NATURE’S PLAYGROUND Farewell doesn’t always mean farewell! As 2014 begins we’ll be saying farewell to two key members of the Corps of Engineers, but it won’t really be farewell. Corps Project Manager Arlyn Hendricks and Lead Ranger Jim Anderson may be retiring, but they won’t be leaving. The Kaw Lake Association and Kaw Lake Educational Foundation appreciate all they’ve done over their combined 75 years of service to the Corps and Oklahoma lakes, especially Kaw Lake. Jim has served Kaw for the past years and Arlyn the past 11 years. During that time Jim has served on the board of the Kaw Lake Association, including a term as president and Arlyn serves on the board of the Kaw Lake Educational Foundation. The bad news is they won’t be our contacts at the Corps office anymore. The good news is that they are leaving it in good hands and we will still have great folks whom Arlyn and Jim have led and let work with our two organizations. The other good news is that Arlyn and Jim plan to have more time to volunteer. Both have agreed to stay on as members of the boards of our two organizations and have indicated a willingness to devote even more time as volunteers. So to Arlyn and Jim…Congratulations on your retirement…and Thanks for all you’ve done and will continue to do for the Kaw Lake Association and Kaw Lake Educational Foundation.

SCENIC OVERLOOK

GROUNDBREAKING IN MAY, 2016 FOR THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY

ARCHITECT’S CONCEPT OF THE VISITORS INFORMATION & EDUCATION CENTER

A Dream Come True... a Vision for the Future!

O

ver 50 years ago Fred Fellows had a dream. A local civil engineer for Conoco he presented his dream in a speech to the Ponca City Rotary Club. What was his dream… a dam on the Arkansas River about nine miles east of Ponca City. About six weeks later the Kaw Dam and Reservoir Development Association was formed under the leadership of then Ponca City Chamber President Bill Robertson. With the help of Oklahoma political leaders in Washington D.C. including Sen. Robert S. Kerr, and many local volunteers, legislation authorizing the first construction funds took place eight years later in 1965. Ground was broken in 1966 and in 1976 the project

was officially dedicated. Fred Fellows vision was completed. Today the Kaw Lake Association and Kaw Lake Education Foundation members continue to dream. Our new vision is to construct a Visitor Information and Education Center at the Overlook area just west of Kaw Dam with groundbreaking 50 years after the original Kaw Lake groundbreaking and 40 years after the dedication. The Corps reports there are around two million visitor hours a year (number of hours visitors spent at the lake) at Kaw Lake and 26,000 cars cross the dam annually near the Kaw Lake Overlook area. Specifically for the Overlook there were 3,244

visitor hours at the Overlook in 2012. As we approach the 50th Anniversary of this ground-breaking in 2016 the Kaw Lake Educational Foundation has a great opportunity to enhance the area with a strategically located Visitor Information and Education Center to serve visitors to the area and preserve the history. The Kaw Lake Educational Foundation is in the process of requesting a long-term lease from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the Overlook area and an initial concept has been drawn by architect Rick Stuber for a Visitor Information and Education Center at this site. Plans are to break ground for this project in May 2016 on the 50th anniversary of the

original ground breaking. Pictures of this initial architectural concept accompany this article. Recruiting of volunteers to help with this vision and fund-raising for the project are beginning. If you’d like to be a part of this exciting project contact the Kaw Lake Association at 580-762-9494 or e-mail kawlake@cableone.net. This is an ambitious undertaking which we believe will greatly enhance the Kaw Lake and Northern Oklahoma area and we invite you to be a part. .

NOODLING

ATTENTION ALL NOODLERS!

SHIDLER HIGH SCHOOL FISHING TEAM Landon Roe (President) and Carson Cook (Vice Presdent)

Noodling on Kaw Lake RISK TAKERS… ADVENTURISTS… THRILL-SEEKERS... OR JUST PLAIN CRAZY

L

ots of words could be used to describe those who enjoy fishing with their hands. Known as hand-fishing or noodling, this sport has been around for years often passed down from generation to generation. The first noodlers were Native Americans and during the Depression it was a way to put food on the table. However recently it’s been growing in popularity due to recent television shows “Mudcats” and “Hillbilly Hand Fish” portions of which were actually shot at Kaw Lake in northern Oklahoma. Also the documentary “Okie Noodling,” has brought noodling to the surface as a sport in Oklahoma. Todd Roe, Shidler, is one of those you’ll find in the spring and early summer prowling the banks of Kaw Lake and area rivers and streams sticking his hands in holes looking for the biggest flathead he can find. That is the best time of the year, because this is when they are spawning in the holes, under rocks and in brush piles.

