SUNDAY SCHOOL SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28th BRILL CHAPEL 9:30 AM October 28, 2018 Genesis 24:12-21, 61-67
PUTTING OUT A FLEECE
When facing an important decision, sometimes we may ask God for a sign to help us decide what to do. Based on a famous story involving Gideon in Judges 6, such requests are often referred to as “putting out a fleece.” Gideon's story has been taken as evidence that God will grant signs to those who ask for them. While it is essential that we are open to God's leading and while the Bible does record instances of individuals asking God for signs and receiving them, it is important to note the context of these biblical accounts. In each case the requested signs related to something God had already commanded or promised would happen. In the story of the fleece, for example, God had already called Gideon to save the Israelites from oppression and had given specific instructions on what to do (Judges 6:1-16, 33-35). These instructions did not involve Gideon's personal well-being, but rather pertained to God's larger plan for the redemption of his people. Gideon was requesting tangible signs to prove he had not merely imagined that God had spoken to him. We also note what Jesus had to say about seeking signs in Matthew 12:39; Luke 11:29. The story this week illustrates some principles in a context that frequently drives Christians to ask God for a sign for choosing a spouse. God had decided to preserve a chosen people by making a covenant with Abraham and his descendants. With stakes so high, it would be critical for God to be involved in the process. Come early to hear our own Fretta Moore bless us with her piano mastery of the hymns at 9:15am. Jim West will lead this lesson.

HOLIDAY GIFT CAMPAIGN IS UNDERWAY 100% participation! That is our goal for the Holiday Gift Fund. "Why?" you may ask. We want each individual who receives their holiday gift to know that it came from ALL of us. We don't want them wondering if there was someone who was displeased or worse, worrying that there are some residents who simply are not grateful for our staff. We understand that there may be many reasons NOT to participate. Some may feel that the suggested per month donation is too much or even beyond their financial ability. If that is the case, ANY contribution is welcome even a buck--or five or ten. We want our employees to know they are appreciated by 100% of the residents. If your reason for not participating is not financial and you would like to speak to me, I would welcome a conversation regarding this issue. You may call me at 623-3759. In the meantime, if you have a story about an employee who went above and beyond or if there is an employee you would like to see highlighted, let me know. We have just over a month to reach our goal of $75,000 and 100% participation. Jump on the bandwagon NOW! Jimette M., Chair, Holiday Gift Committee ‘Tis the season to go shopping! It seems we are getting a lot of packages for the holidays early this year and they can pile up quickly. If you receive a package, it would be most appreciated if you retrieve it as soon as you can.’ Thank you so much, Michele Miruski, Front Desk Receptionist 7

WOMEN’S COFFEE WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14th REDBUD ROOM COFFEE, 10:00 A.M., PROGRAM 10:30 A.M. MEN ARE INVITED TO ATTEND! “Hunger in the Schools” seems to be a surprising topic for our metro area. However, it is a real fact! Speaker Lisa Chastain has run the food pantry in Summit Middle School (just down the street from Epworth Villa) for 7 years. Believe it or not, Edmond does have a poverty problem and there are children going home from school hungry. Lisa explains, “We pack a bag each week for these kids to have food to get them through the weekend, so that they will be able to focus on academics on Monday instead of their hunger pangs. Last year, I started a food pantry at Santa Fe High School as about 100 of our kids who graduate out of middle school were being sent off to high school just as hungry but with no food help.” Lisa’s mission is to make sure these kids know the world does believe in them and that they won’t be hungry on her watch! Starting this week and going through the morning of our coffee on November 14th, we will be collecting items for Lisa and her food pantries. Please see the next page for the items that they can use for the backpacks. If you would like to contribute, there will be a box located in the area across from the Redbud for you to put items in. Items collected will also help out over the Thanksgiving holiday break when kids are home for several days. 17
