Jeff Love casually attended LSU, Furman and North Texas for sports management and music and became a night club owner. Jeff sold out and began his comedy career at thirty seven years old as a beginner at open mic nights in comedy clubs throughout Dallas and Atlanta. Jeff said it was the worst five minutes of his life, three times a week. Jeff survived open mic night and began working as an opening act, that's the person who sleeps on the couch, in the living room, at the comedy condo and gets paid the least. Jeff was an opening act for five years. Jeff became a feature and eventually a headliner.

Before Jeff Love was a comedian, he worked as an Activities Director for an active senior community. When Love left his warm, fuzzy job, for his first comedy tour, the residents made him promise to do senior shows also. Now that Love is a senior citizen himself, he performs 200 senior dates a year. Since 1990, Jeff has performed a G-rated comedy show called “Laughter IS The Best Medicine”, written especially for an active retirement community. http://www.epworthvilla.org/events/ Click link for past issues of Epworth Villa Happenings

WOMEN’S COFFEE WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14th REDBUD ROOM COFFEE, 10:00 A.M., PROGRAM 10:30 A.M. MEN ARE INVITED TO ATTEND! “Hunger in the Schools” seems to be a surprising topic for our metro area. However, it is a real fact! Speaker Lisa Chastain has run the food pantry in Summit Middle School (just down the street from Epworth Villa) for 7 years. Believe it or not, Edmond does have a poverty problem and there are children going home from school hungry. Lisa explains, “We pack a bag each week for these kids to have food to get them through the weekend, so that they will be able to focus on academics on Monday instead of their hunger pangs. Last year, I started a food pantry at Santa Fe High School as about 100 of our kids who graduate out of middle school were being sent off to high school just as hungry but with no food help.” Lisa’s mission is to make sure these kids know the world does believe in them and that they won’t be hungry on her watch!

SUNDAY SCHOOL SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18th BRILL CHAPEL 9:30 AM FROM SCRIPTURE TO SONG
GENESIS 28:10-22
The Scripture text this week is from Genesis 28 which records Jacob's experience with God via a dream he had one night as he was departing from Canaan. The passage has prompted two well-known songs over the years. One is the African American slave spiritual “We are Climbing Jacob's Ladder.” The other is the hymn ”Nearer My God to Thee.” The latter is perhaps best known as the song the musicians on board the Titanic purportedly began to play as the ship plunged into the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean on that tragic April night in 1912. Much of the content of this hymn is based on the incident found in today's text. While the words and melody of this hymn are comforting to hear or sing, we must remember that Jacob's circumstances in Genesis 28 were very uncertain. He was on the run from his angry brother, Esau. Jacob's self-exile had him traveling to a place he had never been and moving beyond the territory of the promised land for the first time. When would he be able to return home? What did the future hold? Jacob came to realize that what he was leaving behind did not include the blessing and protection of God. God had his future well in hand. Burrel McNaught will teach this lesson and Pam Oster will bless us with her favorite hymns.

INQUIRING MINDS MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH WELLNESS CLASSROOM 7:14 PM THE STORY OF IRELAND Mona Mae Waymire, Moderator The series aims to explore Irish history using the historical facts and evidence while charting the origin and impact of the numerous myths that have been passed off as history in the past. Key to this approach is relating developments in Ireland to events and changes in Europe and the world at large as the centuries progress. Episode Three: The Age of Revolution Spanning the Ulster Plantation to the Act of Union, this is an era that sees Ireland take center stage in a much wider European conflict. This episode will also investigate Gaelic life and culture during the eighteenth century through poetry, music and the rise of a Roman Catholic middle class.
SOCIAL SECURITY SCAM ALERT!! A letter is being sent out from what looks like Social Security. It appears to be from the Social Security Administration, IT IS NOT!!. It contains a letter that says you have a telephone appointment with them and need to call. It gives your correct address, BUT WRONG SS NUMBER and WRONG PHONE NUMBER. When you call them, they try to get your information. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION. It appears to be legitimate, but it is a SCAM!! 7
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PROTECTING YOURSELF AGAINST SCAM CALLS!! What happens when a call comes in and you do not know if it is a scam or not. Here are a few ways for you to tell.
If a person calls you and says you have been specifically
chosen for what is being offered.
If they say you won big money in a foreign lottery, asking you for your trust in them.
Extra charges begin appearing on your credit card at the time of the offer and afterwards, or having great deals that do not seem realistic. When any of these things happen, ask the following questions:
First ask, who is calling?
Another question to ask is, if it is free why are they asking me to pay?
When asking me to pay why is the caller in such a big hurry to do it right then? Some tips after thinking those questions:
Search online for the company that they are a part of to see if it is a real company.
Talk to someone and see if they think it is a scam also.
If you think they are trying to scam you they may likely be so spotting them is key.
Be skeptical if there is a free trial.
Do not pay them right then and there. For more information you can go to consumer.ftc.gov. If you spot a scammer go to ftc.gov/complaint or call 1-877-382-4375