Success depends a lot upon the lake level, according to Todd. If it’s too low the holes are out of the water and there aren’t any fish and if too high they are hard to reach. Normal pool level is best. “The key to success for the noodler is scouting out the best holes and keeping them a secret,” he said, although he doesn’t think anyone has a secret hole on Kaw Lake. This is a sport anyone daring enough can do as there is little or no cost, just a desire to walk around the banks and stick your hands in holes hoping you’ll find a flathead and not a snake, snapping turtle or other critter. Todd said so far he has never been stung or bitten. You don’t need a boat or even a fishing rod and reel, just a good pair of hands and the courage to stick your hands in an unknown hole. The payoff for Todd has been flatheads as large as 50 to 55 pounds and he has seen some caught by others as large as 75 pounds.

Noodling is legal in Oklahoma, although not in all states. However, in Oklahoma it is illegal to use large hooks, just your hands. You can take a stringer and string them in holes and pull them out. But there is usually only one, maybe two in a hole. “Just like any sport there is a certain risk to it and you don’t want to do it by yourself,” he said. Many noodlers take a stick and poke it in the hole to get a feel of what’s there. If they determine it’s a flathead, the noodler dives in, often under water, and plunges an arm into the hold wiggling fingers to attract the fish. Yes…the noodler’s arm is the bait! The noodler then grabs the flathead by the gills and pulls it to the surface, sometimes with the help of another noodler. Some noodlers wear gloves and goggles to help them see better under water and to protect hands and arms. Others just go for it as testified by often bloody arms and hands.

Whether a first-time noodler…or one with lots of experience, the Shidler Fire Dept. Annual Noodling Tournament on Kaw Lake is a fun event. Scheduled for June 21, 2014, the third annual tournament is a fund-raiser for the Shidler Fire Department. First place winning team receives $1000 and the noodler with the largest catfish wins $250. Proceeds will be put towards the purchase of self-contained breathing apparatus for the volunteer fire department. Entry fee is $100 for a two-person team and $150 for a three-person team. For information contact Todd Roe at 918-691-4920 or e-mail firedad_3@hotmail.com. If you want to see what it’s all about, without the thrill of noodling, come by that evening to the Pioneer Cove Marina, watch the weigh in and enjoy dinner. The Pioneer Cove Marina is located just east of Kaw City, south of Hwy 11.

2013 NOODLING TOURNAMENT 1st Place, 122 lbs

As one noodler said “you lose all human instincts and you’ve got to go back for more.” What makes a person want to go noodling instead of fishing with a rod and reel? “It’s like an extreme sport, the adrenalin rush,” said Todd. “You don’t know what’s in the hole until you put your hand in there.”

FISHING

IT’S A RECORD! EDITORS NOTE: Steve Meyer caught a record striped bass hybrid last June at Kaw Lake. Not only is he proud of it, but so is his entire family. In fact, I imagine his sister Linda Meyer is the proudest. Linda couldn’t imagine anything better than having her brother’s record fish in the Kaw Lake magazine and giving a tribute also to her 83 year-old father, Bob who hasn’t let recent heart surgery keep him from the lake. Thus, a series of e-mails to the Kaw Lake Association office caught my interest and led to a meeting with Steve and Bob and this story. Steve is rather humble saying that he thinks his girlfriend actually caught one larger. Unfortunately at the time they didn’t think it was larger and didn’t get it officially recorded. So Steve’s 28 inch, 11 pound striped bass hybrid holds the Kaw Lake record. It was caught in the Sarge Creek area and he released it back for someone to catch again another day. Lifelong fishermen, Steve and his Dad, Bob, discovered Kaw Lake about three years ago. The Woodward natives bought a place at Kaw Lake and they often spend days at a time at the lake home fishing with shad or lures Steve makes. How did he catch a lake record fish? That’s his secret he says and nobody knows what it is. Steve says he has been fishing “since he could walk” and enjoys fishing at Kaw Lake for sand bass, hybrids and blue cats. Although Steve and Bob occasionally fish other Oklahoma lakes, Kaw has caught their attention and they’re spreading the word in western Oklahoma. In fact, a Woodward friend also has purchased a place at Kaw Lake and other Woodward friends have started fishing Kaw. Watch for Steve and Bob next time you’re fishing and maybe they’ll give you a few pointers!

