COMMUNITY INVESTMENT PARTNERSHIP
HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE:
Edmonton Community Foundation is pleased to once again provide a guide to Community Investment Partnership (CIP) projects. ECF often learns of innovative and timely projects through stakeholders and contacts in the charitable sector.
On the next page are some questions and answers that may help you as you look through this booklet. Once you have reviewed the projects we encourage you to contact our office for more information on the projects and how you can participate.
Last year was the first for the CIP program and we were delighted that donors demonstrated a keen interest. More than $36,000 in donor funding was committed to several of the projects listed in our Fall 2010 CIP guide. These commitments – and a review of the grant proposals by our advisory committees – allowed the ECF Board to fully fund all of the CIP projects. The CIP augments ECF support to organizations by providing donors the opportunity to invest with us in community projects. This guide contains a number of project proposals ranging in scope and focus, each designed to meet a current community need. If you are interested in any of these projects you can participate by allocating a portion of the income from your donor advised fund to that project.
For more information on the CIP program or any of these projects please contact Craig Stumpf-Allen at (780) 426-0015 ext 111 or email craig@ecfoundation.org.
Deadline to support projects: June 1st, 2011.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What if I want more information about a project?
My fund is small. Can I still participate?
This guide contains only brief summaries of proposed projects. Further information can be provided upon request.
No matter how much your fund has available to grant, you can participate in the Community Investment Partnership. By combining your fund’s granting power with others at ECF, we can enhance the impact of your granting decisions.
What happens if other donors choose the same project, or if the project I choose does not receive other funding?
If you wish, you can also provide an immediate gift in support of one the projects.
Projects will be funded on a first-come, first-served basis. If a project receives more support than needed, we will contact you to discuss alternatives.
Do I have to contribute to the programs you identify?
Grant requests will also be considered by our advisory committees (volunteers with expertise in their respective sectors) who will provide recommendations to the ECF Board of Directors. If a project is not approved by the ECF Board, we will contact you to discuss why and to explore other options.
No. You can decide whether you want to contribute to the programs identified here. You may choose to wait for another idea or may identify a grant recipient on your own. You can also ask for information on other organizations which are addressing community issues which are of particular concern to you.

Project:
CFRN TOTEM POLE CONSERVATION Project Need: $23,060 Project Description:
Organization:
For about 30 years, the Sunwapta totem pole graced the grounds at CFRN Television on Stony Plain Road. After being rescued from a dumpster and decorating a campground, the pole, carved by renowned artist and activist Mathias Joe Capilano, was acquired by the Royal Alberta Museum in 2010. The artefact requires extensive conservation work to return it to an exhibitable state. This treatment would take place in a public area of the museum so that visitors can see the progress and learn about heritage preservation.
The Friends of Royal Alberta Museum Society promotes programs, raises funds, and assists with the collection, preservation and interpretation of Alberta’s heritage.
Project:
“IGNITE CHANGE NOW!” YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING Project Need: $10,800 Project Description:
Organization:
Youth see the issues facing our society but don’t always know how they can make a difference. Saskatchewan Riverkeeper provides youth leadership training in conjunction with the Global Youth Assembly being held in Edmonton this summer. Through training, youth will connect human rights and environmental issues, learn about active citizenship, and develop action plans to reach even more youth. Funding is sought to subsidize the participation of Edmonton youth.
Saskatchewan Riverkeeper is a local water preservation group that works to restore, preserve and protect water quality and biodiversity of the watershed.

WINSPEAR EMERGENCY GRANTS Project Need: $12,000 Project Description: When someone who is already struggling to get by gets hit with an illness, job loss, or bedbugs, where can they go for help? Winspear Emergency Grants provide one-time assistance for the most vulnerable when no other help is available. Grants average under $500 and are paid to a third party such as a landlord – never to the individual. Each year, a portion of the income from the Winspear Fund supports the Winspear Emergency Grants; however, the amount available from this source does not meet the ever increasing need in our community.
Organization: The Winspear Emergency Grants are reviewed and administered by a community volunteer with expertise in social services, and disbursed through Catholic Social Services, a multi-function social service agency that serves people of all faiths and cultures.
Project:
FORESTAGE RECONSTRUCTION Project Need: $16,000 Project Description: To immerse audiences in their productions, the Free Will Players have built a stage in front of the stage, which brings the action right to the kneecaps of the front row. Response from actors, designers and audiences has been effusive; however, the current wooden stage’s time has come. To reduce storage costs, labour costs, and waste from scrapped wood, the Players hope to replace the stage with an aluminum thrust that would last longer and be easier to assemble, dismantle and store.
Organization: The Freewill Shakespeare Festival brings the Bard to the Heritage Amphitheatre in Hawrelak Park every summer.

The projects shared one thing in common: they were all initiated and organized by youth. The program was so successful at supporting youth engagement that ECF is seeking to continue this granting program. Grants averaged $2,000 each.
Organization: Youth Empowerment grants are distributed to a number of non-profit organizations. The program is administered by Edmonton Community Foundation.