PAUL GERNI KANSAS CITY BASED BARITONE JAZZ VOCALIST TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27TH 2:30 PM GRAND BALLROOM Getting his singing start at age 6 with his brothers/sisters singing group in Logansport, Indiana, Paul now sings “The Great Songs of the Great Singers” featuring a pleasing mix of top songs and standards made popular by the likes of the greats like Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Mel Torme, Bobby Darin, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Mercer, Diana Krall, Harry Connick, Michael Buble, Peggy Lee, Joe Williams, Louis Armstrong, Billy Eckstine, and more. These days Paul performs with his buttery resonant bass-baritone voice mostly in Kansas City, but also for appreciative audiences in Omaha, Fort Worth, Tulsa, Chicago, Denver, Stockholm, New York, and in Las Vegas. [Perfect for jazz clubs, conferences, corporate events, festivals, fundraisers, company parties, special events, weddings, senior living centers, country clubs, and restaurant brunches.] Paul has sung songs in English, German and in Italian, and has happily worked with great and soon-to-be-great jazz musicians, in trios, quartets, and with 18-piece big bands. “A great and growing experience!” he readily admits with a smile. Jazz aficionados in Kansas City have likely heard his smooth classy style at Californo's in Westport, The Blue Room at the American Jazz Museum, The Phoenix Jazz Club, The Green Lady Jazz Lounge, The Majestic Steakhouse, Piropo's Restaurant, The Kansas City Club, The Camelot Ballroom, The Broadway Jazz Club, and The Chaz at the Raphael Hotel, to name just a few of the 40+ great jazz venues in KC, home of the famous Kansas City jazz sound. Paul's repertoire is over 500 songs, with 60 charts for traveling. And with Gerni, his friendly personality is, of course a winning asset.

OKLAHOMA SPORTS HALL OF FAME & JIM THORP MUSEUM TOUR TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27TH LEAVE EPWORTH VILLA @ 10:00 AM The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage excellence through sports, academics, health and fitness; preserving our sports heritage while building pride in Oklahoma in the spirit of Jim Thorpe. Established in 1986, originally as the Jim Thorpe Association, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame’s main goal is to promote Oklahoma, while honoring and recognizing great Oklahomans who have represented the state positively at not only the state level, but also the national and international levels. In August of 2013, the two brands, which were literally the same organization with the same administration, same board of directors and same values, selected the name "Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame" as the cohesive umbrella brand of the organization going forward. Each year, we honor individuals by inducting them into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame. In addition to the Hall of Fame, we are nationally recognized for the Jim Thorpe Museum and annually awarding the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award to the top defensive back in college football. We are also home to the Warren Spahn Award, given annually to the best left handed pitcher in Major League Baseball. Throughout the last 30 years, we have been a leading advocate for promoting healthy lifestyles in the school children of Oklahoma. We are proud to give back to the community each year through our Bright Path Youth Program, including the state's largest drug free initiative, Red Ribbon Week. If you are interested in going with us to tour the museum, please sign up in the ‘Count Me In’ book BY MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26TH at Noon. Cost will be $6.00 for transportation, museum is free.

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) takes command of the MV Maersk Alabama, an unarmed container ship from the Port of Salalah in Oman, with orders to sail through the Gulf of Aden to Mombasa, Kenya. Wary of pirate activity off the coast of the Horn of Africa, he and First Officer Shane Murphy (Michael Chernus) order strict security precautions on the vessel and carry out practice drills. During a drill, the vessel is chased by Somali pirates in two skiffs, and Phillips calls for help. Knowing that the pirates are listening to radio traffic, he pretends to call a warship, requesting immediate air support. One skiff turns around in response, and the other – manned by four heavily armed pirates led by Abduwali Muse (Barkhad Abdi) – loses engine power trying to steer through the Maersk Alabama's wake. 16