Fishing on Kaw Lake

“I

’ve seen huge stringers of White Bass hauled up from below the dam here during the late season spawn. I’ve never been lucky enough to get in on that action, but it’s on my bucket list! “The crappie are moving into the coves with the warmer weather. The catfish are also on the move up the river with the rising lake level. They are being caught on cut shad along with worms in the flats. A lot of fish are being caught on jug lines as well north of Sarge Creek bridge and north of Washunga Bay bridge.” These are a couple of reports found on the internet from people fishing at Kaw Lake. People new to the area often go on-line to find out what others have to say about fishing at Kaw. “Kaw Lake is a good crappie and blue cat lake. Fish around the Washunga bridge and Sarge Creek bridge for crappie as there are a lot of brush piles.” Located in north central Oklahoma, approximately eight miles east of Ponca City on the Arkansas River, Kaw Lake is a Corps of Engineers lake that extends

northward into Kansas, ending near Arkansas City. The lake covers 17,000 surface acres and has 168 miles of shoreline at the normal elevation of 1010.00 feet above sea level. Kaw Lake and the Arkansas River have long been known for producing some of Oklahoma’s largest catfish. Kaw Lake also offers anglers excellent opportunities to catch crappie, sand (white) bass and walleye, according to the Corps of Engineers website. The Corps website reports that the fertile waters of the Arkansas River offer excellent habitat for channel, flathead and blue catfish, crappie, sand bass, walleye and striped bass/white bass hybrids. “The blue catfish fishing in Kaw Lake is some of the best,” said Lead Ranger Jim Anderson. The waters below Kaw Dam provide anglers many opportunities to pursue spoonbill fishing. A throwback from prehistoric days, the spoonbill or paddle fish grows to a huge size below Kaw Dam and is a real challenge. Kaw Lake is a great, but

8 | 2014 KAW LAKE: NATURE’S PLAYGROUND | www.kawlake.com

largely unknown, crappie fishing lake. No matter which type of angler you are you’ll have fun fishing for crappie at Kaw Lake. Look in brush, stumps or artificial runs, perhaps near docks and you are likely to find crappie. At dawn they are close to the surface, but as the sun begins to move higher in the sky they drop to five to ten feet deep, perhaps up to 25 feet deep at the height of the day and move back to shallower water towards dusk. From January or February to early May they follow a fairly predictable routine hanging around deep structures, submerged river channel edges, vertical bluff type structures and brush piles Fishing in Oklahoma requires an Oklahoma Fishing License (see chart for prices). They can be purchased on line at www.wildlifedepartment.com No matter the time of year, fishing opportunities are abundant at Kaw Lake. So grab your pole and bait and head out for a day in the great outdoors!

CRAPPIE FISHING TIPS Crappie can be caught by still fishing, casting, trolling or drifting.

2

What bait should you use?

According to “Crappie Fishing” www.crappie.com if the fish are eating it, keep using it. If the fish aren’t biting, try something different. For example, if minnows aren’t working try a spinner or jig.

When is the best time to catch crappie?

That, too, is a matter of opinion. Some anglers swear by winter crappie fishing. Others say fall and spring offer the hottest fishing. Crappie spawn in the spring when the water temperature reaches 52-60 degrees. Just before spawning they move into shallower water gathering in shoreline cover during this time. In the fall they feed aggressively to fatten up for winter. But remember crappie love structures, so look for rock piles, shallow coves, stumps, fallen trees and submerged brush.

What’s the best technique for crappie fishing?

If they are deep enough to tolerate a boat overhead, fish straight down over the side of the boat. Closer to shallow cover try casting and let the bait sink to the desired level with a slow swimming retrieve. When crappie are hard to find in open water try drifting or trolling with rods sticking out over the side of the boat in a method called “spider fishing.”

HUNTING

CALLING ALL DUCK HUNTERS!! DUCK HUNTERS From left to right, Chad Winslow, Dale Winslow and Mike Ramsey and Bella.

