HOLIDAY GIFT CAMPAIGN IS UNDERWAY
FAQ'S (FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS) ABOUT THE HOLIDAY GIFT FUND Why was the name changed from "gratuity?" The word "gratuity" has tax implications that holiday gift does not. Why use "holiday" rather than "Christmas"? "Holiday" is more reflective of the inclusive nature of both our residents and staff. What is the purpose of this fund? Even though a State statute prohibits tipping employees of retirement communities, it does allow a one-time gift from all residents each year. This is our opportunity to give the staff a tangible token of our appreciation. What is the goal for this year's fund? $75,000 and 100% participation of Independent Living residents. How much should I give? That is an individual decision. The committee recommends a range of $25-$50 per month per resident. Who receives this gift? All employees of Epworth Villa EXCEPT upper management. Contract employees such as those in the Salon or agencies outside Epworth are also NOT included. How is the fund divided? 8% goes to salaried employees and 92% to hourly. How much do they receive? That depends on the number of eligible employees and the final amount collected. Last year, a full-time all year employee received $490. The amount is pro-rated for less time worked. Is my gift tax deductible? No Do residents in Assisted Living and the Households contribute? Yes. They or their estates are sent two letters requesting participation. How many employees and how many independent residents do we have? The number is fluid, but the answer to both questions is 200+. When is the gift given? During the Children's Party, Friday, December 14. Who hands out the cash filled envelopes? Residents who have been solicited from each floor of Independent Living. How can I give? Make a check out to "Resident Association" with "Holiday Gift" on the memo line and place it in Linda Lambert’s box #326.

SUNDAY SCHOOL SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH BRILL CHAPEL 9:30 AM Genesis 3:8-24
THE PERFECT MARRIAGE When we think of the Garden of Eden, we have visions of perfection. We imagine perfect weather. We think of friendly animals. We envision pristine water and air. Oh, to return to the garden, we think! Plenty of space. No crowds. Direct access to God. How could it be any better? Yet in Genesis the garden is both a place and a story, and the story has a rough ending. Any good story is the tension of a crisis that must be resolved, and Genesis is no exception. In chapter 3 we read of a series of deepening crises that end with Adam and Eve losing paradise. It is a drama that shakes the foundations of God's created order and changes the trajectory of human relationships with the Creator, a change we still cope with today. This story of the first couple and the first sins is archetypal, a pattern repeated many times in the Bible. First, an opportunity to violate God's commands (temptation) seems a good thing. Then the violation occurs (sin) with short-term pleasure. The consequences of breaking God's laws (punishment) that follow bring regret (repentance). But people don't seem to learn! Come early to hear our own Fretta Moore bless us with her piano mastery of the hymns at 9:15am. John Trent will lead this lesson.

MISS BROWN TO YOU FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5TH 7:00 PM GRAND BALLROOM Mary Reynolds and Louise Goldberg who make up the duo of Miss Brown To You like to perform folk ballads from the misty hills of Kentucky or a sophisticated jazz standard heard through a New York doorway. Steamy blues from New Orleans, circa 1920, a swinging two step at the dance hall, where Bob Wills is on the stand, a samba igniting the hills of Rio de Janeiro are colorful original songs. Miss Brown to You refuses to be confined to one style or one period. Instead they prefer to expand the horizon of every genre they play, even while upholding the traditions of the musicians that have inspired them in the past. The musicians that make up Miss Brown to You are capable of an eclectic abandon that few other bands attempt, and they are looking for an audience that appreciates a broad palate of musical colors. Mary Reynolds is a classically trained vocalist and instrumentalist, playing guitar or bass as required. Her compositions and interpretations were featured in the Fast Folk Musical Magazine when she lived in New York City in the early 80’s and are archived at the Smithsonian. While living in Austin, she was a frequent performer on the Austin scene and in October of 1996 was spotlighted in a solo “Live Set” on KUT radio. She is a frequent performer at the Woody Guthrie Festival in Okemah, Oklahoma. In her hometown of Oklahoma City, Mary has performed everywhere from the state penitentiary to the Governor’s Mansion. Mary’s solo recordings include patience (1998) and ohthree (“the Puppy album,” 2003). Louise Goldberg has appeared with a wide variety of performing groups and is comfortable in any style of music: reggae jazz, rock, and folk. She holds a Bachelors of Music from Boston University and a Masters of Music in piano performance from Oklahoma City University. She also sings, plays accordion and guitar. Louise hails from New York City and has made Oklahoma City her home since 1979. She has years of experience as a music director, notably for the Pollard Theatre of Guthrie, Oklahoma. Her many credits include smash productions of “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” “RENT” and “Passing Strange.” Louise’s first solo album, was released in 2003 and features her inspired interpretations of classic American songs along with her own original music. FAIR TRADE COFFEE, TEA AND CHOCOLATE SALE MONDAY, OCTOBER 8TH 11:00 AM—1:30 PM OUTSIDE OF THE BISTRO ‘COFFEE GUY’ PERKS UP ABOUT FAIR TRADE MISSION WORK There’s a ritual of sorts held every second Monday at Epworth Villa. That’s when Dave Ranek and his United Methodist Men sidekick Ron Osborn set up a long table to peddle Fair Trade coffees, teas, chocolate bars and other products to help send kids of incarcerated parents to camp, buy school supplies for needy neighborhood students, feed hungry families at holiday time, minister to the homeless and more. The duo’s years-long commitment has more than paid off. Of 6,015 interfaith organizations worldwide currently selling Fair Trade products, QSUMC ranks No. 18. To date, product sales have provided more than $22,000 for missions and projects. Sold through the European Fair Trade Association, whose U.S. Equal Exchange headquarters is in Boston, Fair Trade products come from small growers from under-developed countries worldwide. “It’s a win-win,” said Ranek, a retired 36-year statistician with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “We’re giving growers their dignity, not charity, for a high quality product, and helping better provide for the growers’ families, and health care and education in their communities, by paying them a fair price upon harvest and a premium for growing crops organically,” he said. Quail Springs United Methodist Men currently offers 19 types of regularly caffeinated coffee, including Columbian, Ethiopian, Congo, French roast, three flavored varieties and three decaffeinated coffees; six teas; two cocoa mixes; and nine milk/dark chocolate bars. Most coffees cost $8.50 to $11; teas are $4 per box; cocoas, $6.50; and chocolate bars; $3. “Margins vary greatly because we use the philosophy of pricing so more people can enjoy it, while supporting Fair Trade,” Ranek said. “We’re priced lower than Equal Exchange’s website on most items, and you don't pay shipping,” he said. Some of the proceeds go back to Africa and elsewhere. QSUMC provided mosquito nets in Africa and, for a Bolivian Methodist Church, put concrete floors in a hospital and supported salaries for nurses and pastors. A few years ago, the Equal Exchange contributed $1 of each Proud Mama Ugandan coffee sold toward buying brick ovens in Uganda. And currently, $1 of every bag of Congo whole bean sold benefits the Panzi Hospital Foundation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Said QSUMC Lead Pastor Kris Tate, "In every church I have been a part of, there has been a great desire to be as engaged in mission work outside of the walls of the church building. One of the struggles is having enough funds available to make the desired impact. Our Fair Trade Coffee sale has been a wonderful resource,” Tate said, “in supporting many ministries both in our local community and around the world. I am grateful for what they do.” Through his service, Dave has come to be known as the “The Coffee Guy.” 16
