Kites and Toys.” All are invited to come and fly a kite or just watch. Homemade kites are welcome. Donations are welcome to support KiteFest and the kite giveaway.
All of these festivities and many others will take place at Mitch Park on KiteFest Lane between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Saturday, June 30th and Sunday, July 1st. Saturday will include a silent auction for those interested in bidding on a kite or kite related objects. Donations for the auction would be appreciated. So clean out a closet or kite bag and help out KiteFest. After sundown the kiters will return and do a night-fly. (Saturday only – night fly – weather and wind permitting.) Lights will be placed on the two-lined kites and flown together in many patterns. Many have described this as an experience with UFO’s. This is a “must see” for those who have never witnessed a night kite fly and for those who have. Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. is dedicated to kite flying for anyone who wants to “go fly a kite” on KiteFest Lane. If there are any questions about this event contact Terry Officer at (405) 341-5477. All kite flying events are weather & wind permitting.
THIS YEAR’S KITEFEST IS DEDICATED TO RON VANDERBILT, A LONG TIME SUPPORTER OF ALL THINGS “KITE.” HE WILL BE MISSED BY ALL WHO KNEW AND FLEW WITH HIM.

Dr. Kent Kidwell
PARADE GRAND MARSHAL Dr. Kent Kidwell, a member of the music faculty at UCO since 1969, recently completed a one year appointment as the Interim Director for the School of Music. His teaching duties over the years have included director of university bands, music education, conducting, music theory, arranging, and he also served as the chairman of the music department for eight years. Since 1974, “Doc” (as his students call him) has helped the UCO jazz program grow to three 20-piece big bands, several jazz combos, a traditional “Dixieland” jazz band, and several applied courses in jazz theory, arranging, and improvisation. The UCO jazz groups have won numerous national and international honors. The UCO Dixieland bands have been national finalists five times, and were twice named “National Champion Collegiate Dixieland Band.” The UCO big bands have participated in
jazz festivals and competitions nationwide, including those at Notre Dame, Disneyworld, Wichita, and IAJE conventions in St. Louis, Atlanta, and Columbus. The UCO jazz bands have also participated in European concert tours on four different occasions over the years. Prior to UCO, Dr. Kidwell taught for five years in the public school system of Oklahoma. His professional playing experience includes three years as second trombonist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and he has been principal trombonist with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra for twenty years. His performance background dates back to his teen years when he played in his father’s dance band and led his own jazz groups in college. He continues to perform nationally as a symphonic, jazz, commercial, and solo trombonist. Dr. Kidwell is in constant demand as a clinician and adjudicator nationwide.

Letter FROM THE Mayor
Grand Marshal
Welcome to Edmond LibertyFest! The annual LibertyFest series of events are upon us once again. LibertyFest in Edmond, Oklahoma was selected as one of the top 10 places to be in America on July 4th by CNN & USA Today. It is over a week-long celebration of the birthday of this great nation and the heritage of our fine state. The theme this year is Rockin’ 4th of July. We are very proud of LibertyFest and what it says about the Edmond community and our patriotism. LibertyFest entertains an attendance of over 125,000 annually and is organized and produced by a group of over 500 volunteers. It hosts Oklahoma’s largest hometown 4th of July parade with over 100 entries. We apologize for the construction going on downtown. The parade route will remain along Broadway with the cooperation of the contractor and the public. The grand finale of LibertyFest will be the Fireworks and entertainment the evening of July 4th. The Fireworks display is the largest in the Oklahoma City metro area. Welcome to Edmond, and with this printed program of information, we hope you enjoy the events, our wonderful citizen volunteers and our great City. Happy 4th July!