Hunting at Kaw Lake

W

inter in Nature’s Playground often turns to hunting. Many put away their fishing poles and bring out the bows and rifles in search of deer and duck, primarily. The Kaw Lake area has been well-known for years for deer hunting, but is rapidly growing as a favorite place for duck hunting thanks to a millet seeding program begun several years ago jointly between the Oklahoma Wildlife Department and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Japanese Millet, a warm season annual grass that tolerates wet soil conditions, is sown over 2,100 acres of mud flats at the lake via a spray plane in late July or early August. It yields a high-quality seed that attracts an array of waterfowl, which in turn attracts hunters from across the nation. Former, now retired, ODWC Biologist Ron Folks began the millet seeding at Kaw because it is a perfect location for the program. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which manages the lake, can draw down the water level, exposing the mud flats for the seeding, and then raise it incrementally

after the millet matures at a height of three to five feet. Of course, Mother Nature plays a part, too. Weather conditions can also influence the plan. Tens-of-thousands of ducks flock to the lake most winters, and the hunters have followed them there. It’s been reported that hunters from as far away as South Carolina come, often staying for weeks in neighboring communities. According to the Wildlife Department and Corps of Engineers you can hunt on specifically designated land around Kaw Lake. For a hunting map of the area go online toTulsa District Corps of Engineers. For details and hunting restrictions go to www.swt.usace.army.mil/ Hunting at Kaw Lake is in accordance with applicable Federal and state fish and wildlife regulations. Generally, all Corps lands are open to the public for hunting except developed recreational areas and lands around the dam and other structures. Additional information and copies of regulations governing use of Kaw Lake as outlined in Title 36 Code

The following areas

are open for hunting of all species which may legally be taken during legal open season by archery only. 1) A 400-acre unit in the Washunga Bay Area. 2) A 600-acre unit in the McFadden Cove Area and below the dam embankment access road. 3) A 236-acre unit in the Osage Cove Area is open from 1 December through 31 December. 4) A 60-acre unit south of Kaw City and west of Pioneer Park. All Kaw Lake Public Hunting Areas are restricted to deer and waterfowl hunting only during deer gun season. The Eagle View Hiking Trail is closed during the deer primitive arms and rifle season. Try hunting during the week to avoid weekend crowds. And keep a close eye on the weather. When Old Man Winter decides to pay a rude visit to Kansas and points farther north in the Central Flyway, load up the decoys, kennel the retriever, and grab your gun and shells!

TRAIL RIDING

RIDE THE FIVE FINGERS TRAIL AT KAW LAKE

Trail Riding at Kaw Lake

P

rairie skies to lake views… you’ll find it all on the Five Fingers Trail at Kaw Lake. Known primarily at the Five Fingers Equestrian Trail, it’s also great for hikers and mountain bikers “If you like trees, you got it, if you like open country you got it,” said Rick Boyd, Kaw Lake Association board member. “We got a little bit of everything out here.” And Rick should know. He and his wife Lori Young live at the south end of the trail at Burbank Landing. Originally created by Grant Hodges when the lake was opened in the late ‘70s, the trails later became overgrown when Hodges quit working them. Floods and other weather conditions took their toll, until Rick and Lori moved to the area.

Now after years of weekend trail blazing by them, members of the Oklahoma Equestrian Trailriders (OETRA) and other volunteers, the trails are better than ever. What began as a 12-mile long trail from Sarge Creek to Burbank Landing, has now been expanded with many loops off the main trail with up to 40 miles of trails. Horseback riders interested in camping and riding the trails are STRONGLY URGED TO MAKE RESERVATIONS for the special equestrian campsites. These sites have corrals for horses. These are in the Sarge Creek campground, Loop A, sites 1-8. Whether calling the toll free Corps reservation service or going on-line to www.recreation. gov, be sure to request one

16 | 2014 KAW LAKE: NATURE’S PLAYGROUND | www.kawlake.com

of these sites. And the earlier the better, especially if you are looking for a weekend. These sites are $18 a night and there is no additional charge for use of the corrals. The Five Fingers Trail is open for riding year ‘round, but closed during deer rifle and primitive firearms seasons in the fall. Campsites can be reserved from April-September with camping on a first-come basis March, October and November. Campgrounds are closed December-February. In addition to riding with friends or family, you might enjoy a guided ride. The Kaw Lake Association sponsors two organized rides each year. The Eagle Watch by Horseback, the only one in Oklahoma, is held in

conjunction with the annual Ultimate Eagle Watch the third Saturday in January. This is a one-day ride although some choose to camp out and are allowed to do so this one winter weekend. The Cherokee Strip Trail Ride is a full weekend of activity including a cookout after the ride and optional second ride on Sunday. It will be held this October. For information on the Five Fingers Trail or the organized rides contact the Kaw Lake Association, 580-762-9494 or kawlake@cableone.net.

