ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY The success of the Children’s Party is due to the efforts of too many people to thank individually. The group effort was outstanding. Attendance by residents of IL has greatly increased over the past years. The number of residents that attended this year was wonderful to see and I’m sure made the employees and their kids feel warm inside to see such support. The background music by Pat O. added so much to the atmosphere. The servers did a fine job and cookie organizers Rosemary L. and Mary R. kept the trays filled. Thank you to everyone who donated cookies to the cause. Jul S. acted as Master of Ceremony once again this year. Mr. and Mrs. Claus and their helpers, Mickie and Ed D., entertained a steady stream of little visitors, a few of whom were not quite sure who the guy in the big red and white suit was. The ladies at the book table enjoyed their job of distributing books. The exact number of attendees is hard to determine, but we had 181 children registered. The clowns were busy painting faces and making balloon sculptures the entire time. Thanks to all of the residents who contributed toward the expenses of this party. It makes it all worthwhile! And, thanks for making my last year leading the party the best yet!! Nancie W. 5

Celebrating Wellness During the Holiday Season With the Christmas season upon us and the spirit of giving ever present, we should still take a moment to focus on our health. It is estimated that the average American may gain from 1 to 12 pounds during the holiday season. In addition, a number of factors, including unrealistic expectations, financial pressures, and too many commitments can cause stress and anxiety at holiday time. With a proper perspective of the holiday season, one can stay happy and healthy and avoid the “Holiday Blues.” Here are some useful tips: Physical and Mental Wellness

Prevention of illness is key! • • • • •

Schedule a check-up with your health care provider to ensure your health. Wash your hands! This is one of the most important steps to preventing illness and spreading germs! Cough or sneeze into your upper arm, if you don't have a tissue to cover your nose and mouth. In colder temperatures, stay dry and dress warmly in several layers. Stimulate you mental well-being by volunteering in activities, participating in group outings, maintaining family and friend contacts, reading, spiritual enrichment or take an educational course!

Avoiding Weight Gain and Staying Active during the Holidays

It is easy to let the holiday weight gain accumulate! • •

Start or keep up with your present exercise routine (if just starting, contact your physician and rehab team for an appropriate activity plan). Eat a balanced meal and watch the beverages you are drinking, which may be high in calories; don't skip meals prior to a holiday meal... instead, eat in moderation.

Celebrate Yourself during the Holidays Physical and mental well-being starts with accepting yourself! Any negative feelings? Make a list of things you could do to change those feelings and make yourself feel better. If you miss a day of exercise or happen to overeat a delicious meal... don't feel guilty! Enjoy the season!

Remember to contact us, if we can be of assistance! 405-767-9033 (9:00am – 4:30pm). Merry Christmas! From your Epworth at Home team!

‘Tis the season to go shopping! It seems we are getting a lot of packages for the holidays early this year and they can pile up quickly. If you receive a package, it would be most appreciated if you retrieve it as soon as you can. Thank you so much, Michele Miruski, Front Desk Receptionist 7

SUNDAY SCHOOL SUNDAY, DECEMBER 23RD BRILL CHAPEL 9:30 AM INTRODUCTION TO THE CHURCH

Luke 1-2 A church tradition from years past involved the happy fuss made over a baby's first Sunday in church. Usually a week or two after birth, the proud mothers and father would carefully pack up their new child (along with a diaper bag) and present their bundle of joy to the women who staffed the church nursery department. The child might even be enrolled in the “cradle roll,” with the parents receiving a certificate and a photograph to mark the event. Later, the minister might ask the new parents to bring their infant to the main worship service where he would announce to the church that a new little person was in their midst. The biggest fuss would come after the service, when the people of the church would surround the proud parents in the foyer to get a peek at the baby and congratulate the mom and dad. For various reasons, that practice of decades gone by will not be so easy for the year 2019 in many cases! Even so, this integration is important. While a baby may not be a “member” of the church in the sense of regularly attending in the church and as a faithfully giving adult, these little ones must find a welcome home among the people of God. They should not need to wait until their teenage or adult years to garner acceptance. This lesson points us to one who underwent a mixture: one who was to live his short life both accepted and rejected, in both infancy and adulthood. Come early to hear our own Fretta Moore bless us with her piano mastery of the Christmas hymns at 9:15am. Jim West will lead this lesson.

VESPERS THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20TH 3:30 PM BRILL CHAPEL Vespers speaker will be Rev. Sam Powers, Senior Pastor at First United Methodist Church, Edmond. Music by the Villa Voices: “Precious Child So Sweetly Sleeping”

VESPERS THURSDAY, DECEMBER 27TH 3:30 PM BRILL CHAPEL COMMUNION SERVICE Vespers speaker will be Rev. Dwight Magnus, Epworth Villa Associate Chaplain. 8
