SLEEP EXPERTS
By Mallery Nagle
If you like to shop local, did you know that you could sleep local too?
Sleepworld, 611 W. Edmond Road, has been producing and selling mattresses and the accompanying sweet dreams in town for the last 67 years. “The majority of our products are made on-site,” said owner Shari Weeden. “We’re a factory and showroom in one location.” And as spring approaches, Sleepworld offers an array of new products to help you say hello to your old friend, The Sandman.
Weeden said traditional innerspring mattresses are the biggest sellers at Sleepworld, along with foam mattresses. The new twist on these traditional beds is latex materials. “Latex is more durable and long-lasting,” than older mattress materials she explained. “It sleeps cooler and allows for easier movement.”
She pointed out that innerspring mattresses still feature a pocketed coil of some sort, while the foam-based products offer a newer material called Serene, which has taken the place of other memory foam materials.
Also popular are adjustable beds that allow for parts of the mattress to be raised and lowered, letting the sleeper choose the perfect sleep position.
New this spring at Sleepworld is sheets. Weeden said microfiber sheets and a new fabric called Tencel are the most popular. Tencel, she pointed out, is the latest in cooling fabric technology. “There are a lot of cooling products, but this is used in the coolest products,” she said.
And along with sheets, come pillows. Although Sleepworld sells five or six types, the best sellers are the latex pillows and a side-sleeper pillow with a shoulder cut. The side-sleeper pillow features a cooling pad for a more comfortable night’s rest.
Underneath it all, Weeden suggests a mattress protector. She noted this is an inexpensive insurance policy to protect your investment in your mattress. She said the protectors resemble a fitted sheet and add no volume. They do, however, protect the mattress against moisture from spills or other mishaps.
Bed frames, rails, converter rails and headboards are also available for purchase.
In addition to mattresses, Sleepworld also produces custom throw pillows and cushions. “We make pillows in all shapes and sizes, and we can customize any type of cushion,” she said. She noted ready-made items such as window seat cushions and cushions for dining chairs can be difficult to find.
Outdoor furniture cushions are a big part of her business. “It’s starting to pick up,” she said in late January.