CAMPING

CAMPING, CANOEING & THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Camping at Kaw Lake

C

amping…it began as a bedroll under the stars. Then there were tents and camping became something for recreation, not just a way of living. Then came campers on the back of a pickup. Today we have homes on wheels, recreational vehicles with all the comforts of home including television, satellite dish, microwave, phones and refrigerators. Whether you want to “rough it” by tent camping in a more primitive campsite or want a site with water and electric hookups near a playground for the children, you’ll find it at Kaw Lake. The Corps of Engineers offers 292 campsites with various amenities. Reservations aren’t required, but recommended, especially for holiday weekends and weekends during the summer months. You can make a reservation at the Corps campgrounds for April through September by going on line to www.recreation. gov or calling the National Reservation Service at 1-877-444-6777.

Here’s some helpful frequently asked questions and answers: Q1: Which campground is the most kid friendly? A1: Sarge Creek and Osage Cove both have playgrounds. This is a good option with young children you may have trouble keeping entertained. McFadden Cove is closest to Sun ‘n Fun Waterpark, also great for young children. Q2: Where can I camp with horses? A2: Sarge Creek sites 1 to 8 are designated for camping with horses. This is also the start of the Five Fingers Equestrian Trail. Q3: Which campground is the quietest? A3: Bear Creek is the most remote and therefore often the quietest. Q4: Which sites are closest to water where I can pull up my boat?

A4: Check the maps of the various campgrounds found at www.kawlake.com. The C Loop (sites 36-57) at Sarge Creek is probably one of the best for this. However, some of the sites at Coon Creek are also conducive to beaching your boat or near boat ramps where you can easily get your boat in and out of the water and trailer close to your campsite. Q5: We just want to “rough it” and tent camp. Where should we go? A5: Any of the sites in any of the Corps of Engineers campgrounds can be used for tent camping. However, if you want to “rough it” and tent camp you can also save money by camping at the picnic area/campground at Coon Creek or choosing one of the smaller campgrounds McFadden Cove or Sandy Park. Q6: Where can I camp longer than 14 days?

consecutive days. If you’re looking for something longer, you might want to consider one of the locally owned campgrounds in the area. Look in the Services Directory of this magazine under Lodging for these campgrounds. Q7: What about cabins? A7: Camp McFadden has two types of cabins available to rent. The air-conditioned basic cabins sleep ten people and are bed only cabins. Also included in the rental is use of a community bath house. The two AMBUC cabins sleep six people each and have their own private bathrooms. Call 580-7629955 or go on line to www.campmcfadden.com to get information or make a reservation. There are a few other privately-owned cabins in the area. Call the Kaw Lake Association, 580-762-9494 for information.

A6: The Corps of Engineers camp sites are limited to 14

WHERE THE RUN BEGAN

Arkansas City was known by many names before claiming its present name. In 1893 men were lined up just south of this piece of land between the rivers, with hope in their hearts and dreams of owning land in their souls. It was September 16th of that year, when a gun was fired, signaling the start of the great land rush. Today this great piece of history is celebrated in the Cherokee Strip Land Rush Museum. The history of southern Kansas and northern Oklahoma are also found in the treasured museum. Interesting exhibits are included in the Museum, depicting life in the pioneer days, such as life on 101 Ranch of days gone by. Nature is also celebrated in Ark City. Along the sandy beaches of the Arkansas River, Chaplin Nature Center combines 230 acres of magnificent woodlands, prairies, and streams. The facilities include five miles of walking trails, a visitor’s center which is ideal for meetings, a nature library, a bookstore and gift shop, and a multi-purpose room. courses for their employees. Ark City is home to historical buildings which have been lovingly maintained since their creation, such as Ireland Hall, which was built as the first high school in town. The building is now used by Cowley College. Cowley College offers a progressive education to its international and local students. The Brown Centre at the college has been home to such productions as “Cats” and interesting musical groups such as the Temporal Mechanics Union.

