UWC and your eligibility
UWC Red Cross Nordic has had the aim of bringing together those with disabilities and those without since its opening in 1995. From 2011 this has also included the provision of scholarships for victims of war. The college is part of the UWC network, which includes 14 international colleges. UWC has a history of seeking peaceful responses to conflict through intercultural understanding; the first UWC College opened in 1962 as a response to the Cold War with the aim of uniting and educating children from conflicting nations. Most UWC students are selected through our unique national committee system. Our volunteer-led national committees are present in more than 145 countries, and run selections based on the local educational and cultural context. Our national committees support the students and their families throughout the application process. For contact details for your own national committee visit uwc.org/education
These scholarships are reserved for young people of pre-university age (16-19) who have received debilitating injuries as a result of conflict, and who would therefore most benefit from access to our excellent rehabilitation facilities and educational programme. As all classes are conducted in English, the successful candidates will also need to have a reasonable degree of proficiency in this language. There are two scholarship places available for the academic year commencing August 2014 and 2015. Some applicants, such as those with a lesser understanding of English, may benefit from one preparation year and as such early nominations are encouraged.
process
Any person or organization can nominate a candidate. The purpose of the nomination is to identify eligible candidates who will most benefit from the program. UWC Red Cross Nordic will then contact the nominating people or organization, the nominee and the National Committee in the home country of the nominee to discuss the continued selection process.
