SUNDAY SCHOOL SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4th BRILL CHAPEL 9:30 AM SIBLINGS' RIVALRY
Genesis 25:19-34 Lucy and Jacob
The classic Peanuts comic strip often featured a theme centered around a promise that Charlie Brown's nemesis, Lucy, makes to hold a football on the ground so he can kick it. Charlie is wary; he knows that Lucy will pull the ball away. Lucy pleads for another chance, claiming that she has changed. She gives Charlie her “bonded word” that she will not pull the ball away. So Charlie backs up, runs toward the ball and (of course) Lucy yanks it away. Charlie is seen flipping into the air with his predictable exclamation of “Aaugh!” Then he lands on his back with a wump! Lucy's clever, deceptive behavior is similar to that of Jacob, the focus of our next four lessons. In this week's Scripture passage we see him taking advantage of his brother Esau's hunger in order to pull away from him something much more significant than a football: the family's birthright. But this was no cartoon; it was a series of events with tragic consequences for Jacob and his family. Come early to hear our own Fretta Moore bless us with her piano mastery of the hymns at 9:15am. Tracy Wilson will lead this lesson.

INQUIRING MINDS MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5TH WELLNESS CLASSROOM 7:14 PM THE STORY OF IRELAND Mona Mae Waymire, Moderator The series aims to explore Irish history using the historical facts and evidence while charting the origin and impact of the numerous myths that have been passed off as history in the past. Key to this approach is relating developments in Ireland to events and changes in Europe and the world at large as the centuries progress.
Episode One: The Age of Invasion Areas discussed in the opening episode include the impact of early Christianity and monasticism in Ireland; the birth of Ireland's potent literary culture; the unique law tracts created by Irish lawyers that afford us remarkable insights into the day-to-day lives and habits of ordinary people nearly 1500 years ago.
HOLIDAY GIFT CAMPAIGN IS UNDERWAY Good news! As of last Wednesday, only 72 Independent Living residents had not yet contributed to the Holiday Gift Fund. I am encouraged that when they do, we will reach our $75,000/100% participation goal. In the meantime, here are profiles on four employees who will receive the Holiday Gift. We would be in a trashy mess if it were not for TOM who makes the rounds not once, but twice each day to Independent Living, cottages, Assisted Living, and the Households. As soon as the morning rounds are done, we have generated enough trash to merit an afternoon run. Tom has been with Epworth for ten years and is a valued employee. His supervisor, Gerard, was very positive about Tom and his work ethic. When he is not working, Tom enjoys traveling with his brother and sister and their families. Kaylynn has worked in housekeeping for exactly a year. Before moving to OKC, she lived in Wichita KS helping care for her grandparents. She shares an apartment with her mom and likes to garden. She especially enjoys her Christmas cactus. She graduated from Heights High School in Wichita. Among her favorite things to do in her free time is watch Game of Thrones. She enjoys working here because she finds Epworth a welcoming and friendly environment. Two new faces in the food service area are Julie and Brandi. They have been servers with us for just a month. Julie lives near here and that proximity and the part time hours were what initially attracted this young mother of three to Epworth. She is trained as a dental hygienist and also is a publisher. She is a pleasant addition to our staff. Brandi graduated from Putnam North High School. She likes to read and has a long term goal to become a registered nurse. She enjoys working with the residents here and enjoys hearing our stories. I'm sure each of these employees as well as all the others will appreciate our tangible gift of gratitude through the Holiday Gift. Jimette M, Chair, Holiday Gift Committee 11

WOMEN’S COFFEE WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14th REDBUD ROOM COFFEE, 10:00 A.M., PROGRAM 10:30 A.M. MEN ARE INVITED TO ATTEND! “Hunger in the Schools” seems to be a surprising topic for our metro area. However, it is a real fact! Speaker Lisa Chastain has run the food pantry in Summit Middle School (just down the street from Epworth Villa) for 7 years. Believe it or not, Edmond does have a poverty problem and there are children going home from school hungry. Lisa explains, “We pack a bag each week for these kids to have food to get them through the weekend, so that they will be able to focus on academics on Monday instead of their hunger pangs. Last year, I started a food pantry at Santa Fe High School as about 100 of our kids who graduate out of middle school were being sent off to high school just as hungry but with no food help.” Lisa’s mission is to make sure these kids know the world does believe in them and that they won’t be hungry on her watch!
From now until the morning of our coffee on November 14th, we will be collecting items for Lisa and her food pantries. Please see the next page for the items that they can use for the backpacks. If you would like to contribute, there will be a box located is the area across from the Redbud for you to put items in. Items collected will also help out over the Thanksgiving holiday break when kids are home for several days. 17