Art around town is publicly displayed in the form of metal art, stainless steel pieces sculpted by local artist Gary Kahle, and many murals proudly displayed on downtown buildings, such as the Stone Bridge created by Gary Gackstatter. Many town celebrations take place throughout the year, celebrating art, nature, history, and culture, from a Model Train Show in April, the Renaissance Festival in August, to The Last Run Car Show and Arkalalah in the fall and a miniature Christmas Village for all to enjoy in December. There are many reasons to visit Ark City The shopping opportunities abound in the downtown and uptown areas. Many unique shops have taken up residence in town such as Bee’tween Friends and Willow Fashion, joining other staples such as Accents Too,

K&D Pharmacy, and Graves Drug, which also features an ol’ time soda fountain. Whether attending a sporting event, playing in the park or shopping for antiques, the guests of Ark City will discover the reasons our town is a “Treasure Between Rivers among Friends”.

ON THE OSAGE RESERVATION

Fairfax, on State Highway 18 south of Highway 60, was founded in 1903 in the southwestern section of the Osage Indian Reservation now known as Osage County. It began when the Santa Fe Railway came through this section and a group of traders saw the advantage of having their town near a railroad. Fairfax offers small-town living, but both Ponca City and Pawhuska are within easy reach. Take a step back in time when you view the famous Spur Collection at the First State Bank, open weekdays from 9 am - 3 pm. With many ties to the Osage Nation in Fairfax, the statue of Osage Principal Chief Ne-KahWah-She-Tun-Kah (1839-1923) stands in the Fairfax Cemetery. THE HEART OF KAW LAKE

“The Heart of Kaw Lake” is used to describe Kaw City. On a peninsula jutting into the middle of Kaw Lake, Kaw City is the only town located directly on the lake. This cozy community provides numerous amenities and services needed for campers, hunters, ATV and water enthusiasts alike. Founded in 1902 prior to statehood, the ‘old town’ went underwater in 1976. That was when the gates of the Kaw Dam closed and turned that particular area of the Arkansas River basin into the lake that we know today. Kaw City was relocated up the hill to its current location and continues to thrive today. The Santa Fe Railroad Depot was also moved and today houses the Kaw City Museum. This cherished building houses many artifacts from the area and also

documents the hard times and resilience of the residents of Kaw City. From the equipment of a circa 1930 beauty parlor to a homemade bed frame, history is preserved at the Kaw City Museum. A second museum, the Kanza Museum, is another gem in Kaw City’s crown. The Kanza Museum showcases the heritage and history of the Kaw Nation. Displays in the Kanza Museum include bronzes of tribal members and photos that document the history and activities of the Kaw Indian people. The museum is owned and operated by the Kaw Nation. Adjacent to the Kaw Nation headquarters is the non-smoking Kaw SouthWind Casino. Kaw City maintains the only free boat access on Kaw Lake at Pioneeer Cove,

NORTHERN GATEWAY TO KAW LAKE

Newkirk, Oklahoma, the northern gateway to beautiful Kaw Lake, is a small, rural community whose Main Street is historic Highway 77 built at the same time as Route 66. The entire downtown is on the National Register with the largest collection of limestone buildings in the state of Oklahoma. This picturesque community is the county seat of Kay County with one of the most beautiful courthouses inside and out. Newkirk is the home of Good Luck Liniment patented in the late 1890’s by Charlie Adams, an early day pharmacist. The liniment, designed to treat livestock for cuts and saddle sores, is still made and sold in Newkirk today. In honor of Newkirk’s heritage, Charlie and Good Luck, the second Saturday

of September, the community hosts Charlie Adams Day. The event takes place on the courthouse lawn and features world-class barbecue, Dutch oven cooking, storytelling, great entertainment, and activities for the children. Everything but the food is free! Newkirk is also home to one of the oldest golf courses in the state, and one of the very few with sand greens. The swimming pool is a WPA project. The downtown boasts several lovely outdoor sculptures and a couple of museums. Now, if games of chance are more to your liking – Newkirk has three of those nearby: South Wind, Native Lights and First Council Casinos. Hunting, fishing, and water sports are also near as well as picnicking and hiking.

INTERESTING FACTS: The infamous Dalton Gang’s grandmother lived in Perry. Perry is the smallest town in Oklahoma with a daily newspaper.

THE PLACE TO BE

Established by the Cherokee Strip run of 1893, Perry is east of I-35 and at the south end of the Kaw Lake area in northern Oklahoma. Perry was named for J.A. Perry, one of the township location commissioners. It is the county seat of Noble County. At one point Perry contained 110 saloons and gambling houses and was home to the notorious Doolin Gang. Today this friendly, historic town is proud of its agricultural history, progressive businesses and home-town values. You can learn about the history of the area at the Cherokee Strip Museum, at exit 186 off I-35. This five-acre complex traces the history of the Cherokee Outlet. In addition to the museum, the grounds include outdoor exhibits, an implement building and shaded picnic areas. Also on the grounds is the Rose Hill School, a one-room schoolhouse, where many Oklahoma fourth graders experience a living history program each year. Visit the original machine shop which later became Charles Machine Works, manufacturer of the Ditch Witch trencher. Now known as the Ditch Witch Heritage Center and Museum, the restored brick building houses a theater, conference room and museum tracing the company’s history. On the square you’ll find everything your heart desires from antiques to the unique. Many events take place on the square including the Spring Festival Car and Motorcycle Show and the annual Cherokee Strip Celebration. Many groups schedule reunions and other activities in Perry at the Holiday Inn Express, Comfort Inn or Tetik’s Country Barn, a great bed and breakfast for a special weekend. Pioneer Woman Museum Marland Mansion & Grand Home The Conoco Museum Poncan Theatre Standing Bear Museum

WHERE YOU FIND THE “MOST UNEXPECTED”

Whether you are visiting or already call Ponca City your home, you will find Ponca City a very memorable experience. Immerse in our history! Strategically located within 90 minutes of three major metropolitan communities, Ponca City has the amenities normally found only in larger communities. Ponca City got its name from the Ponca Native American people after the Cherokee Outlet Land Run in 1893. And now, over 100 years later, the Native American people are still a vital part of Ponca City. Standing Bear Park in Ponca City is the gateway to Native American culture in the area. Standing Bear Museum and Education Center is a uniquely designed building that creatively defines a space set aside to honor the six area tribes – the Kaw, Osage, Otoe-Missouria, Pawnee, Ponca and Tonkawa. This park is home to Oklahoma’s tallest statue, a 22-foot bronze of Ponca Chief Standing Bear. There is also a permanent Pow Wow arbor and arena, which hosts the annual Standing Bear Pow Wow each September. Across from the Phillips 66 Refinery is the Conoco Museum. This Smithsonian-quality museum offers a glimpse into the history of the wildcat days of the Cherokee Outlet and the birth of this premier oil and gas empire which was founded in 1875. The museum consists of 19 flat screen TV’s, interactive games and kiosks and a 40-seat theatre. This museum showcases the accomplishments, innovations and determination that expanded Marland Oil and Continental Oil Company to the diversified global energy company, Conoco. Continue on to the Marland Mansion, a 55-room Italian Renaissance villa built in 1928 by E.W. Marland, the founder of Marland Oil. This wealthy oil baron, also Oklahoma’s tenth governor, lived a life of elegance and wealth, and his former home is a testament to this. Visitors can see intricately carved wood, sculptured stone, wrought-iron arched doorways, and Waterford crystal chandeliers. This famed “Palace on the Prairie” also features hidden tunnels, angels, gargoyles, imported marble, a hidden poker room, a leather-lined elevator, twelve

bathrooms, three kitchens, an elegant ballroom with 24-karat gold leaf-covered ceiling worth over $1.4 million, and seven fireplaces. The Mansion is a National Historic Landmark. Marland’s Grand Home, which was Marland’s first home in Ponca City, is a 22-room house built in 1916. It is listed on the Oklahoma Landmarks publication as one of Oklahoma’s outstanding architectural accomplishments. Inside the home and museum are more than 4,000 priceless exhibits, including relics, artifacts, paintings, and other memorabilia dating back to the early 1700’s. The Grand Home houses the D.A.R. Museum, the 101 Ranch Museum and the Louise Fluke Flag Plaza. The historic Poncan Theatre offers a number of surprising performances as well as a one of a kind Lobby Art exhibit of hand-painted 1930’s movie posters that are a must see. The Poncan plays hosts to world-renowned musical groups, dancers and performers. If you are an art enthusiast, you will enjoy the Ponca City Art Center, home to different exhibits each month, festivals, and an annual outdoor art show that brings artists from surrounding states. While traveling through Ponca City, one cannot help but notice the Pioneer Woman Statue, located at 14th and Lake Road. Executed in 1929 by English-born sculptor Bryant Baker (1881-1970), the Pioneer Woman Statue is located at 14th and Highland, adjacent to the recently remodeled Pioneer Woman Museum. According to its dedicatory plaque, the Pioneer Woman was created “in appreciation of the heroic character of the women who braved the dangers and endured the hardships incident to the daily life of the pioneer and homesteader in this country.” The twelve-thousand-pound, seventeen-foot-tall, cast-bronze statue stands atop a pyramidal, silverdale-stone base. The entire presentation rises to forty feet. Depicted is a woman, Bible under her arm, leading her young son bravely, confidently into the future. The Pioneer Woman Museum showcases the dedication of the pioneer women who crossed this area and refused to be limited by boundaries. Dedicated in 1958, the newly expanded museum features stories of

OIL AND COWBOY COUNTRY

East of Kaw Lake in the rolling hills of Osage County is the oil-boom town of Shidler, at the intersections of Highways 11 and 18. Known today for large cattle ranches, Shidler hit its heyday in the 1920’s with one of the largest oil finds in the country at the time. Today you will see a blend of oil-field workers and working cowboys around town. You don’t have to look very hard to see cowboys complete with chaps, spurs and hats eating lunch in a local restaurant or workers fresh in from the oil fields that are seeing a resurgence in activity. The Prairie Rattler Winery is on Hwy. 11 on the west side of town. Stop by and sip the wines in the sipping room from 2-8 pm Wednesday through Saturday or by appointment. LITTLE TOWN WITH A BIG HEART -– by Marjilea Smithheisler

A unique past, an intriguing present and an exciting future – that’s Tonkawa! Native Americans, hardy pioneers, visionary educators, legendary oilmen, German prisoners of war and creative citizens have all left their marks on this city on the Salt Fork River just east of I-35. Guided into town by the 45 foot lighted wheatheart on top of the Farmers Coop, you’ll enter the historic downtown district. The picturesque Heart in the Park Labyrinth with its timeline of Tonkawa history and the Grand Heart Walk of art panels surrounded by personalized pavers are the latest additions to Centennial Park at Sixth Street and Grand Avenue, downtown Tonkawa. A number of historical monuments and three museums – the McCarter Museum of Tonkawa History, the Tonkawa Tribal Museum and the A.D. Buck History and Welcome Center– give glimpses of the history of the town and surrounding areas. Tonkawa (the word translates as “They all stay together”) takes its name from the Tonkawa Tribe, which was removed in 1885 to the area then known as Oakland Reserve and home of Nez Perce Chief Joseph and his band from 1879-1885. The town itself was settled by pioneers making the Cherokee Outlet Land Run of 1893 and was incorporated in 1894. Because of abundant wheat production in the area, Tonkawa styles itself “Wheatheart of Oklahoma.”

The town entered the “Roaring Twenties” with the discovery of oil in the Tonkawa (Three Sands) Field in 1921. Briefly known as “The Billion Dollar Spot,” Tonkawa’s population swelled to 10,000 and several beautiful homes and churches built during this time still stand in the city. German prisoners of war were housed in a POW camp during World War II, and the site, now occupied by an industrial park, is identified by a stone marker engraved with a map of the original compound. Northern Oklahoma College, established in 1901 as University Preparatory School, is the home of the Eleanor Hays Art Gallery, which hosts outstanding exhibits by Oklahoma artists throughout the academic year, and of the A.D. Buck History and Welcome Center. Its landscaped grounds, affiliated with the state botanical garden system, delight the eye with individual memorial gardens and sculptures. Numerous cultural events are open to the public. The Mid-America Arts Alliance awarded a mural project to one Oklahoma town in 2010. Tonkawa was selected for this public art project. Employing an intensive communitybased process, local volunteers teamed up with the visiting artists to research, design and help paint this sprawling visual poem honoring Tonkawa’s cultural history and dreams of things to come, The resulting
